Excited states of125Sb have been studied using in-beam γ spectroscopy techniques via the124Sn(7Li, α2n) reaction at a beam energy of 32 MeV. A high-spin level scheme including 21 new γ-transitions and 14 new excited states have been established. Three isomers have been identified at 1970, 2110 and 2471 keV and the ranges of their half-lives have been estimated from the delayed coincidence data. The level structure of125Sb is discussed in terms of particle-core excitation coupling. With the help of empirical shell model calculations the three isomers are proposed to have three-quasiparticle πg7/2⊗ v( h 11/2 s 1/2)5−, πg7/2⊗ v( h 11/2 d 3/2)7− and πg7/2⊗ v( h )10 + configurations, respectively. Marine sponges are an excellent source of biologically active secondary metabolites. We focus on deep-sea sponges for our discovery study. A marine sponge Cladocroce sp. exhibited cytotoxic activity in the bioactivity screening. From this sponge a previously unreported cytotoxic glycosphingolipid, calyxoside B, was isolated and the structure of this compound was elucidated by analyses of MS and NMR spectra and chemical derivatization. We converted the ketone in the middle of a long aliphatic chain into an oxime to which was applied Beckmann rearrangement to afford two positional isomers of amides. The products were subjected to acidic hydrolysis followed by LC-MS analysis, permitting us to assign unequivocally the position of the ketone. Calyxoside B shows cytotoxicity against HeLa cells with an IC 50 value of 31 µM and also weakly stimulated the production of cytokines in mice.

There is a high prevalence of smoking among nursing personnel, despite the fact that nursing is a health care profession. In Japan there are 4 types of licensed nursing professionals. However, the prevalence of smoking among different types of licensed personnel has not been clarified. We attempted to clarify the prevalence of smoking among the various types of licensed nursing personnel and the factors associated with it. Among the members of the Japanese Nursing Association, 6000 nurses were randomly selected. The participants were sent a questionnaire on smoking habits, personal characteristics, lifestyle habits, and employment status by mail. Current smokers accounted for 1.3% of public health nurses, 4.0% of midwives, 8.2% of registered nurses, and 16.3% of assistant nurses. The license type of nursing personnel was a factor significantly associated with current smoking.

Shallow submarine volcanoes have been newly discovered near the Tokara Islands, which are situated at the volcanic front of the northern Ryukyu Arc in southern Japan. Here, we report for the first time the volatile geochemistry of shallow hydrothermal plumes, which were sampled using a CTD-RMS system after analyzing water column images collected by multi-beam echo sounder surveys. These surveys were performed during the research cruise KS-14-10 of the R/V Shinsei Maru in a region stretching from the Wakamiko Crater to the Tokara Islands. The 3 He flux and methane flux in the investigated area are estimated to be (0.99-2.6) × 10 4 atoms/cm 2 /sec and 6-60 t/yr, respectively. The methane in the region of the Tokara Islands is a mix between abiotic methane similar to that found in the East Pacific Rise and thermogenic one. Methane at the Wakamiko Crater is of abiotic origin but affected by isotopic fractionation through rapid microbial oxidation. The helium isotopes suggest the presence of subduction-type mantle helium at the Wakamiko Crater, while a larger crustal component is found close to the Tokara Islands. This suggests that the Tokara Islands submarine volcanoes are a key feature of the transition zone between the volcanic front and the spreading back-arc basin.

A siderophore biosynthetic gene cluster was cloned from a metagenomic library generated from deep sea sediment. The gene cluster was successfully expressed in Escherichia coli to produce bisucaberin, a siderophore originally reported from the marine bacterium Alteromonas haloplanktis. The cloned bisucaberin biosynthetic gene cluster was moderately similar to that of the known bisucaberin producer Vibrio salmonicida. However, the cloned gene cluster consists of four genes rather than three genes found in the V. salmonicida cluster. The low overall homology of the amino acid and nucleotide sequences with those of other species suggests that the cloned genes were derived from one of the unsequenced bacteria including uncultured species.

The lymphocyte subsets and IL-2R (p55/Tac) in breast cancer patients were analyzed using monoclonal antibody and flow cytometry until 6 post-operative month. Results were as follows: 1. Lymphocyte fraction of CD3, 4, 8 was maintained from pre-operative to post-operative 6 month. 2. IL-2R value was lower in recurrence group than in breast benign disease group and it was lower. In pre-operative IL-2R in Stage III group than in Stage I and, Stage II. It was lower in DNA aneuploidy group than in DNA diploidy group. 3. At the post-operative 6 month, IL-2R was higher in Stage III group, ly-factor positive group, v-factor positive group and DNA aneuploidy group than in recurrence group. When breast cancer recurred after resection, IL-2R value returned to initial value. In conclusion, IL-2R may be possibly one of the factors of recurrence of breast cancer.
