Research on solvent effects is an important and long-standing topic, but there still is some room, especially for the special solvent effect of fluoroalcohols. In this work, we investigated the stability of phenoxyl radical in monohydric alcohol solvents through in-situ electron paramagnetic resonance detections. The decay behavior of phenoxyl radical showed a reasonable relationship with the mesoscopic structure of alcohols, characterized by small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering. Moreover, the distinct solvent effects of fluoroalcohols were emphasized, and the significant influence of van der Waals distance in the solvents was suggested. Overall, the stability of phenoxyl radical in alcohols was quantified and correlated with the solvent structures. We believe that the established method for stability study on radicals will encourage solvent effect studies on various organic reactions, and the proposed solvent effects in fluoroalcohols may inspire the development of green solvents in both industrial conversions and organic synthesis.

H10 subtype avian influenza viruses (AIV) have been circulating in China for 40 years. H10 AIVs in China have expanded their host range from wild birds to domestic poultry and mammals, even human. Most of the H10 subtype AIVs reported in China were isolate from the southeast part. We isolated an H10N3 AIV, A/Chicken/Liaoning/SY1080/2021 (SY1080), from live poultry market (LPM) in Liaoning Province of the Northeast China. SY1080 replicated efficiently in mice lungs and nasal turbinates without prior adaptation. We systematically compared SY1080 with other H10 subtype isolates in China. Phylogenetic analysis showed that SY1080 and most of the H10 strains belonged to the Eurasian lineage. H10 AIVs in China have formed 63 genotypes. SY1080 as well as the H10N3 strains from human infections belonged to G60 genotype. H10Nx AIV acquired multiple mammalian adaptive and virulence related mutations during circulation and the recent reassortants derived internal genes from chicken H9N2 AIVs. The H10Nx subtypes AIVs posed potential threat to public health. These results suggested we should strengthen the surveillance and evaluation of H10 subtype strains.

This article elucidates the concept of large model technology, summarizes the research status of large model technology both domestically and internationally, provides an overview of the application status of large models in vertical industries, outlines the challenges and issues confronted in applying large models in the oil and gas sector, and offers prospects for the application of large models in the oil and gas industry. The existing large models can be briefly divided into three categories: large language models, visual large models, and multimodal large models. The application of large models in the oil and gas industry is still in its infancy. Based on open-source large language models, some oil and gas enterprises have released large language model products using methods like fine-tuning and retrieval augmented generation. Scholars have attempted to develop scenario-specific models for oil and gas operations by using visual/multimodal foundation models. A few researchers have constructed pre-trained foundation models for seismic data processing and interpretation, as well as core analysis. The application of large models in the oil and gas industry faces challenges such as current data quantity and quality being difficult to support the training of large models, high research and development costs, and poor algorithm autonomy and control. The application of large models should be guided by the needs of oil and gas business, taking the application of large models as an opportunity to improve data lifecycle management, enhance data governance capabilities, promote the construction of computing power, strengthen the construction of “artificial intelligence + energy” composite teams, and boost the autonomy and control of large model technology.

Traditional ventilation duct systems for embankments in cold regions are limited in their ability to regulate ventilation, which restricts their cooling effectiveness on the subgrade. This study introduces a design method for an Intelligent Adjustment Ventilation Embankment (IAVE) system that dynamically adjusts the ventilation status within the duct based on variations in ground and air temperatures. Numerical simulations were performed to compare the cooling performance and differential settlement control of the Normal Ventilation Embankment (NVE), Temperature-Controlled Ventilation Embankment (TCVE), and IAVE systems. The results demonstrated that, compared to NVE and TCVE, the IAVE system achieved more precise temperature regulation, optimized the use of environmental cooling energy, and exhibited superior long-term cooling and differential settlement control. Among the three main factors influencing IAVE performance—ventilation duct burial spacing, burial depth, and airflow velocity—the burial spacing has the most significant impact on the Artificial Permafrost Table (APT). It not only enhances cooling during cold seasons but also effectively mitigates the re-warming of the subgrade during warm seasons. This research offers an efficient, low-carbon energy utilization structure and provides calculation results to improve the thermal stability of engineering projects in cold regions.

Background & Aims: HIV accelerates liver fibrosis attributable to multiple etiologies, including HCV, HBV, and steatotic liver disease. Evidence also suggests that HIV infection itself is associated with liver fibrogenesis. Recent studies have implicated Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1) and the upstream lysophosphatidic acid (LPA)/PI3K/AKT pathway as critical regulators of hepatic fibrogenesis, and suggest a connection to HIV-related liver fibrosis. However, the relationship between YAP/PI3K/AKT pathway activation and HIV-related liver fibrosis remains uncertain. Methods: qPCR, western blot, immunofluorescence, and ELISA (replicates n ≥3) were performed in an unbiased humanized mouse model (NRG-hu HSC mice, n = 6), the precision cut liver slice ex vivo model, and both traditional in vitro models as well as a 3D spheroid system. Results: YAP target gene mRNA and protein levels (ANKRD, CTGF, CYR61) were upregulated across all models exposed to HIV. Humanized mice infected with HIV had significant increases in the percentage of YAP-positive nuclei (2.2-fold) and the percentage area of Sirius Red collagen staining (3.3-fold) compared to control mice. Serum concentrations of LPA were increased 5.8-fold in people living with HIV compared to healthy controls. Modulation of LPAR1, PI3K, and AKT by either inhibitors or small-interfering RNAs abrogated the fibrotic effects of HIV exposure and downregulated YAP target genes within cultured liver cells. Conclusions: The LPAR/PI3K/AKT axis is vital for the activation of YAP and hepatic fibrogenesis due to HIV infection. This novel mechanistic insight suggests new pharmacologic targets for treatment of liver fibrosis in people living with HIV. Impact and implications:: There are currently no FDA-approved treatments for cirrhosis, while liver disease is the second leading cause of mortality among people living with HIV after AIDS. Increased lysophosphatidic acid concentrations and AKT activation after HIV infection found in recent work suggest that the Hippo pathway may be a key regulator of HIV-related fibrogenesis. By linking lysophosphatidic acid signaling, YAP activation, and HIV-related fibrogenesis, this mechanism presents a target for future research into therapeutic interventions for not only HIV but also other liver diseases, e.g. metabolic dysfunction- or alcohol-associated liver disease.

Abstract Precision-cut liver slices (PCLS) are increasingly used as a model to investigate anti-fibrotic therapies. However, many studies use PCLS from healthy animals treated with pro-fibrotic stimuli in culture, which reflects only the early stages of fibrosis. The effects of different culture conditions on PCLS from cirrhotic animals has not been well characterized and there is no consensus on optimal methods. In this study, we report a method for the collection and culture of cirrhotic PCLS and compare the effect of common culture conditions on viability, function, and gene expression. Additionally, we compared three methods of RNA isolation and identified a protocol with high yield and purity. We observed significantly increased albumin production when cultured with insulin-transferrin-selenium and dexamethasone, and when incubated on a rocking platform. Culturing with insulin-transferrin-selenium and dexamethasone maintained gene expression closer to the levels in fresh slices. However, despite stable viability and function up to 4 days, we found significant changes in expression of key genes by day 2. Interestingly, we also observed that cirrhotic PCLS maintain viability in culture longer than slices from healthy animals. Due to the influence of matrix stiffness on fibrosis and hepatocellular function, it is important to evaluate prospective anti-fibrotic therapies in a platform that preserves tissue biomechanics. PCLS from cirrhotic animals represent a promising tool for the development of treatments for chronic liver disease.

Abstract Tissue regeneration technology has been rapidly developed and widely applied in tissue engineering and repair. Compared with traditional approaches like surgical treatment, the rising gene therapy is able to have a durable effect on tissue regeneration, such as impaired bone regeneration, articular cartilage repair and cancer-resected tissue repair. Gene therapy can also facilitate the production of in situ therapeutic factors, thus minimizing the diffusion or loss of gene complexes and enabling spatiotemporally controlled release of gene products for tissue regeneration. Among different gene delivery vectors and supportive gene-activated matrices, advanced gene/drug nanocarriers attract exceptional attraction due to their tunable physiochemical properties, as well as excellent adaptive performance in gene therapy for tissue regeneration, such as bone, cartilage, blood vessel, nerve and cancer-resected tissue repair. This paper reviews the recent advances on nonviral-mediated gene delivery systems with an emphasis on the important role of advanced nanocarriers in gene therapy and tissue regeneration.

BackgroundDue to the scarcity and high cost of MRI in resource-constrained regions, prompt diagnosis and treatment of rotator cuff tears remain problematic in these areas. Therefore, extensive research has been conducted to predict rotator cuff tears using simple and affordable anteroposterior radiographs. It remains unclear whether non-standard anteroposterior radiographs would have a notable impact on the preciseness of the diagnosis.MethodWe analyzed patients treated for shoulder pain at hospitals. These patients underwent shoulder joint MRI and standard anteroposterior radiographs, were categorized into those with rotator cuff tears and a control group. We assessed whether the radiographs were standard anteroposterior radiographs using classification criteria from previous studies. Three assessors independently measured the acromiohumeral interval, upwards migration index, acromion index, critical shoulder angle, and double-circle radius ratio in radiographic images. The intraclass correlation coefficient and receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess measurement reliability and predictive capabilities of each predictive method for rotator cuff tears.ResultsThis study included 102 non-standard radiographs that met the research criteria for the measurement and analysis. The intragroup correlation coefficients for the acromiohumeral interval, upwards migration index, and double-circle radius ratio were above 0.7 (0.77, 0.71, 0.76), while those for the acromion index and critical shoulder angle exceeded 0.8 (0.86 and 0.87). In non-standard radiographs, the double-circle radius ratio reliably predicted rotator cuff tears (p 0.05). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of the double-circle radius ratio, estimated by the three researchers for rotator cuff tears.ConclusionThis study found that non-standard radiographs significantly impaired the diagnostic performance of the acromiohumeral interval, upwards migration index, acromion index, and critical shoulder angle. Only the double-circle radius ratio maintained its predictive power (although this diminished capability may fall short of clinical relevance) and demonstrated high applicability. These findings indicate the need for researchers to prioritize the quality of radiographs and focus on reducing the sensitivity of the prediction method in relation to radiograph quality. The capability exhibited by the double-circle radius ratio warrants further investigation, to facilitate a simplified diagnosis of rotator cuff tears.

Abstract Copper‐catalyzed C─H oxygenation has drawn considerable attention in mechanistic studies. However, a comprehensive investigation combining radical pathways with a metal‐catalytic cycle is challenged by the intricate organic radicals and metallic intermediates. Herein, an online coupled EPR/UV–vis/near‐IR detecting method is developed to simultaneously monitor both reactive radical species and copper complex intermediates during the reaction. Focusing on copper‐catalyzed phenol oxygenation with cumene hydroperoxide, the short‐lived alkylperoxyl radical (EPR signal at g = 2.0143) as well as the unexpected square planar Cu(II)‐alkoxyl radical complex (near‐IR signal at 833 nm) are unveiled during the reaction, in addition to the observable phenoxyl radical in EPR, quinone product in UV–vis, and Cu(II) center in EPR. With a comprehensive picture of diverse intermediates evolving over the same timeline, a novel Cu(I)/Cu(II) proposed relay‐catalyzed sequential radical pathway. In this sequence, Cu(II) activates hydroperoxide through Cu(II)‐OOR into the alkylperoxide radical, while the reaction between Cu(I) and hydroperoxide leads to Cu(II)(•OR)OH with high H‐atom abstracting activity. These results provide a thorough understanding of the Cu(I)/Cu(II) relay catalysis for phenol oxygenation, setting the stage for mechanistic investigations into intricate radical reactions promoted by metallic complexes.

Objective: Previous studies have demonstrated synergistic antitumor effects of angiotensin system inhibition (ASI) combined with cisplatin therapy in pancreatic cancer. This study examines whether or not synergistic antitumor effects occur with combination ASI and cisplatin treatment in lung cancer, and whether or not ASI-induced changes in epithelial-mesenchymal transition play a role in the mechanism of this antitumor phenomenon. Methods: A set of lung cancer cell lines representing a spectrum of epithelial to mesenchymal phenotypes were identified and characterized. Response of epithelial-mesenchymal transition markers to losartan was characterized. Cell culture models of lung cancer were next treated with losartan, cisplatin, or combination of both. Markers of epithelial-mesenchymal transition or surrogates of other signaling pathways (AKT, Stat3, and programmed death-ligand), and cell viability were quantified. Findings were confirmed in both allogenic and syngeneic in vivo murine flank tumor models. Results: Losartan treatment significantly increased E-cadherin and reduced vimentin in human lung cancer cell lines. Combination treatment with losartan and cisplatin enhanced epithelial markers, reduced mesenchymal markers, inhibited promesenchymal signaling mediators, and reduced cell viability. Findings were confirmed in vivo in a murine flank tumor model with transition from mesenchymal to epithelial phenotype and reduced tumor size following combination losartan and cisplatin treatment. Conclusions: Combination losartan and cisplatin treatment attenuates the epithelial-mesenchymal transition pathway and enhances the cytotoxic effect of chemotherapy with in vitro and in vivo models of non–small cell lung cancer. This study suggests an important role for ASI therapy in the treatment of lung cancer.

Smart mining solutions currently suffer from inadequate big data support and insufficient AI applications. The main reason for these limitations is the absence of a comprehensive industrial internet cloud platform tailored for the coal industry, which restricts resource integration. This paper presents the development of an innovative platform designed to enhance safety, operational efficiency, and automation in fully mechanized coal mining in China. This platform integrates cloud edge computing, real-time data processing, and AI-driven analytics to improve decision-making and maintenance strategies. Several AI models have been developed for the proactive maintenance of comprehensive mining face equipment, including early warnings for periodic weighting and the detection of common faults such as those in the shearer, hydraulic support, and conveyor. The platform leverages large-scale knowledge graph models and Graph Retrieval-Augmented Generation (GraphRAG) technology to build structured knowledge graphs. This facilitates intelligent Q&A capabilities and precise fault diagnosis, thereby enhancing system responsiveness and improving the accuracy of fault resolution. The practical process of implementing such a platform primarily based on open-source components is summarized in this paper.

Starch is a major component of the human diet and has several hierarchies including granule, shell, blocklet, amylose and amylopectin, which can be used as the raw materials in food processing. In order to be applied in a suitable range, this involves the selection of separation methods and the accurate characterization of the structural properties of each starch hierarchy. Therefore, this paper analyzes the separation and characterization methods for each starch hierarchy, introduces their different applications, and thus provides some references for the development and utilization of starch resources.

Abstract Dopamine is high-value compound of pharmaceutical interest, but its industrial scale production mostly focuses on chemical synthesis, possessing environment pollution. Bio-manufacturing has caused much attention for its environmental characteristic. Resting cells were employed to as biocatalysts with extraordinary advantages like offering stable surroundings, the inherent presence of expensive cofactors. In this study, whole-cell bioconversion was employed to convert dopa to dopamine. To increase the titer and yield of dopamine production through whole-cell catalysis, three kinds of aromatic amino acid transport protein, AroP, PheP and TyrP, were selected to be co-expressed. The effects of the concentration of L-dopa, pyridoxal-5’- phosphate (PLP), reaction temperature and pH were characterized for improvement of bioconversion. Under optimal conditions, dopamine titer reached 1.44 g/L with molar yield of 46.3%, which is 6.62 times than that of initial conditions. The catalysis productivity of recombinant E. coli co-expressed L-dopa decarboxylase(DDC) and AroP was further enhanced by repeated cell recycling, which maintained over 50% of its initial ability with eight consecutive catalyses. This study was the first to successfully bioconversion of dopamine by whole-cell catalysis. This research provided reference for whole-cell catalysis which is hindered by cell membrane.

Abstract Background Considering the high reoperation rate in degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) patients undergoing lumbar surgeries and controversial results on the risk factors for the reoperation, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the reoperation rate and risk factors for the reoperation in DLS patients undergoing lumbar surgeries. Methods Literature search was conducted from inception to October 28, 2022 in Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Odds ratio (OR) was used as the effect index for the categorical data, and effect size was expressed as 95% confidence interval (CI). Heterogeneity test was performed for each outcome effect size, and subgroup analysis was performed based on study design, patients, surgery types, follow-up time, and quality of studies to explore the source of heterogeneity. Results of all outcomes were examined by sensitivity analysis. Publication bias was assessed using Begg test, and adjusted using trim-and-fill analysis. Results A total of 39 cohort studies (27 retrospective cohort studies and 12 prospective cohort studies) were finally included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The overall results showed a 10% (95%CI: 8%-12%) of reoperation rate in DLS patients undergoing lumbar surgeries. In surgery types subgroup, the reoperation rate was 11% (95%CI: 9%-13%) for decompression, 10% (95%CI: 7%-12%) for fusion, and 9% (95%CI: 5%-13%) for decompression and fusion. An increased risk of reoperation was found in patients with obesity (OR = 1.91, 95%CI: 1.04–3.51), diabetes (OR = 2.01, 95%CI: 1.43–2.82), and smoking (OR = 1.51, 95%CI: 1.23–1.84). Conclusions We found a 10% of reoperation rate in DLS patients after lumbar surgeries. Obesity, diabetes, and smoking were risk factors for the reoperation.

Unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) play a fundamental role in maintaining human health and serve as an important raw material for functional foods. However, UFAs are prone to oxidization during processing and storage, leading to deterioration. Microencapsulation of UFAs is an effective processing method to minimize oxidation and enhance its stability. In this paper, the physiological functions of UFAs and their applications in food, medicine, and other fields are summarized. The research progress of microencapsulation technology of UFAs is systematically reviewed, aiming to provide a theoretical basis and rationale for their applications in the food industry. Research has shown that the wall materials widely used were mainly proteins and carbohydrates, whereas their combination can overcome their disadvantages. Spray drying, freeze drying, molecular encapsulation, and coacervation method are most commonly used in the fabrication of microencapsulated UFAs. Using various wall materials and fabrication methods leads to very different encapsulation efficiency, which also greatly impacts the stability of UFAs during processing and storage. Hence, it is still necessary to select appropriate materials and methods according to the properties and functions of the food products. Microencapsulated UFAs exhibited slow-release properties and improved physiological functions. Therefore, it may have broad applications and excellent future development prospects in the food industry.

Background: Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is corelated with tumor-associated material (TAM), coagulation system and adipocyte tissue, but the relationships between them have been inconsistent. Our study aimed to explore the cut-off intervals of variables that are non-linearly related to ccRCC pathological T stage for providing clues to understand these discrepancies, and to effectively preoperative risk stratification. Methods: This retrospective analysis included 218 ccRCC patients with a clear pathological T stage between January 1st, 2014, and November 30th, 2021. The patients were categorized into two cohorts based on their pathological T stage: low T stage (T1 and T2) and high T stage (T3 and T4). Abdominal and perirenal fat variables were measured based on preoperative CT images. Blood biochemical indexes from the last time before surgery were also collected. The generalized sum model was used to identify cut-off intervals for nonlinear variables. Results: In specific intervals, fibrinogen levels (FIB) (2.63–4.06 g/L) and platelet (PLT) counts (>200.34 × 109/L) were significantly positively correlated with T stage, while PLT counts (

ObjectiveTo explore the reliability and validity of gait parameters obtained from gait assessment system software employing a human posture estimation algorithm based on markerless videos of children walking in clinical practice.MethodsEighteen typical developmental (TD) children and ten children with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) were recruited to walk along a designated sidewalk at a comfortable walking speed. A 3-dimensional gait analysis (3D GA) and a 2-dimensional markerless (2D ML) gait evaluation system were used to extract the gait kinematics parameters twice at an interval of 2 h.ResultsThe two measurements of the children's kinematic gait parameters revealed no significant differences (P > 0.05). Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) were generally high (ICC >0.7), showing moderate to good relative reliability. The standard error of measurement (SEM) values of all gait parameters measured by the two walks were 1.26°–2.91°. The system software had good to excellent validity compared to the 3D GA, with ICC values between 0.835 and 0.957 and SEM values of 0.87°–1.71° for the gait parameters measured by both methods. The Bland–Altman plot analysis indicated no significant systematic errors.ConclusionsThe feasibility of the markerless gait assessment method using the human posture estimation-based algorithm may provide reliable and valid gait analysis results for practical clinical applications.

Abstract Background Postoperative bone graft migration (PBGM) is a fairly rare spinal postoperative complication. Its occurrence after endoscopic surgery has rarely been reported in the literature so far. This is a case report of a 52-year-old male occurring PBGM into the thecal sac in the 8th days after an endoscopic lumbar interbody fusion (ELIF), which can make surgeons more minded with such serious rare complication after BGM. Case Presentation A 52-year-old male patient, underwent a L4-5 ELIF, presented with an acute radiculopathy on right leg and urinary incontinence in the 8th postoperative day. An emergency lumbar Computed Tomography(CT scan) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) demonstrated bone graft migration into the thecal sac at the L4-5 level, and shifting down to the lower level. The revision surgery was performed at once successfully. Finally, the patient got well managed before discharge. Conclusion Supported by this case report, we believe that PBGM into the thecal sac is a rare but horrible complication of ELIF. However, too much volume of bone graft and its posterior placement are more prone to developing this complication. Finally, we are not sure that the outcome presented in this study will be repeated in future cases.

Abstract Gene transfection was supposed to be the most promising technology to overcome the vast majority of diseases and it has been popularly reported in clinical applications of gene therapy. In spite of the rapid development of novel transfection materials and methods, the influence of morphology-dependent nanomechanics of malignant osteosarcoma on gene transfection is still unsettled. In this study, cell spreading and adhesion area was adjusted by the prepared micropatterns to regulate focal adhesion (FA) formation and cytoskeletal organization in osteosarcoma cells. The micropattern-dependent FA and cytoskeleton could induce different cellular nanomechanics to affect cell functions. Our results indicated that transfection efficiency was improved with enlarging FA area and cell nanomechanics in micropatterned osteosarcoma. The difference of gene transfection in micropatterned cells was vigorously supported by cellular internalization capacity, Ki67 proliferation ability and YAP mechanotranduction through the regulation of focal adhesion and cytoskeletal mechanics. This study is an attempt to disclose the relationship of cell nanomechanics and gene transfection for efficient gene delivery and develop multifunctional nanomedicine biomaterials for accurate gene therapy in osteosarcoma cells.

Starch and polyphenols can interact through predominant non-covalent bonds to form a range of distinctive starch-polyphenol complexes, which exhibit varied physicochemical properties, nutritional characteristics, and bioavailability. This paper mainly reviews the current regulation methods and effect, as well as the regulation mechanism of different food processing methods to the interactions between starch and polyphenol in perspective of thermal, non-thermal and the combined processing methods in recent decades. Different food processing methods turn out to modulate the interactions between starch and polyphenols by changing the multi-scale structure of starch. Thermal processing methods affect starch structure through strong thermal effect, which is beneficial to strengthen the interactions between starch and polyphenols and induce the formation of new crystalline structure. Non-thermal processing methods are considered to have a less obvious effect on starch structure in comparison of thermal processing methods, but could have more precise modifications. And the combined processing methods can further improve efficiency. This review is expected to provide reference for future quality control in food system by appropriate processing technology.

The freezing strength of the contact interface between foundation soil and infrastructure has been a key and difficult problem in the study of frost jacking of piles in cold regions; previous studies have focused on the influence law of experimental factors on freezing strength, and there are few studies on the significance of the effects of factors and their interactions on the freezing strength in different phase transition zones. In this paper, based on the existing test data, the orthogonal experimental design method considering the interactions, the principles of range analysis and variance analysis were used to investigate the significance of the effects of factors influencing the freezing strength in different phase transition zones and their interactions. Finally, a new method for establishing the prediction model of freezing strength based on the multiple linear regression model was proposed. The research shows that there are significant differences in the effects of the experimental factors and their interactions on the freezing strength in different phase transition zones. The freezing strength prediction model established by the new method can better reflect the variation law of freezing strength with factors in different phase transition zones and the influence degree of the interactions between factors.

Background To compare the mid-term follow-up clinical efficacy among three treatment approaches for lumbar degenerative diseases (LDD): standalone oblique lumbar interbody fusion (SF), oblique lumbar interbody fusion combined with lateral screw fixation (LF), and oblique lumbar interbody fusion combined with posterior screw fixation (PF). Method This retrospective study included a total of 71 cases of single level LDD that underwent OLIF in Hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine were retrospectively collected between March 2016 and September 2017. Patients were divided into three groups: 24 cases in the SF group, 24 cases in the LF group and 23 cases in the PF group. Various parameters, such as operation time, hospitalization time, and complications, were recorded. The fusion condition was assessed at last follow up. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) from pre-operation to 5 years post-surgery. Results Significantly lower mean operation time and hospitalization time were observed in the SF and LF groups compared to the PF group ( p < .05). However, no significant difference in fusion rate was found among the three groups. Regarding clinical outcomes, there was no statistically significant difference in VAS scores between the three groups during all follow-up periods. At the 6th month and 1st year after surgery, the SF and LF groups had significantly lower Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores compared to the PF group ( p < .05). There was no significant difference in perioperative complication rates among the three groups ( p > .05). In the LF group, one case of instrument displacement and urethra injury were reported, while in the SF, LF, and PF groups, 10, 9, and 3 cases of cage subsidence were reported, respectively. Conclusion The study findings suggest that oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) is a safe and effective treatment for mid-term management of lumbar degenerative diseases (LDD). Compared to the posterior screw fixation (PF) group, both the standalone OLIF (SF) and OLIF combined with lateral screw fixation (LF) groups showed advantages in terms of reduced operation time, shorter hospitalization, and faster symptom alleviation in the short-term. However, OLIF combined with PF demonstrated comparable symptom relief in the mid-term and had the additional benefit of lower cage subsidence rates while improving fusion rates as well.
