A database of 115 bio-actives from seven subclasses, including information on retention time, parent ion m/z, fragment m/z, and isotopic fit, was established, and an instrumental method for simultaneous analysis of these targets was optimised. An ultrasound-assisted preparation method at 50 °C for 50 min with a 1:60 solid-liquid ratio, water as the solvent was proposed for the screening of unknown components and the antioxidant analysis in saffron. The self-built database and untargeted analysis identified 32 and 103 bio-actives in saffron, respectively. The comparative analysis revealed that the antioxidant capacity of saffron petals was superior to that of stigmas. Correlation and multivariate statistical analyses indicated that terpenoids may be the main active substances in stigmas, while flavonoids and carboxylic acid derivatives play a pivotal role in conferring antioxidant activity to de-stigmatised saffron. The method serves as an ideal tool for mining the functional components of saffron and other agricultural products.

Protein products perform important roles in the biochemistry field, but the thermal inactivation of proteins will increase the difficulty of their transport, storage and application. Therefore, improving the thermal stability of proteins has become a thorny challenge. Natural molecular chaperones can efficiently improve the resistance of proteins to environmental stimuli by reversible supramolecular assembly with proteins. Inspired by this machine, herein we designed a nanochaperone (nChap) with thermo-responsive amphiphilic surfaces that can prevent thermal denaturation and facilitate refolding of green fluorescent proteins (GFPs). By mimicking the hydrophobic microregion of natural chaperones, this nChap can effectively capture free GFPs and hide them into surface confined spaces, thereby shielding exposed hydrophobic sites of GFPs and preventing their irreversible thermal aggregation. When the heat stimulation disappeared, the thermosensitive segments of the nChaps underwent the hydrophilic transition, which provided suitable microenvironments for GFPs refolding. More importantly, nChaps could also actively adsorb to the surface of immobilized GFPs at high temperatures and realize the satisfactory dissociation of the nChap-protein complex upon cooling, which exhibited excellent chaperone-like activity. This work provides significant insights for understanding and developing strategies to improve protein stability.

This study evaluates the relative and combined effectiveness of seaweed rafts and light traps in attracting juvenile fish, focusing on diel variations in juvenile fish assemblage in the tropical coastal waters of Gaolong Bay, Wenchang City, Hainan Province. Sampling was conducted in May 2023 during various time periods using self-made artificial drifting seaweed rafts and light traps. The nonparametric Kruskal–Wallis was employed to compare the diversity and catch per unit effort of juvenile fish across different time periods and sampling methods. The Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance, heatmaps, and Principal Coordinates Analysis were used to analyze and visualize the differences between juvenile fish assemblages. Our findings indicate that light traps were particularly effective during nocturnal periods, capturing a diverse array of species and achieving the highest richness and evenness indices. Seaweed rafts demonstrated the lowest diversity indices, largely due to the dominance of specific species, which likely contributed to the competitive exclusion of other species. Seaweed rafts showed significant effectiveness during noon, providing critical habitat and shelter that attracted juvenile fish despite the lower diversity. While each method demonstrated specific advantages, their combined approach did not significantly improve juvenile fish aggregation compared to the individual method. These findings underscore the importance of considering diel and tidal cycles in the selection of sampling methods, as aligning the method with the time of day can greatly enhance the accuracy of biodiversity assessments, leading to more informed conservation and management strategies for tropical coastal waters.

We present the results of a James Webb Space Telescope NIRCam and NIRSpec investigation into the young massive star cluster (YMC) population of NGC 3256, the most cluster-rich luminous infrared galaxy in the Great Observatories All Sky LIRG Survey. We detect 3061 compact YMC candidates with a signal-to-noise ratio ≥3 at F150W, F200W, and F335M. Based on yggdrasil stellar population models, we identify 116/3061 sources with F150W – F200W > 0.47 and F200W – F355M > −1.37 colors, suggesting that they are young ( t ≤ 5 Myr), dusty ( A _V = 5−15), and massive ( M _⊙ > 10 ^5 ). This increases the sample of dust-enshrouded YMCs detected in this system by an order of magnitude relative to previous Hubble Space Telescope studies. With NIRSpec integral field unit pointings centered on the northern and southern nucleus, we extract the Pa α and 3.3 μ m polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) equivalent widths for eight bright and isolated YMCs. Variations in both the F200W – F335M color and 3.3 μ m PAH emission with the Pa α line strength suggest a rapid dust clearing ( 0) correspond to sources with E ( B − V ) > 3, which are typically missed in UV-optical studies. This underscores the importance of deep near-infrared imaging for finding and characterizing these very young and dust-embedded sources.

Summary: Background: Maternal lipidomic profiling offers promise for characterizing lipid metabolites during pregnancy, but longitudinal data are limited. This study aimed to examine associations of longitudinal lipidomic profiles during pregnancy with multiple neonatal anthropometry using data from a multiracial cohort. Methods: We measured untargeted plasma lipidome profiles among 321 pregnant women from the NICHD Fetal Growth Study-Singletons using plasma samples collected longitudinally during four study visits at gestational weeks (GW) 10–14, 15–26, 23–31, and 33–39, respectively. We evaluated individual lipidomic metabolites at each study visit in association with neonatal anthropometry. We also evaluated the associations longitudinally by constructing lipid networks using weighted correlation network analysis and common networks using consensus network analysis across four visits using linear mixed-effects models with the adjustment of false discover rate. Findings: Multiple triglycerides (TG) were positively associated with birth weight (BW), BW Z-score, length and head circumference, while some cholesteryl ester (CE), phosphatidylcholine (PC), sphingomyelines (SM), phosphatidylethanolamines (PE), and lysophosphatidylcholines (LPC 20:3) families were inversely associated with BW, length, abdominal and head circumference at different GWs. Longitudinal trajectories of TG, PC, and glucosylcermides (GlcCer) were associated with BW, and CE (18:2) with BW z-score, length, and sum of skinfolds (SS), while some PC and PE were significantly associated with abdominal and head circumference. Modules of TG at GW 10–14 and 15–26 mainly were associated with BW. At GW 33–39, two networks of LPC (20:3) and of PC, TG, and CE, showed inverse associations with abdominal circumference. Distinct trajectories within two consensus modules with changes in TG, CE, PC, and LPC showed significant differences in BW and length. Interpretation: The results demonstrated that longitudinal changes of TGs during early- and mid-pregnancy and changes of PC, LPC, and CE during late-pregnancy were significantly associated with neonatal anthropometry. Background: A growing interest in long-term sequelae of COVID-19 has prompted several systematic literature reviews (SLRs) to evaluate long-COVID-19 effects. However, many of these reviews lack in-depth information on the timing, duration, and severity of these conditions. Objectives: Our aim was to synthesize both qualitative and quantitative evidence on prevalence and outcomes of long-term effect of COVID-19 through an umbrella review. Design: Umbrella review of relevant SLRs on long-COVID-19 in terms of prolonged symptoms and clinical conditions, and comprehensively synthesized the latest existing evidence. Data Sources and Methods: We systematically identified and appraised prior systematic reviews/meta-analyses using MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane database of systematic review from 2020 to 2021 following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidance. We summarized and categorized all relevant clinical symptoms and outcomes in adults with COVID-19 using the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities System Organ Class (MedDRA SOC). Results: We identified 967 systematic reviews/meta-analyses; 36 were retained for final data extraction. The most prevalent SOC were social circumstances (40%), blood and lymphatic system disorders (39%), and metabolism and nutrition disorder (38%). The most frequently reported SOC outcomes within each MedDRA category were poor quality of life (59%), wheezing and dyspnea (19−49%), fatigue (30−64%), chest pain (16%), decreased or loss of appetite (14–17%), abdominal discomfort or digestive disorder (12−18%), arthralgia with or without myalgia (16–24%), paresthesia (27%) and hair loss (14–25%), and hearing loss or tinnitus (15%). Conclusion: This study confirmed a high prevalence of several long COVID-19 outcomes according to the MedDRA categories and indicated that the majority of evidence was rated as moderate to low. We present new JWST NIRSpec integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data for the luminous infrared galaxy NGC 7469, a nearby (70.6 Mpc) active galaxy with a Seyfert 1.5 nucleus that drives a highly ionized gas outflow and a prominent nuclear star-forming ring. Using the superb sensitivity and high spatial resolution of the JWST instrument NIRSpec IFS, we investigate the role of the Seyfert nucleus in the excitation and dynamics of the circumnuclear gas. Our analysis focuses on the [Fe ii ], H _2 , and hydrogen recombination lines that trace the radiation/shocked-excited molecular and ionized interstellar medium around the active galactic nucleus (AGN). We investigate gas excitation through H _2 /Br γ and [Fe ii ]/Pa β emission line ratios and find that photoionization by the AGN dominates within the central 300 pc of the galaxy except in a small region that shows signatures of shock-heated gas; these shock-heated regions are likely associated with a compact radio jet. In addition, the velocity field and velocity dispersion maps reveal complex gas kinematics. Rotation is the dominant feature, but we also identify noncircular motions consistent with gas inflows as traced by the velocity residuals and the spiral pattern in the Pa α velocity dispersion map. The inflow is 2 orders of magnitude higher than the AGN accretion rate. The compact nuclear radio jet has enough power to drive the highly ionized outflow. This scenario suggests that the inflow and outflow are in a self-regulating feeding–feedback process, with a contribution from the radio jet helping to drive the outflow.

The enormous increase in mid-IR sensitivity and spatial and spectral resolution provided by the JWST spectrographs enables, for the first time, detailed extragalactic studies of molecular vibrational bands. This opens an entirely new window for the study of the molecular interstellar medium in luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). We present a detailed analysis of rovibrational bands of gas-phase CO, H _2 O, C _2 H _2 , and HCN toward the heavily obscured eastern nucleus of the LIRG VV 114, as observed by NIRSpec and the medium resolution spectrograph on the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI MRS). Spectra extracted from apertures of 130 pc in radius show a clear dichotomy between the obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) and two intense starburst regions. We detect the 2.3 μ m CO bandheads, characteristic of cool stellar atmospheres, in the star-forming regions, but not toward the AGN. Surprisingly, at 4.7 μ m, we find highly excited CO ( T _ex ≈ 700–800 K out to at least rotational level J = 27) toward the star-forming regions, but only cooler gas ( T _ex ≈ 200 K) toward the AGN. We conclude that only mid-infrared pumping through the rovibrational lines can account for the equilibrium conditions found for CO and H _2 O in the deeply embedded starbursts. Here, the CO bands probe regions with an intense local radiation field inside dusty young massive star clusters or near the most massive young stars. The lack of high-excitation molecular gas toward the AGN is attributed to geometric dilution of the intense radiation from the bright point source. An overview of the relevant excitation and radiative transfer physics is provided in an appendix.

We present the CO(1–0) maps of 28 infrared-bright galaxies from the Great Observatories All-Sky Luminous Infrared Galaxy Survey (GOALS) taken with the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy (CARMA). We detect 100 GHz continuum in 16 of the 28 CARMA GOALS galaxies, which trace both active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and compact star-forming cores. The GOALS galaxies show a variety of molecular gas morphologies, though in the majority of cases the average velocity fields show a gradient consistent with rotation. We fit the full continuum spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of each of the sources using either magphys or SED3FIT (if there are signs of an AGN) to derive the total stellar mass, dust mass, and SFRs of each object. We adopt a value determined from luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs) of α _CO = ${1.5}_{-0.8}^{+1.3}$ M _⊙ (K km s ^−1 pc ^2 ) ^−1 , which leads to more physical values for f _mol and the gas-to-dust ratio. Mergers tend to have the highest gas-to-dust ratios. We assume the cospatiality of the molecular gas and star formation and plot the CARMA GOALS sample on the Schmidt–Kennicutt relation, where we find that they preferentially lie above the line set by normal star-forming galaxies. This hyper-efficiency is likely due to the increased turbulence in these systems, which decreases the freefall time compared to star-forming galaxies, leading to “enhanced” star formation efficiency. Line wings are present in a non-negligible subsample (11/28) of the CARMA GOALS sources and are likely due to outflows driven by AGNs or star formation, gas inflows, or additional decoupled gas components.

We present the results of a James Webb Space Telescope NIRCam investigation into the young massive star cluster (YMC) population in the luminous infrared galaxy VV 114. We identify 374 compact YMC candidates with signal-to-noise ratios ≥ 3, 5, and 5 at F150W, F200W, and F356W, respectively. A direct comparison with our HST cluster catalog reveals that ∼20% of these sources are undetected at optical wavelengths. Based on yggdrasil stellar population models, we identify 17 YMC candidates in our JWST imaging alone with F150W – F200W and F200W – F356W colors suggesting they are all very young, dusty ( A _V = 5–15), and massive (10 ^5.8 < M _⊙ < 10 ^6.1 ). The discovery of these “hidden” sources, many of which are found in the “overlap” region between the two nuclei, quadruples the number of t < 3 Myr clusters and nearly doubles the number of t < 6 Myr clusters detected in VV 114. Now extending the cluster age distribution ( ${dN}/d\tau \propto {\tau }^{\gamma }$ ) to the youngest ages, we find a slope of γ = −1.30 ± 0.39 for 10 ^6 < τ (yr) < 10 ^7 , which is consistent with the previously determined value from 10 ^7 < τ (yr) < 10 ^8.5 , and confirms that VV 114 has a steep age distribution slope for all massive star clusters across the entire range of cluster ages observed. Finally, the consistency between our JWST- and HST-derived age distribution slopes indicates that the balance between cluster formation and destruction has not been significantly altered in VV 114 over the last 0.5 Gyr.

We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) imaging of NGC 7469 with the Near-Infrared Camera and the Mid-InfraRed Instrument. NGC 7469 is a nearby, z = 0.01627, luminous infrared galaxy that hosts both a Seyfert Type-1.5 nucleus and a circumnuclear starburst ring with a radius of ∼0.5 kpc. The new near-infrared (NIR) JWST imaging reveals 66 star-forming regions, 37 of which were not detected by Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations. Twenty-eight of the 37 sources have very red NIR colors that indicate obscurations up to A _v ∼ 7 and a contribution of at least 25% from hot dust emission to the 4.4 μ m band. We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) integral field spectroscopy of the nearby luminous infrared galaxy NGC 7469. We take advantage of the high spatial/spectral resolution and wavelength coverage of JWST/NIRSpec to study the 3.3 μ m neutral polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) grain emission on ∼200 pc scales. A clear change in the average grain properties between the star-forming ring and the central AGN is found. Regions in the vicinity of the AGN, with [Ne iii ]/[Ne ii ] > 0.25, tend to have larger grain sizes and lower aliphatic-to-aromatic (3.4/3.3) ratios, indicating that smaller grains are preferentially removed by photodestruction in the vicinity of the AGN. PAH emission at the nucleus is weak and shows a low 11.3/3.3 PAH ratio. We find an overall suppression of the total PAH emission relative to the ionized gas in the central 1 kpc region of the AGN in NGC 7469 compared to what has been observed with Spitzer on 3 kpc scales. However, the fractional 3.3 μ m–to–total PAH power is enhanced in the starburst ring, possibly due to a variety of physical effects on subkiloparsec scales, including recurrent fluorescence of small grains or multiple photon absorption by large grains. Finally, the IFU data show that while the 3.3 μ m PAH-derived star formation rate (SFR) in the ring is 27% higher than that inferred from the [Ne ii ] and [Ne iii ] emission lines, the integrated SFR derived from the 3.3 μ m feature would be underestimated by a factor of 2 due to the deficit of PAHs around the AGN, as might occur if a composite system like NGC 7469 were to be observed at high redshift.

Abstract Background/objectives There is evidence of black–white differences in vitamin D status and cardiometabolic health. This study aimed to further evaluate the joint associations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and parathyroid hormone (PTH) with risks of diabetes and related cardiometabolic comorbidities among white and black women. Subjects/methods We cross-sectionally and prospectively analyzed data from 1850 black and 3000 white postmenopausal women without cardiovascular disease or dialysis at baseline from the Women’s Health Initiative—Observational Study. Weighted Cox proportional hazards analyses and weighted logistic regression models were used to examine the joint associations of 25(OH)D and PTH with incident diabetes and prevalence of other diabetes-related cardiometabolic comorbidities (including CKD, hypertension, or obesity). Results We identified 3322 cases of obesity (n = 1629), hypertension (n = 2759), or CKD (n = 318) at baseline and 453 incident cases of diabetes during 11 years of follow-up. Cross-sectionally, lower 25(OH)D and higher PTH were independently associated with higher prevalence of hypertension [odds ratio (OR) = 0.79; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.72–0.87 and OR = 1.55; 95% CI: 1.39–1.73] among white women only. When stratified by diabetes status, compared to women with 25(OH)D ≥50 nmol/L and PTH ≤6.89 pmol/L (65 pg/mL), women who did not have diabetes with vitamin D deficiency (6.89 pmol/L) had higher prevalence of CKD, hypertension, or obesity (OR = 4.23; 95% CI: 2.90–6.18) than women who had diabetes (OR = 1.89; 95% CI: 0.96–3.71). Prospectively, lower 25(OH)D was associated with lower diabetes incidence [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.73; 95% CI: 0.62–0.86] in white women. James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) images of the luminous infrared (IR) galaxy VV 114 are presented. This redshift ∼0.020 merger has a western component (VV 114W) rich in optical star clusters and an eastern component (VV 114E) hosting a luminous mid-IR nucleus hidden at UV and optical wavelengths by dust lanes. With MIRI, the VV 114E nucleus resolves primarily into bright NE and SW cores separated by 630 pc. This nucleus comprises 45% of the 15 μ m light of VV 114, with the NE and SW cores having IR luminosities, L _IR (8 − 1000 μ m) ∼ 8 ± 0.8 × 10 ^10 L _⊙ and ∼ 5 ± 0.5 × 10 ^10 L _⊙ , respectively, and IR densities, Σ _IR ≳ 2 ± 0.2 × 10 ^13 L _⊙ kpc ^−2 and ≳ 7 ± 0.7 × 10 ^12 L _⊙ kpc ^−2 , respectively—in the range of Σ _IR for the Orion star-forming core and the nuclei of Arp 220. The NE core, previously speculated to have an active galactic nucleus (AGN), has starburst-like mid-IR colors. In contrast, the VV 114E SW core has AGN-like colors. Approximately 40 star-forming knots with L _IR ∼ 0.02–5 × 10 ^10 L _⊙ are identified, 28% of which have no optical counterpart. Finally, diffuse emission accounts for 40%–60% of the mid-IR emission. Mostly notably, filamentary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission stochastically excited by UV and optical photons accounts for half of the 7.7 μ m light of VV 114. This study illustrates the ability of JWST to detect obscured compact activity and distributed PAH emission in the most extreme starburst galaxies in the local universe.

We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) integral-field spectroscopy of the nearby merging, luminous infrared galaxy, NGC 7469. This galaxy hosts a Seyfert type-1.5 nucleus, a highly ionized outflow, and a bright, circumnuclear star-forming ring, making it an ideal target to study active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback in the local universe. We take advantage of the high spatial/spectral resolution of JWST/MIRI to isolate the star-forming regions surrounding the central active nucleus and study the properties of the dust and warm molecular gas on ∼100 pc scales. The starburst ring exhibits prominent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission, with grain sizes and ionization states varying by only ∼30%, and a total star formation rate of 10–30 M _⊙ yr ^−1 derived from fine structure and recombination emission lines. Using pure rotational lines of H _2 we detect 1.2 × 10 ^7 M _⊙ of warm molecular gas at a temperature higher than 200 K in the ring. All PAH bands get significantly weaker toward the central source, where larger and possibly more ionized grains dominate the emission, likely the result of the ionizing radiation and/or the fast wind emerging from the AGN. The small grains and warm molecular gas in the bright regions of the ring however display properties consistent with normal star-forming regions. These observations highlight the power of JWST to probe the inner regions of dusty, rapidly evolving galaxies for signatures of feedback and inform models that seek to explain the coevolution of supermassive black holes and their hosts.

The nearby, luminous infrared galaxy NGC 7469 hosts a Seyfert nucleus with a circumnuclear star-forming ring and is thus the ideal local laboratory for investigating the starburst–AGN (active galactic nucleus) connection in detail. We present integral-field observations of the central 1.3 kpc region in NGC 7469 obtained with the JWST Mid-InfraRed Instrument. Molecular and ionized gas distributions and kinematics at a resolution of ∼100 pc over the 4.9–7.6 μ m region are examined to study the gas dynamics influenced by the central AGN. The low-ionization [Fe ii ] λ 5.34 μ m and [Ar ii ] λ 6.99 μ m lines are bright on the nucleus and in the starburst ring, as opposed to H _2 S(5) λ 6.91 μ m, which is strongly peaked at the center and surrounding ISM. The high-ionization [Mg v ] line is resolved and shows a broad, blueshifted component associated with the outflow. It has a nearly face-on geometry that is strongly peaked on the nucleus, where it reaches a maximum velocity of −650 km s ^−1 , and extends about 400 pc to the east. Regions of enhanced velocity dispersion in H _2 and [Fe ii ] ∼ 180 pc from the AGN that also show high L (H _2 )/ L (PAH) and L ([Fe ii ])/ L (Pf α ) ratios to the W and N of the nucleus pinpoint regions where the ionized outflow is depositing energy, via shocks, into the dense interstellar medium between the nucleus and the starburst ring. These resolved mid-infrared observations of the nuclear gas dynamics demonstrate the power of JWST and its high-sensitivity integral-field spectroscopic capability to resolve feedback processes around supermassive black holes in the dusty cores of nearby luminous infrared galaxies.

We have used the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to obtain the first spatially resolved, mid-infrared images of IIZw096, a merging luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) at z = 0.036. Previous observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope suggested that the vast majority of the total IR luminosity ( L _IR ) of the system originated from a small region outside of the two merging nuclei. New observations with JWST/MIRI now allow an accurate measurement of the location and luminosity density of the source that is responsible for the bulk of the IR emission. We estimate that 40%–70% of the IR bolometric luminosity, or 3–5 × 10 ^11 L _⊙ , arises from a source no larger than 175 pc in radius, suggesting a luminosity density of at least 3–5 × 10 ^12 L _⊙ kpc ^−2 . In addition, we detect 11 other star-forming sources, five of which were previously unknown. The MIRI F1500W/F560W colors of most of these sources, including the source responsible for the bulk of the far-IR emission, are much redder than the nuclei of local LIRGs. These observations reveal the power of JWST to disentangle the complex regions at the hearts of merging, dusty galaxies.

We report the detection of stimulated hydrogen radio recombination line (RRL) emission from ionized gas in a z = 0.89 galaxy using 580–1670 MHz observations from the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey. The RRL emission originates in a galaxy that intercepts and strongly lenses the radio blazar PKS 1830−211 ( z = 2.5). This is the second detection of RRLs outside of the local Universe and the first clearly associated with hydrogen. We detect effective H144 α (and H163 α ) transitions at observed frequencies of 1156 (798) MHz by stacking 17 (27) RRLs with 21 σ (14 σ ) significance. The RRL emission contains two main velocity components and is coincident in velocity with H i 21 cm and OH 18 cm absorption. We use the RRL spectral line energy distribution and a Bayesian analysis to constrain the density ( n _e ) and the volume-averaged path length ( ℓ ) of the ionized gas. We determine $\mathrm{log}({n}_{e})={2.0}_{-0.7}^{+1.0}$ cm ^−3 and $\mathrm{log}({\ell })=-{0.7}_{-1.1}^{+1.1}$ pc toward the northeast (NE) lensed image, likely tracing the diffuse thermal phase of the ionized ISM in a thin disk. Toward the southwest (SW) lensed image, we determine $\mathrm{log}({n}_{e})={3.2}_{-1.0}^{+0.4}$ cm ^−3 and $\mathrm{log}({\ell })=-{2.7}_{-0.2}^{+1.8}$ pc, tracing gas that is more reminiscent of H scii regions. We estimate a star formation (surface density) rate of Σ _SFR ∼ 0.6 M _⊙ yr ^−1 kpc ^−2 or SFR ∼ 50 M _⊙ yr ^−1 , consistent with a star-forming main-sequence galaxy of M _⋆ ∼ 10 ^11 M _⊙ . The discovery presented here opens up the possibility of studying ionized gas at high redshifts using RRL observations from current and future (e.g., SKA and ngVLA) radio facilities.

BackgroundThyroid nodules has become a significant public health issue worldwide with a rapidly increasing prevalence. However, its association with outdoor air pollution remains poorly understood. We aim to investigate the relationship between six outdoor air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO, and O3) and the risk of thyroid nodules.MethodsWe utilized a database including 4,920,536 participants who attended the annual physical examinations in the Meinian HealthCare Screening Center in 157 Chinese cities in 2017. City-specific concentrations of six pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO, and O3) from 2015 to 2017 were estimated based on the China’s National Urban Air Quality Real Time Publishing Platform. Thyroid nodule was measured with ultrasound. Multivariable Logistic regression was used to examine the associations between air pollutants and thyroid nodules with adjustment for age, sex, education, smoking, body mass index, fasting blood glucose, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, urine iodine, gross domestic product, and thyroid stimulating hormone. We conducted stratified analyses to investigate potential effect modification by sex, age, and urine iodine groups.ResultsApproximately 38% of the participants (1,869,742) were diagnosed with thyroid nodules. Each of the six air pollutants was significantly and linearly associated with the risk for thyroid nodules. The adjusted odds ratios [95% CI] for every increase of 10 μg/m3 for PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, and O3 were 1.062 [1.061, 1.064], 1.04 [1.03, 1.04], 1.10 [1.09, 1.10], 1.11 [1.11, 1.12], and 1.151 [1.149, 1.154], respectively; The odds ratio for each increase of 1 mg/m3 for CO was 1.50 [1.49 to 1.52]. Abstract Background Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication. Oxytocin (OXT), as a neuropeptide, plays a role in emotional and social behaviors. Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) supplementation led to an OXT-dependent behavioral improvement in ASD mouse models. Despite some promising results from animal studies, little is known about the efficacy of supplementation with L. reuteri, alone or with exogenous OXT therapy, on social-behavioral functions in ASD patients. This paper presents a protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial to evaluate the feasibility of conducting a full trial comparing oral supplementation of L. reuteri probiotics and intranasal OXT spray to placebo on the effect of social and behavioral functions in ASD patients. The study will also capture preliminary estimates of the efficacy of the proposed interventions in ASD patients. Methods This pilot trial is a two-staged, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study. Throughout the study (0–24 weeks), 60 patients with ASD will be randomly assigned to receive either oral L. reuteri probiotics or placebo. In the second study stage (13–24 weeks), all participants will receive intranasal OXT spray. As primary outcomes, serum OXT levels will be assayed and social behaviors will be assessed via the Autism Behavior Checklist and the Social Responsiveness Scale which are validated questionnaires, an objective emotional facial matching test, and a new video-based eye-tracking test. Secondary outcomes include the GI-severity-index and Bristol Stool Chart to assess GI function and gut microbiome/short-chain fatty acids. All the outcomes will be assessed at baseline and weeks 12 and 24. Discussion This pilot study will provide important information on the feasibility of recruitment, blinding and concealment, treatment administration, tolerability and adherence, specimen collection, outcome assessment, potential adverse effects, and the preliminary efficacy on both primary and secondary outcomes. If successful, this pilot study will inform a larger randomized controlled trial fully powered to examine the efficacies of oral L. reuteri probiotics and/or intranasal OXT spray on social-behavioral improvement in ASD patients. This study aimed to examine the prevalence and associated factors of lupus among adults in the United States. This study included 20,045 participants aged 17 years and older from the Third National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES III) from 1988 to 1994. Their lupus status was determined by survey questions in terms of a clinician's diagnosis. Demographics and laboratory test results of all participants were collected, including biochemistry, nutrition, and antibody biomarkers. Continuous variables were compared between cases with reported lupus and non-case controls by t-test, while the Chi-square test was used for categorical variables. Weighted multivariate-adjusted logistic regression models after adjustment of covariates were used to identify associated factors of lupus risk. Of 20,045 participants, 40 people who self-reported a lupus diagnosis were identified, giving a prevalence of 241 per 100,000 (n = 40; 95% confidence interval: 133–349 per 100,000). Many factors differed significantly between lupus cases and controls. Multivariate logistic regression analysis further identified previous and current smoking along with elevated serum levels of chloride, globulin, lactate dehydrogenase, uric acid, cholesterol, and lutein or zeaxanthin as risk factors; while protective factors against lupus included non-white race, obesity, elevated serum levels of bicarbonate, creatinine, total calcium, and vitamin B12, as well as elevated urinary albumin and iodine. Our nationwide data indicate that race, obesity, cigarette smoking, and certain biomarkers such as serum lutein or zeaxanthin, calcium, and cholesterol may be associated with the development or progression of lupus, although these findings need to be confirmed in further prospective investigations.

ObjectiveTo evaluate overall prevalence and trends of use of any supplements, multivitamins/multiminerals (MVMM), individual vitamins, minerals, and non-vitamin, non-mineral (NVNM) supplements among adults with diabetes in the USA.Research design and methodsWe used a nationally representative sample from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey collected between 1999 and 2014. Information on supplement use in the preceding 30 days was collected during interview over 8 continuous 2-year waves. To account for the complex sampling design, weighted analyses were conducted among 6688 US adults with diabetes aged 20–85 years and also stratified by age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, comorbidity status, and diabetes duration.ResultsOverall, the prevalence of any supplement use (52%–58%; P for trend=0.08) and that of any mineral use (47%–51%; P for trend=0.23) seemed stable over the years studied. Reported use of MVMM slightly decreased from 36% to 32% (P for trend=0.006). Use of any vitamin products significantly increased from 47% to 52% (P for trend=0.03). Use of some individual supplements, especially vitamin D, choline, lycopene, and fish oil supplements, significantly increased, while some vitamins, minerals and NVNM supplements decreased over the years. In addition, the trend of any supplement use varied by age, sex, race/ethnicity, or education, but not by diabetes duration or diabetic comorbidities.ConclusionsAmong US patients with diabetes, use of any dietary supplements or any minerals remained stable, while MVMM use slightly decreased and use of any vitamins increased. Additionally, use of several individual supplements varied significantly over the 16-year period studied.

Objective: The oral microbiota plays a key part in the initial colonization by pathogens and the chronic inflammatory reaction of the host. We measured variations in the salivary microbiota and evaluated their potential associations with periodontitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).Methods: We investigated the salivary microbiota of patients with COPD and periodontitis (n = 21) compared with that in patients with periodontitis alone (n = 36) and with healthy controls (HCs; n = 14), using pyrosequencing of polymerase chain reaction-amplified 16s rRNA genes.Results: Bacterial richness and diversity were significantly higher in patients suffering from COPD, and the bacterial family Lachnospiraceae was observed frequently only among patients with COPD and periodontitis. Veillonella, Rothia, Actinomyces, and Fusobacterium were the core bacterial genera that showed significant differences among patients with coincident COPD and periodontitis, patients with periodontitis alone, and HCs (p < 0.05). Veillonella, Rothia, and Actinomyces were observed much more frequently in patients with COPD and periodontitis, compared with that in HCs. All tested populations were divided into subgroups based on sex, smoking, or periodontitis index. In the subgroup with a bleeding index >2, Rothia was significantly different in periodontitis with and without COPD groups compared with HCs. In the subgroup with a plaque index >2.5, Rothia and Veillonella showed significant differences in periodontitis with and without COPD groups compared with HCs.Conclusion: Variations in salivary microbiota may be associated with COPD and periodontitis.

Organic carbon isotopic composition (δ13Corg) in loess deposits is an important indicator of terrestrial paleovegetation, and it has been widely used for paleoenvironmental reconstruction in aeolian sediments around the world. However, little research has been done on the variation and paleoenvironmental implication of δ13Corg from loess deposits on Shengshan Island, East China Sea, during the last glacial period (LG). In this research, we present optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages, total organic carbon (TOC) data and δ13Corg records of the loess section at Chenqianshan (CQS) on Shengshan Island. Additionally, to study the effectiveness of δ13Corg in documenting paleoenvironmental changes, magnetic susceptibilities and diffuse reflectance spectra were surveyed. TOC concentration for the CQS loess section ranged from 0.11% to 0.47%, and the δ13Corg composition of the CQS loess section varied between −20.80‰ and −24.56‰ during the LG. The average value of C4 abundance was 21.31%. TOC, δ13Corg, χfd, and Hm/(Hm + Gt) curves for the CQS loess section showed similar patterns. The results of our study indicated that the vegetation of the CQS loess deposit was mainly C3/C4 mixed vegetation, and C3 vegetation was the most important vegetation. The comparison between the δ13Corg curve for the CQS section and other existing δ13Corg records of the loess sections from central and northern China showed similar trends and their vegetation succession exhibited synchronous change during the LG. Based on a comparison of the δ13Corg record, C4 abundance and χfd of the CQS section and other global geological records, it was concluded that the mutual effects of precipitation and temperature caused the change of paleovegetation in loess deposits on islands in the East China Sea during the LG.

Abstract Current evidence about the association between pioglitazone and bladder cancer risk remains conflict. We aimed to assess the risk of bladder cancer associated with the use of pioglitazone and identify modifiers that affect the results. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from inception to 25 August 2016 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies that evaluated the association between pioglitazone and bladder cancer risk. Conventional and cumulative meta‐analyses were used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). A restricted spline regression analysis was used to examine the dose–response relationship with a generalized least‐squares trend test. We included two RCTs involving 9114 patients and 20 observational studies (n = 4,846,088 individuals). An increased risk of bladder cancer in patients treated with pioglitazone versus placebo was noted from RCTs (OR, 1.84; 95%CI, 0.99 to 3.42). In observational studies, the increased risk of bladder cancer was slight but significant among ever‐users of pioglitazone versus never‐users (OR, 1.13; 95%CI, 1.03 to 1.25), which appeared to be both time‐ (P = 0.003) and dose‐dependent (P = 0.05). In addition, we observed the association differed by region of studies (Europe, United States, or Asia) or source of funding (sponsored by industry or not). Current evidence suggests that pioglitazone may increase the risk of bladder cancer, possibly in a dose‐ and time‐dependent manner. Patients with long‐term and high‐dose exposure to pioglitazone should be monitored regularly for signs of bladder cancer.

The Yangtze Estuary is the largest estuary in the western Pacific Ocean, and harbors a high diversity of fish fauna. In this study, larval fish were surveyed monthly across three sections within the southern branch of the Yangtze Estuary (SBYE). A total of 49 taxa were collected, with 51.4% of the identified species being freshwater fishes. The collected numbers of larval taxa in the upper, middle, and lower sections were 22, 28, and 43, respectively. Species with differing salinity adaptations displayed different patterns along the direction of freshwater input. The collected numbers of larval taxa were 47 and 29 in the near-shore and mid-stream areas, respectively; and the abundances of larval fish in the near-shore areas tended to be higher than in the mid-stream areas in all the three sections. Larval fish occurred year-round with two peaks of abundance. Our results suggest that the freshwater input was the dominant factor shaping larval fish assemblage structure and dynamics within the SBYE. Influences of the Three Gorges Dam and South-to-North Water Transfer Project on larval fish assemblages within the SBYE should be considered with regard to conservation practices.

As surrogate readouts reflecting mitochondrial dysfunction, elevated levels of plasma acylcarnitines have been associated with cardiometabolic disorders, such as obesity, gestational diabetes, and type 2 diabetes. This study aimed to examine prospective associations of acylcarnitine profiles across gestation with neonatal anthropometry, including birthweight, birthweight z score, body length, sum of skinfolds, and sum of body circumferences. We quantified 28 acylcarnitines using electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry in plasma collected at gestational weeks 10–14, 15–26, 23–31, and 33–39 among 321 pregnant women from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Fetal Growth Studies-Singletons. A latent-class trajectory approach was applied to identify trajectories of acylcarnitines across gestation. We examined the associations of individual acylcarnitines and distinct trajectory groups with neonatal anthropometry using weighted generalized linear models adjusting for maternal age, race/ethnicity, education, parity, gestational age at blood collection, and pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI). We identified three distinct trajectory groups in C2, C3, and C4 and two trajectory groups in C5, C10, C5–DC, C8:1, C10:1, and C12, respectively. Women with nonlinear decreasing C12 levels across gestation (5.7%) had offspring with significantly lower birthweight (−475 g; 95% CI, −942, −6.79), birthweight z score (−0.39, −0.71, −0.06), and birth length (−1.38 cm, −2.49, −0.27) than those with persistently stable C12 levels (94.3%) (all nominal p value < 0.05). Women with consistently higher levels of C10 (6.1%) had offspring with thicker sum of skinfolds (4.91 mm, 0.85, 8.98) than did women with lower levels (93.9%) during pregnancy, whereas women with lower C10:1 levels (12.6%) had offspring with thicker sum of skinfolds (3.23 mm, 0.19, 6.27) than did women with abruptly increasing levels (87.4%) (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this study suggests that distinctive trajectories of C10, C10:1, and C12 acylcarnitine levels throughout pregnancy were significantly associated with neonatal anthropometry.

Objective: Prolactin and progesterone are implicated in glucose homeostasis in and outside of pregnancy. However, their associations with gestational diabetes (GDM) risk were not well-understood. This study investigates this question in a prospective and longitudinal cohort.Methods: This is a nested case-control study of 107 incident GDM cases and 214 matched non-GDM controls within the NICHD Fetal Growth Studies-Singleton Cohort. Blood samples were collected at gestational weeks 10–14, 15–26, 23–31, and 33–39. The odds ratios (OR) of GDM were estimated using conditional logistic regression. The longitudinal changes in prolactin and progesterone were estimated using linear mixed-effects models.Results: Compared to controls, cases have significantly higher prolactin levels at weeks 10–14 (median: 50.4 vs. 42.1 ng/mL), and significantly lower progesterone levels at weeks 10–14 (median: 109.4 vs. 126.5 nmol/L). Prolactin levels at weeks 10–14 were significantly and positively associated with GDM risk; the adjusted ORs across increasing quartiles were 1.00, 1.13, 1.80, 2.33 (p-trend = 0.02). A similar but slightly attenuated association was observed at weeks 15–26 (p-trend = 0.05). Progesterone was not associated with GDM risk at either time points. Longitudinal changes in prolactin and progesterone between the first two visits were not associated with GDM risk. In addition, prolactin was significantly and positively associated with insulin and C-peptide levels at weeks 10–14, and significantly and inversely associated with C-peptide levels at weeks 15–26; progesterone was significantly and inversely associated with glucose and insulin levels.Conclusions: This study provided the first prospective evidence of a positive association between prolactin levels in early pregnancy and GDM risk.

Abstract Background Multiple genetic and environmental factors contribute to the individual‐level heterogeneity in stroke. This study aimed to assess how the genetic interactions confer risk of stroke. Methods In a Chinese case‐control study including 1,405 strokes and 1,263 controls who were followed up (range, 0.1–6.0 years), eight genes, including apolipoprotein(a) (APOA1), methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), vitamin K epoxide reductase complex subunit 1 (VKORC1), arachidonate 5‐lipoxygenase‐activating protein (ALOX5AP), NOTCH3, chromosome 9p21.3(Chr.9p21.3), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGFA), and kinase insert domain‐containing receptor (KDR), were analyzed for interactions by the generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction method and validated by the multivariate logistic regression models. The genetic associations with carotid artery intima‐media thickness (IMT) were examined. Results The interaction of VKORC1 and Chr.9p21.3 was identified for stroke and its worse prognosis, and subjects having the VKORC1 rs2359612C and Chr.9p21.3 rs10757274G alleles had higher risks for stroke (OR = 1.83, 95% CI = 1.32–2.52) as well as for stroke recurrence (HR = 1.84, 95% CI = 1.24–2.73), cardiovascular events (HR = 1.65, 95% CI = 1.15–2.38), and cardiovascular mortality (HR = 2.16, 95% CI = 1.24–3.79). Supporting, they were associated with higher IMT. Hypertension or physical inactivity increased the risk effect. The interaction of VEGFA rs833061C and KDR rs2305948T was identified for hemorrhagic stroke. Conclusions Our findings identified two novel genetic interactions of VKORC1 and Chr.9p21.3 and of VEGFA and KDR for risk of stroke and subtypes as well as future stroke prognosis.

Background Recent evidence suggests that racial/ethnic differences in circulating levels of free or bioavailable 25‐hydroxy vitamin D (25[OH]D) rather than total 25(OH)D may explain apparent racial disparities in cardiovascular disease (CVD). We prospectively examined black‐white differences in the associations of total, free, and bioavailable 25(OH)D, vitamin D–binding protein, and parathyroid hormone levels at baseline with incident CVD (including nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, and CVD death) in postmenopausal women. Methods and Results We conducted a case‐cohort study among 79 705 postmenopausal women, aged 50 to 79 years, who were free of CVD at baseline in the WHI‐OS (Women's Health Initiative Observational Study). A subcohort of 1300 black and 1500 white participants were randomly chosen as controls; a total of 550 black and 1500 white women who developed incident CVD during a mean follow‐up of 11 years were chosen as cases. We directly measured total 25(OH)D, vitamin D–binding protein, albumin, parathyroid hormone, and calculated free and bioavailable 25(OH)D. Weighted Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine their associations with CVD risk. Although vitamin D–binding protein and total, free, and bioavailable 25(OH)D were not significantly associated with CVD risk in black or white women, a significant positive association between parathyroid hormone and CVD risk persisted in white women (hazard ratio comparing the highest quartile with the lowest, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.06–1.77) but not in black women (hazard ratio comparing the highest quartile with the lowest, 1.12; 95% CI, 0.79–1.58), independent of total, free, and bioavailable 25(OH)D or vitamin D–binding protein. Conclusions Circulating levels of vitamin D biomarkers are not related to CVD risk in either white or black women. Higher parathyroid hormone levels may be an independent risk factor for CVD in white women.

This paper presents the first results from draw-a-scientist tests (DASTs) over five years that were used to measure the effect of 8–10 week long astronomy clubs and week long summer camps on 3 rd–5 th grade elementary school students’ perceptions of scientists. We facilitated these DASTs prior to these clubs or camps, which provide a baseline for a student’s initial conception of scientists, and once at the end, to determine whether their conception changed, possibly as a result of their involvement. In total we analyze 89 pairs of DASTs using a numerical grading scheme designed to quantify the presence of various features in the drawn scientist and their activities. We find that there is a gender imbalance in both the pre- and postclub drawings, with only 32% and 35%, respectively, of students drawing female scientists. We also find that a third to a half of the scientists have a stereotypical appearance and/or are performing stereotypical activities. Although we find insignificant changes (

Aims. Emerging evidence has suggested a mechanistic link from vitamin D metabolism to glucose and insulin homeostasis. This study is aimed at specifically quantifying the direct effects of vitamin D supplementation on indexes of glucose and insulin homeostasis as well as incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) among nondiabetic adults. Methods. We systematically searched randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of vitamin D supplementation in nondiabetic adults in PubMed, EMBASE, and CENTRAL. Random-effects meta-analysis was conducted to pool the estimates. Results. Our meta-analysis included 47 RCTs involving 44,161 nondiabetic individuals with a median trial duration of 4 months and a median dose of 4000 IU/d. Vitamin D supplementation significantly reduced fasting glucose by 0.11 mmol/L, fasting insulin by 1.47 mIU/L, and HOMA-IR by 0.32 while increasing total 25 (OH) D levels by 40.14 nmol/L. We found no significant effects of vitamin D supplementation on insulin secretion or beta cell function indexes. Based on the data from six trials involving 39,633 participants and 2533 incident T2D cases, vitamin D supplementation was not associated with the risk of incident diabetes compared to placebo (pooled relative risk: 1.01, 95% confidence interval: 0.93 to 1.08). Conclusions. Our meta-analysis found that vitamin D supplementation might improve glucose and insulin metabolism without affecting the risk of T2D among nondiabetic adults.

Background. The associations of diabetes and obesity with the risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) are inconclusive in previous studies. Subjects/Methods. We conducted prospective analysis in the Physicians’ Health Study. Among 25,554 male physicians aged ≥ 50 years who reported no AAA at baseline, 471 reported a newly diagnosed AAA during a mean of 10.4 years’ follow-up. Results. Compared with men who had baseline body mass index (BMI) < 25 kg/m2, the multivariable hazard ratio (HR [95% CI]) of newly diagnosed AAA was 1.30 [1.06–1.59] for BMI 25–2 years’ follow-up, resp.). Conclusion. In a large cohort of middle-aged and older men, obesity was associated with a higher risk, while history of diabetes tended to associate with a lower risk of diagnosed AAA, particularly over longer follow-up.

A number of recent genome-wide association (GWA) studies have identified several novel genetic determinants of plasma lipid and lipoprotein concentrations in European populations. However, it is still unclear whether these loci identified in Caucasian GWA studies also exert the same effect on lipid and lipoprotein concentrations in a Chinese population. We genotyped 10 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in nine loci in a Chinese Han population sample (n = 4,192) and assessed the associations of these SNPs with metabolic traits, using linear regression adjusted for age, gender, diabetes status, and body mass index. Three variants (rs12654264, P ∼ 1.7 × 10−6; rs3764261, P ∼ 7.1 × 10−7; and rs4420638, P ∼ 1.1 × 10−3) showed strong evidence for association with total cholesterol; four variants (rs780094, P ∼ 1.8 × 10−11; rs17145738, P ∼ 5.0 × 10−7; rs326, P ∼ 2.3 × 10−6; and rs439401, P ∼ 2.2 × 10−5) showed strong evidence for association with triglycerides, four variants (rs17145738, P ∼ 1.9 × 10−4; rs326, P ∼ 9.7 × 10−4; rs1800588, P ∼ 1.5 × 10−7; and rs3764261, P ∼ 4.3 × 10−14) showed strong evidence for association with HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), two variants (rs12654264, P ∼ 2.3 × 10−5; and rs4420638, P ∼ 3.6 × 10−4) showed strong evidence for association with LDL-C, and four variants (rs326, P ∼ 2.8 × 10−3; rs1800588, P ∼ 6.1 × 10−4; rs3764261, P ∼ 2.0 × 10−3; and rs4420638, P ∼ 9.4 × 10−5) showed strong evidence for association with total cholesterol-HDL-C-related ratio. These SNPs generated strong combined effects on lipid traits and dyslipidemia. Our findings indicate that the variants that associated with metabolic traits in Europeans may also play a role in a Chinese Han population.

China has the largest number of people with diabetes in the world. Over the last 30 years China has experienced rapid economic growth and a growing income gap between rich and poor. The population is ageing, however diabetes in older people has not been well studied to date. In this study we determined incidence and predictors of diabetes in older Chinese people.During 2001, using a standard interview method, we examined 1,317 adults aged ≥65 years who did not have diabetes in the city of Hefei, and characterized baseline risk factors. Over 7.5 years of follow up, we documented incident diabetes using self-reported doctor diagnosis and the cause of death in the whole cohort, and HbA(1C) ≥48 mmol/mol in a nested case-control sample. A multivariate Cox regression model was employed to investigate risk of diabetes in relation to baseline risk factors.During follow up, 119 persons had newly diagnosed diabetes. World age-standardised incidence of diabetes was 24.5 (95% CI 19.5-29.5) per 1,000 person-years. Risk of diabetes was significantly and positively associated with income, waist circumference and body mass index, smoking and uncontrolled hypertension, but negatively associated with having a hobby of walking and frequency of visiting children/other relatives and contacting neighbours/friends. Higher income was significantly associated with increased diabetes risk regardless of cardiovascular and psychosocial risk factors. Compared to those with middle income and no psychosocial risk factors, the hazard ratio for incident diabetes among participants with high income and psychosocial risk was 2.13 (95% CI 1.02-4.45).Increasing incidence of diabetes in relation to high income has become an important public health issue in China. Maintaining social networks and gentle physical activities and reducing psychosocial factors may be integrated into current multi-faceted preventive strategies for curbing the epidemic of diabetes in the older population.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between dietary glycemic index, glycemic load and risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and stroke-related mortality is inconsistent. METHODS: We systematically searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Science Citation Index Expanded databases using glycemic index, glycemic load, and cardiovascular disease and reference lists of retrieved articles up to April 30, 2012. We included prospective studies with glycemic index and glycemic load as the exposure and incidence of fatal and nonfatal CHD, stroke, and stroke-related mortality as the outcome variable. Pooled relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using random-effects models. RESULTS: Fifteen prospective studies with a total of 438,073 participants and 9,424 CHD cases, 2,123 stroke cases, and 342 deaths from stroke were included in the meta-analysis. Gender significantly modified the effects of glycemic index and glycemic load on CHD risk, and high glycemic load level was associated with higher risk of CHD in women (RR=1.49, 95%CI 1.27-1.73), but not in men (RR=1.08, 95%CI 0.91-1.27). Stratified meta-analysis by body mass index indicated that among overweight and obese subjects, dietary glycemic load level were associated with increased risk of CHD (RR=1.49, 95%CI 1.27-1.76; P for interaction=0.003). Higher dietary glycemic load, but not glycemic index, was positively associated with stroke (RR=1.19, 95% CI 1.00-1.43). There is a linear dose-response relationship between dietary glycemic load and increased risk of CHD, with pooled RR of 1.05 (95%CI 1.02-1.08) per 50-unit increment in glycemic load level. CONCLUSION: High dietary glycemic load is associated with a higher risk of CHD and stroke, and there is a linear dose-response relationship between glycemic load and CHD risk. Dietary glycemic index is slightly associated with risk of CHD, but not with stroke and stroke-related death. Further studies are needed to verify the effects of gender and body weight on cardiovascular diseases.

Traffic safety is related closely with driver’s physiological and psychological characteristics. And the influence on traffic safety is represented as driver’s propensity. Evidence theory is introduced to the evaluation system of driver’s propensity in this paper, and it is utilized to combine the expert opinions, which can eliminate unavoidable uncertain elements in the traditional appraisal methods. The appraisal problems of subjective index can also be resolved by this method in the appraisal system. Results show that the method is objective and reasonable, and driver’s propensity can be evaluated effectively.

BackgroundThe FTO gene harbors the strongest known susceptibility locus for obesity. While many individual studies have suggested that physical activity (PA) may attenuate the effect of FTO on obesity risk, other studies have not been able to confirm this interaction. To confirm or refute unambiguously whether PA attenuates the association of FTO with obesity risk, we meta-analyzed data from 45 studies of adults (n = 218,166) and nine studies of children and adolescents (n = 19,268).Methods and findingsAll studies identified to have data on the FTO rs9939609 variant (or any proxy [r(2)>0.8]) and PA were invited to participate, regardless of ethnicity or age of the participants. PA was standardized by categorizing it into a dichotomous variable (physically inactive versus active) in each study. Overall, 25% of adults and 13% of children were categorized as inactive. Interaction analyses were performed within each study by including the FTO×PA interaction term in an additive model, adjusting for age and sex. Subsequently, random effects meta-analysis was used to pool the interaction terms. In adults, the minor (A-) allele of rs9939609 increased the odds of obesity by 1.23-fold/allele (95% CI 1.20-1.26), but PA attenuated this effect (p(interaction) = 0.001). More specifically, the minor allele of rs9939609 increased the odds of obesity less in the physically active group (odds ratio = 1.22/allele, 95% CI 1.19-1.25) than in the inactive group (odds ratio = 1.30/allele, 95% CI 1.24-1.36). No such interaction was found in children and adolescents.ConclusionsThe association of the FTO risk allele with the odds of obesity is attenuated by 27% in physically active adults, highlighting the importance of PA in particular in those genetically predisposed to obesity.

Objective: Most previous studies investigated the associations between intake of individual nutrients and risk of disease, which failed to consider the potential interactions and correlations between various nutrients contained in food. Although dietary quality scores provide a comprehensive evaluation of the entire diet, it remains elusive whether they are associated with the risk of pancreatic cancer. Methods: Dietary intake data collected with the Dietary Questionnaire (DQX) and Diet History Questionnaire (DHQ) were used to calculate HEI-2015 and DQI-R scores for participants in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial. A high score indicates an increased intake of adequacy components and a decreased intake of moderation components. This study included 252 cases of pancreatic cancer documented from 58,477 persons during a median follow-up of 12.2years in the DQX cohort and 372 cases of pancreatic cancer ascertained from 101,721 persons during a median follow-up of 8.9years in the DHQ cohort. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was performed to calculate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the associations between the two dietary quality scores and pancreatic cancer risk. Results: After adjustment for confounders, HEI-2015 and DQI-R scores were not significantly associated with pancreatic cancer risk. However, a significantly lower risk was observed for overweight persons with a higher HEI-2015 score in the DQX cohort (HR [95% CI] comparing the highest with lowest tertile: 0.52 [0.32, 0.85], p for trend = 0.009) and those with higher scores of some individual components. Conclusion: Collectively, overall dietary quality is not associated with an altered risk of pancreatic cancer in this US population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
