In the last two decades, the emergence of acoustic metamaterials has offered previously unimaginable possibilities for extraordinary control of sound waves. For example, various extremely light-weight sound attenuation systems based on metamaterials and phononic crystals have been demonstrated. Equipped with reconfigurability, such systems will provide the on-demand controls of the passage or stopping of sound waves and are often called acoustic switches or sound switches. However, so far, no ventilated sound switch has been proposed, which can realize both satisfying sound transmission and ventilation. In this work, we demonstrate a topological ventilated sound switch achieving switchable transmission. This switch is based on the one-dimensional acoustic Su-Schrieffer–Heeger model, which leads to the appearance of the topological interface states, and the sound can be turned on or off with the desired ventilation performance. With only one topological unit, the high transmission ratio (∼20 dB) before and after switch has been demonstrated in both simulations and experiments. It should have potential applications in areas of the acoustic engineering where both specific frequency sound transmission and ventilation are required.

A key process in treating odor gases is predicting the production of odors from domestic waste. In this study, four factors of domestic waste (weight, wet composition, temperature, and fermentation time) were adopted to be the prediction indicators in the prediction for domestic waste odor gases. Machine learning models (Random Forest, XGBoost, LightGBM) were established using the odor intensity values of 512 odor gases from domestic waste. Relationship of plasmonic properties of multiple clusters to molecular interactions and properties of a single cluster or molecule have become increasingly important due to the continuous emergence of molecular and cluster devices or systems. A hybrid phenomenon similar to plasmonic nanoparticle hybridization exists between two molecules with plasmon excitation modes. We use linear-response time-dependent density functional theory, real-time propagation time-dependent density functional theory, the plasmonicity index, and transition contribution maps (TCMs) to identify the plasmon excitation modes for the linear polyenes octatetraene with –OH and –NH2 groups and analyze the hybridization characteristics using charge transitions. The results show that molecular plasmon hybridization exists when the two molecules are coupled. The TCM analysis shows that the plasmon modes and hybridization result from collective and single-particle excitation. The plasmon mode is stronger, and the individual properties of the molecules are maintained after coupling when there is extra charge depose in the molecules because the electrons are moving in the molecules. This study provides new insights into the molecular plasmon hybridization of coupled molecules.

As an interesting phenomenon in the field of surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), the plasmon-driven catalytic reaction (PDSC) induced by plasmonic hot electrons has great value in the research of novel properties of surface plasmons and accuracy of SERS applications. In this work, an optoplasmonic sandwich hybrid structure is proposed for studying PDSC of p -aminothiophenol (PATP) molecules, which is composed of Au film, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) nanoparticles, zeolithic imidazolate (ZIF-8), and single S i O 2 microsphere (Au f i l m @ M O F s @ S i O 2 ). In order to analyze the novel, to the best of our knowledge, phenomenon of the PDSC in this micro-nano structure, the hot electron generation in the MOF without the plasmonic core is carried out by combining the plasmonic enhancement of gold film with the light concentration of microspheres. Experimental data show that the PDSC reactions is dependent on the size of the MOFs nanoparticle and the size of the S i O 2 microsphere, which is confirmed by the electromagnetic field simulation of the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD). Our work not only strengthens the understanding of surface plasmon in optoplasmonic hybrid structures but also has broad application prospects in the SERS and plasmon-driven catalytic fields.

In acoustic engineering, sound-proofing ventilation barriers find wide applications in diverse situations. However, most of the structures only have responses with fixed frequencies and a very narrow frequency range, especially for low frequency acoustics. Here we show a subwavelength acoustic metamaterial based on labyrinthine structures, which possesses tunable sound insulation and ventilation properties. The Fano-like asymmetric transmission dips is formed by the interference between the resonant scattering of discrete states and the background scattering of continuous states. By adjusting the spacing between these two half zigzag molds, the sound insulation dip frequency can shift from 360 Hz to 575 Hz while the free ventilation area ratio is kept to over 36.3% and the total thickness is only about 0.06λ. Moreover, the noise peak frequency can be detected by a microphone detection and adaptive adjustment of the spacing with a small stepping motor is demonstrated, the results agree well with numerical simulations. We anticipate our design may find potential applications in acoustic air vents, soundproofing window and duct noise control.

Benefiting from the noble metal nanoparticle core and organic porous nanoshell, plasmonic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) become a nanostructure with great enhancement of the electromagnetic field and a high density of reaction sites, which has fantastic optical properties in surface plasmon-related fields. In this work, the plasmon-driven interfacial catalytic reactions involving p-aminothiophenol to 4,4'-dimercaptoazobenzene (trans-DMAB) in both the liquid and gaseous phases are studied in plasmonic MOF nanoparticles, which consist of a Ag nanoparticle core and an organic shell (ZIF-8). The surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) spectra recorded at the plasmonic MOF in an aqueous environment demonstrate that the reversible plasmon-driven interfacial catalytic reactions could be modulated by a reductant (NaBH4) or oxidant (H2O2). Also, the situ SERS spectra also point out that plasmonic MOF (AgNP@ZIF-8) nanoparticles exhibit much better catalytic performance in the H2O2 solution compared to pure Ag nanoparticles for the anti-oxidation caused by the MOF shell. It is surprising that although there is greater SERS enhancement obtained at pure Ag nanoparticles, the plasmon-driven interfacial catalytic reactions only occur at plasmonic AgNP@ZIF-8 nanoparticles in the gaseous phase. This interesting phenomenon is further confirmed and analyzed by simulated electromagnetic field distributions, which could be understood by the effective capture of gaseous molecules by the organic porous nanoshell. Our work not only explores the plasmonic MOF nanoparticles with unique optical properties but also strengthens the understanding of plasmon-driven interfacial catalytic reactions.

It is desired to achieve broadband noise reduction while supporting heat and fluids transmission simultaneously. However, attenuating sound energy with simultaneously achieving excellent heat-transferring performance in a fluid environment has yet to be explored. Here, we demonstrate an ultra-broadband absorber with outstanding thermal convection under a fluid environment, whose thickness is only λ/15 (λ is the airborne wavelength). By linearly extending the embedded apertures, the silencer can achieve sound absorption in the range of 455–585 Hz and can block more than 90% of sound energy in the ultra-broadband range of 455–1600 Hz. In addition, the outstanding thermal convection performance of the metamaterial absorber is experimentally demonstrated.

Combined with photonic microstructure and plasmonic nanostructure, the optoplasmonic hybrid structure with fantastic optical properties attracts lots of attentions in recent years. With the help of light enrichment by dielectric photonic microenvironment, the embedded plasmonic nanoantennas generate much greater electromagnetic field enhancement at surface for light harvesting compared to conventional plasmonic nanostructures. In this work, a sandwich optoplasmonic hybrid structure is developed for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection, which is consisted of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres array, self-assembled Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) film and SiO2 microsphere (PMMA@AgNPs@SiO2). The SERS spectra collected on this optoplasmonic substrate point out it has high sensitivity with limit of detection (LOD) at 10 fM. The experimental data demonstrate both the PMMA microarray and SiO2 microsphere play important roles in enrichment of light illuminating at AgNPs for SERS detection, which is confirmed by the simulated electric field distributions. This sandwich optoplasmonic hybrid structure not only enlarges research field of surface plasmon, but also provides a novel SERS subtract for sensitive analysis in chem/bio-field.

The Raman detection of trace substances in complex oil is still a great challenge at present because of the strong disturbance of background activity and the suppression of intensity in spectra caused by complicated components. In this work, a simple and robust approach based on microdroplet liquid-liquid extraction for the real-time Raman spectroscopy monitoring of trace substances in complex oil is reported. Based on unbalanced chemical potentials between water and oil on a microfluidic chip, a target trace molecule is extracted from complex mineral oil to a water microdroplet. Benefiting from the real-time fluorescence intensities of fluorescein in a water microdroplet, the extraction performance is investigated and optimized. The optimal water microdroplet is implemented for the Raman detection of furfural in a complex mineral oil, a typical trace performance marker in electric power equipment, and this exhibits excellent sensitivity with a limit of detection (LOD) of 26 ppb. Compared to traditional detection technology for trace substances in complex oil (high performance liquid chromatography, HPLC), this method greatly simplified the process of measurement, reduced the volume of sample required, had a fast measurement time, and exhibited the prospect of real-time monitoring applications with high sensitivity, which not only promotes the development of oil quality but also enlarges existing knowledge related to using Raman spectroscopy in chem-/bio-sensing.

Exploiting photocatalysts with characteristics of low cost, high reactivity and easy recovery offer great potentials for complete elimination of toxic chemicals and environmental remediation. In this work, Au/TiO2 network-like nanofibers were fabricated using a facile electrospinning technique followed by calcinations in air. Photocatalytic tests indicate that the Au/TiO2 network-like nanofibers possess an excellent photodegradation rate of rhodamine B (RB) under UV, visible and natural light radiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the plasmonic resonance absorption of Au nanoparticles, and photogenerated electrons and holes are effectively separated by the Au/TiO2 heterojunction structures. Furthermore, the three-dimensional network structure can provide a large number of active sites for RB degradation.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has attracted extensive interest due to excellent molecule recognition and sensitive concentration detection. Nevertheless, the coffee ring effect (CR) during the analyte evaporation always causes an uneven distribution of the assembled hot-spots, and hence the unreliable SERS signal is produced. In this study, for the first time, we present a suppressed coffee ring (SCR) system via a combination of a magnetically functionalized membrane and reciprocating magnetic field to dynamically suppress the CR for highly reliable and ultra-sensitive SERS detection. The enrichment mechanism of the nanoparticles and the analyte molecules within the sessile droplet based on the proposed system was studied. We experimentally observed that the driving frequency could well affect the final pattern, and typically a higher driving frequency facilitated a smaller coverage area with better enrichment performance. With the use of R6G molecule and (100 nm) gold nanoparticles, we examined the uniformity and SERS of the assembled ‘hot-spots’ in the SCR system. The results indicate that the uniformity can be greatly improved via SCR in comparison of ring stain, with the RSD of a Raman signal as low as 7.1% even at a low concentration of 10−12 mol L−1. Such system also enables the further enhancement in the SERS signal, with the detection limit down to 10−16 mol L−1, the enhancement factor magnitude up to 1013, and the linear relationship between the SERS intensity and the analyte concentrations within the range of 10−6–10−12 and 10−12–10−16 mol L−1, respectively. The applicability of the SCR-based SERS detection for diverse analytes was also proved with a similar but further enhanced signal of MB and 4-ATP. We believe that the excellent SCR-based SERS performance via the proposed system has great potentials for ultra-sensitive detection and/or precise quantitative analysis in various research fields and applications.

Combining plasmonic and photonic elements, optoplasmonic hybrid structure exhibits excellent optical properties beyond conventional plasmonic or photonic structures. In this work, the optoplasmonic film consists of SiO2 microsphere and Au film without any nanostructures is investigated. With the help of a microsphere, the intensity of surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) on Au film is highly enhanced (~1000 times) compared to bare Au film. The simulated electromagnetic field points out the enhancement caused by the optical lens effect of SiO2 microsphere that high light intensity is generated under the microsphere to excite surface plasmon on Au film. Furthermore, our data demonstrates the microsphere lens enhancement is greatly influenced by the size of the SiO2 microsphere and wavelength of incident light. This interesting film with a simple configuration could overcome the challenges in the fabrication and store process induced by nanostructures, which play an important role in SERS application. Our work not only enlarges the knowledge of the optoplasmonic hybrid structure, but also exhibits excellent application prospective in light harvest field e.g. enhanced spectrum, photocatalysis, optothermal effect, and hot electron generation, etc.

Nanogaps are one of the most useful systems in nanooptics. The gap modes in a film coupled dielectric nanoparticle dimer system are influenced by both of the film and the electric and magnetic modes of the particles. In this work, strong confinement of gap modes of dielectric (Si) nanoparticle dimer on Au/Si film is investigated. The results show an abnormal electric field enhancement obtained between Si nanoparticle dimer on metal film, which is attributed to film coupled electric and magnetic dipole modes in dielectric nanoparticle dimer. The results are further analyzed with mode hybridization theory. Furthermore, the surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is performed to demonstrate these theoretical analyses. The film induced electromagnetic field redistribution in dielectric nanoparticle dimer not only extend the knowledge of dielectric gap modes but also has tremendous applications, e.g. light manipulating in subwavelength, light harvest, surface enhanced spectrum, etc.

Benefiting from the induced image charge on film surface, the nanoparticle aggregating on metal exhibits interesting optical properties. In this work, a linear metal nanoparticle trimer on metal film system has been investigated to explore the novel optical phenomenon. Both the electric field and surface charge distributions demonstrate the light is focused on film greatly by the nanoparticles at two sides, which could be strongly modulated by the wavelength of incident light. And the influence of nanoparticle in middle on this light focusing ability has also been studied here, which is explained by the plasmon hybridization theory. Our finding about light focusing in nanoparticle aggregating on metal film not only enlarges the novel phenomenon of surface plasmon but also has great application prospect in the field of surface-enhanced spectra, surface catalysis, solar cells, water splitting, etc.

Combining both localized surface plasmon polaritons (LSPPs) and propagating surface plasmon polaritons, remote surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) emerges as a novel sensing technology in recent years, which could avoid the overlap of incident light and inelastic scattering light in SERS. Compared to traditional SERS, it has novel applications in sensors, plasmon-driven surface-catalyzed reactions, Raman optical activity, etc. However, the weak Raman intensity of remote SERS impedes its further application. In this work, we demonstrated that the remote SERS signals could be enhanced by more than 100% through the subwavelength interference in dual-path-excited Ag-branched nanowire dimer and nanowire-nanoparticle systems. Our experiment has revealed that remote SERS intensities could be modulated by polarization and phase differences of two incident lights illuminating at two separate nanowire terminals. The simulated electromagnetic field distributions through the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method indicate that subwavelength interference occurs in Ag nanowires, which causes the Raman intensities collected at a remote site is greatly influenced by the coherent superposition of propagating surface plasmon polaritons (PSPPs). Our work on this coherent enhancement could not only promote the application of remote SERS but also enlarge the research on light manipulating in the subwavelength.

For most acoustic metamaterials, once they have been fabricated, their operating frequencies and functions cannot be adjusted, which is an intrinsic barrier for development of realistic applications. The study to overcome this limit has become a significant issue in acoustic metamaterial engineering. Although with the advance of metamaterials in the past two decades, a series of methods such as electric or magnetic control have been proposed, most of them can only work in the condition of no fluid passage. Some metamaterials with large transmission losses have been proposed, but the sounds are essentially reflected rather than absorbed. Here, to overcome this intrinsic difficulty, we propose a ventilated sound absorber that can be manually tuned in a large range after being manufactured. During the tuning which is achieved through an intricately designed slider, high-performance absorption and ventilation are both ensured. The tunable ventilated sound absorber is demonstrated experimentally and the effective model of coupled lossy oscillators can be employed to understand its mechanism. The manually tunable ventilated metamaterial has the potential application values in various complicated pipe systems that require frequency adjustment and it also establishes the foundation for future development of active tunable ventilated acoustic metamaterials.

Sensitive in situ detection of organic molecules is highly demanded in environmental monitoring. In this work, the surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is adopted in microfluidics to detect the organic molecules with high accuracy and high sensitivity. Here the SERS substrate in microchannel consists of Ag nanoparticles synthesized by chemical reduction. The data indicates the fabrication conditions have great influence on the sizes and distributions of Ag nanoparticles, which play an important role on the SERS enhancement. This result is further confirmed by the simulation of electromagnetic field distributions based on finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. Furthermore, the SERS spectra of organic molecule (methylene blue) obtained in this plasmonic microfluidic system exhibit good reproducibility with high sensitivity. By a combination of SERS and microfluidics, our work not only explores the research field of plasmonics but also has broad application prospects in environmental monitoring.

The metal nanoparticle aggregated on film, as an effective plasma enhancement pathway, has been widely used in various surface plasmon-related fields. In this study, the hot spots on the metal nanoparticle dimer composed of different materials (Ag Au, Ag Pd, and Ag Cu) on metal (Au) film were investigated with finite element method . Based on the results, the hot spot distribution affected by the material can be confirmed by the electric field distribution of the metal nanoparticle dimer on the film. The aggregation effects of Au and Ag nanoparticles in Au Ag dimer system are not significant. However, for the Pd Ag dimer system, the hot spot aggregation effect is slightly larger than that of the Pd nanoparticle under the Ag nanoparticle. Besides, the non-uniform hot spots would bring about the light focusing phenomenon that the light intensity under Ag nanoparticle is almost 100 times greater than that under Cu nanoparticle in Ag Cu dimer system. These results were further confirmed by the surface charge distribution, and analyzed based on the plasmonic hybridization theory. The data about the nanoparticle dimer on the dielectric (Si) film demonstrate the importance of induced image charges on the film surface in such a light focusing phenomenon. Our findings can enhance the understanding of the surface plasmon coupling in different materials, which may have great application prospects in surface plasmon-related fields, such as SERS, plasmonic enhanced solar cell, and plasmonic sensoring, etc.

As an ultrasensitive sensing technology, the application of surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is one interesting topic of nano-optics, which has huge application prospectives in plenty of research fields. In recent years, the bottleneck in SERS application could be the fabrication of SERS substrate with excellent enhancement. In this work, a two-dimensional (2D) Ag nanorice film is fabricated by self-assembly method as a SERS substrate. The collected SERS spectra of various molecules on this 2D plasmonic film demonstrate quantitative detection could be performed on this SERS substrate. The experiment data also demonstrate this 2D plasmonic film consisted of anisotropic nanostructures has no obvious SERS polarization dependence. The simulated electric field distribution points out the SERS enhancement comes from the surface plasmon coupling between nanorices. And the SERS signals is dominated by molecules adsorbed at different regions of nanorice surface at various wavelengths, which could be a good near IR SERS substrate for bioanalysis. Our work not only enlarges the surface plasmon properties of metal nanostructure, but also exhibits the good application prospect in SERS related fields.

Lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal has great application potential in the areas of the biology, medicine, and optics due to its biocompatibility, nontoxicity, biodegradability and birefringence. The rotating magnetic field method was used to measure the rotational viscosity of nematic Sunset Yellow, disodium cromoglycate and Sunset Yellow doping of magnesium sulfate, sodium chloride and sodium hydroxide at various temperatures and concentrations. The rotational viscosity of nematic lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals is positively correlated with the square of the average length of columnar aggregates, increasing with the increase of concentration, but decreasing exponentially as temperature increases. This paper established a universal empirical expression of the rotational viscosity of nematic lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals and presented that the largest relative deviation between theoretical calculation and experimental results is only 22.60%. The rotational viscosity of nematic lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals becomes intensive with the increasing of magnesium sulfate and sodium chloride concentrations, while it reduces with the increase of sodium hydroxide concentration. The “one-step method” is proposed here that one sample of nematic LCLCs at various temperatures can replace normal materials to evaluate the influences of the shape anisotropy of molecules or colloidal particles on the research target, such as physical property parameters, depletion interaction potentials, and so on. This method is based on the self-assembly ability difference of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal molecules at various temperatures and has been proved to be reliable by comparison with the results obtained from many samples of nematic 5CB, CBP5, 5PCB, et al.

In this paper, a new optoplasmonic tweezer is theoretically proposed by using the Au nanobowtie and S i O 2 microsphere. The finite-difference time-domain simulation is used to study the influence of the size of the S i O 2 microsphere and the S i O 2 hemisphere in polydimethylsiloxane on the optical potential well. The simulation results show that the electric field intensity of the structure is increased by 6 times compared with the Au nanobowtie structure, and the gradient force and the trapping potential are also significantly improved.

Electroosmotic pumps have been widely used in microfluidic systems. However, traditional high-voltage (HV)-sources are bulky in size and induce numerous accessional reactions, which largely reduce the system's portability and efficiency. Herein, a motion-controlled, highly efficient micro-flow pump based on triboelectricity driven electroosmosis is reported. Utilizing the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), a strong electric field can be formed between two electrodes in the microfluidic channel with an electric double layer, thus driving the controllable electroosmotic flow by biomechanical movements. The performance and operation mechanism of this triboelectric electroosmotic pump (TEOP) is systematically studied and analyzed using a basic free-standing mode TENG. The TEOP produces ≈600 nL min-1 micro-flow with a Joule heat down to 1.76 J cm-3 nL-1 compared with ≈50 nL min-1 and 8.12 J cm-3 nL-1 for an HV-source. The advantages of economy, efficiency, portability, and safety render the TEOP a more conducive option to achieve wider applications in motion-activated micro/nanofluidic transportation and manipulation.
