The utilization of silicon (Si) anodes in all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASLBs) provides the potential for high energy density. However, the compatibility of sulfide solid-state electrolytes (SEs) with Si and carbon is often questioned due to potential decomposition. To investigate this, operando X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, ex-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ex-situ X-ray nano-tomography (XnT) were utilized to study the chemistry and structure evolution of nano Si composite anodes. Results from XANES demonstrated a partial decomposition of SEs during the first lithiation stage, which was further accelerated by the presence of carbon. But the performance of first three cycles in Si-SE-C was stable, which proved the generated media is ionically conductive. XnT and SEM results showed that the addition of SEs and carbon improved the structural stability of the anode with fewer pores and voids. A chemo-elasto-plastic model revealed that SEs and carbon buffered the volume expansion of Si, thus enhancing mechanical stability. The balance between the pros and cons of SEs and carbon in enhancing reaction kinetics and structural stability enabled the Si composite anode to demonstrate the highest Si utilization with higher specific capacities and better rate than pure Si and Si composite anodes with only SEs.

Layered Ni-rich oxide is a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) of high energy density, yet its poor electrochemical stability induced by electrode-electrolyte interfacial degradation has still needed to be addressed. Surface coating is one of the powerful techniques to tackle this issue, nevertheless, it has been extensively used on particle but not electrode regarding a larger area of protection. Herein, we have covered a nano-scaled layer of lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) on the electrode level of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM) surface and found lower impedance, longer cycle life, and better safety for treated battery. Most notably, such an NCM-LiPON based 1.3 Ah pouch cell delivers an energy density of 364.4 Wh kg−1 (based on positive and negative materials), along with the retention of 80.0% over 745 cycles at 0.5 C-rate, which is 1.3 times longer than the bare one. This results from modification of both superficial cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) and structure stabilization of general particle surface, therefore, role of conformal coating upon electrode surface should be highlighted.

Perovskite oxides have emerged as promising candidates for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst due to their flexible lattice structure, tunable electronic structure, superior stability, and cost-effectiveness. Recent research studies have mostly focused on the traditional methods to tune the OER performance, such as cation/anion doping, A-/B-site ordering, epitaxial strain, oxygen vacancy, and so forth, leading to reasonable yet still limited activity enhancement. Here, we report a novel strategy for promoting the OER activity for perovskite LaNiO3 by crystal phase engineering, which is realized by breaking long-range chemical bonding through amorphization. We provide the first and direct evidence that perovskite oxides with an amorphous structure can induce the self-adaptive process, which helps enhance the OER performance. This is evidenced by the fact that an amorphous LaNiO3 film on glassy carbon shows a 9-fold increase in the current density compared to that of an epitaxial LaNiO3 single crystalline film. The obtained current density of 1038 μΑ cm-2 (@ 1.6 vs RHE) is the largest value among the literature reported values. Our work thus offers a new protocol to boost the OER performance for perovskite oxides for future clean energy applications.

Metal/oxide interface is of fundamental significance to heterogeneous catalysis because the seemingly “inert” oxide support can modulate the morphology, atomic and electronic structures of the metal catalyst through the interface. The interfacial effects are well studied over a bulk oxide support but remain elusive for nanometer-sized systems like clusters, arising from the challenges associated with chemical synthesis and structural elucidation of such hybrid clusters. We hereby demonstrate the essential catalytic roles of a nanometer metal/oxide interface constructed by a hybrid Pd/Bi2O3 cluster ensemble, which is fabricated by a facile stepwise photochemical method. The Pd/Bi2O3 cluster, of which the hybrid structure is elucidated by combined electron microscopy and microanalysis, features a small Pd-Pd coordination number and more importantly a Pd-Bi spatial correlation ascribed to the heterografting between Pd and Bi terminated Bi2O3 clusters. The intra-cluster electron transfer towards Pd across the as-formed nanometer metal/oxide interface significantly weakens the ethylene adsorption without compromising the hydrogen activation. As a result, a 91% selectivity of ethylene and 90% conversion of acetylene can be achieved in a front-end hydrogenation process with a temperature as low as 44 °C., Metal/oxide interface is of fundamental significance to heterogeneous catalysis. Channeling carbon dioxide The separation of gas molecules with physisorbents can be challenging because there is often a tradeoff between capacity and selectivity. Zhou et al. report a template-free hydrothermal synthesis of the one-dimensional channel zeolite mordenite, in which some silicon was replaced by iron. Rather than forming a powder that requires further shaping, this mechanically stable material self-assembled into monoliths. Iron atoms bound in tetrahedral zeolite sites narrowed the channels and enabled the size-exclusion separation of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) over nitrogen (N 2 ) and methane. Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) is a promising high-capacity cathode material. In this work, we use spatially resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy to examine the structural transformation of SPAN and the critical role of a robust cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) on the electrode. LiSx species forms during the cycling of SPAN. However, in carbonate-based electrolytes and ether-based electrolytes with LiNO3 additives, these species are well protected by the CEI and do not dissolve into the electrolytes. In contrast, in an ether-based electrolyte without the LiNO3 additive, LiSx species dissolve into the electrolyte, resulting in the shuttle effect and capacity loss. Examination of the Li anode by XRF and SEM reveals dense spherical Li morphology in ether-based electrolytes, but sulfur is present in the absence of the LiNO3 additive. In contrast, porous dendritic Li is found in the carbonate electrolyte. These analyses established that an ether-based electrolyte with LiNO3 is a superior choice that enables stable cycling of both electrodes. Based on these insights, we successfully demonstrate the stable cycling of high areal loading SPAN cathode (>6.5 mA h cm-2) with lean electrolyte amounts, showing promising Li∥SPAN cell performance under practical conditions.

Selective coupling of methyl radicals to produce C2 species (C2H4 and C2H6) is a key challenge for oxidative coupling of methane (OCM). In traditional OCM reaction systems, homogeneous transformation of methyl radicals in O2-containing gases are uncontrollable, resulting in limited C2 selectivity and yield. Herein, we demonstrate that methyl radicals generated by La2O3 at low reaction temperature can selectively couple on the surface of 5 wt% Na2WO4/SiO2. The controllable surface coupling against overoxidation barely changes the activity of La2O3 but boosts the C2 selectivity by three times and achieves a C2 yield as high as 10.9% at bed temperature of only 570 °C. Structure-property studies suggest that Na2WO4 nanoclusters are the active sites for methyl radical coupling. The strong CH3· affinity of these sites can even endow some methane combustion catalysts with OCM activity. The findings of the surface coupling of methyl radicals open a new direction to develop OCM catalyst. The bifunctional OCM catalyst system, which composes of a methane activation center and a CH3· coupling center, may deliver promising OCM performance at reaction temperatures below the ignition temperature of C2H6 and C2H4 (~600 °C) and is therefore more controllable, safer, and certainly more attractive as an actual process.

Water electrolysis is a promising technique for carbon neutral hydrogen production. A great challenge remains at developing robust and low-cost anode catalysts. Many pre-catalysts are found to undergo surface reconstruction to give high intrinsic activity in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The reconstructed oxyhydroxides on the surface are active species and most of them outperform directly synthesized oxyhydroxides. The reason for the high intrinsic activity remains to be explored. Here, a study is reported to showcase the unique reconstruction behaviors of a pre-catalyst, thiospinel CoFe2 S4 , and its reconstruction chemistry for a high OER activity. The reconstruction of CoFe2 S4 gives a mixture with both Fe-S component and active oxyhydroxide (Co(Fe)Ox Hy ) because Co is more inclined to reconstruct as oxyhydroxide, while the Fe is more stable in Fe-S component in a major form of Fe3 S4 . The interface spin channel is demonstrated in the reconstructed CoFe2 S4 , which optimizes the energetics of OER steps on Co(Fe)Ox Hy species and facilitates the spin sensitive electron transfer to reduce the kinetic barrier of O-O coupling. The advantage is also demonstrated in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzer. This work introduces the feasibility of engineering the reconstruction chemistry of the precatalyst for high performance and durable MEA electrolyzers. All-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASLSBs) have been considered a promising next-generation energy storage technology due to their remarkable safety and high energy density. In ASLSBs, the electrochemical pathways are intrinsically different from conventional Li-S batteries using liquid electrolytes. However, the mechanism still lacks clear identification and deep understanding. Herein, for the first time, we investigated the chemistries and explored the electrochemical reaction mechanism and kinetic in ASLSBs through coupling operando Raman spectroscopy and ex-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We proved no long-chain lithium polysulfides (Li2Sn, 4≤n≤8) were formed during the redox reactions, but a short-chain polysulfide (Li2S2) intermediate phase formation was identified in the conversion between active material S8 and reduction product Li2S. The existence of intermediate phase Li2S2 results in low sulfur utilization and poor battery performance. In comparison to liquid cells, ASLSBs exhibit sluggish reaction kinetics due to the higher conversion barrier and slower charger transfer in solid-solid reactions. This study revealed the generation of Li2S2 intermediates in ASLSBs, inspiring future research to further improve the performance of ASLSBs through completing the conversions and promoting reaction kinetics in ASLSBs.

Antiferromagnetic insulators are a ubiquitous class of magnetic materials, holding the promise of low-dissipation spin-based computing devices that can display ultra-fast switching and are robust against stray fields. However, their imperviousness to magnetic fields also makes them difficult to control in a reversible and scalable manner. Here we demonstrate a novel proof-of-principle ionic approach to control the spin reorientation (Morin) transition reversibly in the common antiferromagnetic insulator α-Fe2O3 (haematite) – now an emerging spintronic material that hosts topological antiferromagnetic spin-textures and long magnon-diffusion lengths. We use a low-temperature catalytic-spillover process involving the post-growth incorporation or removal of hydrogen from α-Fe2O3 thin films. Hydrogenation drives pronounced changes in its magnetic anisotropy, Néel vector orientation and canted magnetism via electron injection and local distortions. We explain these effects with a detailed magnetic anisotropy model and first-principles calculations. Tailoring our work for future applications, we demonstrate reversible control of the room-temperature spin-state by doping/expelling hydrogen in Rh-substituted α-Fe2O3.

Single atom catalysis has emerged as a powerful technique for catalysis due to its outstanding performance and atom economy. Controlling the hybridization of the atom with its environment is crucial in determining the selectivity and/or yield of the reaction. However, the single atom environment is usually ill-defined and hard to predict because the pyrolysis process used in preparing SACs damages the original status of the precursors in the catalyst preparation. A molecular engineering approach to synthesize single atom catalysts (SACs) on a heterogeneous template provides a strategy to make SACs with a highly uniform coordinating environment. Herein, we report the preparation of a molecular engineered Pd single atom catalyst with a pre-defined M-N3C1 coordination (Pd-N3C1-SAC) using a structure-rigid Pd-N3C1 porphyrin as the precursor, which shows more efficient Suzuki coupling compared with the SAC with Pd-N4 coordination. The origin of the high activity of the Pd-N3C1-SAC is revealed through density functional theory calculations, where a lower reaction barrier for the rate-determining oxidative addition is identified.

The rational design of efficient catalysts can be guided by identifying proper descriptors that can rationalize and predict the catalytic behaviors. This study presents the feasibility of using the relative position between O p-band center and B-site metal cation d-band center as an activity descriptor for methane oxidation over LaCoO3 perovskite oxides. Experiments on B-site substituted LaFexCo1-xO3 perovskite oxides revealed that the relative positions between the two band centers governed the catalytic comportment. The suprafacial model-driven catalysts with negative relative position values exhibited exceeding activity at low temperatures; Inversely, the intrafacial model-driven catalysts with positive relative position values, showed superior activity at high temperatures. These findings were found to be effective on the A-site substituted La1-xSrxCoO3 perovskite oxides for catalytic performance prediction. This work hence showcases a promising principle to design highly active perovskite catalysts suitable for oxidation reactions. Recent observations of novel spin-orbit coupled states have generated tremendous interest in $4d/5d$ transition metal systems. A prime example is the $J_{\text{eff}}=\frac{1}{2}$ state in iridate materials and $\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ that drives Kitaev interactions. Here, by tuning the competition between spin-orbit interaction ($\lambda_{\text{SOC}}$) and trigonal crystal field splitting ($\Delta_\text{T}$), we restructure the spin-orbital wave functions into a novel $\mu=\frac{1}{2}$ state that drives Ising interactions. This is done via a topochemical reaction that converts Li$_{2}$RhO$_{3}$ to Ag$_{3}$LiRh$_{2}$O$_{6}$, leading to an enhanced trigonal distortion and a diminished spin-orbit coupling in the latter compound. Using perturbation theory, we present an explicit expression for the new $\mu=\frac{1}{2}$ state in the limit $\Delta_\text{T}\gg \lambda_{\text{SOC}}$ realized in Ag$_{3}$LiRh$_{2}$O$_{6}$, different from the conventional $J_\text{eff}=\frac{1}{2}$ state in the limit $\lambda_{\text{SOC}}\gg \Delta_\text{T}$ realized in Li$_{2}$RhO$_{3}$. The change of ground state is followed by a dramatic change of magnetism from a 6 K spin-glass in Li$_{2}$RhO$_{3}$ to a 94 K antiferromagnet in Ag$_{3}$LiRh$_{2}$O$_{6}$. The ability to precisely engineer the doping of sub-nanometer bimetallic clusters offers exciting opportunities for tailoring their catalytic performance with atomic accuracy. However, the fabrication of singly dispersed bimetallic cluster catalysts with atomic-level control of dopants has been a long-standing challenge. Herein, we report a strategy for the controllable synthesis of a precisely doped single cluster catalyst consisting of partially ligand-enveloped Au4Pt2 clusters supported on defective graphene. This creates a bimetal single cluster catalyst (Au4Pt2/G) with exceptional activity for electrochemical nitrogen (N2) reduction. Our mechanistic study reveals that each N2 molecule is activated in the confined region between cluster and graphene. The heteroatom dopant plays an indispensable role in the activation of N2 via an enhanced back donation of electrons to the N2 LUMO. Moreover, besides the heteroatom Pt, the catalytic performance of single cluster catalyst can be further tuned by using Pd in place of Pt as the dopant., The fabrication of singly dispersed metal cluster catalysts with atomic-level control of dopants is a long-standing challenge.
