5. Factors Influencing the General Well-Being of Low-Income Korean Immigrant Elders

Abstract

This study explores factors that influence the general well-being (anxiety, depression, positive well-being, self-control, vitality, and general health) of low-income Korean immigrant elders by interviewing 206 older adults living in Los Angeles County and Orange County, California. Ordinary least squares regression results reveal that lack of English proficiency and longer residence in the United States were significant predictors of higher anxiety, higher depression, lower self-control, lower vitality, and lower general health among Korean immigrant elders. Losing a spouse was a significantly negative factor in vitality. Financial problems were significantly associated with lower positive well-being. Social support was a significant factor in lower anxiety, lower depression, higher positive well-being, higher self-control, and higher vitality. Spiritual coping was significantly associated with lower anxiety, lower depression, higher positive well-being, and higher vitality. The findings of this study show that low-income Korean immigrant elders are at high risk for psychological and physical health problems influenced by difficulties with the acculturation or adjustment and socioeconomic stress of living in a new society. The study discusses essential implications for culturally competent social work practice among low-income Korean immigrant elders.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a study on the impact of spirituality, religiousness, and social support on the psychological well-being among rural elderly. With a rural community sample of 215 older adults, hierarchical regression analyses found significant associations between dimensions of spirituality/religiousness, social support, and psychological well-being, with spirituality/religiousness inversely related to depression and social support, positively related to life satisfaction. Findings of this study suggest that practitioners need to develop programs or services that are congruent with religious /spiritual beliefs and practices in order to better enhance the psychosocial well-being and improve the quality of life among older persons in rural areas. doi: 10.1300/J083v48n03_01 KEYWORDS. Abstract

This study validated previous principal component analyses of the Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiousness/Spirituality (BMMRS) that have been conducted with persons with diverse medical conditions and traumatic brain injuries from diverse cultures (India, US), ethnicities (African American, Caucasian, South Asian), and religions (Christian, Hindu, Muslim). Participants included 398 healthy undergraduate students who completed the BMMRS online. A principal components factor analysis identified a five factor solution accounting for 64.00% of the variance in scores, labelled as: (1) Positive Spiritual Experience; (2) Negative Spiritual Experience/Congregational Support; (3) Forgiveness; (4) Religious Practices; and (5) Positive Congregational Support. The current analysis is supportive of a conceptual framework in which the BMMRS spiritual and religious variables are best conceptualised in terms of positive/negative psychological processes including: (a) emotional connection with the divine (i.e., spirituality); (b) behavioural rituals/beliefs (i.e., religiosity); and (c) social support (i.e., congregationally based). Abstract

This study examines differences in rural and urban mental health service utilization and service satisfaction. A cross-sectional survey design was used to gather information from a sample of 311 mental health consumers regarding their use of services relative to accessibility, availability, affordability, and acceptability. Data were collected from respondents individually or in small groups in various locations in one Midwestern state. Study findings showed that rural consumers are aware of fewer services, use fewer services, and are less satisfied with services than are urban consumers. 46. Neuropsychological correlates of forgiveness

Abstract

A recent study of individuals with traumatic brain injury suggests that forgiveness is a neurologically based function related to decreased self-orientation associated with decreased right parietal lobe (RPL) functioning. The current study attempted to replicate these results using 23 individuals with diagnosed seizure disorders. Neuropsychological tests of bilateral frontal, temporal, and parietal lobe functioning were used as indices of cerebral integrity and correlated with a self-report measure of forgiveness. Results indicated that frontal lobe and RPL functions were significantly and negatively correlated with forgiveness. A forward linear regression indicated that only RPL functions predict unique variance in forgiveness. The results support a neuropsychological model of forgiveness that suggests it is related to: (1) decreased self-orientation associated with decreased RPL function, which is experienced as a decreased focus on the perceived wrong to the self; and (2) decreased attention associated with decreased frontal lobe functioning, which is experienced as decreased rumination associated with feeling wronged. Research and practical implications are discussed.
