Background C. panzhihuaensis is more tolerant to freezing than C. bifida but the mechanisms underlying the different freezing tolerance are unclear. Photosynthesis is one of the most temperature-sensitive processes. Lipids play important roles in membrane structure, signal transduction and energy storage, which are closely related to the stress responses of plants. In this study, the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and lipid profiles of the two species were characterized to explore the changes in photosynthetic activity and lipid metabolism following low-temperature exposure and subsequent recovery. Results Photosynthetic activity significantly decreased in C. bifida with the decrease of temperatures and reached zero after recovery. Photosynthetic activity, however, was little affected in C. panzhihuaensis. The lipid composition of C. bifida was more affected by cold and freezing treatments than C. panzhihuaensis. Compared with the control, the proportions of all the lipid categories recovered to the original level in C. panzhihuaensis, but the proportions of most lipid categories changed significantly in C. bifida after 3 d of recovery. In particular, the glycerophospholipids and prenol lipids degraded severely during the recovery period of C. bifida. Changes in acyl chain length and double bond index (DBI) occurred in more lipid classes immediately after low-temperature exposure in C. panzhihuaensis compare with those in C. bifida. DBI of the total main membrane lipids of C. panzhihuaensis was significantly higher than that of C. bifida following all temperature treatments. Conclusions The results of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters confirmed that the freezing tolerance of C. panzhihuaensis was greater than that of C. bifida. The lipid metabolism of the two species had differential responses to low temperatures. The homeostasis and plastic adjustment of lipid metabolism and the higher level of DBI of the main membrane lipids may contribute to the greater tolerance of C. panzhihuaensis to low temperatures.

Combined use of in situ passivation and macrophytes is a valuable technology that exerts remarkable effects on aquatic systems. However, the effectiveness and ecological functions of this combined technology for macrophytes-dominated eutrophic (MDE) lakes with organophosphorus-controlled internal phosphorus (P) loading were poorly understood. In this study, aquatic simulation experiments were performed to study the combination of La-modified materials (LMM; La-modified bentonite (LMB), and La/Al co-modified attapulgite (LAA)) with macrophytes (Myriophyllum verticillatum L. (MVL), Hydrilla verticillata (Linn. f.) royle (HVR), and Ceratophyllum demersum L. (CDL)) for the control of P mobility in the water column, and to investigate the passivator effects on the physiological characteristics of macrophytes. The mineralization of organophosphates (BD−Po, HCl−Po, and Res−Po) is an important factor for maintaining high internal P loadings and overlying water P concentrations in the experiments. Compared with individual treatment groups, the reduction of internal P release flux and porewater SRP concentrations was more obvious in the combined treatments. Moreover, the redox-sensitive P forms transformation is more pronounced in the surface sediments. In the LAA+M group, internal P release flux was reduced by 55% and 55% compared with individual passivators and macrophytes retreatment groups, respectively. In contrast, the LMB+M group decreased by 16% and 46%, respectively. Simultaneously, LMM had less effect on macrophytes traits compared with individual macrophytes group and enhanced the absorption of phosphate by macrophytes. The phosphate content of macrophytes in the LAA+M and LMB+M groups increased by 24% and 11%, respectively, in comparison with the individual macrophytes group. Results concluded that the combination of passivator and macrophytes enhanced the effect of ecological restoration and exerts a synergistic effect on internal P pollution with macrophytes.

Niobium in kaolin clay from the Late Permian sequences was reported in the range of several hundreds of micrograms per gram and was considered as a potential resource for its high concentrations and large areal distribution. Ti-bearing minerals associated with kaolin clay were identified as the main host phase for niobium in some case studies. However, the correlation between the concentration of niobium and titanium is poor, and the types of Ti-bearing minerals and modes of occurrence of niobium are not clear. Typical kaolin clay samples from the Late Permian sequences from southwest China were characterized, and the final products derived from kaolin clay sample were investigated using XRF, ICP-MS, XRD, SEM, and TEM (EDS). The results reveal that there were three types of TiO2 mineral phases in the clay samples: (a) massive TiO2 minerals and (b) aggregates of nano TiO2 minerals did not contain niobium while (c) granular TiO2 minerals were the source of niobium from the EDS analysis. The granular TiO2 minerals included anatase and rutile, both of which were the sources of niobium in kaolin clay in the current study. The findings are of great theoretical implication for source and origin study of Ti-bearing minerals and guidance for separation and recovery of niobium from kaolin clay.

Cycads represent one of the most ancient lineages of living seed plants. Identifying genomic features uniquely shared by cycads and other extant seed plants, but not non-seed-producing plants, may shed light on the origin of key innovations, as well as the early diversification of seed plants. Here, we report the 10.5-Gb reference genome of Cycas panzhihuaensis, complemented by the transcriptomes of 339 cycad species. Nuclear and plastid phylogenomic analyses strongly suggest that cycads and Ginkgo form a clade sister to all other living gymnosperms, in contrast to mitochondrial data, which place cycads alone in this position. We found evidence for an ancient whole-genome duplication in the common ancestor of extant gymnosperms. The Cycas genome contains four homologues of the fitD gene family that were likely acquired via horizontal gene transfer from fungi, and these genes confer herbivore resistance in cycads. The male-specific region of the Y chromosome of C. panzhihuaensis contains a MADS-box transcription factor expressed exclusively in male cones that is similar to a system reported in Ginkgo, suggesting that a sex determination mechanism controlled by MADS-box genes may have originated in the common ancestor of cycads and Ginkgo. The C. panzhihuaensis genome provides an important new resource of broad utility for biologists. The study assembled a chromosome-level genome of Cycas panzhihuaensis, the last major lineage of seed plants for which a high-quality genome assembly was lacking. The study closes an important gap in our understanding of genome structure and evolution in seed plants.

Clay-type lithium resources have been developed as an important natural lithium source secondary to hard rock sources and brine sources. In this study, a green and effective lithium extraction process employing ferric salt solutions to leach lithium-rich clay was proposed. Upon calcination treatment, 73.6% of lithium could be leached over a period of 180 min using a 15% ferric sulfate solution at 90 °C. The most suitable calcination temperature, leaching temperature, ferric sulfate concentration, and reaction time were determined to be 600 °C, 90 °C, 15% ferric sulfate, and 180 min, respectively. Ferric chloride and ferric nitrate had similar lithium leaching efficiencies under the same conditions. In addition, ferrous, sodium and calcium salts were introduced and compared in terms of their lithium extraction abilities. The results indicated that ferric ions had good selectivity for lithium leaching. The leaching process was considered to involve ion exchange between ferric ions and lithium ions.

Titanium tetrachloride is produced through the chlorination of a variety of titanium bearing ores. The chlorination step can produce a variety of metal chloride impurities, such as iron chlorides and vanadium chlorides. The technological process of removal vanadium with copper wires is widely used in China. In the process of removal vanadium, a solid and liquid mixture will be discharged as waste. V–Cu residue is a kind of solid waste filtered from the solid and liquid mixture generated in the purification process. V–Cu residue samples from Zunyi, Guizhou, China, were investigated using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscope. The results showed that this waste residue contained Ti (29%), Cu (9.87%), Cl (8.83%), V (5.77%), and an amount of niobium and tantalum. Mainly mineral phases were composed of vanadium niobium oxides, titanium niobium oxides, titanium oxides, and eriochalcite. Ti and V mainly existed in the form of oxides, as dense clumps, and were accompanied by a small amount of Nb. Cu in the V–Cu residue mainly existed in the form of chlorides, adsorbing on the surface of the Ti–V–Nb oxides.

Mercury is a highly toxic metal that can cause harm to environment and human health. As atmospheric deposition is the main source of total Hg input to aquatic system in remote and pristine regions, almost all the studies on atmospheric Hg pollution history concentrated in these areas, while the studies in non-remote areas are much limited, especially for the long history records. In this study, Huguangyan Maar Lake, an undisturbed lake system at low altitude in China, was selected to reconstruct the atmospheric mercury pollution history. Variation patterns of TOC, Hg and non-residual Sr in the sediment core indicated that, compared to the direct atmospheric Hg deposition, the effect of either Hg scavenging from water column by algae or the catchment inputs of previously deposited Hg on the Hg accumulation in the lake sediment was limited. The sediment Hg content in Huguangyan Lake was mainly controlled by the atmospheric Hg deposition, and thus accurately reflected the atmospheric Hg pollution history. The Hg a (Hg content from atmospheric deposition) in Huguangyan Lake presented a comparable variation pattern to that in remote sites. It had the same variation trend as the global atmospheric Hg before 1950 CE, which could be attributed to the Industrial Revolution. After that, it was mainly controlled by Hg emissions from Asian countries. The variation of Hg a also indicated that atmospheric Hg deposition accelerated significantly since 2000 CE. This study, along with other investigations in remote sites in China, showed that the sediment Hg in Huguangyan Lake responded to the atmospheric Hg pollution more sensitively than in the alpine regions. It should be noted that, the more intensive acceleration of Hg deposition in Huguangyan Lake may imply that the South of China suffered from much more serious atmospheric Hg pollution than previous studies revealed.

Manganese sulfate residue (MSR) is a by-product derived from the manganese sulfate production process. In this study, an iron hydroxide adsorbent was prepared from MSR using the hydrothermal conversion method. The adsorbent was characterized and used to remove copper(II) ions from aqueous solution. Batch experiments were performed to investigate the adsorption efficiency of copper ions at different contact times, initial concentrations, solution pH levels, and reaction temperatures. Adsorption equilibrium was observed in 3 h, and the best pH was under natural conditions (pH ∼ 5.5). Increasing the initial Cu2+ concentration and reaction temperature can increase the adsorption quantity. The adsorption capacity of iron hydroxide at an initial concentration of 50 mg L−1 was 14.515 mg g−1 Cu(II) under the conditions of a nature pH and room temperature. According to the adsorption data, the pseudo-second-order model can describe the adsorption kinetics of copper ions well, and the Freundlich model provides an excellent fit to the adsorption isotherm. XRD and FTIR were applied to characterize the raw materials and adsorbents to reveal the adsorption mechanism. The results suggest that the adsorbent converted from MSR is a promising material for the removal of Cu(II) in aqueous solutions.
