Abstract Background S100β is a biomarker of astroglial damage, the level of which is significantly increased following brain injury. However, the characteristics of S100β and its association with prognosis in patients with acute ischemic stroke following intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) remain unclear. Methods Patients in this multicenter prospective cohort study were prospectively and consecutively recruited from 16 centers. Serum S100β levels were measured 24 h after IVT. National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and hemorrhagic transformation (HT) were measured simultaneously. NIHSS at 7 days after stroke, final infarct volume, and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores at 90 days were also collected. An mRS score ≥ 2 at 90 days was defined as an unfavorable outcome. Results A total of 1072 patients were included in the analysis. The highest S100β levels (> 0.20 ng/mL) correlated independently with HT and higher NIHSS at 24 h, higher NIHSS at 7 days, larger final infarct volume, and unfavorable outcome at 3 months. The patients were divided into two groups based on dominant and non-dominant stroke hemispheres. PLATZ is a novel zinc finger DNA-binding protein that plays an important role in regulating plant growth and development and resisting abiotic stress. However, there has been very little research on the function of this family gene in tomatoes, which limits its application in germplasm resource improvement. Therefore, the PLATZ gene family was identified and analyzed in tomato, and its roles were predicted and verified to provide a basis for in-depth research on SlPLATZ gene function. In this study, the PLATZ family members of tomato were identified in the whole genome, and 19 SlPLATZ genes were obtained. Functional prediction was conducted based on gene and promoter structure analysis and RNA-seq-based expression pattern analysis. SlPLATZ genes that responded significantly under different abiotic stresses or were significantly differentially expressed among multiple tissues were screened as functional gene resources. SlPLATZ17 was selected for functional verification by experiment-based analysis. The results showed that the downregulation of SlPLATZ17 gene expression reduced the drought and salt tolerance of tomato plants. Tomato plants overexpressing SlPLATZ17 had larger flower sizes and long, thin petals, adjacent petals were not connected at the base, and the stamen circumference was smaller. This study contributes to understanding the functions of the SlPLATZ family in tomato and provides a reference for functional gene screening.

The brain-computer interface (BCI)-mediated rehabilitation is emerging as a solution to restore motor skills in paretic patients after stroke. In the human brain, cortical motor neurons not only fire when actions are carried out but are also activated in a wired manner through many cognitive processes related to movement such as imagining, perceiving, and observing the actions. Moreover, the recruitment of motor cortexes can usually be regulated by environmental conditions, forming a closed-loop through neurofeedback. However, this cognitive-motor control loop is often interrupted by the impairment of stroke. The requirement to bridge the stroke-induced gap in the motor control loop is promoting the evolution of the BCI-based motor rehabilitation system and, notably posing many challenges regarding the disease-specific process of post stroke motor function recovery. This review aimed to map the current literature surrounding the new progress in BCI-mediated post stroke motor function recovery involved with cognitive aspect, particularly in how it refired and rewired the neural circuit of motor control through motor learning along with the BCI-centric closed-loop.

Excessively using fertilizers poses serious problems such as environmental pollution, soil degeneration, and quality and yield reduction of vegetables. This study aimed to illustrate the effect of different organic manure and inorganic fertilizers on the characteristics of soil, and the growth, yield, and quality of non-heading Chinese cabbage. There were 28 treatments in the first experiment: no fertilization (CK), conventional fertilization (100% nitrogen T1), 20% reduction of total nitrogen (T2), 30% reduction of total nitrogen (T3), and 20% or 30% reduction of total nitrogen with four kinds of fertilizers and three kinds of dosages (24 treatments). Six treatments, being selected from the first experiment based on growth of plants, were further applied to the second experiment. The results of the second experiment showed that the pH, nitrate nitrogen, and organic matter content of soil treated by N2 (20% reduction of total nitrogen with 1500 kg·ha−1 No.1: Bacillus-enriched bio-organic fertilizer) were significantly enhanced compared with T1 (100% nitrogen). The N2-treated plants showed an 11.66% increase in root activity, 9.24% enhancement in yield, 5.79% increase in vitamin C (VC), and 47.87% decrease in nitrate content compared with T1. Nitrogen reduction with bio-organic fertilizer significantly increased the dominant phyla of Gemmatimonadetes and Chytridiomycota and significantly decreased Ascomycota, and increased the dominant genera of Gemmatimonas and Bacillus and decreased Fusarium, indicating that this treatment altered the microbial community composition of soil. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that AP (available phosphorus), OM (organic matter), and UREA (urease activity) of the soil were significantly correlated with microbial community structure. Yield was significantly, positively correlated with Rhodanobacter and Olpidium. In conclusion, nitrogen reduction with bio-organic fertilizer benefited growth, yield, and quality of non-heading Chinese cabbage by improving the soil quality.

Continuous cropping has become a key factor limiting the sustainable development of greenhouse vegetables. It is a matter of great importance to maintain and improve the effective fertility of greenhouse soil. Catch crops planted as green manure is an effective method to improve soil quality. In order to determine the effects of catch crops on soil characteristics and the growth of afterculture vegetables, onion, corn, wheat, soybean and cabbage were planted as catch crops for two years during the summer fallow season, with no catch crop as CK. The results showed that the total porosity and organic matter content of the soil, with corn and wheat as catch crops, was significantly increased by 2.93%, 5.25% and 21.32%, 51.61%, respectively, while pH was decreased, compared with CK. The urease, sucrase, invertase, catalase and FDA enzyme activity of the soil with corn and wheat as catch crops was significantly increased by 30.14% and 30.21%, 14.81% and 25.31%, 15.43% and 15.21%, 29.37% and 28.69%, 46.32% and 44.23%. Meanwhile, the enzyme activity of the soil was increased with each catch crop planted. The amount of culturable bacteria and actinomycetes in the soil with corn and wheat as catch crops was increased by 33.42% and 38.12% at the period of 150dayII, while fungi was decreased by 59.95%. The yield of vegetables with corn and wheat as catch crops significantly increased by 5.59~13.33% and 4.35~11.18% compared with CK. Overall, catch crops could improve the soil quality as well as the growth of afterculture vegetables.

Fertilizer is extremely essential to increasing the yield of vegetables. However, excessively using fertilizers has had a negative impact on the yield and quality of vegetables as well as soil environment in recent years. Non-heading Chinese cabbage ‘yellow rose’ was applied to determine the influence of organic manure and inorganic fertilizer on the character of rhizosphere soil, the growth and quality of plants. There were five treatments: conventional fertilization (NF), a total nitrogen reduction of 20% (NF20), a total nitrogen reduction of 30% (NF30), a total nitrogen reduction of 20% with 100 kg·667 m−2 bio-organic fertilizer (BNF20) and a total nitrogen reduction of 30% with 200 kg·667 m−2 bio-organic fertilizer (BNF30). The results show that the content of nitrate nitrogen, organic matter in rhizosphere soil treated by BNF20 and BNF30, was significantly enhanced compared with NF. The yield, Vc and soluble protein of plants treated by BNF20 and BNF30 increased by 30.11%, 17.26%, 5.66% and 15.90%, 16.02%, 5.37%, respectively, compared with NF. On the contrary, the nitrate content significantly decreased in plants of BNF20 and BNF30 by 47.87% and 40.98% compared with NF. The significantly positive correlation was observed between nitrate nitrogen content in rhizosphere soil and the yield (p < 0.05). In conclusion, reduced nitrogen with bio-organic fertilizer can improve the yield and quality of ‘yellow rose’ cabbage by improving the quality of rhizosphere soil.
