Semiconductor-based superconducting qubits offer a versatile platform for studying hybrid quantum devices in circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) architecture. Most of these cQED experiments utilize coplanar waveguides, where the incorporation of DC gate lines is straightforward. Here, we present a technique for probing gate-tunable hybrid devices using a three-dimensional (3D) microwave cavity. A recess is machined inside the cavity wall for the placement of devices and gate lines. We validate this design using a hybrid device based on an InAs-Al nanowire Josephson junction. The coupling between the device and the cavity is facilitated by a long superconducting strip, the antenna. The Josephson junction and the antenna together form a gatemon qubit. We further demonstrate the gate-tunable cavity shift and two-tone qubit spectroscopy. This technique could be used to probe various quantum devices and materials in a 3D cQED architecture that requires DC gate voltages.

We study a gate-tunable superconducting qubit (gatemon) based on a thin InAs-Al hybrid nanowire. Using a gate voltage to control its Josephson energy, the gatemon can reach the strong coupling regime to a microwave cavity. In the dispersive regime, we extract the energy relaxation time $T_1\sim$0.56 $\mu$s and the dephasing time $T_2^* \sim$0.38 $\mu$s. Since thin InAs-Al nanowires can have fewer or single sub-band occupation and recent transport experiment shows the existence of nearly quantized zero-bias conductance peaks, our result holds relevancy for detecting Majorana zero modes in thin InAs-Al nanowires using circuit quantum electrodynamics., Comment: Raw data and processing codes within this paper are available at: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7620737

Hybrid semiconductor-superconductor InAs-Al nanowires with uniform and defect-free crystal interfaces are one of the most promising candidates used in the quest for Majorana zero modes (MZMs). However, InAs nanowires often exhibit a high density of randomly distributed twin defects and stacking faults, which result in an uncontrolled and non-uniform InAs-Al interface. Furthermore, this type of disorder can create potential inhomogeneity in the wire, destroy the topological gap, and form trivial sub-gap states mimicking MZM in transport experiments. Further study shows that reducing the InAs nanowire diameter from growth can significantly suppress the formation of these defects and stacking faults. Here, we demonstrate the in situ growth of ultra-thin InAs nanowires with epitaxial Al film by molecular-beam epitaxy. Our InAs diameter (~ 30 nm) is only one-third of the diameters (~ 100 nm) commonly used in literatures. The ultra-thin InAs nanowires are pure phase crystals for various different growth directions, suggesting a low level of disorder. Transmission electron microscopy confirms an atomically sharp and uniform interface between the Al shell and the InAs wire. Quantum transport study on these devices resolves a hard induced superconducting gap and $2e^-$ periodic Coulomb blockade at zero magnetic field, a necessary step for future MZM experiments. Twisting two layers into a magic angle (MA) of ~1.1{\deg} is found essential to create low energy flat bands and the resulting correlated insulating, superconducting, and magnetic phases in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). While most of previous works focus on revealing these emergent states in MA-TBG, a study of the twist angle dependence, which helps to map an evolution of these phases, is yet less explored. Here, we report a magneto-transport study on one non-magic angle TBG device, whose twist angle {\theta} changes from 1.25{\deg} at one end to 1.43{\deg} at the other. For {\theta}=1.25{\deg}, we observe an emergence of topological insulating states at hole side with a sequence of Chern number |C|=4-|v|, where v is the number of electrons (holes) in moir\'e unite cell. When {\theta}>1.25{\deg}, the Chern insulator from flat band disappears and evolves into fractal Hofstadter butterfly quantum Hall insulator where magnetic flux in one moir\'e unite cell matters. Many proposals in exploring topological quantum computation are based on superconducting quantum devices constructed on materials with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). For these devices, a full control on both the magnitude and the spatial distribution of the supercurrent would be highly demanded, but has been elusive up to now. We constructed proximity-type Josephson junction on nanoplates of Bi2O2Se, a new emerging semiconductor with strong SOC. Through electrical gating, we show that the supercurrent can be fully turned ON and OFF, and its real-space pathways can be configured either through the bulk or along the edges. Our work demonstrates Bi2O2Se as a promising platform for constructing multifunctional hybrid superconducting devices as well as for searching for topological superconductivity.

We report on the successful synthesis and low-temperature electron transport investigations of a new form of material - Bi2O2Se semiconducting nanowires. Gate-tunable 0- and $\pi$-h/e (h is the Planck constant and e the elementary charge) periodic resistance oscillations in longitudinal magnetic field were observed unexpectedly, demonstrating novel quasi-ballistic, phase-coherent surface states in Bi2O2Se nanowires. By reaching a very good agreement between the calculated density of states and the experimental data, we clarified the mechanism to be the one dimensional subbands formed along the circumference of the nanowire rather than the usually considered Aharonov-Bohm interference. A qualitative physical picture based on downward band bending associated with the complex band structure is proposed to describe the formation of the surface states., Comment: Corrected errors in calculations. In search of fault-tolerant topological quantum computation (TQC), zero-bias conductance peak as a necessary signature of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) has been observed in a number of solid-state systems. Here, we present the signature of MZMs from a phase-sensitive experiment on Josephson trijunctions constructed on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators. We observed that the minigap at the center of the trijunction is protected to close over extended regions in phase space, supporting in principle the Majorana phase diagram proposed by Fu and Kane in 2008. Topological semimetal is a topic of general interest in material science. Recently, a new kind of topological semimetal called type-II Dirac semimetal with tilted Dirac cones is discovered in PtSe2 family. However, the further investigation is hindered due to the huge energy difference from Dirac points to Fermi level and the irrelevant conducting pockets at Fermi surface. Here we characterize the optimized type-II Dirac dispersions in a metastable 1T phase of IrTe2. Our strategy of Pt doping protects the metastable 1T phase in low temperature and tunes the Fermi level to the Dirac point. As demonstrated by angle-resolved photoemission spectra and first principle calculations, the Fermi surface of Ir1-xPtxTe2 is formed by only a single band with type-II Dirac cone which is tilted strongly along kz momentum direction. Interesting superconductivity is observed in samples for Dirac point close to Fermi level and even survives when Fermi level aligns with the Dirac point as finite density of states created by the tilted cone dispersion. This advantage offers opportunities for possible topological superconductivity and versatile Majorana devices in type-II Dirac semimetals.
