Abstract To explore the advantages and disadvantages of 3D Slicer reconstruction and 3D printing localization combined with transcranial neuroendoscope in the surgical treatment of deep cerebral micro cavernous hemangiomas. Method The clinical data of patients with deep cerebral micro cavernous hemangiomas treated by our hospital from June 2022 to February 2023 using 3D Slicer reconstruction and 3D printing localization technology combined with transcranial endoscopic surgery were retrospectively analyzed. A total of 5 cases with complete data were collected, including 2 males and 3 females, aged 9–59 years. All 5 patients had deep supratentorial cavernous hemangiomas with a diameter of less than 1.5 cm, and had clinical symptoms such as headache or epilepsy, and had been diagnosed by CT or MRI. Repeated bleeding from small cavernous hemangiomas in the deep brain can lead to clinical symptoms such as recurrent headache and epilepsy, and is required surgical treatment. However, cavernous hemangiomas often have smaller lesions and are difficult to locate in the deep part. Without neuronavigation, surgery can become extremely difficult. Our team’s newly developed 3D Slicer reconstruction and 3D printing localization technology which could provide new options for surgical treatment of small cavernous hemangiomas or other small lesions in the deep brain, but its accuracy and safety still need to be verified by further clinical research.

Abstract Objective To investigate any connections between urinary organophosphorus pesticide (OPP) metabolites and adiposity measures. Methods In this study, data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) projects from 2003 to 2008, 2011 to 2012, and 2015 to 2018 were analysed. Obesity was defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher. Abdominal obesity was defined as a waist circumference (WC) over 102 cm for men and 88 cm for women. Four urinary OPP metabolites (dimethyl phosphate [DMP], diethyl phosphate [DEP], dimethyl phosphorothioate [DMTP], and diethyl phosphorothioate [DETP]) and adiposity measures were examined using multiple linear regression and logistic regression analyses. The correlations between a variety of urinary OPP metabolites and the prevalence of obesity were investigated using weighted quantile sum regression and quantile g-computation regression. Results In this analysis, a total of 9,505 adults were taken into account. There were 49.81% of male participants, and the average age was 46.00 years old. The median BMI and WC of the subjects were 27.70 kg/m2 and 97.10 cm, respectively. Moreover, 35.60% of the participants were obese, and 54.42% had abdominal obesity. DMP, DMTP, and DETP were discovered to have a negative correlation with WC and BMI in the adjusted models. DMP (OR = 0.93 [95% CI: 0.89–0.98]), DEP (OR = 0.94 [95% CI: 0.90–0.99]), DMTP (OR = 0.91 [95% CI: 0.86–0.95]), and DETP (OR = 0.85 [95% CI: 0.80–0.90]) exhibited negative associations with obesity prevalence. Similar correlations between the prevalence of abdominal obesity and the urine OPP metabolites were discovered. Moreover, the mixture of urinary OPP metabolites showed negative associations with adiposity measures, with DMTP and DETP showing the most significant effects. Conclusion Together, higher levels of urinary OPP metabolites in the urine were linked to a decline in the prevalence of obesity.

The low-cycle fatigue behavior of solutionized (T4) and aged (T6) WE43 magnesium alloys was studied at room temperature. The total strain amplitudes (Δεt/2) were 0.4%, 0.5%, 0.6%, 0.7% and 1.0%. Detailed microstructure evolution was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that plastic strain amplitude decreased with the increasing cycle number in T4 alloy, which is due to the dense persistent slip bands (PSBs) and dynamic precipitates hindering dislocation slip. In contrast, the plastic strain amplitude increases gradually in T6 alloy, which is attributed to the enhanced activation of pyramidal slip. The low-cycle fatigue life of T6 alloy with larger fatigue ductility coefficient is longer than that of T4 alloy. The Coffin-Manson model can accurately predict the fatigue life of T4 and T6 alloys compared to Jahed-Varvani (JV) energy model. For T4 alloy, the fatigue damage mechanism was dominated by basal slip. For T6 alloy, the enhanced pyramidal slip plays an important role to accommodate plastic deformation.

Abstract Introduction The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises testing individuals for COVID-19 after exposure or if they display symptoms. However, a deeper understanding of demographic factors associated with testing hesitancy is necessary. Methods A US nationwide cross-sectional survey of adults with risk factors for developing severe COVID-19 (“high-risk” individuals) was conducted from August 18–September 5, 2023. Objectives included characterizing demographics and attitudes associated with COVID-19 testing. Inverse propensity weighting was used to weight the data to accurately reflect the high-risk adult US population as reflected in IQVIA medical claims data. We describe here the weighted results modeled to characterize demographic factors driving hesitancy. Results In the weighted sample of 5019 respondents at high risk for severe COVID-19, 58.2% were female, 37.8% were ≥ 65 years old, 77.1% were White, and 13.9% had a postgraduate degree. Overall, 67% were Non-testers (who indicated that they were unlikely or unsure of their likelihood of being tested within the next 6 months); these respondents were significantly more likely than Testers (who indicated a higher probability of testing within 6 months) to be female (60.2 vs. 54.1%; odds ratio [OR] [95% confidence interval (CI)], 1.3 [1.1‒1.4]), aged ≥ 65 years old (41.5 vs. 30.3%; OR [95% CI] compared with ages 18‒34 years, 0.6 [0.5‒0.7]), White (82.1 vs. 66.8%; OR [95% CI], 1.4 [1.1‒1.8]), and to identify as politically conservative (40.9 vs. 18.1%; OR [95% CI], 2.6 [2.3‒2.9]). In contrast, Testers were significantly more likely than Non-testers to have previous experience with COVID-19 testing, infection, or vaccination; greater knowledge regarding COVID-19 and testing; greater healthcare engagement; and concerns about COVID-19. Conclusions Older, female, White, rural-dwelling, and politically conservative high-risk adults are the most likely individuals to experience COVID-19 testing hesitancy. Understanding these demographic factors will help guide strategies to improve US testing rates.

Background: As the global aging process accelerates, the health challenges posed by sarcopenia among middle-aged and older adults are becoming increasingly prominent. However, the available evidence on the adverse effects of air pollution on sarcopenia is limited, particularly in the Western Pacific region. This study aimed to explore relationships of multiple air pollutants with sarcopenia and related biomarkers using the nationally representative database. Methods: Totally, 6585 participants aged over 45 years were enrolled from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2011 and 3443 of them were followed up until 2015. Air pollutants were estimated from high-resolution satellite-based spatial-temporal models. In the cross-sectional analysis, we used generalized linear regression, unconditional logistic regression analytical and restricted cubic spline (RCS) methods to assess the single-exposure and non-linear effects of multiple air pollutants on sarcopenia and related surrogate biomarkers (serum creatinine and cystatin C). Several popular mixture analysis techniques such as Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, and quantile-based g-computation (Qgcomp) were further used to examinate the combined effects of multiple air pollutants. Logistic regression was used to further analyze the longitudinal association between air pollution and sarcopenia. Results: Each interquartile range increase in PM2.5, PM10 and NO2 was significantly associated with an increased risk of sarcopenia, with adjusted odds ratios (aORs) of 1.09 [95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.01, 1.20], 1.24 (95 % CI: 1.14, 1.35) and 1.18 (95 % CI: 1.08, 1.28), respectively. Our findings also showed that five air pollutants were significantly associated with the sarcopenia index. In addition, employing a mixture analysis approach, we confirmed significant combined effects of air pollution mixtures on sarcopenia risk and associated biomarkers, with PM10 and PM2.5 identified as major contributors to the combined effect. The results of the exposure-response (E-R) relationships, subgroup analysis, longitudinal analysis and sensitivity analysis all showed the unfavorable impact of air pollution on sarcopenia risk and related vulnerable populations. Conclusions: Single-exposure and co-exposure to multiple air pollutants were positively associated with sarcopenia among middle-aged and older adults in China. Our study provided new evidence that air pollution mixture was significantly associated with sarcopenia related biomarkers.

Background and Objective: Bronchoscopy is a widely used diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for respiratory disorders such as infections and tumors. However, visualizing the bronchial tubes and lungs can be challenging due to the presence of various objects, such as mucus, blood, and foreign bodies. Accurately identifying the anatomical location of the bronchi can be quite challenging, especially for medical professionals who are new to the field. Deep learning-based object detection algorithms can assist doctors in analyzing images or videos of the bronchial tubes to identify key features such as the epiglottis, vocal cord, and right basal bronchus. This study aims to improve the accuracy of object detection in bronchoscopy images by integrating a YOLO-based algorithm with a CBAM attention mechanism. Methods: The CBAM attention module is implemented in the YOLO-V7 and YOLO-V8 object detection models to improve their object identification and classification capabilities in bronchoscopy images. Various YOLO-based object detection algorithms, such as YOLO-V5, YOLO-V7, and YOLO-V8 are compared on this dataset. Experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed method and different algorithms. Results: The proposed method significantly improves the accuracy and reliability of object detection for bronchoscopy images. This approach demonstrates the potential benefits of incorporating an attention mechanism in medical imaging and the benefits of utilizing object detection algorithms in bronchoscopy. In the experiments, the YOLO-V8-based model achieved a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 87.09% on the given dataset with an Intersection over Union (IoU) threshold of 0.5. After incorporating the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) into the YOLO-V8 architecture, the proposed method achieved a significantly enhanced mAP0.5 and mAP0.5:0.95 of 88.27% and 55.39%, respectively. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that by incorporating a CBAM attention mechanism with a YOLO-based algorithm, there is a noticeable improvement in object detection performance in bronchoscopy images. This study provides valuable insights into enhancing the performance of attention mechanisms for object detection in medical imaging.

This study aimed to determine the association between sleep quality and mental health in COVID-19 carriers in China and evaluate the moderating effects of perceived social support. 1283 asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers were enrolled from March 2022 to April 2022 among Ruijin Jiahe Fangcang shelter hospital in Shanghai, China. They were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), and the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS) respectively. Abstract Recently, evidence of stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) signals observed by pulsar timing array (PTA) collaborations, has prompted investigations into their origins. We explore the compatibility of a proposed inflationary scenario, incorporating an intermediate null energy condition (NEC)-violating phase, with the PTA observations. The NEC violation potentially amplifies the primordial tensor power spectrum, offering a promising explanation for PTA observations. Numerical analyses, primarily focused on NANOGrav’s 15-year results, reveal the model’s compatibility with PTA data. Notably, the model predicts a nearly scale-invariant GW spectrum in the mHz frequency range, which sets our scenario apart from other interpretations predicting a red primordial GW spectrum on smaller scales.

Retinal diseases impair the normal function of the visual system, making accurate segmentation of retinal vessels crucial. This paper proposes an improved U-Net network, namely Mitigating Information Loss U-Net (MILU-Net), for retinal vessel segmentation. The network introduces the Multi-Scale Adaptive Detail Feature Fusion (MSADFF) module, ensuring effective fusion of features at different scales before skip connections to reduce information loss. Simultaneously, the Dual Path Upsampling (DPUS) module is employed to enhance image resolution and compensate for spatial and channel information. Experiments on the DRIVE/STARE datasets demonstrate that MILU-Net outperforms in accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, AUC, and F1-Score metrics. Compared to the original U-Net, MILU-Net shows improvements of 1.44% and 1.84% in AUC, as well as 7.15% and 6.35% in sensitivity. Compared to the advanced Attention U-Net, MILU-Net achieves increases of 1.20% and 0.45% in ACC, as well as 2.63% and 2.71% in F1-Score, respectively. These results indicate the significant advantages of MILU-Net in retinal vessel segmentation tasks.

Abstract Background Longitudinal evidence is lacking on the interplay between lifestyle behaviors and depressive symptoms, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated the changes in physical activity and recreational screen time during the pandemic, along with their reciprocal associations with depressive symptoms among children and adolescents. Methods The public health emergency due to the pandemic started in January 2023 and lasted for two months in Shanghai, China. A three-wave longitudinal study was conducted among 1,666 children and adolescents (6–18 years) in January, March, and July 2023. Moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA), recreational screen time, and depressive symptoms were measured using self-reported questionnaires. Random-intercept cross-lagged panel models were constructed to examine the bidirectional associations between physical activity and recreational screen time with depressive symptoms. Results Children and adolescents experienced a significant decrease in MVPA and a substantial increase in recreational screen time during the pandemic, which failed to return to pre-pandemic levels post-pandemic. Pre-pandemic MVPA was negatively associated with subsequent depressive symptoms (β = -0.147). Conversely, pre-pandemic depressive symptoms were positively associated with subsequent recreational screen time (β = 0.085), which in turn predicted heightened post-pandemic depressive symptoms (β = 0.076). When stratified by age, significant associations were found in adolescents but not children. Conclusions Sustained unhealthy changes in physical activity and recreational screen time were observed during the COVID-19 pandemic among children and adolescents. This study elucidates a potential reciprocal relationship between lifestyle behaviors and mental well-being. Effective interventions are emphasized to counter the negative impacts of insufficient physical activity and excessive screen use on the mental health of children and adolescents.

Abstract Background Mutated KRAS may indicate an invasive nature and predict prognosis in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). We aimed to establish a radiomic model using pretreatment T2W MRIs to predict KRAS status and explore the association between the KRAS status or model predictions and lung metastasis. Methods In this retrospective multicentre study, LARC patients from two institutions between January 2012 and January 2019 were randomly divided into training and testing cohorts. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression and the support vector machine (SVM) classifier were utilized to select significant radiomic features and establish a prediction model, which was validated by radiomic score distribution and decision curve analysis. The association between the model stratification and lung metastasis was investigated by Cox regression and Kaplan‒Meier survival analysis; the results were compared by the log-rank test. Results Overall, 103 patients were enrolled (73 and 30 in the training and testing cohorts, respectively). The median follow-up was 38.1 months (interquartile range: 26.9, 49.4). The radiomic model had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.983 in the training cohort and 0.814 in the testing cohort. Using a cut-off of 0.679 defined by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, patients with a high radiomic score (RS) had a higher risk for lung metastasis (HR 3.565, 95% CI 1.337, 9.505, p = 0.011), showing similar predictive performances for the mutant and wild-type KRAS groups (HR 3.225, 95% CI 1.249, 8.323, p = 0.016, IDI: 1.08%, p = 0.687; NRI 2.23%, p = 0.766). Conclusions We established and validated a radiomic model for predicting KRAS status in LARC. Patients with high RS experienced more lung metastases. The model could noninvasively detect KRAS status and may help individualize clinical decision-making.

This study evaluated the feasibilities and outcomes following four-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (4D-MRI) assisted stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for unresectable colorectal liver metastases (CRLMs). From March 2018 to January 2022, we identified 76 unresectable CRLMs patients with 123 lesions who received 4D-MRI guided SBRT in our institution. 4D-MRI simulation with or without abdominal compression was conducted for all patients. The prescription dose was 50–65 Gy in 5–12 fractions. The image quality of computed tomography (CT) and MRI were compared using the Clarity Score. Background COVID-19 carriers experience psychological stresses and mental health issues such as varying degrees of stigma. The Social Impact Scale (SIS) can be used to measure the stigmatisation of COVID-19 carriers who experience such problems. Aims To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the SIS, and the association between stigma and depression among asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers in Shanghai, China. Method A total of 1283 asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers from Shanghai Ruijin Jiahe Fangcang Shelter Hospital were recruited, with a mean age of 39.64 ± 11.14 years (59.6% male). Participants completed questionnaires, including baseline information and psychological measurements, the SIS and Self-Rating Depression Scale. The psychometrics of the SIS and its association with depression were examined through exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and receiver operating characteristic analysis. Results The average participant SIS score was 42.66 ± 14.61 (range: 24–96) years. Analyses suggested the model had four factors: social rejection, financial insecurity, internalised shame and social isolation. The model fit statistics of the four-factor SIS were 0.913 for the comparative fit index, 0.902 for the Tucker–Lewis index and 0.088 for root-mean-square error of approximation. Standard estimated factor loadings ranged from 0.509 to 0.836. After controlling for demographic characteristics, the total score of the 23-item SIS predicted depression (odds ratio: 1.087, 95% CI 1.061–1.115; area under the curve: 0.84, 95% CI 0.788–0.892). Conclusions The Chinese version of the SIS showed good psychometric properties and can be used to assess the level of perceived stigma experienced by asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers.

Abstract GAS41, a member of the human YEATS domain family, plays a pivotal role in human cancer development. It serves as a highly promising epigenetic reader, facilitating precise regulation of cell growth and development by recognizing essential histone modifications, including histone acetylation, benzoylation, succinylation, and crotonylation. Functional readouts of these histone modifications often coincide with cancer progression. In addition, GAS41 functions as a novel oncogene, participating in numerous signaling pathways. Here, we summarize the epigenetic functions of GAS41 and its role in the carcinoma progression. Moving forward, elucidating the downstream target oncogenes regulated by GAS41 and the developing small molecule inhibitors based on the distinctive YEATS recognition properties will be pivotal in advancing this research field.

Abstract Automatic segmentation of skin lesions is a critical step in Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) of melanoma. However, due to the blurring of the lesion boundary, uneven color distribution, and low image contrast, resulting in poor segmentation result. Aiming at the problem of difficult segmentation of skin lesions, this paper proposes an Attention-based Dual-path Feature Fusion Network (ADFFNet) for automatic skin lesion segmentation. Firstly, in the spatial path, a Boundary Refinement (BR) module is designed for the output of low-level features to filter out irrelevant background information and retain more boundary details of the lesion area. Secondly, in the context path, a Multi-scale Feature Selection (MFS) module is constructed for high-level feature output to capture multi-scale context information and use the attention mechanism to filter out redundant semantic information. Finally, we design a Dual-path Feature Fusion (DFF) module, which uses high-level global attention information to guide the step-by-step fusion of high-level semantic features and low-level detail features, which is beneficial to restore image detail information and further improve the pixel-level segmentation accuracy of skin lesion. In the experiment, the ISIC 2018 and PH2 datasets are employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method. It achieves a performance of 0.890/ 0.925 and 0.933 /0.954 on the F1-score and SE index, respectively. Comparative analysis with state-of-the-art segmentation methods reveals that the ADFFNet algorithm exhibits superior segmentation performance.

Abstract Recent pulsar timing array (PTA) experiments have reported strong evidence of the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB). If interpreted as primordial gravitational waves (GWs), the signal favors a strongly blue-tilted spectrum. Consequently, the nonsingular cosmology, which is able to predict a strongly blue-tilted GW spectrum with $$n_T \simeq 2$$ n T ≃ 2 on certain scales, offers a potential explanation for the observed SGWB signal. In this paper, we present a Genesis-inflation model capable of explaining the SGWB signal observed by the PTA collaborations while also overcoming the initial singularity problem associated with the inflationary cosmology. Furthermore, our model predicts distinctive features in the SGWB spectrum, which might be examined by forthcoming space-based gravitational wave experiments.

AlGaN/GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) are widely used in high-frequency and high-power applications owing to the high two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) concentration. However, the microscopic origin of the 2DEG remains unclear. This hinders the development of device fabrication technologies, such as threshold voltage modulation, current collapse suppression, and 2DEG concentration enhancement technologies, as well as AlGaN/GaN sensors with very high sensitivity to polar liquids. To clarify the 2DEG microscopic origin, we studied the effects of gas molecules on AlGaN/GaN surfaces through various experiments and first-principles calculations. The results indicated that the adsorption of gas molecules on the AlGaN/GaN surface is an important phenomenon, clarifying the microscopic origin of the 2DEG. This study elucidates the properties of AlGaN/GaN heterojunctions and promotes the development of new fabrication technologies for AlGaN/GaN devices.

Summary: Low computational efficiency is one of the crucial challenges in electromagnetic forming process simulation. However, the huge gap in switching from the electromagnetic field to mechanics hinders the development of high-efficiency parallel coupling. A graphics processing unit (GPU)-based explicit-implicit coupling method is proposed to address the high-computational cost in simulations of the electromagnetic forming process, in which the large deformation (explicit) and electromagnetic field (implicit) are intimately coupled. The electromagnetic-mechanical coupling is achieved by constructing five parallel algorithms, which include the parallel operations of vector-vector, matrix-matrix, matrix-vector, vector assembly, and matrix-free assembly parallel preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithm. The high-efficiency GPU parallel computing is realized through the special data storage structure and parallel strategies. The explicit-implicit GPU method is validated against the experimental results, and several examples are presented for simulations of the electromagnetic forming process to illustrate both the accuracy and high-efficiency parallel acceleration performance of the present program.

In this study, high-temperature nitriding was used to improve the surface hardness and wear resistance of Co–27Cr–22Fe alloy in a thermogravimetric analyzer. The high-temperature nitriding treatments were performed at 1200 °C for 3 and 10 h. Subsequently, at room temperature, the dry sliding wear test was carried out, and the possible effects of load on friction performance and microstructure of different specimens were investigated. The results show that the microstructure of as-received specimens is composed of γ-Co and MC carbides, while the microstructure of the nitrided specimens contains γ-Co, MC carbides, acicular AlN, and granular (Ti, Nb)N. The thickness of the nitriding layer is 375 μm and 708 μm for nitriding 3 h and nitriding 10 h, respectively. An improvement in microhardness (∼425 HV) was attained for nitrided specimens. For the as-received specimens, the wear rate decreases with increasing load. The as-received specimen exhibits better wear resistance than the nitrided specimen under a high load (∼30 N). The wear mechanism under different loads was mainly abrasive wear, accompanied by adhesive wear. For the nitrided specimens, the specimens show different wear mechanisms under varying loads. Under low load (∼5 N and ∼15 N), the high-temperature nitriding improves the wear resistance, and it exhibits abrasive wear and oxidative wear. Under high load (∼30 N), the wear resistance of the nitrided specimen was significantly reduced, and the wear mechanism is mainly abrasive wear, fatigue wear, and oxidative wear.

Abstract Objectives This study explores whether feelings of defeat (i.e., a sense of failed struggle and losing rank; referred to as defeat for simplicity) mediated the effect of work stress on depression/anxiety, the effect of interpersonal needs on depression/anxiety for Chinese industrial workers, and the possible moderating role of social support. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted in Shenzhen, China in 2019, in total, 2023 industrial workers (of 2700 invited; response rate = 75%) completed a self-administered survey consisted of Job Stress Scale, Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire, Defeat Scale, Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, two face-valid questions for social support, as well as sociodemographic information. Moderated mediation model was tested and loop plots were applied to probe into the conditional effects of work and interpersonal stress on depression and anxiety symptoms. A topologically constrained optimization methodology associated with a discretized differential evolution (DE) is employed for the structure design of a magnetic pulse welding (MPW) coil. To reveal the explicit expression for the effective welding area produced by the MPW process, the impact angle and collision velocity are innovatively considered for determination of the objective function. As several disconnected regions are generated by the Rand-to-Best/2/exp mutation strategy and subsequent superposition-style crossover operation, the algorithm is combined with geometrical correction to form a simply connected conductor. The proposed algorithm is effective and robust as it have been verified based on the evolutionary history and numerical trials with coupled electromagnetic–mechanical simulations. According to physical validation results, a wider effective welding area is produced between aluminum alloy and steel planar plates by the optimized coil, which results in better performance in a tensile test. Under a 23 kJ discharge current, the maximum loading is significantly enhanced by 46.21% compared with the original coil.

Background: This study aimed to explore relationships between job stress and psychological adaptation and how they related to interpersonal needs through mood states among female migrant manufacturing workers. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 16 factories in Shenzhen, China. Sociodemographic, job stress, psychological adaptation and other psychological information of was collected. Structural equation modeling was performed to delineate the internal relationship between variables. Results: The hypothetical structural equation model exhibited acceptable model fit among female migrant manufacturing workers (χ2 = 11.635, df = 2, χ2/df = 5.82, p = 0.003, RMSEA = 0.090, CFI = 0.972, SRMR = 0.020). Job stress was directly associated with mood states and interpersonal needs; Psychological adaptation was directly associated with mood states and indirectly associated with interpersonal needs; Bootstrapping tests demonstrated mediation effect of mood states in the way from psychological adaptation to interpersonal needs. Conclusion: Female migrant manufacturing workers who suffered stress from job and the process of psychological adaptation may have worse mood states and workers with worse mood states are more likely to develop unmet interpersonal needs, a proximal factor of suicidal ideation.

Diet is one of the most important ways to intervene and promote the health of older adults and reduce all-cause mortality. This study aimed to investigate the association between dietary patterns and all-cause mortality in the Chinese old. This study involved 11,958 subjects aged 65–116 years in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) from 2008 to 2018. Dietary patterns were derived from principal component analysis (PCA) with varimax rotation. Four dietary patterns were derived: the ‘milk–egg–sugar pattern’, ‘carnivorous pattern’, ‘healthy pattern’, and ‘northeastern pattern’. Cox proportional hazard models were built for males and females separately to estimate the relationship between different dietary patterns and all-cause mortality. After adjusting for all covariates, the milk–egg–sugar pattern played a reverse role in mortality risk in males and females in different quartiles. In the carnivorous pattern, only males in the fourth quartile were observed to have a significantly reduced mortality risk (HR = 0.84 (95% CI: 0.77–0.93)). Both genders benefited from the healthy pattern, which consistently lowered mortality risk across all quartiles (males: HR = 0.87 (95% CI: 0.84–0.89); females: HR = 0.95 (95% CI: 0.92–0.97)). The northeastern pattern also showed an inverse association with all-cause mortality in males (HR = 0.94 (95% CI: 0.92–0.97)) and females (HR = 0.96 (95% CI: 0.93–0.98)). This study showed the association between dietary patterns and all-cause mortality in the Chinese old, which is significant for further quantitative studies.

Diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes (T2D), poses an unprecedented challenge to global public health. Hydration status also plays a fundamental role in human health, especially in people with T2D, which is often overlooked. This study aimed to explore the longitudinal associations between hydration status and the risk of T2D among the Chinese population. This study used data from the large community-based Kailuan cohort, which included adults who attended physical examinations from 2006 to 2007 and were followed until 2020. A total of 71,526 participants who eventually met the standards were divided into five hydration-status groups based on their levels of urine specific gravity (USG). Multivariable and time-dependent Cox proportional hazards models were employed to evaluate the associations of baseline and time-dependent hydration status with T2D incidence. Restricted cubic splines (RCS) analysis was used to examine the dose–response relationship between hydration status and the risk of T2D. Over a median 12.22-year follow-up time, 11,804 of the participants developed T2D. Compared with the optimal hydration-status group, participants with dehydration and severe dehydration had a significantly increased risk of diabetes, with adjusted hazard ratios (95% CI) of 1.30 (1.04–1.63) and 1.38 (1.10–1.74). Time-dependent analyses further confirmed the adverse effects of impending dehydration, dehydration, and severe dehydration on T2D incidence by 16%, 26%, and 33% compared with the reference group. Inadequate hydration is significantly associated with increased risks of T2D among Chinese adults. Our findings provided new epidemiological evidence and highlighted the potential role of adequate hydration status in the early prevention of T2D development.

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic increases the risk of psychological problems, especially for the infected population. Sleep disturbance and feelings of defeat and entrapment are well-documented risk factors of anxiety symptoms. Exploring the psychological mechanism of the development of anxiety symptoms is essential for effective prevention. This study aimed to examine the mediating effects of entrapment and defeat in the association between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms among asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers in Shanghai, China. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to April, 2022. Participants were 1,283 asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers enrolled from the Ruijin Jiahe Fangcang Shelter Hospital, Shanghai (59.6% male; mean age = 39.6 years). Questionnaire measures of sleep disturbance, entrapment, defeat, anxiety symptoms, and background characteristics were obtained. A mediation model was constructed to test the mediating effects of entrapment and defeat in the association between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms. Results The prevalence rates of sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms were 34.3% and 18.8%. Sleep disturbance was positively associated with anxiety symptoms (OR [95%CI] = 5.013 [3.721–6.753]). The relationship between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms (total effect: Std. Estimate = 0.509) was partially mediated by entrapment (indirect effect: Std. Estimate = 0.129) and defeat (indirect effect: Std. Estimate = 0.126). The mediating effect of entrapment and defeat accounted for 50.3% of the association between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms. Conclusion Sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms were prevalent among asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers. Entrapment and defeat mediate the association between sleep disturbance and anxiety symptoms. More attention is needed to monitoring sleep conditions and feelings of defeat and entrapment to reduce the risk of anxiety.

Abstract We investigate the possibility of the enhancement of parity-violation signal in bouncing cosmology. Specifically, we are interested in deciding which phase should generate the most significant parity-violation signals. We find that the dominant contribution comes from the bouncing phase, while the contraction phase has a smaller contribution. Therefore, bouncing cosmology can enhance the parity-violation signals during the bouncing phase. Moreover, since the bouncing phase has the highest energy scale in bouncing cosmology, we can also probe new physics at this scale by studying the parity-violation effect.

Background: Until now, there have been no randomized controlled trials directly evaluating the efficacy of high-dose ilaprazole-amoxicillin dual therapy (HT) in comparison to other standard treatments for H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori) infection. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of HT with bismuth quadruple therapy (BQT) as an initial treatment for H. pylori.Methods: This single-center, prospective, randomized clinical controlled trial recruited 225 consecutive patients. They were assigned to either HT group (ilaprazole, 10 mg, twice daily; amoxicillin 1,000 mg, three times daily) or BQT group (compound bismuth aluminate granules, 2.6 g, three times daily; ilaprazole, 5 mg, twice daily; amoxicillin, 1,000 mg, twice daily; clarithromycin, 500 mg, twice daily) for 14 days. The 13C-urea breath test assessed eradication success 4 weeks after treatment. The primary outcome focused on the eradication rate, with secondary outcomes including safety and compliance.Results: From February 2023 to March 2023, 228 subjects were screened, and 225 were randomized. The HT and BQT groups showed eradication rates of 76.3% and 61.3% (p = 0.015) both by intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis and per-protocol (PP) analysis. HT was associated with fewer adverse events than BQT (27.2% vs. 81.8%, p = 0.002). The most commonly reported adverse events was bitter taste of mouth (3.5% vs. 60.4%, p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in compliance between the two groups (89.5% vs. 92.8%, p = 0.264).Conclusion: The 14-day HT treatment demonstrates better efficacy in H. pylori eradication treatment and improved safety and compliance compared to BQT. BackgroundThis study aimed to investigate putative causal effects between constipation and stroke using bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.MethodsBased on the cross-sectional study, logistic regression models were developed to assess the association between constipation and stroke prevalence. Subsequently, genome-wide association studies statistics were employed to perform MR analysis between constipation and stroke, as well as its subtypes. The inverse variance weighting (IVW) method was the primary method, complemented by four additional methods, namely weighted median, weighted mode, simple mode, and MR-Egger regression. Cochran’s Q test, MR-Egger intercept test, MR Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier, and MR Steiger test were performed to assess heterogeneity and pleiotropy effects.ResultsConstipation was associated with a greater risk of stroke even after adjusting for all covariates in logistic regression [odds ratio (OR) = 1.46, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.01–2.09, p = 0.042]. IVW MR analysis revealed that constipation affected large artery atherosclerosis (LAS; IVW OR = 1.5, 95% CI = 1.07–2.104, p = 0.019). No significant or suggestive association was observed with the risk of stroke or its various subtypes in MR analysis. Meanwhile, reverse MR analysis revealed no significant causal relationship between stroke or other stroke subtypes and constipation. The results of sensitivity analyses revealed no significant horizontal pleiotropy affecting causal estimates.ConclusionWhile cross-sectional studies have established that constipation increases the risk of stroke, this two-sample bidirectional MR analysis revealed a positive correlation between constipation and LAS. However, no such correlation was observed between constipation and stroke, including its various subtypes.

BackgroundOsteoporosis represents a significant health concern as a widespread metabolic bone condition. In this study, we aim to utilize path analysis to examine the intricate relationships among demographic information, Health Belief Model (HBM) constructs and osteoporosis preventive behavior among Shanghai residents over 40 years of age.MethodsA multi-center population study was conducted in 20 volunteer communities in Shanghai, China. Out of the 2,000 participants who volunteered, 1,903 completed the field survey.Results56.0% of participants were females. Their mean age was 63.64 ± 10.30 years. The self-efficacy score among females (42.27 ± 15.82) was also significantly higher than that among males (40.68 ± 15.20). in the pathway analysis. In the path analysis preventive behaviors were significantly predicted by education (β = 0.082, p < 0.001), knowledge (β = 0.132, p < 0.001) and self-efficacy (β = 0.392, p < 0.001).ConclusionsThis study highlights the importance of gender, education, knowledge and self-efficacy in promoting OP preventive behaviors using the Health Belief Model. The findings emphasize the need for tailored interventions to address the specific needs of different demographic groups.

Background and purpose: Predicting tumour response would be useful for selecting patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) for organ preservation strategies. We aimed to develop and validate a prediction model for T downstaging (ypT0-2) in LARC patients after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and to identify those who may benefit from consolidation chemotherapy. Materials and methods: cT3-4 LARC patients at three tertiary medical centers from January 2012 to January 2019 were retrospectively included, while a prospective cohort was recruited from June 2021 to March 2022. Eight filter (principal component analysis, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, partial least-squares discriminant analysis, random forest)-classifier (support vector machine, logistic regression) models were established to select radiomic features. A nomogram combining radiomics and significant clinical features was developed and validated by calibration curve and decision curve analysis. Interaction test was conducted to investigate the consolidation chemotherapy benefits. Results: A total of 634 patients were included (426 in training cohort, 174 in testing cohort and 34 in prospective cohort). A radiomic prediction model using partial least-squares discriminant analysis and a support vector machine showed the best performance (AUC: 0.832 [training]; 0.763 [testing]). A nomogram combining radiomics and clinical features showed significantly better prognostic performance (AUC: 0.842 [training]; 0.809 [testing]) than the radiomic model. The model was also tested in the prospective cohort with AUC 0.727. High-probability group (score > 81.82) may have potential benefits from ≥ 4 cycles consolidation chemotherapy (OR: 4.173, 95 % CI: 0.953–18.276, p = 0.058, pinteraction = 0.021). Conclusion: We identified and validated a model based on multicenter pre-treatment radiomics to predict ypT0-2 in cT3-4 LARC patients, which may facilitate individualised treatment decision-making for organ-preservation strategies and consolidation chemotherapy.

The objective of this study was to investigate the cellulose degradation rate (CDR) and lignin degradation rate (LDR) of Codonopsis pilosula straw (CPS) and the optimal fermentation parameters for mixed fungal fermentation. Single-factor tests were used to study the effects of the fungal ratio (Trichoderma reesei: Coprinus comatus), fungal inoculum, corn flour content, and fermentation time on the degradation rate of cellulose and lignin. Based on the results of this experiment, the optimal fermentation factors were identified, and the effects of various factors and their interactions on the degradation rates of cellulose and lignin were further evaluated using the response surface method. The quadratic polynomial mathematical model of degradation rates of the cellulose and lignin in CPS by mixed fungus fermentation was established using Design Expert software v8.0.6. Under the optimal parameters for fungal fermentation of CPS straw (fungal ratio 4:6, fungal inoculum 8%, corn flour content 10%, fermentation time of 15 d), the CDR and LDR reached 13.65% and 10.73%, respectively. Collectively, the mixed fungal fermentation of CPS resulted in decreased lignin and cellulose content, better retention of nutrients, and enhanced fermentation quality. The results of this study indicate that fermentation using Trichoderma reesei and Coprinus comatus is a productive method for straw degradation, providing a theoretical basis for the development of CPS as feed.

IntroductionAssessing the likelihood of engaging in high-risk sexual behavior can assist in delivering tailored educational interventions. The objective of this study was to identify the most effective algorithm and assess high-risk sexual behaviors within the last six months through the utilization of machine-learning models.MethodsThe survey conducted in the Longhua District CDC, Shenzhen, involved 2023 participants who were employees of 16 different factories. The data was collected through questionnaires administered between October 2019 and November 2019. We evaluated the model's overall predictive classification performance using the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. All analyses were performed using the open-source Python version 3.9.12.ResultsAbout a quarter of the factory workers had engaged in risky sexual behavior in the past 6 months. Most of them were Han Chinese (84.53%), hukou in foreign provinces (85.12%), or rural areas (83.19%), with junior high school education (55.37%), personal monthly income between RMB3,000 (US$417.54) and RMB4,999 (US$695.76; 64.71%), and were workers (80.67%). The random forest model (RF) outperformed all other models in assessing risky sexual behavior in the past 6 months and provided acceptable performance (accuracy 78%; sensitivity 11%; specificity 98%; PPV 63%; ROC 84%).DiscussionMachine learning has aided in evaluating risky sexual behavior within the last six months. Our assessment models can be integrated into government or public health departments to guide sexual health promotion and follow-up services.

ObjectiveThis longitudinal study aimed to examine the association of intrinsic motivation, parental physical activity, and parental support with physical activity maintenance and increase among children and adolescents.MethodsA sample of 2,424 children and adolescents in Shanghai, China participated in the two-wave survey before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The questionnaire measured children and adolescents’ physical activity and intrinsic motivation, as well as their parental physical activity and support (concern for their child and co-activity with their child). Multivariable logistic regressions were performed by groups to examine the associations between these factors and physical activity change.ResultsMost children and adolescents exhibited a decline in physical activity participation during the pandemic, as indicated by a mere 15.0 and 8.0% of individuals maintaining and increasing their pre-pandemic levels, respectively. Among the initially active participants, perceived self-choice [OR = 1.341 (95%CI: 1.173–1.533)] and parental concern [OR = 1.922 (95%CI: 1.204–3.068)] predicted maintained physical activity. Increased physical activity was predicted by perceived enjoyment [OR = 1.193 (95%CI: 1.046–1.362)] and parental co-activity (OR = 1.995 [95%CI: 1.095–3.633]).ConclusionThis study provides longitudinal evidence that intrinsic motivation and parental support can have a positive impact when physical activity levels change significantly. Effective interventions targeting multilevel factors are needed to maintain or increase children and adolescents’ physical activity.

We aimed to evaluated the association between work stress and mental health among PHWs, and explore the mediating roles of social support and self-efficacy.MethodsA large-scale cross-sectional survey was conducted among 3,809 PHWs from all 249 community health centers in 16 administrative districts throughout Shanghai, China. Abstract Background While an important surgical landmark of the dentate line has been established for locally advanced lower rectal cancer (LALRC), the prognostic significance of dentate line invasion (DLI) has not been well defined. This study aimed to explore the impact of DLI on prognosis in LALRC patients with anal sphincter involvement after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery. Abstract Background Circular RNA (circRNA) has been proved to be an important molecular target for cancer treatment. However, the function and molecular mechanism of circ_0000808 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are still unclear. Methods Quantitative real-time PCR was used to detect the expression of circ_0000808, miR-1827, and solute carrier family 1 member 5 (SLC1A5). Cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion were measured by cell counting kit 8 assay, colony formation assay, EdU staining, flow cytometry, wound healing assay, and transwell assay. The protein expression was measured by Western blot analysis. Dual-luciferase reporter assay and RIP assay were used to investigate the interactions between miR-1827 and circ_0000808 or SLC1A5. Cell glutamine metabolism was assessed by determining glutamine uptake, glutamate production, and α-ketoglutarate production. Xenograft mouse model was used to assess the in vivo effects of circ_0000808. Results Circ_0000808 expression was upregulated in NSCLC tissues and cancer cells, and its silencing inhibited NSCLC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and led to apoptosis. Further results confirmed that circ_0000808 interacted with miR-1827 to positively regulate SLC1A5. The rescue experiments showed that miR-1827 inhibitor reversed the suppressive effect of circ_0000808 knockdown on the malignant behaviors of NSCLC cells. Also, SLC1A5 overexpression abolished the inhibition effect of miR-1827 on NSCLC cell progression. In addition, circ_0000808/miR-1827/SLC1A5 axis positively regulated the glutamine metabolism process in NSCLC cells. Moreover, circ_0000808 knockdown reduced the NSCLC tumor growth in vivo. Conclusion In summary, our data showed that circ_0000808 enhanced the progression of NSCLC by promoting glutamine metabolism through the miR-1827/SLC1A5 axis.

Abstract Explorations of the violation of null energy condition (NEC) in cosmology could enrich our understanding of the very early universe and the related gravity theories. Although a fully stable NEC violation can be realized in the “beyond Horndeski” theory, it remains an open question whether a violation of the NEC is allowed by some fundamental properties of UV-complete theories or the consistency requirements of effective field theory (EFT). We investigate the tree-level perturbative unitarity for stable NEC violations in the contexts of both Galileon and “beyond Horndeski” genesis cosmology, in which the universe is asymptotically Minkowskian in the past. We find that the constraints of perturbative unitarity imply that we may need some unknown new physics below the cut-off scale of the EFT other than that represented by the “beyond Horndeski” operators.

Abstract Background Ganglioneuromas (GNs) arise from the Schwann cells, ganglion cells, and neuronal tissues, and are extremely rare, slow-growing, benign tumors. GN has usually grown very large when it is diagnosed since no specific clinical symptoms or laboratory findings indicating GN are available, especially when it occurs in the retroperitoneal space. Total resection of the tumor is the recommended treatment. Case summary We present the imaging and pathological findings of a giant adrenal GN in a child. A 7-year-old boy suffered from nausea and postprandial vomiting for 1 week with no precipitating factors. There was no family history of any disease, and the boy did not suffer from any disease in the past. Biochemical examination showed normal results. Physical examination showed an immobilized palpable mass in the left abdominal area. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a 13 cm × 10 cm solid mass in the retroperitoneal space. The mass showed slight and heterogeneous enhancement after injection of a contrasting agent. The mass was surgically resected locally to address the embedded abdominal vessels, and the histopathological and immunohistochemical diagnosis of the mass was GN. After the surgery, the symptoms of nausea and vomiting were relieved, and no complications occurred. Conclusion GN should be considered when a child presents with a giant retroperitoneal hypodense mass and the mass presents uneven and delayed enhancement. Histopathology is the golden standard for the diagnosis of GN. Currently, surgical excision is the optimal treatment.

Abstract Background To investigate the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of apatinib delivered during and after intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods Patients with unresectable HCC who were not eligible for radiofrequency ablation (RFA), transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE), or residual/ recurrent after the prior local treatment were enrolled. Patients were scheduled to be treated with IMRT at 50–60 Gy/25–30 fractions. Oral apatinib tablets were administered concurrently with IMRT and continued thereafter. We used a 3 + 3 dose-escalation design, with three dose levels of apatinib (250, 500, and 750 mg). Grade 3 or more severe adverse events (AEs) were defined as dose-limiting toxicities (DLTs). The treatment response was calculated using the Modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours. Results Nine patients with Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer Stage C were included. One patient withdrew from the apatinib 250 mg group and another patient was added. No DLTs occurred in the apatinib 250 mg group. Five patients were included in the apatinib 500 mg group, and 2 cases of DLT (grade 3 leukopenia) were found among them. Dose escalation was terminated and the MTD was determined to be 250 mg. Common grade 1–2 AEs included fatigue, hypertension, dizziness, bone marrow suppression, and hyperbilirubinemia. The median follow-up time for all patients was 16.0 months. Three patients achieved complete response and another three achieved partial response. The objective response rate was 6/9 (66.7%), and the disease control rate was 9/9 (100%). Three patients relapsed out of the radiation field. The median progression-free survival was 17.0 months, and the median overall survival was 16.7 months. Conclusions When combined with IMRT, apatinib 250 mg daily was recommended for a phase 2 study of unresectable HCC. The antitumor activity of the combination treatment was encouraging. The safety and efficacy of apatinib combined with IMRT for unresectable HCC should be further investigated in future studies. Trial registration Registration No. ChiCTR1800018309 . Abstract Background Distinguishing strangulated bowel obstruction (StBO) from simple bowel obstruction (SiBO) still poses a challenge for emergency surgeons. We aimed to construct a predictive model that could distinctly discriminate StBO from SiBO based on the degree of bowel ischemia. Methods The patients diagnosed with intestinal obstruction were enrolled and divided into SiBO group and StBO group. Binary logistic regression was applied to identify independent risk factors, and then predictive models based on radiological and multi-dimensional models were constructed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the area under the curve (AUC) were calculated to assess the accuracy of the predicted models. Via stratification analysis, we validated the multi-dimensional model in the prediction of transmural necrosis both in the training set and validation set. Results Of the 281 patients with SBO, 45 (16.0%) were found to have StBO, while 236(84.0%) with SiBO. The AUC of the radiological model was 0.706 (95%CI, 0.617–0.795). In the multivariate analysis, seven risk factors including pain duration ≤ 3 days (OR = 3.775), rebound tenderness (OR = 5.201), low-to-absent bowel sounds (OR = 5.006), low levels of potassium (OR = 3.696) and sodium (OR = 3.753), high levels of BUN (OR = 4.349), high radiological score (OR = 11.264) were identified. The AUC of the multi-dimensional model was 0.857(95%CI, 0.793–0.920). In the stratification analysis, the proportion of patients with transmural necrosis was significantly greater in the high-risk group (24%) than in the medium-risk group (3%). No transmural necrosis was found in the low-risk group. The AUC of the validation set was 0.910 (95%CI, 0.843–0.976). None of patients in the low-risk and medium-risk score group suffered with StBO. However, all patients with bowel ischemia (12%) and necrosis (24%) were resorted into high-risk score group. Conclusion The novel multi-dimensional model offers a useful tool for predicting StBO. Clinical management could be performed according to the multivariate score.

Abstract We investigate both the null energy condition (NEC) violating scenario and the c T -diminishing scenario for generating enhanced power spectrum of primordial gravitational waves (GWs) during inflation, where c T is the propagating speed of primordial GWs. Both of these two scenarios can be realized stably with theories beyond Horndeski, hence can be uniformly implemented within the framework of the effective field theory. We calculate the power spectrum of primordial GWs by assuming that the inflationary Universe undergoes three phases, where the violation of NEC or the diminishment of c T occurs in the intermediate phase. A template of the spectrum is given for the NEC-violating scenario. We also discuss the underlying relation and discrepancy between these two scenarios with a disformal transformation.

Objectives: This study aimed to prospectively investigate gender-specific relationship between hyperuricemia and all-cause mortality among Chinese older adults.Methods: The study was based on the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) 2008–2018, a prospective nationwide cohort of older adults in China. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for all-cause mortality. Restricted cubic splines (RCS) were conducted to explore the dose-response relationship between SUA levels and all-cause mortality.Results: For older women, compared to the participants in the third quartile of SUA level, those in the highest quartile of SUA was associated with significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality in the fully adjusted model (HR: 1.41, 95% CI: 1.03–1.92). No significant associations between SUA levels and all-cause mortality were observed in older men. IntroductionChildhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a hidden but serious public health issue that can lead to a series of behavioral consequences and health problems in adulthood. It has been well documented that transgender women (TGW) have a high prevalence of CSA victimization. Moreover, risky sexual behaviors are also widespread among TGW; nevertheless, research investigating the associations between CSA victimization and risky sexual behaviors in TGW represents a gap in the literature.MethodsOur research was carried out mainly in Shenyang of China from November 2018 to January 2019. Sociodemographic characteristics, as well as information on participants’ HIV awareness and sexual behaviors, were collected through face-to-face interviews. The impact of CSA was examined through hierarchical logistic regression, adjusted for sociodemographic factors and HIV awareness.ResultsIn the sample of 247 adult TGW, 14.2% of them had a CSA history. In the previous 6 months, 30.8% of the participants reported condomless anal intercourse (CAI) and 38.5% of them had multiple sexual partners (MSP). The findings demonstrated that TGW with CSA history were more likely to take part in CAI (p = 0.001, OR = 4.252) or have MSP (p = 0.004, OR = 3.260) in adulthood. Furthermore, HIV knowledge was not a predictor of CAI or MSP, but higher HIV risk perception was associated with a greater probability of CAI.ConclusionTransgender women with a history of CSA were more prone to engage in CAI and have MSP in China.

ObjectiveCaspase activation and recruitment domain-containing protein 4 (NLRC4) is implicated in neuroinflammation. The aim of the study was to discern the potential ability of serum NLRC4 in assessment of prognosis after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).MethodsIn this prospective, observational study, serum NLRC4 levels were quantified in 148 acute supratentorial ICH patients and 148 controls. Severity was evaluated using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and hematoma volume, and poststroke 6-month functional outcome was estimated according to the modified Rankin Scale (mRS). Early neurologic deterioration (END) and 6-month poor outcome (mRS 3–6) were deemed as the two prognostic parameters. Multivariate models were established for investigating associations, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were configured to indicate predictive capability.ResultsPatients had substantially higher serum NLRC4 levels than controls (median, 363.2 pg/ml vs. 74.7 pg/ml). Serum NLRC4 levels had independent correlation with NIHSS scores [β, 0.308; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.088–0.520], hematoma volume (β, 0.527; 95% CI, 0.385–0.675), serum C-reactive protein levels (β, 0.288; 95% CI, 0.109–0.341) and 6-month mRS scores (β, 0.239; 95% CI, 0.100–0.474). Serum NLRC4 levels above 363.2 pg/ml were independently predictive of END (odds ratio, 3.148; 95% CI, 1.278–7.752) and 6-month poor outcome (odds ratio, 2.468; 95% CI, 1.036–5.878). Serum NLRC4 levels significantly distinguished END risk [area under ROC curve (AUC), 0.765; 95% CI, 0.685–0.846] and 6-month poor outcome (AUC, 0.795; 95% CI, 0.721–0.870). In terms of predictive ability for 6-month poor outcome, serum NLRC4 levels combined with NIHSS scores and hematoma volume was superior to NIHSS scores combined with hematoma volume, NIHSS scores and hematoma volume (AUC, 0.913 vs. 0.870, 0.864 and 0.835; all P < 0.05). Nomograms were built to reflect prognosis and END risk of combination models, where serum NLRC4, NIHSS scores and hematoma volume were enforced. Calibration curves confirmed stability of combination models.ConclusionsMarkedly raised serum NLRC4 levels following ICH, in close relation to illness severity, are independently associated with poor prognosis. Such results are indicative of the notion that determination of serum NLRC4 may aid in severity assessment and prediction of functional outcome of ICH patients.

Purpose: Auditory nerve injury is one of the most common nerve injury complications of skull base fractures. However, there is currently a lack of auxiliary examination methods for its direct diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to find a more efficient and accurate means of diagnosis for auditory nerve injury. Methods: Through retrospectively analyzing the results of brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) and high-resolution CT (HRCT) in 37 patients with hearing impairment following trauma from January 1, 2018 to July 31, 2020, the role of the two inspection methods in the diagnosis of auditory nerve injury was studied. Inclusion criteria were patient had a clear history of trauma and unilateral hearing impairment after trauma; while exclusion criteria were: (1) severe patient with a Glasgow coma scale score ≤5 because these patients were classified as severe head injury and admitted to the intensive care unit, (2) patient in the subacute stage admitted 72 h after trauma, and (3) patient with prior hearing impairment before trauma. According to Goodman's classification of hearing impairment, the patients were divided into low/medium/severe injury groups. In addition, patients were divided into HRCT-positive and negative groups for further investigation with their BAEP results. Abstract Lung cancer is one of the most common and lethal malignant tumors and the cases increased rapidly. Elevated chemoresistance during chemotherapy resistance remains a challenge. Hypoxia is one of the components that lead to chemoresistance. PVT1 participates in various tumor drug resistance and is associated with hypoxia conditions. The present study aimed to analyze the regulatory relationship of hypoxia and PVT1 and the mechanism of PVT1 in the hypoxia-induced chemoresistance process of lung cancer. The expression of PVT1 in lung cancer and adjacent tissues, and cell lines were analyzed using the TCGA database and qPCR. The regulatory relationship between hypoxia and PVT1 was validated and analyzed with qPCR, luciferase reporter system, and CHIP-qPCR. The role of PVT1 in chemoresistance ability induced by hypoxia was analyzed with CCK-8 assay and flow cytometry. The roles of PVT1, hypoxia, and chemoresistance were also analyzed with LC3-GFP transfection, WB, and IHC. Finally, the results were further validated in xenograft models. PVT1 is highly expressed in lung cancer and cell lines, and the expression of PVT1 is regulated by HIF-1α, and the luciferase reporter assay and CHIP-qPCR analysis indicated that HIF-1α could bind to the promoter region of PVT1 and regulate PVT1 expression. PVT1 participated in hypoxia-induced chemoresistance and induced higher viability and lower apoptosis rate by the autophagy signaling pathway via PVT1/miR-140-3p/ATG5 axis. All the findings were validated in the xenograft models. In conclusion, these results suggest that the expression of PVT1 is regulated by HIF-1α and participates in hypoxia-induced chemoresistance.
