The Satoyama Initiative is endorsed by the decision of the Tenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 10) in 2010. It is a global effort with the vision to “realize societies in harmony with nature” through promotion and conservation of “socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes” (SEPLS). The International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) is a partnership of organizations created in 2010 to further its implementation. The IPSI promulgates the SEPLS concept that adopts a holistic landscape and seascape approach involving multi-sectoral stakeholders who use the landscape and seascape for its multi-functional nature. The SEPLS concept, if well implemented for biodiversity conservation through sustainable use, can enhance nature’s contributions to people, thereby also enriching livelihoods and human well-being. Landscape and seascape management has to satisfy the three pillars of sustainable development— environmental, social and economic sustainability—to ensure both the well-being of the planet and humans for a sustainable future. Biodiversity is critical to the stability of our natural capital, which forms the basis of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set in 2015 by the United Nations Agenda 2030 to eradicate poverty and achieve sustainable development by 2030 worldwide, ensuring that no one is left behind. Yet global biodiversity is in crisis. Responding to the urgent global call to take collective action for transformative change, the mainstreaming of biodiversity into related sectors including agriculture, forestry, fisheries, tourism, health, energy and mining, infrastructure, manufacturing and processing, is important to garner sustainable interventions and strategies using nature-based solutions. IPSI, through implementing integrated landscape and seascape approaches by applying SEPLS concepts, can bring about this transformative change and contribute to the next decade of biodiversity conservation to be set out by the CBD post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

In this volume, we seek to contribute to the understanding of how different kinds of values, which have been called “multiple values of nature” (we will use the initialism “MVN” for the purposes of this volume), are provided and maintained through sustainable use of biodiversity in socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS). The volume thus contributes to the pool of knowledge that will be relevant for anongoing 'Methodological assessment regarding the diverse conceptualization of multiple values of nature and its contributions, including biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services' by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), hereinafter referred to as the 'Values Assessment'. This chapter provides a synthesis of thecase studies presented in the following 11 chapters that demonstrate how integrated and holistic approaches to SEPLS management can provide intrinsic, instrumental, and relational values to bring about economic, social/cultural and ecological sustainability for both biodiversity and people.

The paper compares the agricultural heritage conservation schemes of China, Japan and Korea and, in particular, the national programs and their implementation under Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)'s Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). This comparison allows an understanding of the background of developments, designation criteria, application procedures and implementation structures of GIAHS and of the respective domestic programs in terms of the differences in national circumstances of Japan, China and South Korea. The sequence of implementation of GIAHS and the national program differs in each of the three countries. China introduced a national program after GIAHS designation, Japan has GIAHS but no national program, and Korea implemented a national program before its GIAHS designation. In this volume, we seek to highlight how the sustainable use of biodiversity as practiced in well-managed SEPLS can contribute to effective area-based conservation of biodiversity. The concept of SEPLS includes the idea that integrated and holistic management approaches can have mutual benefits for biodiversity and livelihoods, sustainably conserving biodiversity while providing humans with adequate ecosystem services. The case studies included here give examples of how such approaches on the ground can contribute to the goals of the global conservation agenda, especially in relation to the CBD’s Aichi Biodiversity Target 11, which contains the concept of ”effectively and equitably managed, ecologically representative and well-connected systems of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures” and their integration into the wider landscape and seascape.
