Abstract

Polaritonic crystals (PoCs) have experienced significant advancements through involving hyperbolic polaritons in anisotropic materials such as $\alpha$-MoO$_{\rm 3}$, offering a promising approach for nanoscale light control and improved light-matter interactions. Notably, twisted bilayer $\alpha$-MoO$_{\rm 3}$ enables tunable iso-frequency contours (IFCs), especially generating flat IFCs at certain twist angles, which could enhance mode selectivity in their PoCs through the highly collimated and canalized polaritons. This study unveils the selective excitation of Bloch modes in PoCs with square-lattice structures on twisted bilayer $\alpha$-MoO$_{\rm 3}$ with canalized phonon polaritons. Through the optimization of the square lattice design, there is an effective redistribution of canalized polaritons into the reciprocal lattices of PoCs. Fine-tuning the periodicity and orientation of the hole lattice enables momentum matching between flat IFCs and co-linear reciprocal points, allowing precise and directional control over desired Bragg resonances and Bloch modes. Abstract

Fe-N-C materials have been regarded as one of the potential candidates to replace traditional noble-metal-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). It is believed that the structure of carbon support in Fe-N-C materials plays an essential role in highly efficient ORR. However, precisely designing the morphology and surface chemical structure of carbon support remains a challenge. Herein, we present a novel synthetic strategy for the preparation of porous carbon spheres (PCSs) with high specific surface area, well-defined pore structure, tunable morphology and controllable heteroatom doping. The synthesis involves Schiff-based polymerization utilizing octaaminophenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS-NH2) and heteroatom-containing aldehydes, followed by pyrolysis and HF etching. The well-defined pore structure of PCS can provide the confinement field for ferroin and transform into Fe-N-C sites after carbonization. The tunable morphology of PCS can be easily achieved by changing the solvents. The surface chemical structure of PCS can be tailored by utilizing different heteroatom-containing aldehydes. After optimizing the structure of PCS, Fe-N-C loading on N,S-codoped porous carbon sphere (NSPCS-Fe) displays outstanding ORR activity in alkaline solution. This work paves a new path for fabrication of Fe-N-C materials with the desired morphology and well-designed surface chemical structure, demonstrating significant potential for energy-related applications. 50. Selenium-Functionalized Corn Starch as a Biodegradable GPx Mimic with High Catalytic Performance

Abstract

Selenium-functionalized starch (Se-starch80) is one of the main functional foods used for selenium supplementation. In traditional agriculture, Se-starch has some deficiencies such as long growth cycle and unstable selenium content that prevent its antioxidant performance. In this study, Se-starch was prepared by the nucleophilic addition between NaSeH and carbon-carbon double bond of octenyl succinic anhydride waxy corn starch ester (OSA starch). Some techniques such as 1HNMR, XPS, SEM-EDS, XRD and FT-IR were used to characterize the relevant samples and the results showed that the modification did not destroy the starch framework significantly and the catalytic center (negative divalent selenium) was anchored on the starch framework. The intensive distribution of catalytic center on the starch surface and the hydrophobic microenvironments derived from the OSA chains furnished the Se-starch80 with a high GPx-like catalytic activity (initial reaction rate = 3.64 μM/min). This value was about 1.5 × 105 times higher than that of a typical small-molecule GPx mimic (PhSeSePh). In addition, the Se-starch80, without any cytotoxicity, showed a saturated kinetic catalytic behavior that is similar to a typical enzyme. This work exemplifies a biodegradable selenium-functionalized polymer platform for the high-performing GPx mimic.
