Abstract Background The causal relationships between sexually transmitted infections, depression, and self-harm remain unclear. Methods We executed various Mendelian Randomization (MR) analyses. At the same time, a cross-sectional analysis from NHANES was used for verification and an enrichment analysis was also utilized to explore the potential common gene functions. Results We found that STIs may have a potential causal effect on depression (P = 0.002) and self-harm (P = 0.003). Conversely, self-harm has been identified as a risk factor for the acquisition of STIs (P = 0.006), while there is no evidence to support an effect of depression on STIs. Furthermore, mediation MR indicated that monocyte absolute count played a mediating role in the association between STIs and depression, accounting for 7.7%. And then, the weighted regression analysis of the cross-sectional analysis demonstrated a significant association between one of the common STIs, HPV, and depression. Gene enrichment analysis suggested that the PI3K-Akt signalling pathway and the infectious virus signalling pathway may represent a common underlying pathogenesis. Conclusion STIs may increase the risk of depression and self-harm, while self-harm might also represent a risk factor for STIs, which could provide insights and a foundation for the control of STIs and mental health monitoring in clinical practice.

Abstract Background Glechoma longituba, recognized as a medicinal plant, provides valuable pharmaceutical raw materials for treating various diseases. Saline-alkali stress may effectively enhance the medicinal quality of G. longituba by promoting the synthesis of secondary metabolites. To investigate the changes in the primary medicinal components of G. longituba under saline-alkali stress and improve the quality of medicinal materials, Na2CO3 was applied to induce short-term stress under different conditions and the biomass, physiologically active substances and primary medicinal components of G. longituba were measured in this study. Results Under alkaline salt stress, the activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were elevated in G. longituba, accompanied by increased accumulation of proline (Pro) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Furthermore, analysis of the medicinal constituents revealed that G. longituba produced the highest levels of soluble sugars, flavonoids, ursolic acid, and oleanolic acid under 0.6% Na2CO3 stress for 48 h, 0.2% Na2CO3 stress for 72 h, 0.4% Na2CO3 stress for 12 h, and 0.4% Na2CO3 stress for 8 h, respectively. Conclusions Short-term Na2CO3 stress enhances the synthesis of medicinal components in G. longituba. By manipulating stress conditions, the production of various medicinal substances could be optimized. This approach may serve as a basis for the targeted cultivation of G. longituba, offering potential applications in the treatment of diverse diseases.

As the complexity of Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) satellite tasks and their performance requirements increase, higher demands are placed on satellites’ ability to track mission trajectories, including their accuracy, speed, and capacity to resist external disturbances during operation. This paper proposes an anti-disturbance prescribed performance control scheme for LEO satellites. The scheme establishes a unified framework to accommodate the high-performance requirements of satellite observation, while also incorporating a disturbance observer within this framework to counteract unknown external disturbances. Unlike existing trajectory tracking control methods, the proposed control scheme allows for the flexible selection of performance functions to adapt to diverse satellite performance demands. By focusing on the distance between tracking errors and the performance function, this approach avoids the performance boundary issues faced by traditional prescribed performance control, thus preventing excessive energy consumption by the LEO satellite. Additionally, within the proposed control framework, a disturbance observer is implemented to provide real-time compensation for unknown disturbances while ensuring minimal control input usage for disturbance rejection. Our experimental results show that the proposed control scheme achieves consistent performance for the LEO satellite and successfully accomplishes mission trajectory tracking, even in the presence of unknown disturbances.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the digestive system. They usually occur in the gastrointestinal tract. However, we discovered a rare phenomenon in which small cell carcinoma infiltrated the GIST of a patient. The patient came to the hospital and presented with chest tightness and shortness of breath for 2 months and a dry cough for half a month. As the ancillary tests were refined, it was discovered that he also had a lesion in the pelvic cavity. After pathological examination of the core needle biopsy (CNB) samples from the pelvic cavity lesion, the patient was diagnosed with GIST with small cell carcinoma infiltration. The patient is currently receiving a chemotherapy regimen of etoposide combined with cisplatin.

This research proposes an innovative, intelligent hand-assisted diagnostic system aiming to achieve a comprehensive assessment of hand function through information fusion technology. Based on the single-vision algorithm we designed, the system can perceive and analyze the morphology and motion posture of the patient’s hands in real time. This visual perception can provide an objective data foundation and capture the continuous changes in the patient’s hand movement, thereby providing more detailed information for the assessment and providing a scientific basis for subsequent treatment plans. By introducing medical knowledge graph technology, the system integrates and analyzes medical knowledge information and combines it with a voice question-answering system, allowing patients to communicate and obtain information effectively even with limited hand function. Voice question-answering, as a subjective and convenient interaction method, greatly improves the interactivity and communication efficiency between patients and the system. In conclusion, this system holds immense potential as a highly efficient and accurate hand-assisted assessment tool, delivering enhanced diagnostic services and rehabilitation support for patients.

Abstract The multispectral compatible infrared camouflage technology is implemented these days to counter the developing infrared detectors and detectors of other bands. However, the conflict between delicate optical structures and scalable procedures has significantly impeded the development and application of multispectral‐compatible camouflage technology. Therefore, a semi‐open Fabry‐Perot structure is introduced, and the color and infrared emissivity by structural parameters for color‐matched visible‐infrared compatible camouflage are modulated. The prepared compatible camouflage film exhibits visible camouflage by the minimum color difference of 1.6 L*a*b* (under desert background) and infrared camouflage by low emission (ε3–5 µm ≈ 0.17 and ε8–14 µm ≈ 0.143). Due to its flexibility and scalability, the compatible camouflage film can be applied in practical applications and exhibits desirable visible and infrared camouflage performance in different battlefield backgrounds.

Soft robotic gloves have attracted significant interest in hand rehabilitation in the past decade. However, current solutions are still heavy and lack finger-state monitoring and versatile treatment options. To address this, we present a lightweight soft robotic glove actuated by twisted string actuators (TSA) that provides whole-hand finger motion tracking. We have developed a virtual reality environment for hand rehabilitation training, allowing users to interact with various virtual objects. Fifteen small inertial measurement units are placed on the glove to predict finger joint angles and track whole-hand finger motion. We performed TSA experiments to identify design and control rules, by understanding how their response varies with input load and voltages. Grasping experiments were conducted to determine the grasping force and range of motion. Finally, we showcase an application of the rehabilitation glove in a Unity-based VR interface, which can actuate the operator’s fingers to grasp different virtual objects.

The CRISPR/Cas systems in prokaryotes such as bacteria and archaea are the adaptive immune system to prevent infection from viruses, phages, or other foreign substances. When viruses or phages first invade the bacteria, Cas proteins recognize and cut the DNA from viruses or phages into short fragments that will be integrated into the CRISPR array. Once bacteria are invaded again, the modified CRISPR and Cas proteins react quickly to cut DNA at the specified target location, protecting the host. Due to its high efficiency, versatility, and simplicity, the CRISPR/Cas system has become one of the most popular gene editing technologies. In this review, we briefly introduce the CRISPR/Cas systems, focus on several delivery methods including physical delivery, viral vector delivery, and non-viral vector delivery, and the applications of disease therapy. Finally, some problems in CRISPR/Cas9 technology have been proposed, such as the off-target effects, the efficiency of DNA repair mechanisms, and delivery of CRISPR/Cas system safely and efficiently to the target location.

Within the last decade, soft robotics has attracted an increasing attention from both academia and industry. Although multiple literature reviews of the whole soft robotics field have been conducted, there still appears to be a lack of systematic investigation of the intellectual structure and evolution of this field considering the increasing amount of publications. This paper conducts a scientometric review of the progressively synthesized network derived from 10,504 bibliographic records using a topic search on soft robotics from 2010 to 2021 based on the Web of Science (WoS) core database. The results are presented from both the general data analysis of included papers (e.g., relevant journals, citation, h-index, year, institution, country, disciplines) and the specific data analysis corresponding to main disciplines and topics, and more importantly, emerging trends. CiteSpace, a data visualization software, which can construct the co-citation network maps and provide citation bursts, is used to explore the intellectual structures and emerging trends of the soft robotics field. In addition, this paper offers a demonstration of an effective analytical method for evaluating enormous publication citation and co-citation data. Findings of this review can be used as a reference for future research in soft robotics and relevant topics.

Promoting carbon emissions of the transportation industry to reach the peak as soon as possible is an effective way to control carbon emissions in China. Combined with the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) model and the Tapio decoupling model, this paper tries to predict and analyze the time, path, and quality of carbon peaking in the transportation industry in China and its eastern, central, and western regions. The research shows the following: 1) Under the “benchmark scenario,” the transportation industry in China and its three regions will not achieve the international commitment of achieving peak carbon emissions by 2030. 2) Under the “radical scenario,” the peak time of China’s transportation industry can be reached in 2027, which is 5 years earlier, 10% peak value lower than that in the “benchmark scenario.” In that scenario, in transportation industry, the eastern region will reach the carbon peak in 2025 and the central and western regions will both reach the carbon peak in 2028. By then, the peak quality of carbon emissions will be better than that under the “benchmark scenario” in transportation industry. This paper can provide theoretical support for promoting carbon emission reductions and carbon peaking in China’s transportation industry.

Many diseases, such as stroke, arthritis, and spinal cord injury, can cause severe hand impairment. Treatment options for these patients are limited by expensive hand rehabilitation devices and dull treatment procedures. In this study, we present an inexpensive soft robotic glove for hand rehabilitation in virtual reality (VR). Fifteen inertial measurement units are placed on the glove for finger motion tracking, and a motor—tendon actuation system is mounted onto the arm and exerts forces on fingertips via finger-anchoring points, providing force feedback to fingers so that the users can feel the force of a virtual object. A static threshold correction and complementary filter are used to calculate the finger attitude angles, hence computing the postures of five fingers simultaneously. Both static and dynamic tests are performed to validate the accuracy of the finger-motion-tracking algorithm. A field-oriented-control-based angular closed-loop torque control algorithm is adopted to control the force applied to the fingers. It is found that each motor can provide a maximum force of 3.14 N within the tested current limit. Finally, we present an application of the haptic glove in a Unity-based VR interface to provide the operator with haptic feedback while squeezing a soft virtual ball.

Background: The wide availability of flavored e-cigarettes and broad use of e-cigarettes in public places may contribute to the rapidly increasing rates of use among youth and young adults in the U.S. However, policies at the federal, state and local levels can address these factors. Objective: Assess public support for 5 e-cigarette-related policies and evaluate response patterns by demographics, tobacco use, e-cigarette harm perceptions, geographic region, and strength of state-level clean indoor air policies. Methods: Data were collected Oct-Dec 2018 from a nationally representative online panel of U.S. adults (n = 3211). We measured support for 5 policies: (1) a ban on the sale flavored e-cigarettes; (2) requiring tobacco products, like e-cigarettes, be kept out of view in stores where adolescents shop; and prohibiting e-cigarette use in (3) all public places; (4) restaurants; and (5) bars. Weighted, adjusted logistic regressions modeled variation in policy support. Results: A majority of respondents (63.3%) supported a flavor ban, with no differences in support by smoking status. Most respondents supported keeping tobacco products out of view (78.0%) and prohibiting e-cigarette use in indoor public places (82.9%), restaurants (86.5%), and bars (76.1%). In the adjusted models, current e-cigarette users had significantly lower odds of policy support compared to never users. We observed no differences in support by geographic region or strength of state-level clean indoor air policies. Conclusion: Results suggest high levels of public support to regulate e-cigarette flavors, marketing, and use in public places. Targeted messaging may be needed to increase support among current e-cigarette users.

Recently, the AC/DC hybrid distribution network has become a general trend in energy research. To accommodate the addition of renewable energy, this paper proposes a reliability assessment approach for AC/DC hybrid distribution network considering the new features introduced by the DC distribution technique. First, the probability models of renewable generations and loads are established. Second, the control modes of the voltage source converter (VSC) yielding to different fault scenarios are modeled based on its operating characteristics. Thereafter, an optimal load shedding model that considers the control modes of the VSC is developed, and it can be solved using a second-order cone algorithm. Finally, a reliability assessment method for the AC/DC hybrid distribution network is proposed that is based on the nonsequential Monte Carlo method. Case studies based on a modified AC/DC distribution network are applied to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The operational characteristics and reliability performance of the AC/DC distribution network with high integration of renewable energy are demonstrated by comparing it to a corresponding AC distribution network.

PM _2.5 emissions from the transportation sector are a source of haze pollution in China, to which, however, less attention is paid by society. The decoupling relationships between PM _2.5 emissions and economic growth from the transportation sector in the eastern, central, and western regions of China from 2010 to 2017 are analyzed by using the Tapio decoupling model. On this basis, in the transportation sector, socioeconomic factors influencing PM _2.5 emissions and effective means of controlling PM _2.5 emissions are studied by using a logarithmic mean Divisia index model. The results indicate that: (a) in China’s transportation sector, the decoupling relationships of the two aspects in the eastern, central, and western regions show an N-shaped trend, that is, the rate of change in PM _2.5 emissions from the transportation sector gradually exceeds that of economic development. The strong decoupling changes into an expansive coupling in the eastern and central regions, while the strong decoupling becomes an expansive negative decoupling in the western region. (b) Economic growth and population growth mainly contribute to the increase of PM _2.5 emissions. Improvements of the energy structure and a decrease in transport intensity are the main factors driving a reduction in PM _2.5 emissions. (c) Due to regional differences in the ‘rebound effect’ and ‘technological effect’, technological progress has increased PM _2.5 emissions from the transportation sector in the central region, while reduced such emissions in the eastern and western regions. This research provides targeted policy reference for regional governance of PM _2.5 emissions from the transportation sector.

A series of materials used for oil absorption based on cellulose fiber grafted with butyl acrylate (BuAc) have been prepared by radical polymerization under ultrasonic waves processing. Effects of ultrasonic dose for the maximum graft yield were considered. The dependency of optimum conditions for oil absorption rate on parameters such as ultrasonic processing time and ultrasonic power were also determined. Fourier infrared (FT-IR) analysis was used to confirm the chemical reaction taking place between cellulose and butyl acrylate. The thermogravimetric behavior of the graft copolymer was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was used to determine the surface structure of the grafted material. With the increase of the ultrasonic treatment dose, the surface of the ultrasonic processed material became more regular, and the material was transformed into a homogeneous network polymer having a good structure and good adsorbing ability.

Biallelic variants in the NSUN2 gene cause a rare intellectual disability and female infertility in humans. However, the function and mechanism of NSUN2 during mouse oocyte meiotic maturation and early embryonic development are unknown. Here, we show that NSUN2 is important for mouse oocyte meiotic maturation and early embryonic development. Specifically, NSUN2 is required for ovarian development and oocyte meiosis, and deletion of Nsun2 reduces oocyte maturation and increases the rates of misaligned chromosomes and aberrant spindles. In addition, Nsun2 deficiency results in a low blastocyst rate and impaired blastocyst quality. Strikingly, loss of Nsun2 leads to approximately 35% of embryos being blocked at the 2-cell stage, and Nsun2 knockdown impairs zygotic genome activation at the 2-cell stage. Taken together, these findings suggest that NSUN2 plays a critical role in mouse oocyte meiotic maturation and early embryonic development, and provide key resources for elucidating female infertility with NSUN2 mutations.
