Abstract

PbTaSe$_2$ is a unique topological material, in which the number of nodal lines is expected to change at the structural transition between the lower temperature/pressure "L" phase and the higher temperature/pressure "H" phase. We report the anomalous Nernst effect attributed to the Berry curvature of nodal lines and its change with the structural transition. In the L phase, the Nernst coefficient ($S_{yx}$) shows the step-like magnetic field dependence reminiscent of the anomalous Nernst effect of nonmagnetic Dirac/Weyl semimetals. By applying hydrostatic pressure, we discovered that the amplitude of the anomalous component significantly decreases at the transition to the H phase, which might correspond to the partial annihilation of nodal line structures., Comment: 29 page, 14 figures

Abstract

We report on a pure $^{181}$Ta-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurement of PbTaSe$_2$ at zero magnetic field, which has the advantage of directly probing the intrinsic superconducting phase and electronic states of the TaSe$_2$ layer. We observed the $^{181}$Ta-NQR spectrum of the intrinsic structure with space group $P6$-$m2$, which agrees well with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The nuclear spin relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) shows an exponential decrease well below $T_{\rm_c}$, indicating that the superconducting state is fully gapped in the framework of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. The gap size obtained by $^{181}$Ta-NQR was smaller than the value in previous reports, which may imply that the Fermi surfaces composed of Ta-5$d$ orbitals, where the average pairing interactions are expected to be weaker than in BCS model, are primarily probed. The temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ below $T_{\rm_c}$ can be reproduced well by the superposition of quadrupole and magnetic relaxation mechanisms, together with the distribution of superconducting gap size inherent to multiple Fermi surfaces theoretically proposed in PbTaSe$_2$., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

The most common cause of acquired hydrocephalus in infants is hemorrhage, most often as a consequence of prematurity. Other important causes include neoplasm and infection, usually bacterial meningitis. Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in term infants usually results in secondary microcephaly. We report an infant with severe HIE at birth treated by therapeutic hypothermia who developed progressive acquired hydrocephalus over 2 months, although no cause of the hydrocephalus was identified. Although hydrocephalus, even intraventricular hemorrhage, is uncommon in term infants with HIE, careful follow-up of the head circumference is important, even if no findings indicating possible causes of hydrocephalus, such as hemorrhage, are detected on ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging. Abstract

This study investigated whether dual tasks comprising cognitive tasks and occupations related to daily living can improve the mental and cognitive function of Japanese community-dwelling older adults. Participants included 30 older adults, equally divided into intervention and control groups. The outcome measures were memory, attention, depression, and health-related quality of life. No adverse effects of the intervention were observed in any participant in the intervention group. Logical memory I, logical memory II, and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale scores showed a significant interaction. Dual tasks combining cognitive tasks and occupations may help improve delayed recall and alleviate depression. A novel attempt to integrate cognitive stimulation and activities valued by individuals may help mediate age-related cognitive function decline and reduce depressive symptoms in community-dwelling older adults. Abstract

Effects of gamma-ray radiation damage on energy spectra and polarization of the CdTe radiation detector with the Schottky barrier are demonstrated for application to the gamma-ray imaging equipment in diagnostic nuclear medicine. In particular, the polarization recovery mechanism by momentary bias-off (bias refreshment) is incorporated into the detector system, and the effect of radiation damage on the bias refreshment is quantitatively evaluated. The Schottky barrier is formed by using In as the anode of the CdTe detector. The gamma-ray irradiation source for the radiation damage test is [sup.60]Co. Gamma-ray count rate in an energy window and leakage current between the cathode and the anode are not affected until irradiation at 6.83 kGy. Energy resolution is not affected until irradiation at 66.8 Gy, and there is significant deterioration when irradiation is more than 1.29 kGy. Polarization of the CdTe detector is hardly affected and can be recovered by the bias refreshment for irradiation at 66.8 Gy. However, complete recovery becomes impossible at more than 1.29 kGy irradiation. In conclusion, it is demonstrated that the CdTe detector can be used as the gamma-ray detector in SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) equipment for more than 20 years, and continuous SPECT examinations lasting more than 120 min become possible with the bias refreshment. 32. Selenium deficiency in fisher-344 rats decreases plasma and tissue homocysteine concentrations and alters plasma homocysteine and cysteine redox status

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to determine the effect of graded amounts of dietary selenium on plasma and tissue parameters of methionine metabolism including homocysteine. Male weanling Fisher-344 rats (n = 7-8/group) were fed a selenium-deficient, torula yeast-based diet, supplemented with 0 (selenium deficient), 0.02, 0.05 or 0.1 [micro]g (adequate) selenium (as selenite)/g diet. After 61 d, plasma total homocysteine and cysteine were decreased (P < 0.0001) and glutathione increased (P < 0.0001) by selenium deficiency. The concentrations of homocysteine in kidney and heart were decreased (P = 0.02) by selenium deficiency. The activities of liver betaine homocysteine methyltransferase, methionine synthase, S-adenosylmethionine synthase, cystathionine synthase and cystathionase were determined; selenium deficiency affected only betaine homocysteine methyltransferase, which was decreased (P < 0.0001). The ratios of plasma free reduced homocysteine (or cysteine) to free oxidized homocysteine (or cysteine) or to total homocysteine (or cysteine) were increased by selenium deficiency, suggesting that selenium status affects the normally tightly controlled redox status of these thiols. Most differences due to dietary selenium were between rats fed 0 or 0.02 [micro]g selenium/g diet and those fed 0.05 or 0.1 [micro]g selenium/g diet. The metabolic consequences of a marked decrease in plasma homocysteine and smaller but significant decreases in tissue homocysteine are not known. Abstract

Conventional microstrip gas chambers (MSGCs) have encountered many difficulties, such as limited gas gain and sparking damages. We propose a new multigrid-type MSGC (M-MSGC) to overcome some of these difficulties. Additional grid strips are inserted between the anode and the cathode in this new type of MSGC. Gaps between these strips are chosen to be as small as 10 [micro]m where one can expect an efficient removal of the surface charge. With the existence of other strips with lower potentials than the anode, the field strength around the neighboring grid to the anode strip is not as high as the conventional small-gap MSGCs. The contribution of the surface streamer to the damage is greatly suppressed because the electric field parallel to the surface is screened by the intermediate grid electrodes. However, additional electrodes also screen all the electric field of the upper part of the substrate, and we cannot observe induced signals from the backside of the substrate. To overcome that difficulty, we propose another signal readout method using a patterning approach. Floating pads are placed close to the cathode strip on the surface of the M-MSGC, and the induced charges are read out via the pads. If the area of the pads is sufficiently large and the positive charges are moving toward the pads, the backside electrodes can sense the induced charge. Collected charges on the pads are leaked through the surface resistance. The backside signal through 2.3-mm-thick glass readout of the position along the cathode strips is successfully confirmed through experimental results.
