Electrodynamics Associates (EA) is developing a MW-class high-speed generator and requires testing of the corresponding excitation controller at Florida State University's (FSU) Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS) in a controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) environment. The goal of these tests is to verify the functionality of the generator excitation controller prior to a full scale power hardware-in- the-loop (PHIL) test of the entire generator. Such tests will become feasible at FSU-CAPS in spring of 2010 as the center is currently procuring a gear system that will extend the shaft speed range of the existing 5 MW PHIL facility for rotating machinery from 450 rpm up to 24,000 rpm. This paper focuses on the CHIL testing of the primary excitation system controller, in which the secondary excitation power supply, the main generator, the prime mover, and the load were simulated on a real time computer simulator and interfaced to the controller. Simulating the high-speed generator in real-time is especially challenging since non real-time simulation models of such rotating machines typically contain relatively small time constants which pose challenges to real-time simulation algorithms. The paper discusses approaches to overcome these challenges. In addition, the plans and considerations for PHIL testing of the generator are addressed. This setup will enable, for the first time in a laboratory setup, PHIL testing of a MW scale high-speed generator with a realistic representation of its surrounding dynamic environment.

In this study, metallic constantan (Cu55-Ni44-Mn1 wt %) alloy substrates were investigated as an alternate choice of substrates to grow carbon nanotubes (CNTs). No additional catalysts were used other than the as-rolled and annealed substrates to process CNTs on them. High density CNT growth was observed to take place on these substrates when suitable conditions were used in a thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) furnace with C2H2 as the carbon precursor. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy on these samples indicated the presence of several micron long CNTs ranging in 20 to 100 nm in diameter. Raman spectra taken from the samples confirmed the presence of G band peaks (peak at ~1580 /cm) and D band peaks (peak at ~1320 /cm) commonly observed in CVD grown multiwall CNT samples with varying intensity ratios depending on the processing conditions., Published in Jnl. of Vac. Finding the correct balance between investment in weapons and information assets has proven to be a substantial challenge. Information alone cannot defeat the enemy on the battlefield, but modern long-range weaponry is useless without the information necessary to deploy it. We present a new optimization methodology that combines attack assets and bomb-damage assessment sensors in a single allocation model. The resulting model allows analysis of the tradeoffs between information (sensor) and transformation (attack) assets. We discuss the computational difficulties of the problem and cover the motivating ideas behind the methodology. Then, we outline the mathematical techniques used, and present results for a notational data set.

A new technique for solving large-scale allocation problems with partially observable states and constrained action and observation resources is introduced. The technique uses a master linear program (LP) to determine allocations among a set of control policies, and uses partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) to determine improving policies using dual prices from the master L.P. An application is made to a military problem where aircraft attack targets in a sequence of stages, with information acquired in one stage being used to plan attacks in the next.
