Abstract In the era of smart agriculture, the precise labeling and recording of growth information in plants pose challenges for modern agricultural production. This study introduces strontium aluminate particles coated with H3PO4 as luminescent labels capable of spatial embedding within plants for information encoding and storage during growth. The encapsulation with H3PO4 imparts stability and enhanced luminescence to SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ (SAO). Using SAO@H3PO4 as a low-damage luminescent label, we implement its delivery into plants through microneedles (MNs) patches. The embedded SAO@H3PO4 within plants exhibits sustained and unaltered high signal-to-noise afterglow emission, with luminous intensity remaining at approximately 78% of the original for 27 days. To cater to diverse information recording needs, MNs of various geometric shapes are designed for loading SAO@H3PO4, and the luminescent signals in different shapes can be accurately identified through a designed program, the corresponding information can be conveniently viewed on a computer. Additionally, inspired by binary information concepts, MNs patches with specific arrangements of luminescent and non-luminescent points are created, resulting in varied luminescent MNs arrays on leaves. An advanced camera system with a tailored program accurately identifies and maps the labels to the corresponding recorded information. These findings showcase the potential of low-damage luminescent labels within plants, paving the way for convenient and widespread storage of plant growth information.

Carbon dots (CDs) with different structures were prepared by electrolysis (PE-CDs) and hydrothermal (PH-CDs) methods using proanthocyanidins as precursors. The smaller size and lower zeta potential enabled the PE-CDs treated rice seedlings to exhibit greater resistance to salt stress. The fresh weight of rice seedlings under salt stress was significantly increased by spraying CDs every other day for two weeks. PE-CDs treated group exhibited a faster electron transport rate, and the SOD activity and flavonoid content were 2.5-fold and 0.23-fold higher than those of the salt stress-treated group. Furthermore, the metabolomics and transcriptomics analysis revealed that the PsaC gene of photosystem I was significantly up-regulated under PE-CDs treatment, which accelerated electron transfer in photosystem I. The up-regulation of BX1 and IGL genes encoding indole synthesis allowed rice to enhance stress tolerance through tryptophan and benzoxazine biosynthesis pathways. These findings offer help in purposefully synthesizing CDs and boosting food production.

With the rapid development of the pipeline transportation and exploitation of mineral resources, there is an urgent requirement for high-performance polymer matrix composites with low friction and wear, especially under oxidative and prolonged working conditions. In this work, ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) matrix composites with the addition of carbon fibers (CFs), TiC, and MoS2 were prepared by the hot press sintering method. The influence of thermal oxygen aging time (90 °C, 0 h–64 h) on their mechanical and frictional performance was investigated. The results showed that TiC ceramic particles can increase wear resistance, especially by aging times up to 32 and 64 h. The wear mechanisms were analyzed based on the results of SEM images, EDS, and Raman spectra. The knowledge obtained herein will facilitate the design of long-service-life polymer matrix composites with promising low friction and wear performances.

Abstract Background Glioma exhibit heterogeneous susceptibility for targeted ferroptosis. How circRNAs alterations in glioma promote iron metabolism and ferroptosis defense remains unclarified. Methods The highly enriched circRNAs in glioblastoma (GBM) were obtained through analysis of sequencing datasets. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT–PCR) was used to determine the expression of circRNF10 in glioma and normal brain tissue. Both gain-of-function and loss-of-function studies were used to assess the effects of circRNF10 on ferroptosis using in vitro and in vivo assays. The hypothesis that ZBTB48 promotes ferroptosis defense was established using bioinformatics analysis and functional assays. RNA pull-down and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assays were performed to examine the interaction between circRNF10 and target proteins including ZBTB48, MKRN3 and IGF2BP3. The posttranslational modification mechanism of ZBTB48 was verified using coimmunoprecipitation (co-IP) and ubiquitination assays. The transcription activation of HSPB1 and IGF2BP3 by ZBTB48 was confirmed through luciferase reporter gene and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays. The stabilizing effect of IGF2BP3 on circRNF10 was explored by actinomycin D assay. Finally, a series of in vivo experiments were performed to explore the influences of circRNF10 on the glioma progression. Results A novel circular RNA, hsa_circ_0028912 (named circRNF10), which is significantly upregulated in glioblastoma tissues and correlated with patients’ poor prognosis. Through integrated analysis of the circRNA-proteins interaction datasets and sequencing results, we reveal ZBTB48 as a transcriptional factor binding with circRNF10, notably promoting upregulation of HSPB1 and IGF2BP3 expression to remodel iron metabolism and facilitates the launch of a circRNF10/ZBTB48/IGF2BP3 positive feedback loop in GSCs. Additionally, circRNF10 can competitively bind to MKRN3 and block E3 ubiquitin ligase activity to enhance ZBTB48 expression. Consequently, circRNF10-overexpressed glioma stem cells (GSCs) display lower Fe2+ accumulation, selectively priming tumors for ferroptosis evading. Conclusion Our research presents abnormal circRNAs expression causing a molecular and metabolic change of glioma, which we leverage to discover a therapeutically exploitable vulnerability to target ferroptosis.

Preparing submicron and nanoscale phosphors with good optical properties for practical applications is a challenging task for current inorganic long afterglow luminescent materials. This study utilized commercialized SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ phosphors (SAOED) as raw materials and employed solvents with lower polarity or non-polar solvents for dynamic solvothermal treatment. The commercialized phosphor’s overall average particle size was reduced from 42.3 μm to 23.6 μm while maintaining the fluorescence intensity at 91.39% of the original sample. Additionally, the study demonstrated the applicability of the dynamic solvothermal method to most other commercialized inorganic phosphors. The experiment produced a high-brightness nano-sized phosphor with a yield of 5.64%. The average diameter of the phosphor was 85 nm, with an average thickness of 16 nm. The quantum efficiency of the phosphor was 74.46% of the original sample. The fingerprint imaging results suggest that the nano-sized phosphors have potential for practical applications.

The unique properties of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are responsible for their diverse applications in photonic materials, medicine, analytics, and energy conversion. In this study, water-soluble rare-earth upconversion nanomaterials emitting green, yellow, and red light under 1550 nm excitation were synthesized. These nanomaterials were then integrated into water-soluble Kevlar nanofibers (KNFs) to fabricate ultra-thin composite films exhibiting favorable mechanical characteristics. The characterization of the products, along with their luminescent, mechanical, and temperature-sensing properties, was examined. The results indicate that the composite material exhibited varying colors based on the doped nanoparticles when subjected to 1550 nm excitation. The composite showed highly sensitive temperature-sensing properties, excellent luminescent characteristics, and superior mechanical strength. This study suggests that KNFs are effective carriers of UCNPs. This study offers a reference for the utilization of rare-earth upconversion in anti-counterfeiting displays, wearable health monitoring, and remote temperature sensing.

Abstract Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common primary malignant tumor in the brain, and its robust proliferation and invasion abilities reduce the survival time of patients. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play an essential role in various tumors, such as regulating tumor cell proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, metastasis, and other progressive phenotypes through different mechanisms. Finding novel circRNAs may significantly contribute to the prognosis of GBM and provide the basis for the targeted therapy of GBM. In this study, we found circPTPRF is a novel circRNA that has never been studied, which was highly expressed in GBM and is closely related to poor patient prognoses. After knockdown or overexpression in glioma cell lines (U87 and LN229) and glioma stem cells (GSCs), we identified that circPTPRF could promote proliferation, invasion, and neurospheres formation abilities of GBM via in vitro and in vivo experiments. Mechanisms, miR-1208 was confirmed as a target of circPTPRF, and miR-1208 can also target the 3’UTR of YY1, and they were proved by luciferase reporter, western blotting (WB), qPCR and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assays. The following rescue experiments demonstrated that circPTPRF was a miR-1208 sponge for upregulating YY1 expression to promote proliferation, invasion and neurosphere formation abilities of GBM in vitro. In conclusion, the circPTPRF/miR-1208/YY1 axis can regulate GBM progression. CircPTPRF may play an essential role in GBM diagnosis and prognostic prediction and be an important molecular target for GBM therapy.

Abstract Background Ferroptosis is a novel form of iron-dependent cell death and participates in the malignant progression of glioblastoma (GBM). Although circular RNAs (circRNAs) are found to play key roles in ferroptosis via several mechanisms, including regulating iron metabolism, glutathione metabolism, lipid peroxidation and mitochondrial-related proteins, there are many novel circRNAs regulating ferroptosis need to be found, and they may become a new molecular treatment target in GBM. Methods The expression levels of circLRFN5, PRRX2 and GCH1 were detected by qPCR, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry. Lentiviral-based infections were used to overexpress or knockdown these molecules in glioma stem cells (GSCs). The biological functions of these molecules on GSCs were detected by MTS (3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H tetrazolium), the 5-ethynyl-20-deoxyuridine (EdU) incorporation assay, transwell, neurosphere formation assays, Extreme Limiting Dilution Analysis (ELDA) and xenograft experiments. The content of ferroptosis levels in GSCs was detected by BODIPY 581/591 C11 assay, glutathione (GSH) assay and malondialdehyde (MDA) assay. The regulating mechanisms among these molecules were studied by RNA immunoprecipitation assay, RNA pull-down assay, ubiquitination assay, dual-luciferase reporter assay and chromatin immunoprecipitation assay. Results We found a novel circRNA circLRFN5 is downregulated in GBM and associated with GBM patients’ poor prognosis. CircLRFN5 overexpression inhibits the cell viabilities, proliferation, neurospheres formation, stemness and tumorigenesis of GSCs via inducing ferroptosis. Mechanistically, circLRFN5 binds to PRRX2 protein and promotes its degradation via a ubiquitin-mediated proteasomal pathway. PRRX2 can transcriptionally upregulate GCH1 expression in GSCs, which is a ferroptosis suppressor via generating the antioxidant tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4). Conclusions Our study found circLRFN5 as a tumor-suppressive circRNA and identified its role in the progression of ferroptosis and GBM. CircLRFN5 can be used as a potential GBM biomarker and become a target for molecular therapies or ferroptosis-dependent therapy in GBM.

Abstract Glioma stem cells (GSCs) are a special kind of cells in GBM showing tumor initiation, self-renewal, and multi-lineage differentiation abilities. Finding novel circRNAs related to GSCs is of great significance for the study of glioma. qPCR, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry were used to detect the expression levels of circKPNB1, SPI1, DGCR8, and TNF-α. The expression of these molecules in GSCs was regulated by lentiviral-based infection. RNA immunoprecipitation assay, RNA pull-down, dual-luciferase reporter, and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays were used to study the direct regulation mechanisms among these molecules. All the MTS, EDU, transwell, neurosphere formation assays, ELDA assays, and xenograft experiments were used to detect the malignant phenotype of GSCs. We found a novel circRNA circKPNB1 was overexpressed in GBM and associated with GBM patients’ poor prognosis. CircKPNB1 overexpression can promote the cell viabilities, proliferation, invasion, neurospheres formation abilities, and stemness of GSCs. Mechanistically, circKPNB1 regulates the protein stability and nuclear translocation of SPI1. SPI1 promotes the malignant phenotype of GSCs via TNF-α mediated NF-κB signaling. SPI1 can also transcriptionally upregulate DGCR8 expression, and the latter can maintain the stability of circKPNB1 and forms a positive feedback loop among DGCR8, circKPNB1 and SPI1. Our study found circKPNB1 was a novel oncogene in GBM and of great significance in the diagnosis and prognosis prediction of GBM and maybe a novel target for molecular targeted therapy.

This paper describes performance enhancement developments to a closed-loop pump-driven wire-guided flow jet (WGJ) for ultrafast X-ray spectroscopy of liquid samples. Achievements include dramatically improved sample surface quality and reduced equipment footprint from 7 × 20 cm2 to 6 × 6 cm2, cost, and manufacturing time. Qualitative and quantitative measurements show that micro-scale wire surface modification yields significant improvements to the topography of the sample liquid surface. By manipulating their wettability, it is possible to better control the liquid sheet thickness and to obtain a smooth liquid sample surface, as demonstrated in this work.

Soil and water are increasingly at risk of contamination from the toxic heavy metals lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd). Arabis paniculata (Brassicaceae) is a hyperaccumulator of heavy metals (HMs) found widely distributed in areas impacts by mining activities. However, the mechanism by which A. paniculata tolerates HMs is still uncharacterized. For this experiment, we employed RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) in order to find Cd (0.25 mM)- and Pb (2.50 mM)-coresponsive genes A. paniculata. In total, 4490 and 1804 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in root tissue, and 955 and 2209 DEGs were identified in shoot tissue, after Cd and Pb exposure, respectively. Interestingly in root tissue, gene expression corresponded similarly to both Cd and Pd exposure, of which 27.48% were co-upregulated and 41.00% were co-downregulated. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Gene Ontology (GO) analyses showed that the co-regulated genes were predominantly involved in transcription factors (TFs), cell wall biosynthesis, metal transport, plant hormone signal transduction, and antioxidant enzyme activity. Many critical Pb/Cd-induced DEGs involved in phytohormone biosynthesis and signal transduction, HM transport, and transcription factors were also identified. Especially the gene ABCC9 was co-downregulated in root tissues but co-upregulated in shoot tissues. The co-downregulation of ABCC9 in the roots prevented Cd and Pb from entering the vacuole rather than the cytoplasm for transporting HMs to shoots. While in shoots, the ABCC9 co-upregulated results in vacuolar Cd and Pb accumulation, which may explain why A. paniculata is a hyperaccumulator. These results will help to reveal the molecular and physiological processes underlying tolerance to HM exposure in the hyperaccumulator A. paniculata, and aid in future efforts to utilize this plant in phytoremediation.

Abstract Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) have been widely studied in biosensing, imaging, information encryption, and optoelectronic devices due to excellent optical properties, such as photostability, tunable luminescence range, and resistance to photobleaching. In recent years, CDs have been explored for use in agriculture. Based on their light harvest and light conversion capacity, as well as their characteristics of easy synthesis and low toxicity, CDs show great potential in improving crop photosynthesis. In addition, CDs can also be used for smart and anticounterfeiting packing, food safety detection, and preservation of crops after harvest. In this study, the application of CDs with excellent optical properties in crops has been summarized, including preharvest processes (photosynthesis and plant imaging), and postharvest processes (crop preservation and food safety). Then the toxicity of CDs to crops is introduced. Finally, the present challenges and future prospects are discussed.

Argument mining (AM), an emerging field in natural language processing (NLP), aims to automatically extract arguments and the relationships between them in texts. In this study, we propose a new method for argument mining of argumentative essays. The method generates dynamic word vectors with BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers), encodes argumentative essays, and obtains word-level and essay-level features with BiLSTM (Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory) and attention training, respectively. By integrating these two levels of features we obtain the full-text features so that the content in the essay is annotated according to Toulmin’s argument model. The proposed method was tested on a corpus of 180 argumentative essays, and the precision of automatic annotation reached 69%. The experimental results show that our model outperforms existing models in argument mining. The model can provide technical support for the automatic scoring system, particularly on the evaluation of the content of argumentative essays.

Dissertation is the most important research genre for graduate students as they step into the academic community. The abstract found at the beginning of the dissertation is an essential part of the dissertation, serving to “sell” the study and impress the readers. Learning to compose a well-organized abstract to promote one's research is therefore an important skill for novice writers when they step into the academic community in their discipline. By comparing 112 dissertation abstracts in material science by Chinese and American doctoral students, this study attempts to analyze not only the rhetorical moves of dissertation abstracts but also the lexical-grammatical features of stance in different abstract moves. The findings show that most of the abstracts include five moves, namely, Situating the research, Presenting the research, Describing the methodology, Summarizing the findings, and Discussing the research. However, fewer abstracts by Chinese students include all five moves. In addition, the choices of stance expressions by the two groups vary across the five abstract moves for different communication purposes. The results of this study have pedagogical implications for facilitating the development of academic writing skills for L2 writers.

Research on Collaborative Writing (CW) has proliferated over recent decades, but the role that pair dynamics plays in second language (L2) learning remains unclear. This study compared the effect of dyadic interactions and proficiency pairing in CW on L2 learning. Sixty-two Chinese EFL learners participated in this study, forming three types of proficiency pairing, including 12 high-high pairs, 12 high-low pairs, and seven low-low pairs. All dialogs were audio-recorded and analyzed for dyadic patterns, as well as frequency, types, and solutions of Language-Related Episodes (LREs). The findings indicated that lexis-focused LREs took the largest proportion of LREs, followed by discourse-focused LREs and grammar-focused LREs in all groups. However, compared with proficiency pairing, the efficacy of dyadic interactions has a greater impact on L2 learning. Learners displaying collaborative patterns significantly produced more LREs and correctly solved the majority of the conflicts than those in non-collaborative interactions, while neither the total number nor solutions of LREs reached significance in different proficiency pairing groups. Pedagogical implications on implementing CW in L2 writing classrooms are discussed.

Abstract The limited lithium resource in earth's crust has stimulated the pursuit of alternative energy storage technologies to lithium‐ion battery. Potassium‐ion batteries (KIBs) are regarded as a kind of promising candidate for large‐scale energy storage owing to the high abundance and low cost of potassium resources. Nevertheless, further development and wide application of KIBs are still challenged by several obstacles, one of which is their fast capacity deterioration at high rates. A considerable amount of effort has recently been devoted to address this problem by developing advanced carbonaceous anode materials with diverse structures and morphologies. This review presents and highlights how the architecture engineering of carbonaceous anode materials gives rise to high‐rate performances for KIBs, and also the beneficial conceptions are consciously extracted from the recent progress. Particularly, basic insights into the recent engineering strategies, structural innovation, and the related advances of carbonaceous anodes for high‐rate KIBs are under specific concerns. Based on the achievements attained so far, a perspective on the foregoing, and proposed possible directions, and avenues for designing high‐rate anodes, are presented finally.

Time-resolved femtosecond-stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS) provides valuable information on the structural dynamics of biomolecules. However, FSRS has been applied mainly up to the nanoseconds regime and above 700 cm−1, which covers only part of the spectrum of biologically relevant time scales and Raman shifts. Here we report on a broadband (~200–2200 cm−1) dual transient visible absorption (visTA)/FSRS set-up that can accommodate time delays from a few femtoseconds to several hundreds of microseconds after illumination with an actinic pump. The extended time scale and wavenumber range allowed us to monitor the complete excited-state dynamics of the biological chromophore flavin mononucleotide (FMN), both free in solution and embedded in two variants of the bacterial light-oxygen-voltage (LOV) photoreceptor EL222. The observed lifetimes and intermediate states (singlet, triplet, and adduct) are in agreement with previous time-resolved infrared spectroscopy experiments. Importantly, we found evidence for additional dynamical events, particularly upon analysis of the low-frequency Raman region below 1000 cm−1. We show that fs-to-sub-ms visTA/FSRS with a broad wavenumber range is a useful tool to characterize short-lived conformationally excited states in flavoproteins and potentially other light-responsive proteins.

For room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials to reach their potential for optical applications, new materials with improved performance must be realized. Here, the authors report multi-confined carbon dots as high stability RTP materials with long afterglow lifetime & high efficiency.

Effective authorial voice in academic writing helps researchers establish the value of their scholarly contributions. However, constructing an authorial voice is challenging for many novice L2 writers. Through tracking multiple drafts of master’s theses written by two Chinese EFL (English as a foreign language) graduate students, this case study investigated changes in their authorial voices and the roles of advisor feedback in this process. We drew on three types of data: analysis of multiple thesis drafts for linguistic and content features of voice; advisor feedback on multiple drafts; and a questionnaire for the student writers’ understanding of authorial voice. The results indicate that the linguistic features of voice in their theses have remained largely unchanged, portraying them as unconfident student writers, but the content features have shown significant improvement, conveying authorial voices of novice researchers in the later drafts. Most of the student revisions followed their advisors’ feedback. The student participants’ questionnaire responses indicate their relative lack of awareness of the importance of language in voice construction. The results suggest that the authorial voice construction of the novice student writers is dynamic, developmental, and interactive with their advisors’ feedback over the thesis writing process. Pedagogically, other than feedback on content features of voice, classroom practitioners could also consider providing explicit instruction of and feedback on linguistic features to help students construct authoritative authorial voice in the academic context.

MiR-223 is a miRNA with important functions in apoptosis, carcinogenesis, and inflammation, and it was demonstrated to be over-expressed in brain tissue after traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, few studies have focused on its role in protecting brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs). This study evaluated the protective effect of miR-223 on BMECs after stretch injury (SI). bEnd.3 cells (BMECs of mouse) were transfected with overexpressing and blocking lentivirus of miR-223, then were subjected to SI. After immunofluorescence assay, it was demonstrated that miR-223 overexpression significantly rescued the SI-induced loss of ZO-1 (Zonula Occludens 1, tight junction protein) (p < 0.01), while miR-223 blocking exacerbated the loss of ZO-1 (p < 0.05). Flow cytometry confirmed a significant increase in the proportion of apoptotic bEnd.3 cells after SI, and miR-223 overexpression reduced this proportion (p < 0.001). The result of Western blot revealed that miR-223 overexpression significantly reduced the expression of cleaved caspase-3 (cl-caspase 3) (p < 0.05) and RhoB (p < 0.01), while miR-223 blocking increased the expression of these proteins (p < 0.05, p < 0.001). Additionally, knockdown of RhoB significantly reduced the expression of cl-caspase 3 (p < 0.001). These findings suggested that miR-223 can alleviate SI-induced apoptosis of BMECs, and this anti-apoptotic effect is at least partially achieved by inhibiting the expression of RhoB. Moreover, miR-223 may play a role in maintaining the integrity of BBB during TBI.

Carbon dots that display long-wavelength and multicolor emission are desirable for biological and anti-counterfeiting applications. Here, the authors design hydrophobic carbon dots with reversible two-mode fluorescence, which exhibit blue emission when dissolved in solution, and red solid-state fluorescence when aggregated.

Reading-to-write is an essential skill in academic writing, and reading-writing tasks have been widely adopted in standardized English tests. Much more recent literature on integrated reading-writing tasks has focused on writers’ use of source texts or the validity of integrated writing assessment, while little is known about whether the nature of the types of reading texts has any bearing on integrated reading-writing tasks. This study examines whether the types of reading texts (i.e., similar views or opposing views on a debatable issue) have any influence on second language (L2) students’ argumentative writing in terms of the use of argument elements and its overall quality. Fifty-four Chinese second-year university students majoring in English language teaching were asked to write an argumentative essay after reading texts with either similar views or opposing views. Results show that students reading texts with opposing viewpoints presented more data and higher overall quality of argumentative essays than students reading texts with similar viewpoints, although the latter group presented more counterargument data. Pedagogical implications on teaching argumentative writing are discussed.

To improve the surface corrosion resistance of ductile iron, Ni-based alloy coatings were prepared using a high-speed laser cladding technology with different levels of laser power. The microstructure, phases, and corrosion properties of the coatings were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and an electrochemical workstation. Variations in laser power did not change the main phases of the coatings, which were composed of γ-Ni, Ni3B, Ni2Si, and Cr23C6. With an increase in power, the degree of segregation in the coating decreased, sufficient melting between elements was achieved, and the chemical composition became more uniform. Enhancement of the laser power resulted in more energy being injected into the cladding, which allowed adequate growth of tissue, and dendrites continued to grow in size as the power increased. The self-corrosion potentials of the coatings at laser power levels of 1.6, 2.0, and 2.4 kW were −625.7, −526.5, and −335.7 mV, respectively. The corrosion potential of the 2.4 kW coating was the highest, and the corroded surface of the cladding layer included mainly sizeable continuous structures with a light degree of corrosion and the highest corrosion resistance.

In this study, laser cladding technology was used to prepare Fe-based alloy coating on a 27SiMn hydraulic support, and a turning treatment was used to obtain samples of the upper and middle regions of the cladding layer. The influence of microstructure, phase composition, hardness, and wear resistance in different areas of the cladding layer was studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), friction and wear tests, and microhardness. The results show that the bcc phase content in the upper region of the cladding layer is less than that in the middle region of the cladding layer, and the upper region of the cladding layer contains more metal compounds. The hardness of the middle region of the cladding layer is higher than that of the upper region of the cladding layer. At the same time, the main wear mechanism of the upper region of the cladding layer is adhesive wear and abrasive wear. The wear mechanism of the middle region of the cladding layer is mainly abrasive wear, with better wear resistance than the upper region of the cladding layer.

Abstract Background Sesamin is a well-known antioxidant extracted from sesame seeds that exhibits various curative effects. The present study investigated whether sesamin would protect neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells against mechanical stretch injury-induced increases in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptosis. Additionally, the mechanisms underlying these actives were investigated. Following exposure to mechanical stretch injury, cells were incubated for further investigations. Lactate dehydrogenase and Cell Counting Kit-8 assays were used to assess cell viability, and a terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay and flow cytometric analysis were performed to evaluate changes in mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm). Furthermore, intracellular levels of ROS production were measured by 20, 70-dichlorofluorescein diacetate staining, the mRNA levels of matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9) were evaluated using real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis, and the determinations had also been made on related proteins by Western blot analysis. Results Exposure to mechanical stretch injury significantly decreased cell viability but this decrease was attenuated by pretreatment with sesamin (50 μM). Sesamin also significantly inhibited mechanical stretch injury-induced increases in intracellular ROS production, attenuated declines in ΔΨm, diminished the expressions of pro-apoptotic proteins, and decreased cell apoptosis. Stretch injury increased Bax and cleaved caspase 3 levels, enhanced the gene expression of MMP-9, increased the phosphorylation levels of Akt, p38, and JNK and decreased Bcl-2 levels in the cells. However, pretreatment with sesamin reduced the mechanical stretch injury-induced overexpression of MMP-9. Conclusions Sesamin protected SH-SY5Y cells against stretch injury by attenuating increases in ROS levels and suppressing apoptosis. Accordingly, sesamin seems to be a potentially therapeutic agent in the treatment of traumatic brain injury.

Recently, SiO2 has attracted wide attention in lithium-ion batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity and low cost. However, the utilization of SiO2 is impeded by the enormous volume expansion and low electric conductivity. Although constructing SiO2/carbon composite can significantly enhance the electrochemical performance, the skillful preparation of the well-defined SiO2/carbon composite is still a remaining challenge. Here, a facile strategy of in situ coating of polydopamine is applied to synthesis of a series of core-shell structured SiO2@carbon composite nanorods with different thicknesses of carbon shells. The carbon shell uniformly coated on the surface of SiO2 nanorods significantly suppresses the volume expansion to some extent, as well as improves the electric conductivity of SiO2. Therefore, the composite nanorods exhibit a remarkable electrochemical performance as the electrode materials of lithium-ion batteries. For instance, a high and stable reversible capacity at a current density of 100 mA g−1 reaches 690 mAh g−1 and a capacity of 344.9 mAh g−1 can be achieved even at the high current density of 1000 mA g−1. In addition, excellent capacity retention reaches 95% over 100 cycles. These SiO2@carbon composite nanorods with decent electrochemical performances hold great potential for applications in lithium-ion batteries.

Molecular couplings between DNA and water together with the accompanying processes of energy exchange are mapped via the ultrafast response of DNA backbone vibrations after OH stretch excitation of the water shell. Native salmon testes DNA is studied in femtosecond pump-probe experiments under conditions of full hydration and at a reduced hydration level with two water layers around the double helix. Independent of their local hydration patterns, all backbone vibrations in the frequency range from 940 to 1120 cm–1 display a quasi-instantaneous reshaping of the spectral envelopes of their fundamental absorption bands upon excitation of the water shell. The subsequent reshaping kinetics encompass a one-picosecond component, reflecting the formation of a hot ground state of the water shell, and a slower contribution on a time scale of tens of picoseconds. Such results are benchmarked by measurements with resonant excitation of the backbone modes, resulting in distinctly different absorption changes. We assign the fast changes of DNA absorption after OH stretch excitation to structural changes in the water shell which couple to DNA through the local electric fields. The second slower process is attributed to a flow of excess energy from the water shell into DNA, establishing a common heated ground state in the molecular ensemble. This interpretation is supported by theoretical calculations of the electric fields exerted by the water shell at different temperatures.

DNA oligomers are studied at 0% and 92% relative humidity, corresponding to N 20 water molecules per base pair. Two-dimensional (2D) infrared spectroscopy of DNA backbone modes between 920 and 1120 cm−1 maps fluctuating interactions at the DNA surface. At both hydration levels, a frequency fluctuation correlation function with a 300 fs decay and a slow decay beyond 10 ps is derived from the 2D lineshapes. The fast component reflects motions of DNA helix, counterions, and water shell. Its higher amplitude at high hydration level reveals a significant contribution of water to the fluctuating forces. The slow component reflects disorder-induced inhomogeneous broadening.

A rapid approach has been developed for the fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) by the hydrothermal treatment of lignin in the presence of H2O2. The as-synthesized CDs were found to emit blue photoluminescence with excellent photostability. Moreover, the CDs displayed biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, and high water solubility properties. Finally, the as-resulted CDs were demonstrated to be excellent probes for bioimaging and biosensing applications.

The design of multifunctional nanocarriers with enhanced photothermal efficiency is of great significance for the photothermal therapy of cancer. In this study, hollow CuS@gold nanorods/polydopamine (HCuS@AuNRs/PDA) nanohybrids with synergistically enhanced photothermal efficiency were prepared by electrostatic self-assembly method. The high photothermal conversion efficiency of HCuS@AuNRs (55.88%) is attributed to the interfacial electron transfer between CuS and AuNRs, as well as the increase in free charge carrier concentration. The excellent adhesion performance and strong negative charge of PDA ensure a high doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) loading efficiency of 96.08% for HCuS@AuNRs/PDA. In addition, HCuS@AuNRs/PDA reveals outstanding NIR/pH dual-responsive drug release properties owing to the weakened interaction between PDA and DOX in acidic media and the distinct NIR responsiveness of HCuS@AuNRs. In vitro cell viability results confirm that HCuS@AuNRs/PDA could efficiently kill tumor cells under the dual effect of acidic media and NIR laser. This study presents a novel nanocarrier with synergistically enhanced NIR photothermal responsiveness and high drug loading capacity, which provides a versatile platform in intelligent drug release and photothermal therapy. Iron is an essential nutrient for plants and plays a crucial role in many physiological processes. Achieving sensitive, rapid, and real-time sensing of Fe3+ within plant organisms using carbon dots remains an intriguing research challenge. In this study, blue-emitting carbon dots (B-CDs) with an average size of 2.22 nm were synthesized through a hydrothermal reaction of sodium citrate and glutathione. The B-CDs exhibited low cytotoxicity and demonstrated high sensitivity and selectivity in fluorescence response toward Fe3+. Experimental evidence indicated that the phenolic hydroxyl groups on the surface of B-CDs formed ground-state complexes with Fe3+, and static quenching was the main quenching mechanism. Furthermore, as a biophotonic probe, B-CDs entered plant organisms during the process of water absorption and accumulated in the vascular bundles, enabling the visualization of Fe3+ sensing. This work successfully achieved Fe3+ sensing within plant organisms using carbon dots, laying a foundation for future applications of carbon dots in visual sensing within plants.
