Abstract Photo-crosslinking polymerization stands as a fundamental pillar in the domains of chemistry, biology, and medicine. Yet, prevailing strategies heavily rely on ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) light to elicit in situ crosslinking. The inherent perils associated with UV radiation, namely the potential for DNA damage, coupled with the limited depth of tissue penetration exhibited by UV/Vis light, severely restrict the scope of photo-crosslinking within living organisms. Although near-infrared light has been explored as an external excitation source, enabling partial mitigation of these constraints, its penetration depth remains insufficient, particularly within bone tissues. In this study, we introduce an approach employing X-ray activation for deep-tissue hydrogel formation, surpassing all previous boundaries. Our approach harnesses a low-dose X-ray-activated persistent luminescent phosphor, triggering on demand in situ photo-crosslinking reactions and enabling the formation of hydrogels in male rats. A breakthrough of our method lies in its capability to penetrate deep even within thick bovine bone, demonstrating unmatched potential for bone penetration. By extending the reach of hydrogel formation within such formidable depths, our study represents an advancement in the field. This application of X-ray-activated polymerization enables precise and safe deep-tissue photo-crosslinking hydrogel formation, with profound implications for a multitude of disciplines.

Abstract Developing X-ray scintillators that are water-dispersible, compatible with polymeric matrices, and processable to flexible substrates is an important challenge. Herein, Tb3+-doped Na5Lu9F32 is introduced as an X-ray scintillating material with steady-state X-ray light yields of 15,800 photons MeV−1, which is generated as nanocrystals on halloysite nanotubes. The obtained product exhibits good water-dispersibility and highly sensitive luminescence to X-rays. It is deposited onto a polyurethane foam to afford a composite foam material with dose-dependent radioluminescence. Moreover, the product is dispersed into polymer matrixes in aqueous solution to prepare rigid or flexible scintillator screen for X-ray imaging. As a third example, it is incorporated multilayer hydrogels for information camouflage and multilevel encryption. Encrypted information can be recognized only by X-ray irradiation, while the false information is read out under UV light. Altogether, we demonstrate that the water-dispersible scintillators are highly promising for aqueous processing of radioluminescent, X-ray imaging, and information encrypting materials.

All-dielectric metasurfaces underpinned by the physics of bound states in the continuum (BICs) have surged interest due to their spectral selectivity and strong light confinement. In this work, We propose a compensation mechanism for SP-BIC with stable resonance wavelength and controllable Q-factor. Here we take metasurfaces consisting of four nano-square disks as an example to break the symmetry of the unit cell by both x-compensation and y-compensation, respectively, and the resonance wavelengths are stable. The results show that the four nanodisks are excited in two modes with x-compensation and y-compensation when only C2 symmetry is preserved, and in one mode with x-compensation and y-compensation when only σx symmetry is preserved. Multiple decomposition results show that the loop dipole and magnetic dipole dominate the modes that retain only C2 symmetry excitation. In contrast, the magnetic dipole dominates the mode that retains only the σx symmetry excitation. Both modes excited by the compensation mechanism have stable resonances with high q-factors under the condition of preserving only C2 symmetry or only σx symmetry. Metasurfaces realized by the compensation mechanism may find promising applications in enhanced light-matter interactions such as lasers, sensing, strong coupling, and nonlinear harmonic generation.

(1) Background: Cell proliferation (Ki-67) has important clinical value in the treatment and prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, current detection methods for Ki-67 are invasive and can lead to incorrect results. This study aimed to explore a deep learning classification model for the prediction of Ki-67 and the prognosis of NSCLC based on FDG-PET/CT images. (2) Methods: The FDG-PET/CT scan results of 159 patients with NSCLC confirmed via pathology were analyzed retrospectively, and the prediction models for the Ki-67 expression level based on PET images, CT images and PET/CT combined images were constructed using Densenet201. Based on a Ki-67 high expression score (HES) obtained from the prediction model, the survival rate of patients with NSCLC was analyzed using Kaplan–Meier and univariate Cox regression. (3) Results: The statistical analysis showed that Ki-67 expression was significantly correlated with clinical features of NSCLC, including age, gender, differentiation state and histopathological type. After a comparison of the three models (i.e., the PET model, the CT model, and the FDG-PET/CT combined model), the combined model was found to have the greatest advantage in Ki-67 prediction in terms of AUC (0.891), accuracy (0.822), precision (0.776) and specificity (0.902). Meanwhile, our results indicated that HES was a risk factor for prognosis and could be used for the survival prediction of NSCLC patients. (4) Conclusions: The deep-learning-based FDG-PET/CT radiomics classifier provided a novel non-invasive strategy with which to evaluate the malignancy and prognosis of NSCLC.

The synthesis of ladder-type 9,9′-bifluorenylidene-based conjugated polymer is reported. Unlike the typical synthetic strategy, the new designed ladder-type conjugated polymer is achieved via tandem Suzuki polymerization/Heck cyclization reaction in one-pot. In the preparation process, Suzuki polymerization reaction occurred first and then the intramolecular Heck cyclization followed smoothly under the same catalyst Pd(PPh3)4. The model reaction proved that the introduction of iodine (I) for this tandem reaction can effectively control the sequential bond-forming process and inhibit the additional competitive side reactions. Thus, small-molecule model compounds could be obtained in high yields. The successes of the synthesized small molecule and polymer compounds indicate that the Pd-catalyzed tandem reaction may be an effective strategy for improving extended π-conjugated materials.

In order to adapt to new situation of cascade hydropower enterprises (CHEs) participating in the joint market of day-ahead energy and frequency regulation (FR), a short-term optimal scheduling strategy for cascade hydropower plants (CPPs) is proposed. Firstly, the development situation of AGC in China is introduced and the CPPs’ AGC mode of participation in FR from the perspective of economy and solvability is analyzed. Secondly, for maximizing the revenue, the economic dispatching model of CPPs based on the two-part FR compensation mechanism is proposed, which combines the benefits of both the energy and FR. Finally, a two-stage optimization method that couples the load distribution among multi plants with the economic operation of a single plant is proposed for solving the model above. The experimental results show that the two-stage optimization method has good convergence and robustness in solving the proposed model, and compared with the single energy model, the total benefits of the proposed model increases by $ \$ $ 72935.6 (5.54%) through optimizing the distribution of electricity quantity and AGC capacity, which provides a new idea for cascade hydropower enterprises (CHEs) to explore market dividend and optimize market decision-making.

A new water-soluble pyrene-containing fluorescent polymer, 1-{3′-S-[poly(acryloyl ethylene diamine hydrochloride)-2′-methyl propionic acid]}propionyloxy hexyloxy pyrene (P3) with defined structure, was designed and synthesized using the click reaction between thiol and a carbon-carbon double bond. The intermediate products P1 (S-1-dodecyl-S′-[poly(N-Boc-acryloyl ethylene diamine)-2′-methyl propionic acid]trithiocarbonate) and AHP (1-(acryloyloxy hexyloxy)pyrene) were prepared via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and Williamson synthesis, respectively. Conjugating AHP with P1, P2 (1-{3′-S-[poly(N-butoxycarbonyl-acryloyl ethylene diamine)-2″-methyl propionic acid]} propionyloxy hexyloxy pyrene) was synthesized, adopting both the reduction reaction of a trithioester bond of P1 to thiol and the click reaction between thiol and the carbon-carbon double bond of AHP simultaneously. P3 was obtained by the deprotection of the resulting Boc-protected polymer (P2) with aqueous HCl. The experiment results showed that P2 exhibited a bright blue-violet emission band at approximately 387–429 nm. After deprotection, P3 displayed good solubility in water and not only exhibited a blue-violet fluorescence emission band at approximately 387–429 nm in aqueous solution but also had the similar photoluminescent spectra to those of AHP and P2 in dichloromethane. The fluorescence quantum yields of P2 in dilute tetrahydrofuran and P3 in a dilute aqueous solution were 0.44 and 0.39, respectively. This experiment provided a novel insight into the study of water-soluble fluorescent polymers.

Two isomer polymers, P3 and P6, with fully conjugated ladder structures are presented by simple synthetic routes. The well-defined structures of fully conjugated ladder polymers P3 and P6 were ensured by the high yields of every reaction step. The fully rigid ladder structures were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and photophysical test. Polymers P3 and P6 with bulky alkyl side chains exhibit good solution processability and desirable thermostable properties. After the intramolecular cyclization reaction, the band gaps of polymers P3 and P6 become lower (2.86 eV and 2.66 eV, respectively) compared with polymers P1 and P4. This initial study provides insight for the rational design of fully ladder-conjugated isomeric polymers with well-defined structures.

The dispatching of hydro-thermal system is a nonlinear programming problem with multiple constraints and high dimensions and the solution techniques of the model have been a hotspot in research. Based on the advantage of that the artificial bee colony algorithm (ABC) can efficiently solve the high-dimensional problem, an improved artificial bee colony algorithm has been proposed to solve DHTS problem in this paper. The improvements of the proposed algorithm include two aspects. On one hand, local search can be guided in efficiency by the information of the global optimal solution and its gradient in each generation. The global optimal solution improves the search efficiency of the algorithm but loses diversity, while the gradient can weaken the loss of diversity caused by the global optimal solution. On the other hand, inspired by genetic algorithm, the nectar resource which has not been updated in limit generation is transformed to a new one by using selection, crossover and mutation, which can ensure individual diversity and make full use of prior information for improving the global search ability of the algorithm. The two improvements of ABC algorithm are proved to be effective via a classical numeral example at last. Among which the genetic operator for the promotion of the ABC algorithm's performance is significant. The results are also compared with those of other state-of-the-art algorithms, the enhanced ABC algorithm has general advantages in minimum cost, average cost and maximum cost which shows its usability and effectiveness. The achievements in this paper provide a new method for solving the DHTS problems, and also offer a novel reference for the improvement of mechanism and the application of algorithms.

The novel boron-chelated π-conjugated polymers named as BF2-poly and BPh2-poly were synthesized by a feasible condensation-chelation strategy. First, conjugated polymers bearing Boc group were prepared by using palladium-catalyzed Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction. Then, conjugated polymers (poly-1) were obtained with high efficiency by removing the Boc group from Boc-poly. Last, boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BF3·Et2O) or triphenylboron (BPh3) chelated with poly-1 forming the target polymers. Furthermore, the boron-chelated polymers were characterized by UV−Vis absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and thermogravimetric analysis. As expected, fluorescences peaks at 520 nm and 592 nm were observed in diluted CH2Cl2. In addition, BF2-poly and BPh2-poly showed strong fluorescence at 545 nm and 601 nm in homogeneous solid state. The results coming from thermogravimetric analysis and cyclic voltammetry also revealed that the conjugated polymers have favorable electrochemical and thermostable properties.

Fully conjugated ladder copolymers have attracted considerable attention due to their unique fused-ring structure and optoelectronic properties. In this study, two fully conjugated ladder naphthalene diimide (NDI) copolymers, P(NDI-CZL) and P(NDI-TTL) with imine-bridged structures are presented in high yields. Both of the two copolymers have good solubility and high thermal stability. The corresponding compounds with the same structure as the copolymers were synthesized as model system. The yields for each step of the synthesis of the model compounds are higher than 95%. These results suggest that P(NDI-CZL) and P(NDI-TTL) can be synthesized successfully with fewer structural defects. The structures and optoelectronic properties of compounds and copolymers are investigated by NMR, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Both in solution and as a thin film, the two copolymers show two UV-vis absorption bands (around 300–400 nm and 400–750 nm) and a very weak fluorescence. The collective results suggest that the two fully conjugated ladder copolymers can be used as potential acceptor materials.

A series of novel hyperbranched poly[2-(α-d-mannopyranosyloxy) ethyl methacrylate-co-N,N’-methylenebisacrylamide] (HPManEMA-co-MBA) are synthesized via a reversible addition fragmentation polymerization (RAFT). The dosage ratios of linear and branch units are tuned to obtain different degree of branching (DB) in hyperbranched glycopolymers. The DB values are calculated according to the content of nitrogen, which are facilely determined by elemental analysis. The lectin-binding properties of HPManEMA-co-MBA to concanavalin A (ConA) are examined using a turbidimetric assay. The influence of defined DB value and molecular weight of HPManEMA-co-MBA on the clustering rate is studied. Notably, HPManEMA-co-MBAs display a low cytotoxicity in the MTT assay, thus are potential candidates for biomedical applications.

Hyperbranched poly(methylene-bis-acrylamide), poly(bis(N,N-propyl acryl amide)) (HPNPAM) and poly(bis(N,N-butyl acryl amide)) were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. HPNPAMs showed lower critical solution temperature (LCST) due to an appropriate ratio between hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups. The effects of reaction conditions on polymerization were investigated in detail. The structure of HPNPAM was characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR, Muti detector-size exclusion chromatography (MDSEC) and Ultravioletvisble (UV-Vis). The α value reached 0.20 and DB was 90%, indicating HPNPAMs with compact topology structure were successfully prepared. LCSTs were tuned by Mw and the pH value of the solution. The change of molecular size was assayed by dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscope. These results indicated that the stable uniform nanomicelles were destroyed and macromolecules aggregated together, forming large particles as temperature exceeded LCST. In addition, after the cells were incubated for 24 h, the cell viability reached 80%, which confirmed this new dual responsive HPNPAM had low cytotoxicity.
