The ability to develop vivid motor imagery (MI) is important for effective mental practice. Therefore, we aimed to determine differences in the MI clarity and cortical area activity between patients with right hemiplegia and left hemiplegia after stroke in an MI task. In total, 11 participants with right hemiplegia and 14 with left hemiplegia were categorized into two groups. The MI task required the flexion and extension of the finger on the paralyzed side. Considering that MI vividness changes with MI practice, we measured the MI vividness and cortical area activity during the task before and after MI practice. MI vividness was evaluated subjectively using the visual analog scale, and cerebral hemodynamics during the task were measured using near-infrared spectroscopy in cortical regions during the MI task. The MI sharpness and cortical area activity in the MI task were significantly lower in the right hemiplegia group than in the left hemiplegia group. Therefore, when practicing mental practices with right hemiplegia, it is necessary to devise ways by which to increase MI vividness.

In recent years, mental practice (MP) using laterally inverted video of a subject's non-paralyzed upper limb to improve the vividness of presented motor imagery (MI) has been shown to be effective for improving the function of a paralyzed upper limb. However, no studies have yet assessed the activity of cortical regions engaged during MI task performance using inverse video presentations and neurophysiological indicators. This study sought to investigate changes in MI vividness and hemodynamic changes in the cerebral cortex during MI performance under the following three conditions in near-infrared spectroscopy: MI-only without inverse video presentation (MI-only), MI with action observation (AO) of an inverse video presentation of another person's hand (AO + MI (other hand)), and MI with AO of an inverse video presentation of a participant's own hand (AO + MI (own hand)). Participants included 66 healthy right-handed adults (41 men and 25 women; mean age: 26.3 ± 4.3 years). There were 23 patients in the MI-only group (mean age: 26.4 ± 4.1 years), 20 in the AO + MI (other hand) group (mean age: 25.9 ± 5.0 years), and 23 in the AO + MI (own hand) group (mean age: 26.9 ± 4.1 years). The MI task involved transferring 1 cm × 1 cm blocks from one plate to another, once per second, using chopsticks held in the non-dominant hand. Based on a visual analog scale (VAS), MI vividness was significantly higher in the AO + MI (own hand) group than in the MI-only group and the AO + MI (other hand) group. A main effect of condition was revealed in terms of MI vividness, as well as regions of interest (ROIs) in certain brain areas associated with motor processing. The data suggest that inverse video presentation of a person's own hand enhances the MI vividness and increases the activity of motor-related cortical areas during MI. Fungal fermentation of food and agricultural by-products holds promise for improving food sustainability and security. However, the molecular basis of fungal waste-to-food upcycling remains poorly understood. Here we use a multi-omics approach to characterize oncom, a fermented food traditionally produced from soymilk by-products in Java, Indonesia. Metagenomic sequencing of samples from small-scale producers in Western Java indicated that the fungus Neurospora intermedia dominates oncom. Further transcriptomic, metabolomic and phylogenomic analysis revealed that oncom-derived N. intermedia utilizes pectin and cellulose degradation during fermentation and belongs to a genetically distinct subpopulation associated with human-generated by-products. Finally, we found that N. intermedia grew on diverse by-products such as fruit and vegetable pomace and plant-based milk waste, did not encode mycotoxins, and could create foods that were positively perceived by consumers outside Indonesia. These results showcase the traditional significance and future potential of fungal fermentation for creating delicious and nutritious foods from readily available by-products.

Abstract Background An epithelial cyst in an intrapancreatic accessory spleen (ECIPAS) is rare. We report a case of ECIPAS that was treated with robot-assisted distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy. Case presentation The case was a 59-year-old woman who was referred to our hospital after a pancreatic tail tumor was found on computed tomography prior to surgery for small bowel obstruction at another hospital. A cystic lesion in the pancreatic tail was discovered and evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging and endoscopic ultrasonography. Based on clinical and radiological features, mucinous cystic neoplasm was included in the differential diagnosis. The patient underwent robot-assisted distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy. The postoperative course was uneventful. Pathological evaluation revealed a 20-mm ECIPAS in the pancreatic tail. Conclusions If a pancreatic tail tumor is present, ECIPAS should be included in the differential diagnosis. However, preoperative diagnosis is difficult, and a definitive diagnosis is often not obtained until after surgery. Surgery should be minimally invasive. Laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy has become a standard surgical procedure because it is minimally invasive. Robot-assisted surgery is not only minimally invasive, but also advantageous, because it has a stereoscopic magnifying effect and allows the forceps to move smoothly. Robot-assisted distal pancreatectomy may be a good option, when performing surgery for a pancreatic tail tumor.

Previous studies have reported that stroke patients have difficulty recalling the motor imagery (MI) of a task, also known as MI vividness. Research on combining MI with action observation is gaining importance as a method to improve MI vividness. We enrolled 10 right-handed stroke patients and compared MI vividness and cortical activity under different presentation methods (no inverted image, inverted image of another individual’s hand, and an inverted image of the patient’s nonparalyzed hand) using near-infrared spectroscopy. Images of the nonparalyzed upper limb were inverted to make the paralyzed upper limb appear as if it were moving. Three tasks (non inverted image, AO + MI (other hand), AO + MI (own hand)) were randomly performed on 10 stroke patients. MI vividness was significantly higher when the inverted image of the nonparalyzed upper limb was presented compared to the other conditions (p < 0.01). The activity of the cortical regions was also significantly enhanced (p < 0.01). Our study highlights the potential application of inverted images of a stroke patient’s own nonparalyzed hand in mental practice to promote the motor recovery of stroke patients. This technique achieved higher levels of MI vividness and cortical activity when performing motor tasks.

Soil fungi belonging to different functional guilds, such as saprotrophs, pathogens, and mycorrhizal symbionts, play key roles in forest ecosystems. To date, no study has compared the actual gene expression of these guilds in different forest soils. We used metatranscriptomics to study the competition for organic resources by these fungal groups in boreal, temperate, and Mediterranean forest soils. Using a dedicated mRNA annotation pipeline combined with the JGI MycoCosm database, we compared the transcripts of these three fungal guilds, targeting enzymes involved in C- and N mobilization from plant and microbial cell walls. Genes encoding enzymes involved in the degradation of plant cell walls were expressed at a higher level in saprotrophic fungi than in ectomycorrhizal and pathogenic fungi. However, ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi showed similarly high expression levels of genes encoding enzymes involved in fungal cell wall degradation. Transcripts for N-related transporters were more highly expressed in ectomycorrhizal fungi than in other groups. We showed that ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi compete for N in soil organic matter, suggesting that their interactions could decelerate C cycling. Metatranscriptomics provides a unique tool to test controversial ecological hypotheses and to better understand the underlying ecological processes involved in soil functioning and carbon stabilization.

Mutant populations are crucial for functional genomics and discovering novel traits for crop breeding. Sorghum, a drought and heat-tolerant C4 species, requires a vast, large-scale, annotated, and sequenced mutant resource to enhance crop improvement through functional genomics research. Here, we report a sorghum large-scale sequenced mutant population with 9.5 million ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS)-induced mutations that covered 98% of sorghum's annotated genes using inbred line BTx623. Remarkably, a total of 610 320 mutations within the promoter and enhancer regions of 18 000 and 11 790 genes, respectively, can be leveraged for novel research of cis-regulatory elements. A comparison of the distribution of mutations in the large-scale mutant library and sorghum association panel (SAP) provides insights into the influence of selection. EMS-induced mutations appeared to be random across different regions of the genome without significant enrichment in different sections of a gene, including the 5' UTR, gene body, and 3'-UTR. In contrast, there were low variation density in the coding and UTR regions in the SAP. Based on the Ka /Ks value, the mutant library (~1) experienced little selection, unlike the SAP (0.40), which has been strongly selected through breeding. All mutation data are publicly searchable through SorbMutDB (https://www.depts.ttu.edu/igcast/sorbmutdb.php) and SorghumBase (https://sorghumbase.org/). This current large-scale sequence-indexed sorghum mutant population is a crucial resource that enriched the sorghum gene pool with novel diversity and a highly valuable tool for the Poaceae family, that will advance plant biology research and crop breeding.

Previous experimental studies suggested that restraining the vocal fold vertical motion may reduce the coupling strength between the voice source and vocal tract. In this study, the effects of vocal fold vertical motion on source-filter interaction were systematically examined in a two-dimensional two-mass model coupled to a compressible flow simulation. The results showed that when allowed to move vertically, the vocal folds exhibited subharmonic vibration due to entrainment to the first vocal tract acoustic resonance. Restraining the vertical motion suppressed this entrainment. This indicates that the vertical mobility of the vocal folds may play a role in regulating source-filter interaction.

PurposeAn evidence basis is lacking but needed to compare reading ability outcomes after magnification device training remotely via telerehabilitation versus in office.MethodsA multicenter randomized controlled trial at academic centers and vision rehabilitation private practices randomized 61 visually impaired adults to telerehabilitation or in-office training 1 to 4 months after dispensing new portable electronic, hand-held, or stand optical magnifiers. Telerehabilitation included loaner equipment for Zoom videoconferencing with remote control access software. Using a multilevel regression model, changes in Activity Inventory responses using Rasch analysis estimated reading ability in dimensionless log odds units (logits) (0.14-logit change corresponds with ability change expected from a one-line change in visual acuity).ResultsAcross 47 participants who completed the trial, reading ability with new magnifiers improved significantly by 0.61 logits on average (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.36-0.86; P < 0.001) from baseline to 1 month, and by an additional 0.44 logits on average (95% CI, 0.19-0.69; P < 0.001) from 1 to 4months (i.e., after magnifier training), with very similar significant findings for both telerehabilitation (n = 29; mean improvement = 0.44 logits; 95% CI, 0.08-0.80; P = 0.018) and in-office training (n = 18; mean improvement = 0.43 logits; 95% CI, 0.15-0.71; P = .003), and no significant difference between randomized groups across both follow-ups (95% CI, -0.43 to 0.61; P = .73). Vision, demographics, and health factors were nonsignificantly related to reading ability changes from 1 to 4 months.ConclusionsReading ability improved after the provision of newly dispensed magnifiers, with further improvements following additional magnifier training via either telerehabilitation or in-office usual care.Translational relevanceThese findings provide support for the use of telerehabilitation to enhance reading ability with newly prescribed magnifiers as an alternative modality of care delivery.

Objetivo: Descrever o comprometimento relativo dos benefícios da aposentadoria com medicamentos de uso contínuo em idosos aposentados com idade igual e acima de 65 anos moradores da área de abrangência da Unidade de Saúde da Família do bairro “Jardim Santa Gertrudes”, em Jundiaí, São Paulo. Métodos: Foram realizadas 181 entrevistas domiciliares com aplicação de questionário com perguntas fechadas e pré-codificadas em relação à renda e à utilização de medicamentos. Dos que responderam ao questionário, 117 se adequaram aos critérios de inclusão. Resultados: A maioria da população do estudo era composta por mulheres (59,8%) e 62,4% dos entrevistados possuíam a aposentadoria como única fonte de renda, sendo o valor médio da aposentadoria de 1,53 salário-mínimo. A proporção média de comprometimento da aposentadoria dos idosos que compram pelo menos um medicamento foi de 23,57%. Entre as doenças crônicas relatadas, destacaram-se hipertensão arterial sistêmica (75,21%), dislipidemia (29,05%), diabetes mellitus (26,49%), artrite (20,51%) e depressão (9,40%). Conclusão: Significante porcentagem da aposentadoria é destinada à compra de medicamentos, demonstrando que há muito a ser construído, principalmente no que se refere às políticas públicas e ao planejamento dos programas de aposentadoria.
