Background: Alcohol-related brain degeneration (ARBD) is associated with cognitive–motor impairments that can progress to disability and dementia. White matter (WM) is prominently targeted in ARBD due to chronic neurotoxic and degenerative effects on oligodendrocytes and myelin. Early detection and monitoring of WM pathology in ARBD could lead to therapeutic interventions. Objective: This study examines the potential utility of a non-invasive strategy for detecting WM ARBD using exosomes isolated from serum. Comparative analyses were made with paired tissue (Tx) and membrane vesicles (MVs) from the temporal lobe (TL). Methods: Long Evans rats were fed for 8 weeks with isocaloric liquid diets containing 37% or 0% caloric ethanol (n = 8/group). TL-Tx, TL-MVs, and serum exosomes (S-EVs) were used to examine ethanol’s effects on oligodendrocyte glycoprotein, astrocyte, and oxidative stress markers. Results: Ethanol significantly decreased the TL-Tx expression of platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRA), 2′,3′-cyclic nucleotide 3′ phosphodiesterase (CNPase), proteolipid protein (PLP), myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and 8-OHdG, whereas in the TL-MVs, ethanol increased CNPase, PDGFRA, and 8-OHdG, but decreased MOG and GFAP concordantly with TL-Tx. Ethanol modulated the S-EV expression by reducing PLP, nestin, GFAP, and 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE). Conclusion: Chronic ethanol exposures differentially alter the expression of oligodendrocyte/myelin, astrocyte, and oxidative stress markers in the brain, brain MVs, and S-EVs. However, directionally concordant effects across all three compartments were limited. Future studies should advance these efforts by characterizing the relationship between ABRD and molecular pathological changes in brain WM-specific exosomes in serum.

Ten lettuce varieties (lines) grown in Chengdu Plain were used as test materials, and 8 post-harvest appearance quality indexes (single plant weight, single plant stem weight, single plant length, stem length, stem thickness, stem skin hardness, stem flesh hardness, and stem edible rate), as well as 7 nutrient quality indexes (water content, chlorophyll, vitamin C, reducing sugars, soluble proteins, cellulose, and free amino acids) were tested and statistically analyzed. The aim of this study was to compare and evaluate the postharvest quality of the tested varieties and select the excellent varieties. The results showed that the values of coefficient of variation among the tested varieties ranged from 0.45% to 50.64%, among which the coefficient of variation of lettuce variation (lines) of free amino acid content in fleshy stems was the largest, reaching 50.64%. The content of stem chlorophyll and soluble protein, leaf reducing sugar showed great differences with the values of coefficient of variation all greater than 30%. The appearance quality, commerciality, and nutrition quality all showed strong correlation among several indicators. The excellent fresh varieties for 3 stem ('Zuhe 2019135' 'Chuanlüxiang 1' and 'Hongjiansun 2') and 3 leaf ('Zhutongqing' 'Xincuizhu' and 'Zuhe 2019135') were selected, respectively. The postharvest quality characteristics of some main lettuce varieties cultivated in winter and spring in the vegetable production area of Chengdu Plain were further clarified in this study, which could provide reference for the selection of excellent fresh lettuce varieties in production.

Abstract The pig gut virome plays a vital role in the gut microbial ecosystem of pigs. However, a comprehensive understanding of their diversity and a reference database for the virome are currently lacking. To address this gap, we established a Pig Virome Database (PVD) that comprised of 5,566,804 viral contig sequences from 4650 publicly available gut metagenomic samples using a pipeline designated “metav”. By clustering sequences, we identified 48,299 viral operational taxonomic units (vOTUs) genomes of at least medium quality, of which 92.83% of which were not found in existing major databases. The majority of vOTUs were identified as Caudoviricetes (72.21%). The PVD database contained a total of 2,362,631 protein-coding genes across the above medium-quality vOTUs genomes that can be used to explore the functional potential of the pig gut virome. These findings highlight the extensive diversity of viruses in the pig gut and provide a pivotal reference dataset for forthcoming research concerning the pig gut virome.

Abstract Temporal modulation recently draws great attentions in wave manipulations, with which one can introduce the concept of temporal multilayer structure, a temporal counterpart of spatially multilayer configurations. This kind of multilayer structure holds temporal interfaces in the time domain, which provides additional flexibility in temporal operations. Here we take this opportunity and propose to simulate a non-Abelian gauge field with a temporal multilayer structure in the discrete physical system. Two basic temporal operations, i.e., the folding/unfolding operation and the phase shift operation are used to design such a temporal multilayer structure, which hence can support noncommutative operations to realize the non-Abelian Aharonov-Bohm interference in the time domain. A two-/three-dimensional non-Abelian gauge field can be built, which may be further extended to higher dimensions. Our work therefore provides a unique platform enabling generalization of non-Abelian physics to arbitrary dimensions and offers a method for wave manipulations with temporal band engineering.

ABSTRACT: Intestinal microbial metabolism has an important impact on the health of laying hens, and microbes are also important hosts for ARGs. However, the relationship between intestinal microbes and antibiotic resistance in laying hens is unclear. In this study, a slaughtering experiment, an in vitro fermentation experiment and a single-bacteria culture experiment were carried out, and metagenomic and metabolomic analyses were used to investigate the relationships between microbial metabolism and the antibiotic resistome in the cecum of laying hens. The results showed that there were different types of ARGs in the intestines of laying hens, and the risk scores of the ARGs tended to decrease with growth stage. A total of 1142 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) were obtained, and Escherichia coli was found to be the dominant ARG host, carrying 62 ARGs. Metabolomics revealed that indole and its derivatives, such as indole-3-lactic acid, were negatively correlated with a variety of ARGs. Moreover, in vitro fermentation experiment and single-bacteria culture experiment demonstrated that indole-3-lactic acid reduced the abundance and risk of multiple ARGs in the intestine and inhibited the growth of the ARG host Escherichia coli. In the context of high concern about intestinal microbial metabolism and antibiotic resistance, this is the first study to focus on the relationship between intestinal microbial metabolism and antibiotic resistance in laying hens. These findings have important implications for healthy farming and antibiotic resistance control.

Abstract The precise targeted delivery of therapeutic agents to deep regions of the brain is crucial for the effective treatment of various neurological diseases. However, achieving this goal is challenging due to the presence of the blood‒brain barrier (BBB) and the complex anatomy of the brain. Here, a biomimetic self‐propelled nanomotor with cascade targeting capacity is developed for the treatment of neurological inflammatory diseases. The self‐propelled nanomotors are designed with biomimetic asymmetric structures with a mesoporous SiO2 head and multiple MnO2 tentacles. Macrophage membrane biomimetic modification endows nanomotors with inflammatory targeting and BBB penetration abilities The MnO2 agents catalyze the degradation of H2O2 into O2, not only by reducing brain inflammation but also by providing the driving force for deep brain penetration. Additionally, the mesoporous SiO2 head is loaded with curcumin, which actively regulates macrophage polarization from the M1 to the M2 phenotype. All in vitro cell, organoid model, and in vivo animal experiments confirmed the effectiveness of the biomimetic self‐propelled nanomotors in precise targeting, deep brain penetration, anti‐inflammatory, and nervous system function maintenance. Therefore, this study introduces a platform of biomimetic self‐propelled nanomotors with inflammation targeting ability and active deep penetration for the treatment of neurological inflammation diseases.

Abstract Background The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the predictive value of alterations in cervical artery hemodynamic parameters induced by a simulated end-inspiratory occlusion test (sEIOT) measured by ultrasound for predicting postinduction hypotension (PIH) during general anesthesia. Methods Patients undergoing gastrointestinal tumor resection under general anesthesia were selected for this study. Ultrasound has been utilized to assess hemodynamic parameters in carotid artery blood flow before induction, specifically focusing on variations in corrected flow time (ΔFTc) and peak blood flow velocity (ΔCDPV), both before and after sEIOT. In order to clarify the content and structural changes of different pectin fractions in grape cell walls under ultrasonic treatment, the grapes were treated with different ultrasonic time and ultrasonic power in this study, and the content of pectin fractions, composition of monosaccharides and structural changes of grape cell walls were analyzed by means of carbazole sulfuric acid method, PMP pre-column derivatization, high-performance liquid gel chromatography , scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and circular dichroism. Results showed that the highest and the lowest contents in fresh grape cell walls were alkali-soluble pectin (NSP) and chelate pectin (CSP), respectively, and they were 27.41 mg/g AIR and 8.25 mg/g AIR. The total pectin decreased after ultrasonic treatments, in which the water-soluble pectin (WSP) increased and the CSP and NSP decreased. A total of six monosaccharides were detected in three pectins, and the monosaccharides of different pectin were not the same. The galactose and arabinose were high in WSP, the glucuronic acid was the most abundant of CSP and the rhamnose were the highest in NSP. After ultrasonic treatment, the contents of monosaccharides decreased, while the composition did not change, and the main chain structure of pectin was no change, but the linear structure and the degree of branch chain were changed. With the increase of ultrasonic times and powers, the molecular weight of different pectins declined gradually. And in the microstructure showed a more loose morphology. In addition, ultrasonic treatment had an effect on the structure and chain conformation of CSP and NSP, which made their maximum response values shift, and the effect of ultrasonic power was more significant. In conclusion, ultrasonic treatment could reduce the pectin and monosaccharide contents in grape cell walls, and affect the molecular linear structure and molecular chain conformation of pectin. These results can provide theoretical basis for the quality change of grape products under ultrasonic treatment.

Autophagy is a cellular process that functions to maintain intracellular homeostasis via the degradation and recycling of defective organelles or damaged proteins. This dynamic mechanism participates in various biological processes, such as the regulation of cellular differentiation, proliferation, survival, and the modulation of inflammation and immune responses. Recent evidence has demonstrated the involvement of polymorphisms in autophagy-related genes in various skin autoimmune diseases. In addition, autophagy, along with autophagy-related proteins, also contributes to homeostasis maintenance and immune regulation in the skin, which is associated with skin autoimmune disorders. This review aims to provide an overview of the multifaceted role of autophagy in skin autoimmune diseases and shed light on the potential of autophagy-targeting therapeutic strategies in dermatology.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in natural waters are of escalating global concern due to their detrimental impact on environmental health. Emerging evidence indicates that algae-bacteria symbionts can affect HAB features, though much about this interplay remains largely unexplored. The current study isolated a new species of Mucilaginibacter (type strain JXJ CY 39T) from culture biomass of the bloom-causing Microcystis aeruginosa FACHB-905 (Maf) from Lake Dianchi, China. Strain JXJ CY 39T was an aerobic, Gram-stain-negative rod bacterium that grew at 5–38°C, pH 4.0–11.0, and 0–3.0% NaCl. Taxonomic evaluation proposed a new species, with Mucilaginibacter lacusdianchii sp. nov., as the species epithet. Experimental results revealed that strain JXJ CY 39T spurred the growth of Maf by supplying soluble phosphorus and nitrogen during cultivation, despite the unavailability of soluble phosphorus and nitrogen. Additionally, by producing the plant hormone indole-3-acetate, strain JXJ CY 39T possibly impacted Maf’s functionality. Results from co-culture experiments with other strains from Maf biomass showed possible effects of strain JXJ CY 39T on the relationship between Maf and other cohabiting bacteria, as well as microcystin toxin production characteristics. Although Maf could foster the growth of strain JXJ CY 39T by supplying organic carbon, the strain’s growth could be regulated via specific chemical compounds based on antibiotic assays. Community composition analysis disclosed that this Mucilaginibacter strain positively affected Maf’s growth and modified densities and types of bacteria linked to Maf. Overall, these results suggest that the interactions between important HAB-causing organisms and their attached bacteria are complex, dynamic, and may influence the growth characteristics of algae.

Abstract Background Companion animals can contribute to the physical and mental health of people and often live in very close association with their owners. However, the antibiotic resistome carried by companion animals and the impact they have on their owners and living environment remain unclear. In this study, we compared the ARG profiles of cats, humans, and their living environments using metagenomic analysis to identify the core ARGs in the cat and human gut and explore the potential impact of cats on ARGs in the human gut through the environment. Results Results showed that the abundance of ARGs in the cat gut was significantly higher than that in the human gut (P 0.05). The rapid development of society and industry as well as the frequent occurrence of oil spills cause the shortage of fresh water resources, which not only affects human safety and life, but also impedes the world-wide sustainable development. To address these challenges, novel membrane materials with unique wettability properties have gained significant attention, particularly in the field of oil/water separation. In this research, we modified the hydrophobic PET fabric to achieve superhydrophilic characteristics using impregnation method. Subsequently, we electrospun hydrophobic PVDF fibers onto the superhydrophilic fabric surface, and PVDF/Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2@PET Janus membrane with asymmetric wettability was obtained. The membrane has an excellent unidirectional liquid transport capacity, and can effectively separate heavy oil or light oil, the separation efficiency is more than 90 %. The results also show that the Janus membrane can be used under alkaline conditions and has satisfactory tensile resistance and re-use performance. This work provides a new idea for Janus membrane design and effectively improves the application potential of the Janus membrane in the field of oil/water separation.

The adsorptive separation of CH4 from CO2 is a promising process for upgrading natural gas. However, thermodynamically selective adsorbents exhibit a strong affinity for CO2 and thus require a high energy compensation for regeneration. Instead, kinetic separation is preferred for a pressure swing adsorption process, although precise control of the aperture size to achieve a tremendous discrepancy in diffusion rates remains challenging. Here, we report a guest solvent-directed strategy for fine-tuning the pore size at a sub-angstrom precision to realize highly efficient kinetic separation. A series of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with isomeric pore surface chemistry were constructed from 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropyli-dene)-bis(benzoic acid) and dicopper paddlewheel notes. The resultant CuFMOF·CH3OH (CuFMOF-c) exhibits an excellent kinetic separation performance thanks to a periodically expanding and contracting aperture with the ideal bottleneck size, which enables the effective trapping of CO2 and impedes the diffusion of CH4, offering an ultrahigh kinetic selectivity (273.5) and equilibrium-kinetic combined selectivity (64.2). Molecular dynamics calculations elucidate the separation mechanism, and breakthrough experiments validate the separation performance.

Owing to the high storage capacity and multiple‐electron‐transfer chemistry of sulfur (S), sulfur‐based (S‐based) batteries with merits of high theoretical capacity/energy density, eco‐friendliness, and abundant supply hold much potential for energy‐storage/conversion devices. The capacity of S‐based batteries is much higher than that of traditional‐metal‐oxide cathode‐based lithium‐ion batteries, which is regarded as the highest capacity of solid‐state cathode materials at the current stage. As a vital component of S‐based batteries, separators play a profound role in resolving urgent issues (e.g., shuttling effect, volume expansion, poor conductivity, and metal dendrites, etc.). So far, some pioneering works have been reported in the exploration of separators for S‐based battery. On this basis, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as a kind of functional materials, offer much possibility for S‐based battery separators due to their advantages such as high porosity, crystalline and well‐defined structures, designable struts, and tunable functions, etc. Herein, the reported works about COFs in S‐based battery separators including their structural characteristics, preparation methods, application forms, and battery properties are summarized. Moreover, also, a brief perspective is proposed on the challenges of COFs applied in S‐based battery separators, and new insights are provided for scientists in this field.

ABSTRACT: Sodium butyrate is a commonly used feed additive and can reduce ammonia (NH3) emissions from laying hens, but the mechanism of this effect is unknown. In this study, the sodium butyrate and cecal content of Lohmann pink laying hens were measured, and in vitro fermentation experiments and NH3-producing bacteria coculture experiments were carried out to explore the relationship between NH3 emissions and its associated microbiota metabolism. Sodium butyrate was found to significantly reduce NH3 emission from the cecal microbial fermentation of Lohmann pink laying hens (P < 0.05). The concentration of NO3−-N in the fermentation broth of the sodium butyrate-supplemented group increased significantly, and the concentration of NH4+-N decreased significantly (P < 0.05). Moreover, sodium butyrate significantly reduced the abundance of harmful bacteria and increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria in the cecum. The culturable NH3-producing bacteria consisted mainly of Escherichia and Shigella, such as Escherichia fergusonii, Escherichia marmotae and Shigella flexnerii. Among them, E. fergusonii had the highest potential for NH3 production. The coculture experiment showed that sodium butyrate can significantly downregulate the expression of the lpdA, sdaA, gcvP, gcvH and gcvT genes of E. fergusonii (P < 0.05), thus reducing the NH3 emission produced by the bacteria during metabolism. In general, sodium butyrate regulated NH3-producing bacteria to reduce NH3 production in the cecum of laying hens. These results are of great significance for NH3 emission reduction in the layer breeding industry and for future research.

Abstract Efficient separation of acetylene (C2H2)/ethylene (C2H4) and acetylene/carbon dioxide (CO2) by adsorption is an industrially promising process, but adsorbents capable of simultaneously capturing trace acetylene from ethylene and carbon dioxide are scarce. Herein, a gate‐opening effect on three isomorphous flexible metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) named Co(4‐DPDS)2MO4 (M = Cr, Mo, W; 4‐DPDS = 4,4‐dipyridyldisulfide) is modulated by anion pillars substitution. The shortest CrO42− strengthens intraframework hydrogen bonding and thus blocks structural transformation after activation, striking a good balance among working capacity, separation selectivity, and trace impurity removal of flexible MOFs out of nearly C2H2/C2H4 and C2H2/CO2 molecular sieving. The exceptional separation performance of Co(4‐DPDS)2CrO4 is confirmed by dynamic breakthrough experiments. It reveals the specific threshold pressures control in anion‐pillared flexible materials enabled elimination of the impurity leakage to realize high purity products through precise control of the intraframework interaction. The adsorption mechanism and multimode structural transformation property are revealed by both calculations and crystallography studies. This work demonstrates the feasibility of modulating flexibility for controlling gate‐opening effect, especially for some cases of significant aperture shrinkage after activation.

The cultivated Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), an important oilseed and edible legume, are widely grown worldwide. The R2R3-MYB transcription factor, one of the largest gene families in plants, is involved in various plant developmental processes and responds to multiple stresses. In this study we identified 196 typical R2R3-MYB genes in the genome of cultivated peanut. Comparative phylogenetic analysis with Arabidopsis divided them into 48 subgroups. The motif composition and gene structure independently supported the subgroup delineation. Collinearity analysis indicated polyploidization, tandem, and segmental duplication were the main driver of the R2R3-MYB gene amplification in peanut. Homologous gene pairs between the two subgroups showed tissue specific biased expression. In addition, a total of 90 R2R3-MYB genes showed significant differential expression levels in response to waterlogging stress. Furthermore, we identified an SNP located in the third exon region of AdMYB03-18 (AhMYB033) by association analysis, and the three haplotypes of the SNP were significantly correlated with total branch number (TBN), pod length (PL) and root-shoot ratio (RS ratio), respectively, revealing the potential function of AdMYB03-18 (AhMYB033) in improving peanut yield. Together, these studies provide evidence for functional diversity in the R2R3-MYB genes and will contribute to understanding the function of R2R3-MYB genes in peanut.

We developed a new computational method, Single-Cell Entropy Network (SCEN) to analyze single-cell RNA-seq data, which used the information of gene-gene associations to discover new heterogeneity of immune cells as well as identify existing cell types. Based on SCEN, we defined association-entropy (AE) for each cell and each gene through single-cell gene co-expression networks to measure the strength of association between each gene and all other genes at a single-cell resolution. Analyses of public datasets indicated that the AE of ribosomal protein genes (RP genes) varied greatly even in the same cell type of immune cells and the average AE of RP genes of immune cells in each person was significantly associated with the healthy/disease state of this person. Based on existing research and theory, we inferred that the AE of RP genes represented the heterogeneity of ribosomes and reflected the activity of immune cells. We believe SCEN can provide more biological insights into the heterogeneity and diversity of immune cells, especially the change of immune cells in the diseases.

Iron is an essential trace element with an abroad physiological function, and iron deficiency can impair animal health. Vitamin C (VC) has the potential to release iron from diets and increase iron uptake. This study evaluates the effects of dietary iron and vitamin C on the growth performance, iron utilization, antioxidant capacity, and nonspecific immunity of the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis). Juvenile E. sinensis (1.14±0.01 g) were fed six diets supplemented with three levels of iron (41.40, 92.25, and 143.00 mg/kg), and each iron level supplemented either 4.33 mg/kg or 700.90 mg/kg of vitamin C for 8 weeks. Crabs fed 41.40 mg/kg of iron diet had the lowest weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) and had the highest feed conversion rate (FCR) regardless of dietary vitamin C levels. Dietary 700.90 mg/kg of vitamin C improved WG and SGR but decreased FCR when the diets were supplemented with 41.40 and 143.00 mg/kg of iron (P

Strengthening green eco-efficiency has emerged as one of China’s key objectives for its present economic green development. All walks of life have progressively begun to pay attention to how to leverage the rapidly developing digital economy to promote regional green eco-efficiency upgrading. This work first develops a mathematical model to investigate the inherent mechanism of digital economy development on green eco-efficiency enhancement and presents a research hypothesis, which is then followed by a fixed-effects model and a spatial econometric model to evaluate the geographic spillover effect of digital economy development on green eco-efficiency enhancement and the moderating influence of environmental regulation. According to the test results, the growth of the digital economy can greatly increase green eco-efficiency, with environmental legislation acting as a helpful moderator. Additional empirical research revealed that environmental regulation and the development of the digital economy both favourably promote and adjust green eco-efficiency. However, there are various effects of different regions and different time periods, it shows that there are “strong in the East and weak in the west,” “weak in the East and weak in the west” and “weak first and then strong.” Therefore, each region in China should promote the development of digital economy, accelerate the digitization of industry, and promote the green ecological efficiency of China’s industry with the digital economy a grip. At the same time, the regulating role of government environmental regulations should be given full play to narrow the differences between regions and promote the green, coordinated, and sustainable development of each regional economy.

The similar nervous system structure between crustaceans and insects and the high-water solubility of thiamethoxam can lead to the more severe toxicity of thiamethoxam to crustaceans. However, the effects of thiamethoxam on crustaceans are unclear. Therefore, a 96-h acute toxicity test was performed to explore the hepatotoxicity and neurotoxicity effects of thiamethoxam on Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) at concentrations 0 µg/L, 150 µg/L and 300 µg/L. The antioxidant and detoxification systems (including phases I and II) were significantly activated after exposure of juvenile crabs to thiamethoxam for 24 h in 300 µg/L group, whereas the toxic activation effect in 150 μg/L group was delayed. Moreover, a similar pattern was observed for the transcription levels of immune-related genes. Further analysis of inflammatory signaling pathway-related genes showed that thiamethoxam exposure with 300 µg/L for 24 h may induce a pro-inflammatory response through the NF-κB pathway. In contrast, the gene expression levels in 150 µg/L group were significantly upregulated compared with 0 µg/L group after 96 h. In addition, although the acute exposure of 150 μg/L thiamethoxam did not seem to induce significant neurotoxicity, the acetylcholinesterase activity was significantly decreased in 300 μg/L group after thiamethoxam exposure for 96 h. Correspondingly, thiamethoxam exposure with 300 µg/L for 24 h resulted in significantly downregulated transcriptional levels of synaptic transmission-related genes (e.g. dopamine-, gamma-aminobutyric acid- and serotonin-related receptors). Therefore, thiamethoxam may be harmful and cause potential toxic threats such as neurotoxicity and metabolic damage to crustaceans.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are emerging pollutants that have received extensive attention. Many different types of ARGs exist in livestock wastewater. If not effectively treated, they can threaten animal production, public health and the ecological safety of the surrounding environment. To address the high risk of livestock wastewater contamination by ARGs, the effects of different wastewater treatment processes on ARGs and their influencing factors and mechanisms are reviewed herein. Additionally, the current problems associated with removal of ARGs are discussed, and future research is proposed.

Bacterial speck caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato is a serious foliar disease on tomato. However, it is still unknown how organic fertilizers application mediates plant defense against foliar pathogens by altering the composition of the soil microbial community. We conducted a 2-cycle pot experiment involving chemical and organic fertilizers and tracked tomato foliar pathogen incidence. Using microbiome sequencing, we then compared the differences in bulk and rhizosphere microbial communities. The results showed that, compared with soils amended with chemical fertilizer, soils amended with organic fertilizer gradually and significantly presented a reduction in tomato foliar disease, and the bacterial richness and diversity significantly increased. Moreover, the bacterial and fungal compositions of the bulk soil and rhizosphere soil of the organic fertilizer and chemical fertilizer treatments were different from each other. More importantly, the abundance of some potentially beneficial bacteria, such as Luteolibacter, Glycomyces, Flavobacterium, and Flavihumibacter, increased in the organic fertilizer-amended soil, and these genera were significantly negatively correlated with the incidence of tomato foliar disease. These results suggest that organic fertilizers can alter the taxonomy of the soil microbiome and that some specific beneficial microbial communities may play an important role in reducing the infection of foliar pathogens by inducing plant resistance.

Oxyresveratrol (ORes, trans-2,4,3′,5′-tetrahydroxy stilbene) naturally exists in mulberry, grapes, peanuts and other plants. It belongs to stilbene polyphenolic family and has an extra hydroxyl group at 2-position comparing with resveratrol (Res). Hence, ORes has stronger antioxidant activity than resveratrol. In present study, we employed a rat hepatic fibrosis model induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and administrated ORes via gavage feeding to study the protective effects and potential mechanisms of ORes against hepatic fibrosis. We demonstrated that rat liver oxidative damage induced by CCl4 was significantly alleviated after ORes feeding. Furthermore, the mRNA transcription levels of α-smooth muscle actinn (α-SMA), desmin, and two MMPs (MMP2 and MMP9) were reduced and the expression levels of transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1), p- small mother against decapen-taplegic protein (Smad)1/2 and p-extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK)1/2 in the liver tissue down-regulated dramatically. In a parallel study with Res, ORes showed more efficacious protective effect than Res against rat liver fibrosis, which is attributed to extended conjugation system due to the extra hydroxyl group at 2-position on ORes making it more electron-rich and susceptible to oxidation than Res. Therefore, dietary consumption of mulberry and other fruits containing ORes may be beneficial in the prevention of liver fibrosis.

Short tandem repeats on the Y chromosome (Y-STRs), characterized by paternal inheritance, are valuable in forensic practice. Notably, the potential application of Y-STRs in pedigrees should be drawn upon, especially in China’s surname-concentrated natural villages. The study focused on 50 Y-STRs, including 13 rapidly mutating (RM) Y-STRs that largely constitute the current Y-STR commercial kits, and determined the differences in these Y-STRs between branches in a large pedigree and the discriminatory power of these haplotypes in different units for male relatives. As indicated in the results, 14 inconsistencies were observed at 9 Y-STRs between 10 father-son pairs. In addition, these 50 Y-STR haplotypes discriminated 10 out of 47 father-son pairs, 106 of 148 cousin pairs, 70 of 119 uncle-nephew pairs, 17 of 39 brother pairs, and 14 out of 33 grandfather-grandson pairs in a large pedigree. The RM Y-STR set is able to differentiate close male relatives in a large pedigree.

Taking the Ben Cao Gang Mu (《本草纲目》 Compendium of Materia Medica) (Jinling edition金陵本) as the research object and “Jing” as the search term, this article summarizes the quantity of medicinals containing “Jing” in Ben Cao Gang Mu, analyzes the connotation and application of “Jing” in traditional Chinese medicine, and finds that the application of “Jing” in medicine does not deviate from the original meaning of “Jing,” but endows it with the concepts of medicine and pharmacy, and expands the application scope of “Jing.” This study is helpful to understand and use spermicide more reasonably.

PICALM rs3851179, one of the genes most frequently linked to susceptibility of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (LOAD), plays a crucial role in regulating amyloid precursor protein, and amyloid β (Aβ) transcytosis. To explore the effects of PICALM and AD continuum stage on cortex thickness, CSF Aβ, and tau, 188 cognitively normal controls, 261 MCI patients, and 140 early LOAD patients were recruited, and each group was divided into rs3851179 A-carriers and GG-carriers. A full factorial ANCOVA was used to analyze the main effects and interactive effects of AD continuum stage, and PICALM. The interactive effects of AD continuum stage and PICALM on cortex thickness and CSF biomarkers were not significant. The main effect of PICALM was significant on the left postcentral cortex thickness, and the cortex thickness of A-carriers was less than that of GG-carriers. The rs3851179 A-carriers displayed higher Aβ42 levels and Aβ42/40 ratios, and lower P/T–tau ratios, compared with GG-carriers. A higher MMSE score was found in A-carriers among the LOAD patients. In conclusion, the main effects of PICALM were independent of AD continuum stage, and PICLAM rs3851179 genotypes may modulate left postcentral cortex thickness, Aβ42 level, and P/T–tau ratio. The rs3851179 A-allele may protect the cognitive function of LOAD patients.

Melasma is a common refractory acquired pigmentary skin disease that mainly affects middle-aged women. The pathogenesis of melasma is still uncertain, while abnormal vascular endothelial cells may play a role. We previously demonstrated the yellow light of light-emitting diodes (LED) could inhibit melanogenesis through the photobiomodulation (PBM) of melanocytes and keratinocytes. In the current study, we investigated the effect of 590 nm LED on the function of human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1). We revealed 0–40 J/cm2 590 nm LED had no toxic effect on HMEC-1 in vitro. 590 nm LED irradiation significantly reduced cell migration, tube formation, as well as the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and stem cell factor (SCF), a pro-melanogenic factor. Moreover, we illustrated that 590 nm LED inhibited the phosphorylation of the AKT/PI3K/mTOR signaling pathway, and the inhibitory effect on HMEC-1 could be partially reversed by insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), an AKT/PI3K/mTOR pathway agonist. Besides, we conducted a pilot clinical study and observed a marked improvement on facial erythema and pigmentation in melasma patients after amber LED phototherapy. Taken together, 590 nm LED inhibited HMEC-1 migration, tube formation and the secretion of VEGF and SCF, predominantly through the inhibition of the AKT/PI3K/mTOR pathway, which may serve as a novel therapeutic option for melasma.

Abstract There is growing interest in developing triplet photosensitizers in terms of implementing photochemical strategies in synthetic chemistry. However, synthesis of stable triplet organic photosensitizers is nontrivial and often requires the use of heavy atoms. Herein, an alternative strategy is demonstrated to enhance the triplet generation efficiency by implanting lone‐pair donor–acceptor bonds in the conjugated covalent organic frameworks (COFs). This powerful method is validated using COFs that host triazine, a moiety that has been extensively investigated in photocatalysis. Spectroscopic analysis and theoretical calculations reveal substantial improvements in the photoabsorptivity and triple‐state photogeneration efficiency, consistent with catalytic tests concerning industrially relevant sulfide oxidation. These systems represent a promising addition to the rapidly increasing arsenal of synthetic photocatalytic systems.

Autophagy is a controlled mechanism of intracellular self-digestion with functions in metabolic adaptation to stress, in development, in proteostasis and in maintaining cellular homeostasis in ageing. Deletion of autophagy in epidermal keratinocytes does not prevent the formation of a functional epidermis and the permeability barrier but causes increased susceptibility to damage stress and metabolic alterations and accelerated ageing phenotypes. We here investigated how epidermal autophagy deficiency using Keratin 14 driven Atg7 deletion would affect the lipid composition of the epidermis of young and old mice. Using mass spectrometric lipidomics we found a reduction of age-related accumulation of storage lipids in the epidermis of autophagy-deficient mice, and specific changes in chain length and saturation of fatty acids in several lipid classes. Transcriptomics and immunostaining suggest that these changes are accompanied by changes in expression and localisation of lipid and fatty acid transporter proteins, most notably fatty acid binding protein 5 (FABP5) in autophagy knockouts. Thus, maintaining autophagic activity at an advanced age may be necessary to maintain epidermal lipid homeostasis in mammals.

Land urbanization is a comprehensive mapping of the relationship between urban production, life and ecology in urban space and a spatial carrier for promoting the modernization of cities. Based on the remote sensing monitoring data of the land use status of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration collected in 2010 and 2020, the spatial differentiation characteristics and influencing factors of land urbanization in the area were analyzed comprehensively using hot spot analysis, kernel density estimation, the multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) model and other methods. The results indicated the following: (1) From 2010 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of land urbanization in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration was 0.50%, and nearly 64.28% of the counties had an average annual growth rate that lagged behind the overall growth rate. It exhibited dynamic convergence characteristics. (2) The differentiation pattern of land urbanization in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration was obvious from the southeast to the northwest. The hot spots of land urbanization were consistently concentrated in the southeastern coastal areas and showed a trend of spreading, while the cold spots were concentrated in the northwest of Anhui Province, showing a shrinking trend. (3) Compared with the GWR model and the OLS model, the MGWR model has a better fitting effect and is more suitable for studying the influencing factors of land urbanization. In addition, there were significant spatial differences in the scale and degree of influence of different influencing factors. Analyzing and revealing the spatiotemporal characteristics and driving mechanism of land urbanization in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration has important theoretical value and practical significance for the scientific understanding of new-type urbanization and the implementation of regional integration and rural revitalization strategies.

Abstract Protein Kinase D (PKD) family contains PKD1, PKD2, and PKD3 in human. Compared to consistent tumor‐suppressive functions of PKD1 in breast cancer, how PKD2/3 functions in breast cancer are not fully understood. In the current study, we found that PKD2 and PKD3 but not PKD1 were preferentially overexpressed in breast cancer and involved in regulating cell proliferation and metastasis. Integrated phosphoproteome, transcriptome, and interactome showed that PKD2 was associated with multiple cancer‐related pathways, including adherent junction, regulation of actin cytoskeleton, and cell cycle‐related pathways. ELAVL1 was identified as a common hub‐node in networks of PKD2/3‐regulated phosphoproteins and genes. Silencing ELAVL1 inhibited breast cancer growth in vitro and in vivo. Direct interaction between ELAVL1 and PKD2 or PKD3 was demonstrated. Suppression of PKD2 led to ELAVL1 translocation from the cytoplasm to the nucleus without significant affecting ELAVL1 expression. Taken together, we characterized the oncogenic functions of PKD2/3 in breast cancer and their association with cancer‐related pathways, which shed lights on the oncogenic roles and mechanisms of PKDs in breast cancer.

Individuals with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) are more likely to develop into Alzheimer disease (AD) in the future. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) studies have shown alterations of intrinsic brain activity (IBA) in SCD individuals. However, rs-fMRI studies to date have mainly focused on static characteristics of IBA, with few studies reporting dynamics- and concordance-related changes in IBA indices in SCD individuals. To investigate these aberrant changes, a temporal dynamic analysis of rs-fMRI data was conducted on 94 SCD individuals (71.07 ± 6.18 years, 60 female), 75 (74.36 ± 8.42 years, 35 female) mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients, and 82 age-, gender-, and education-matched controls (NCs; 73.88 ± 7.40 years, 49 female) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative database. The dynamics and concordance of the rs-fMRI indices were calculated. The results showed that SCD individuals had a lower amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations dynamics in bilateral hippocampus (HP)/parahippocampal gyrus (PHG)/fusiform gyrus (FG) and bilateral cerebellum, a lower fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation dynamics in bilateral precuneus (PreCu) and paracentral lobule, and a lower regional homogeneity dynamics in bilateral cerebellum, vermis, and left FG compared with the other two groups, whereas those in MCI patients were higher (Gaussian random field–corrected, voxel-level P < 0.001, cluster-level P < 0.05). Furthermore, SCD individuals had higher concordance in bilateral HP/PHG/FG, temporal lobe, and left midcingulate cortex than NCs, but those in MCI were lower than those in NCs. No correlation between concordance values and neuropsychological scale scores was found. SCD individuals showed both dynamics and concordance-related alterations in IBA, which indicates a compensatory mechanism in SCD individuals. Temporal dynamics analysis offers a novel approach to capturing brain alterations in individuals with SCD.

Vitiligo is a common depigmented disease with unclear pathogenesis. Autophagy is crucial for maintaining cellular homeostasis and has been linked to a variety of autoimmune disorders; however, there have been no reports exploring the involvement of autophagy-related genes (ARGs) in vitiligo using bioinformatics methodologies. In this study, RNA-sequencing technology was used to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and the Human Autophagy Database (HADb) was overlapped to identify differentially expressed autophagy-related genes (DEARGs) in stable non-segmental vitiligo (NSV). Bioinformatics analyses were conducted with R packages and Ingenuity Pathways Analysis (IPA). DEARGs were further confirmed with qRT-PCR. Critical autophagy markers were detected with Western blotting analysis. We identified a total of 39 DEARGs in vitiligo lesions. DEARGs-enriched canonical pathways, diseases and bio functions, upstream regulators, and networks were discovered. qRT-PCR confirmed the significant increases in FOS and RGS19 in vitiligo lesions. Lower microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain (LC3) II/LC3I ratio and higher sequestosome 1 (SQSTM1, p62) expression were found in vitiligo lesions. In conclusion, this study provided a new insight that autophagy dysregulation appeared in stable vitiligo lesions and might be involved in the etiology of vitiligo by taking part in multiple pathways and bio functions.

The anoxic-oxic (A/O) wastewater treatment process that is widely used in pig farms in China is an important repository for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, the distribution of ARGs and their hosts in the A/O process has not been well characterized. In this study, the wastewaters in the anoxic and oxic tanks for A/O processes were collected from 38 pig farms. The concentrations of 20 subtypes of ARGs, 5 denitrification-related genes, 2 integrons, and bacterial community composition were investigated. Bacterial genome binning was performed using metagenome sequencing. In this study, 20 subtypes of ARGs and integrons were detected in all sampling sites. A total of 16 of the 20 subtypes of ARGs were detected with the highest abundance in anoxic tanks, and sul1 was detected with a maximum average abundance of 19.21 ± 0.24 log10 (copies/mL). Cooccurrence patterns were observed for some genes in the pig farm A/O process, such as sul1 and intl1, sul1 and tetG, and tetO and tetW. There was a significant cooccurrence pattern between the dominant denitrifying bacteria and some ARGs (blaTEM, ermB, tetC, tetH and tetQ), so the dominant denitrifying bacteria were considered to be potential ARG hosts. In addition, 170 highly abundant bacterial genome bins were assembled and further confirmed that the denitrifying bacteria Brachymonas, Candidatus Competibacter, Thiobacillus and Steroidobacter were the important ARG hosts in the pig farm A/O process, providing a useful reference for the surveillance and risk management of ARGs in pig farm wastewater.

This paper deals with the fixed-time tracking control problem of extended nonholonomic chained-form systems with state observers. According to the structure characteristic of such chained-form systems, two subsystems are considered to design controllers, respectively. First of all, using the fixed-time control theory, a controller is proposed to make the first tracking error subsystem converge to zero in bounded time independent initial state. Second, a state observer is proposed to estimate the unmeasurable states of the second subsystem. And the precise state estimation can be presented from the observer within finite time; moreover, the upper bound of time is a constant independent on the initial estimation error. Third, a fixed-time controller is designed to drive all states of the second chained-form subsystem to zero within pre-calculated time. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is validated by simulation results.

Despite our continuous improvement in understanding the evolution of antibiotic resistance, the changes in the carbon metabolism during the evolution of antibiotic resistance remains unclear. To investigate the evolution of antibiotic resistance and the changes in carbon metabolism under antibiotic pressure, Escherichia coli K-12 was evolved for 38 passages under a concentration gradient of doxycycline (DOX). The 0th-passage sensitive strain W0, the 20th-passage moderately resistant strain M20, and the 38th-passage highly resistant strain E38 were selected for the determination of biofilm formation, colony area, and carbon metabolism levels, as well as genome and transcriptome sequencing. The MIC of DOX with E. coli significantly increased from 4 to 96 μg/ml, and the IC50 increased from 2.18 ± 0.08 to 64.79 ± 0.75 μg/ml after 38 passages of domestication. Compared with the sensitive strain W0, the biofilm formation amount of the resistant strains M20 and E38 was significantly increased (p < 0.05). Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were distributed in antibiotic resistance-related genes such as ribosome targets, cell membranes, and multiple efflux pumps. In addition, there were no mutated genes related to carbon metabolism. However, the genes involved in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites and carbon metabolism pathway were downregulated, showing a significant decrease in the metabolic intensity of 23 carbon sources (p < 0.05). The results presented here show that there may be a correlation between the evolution of E. coli DOX resistance and the decrease of carbon metabolism, and the mechanism was worthy of further research, providing a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of microbial resistance.

β-adrenergic antagonists (β-blockers) with at least one chiral center are an exceedingly important class of drugs used mostly to treat cardiovascular diseases. At least 70 β-blockers have been investigated in history. However, only a few β-blockers, e.g., timolol, are clinically marketed as an optically pure enantiomer. Therefore, the separation of racemates of β-blockers is essential both in the laboratory and industry. Many approaches have been explored to obtain the single enantiomeric β-blocker, including high performance liquid chromatography, supercritical fluid chromatography and simulated moving bed chromatography. In this article, a review is presented on different chromatographic methods applied for the enantioseparation of β-blockers, covering high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) and simulated moving bed chromatography (SMB).

In this paper, we explore associations among undergraduate students' perceptions of professor cultural competence, students' perceptions of professor growth mindset, and students' motivation to engage in intercultural interactions. In two studies (N[subscript study 1] = 351, N[subscript study 2] = 277), we find that when students perceive their professor to be more culturally competent, they report higher self-efficacy, value, and mastery-approach orientation toward intercultural interactions. However, somewhat unexpectedly, students who perceive their professors to have higher cultural competence also report higher performance-avoidance orientation toward intercultural interactions. When students perceive their professors to have a stronger growth mindset, they report lower emotional costs toward intercultural interactions. Further, in Study 1 but not Study 2, we find interactions between perceived professor cultural competence and perceived professor mindset such that the combination of perceiving high cultural competence and high growth mindset led to the highest student-reported self-efficacy and the lowest emotional cost toward engaging in intercultural interactions. Although exploratory and preliminary in nature, these findings suggest that students in classes where professors demonstrate high cultural competence may be more motivated to engage in intercultural interactions; however, it may be important for professors to also communicate a growth mindset if they want to reduce potential threats associated with engaging in intercultural interactions.

In this study, we report a cross-linker-based poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) for the sensitive detection of 4-nonylphenol (4-NP). PIL was poly(1,4-butanediyl-3,3′-bis-l-vinylimidazolium dibromide) (poly([V2C4(mim)2]Br2)). Poly([V2C4(mim)2]Br2) was prepared via one-step free-radical polymerization. The poly([V2C4(mim)2]Br2) was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analyzer and scanning electron microscope. The poly([V2C4(mim)2]Br2) was then drop-cast onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to obtain poly([V2C4(mim)2]Br2)/GCE. In comparison with a bare GCE, poly([V2C4(mim)2]Br2)/GCE exhibited higher peak current responses for [Fe(CN)6]3−/4−, lower charge transfer resistance, and larger effective surface area. While comparing the peak current responses, we found the peak current response for 4-NP using poly([V2C4(mim)2]Br2)/GCE to be 3.6 times higher than a traditional cross-linker ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) based poly(EGDMA) modified GCE. The peak current of poly([V2C4(mim)2]Br2) sensor was linear to 4-NP concentration from 0.05 to 5 μM. The detection limit of 4-NP was obtained as 0.01 μM (S/N = 3). The new PIL based electrochemical sensor also exhibited excellent selectivity, stability, and reusability. Furthermore, the poly([V2C4(mim)2]Br2)/GCE demonstrated good 4-NP detection in environmental water samples.

In this paper, we report a new composite of reduced graphene oxide/Fe3O4-ionic liquid based molecularly imprinted polymer (RGO/Fe3O4-IL-MIP) fabricated for diphenylamine (DPA) detection. RGO/Fe3O4-IL-MIP was prepared with RGO/Fe3O4 as supporter, ionic liquid 1-vinyl-3-butylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([VC4mim][PF6]) as functional monomer, ionic liquid 1,4-butanediyl-3,3’-bis-l-vinylimidazolium dihexafluorophosphate ([V2C4(mim)2][(PF6)2]) as cross-linker, and diphenylamine (DPA) as template molecule. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer were employed to characterize the RGO/Fe3O4-IL-MIP composite. RGO/Fe3O4-IL-MIP was then drop-cast onto a glassy carbon electrode to construct an electrochemical sensor for DPA. The differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) peak current response for 20 μM DPA of RGO/Fe3O4-IL-MIP modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was 3.24 and 1.68 times that of RGO/Fe3O4-IL-NIP and RGO/Fe3O4-EGDMA-MIP modified GCEs, respectively, indicating the advantage of RGO/Fe3O4-IL-MIP based on ionic liquid (IL) as a cross-linker. The RGO/Fe3O4-IL-MIP sensor demonstrated good recognition for DPA. Under the optimized conditions, the RGO/Fe3O4-IL-MIP sensor exhibited a DPA detection limit of 0.05 μM (S/N = 3) with a linear range of 0.1⁻30 μM. Moreover, the new RGO/Fe3O4-IL-MIP based sensor detected DPA in real samples with satisfactory results.

A mild, efficient and catalytic ligand-free method for the direct arylation of 5-pyrazolones by Pd-catalyzed C–H bond activation is reported. The process smoothly proceeds and yields are moderate to excellent.

An efficient synthesis of 1,3-diaryl-4-halo-1H-pyrazoles was achieved. The synthesis involves the [3 + 2] dipolar cycloaddition of 3-arylsydnones and 2-aryl-1,1-dihalo-1-alkenes. The process proceeds smoothly in moderate to excellent yields. 1,3-Diaryl-4-halo-1H-pyrazoles are found to be important intermediates that can easily be converted into 1,2,5-triaryl-substituted pyrazoles via Pd-catalyzed C–H bond activation.
