The hydraulic system of vascular plants and its integrity is essential for plant survival. To transport water under tension, the walls of xylem conduits must approximate rigid pipes. Against this expectation, conduit deformation has been reported in the leaves of a few species and hypothesized to function as a 'circuit breaker' against embolism. Experimental evidence is lacking, and its generality is unknown. We demonstrated the role of conduit deformation in protecting the upstream xylem from embolism through experiments on three species and surveyed a diverse selection of vascular plants for conduit deformation in leaves. Conduit deformation in minor veins occurred before embolism during slow dehydration. When leaves were exposed to transient increases in transpiration, conduit deformation was accompanied by large water potential differences from leaf to stem and minimal embolism in the upstream xylem. In the three species tested, collapsible vein endings provided clear protection of upstream xylem from embolism during transient increases in transpiration. We found conduit deformation in diverse vascular plants, including 11 eudicots, ginkgo, a cycad, a fern, a bamboo, and a grass species, but not in two bamboo and a palm species, demonstrating that the potential for 'circuit breaker' functionality may be widespread across vascular plants.

Extreme drought events are becoming frequent globally, resulting in widespread plant mortality and forest dieback. Although savanna vegetation cover ~20% of the earth’s land area, their responses to extreme drought have been less studied than that of forests. Herein, we quantified branch dieback, individual mortality and the associated physiological responses of four evergreen shrubs (Tarenna depauperate Hutch., Maytenus esquirolii (H. Lév.) C.Y. Cheng, Murraya exotica L., Jasminum nudiflorum Lindl.) in a savanna ecosystem in Southwest China to an incidence of extreme drought during 2019 and 2020. We found that 80–100% of the individuals of these species exhibited branch dieback, whereas individual mortality was only found in T. depauperate (4.5%). All species showed high resistance to stem embolism (P50, water potential at 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity ranged from −5.62 to −8.6 MPa), whereas the stem minimum water potentials reached −7.6 to ca −10.0 MPa during the drought. The low water potential caused high native embolism levels (percentage loss of hydraulic conductivity (PLC) 23–65%) in terminal branches, and the remaining stems maintained 15–35% PLC at the end of the drought. Large within-individual variations in stem vulnerability to embolism were detected, and shedding of vulnerable branches could be a mechanism for shrubs to reduce water and carbon consumption. Overall, the content of total nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) and their components in the stem were generally comparable to or higher than those in the rainy season in three of the four species. Because the leaves were turgor-less for most time during the drought, high NSC levels during the drought could be due to recycling of NSC from dead branches or translocation from roots. Our results suggest high tolerance of savanna shrub species to extreme drought, which could be facilitated by high embolism resistance in some stems and shedding of vulnerable branches to maintain individual water and carbon balance.

Trees on the northern boundary of Asian tropics experience hot-humid and cool-dry seasons, but little is known about their seasonal dynamics in canopy physiology. We used a canopy crane to reach the canopy of nine tropical tree species and measured canopy leaf gas exchange, water status, and trunk sap flux during the hot-humid and cool-dry seasons in Xishuangbanna, China. We found that most tree species exhibited significant reductions in maximum photosynthetic rate (Amax), stomatal conductance (gsmax), predawn and midday leaf water potentials, and maximum sap flux density in the cool-dry season. Compared to the hot-humid season, Amax declined by 19–60%, and maximum water flux declined by −14% (an increase) to 42%. The cool-dry season decline in Amax of four species can be partly explained by an increased stomatal limitation (decreased gsmax and intercellular CO2 concentrations). Therefore, a predicted increase in drought in this region may decrease the carbon sequestration and productivity of these forests. We did not find a tradeoff between performance (Amax in the hot-humid season) and persistence through the cool-dry season; species with higher Amax in the hot-humid season did not show higher percent seasonal declines in the cool-dry season. Amax was significantly and positively associated with the trunk sap flux for both seasons, but the association was weaker in the cool-dry season. Thus, our results suggest that some tradeoffs and trait associations are environment dependent. Our results are important for understanding carbon and water fluxes of seasonal tropical forests and their responses to environmental changes.

Bamboos are arborescent monocotyledons that have no secondary growth, but can continually produce conduits with diameters appropriate to the current size of the plant. Here, we studied bamboo hydraulic architecture to address the mechanisms involved in compensating for the increase in hydraulic resistance during ontogeny. We measured the hydraulic weighted vessel diameters (Dh ) at different distances from the apex along the stem of Bambusa textilis. The hydraulic resistance of different components and individuals of different heights were quantified using the high-pressure flowmeter method. The Dh showed tip-to-base widening with a scaling exponent in the range of those reported for trees. Although theoretical hydraulic conductivity decreased from base-to-tip, leaf-specific conductivity did not change. Leaves contributed the most to the whole-shoot hydraulic resistance, followed by the leaf-bearing branches. Roots contributed c. 13% to whole-plant resistance. Interestingly, taller individuals showed lower whole-shoot resistance owing to an increased number of resistances in parallel (side-branches), while leaf-specific resistance was independent of plant size. Tip-to-base vessel widening and height-independent constant leaf-specific conductance could be mechanisms for hydraulic optimization in B. textilis. Similar patterns have also been found in woody plants with secondary growth, but this bamboo exhibits them without secondary growth.

Desiccation-tolerant (DT) plants can withstand dehydration to less than 0.1 g H2O g−1 dry weight. The mechanism for whole-plant recovery from severe dehydration is still not clear, especially for woody DT plants. In the present study, we evaluated the desiccation tolerance and mechanism of recovery for a potentially new woody resurrection plant Paraboea rufescens (Gesneriaceae). We monitored the leaf water status, leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and root pressure of potted P. rufescens during dehydration and rehydration, and we investigated the water content and chlorophyll fluorescence of P. rufescens leaves in the field during the dry season. After re-watering from a severely dehydrated state, leaf maximum quantum yield of photosystem II of P. rufescens quickly recovered to well-watered levels. Leaf water status and leaf hydraulic conductance quickly recovered to well-watered levels after re-watering, while leaf gas exchange traits also trended to recovery, but at a slower rate. The maximum root pressure in rehydrated P. rufescens was more than twice in well-watered plants. Our study identified P. rufescens as a new DT woody plant. The whole-plant recovery of P. rufescens from extreme dehydration is potentially associated with an increase of root pressure after rehydration. These findings provide insights into the mechanisms of recovery of DT plants from dehydration.

Leaf form (compound vs. simple) and habit (evergreen vs. deciduous) are key functional traits of trees to adapt to various climates and are vital in determining plant response to climate change. However, their association and climatic determinants remain uncertain, especially in East Asian forests in the largest monsoon region on earth. To fill these knowledge gaps, we compiled a dataset comprising 42 intact forests and over 2200 angiosperm tree species across China (spanning 30 latitudes and 47 longitudes). The geographical and climatic patterns of leaf form and habit were analyzed. The association between compound leaf and deciduousness was tested for tropical, subtropical and temperate climatic zones. We found that both the percentage of compound leaf (CT%) and deciduous tree species (DT%) increased with latitude and decreased with mean annual precipitation (MAP). For all forests, DT% was negatively related to mean annual temperature (MAT), whereas CT% was not. Nevertheless, both DT% and CT% increased with increasing MAT in the tropics, possibly owing to the high vapor pressure deficits (VPD) and canopy water deficits associated with high temperatures. A positive linear relationship between CT% and DT% was found across all forests and within different climatic zones except for temperate, and the intercept of the regression line was significantly higher in the tropics than in the subtropics. Overall, as supported by principal component analysis, deciduousness was negatively associated with both temperature and precipitation, while CT negatively with precipitation only across zones and positively with temperature in the tropics. Different relationships in different climatic zones suggest potentially different selective forces. Our findings provide novel insights into the linkage between leaf form and habit, as well as how climate shapes the landscape of broadleaf forests, which has important implications regarding the response of forest composition to climate change.

Vulnerability curves (VCs) describe the loss of hydraulic conductance against increasing xylem tension, providing valuable insights about the response of plant water transport to water stress. Techniques to construct VCs have been developed and modified continuously, but controversies continue. We compared VCs constructed using the bench-top dehydration (BD), air-injection-flow (AI), pneumatic-air-discharge (PAD), optical (OP) and X-ray-computed microtomography (MicroCT) methods for tropical trees and lianas with contrasting vessel lengths. The PAD method generated highly vulnerable VCs, the AI method intermediate VCs, whereas the BD, OP and MicroCT methods produced comparable and more resistant VCs. Vessel-length and diameter accounted for the overestimation ratio of vulnerability estimated using the AI but not the PAD method. Compared with directly measured midday embolism levels, the PAD and AI methods substantially overestimated embolism, whereas the BD, MicroCT and OP methods provided more reasonable estimations. Cut-open vessels, uncertainties in maximum air volume estimations, sample-length effects, tissue cracks and shrinkage together may impede the reliability of the PAD method. In conclusion, we validate the BD, OP and MicroCT methods for tropical plants, whereas the PAD and AI need further mechanistic testing. Therefore, applications of VCs in estimating plant responses to drought need to be cautious.

The oil soluble modified montmorillonite (MMT)/indium (In) composite nanoscale powders were prepared into four disperse systems by adding 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% to the base oil respectively. The friction properties of the 45 steel samples were tested by MMU-10G friction and wear testing machine, and the surface composition of the samples was analyzed by SEM and EDX. The mechanism that affects the tribological properties is compared and analyzed. The results show that the wear weight loss of the sample added with MMT/In nano powder is smaller than that in the base oil, and the average friction factor of the sample with 3% additions is 43.14% ,lower than that of the base oil, and the total wear is negative weightlessness.EDX analysis showed that the surface of the friction specimen was composed of Mg, Al and In repair membranes. The main mechanism of anti friction and friction reduction is that the composite powder will form a repair film on the surface of the friction pair during the friction process, and the repair layer can reduce the friction, compensate for the wear and play the role of resisting wear and reducing the effect of friction. With the increase of adding amount, the repair layer is gradually improved and the tribological performance is enhanced. But if the amount of addition is too high, the micro cutting and furrow effect of a large number of hard particles on the matrix and the new film will be greater than the compensation effect of the repair film, making the antiwear and antifriction properties decrease.

In higher plants, photosystems II and I are found in grana stacks and unstacked stroma lamellae, respectively. To connect them, electron carriers negotiate tortuous multi-media paths and are subject to macromolecular blocking. Why does evolution select an apparently unnecessary, inefficient bipartition? Here we systematically explain this perplexing phenomenon. We propose that grana stacks, acting like bellows in accordions, increase the degree of ultrastructural control on photosynthesis through thylakoid swelling/shrinking induced by osmotic water fluxes. This control coordinates with variations in stomatal conductance and the turgor of guard cells, which act like an accordion's air button. Globally, the changing and interacting effects of temperature and precipitation are anticipated to influence the fitness of specialty crops. Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) is an important crop in the Northeastern United States. In this study, four plausible precipitation scenarios were developed to be representative of current and future growing season precipitation patterns. Using a precipitation simulator, we tested these scenarios on potted-day-neutral strawberries. This study generated four primary results. (1) Though some treatments received different amounts of precipitation, little difference was observed in soil volumetric water content or temperature. Treatments designed to simulate future conditions were more likely to have higher nitrate-in-leachate (N-leachate) concentrations than those designed to simulate current conditions. (2) Neither total precipitation nor seasonable distribution were associated with foliar or root disease pressure. (3) While there was a slightly higher chance that photosynthesis would be higher in drier conditions, little difference was observed in the effects on chlorophyll concentration and no water stress was detected in any treatment. (4) Leaf biomass was likely more affected by total rather than seasonal distribution of precipitation, but the interaction between changing rainfall distribution and seasonal totals is likely to be an important driver of root biomass development in the future.

Water use efficiency (WUE) is a key physiological trait in studying plant carbon and water relations. However, the determinants of WUE across a large geographical scale are not always clear, limiting our capacity to predict WUE in response to future global climate change. We propose that tree WUE is influenced by calcium (Ca) availability and precipitation. In addition, although it is well-known that transpiration is the major driving force for passive nutrient uptake, the linkage between these two processes has not been well-established. Because Ca uptake is an apoplastic and passive process that purely relies on transpiration, and there is no translocation once assimilated, we further developed a theoretical model to quantify the relationship between tree Ca accumulation and WUE using soil-to-plant calcium ratio (SCa/BCa) and tree WUE derived from δ13C. We tested our theoretical model and predicted relationships using three common tree species across their native habitats in Northern China, spanning 2300 km and a controlled greenhouse experiment with soil Ca concentrations manipulated. We found that tree WUE was negatively related to precipitation of the growing season (GSP) and positively with soil Ca. A multiple regression model and a path analysis suggested a higher contribution of soil Ca to WUE than GSP. As predicted by our theoretical model, we found a positive relationship between WUE and SCa/BCa across their distribution ranges in all three tree species and in the controlled experiment for one selected species. This relationship suggests a tight coupling between water and Ca uptake and the potential use of SCa/BCa to indicate WUE. A negative relationship between SCa/BCa and GSP also suggests a possible decrease in tree Ca accumulation efficiency in a drier future in Northern China.

We derived a steady-state model of whole root pressure generation through the combined action of all parallel segments of fine roots. This may be the first complete analytical solution for root pressure, which can be applied to complex roots/shoots.The osmotic volume of a single root is equal to that of the vessel lumen in fine roots and adjacent apoplastic spaces. Water uptake occurs via passive osmosis and active solute uptake (, osmol s−1), resulting in the osmolal concentration Cr (mol·kg−1 of water) at a fixed osmotic volume. Solute loss occurs via two passive processes: radial diffusion of solute Km(Cr-Csoil), where Km is the diffusional constant and Csoil is the soil-solute concentration) from fine roots to soil and mass flow of solute and water into the whole plant from the end of the fine roots.The proposed model predicts the quadratic function of root pressure , where b and c are the functions of plant hydraulic resistance, soil water potential, solute flux, and gravitational potential.The present study investigates the theoretical dependencies of Pr on the factors detailed above and demonstrates the root pressure-mediated distribution of water through the hydraulic architecture of a 6.8-m-tall bamboo shoot.One sentence SummaryAn analytical solution for root pressure is derived and illustrated by applying it to the measured hydraulic architecture of a 7-meter bamboo shoot.

In this work, a pyrene-based porous organic polymer (Py-POP) with strong electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emission was synthesized and used to fabricate an ECL sensor for the extra-sensitive detection of microRNA-155. The ECL intensity of the Py-POP prepared by tetra(p-aminophenyl)methane (TAPM) and 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)pyrene (TFPPy) was about 3.1 times that of TFPPy aggregates, which was primarily ascribed to the elimination of the effect of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) by increasing the distance between ACQ luminophores (pyrene cores) in Py-POP. Meanwhile, the strong covalent connections between 1,3,6,8-tetraphenylpyrene (TPPy) and tetraphenylmethane (TPM) units in the rigid framework of Py-POP could partly block the intramolecular motion of TPPy and TPM, which reduced the non-radiative decay and thus further improved the ECL emission. Furthermore, the hydrophobic porous structure of Py-POP was beneficial to the enrichment of lipophilic tripropylamine (TPrA) coreactants in pores of Py-POP, which greatly shortened the electron migration distance between TPrA coreactants and pyrene luminophores on the pore walls of Py-POP, thereby also enhancing the ECL intensity. By using the Py-POP as a new ECL tag and with the help of the strand displacement processes and target recycling, the fabricated ECL biosensor had a sensitive response for microRNA-155 from 1 fM to 1 nM and a detection limit of 0.326 fM. Overall, this work provided a new and feasible strategy to surmount the ACQ effect for enhancing ECL emission, which not only paved a new way to exploit high-performance ECL materials for fabricating extra-sensitive sensors but also broadened the application of POPs in bioanalysis and ECL fields.

A few severe drought events occurred in the Northeast (NE) USA in recent decades and caused significant economic losses, but the temporal pattern of drought incidents and their impacts on agricultural systems have not been well assessed. Here, we analyzed historical changes and patterns of drought using a drought index (standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index (SPEI)), and assessed drought impacts on remotely sensed vegetation indices (enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)) and production (yield) of the wild blueberry fields in Maine, USA. We also analyzed the impact of short- and long-term water conditions of the growing season on the wild blueberry vegetation condition and production. No significant changes in the SPEI were found in the past 71 years, despite a significant warming pattern. There was also a significant relationship between the relatively long-term SPEI and the vegetation indices (EVI and NDVI), but not the short-term SPEI (one year). This suggests that the crop vigor of wild blueberries is probably determined by water conditions over a relatively long term. There were also significant relationships between 1-year water conditions (SPEI) and yield for a non-irrigated field, and between 4-year-average SPEI and the yield of all fields in Maine. The vegetation indices (EVI and NDVI) are not good predictors of wild blueberry yield, possibly because wild blueberry yield does not only depend on crop vigor, but also on other important variables such as pollination. We also compared an irrigated and a non-irrigated wild blueberry field at the same location (Deblois, Maine) where we found that irrigation decoupled the relationship between the SPEI and NDVI or EVI.

Fog water is generally considered to be an important water source for epiphytes in cloud forests because they cannot directly access ground-level water sources. However, the water use proportions of potential water sources and water use efficiency of epiphytes in the subtropical montane cloud forests (MCF) remain to be further explored. In this study, we investigated the water use pattern in the dry season and the intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi) of four epiphyte groups (i.e., epiphytic lichens, epiphytic bryophytes, epiphytic ferns, and epiphytic seed plants) using stable isotope (δ2H, δ18O, and δ13C) techniques. Our results indicated that the water sources of epiphytes were significantly different among groups and species. The contribution proportions of fog water to epiphytic lichens, epiphytic bryophytes, epiphytic ferns, and epiphytic seed plants were 83.2%, 32.7%, 38.8% and 63.7%, respectively. Epiphytic lichens and epiphytic seed plants mainly depended on fog water whereas the epiphytic bryophytes and epiphytic ferns relied on both fog water and humus. This may be due to their differences in morphological and structural traits (e.g., thallus or leaves, rhizoid or roots). Additionally, the difference in WUEi was also significant among epiphyte groups and species, which could be related to their different water acquisition patterns. In conclusion, our study reveals the differentiation of water utilization in epiphytes and confirms the importance of fog water for epiphytes during the dry season.

Desiccation-tolerant (DT) plants can withstand dehydration to less than 0.1 g H

Tree trunks not only provide physical support for canopy leaves but also supply and store water for transpiration. However, the relationships between trunk hydraulic properties and canopy leaf physiology in tropical trees are not well-understood. In this study we concurrently measured morning and midday canopy leaf photosynthesis (A), stomatal conductance (gs), and leaf water potentials (ΨL) in 40 tropical trees representing 14 species at the beginning of the rainy season in Xishuangbanna, Southwest China. We also measured trunk sapwood capacitance (C), wood density, and sap flux density to assess their association with canopy leaf physiology. Among the 14 studied species, only three and four species did not show a significant midday reduction in A and gs respectively. The diurnally maximum A and gs were significantly positively related to sapwood hydraulic capacitance, maximum sap flux density (midday), and sap flux density at 11:00. Those species with lower wood density and higher C showed a lower reduction in ΨL at midday, whereas, species with high C, and large values of maximum sap flux density also showed high carbon assimilation at midday. Our results provide new insights into the close coordination between canopy physiology and trunk sapwood hydraulic properties in tropical trees.

Climate change will impact all plant physiological processes including water transport, photosynthesis, and nutrient assimilation. How these processes are coordinated in response to climate change is not fully understood. Here we tested how these processes will respond to elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]) and temperatures for two herbaceous species (an invasive and a native Eupatorium species in East Asia; family Asteraceae) and whether these processes are coordinated using a controlled experiment. We also investigated the differences between these two species, and the structural basis for changes in physiology. Leaf photosynthetic capacity (Amax, measured under ambient conditions) increased significantly in the native species, while that of the invasive species did not change under elevated [CO2] and temperatures. The leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) of both species tended to increase under elevated temperatures and [CO2], with that of the native species increasing to a greater extent. Changes in Kleaf and Amax were coordinated, and Kleaf was closely associated with leaf minor vein density across treatments. The increased photosynthetic capacity of the native species was probably related to an increased N investment in photosynthesis; its leaf N decreased but chlorophyll concentration increased inviting detailed studies in N partitioning. No coordination between water use (water transport, stomatal conductance, and water use efficiency) and leaf tissue nutrient (N, P) concentrations was found, probably owing to the active control in nutrient uptake. Thus, photosynthesis is coordinated with water transport in response to climate change, while the coordination between water use and nutrient accumulation can be absent due to active control. Our results also suggest that global climate change will not necessarily fuel more positive responses in invasive plants than native plants.

A facile strategy to design a highly efficient electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET) system was proposed by using an AIEgen-based 2D ultrathin metal–organic layer (MOL) to coordinatively immobilize energy donors and acceptors simultaneously, in which the distance between adjacent donor–acceptor pairs was precise and short for obtaining high ECL-RET efficiency.

Hydraulic failure caused by severe drought contributes to aboveground dieback and whole-plant death. The extent to which dieback or whole-plant death can be predicted by plant hydraulic traits has rarely been tested among species with different leaf habits and/or growth forms. We investigated 19 hydraulic traits in 40 woody species in a tropical savanna and their potential correlations with drought response during an extreme drought event during the El Niño–Southern Oscillation in 2015. Plant hydraulic trait variation was partitioned substantially by leaf habit but not growth form along a trade-off axis between traits that support drought tolerance versus avoidance. Semi-deciduous species and shrubs had the highest branch dieback and top-kill (complete aboveground death) among the leaf habits or growth forms. Dieback and top-kill were well explained by combining hydraulic traits with leaf habit and growth form, suggesting integrating life history traits with hydraulic traits will yield better predictions.

Mangroves growing in tropical and subtropical intertidal zones face challenges from warming and altered rainfall patterns associated with global climate change. Intraspecific variation in hydraulic traits may allow a mangrove species to acclimate to novel climatic conditions, yet little is known regarding the potential for adaptive plasticity in these traits. In this study, we aimed to quantify the variation in plant hydraulic traits of two widespread mangrove species growing across a latitudinal gradient. We investigated the xylem hydraulic structure and function of Avicennia marina and Aegiceras corniculatum, across three sites spanning a latitudinal gradient of 17.45° in eastern Australia. We found that both species were highly resistant to xylem embolism and that there was significant intraspecific variation in hydraulic traits between sites. The highest embolism resistance and sapwood-specific hydraulic conductivity (KS) were found at the lowest latitude site that had the highest mean annual temperature and precipitation. A. marina showed no differences in vessel size and density among sites. It has other special features such as successive cambia enhancing its ability to adapt to a large environmental gradient. In contrast, A. corniculatum showed higher vessel densities at lower latitudes. There was a significant and positive correlation (R2 = 0.72, P &lt, 0.05) between KS and embolism resistance across species and sites, suggesting the absence of a tradeoff between hydraulic efficiency and safety. Both embolism resistance and KS were negatively correlated with wood density but positively with vessel wall reinforcement. This study reveals that these two widespread mangrove species were adapted to warmer climates by enhancing both hydraulic efficiency and safety.

Maine, USA is the largest producer of wild blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium Aiton), an important native North American fruit crop. Blueberry fields are mainly distributed in coastal glacial outwash plains which might not experience the same climate change patterns as the whole region. It is important to analyze the climate change patterns of wild blueberry fields and determine how they affect crop health so fields can be managed more efficiently under climate change. Trends in the maximum (Tmax), minimum (Tmin) and average (Tavg) temperatures, total precipitation (Ptotal), and potential evapotranspiration (PET) were evaluated for 26 wild blueberry fields in Downeast Maine during the growing season (May–September) over the past 40 years. The effects of these climate variables on the Maximum Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVImax) were evaluated using Remote Sensing products and Geographic Information System (GIS) tools. We found differences in the increase in growing season Tmax, Tmin, Tavg, and Ptotal between those fields and the overall spatial average for the region (state of Maine), as well as among the blueberry fields. The maximum, minimum, and average temperatures of the studied 26 wild blueberry fields in Downeast, Maine showed higher rates of increase than those of the entire region during the last 40 years. Fields closer to the coast showed higher rates of warming compared with the fields more distant from the coast. Consequently, PET has been also increasing in wild blueberry fields, with those at higher elevations showing lower increasing rates. Optimum climatic conditions (threshold values) during the growing season were explored based on observed significant quadratic relationships between the climate variables (Tmax and Ptotal), PET, and EVImax for those fields. An optimum Tmax and PET for EVImax at 22.4 °C and 145 mm/month suggest potential negative effects of further warming and increasing PET on crop health and productivity. These climate change patterns and associated physiological relationships, as well as threshold values, could provide important information for the planning and development of optimal management techniques for wild blueberry fields experiencing climate change.
