Metamaterials have been a hot topic over the past 2 decades, involving scientific research directions in materials, engineering, and physics. Among them, programmable mechanical metamaterials are an emerging class of metamaterials that offer intelligent programming and control of diverse mechanical properties, such as stiffness, damping, thermal expansion, and shape memory behavior. Meanwhile, it can be rationally designed to have specific geometric architectures and programming strategies in response to different types of external stimuli, such as temperature, electric and magnetic fields, and mechanical loads. These intelligent mechanical properties have a wide range of potential applications due to their uniqueness and controllability, including soft robotics, adaptive structures, and wearable devices. Thus, the programming strategies to achieve them are particularly critical. Combined with related programmable thinking concepts, this paper briefly reviews programming strategies for programmable mechanical metamaterials, including geometric, structural, and external driving force programming. Meanwhile, this paper presents the principles of programming strategies classified according to different programmable mechanical properties (e.g., programmable stiffness, deformation, multistability) and looks ahead to the challenges and opportunities for future research.

Objective To investigate the effect of moxibustion based on Lai's Tongyuan needling technique on retention of urine after stroke. Methods Totally 65 stroke patients with retention of urine were randomly divided into the control group (n=32) and observation group (n=33). All patients received comprehensive treatment and nursing care, and those in the observation group were given moxibustion based on Lai's Tongyuan needling technique. The frequency of urination and residual urine volume were recorded, and the effect of intervention was compared between two groups. Results Better outcomes of frequency of urination and residual urine volume were found in the observation group than those in the control group after intervention(P＜0. 05), The overall effective rate was 96. 67%(32/33) in the observation group and 78. 13%(25/32) in the control group, with a significant difference (P＜0. 05). Conclusion The moxibustion based on Lai's Tongyuan needling technique is potentially effective to improve the bladder function of patients with retention of urine after stroke. (目的 观察赖氏通元法艾灸对中风后并发癃闭患者的护理效果。方法 选择中风后并发癃闭的患者65例, 按随机数字表法分为对照组32例和试验组33例, 对照组采用常规治疗与护理, 试验组在对照组基础上采用赖氏通元法艾灸。记录2组患者排尿次数和残余尿量, 评价干预效果。结果 试验组排尿次数、膀胱残余尿量改善情况优于对照组, 差异有统计学意义(P＜0. 01)。试验组总有效率96. 67%(32/33), 高于对照组的78. 13%(25/32), 差异有统计学意义(P＜0. 05)。结论 赖氏通元法艾灸可改善中风后癃闭患者的膀胱功能。)

Background Subclinical infection of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) is a common condition and increases the risk of clinical infection. However, there are limited studies focused on risk stratifying and prognostic analysis of subclinical CIED infection. Methods and Results Data from 418 consecutive patients undergoing CIED replacement or upgrade between January 2011 and December 2019 were used in the analysis. Among the patients included, 50 (12.0%) were detected as positive by bacterial culture of pocket tissues. The most frequently isolated bacteria were coagulase‐negative staphylococci (76.9%). Compared with the noninfection group, more patients in the subclinical infection group were taking immunosuppressive agents, received electrode replacement, or received CIED upgrade and temporary pacing. Patients in the subclinical infection group had a higher PADIT (Prevention of Arrhythmia Device Infection Trial) score. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis found that use of immunosuppressive agents (odds ratio [OR], 6.95 [95% CI, 1.44–33.51]; P=0.02) and electrode replacement or CIED upgrade (OR, 6.73 [95% CI, 2.23–20.38]; P=0.001) were significantly associated with subclinical CIED infection. Meanwhile, compared with the low‐risk group, patients in the intermediate/high‐risk group had a higher risk of subclinical CIED infection (OR, 3.43 [95% CI, 1.58–7.41]; P=0.002). After a median follow‐up time of 36.5 months, the end points between the subclinical infection group and noninfection group were as follows: composite events (58.0% versus 41.8%, P=0.03), rehospitalization (54.0% versus 32.1%, P=0.002), cardiovascular rehospitalization (32.0% versus 13.9%, P=0.001), CIED infection (2.0% versus 0.5%, P=0.32), all‐cause mortality (28.0% versus 21.5%, P=0.30), and cardiovascular mortality (10.0% versus 7.6%, P=0.57). Conclusions Subclinical CIED infection was a common phenomenon. The PADIT score had significant value for stratifying patients at high risk of subclinical CIED infection. Subclinical CIED infection was associated with increased risks of composite events, rehospitalization, and cardiovascular rehospitalization.

Solid-state thermoelectric refrigeration and heat pump systems can be integrated with battery packs in electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) for effective thermal management in both hot and cold environments. Operating modes can be switched by changing the polarity of the input voltage to the thermoelectric system. In this paper, a new design of a battery pack is proposed which includes an acrylic battery container, copper battery holders, liquid cooling medium, and battery cells. This battery pack is integrated with a battery thermal management system (BTMS) which includes thermoelectric cooling (TEC) in combination with liquid and air circulations. The aim of the BTMS is to handle heat generation during operation of the battery pack. Heat, generated by the battery pack, is transported to the cold end of the TEC and then dissipated to the surrounding environment by a heatsink. Fundamental design optimization is carried out on a single cell first. System performance is then validated in the battery pack experiments. For the 40 ​V test, the proposed system reached approximately 20 ​°C lower when compared with only liquid cooling. In the 30 ​V power supply test, the battery pack temperature did not exceed 30 ​°C in a period of 5000 ​s. Furthermore, the battery pack temperature was under 60 ​°C at 3000 ​s during a continuous discharge condition with a 50 ​V input, which is considered an extreme condition for battery operation.

Background: Hypertensive heart disease (HHD) is a significant public health concern in China. We intend to provide an updated estimate of the burden of HHD in China between 1990 and 2030., Methods: HHD prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) data were obtained from Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 databases. Temporal trends of HHD from 1990 to 2019 were analyzed using Joinpoint regression models, and projections through 2030 were estimated by Bayesian age-period-cohort model., Results: In 2020, an estimated 334,695 newly prevalent cases and 13,196 deaths due to HHD occurred in China. From 1990 to 2019, age-standardized rate of prevalence (ASPR), mortality (ASMR) and DALYs (ASDR) showed a decreasing trend. The behavior-related risk, diet risk and excessive BMI were the most common reasons of death in HHD. According to our prediction, ASMRs and ASDRs will continue to decrease from 2020 to 2030. However, ASPRs will have a moderate rise., Conclusion: HHD continues to pose a significant threat to public health in China. To achieve the Healthy China 2030 objective, a tailored approach involving comprehensive strategies is essential. Background: Intertrochanteric fractures are one of the most common types of hip fractures, with delayed surgical treatment beyond 48 h associated with increased postoperative complications and mortality, especially in older adults. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for delayed preoperative waiting times in intertrochanteric fracture cases, based on previous research, to offer a valuable reference for clinical decision-making., Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 1,116 patients with intertrochanteric fractures admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine for internal fixation surgery from January 2017 to January 2024. Patient demographic data and clinical examination results were collected. A logistic regression model was used to construct a predictive model, which was then visualized through a nomogram. The model's performance was subsequently validated., Results: The predictive model developed from 728 patients in the training cohort, identified key predictors, including age, sex, lower extremity deep vein thrombosis, injury location, and biochemical markers. The model demonstrated strong discriminative ability, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.749 (95% confidence interval: 0.621-0.801) for the training set, and 0.745 in the validation set. Calibration curves indicated that the predicted risk of surgical delay closely aligned with observed outcomes. Furthermore, decision curve analysis verified the model's clinical utility, demonstrating its effectiveness in guiding treatment decisions., Conclusion: The nomogram model developed in this study provides a reliable tool for predicting delayed surgical intervention in patients with intertrochanteric femur fractures. We have observed the laser-assisted dynamic interference in the electron spectra triggered by attosecond pulse trains. The fingerprints of finer interference fringes, much smaller than the laser photon energy, have been clearly identified experimentally. Our measurements are successfully reproduced by theoretical simulations utilizing the numerical solution to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and the strong-field approximation. Further explorations based on the saddle point analysis and a simple quantum model strengthen our finding and reveal the importance of the phase variations of the electron wave packets, which are modulated by the vector potential across the envelope of the strong laser pulse. Our studies show that the dynamic interference can be captured and the electron in the continuum can be effectively manipulated by the current attosecond-controlled multicolor laser approach.

Background: Vitamin D is associated with vascular function; however, the impact of different vitamin D levels on vascular elasticity following prolonged exercise remains uncertain. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the association of vitamin D levels with changes in peripheral pulse wave velocity (pPWV) and the magnitude of acute post-exercise hypotension (PEH) following prolonged endurance exercise in healthy young men., Methods: All the participants were divided into two groups: the 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) sufficiency group (25(OH)D ≧50 nmol/L) and the deficiency group (25(OH)D < 50 nmol/L). A cardiopulmonary exercise test for maximal oxygen uptake ( V . O 2max ) was performed on the graded cycling. The prolonged exercise was set at 60% V . O 2max for 120 min of continuous riding on a stationary bicycle. The pPWV and blood pressure were measured at baseline and 0, 15, 30, 45, 60 min after prolonged endurance exercise., Results: Post hoc analysis revealed that the vitamin D sufficient group had a greater magnitude of PEH than the deficiency group at post-45 min. Multiple linear regression analyses showed a significant correlation between 25(OH)D and both pPWV ( p  = 0.036) and PEH ( p  = 0.007), after adjusting for V . O 2max , weight, height, and physical activity. In addition, the 25(OH)D deficiency group also had higher pPWV at post-15 min (5.41 ± 0.93 vs 4.84 ± 0.75 m/s), post-30 min (5.30 ± 0.77 vs 4.87 ± 0.50 m/s), post-45 min (5.56 ± 0.93 vs 5.05 ± 0.68 m/s) than the sufficiency group., Conclusions: There was a positive correlation between 25(OH)D levels and systolic PEH following prolonged endurance exercise. Individuals with sufficient 25(OH)D status may have better vascular elasticity and more efficient blood pressure regulation during exercise.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Chinese herb pairs are the most basic and compressed examples of Chinese herbal combinations and can be used to effectively explain the fundamental concepts of traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions. These pairings have gained significant interest due to their subtle therapeutic benefits, minimal side effects, and efficacy in treating complicated chronic conditions. The Banxia-Xiakucao Chinese herb pair (BXHP) consists of Pinellia ternata (Thunb.) Breit. (Banxia) and Prunella vulgaris L. (Xiakucao). This formula was documented in The Medical Classic of the Yellow Emperor approximately 2000 years ago，and clinical research has demonstrated that BXHP effectively treats insomnia., Aim of the Study: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and therapeutic mechanism of the BXHP through a comprehensive strategy involving network pharmacology, molecular docking, transcriptomics, and molecular biology experimental validation., Materials and Methods: The composition of BXHP was characterized using the UPLC-Q-TOF-MS. The active compounds were screened to find drug-likeness compounds by analyzing the ADME data. To predict the molecular mechanism of BXHP in sleep deprivation (SD) by network pharmacology and molecular docking. We established a rat model of SD and the in vivo efficacy of BXHP was verified through the pentobarbital sodium righting reflex test, behavioral assays, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, transmission electron microscopy, HE staining, and Nissl staining, and the underlying molecular mechanism of BXHP in SD was revealed through transcriptomic and bioinformatic analyses in conjunction with quantitative real-time PCR, Western blot, and immunofluorescence staining., Results: In the present study, we showed for the first time that BXHP reduced sleep latency, prolongs sleep duration, and improves anxiety; lowered serum CORT, IL6, TNF-α and MDA levels; decreased hypothalamic Glu levels; and elevated hypothalamic GABA and 5-HT levels in SD rats. We found 16 active compounds that acted on 583 targets, 145 of which are related to SD. By modularly dissecting the PPI network, we discovered three critical targets, Akt1, CREB1, and PRKACA, all of which play important roles in the effects of BXHP on SD. Molecular docking resulted in the identification of 16 active compounds that strongly bind to key targets. The results of GO and KEGG enrichment analyses of network pharmacology and transcriptomics focused on both the regulation of circadian rhythm and the cAMP signaling pathway, which strongly demonstrated that BXHP affects SD via the cAMP-PKA-CREB-Circadian rhythm pathway. Molecular biology experiments verified this hypothesis. Following BXHP administration, PKA and CREB phosphorylation levels were elevated in SD rats, the cAMP-PKA-CREB signaling pathway was activated, the expression levels of the biological clock genes CLOCK, p-BMAL1/BMAL1, and PER3 were increased, and the rhythmicity of the biological clock was improved., Conclusions: The active compounds in BXHP can activate the cAMP-PKA-CREB-Circadian rhythm pathway, improve the rhythmicity of the biological clock, promote sleep and ameliorate anxiety, which suggests that BXHP improves SD through a multicomponent, multitarget, multipathway mechanism. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disorder caused by chronic inflammatory reactions in the central nervous system. Currently, little is known about the changes of plasma proteomic profiles in Chinese patients with MS (CpwMS) and its relationship with the altered profiles of multi-omics such as metabolomics and gut microbiome, as well as potential molecular networks that underlie the etiology of MS. To uncover the characteristics of proteomics landscape and potential multi-omics interaction networks in CpwMS, Plasma samples were collected from 22 CpwMS and 22 healthy controls (HCs) and analyzed using a Tandem Mass Tag (TMT)-based quantitative proteomics approach. Our results showed that the plasma proteomics pattern was significantly different in CpwMS compared to HCs. A total of 90 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs), such as LAMP1 and FCG2A, were identified in CpwMS plasma comparing to HCs. Furthermore, we also observed extensive and significant correlations between the altered proteomic profiles and the changes of metabolome, gut microbiome, as well as altered immunoinflammatory responses in MS-affected patients. For instance, the level of LAMP1 and ERN1 were significantly and positively correlated with the concentrations of metabolite L-glutamic acid and pro-inflammatory factor IL-17 (Padj < 0.05). However, they were negatively correlated with the amounts of other metabolites such as L-tyrosine and sphingosine 1-phosphate, as well as the concentrations of IL-8 and MIP-1α. This study outlined the underlying multi-omics integrated mechanisms that might regulate peripheral immunoinflammatory responses and MS progression. Attosecond chronoscopy enables the exploration of correlated electron dynamics in real time. One key observable of attosecond physics is the determination of "time zero" of photoionization, the time delay with which the wave packet of the ionized electron departs from the ionic core. This observable has become accessible by experimental advances in attosecond streaking and reconstruction of attosecond beating by interference of two-photon transitions (RABBIT) techniques. In this Letter, we explore photoionization time delays by strong extreme ultraviolet fields beyond the linear-response limit. We identify novel signatures in time delays signifying strong coupling between atoms and light fields and the light-field dressing of the ion. As a prototypical case, we study the interelectronic coherence and entanglement in helium driven by a strong extreme ultraviolet field. By the numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in its full dimensionality, we show that the time delay of the photoionized electron allows one to monitor the ultrafast variations of coherence dynamics and entanglement in real time.

Background: Endometrial cancer is one of the most common female cancers globally and in China. Although timely assessment of 5-year relative survival is crucial for guiding secondary prevention and early screening programs for endometrial cancer patients, those kinds of data are scarce in China. We aimed to provide a timely and accurate assessment of 5-year relative survival for patients with endometrial cancer from eastern China., Methods: Overall, 945 patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer during 2004 - 2018 from four cancer registries with high-quality data from Taizhou, eastern China were included. Period analysis was used to calculate 5-year relative survival for overall and the stratification by age at diagnosis and region. Model-based period analysis was used to predict the 5-year relative survival for the upcoming period of 2019 - 2023., Results: We found that 5-year relative survival during 2014 - 2018 reached 86.4% for overall, while urban areas had higher survival compared to rural areas (91.3% vs. 85.3%). Furthermore, there was a clear age gradient, decreasing from 89.3% for age < 55 years to 80.5% for age > 74 years. Predicted 5-year relative survival for the upcoming period 2019 - 2023 could reach 88.4%., Conclusions: We provide, a timely and accurate assessment of 5-year relative survival for patients with endometrial cancer from Taizhou, eastern China, reaching 86.4% for overall. Objective: Limited research has explored the long-term effect of reduced PM 2.5 exposure on cognitive function. This study aimed to investigate the effects of time-dependent PM 2.5 exposure and the interactions of PM 2.5 and aging on declines in Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores, in carriers and non-carriers of the APOE-ε4 allele., Methods: Participants aged over 60 were recruited for this cohort study, undergoing MMSE tests twice from the Taiwan Biobank Program from 2008 to 2020. Participants with dementia or baseline MMSE scores <24 were excluded. Annual PM 2.5 levels were estimated using a hybrid kriging/land use regression model with extreme gradient boosting, treated as a time-dependent variable. Generalized estimating equations were used to assess the impacts of repeated PM 2.5 on MMSE decline, further stratified by the presence of APOE-ε4 alleles., Results: After follow-up, 290 participants out of the overall 7,000 community residents in the Biobank dataset demonstrated incidences of MMSE declines (<24), with an average MMSE score decline of 1.11 per year. Participants with ε4/ε4 alleles in the APOE gene had significantly 3.68-fold risks of MMSE decline. High levels of PM 2.5 across all visits were significantly associated with worsening of scores on the overall MMSE. As annual levels of PM 2.5 decreased over time, the impact of PM 2.5 on MMSE decline also slowly diminished., Conclusion: Long-term PM 2.5 exposure may be associated with increased risk of MMSE decline, despite improvements in ambient PM 2.5 levels over time. A cascade reaction of cyclopropyl alcohols, DABSO (1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane-1,4-disulfinate), and N -(sulfonyl)acrylamides has been developed. This tandem process went through a cyclopropanol ring opening and Michael addition sequence. The γ-keto sulfinate generated from the reaction between cyclopropanol and DABSO serves as the nucleophilic reagent, and N -(sulfonyl)acrylamide is used as the Michael addition acceptor. By utilizing this strategy, multitudinous sulfone-bridged 1,7-dicarbonyl compounds that contain both a β-sulfonyl amide unit and γ-keto sulfone skeleton were conveniently synthesized.

Background: This study aimed to identify the prognostic-related differentially expressed ferroptosis-associated genes (DEFAGs) in papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC)., Methods: Data encompassing simple nucleotide variation, transcriptome profiles, and relevant clinical information of PRCC patients were sourced from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. The expression matrix of ferroptosis-associated genes (FAGs) was analyzed using the "limma" package in R to identify differentially expressed DEFAGs. Lasso regression analysis, along with univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regressions, was employed to identify independent prognostic-related DEFAGs and formulate a nomogram. Additionally, we examined potential independent survival-related clinical risk factors and compared immune cell infiltration and tumor mutation burden (TMB) differences between high- and low-risk patient groups., Results: A cohort of 321 patients were analyzed, revealing twelve FAGs significantly influencing the overall survival (OS) of PRCC patients. Among them, two mRNAs (GCLC, HSBP1) emerged as independent prognostic-related DEFAGs. Smoking status, tumor stage, and risk score were identified as independent clinical risk factors for PRCC. Furthermore, notable disparities in immune cell infiltration and function were observed between high- and low-risk groups. GCLC and HSBP1 were associated with various immune cells and functions, TMB, and immune evasion., Conclusion: This finding revealed two independent prognostic-related DEFAGs in PRCC and established a robust prognostic model, offering potential therapeutic targets and promising insights for the management of this disease., (© 2024. High-order harmonic generation (HHG) in condensed matter is highly important for potential applications in various fields, such as materials characterization, all-optical switches, and coherent light source generation. Linking HHG to the properties or dynamic processes of materials is essential for realizing these applications. Here, a bridge has been built between HHG and the transient properties of materials through the engineering of interband polarization in a photoexcited three-dimensional Dirac semimetal (3D-DSM). It has been found that HHG can be efficiently manipulated by the electronic relaxation dynamics of 3D-DSM on an ultrafast time scale of several hundred femtoseconds. Furthermore, time-resolved HHG (tr-HHG) has been demonstrated to be a powerful spectroscopy method for tracking electron relaxation dynamics, enabling the identification of electron thermalization and electron-phonon coupling processes and the quantitative extraction of electron-phonon coupling strength. This demonstration provides insights into the active control of HHG and measurements of the electron dynamics.

Background: While timely assessment of long-term survival for patients with bone cancer is essential for evaluation on early detection and prognosis level of treatment of bone cancer, those data are extremely scarce in China. We aimed to timely and accurately assess long-term survival for patients with bone cancer in Eastern China., Methods: Patients diagnosed with bone cancer during 2004 - 2018 from four cancer registries with high-quality data from Taizhou, Eastern China were included. Five-year relative survival (RS) of bone cancer patients was calculated by period analysis for overall and the stratification. We further predicted 5-year RS during upcoming 2019 - 2023 using a model-based period analysis and survival data during 2004 - 2018., Results: Overall, 5-year RS for patients with bone cancer during 2014 - 2018 reached 46.6%, being 40.8% for male and 51.0% for female. Five-year RS declined along with aging, decreasing from 58.9% for age < 45 years to 41.5% for age > 60 years, while 5-year RS for urban area was higher compared to rural area (59.1% vs. 44.3%). The 5-year RS during upcoming 2019 - 2023 reached 48.3%. We found a clear upward trend in 5-year RS during 2004 - 2023 for overall and the stratification by sex, age at diagnosis, and region., Conclusions: We found that, for first time in China using period analysis, most up-to-date 5-year RS for patients with bone cancer reached 46.6% during 2014 - 2018, and is projected to reach 48.3% for the period 2019 - 2023, which has important implications for timely evaluation on early detection and prognosis level of treatment for patients with bone cancer in Eastern China., Competing Interests: None to declare., (Copyright 2024, Xie et al.)

However, there remains a gap in comprehensive research regarding the association between SHR and mortality among patients experiencing cardiac arrest and admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU)., Methods: A total of 535 patients with their initial ICU admission suffered cardiac arrest, according to the American Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC)-IV database. Patients were stratified into four categories based on quantiles of SHR. Multivariable Cox regression models were used to evaluate the association SHR and mortality. The association between SHR and mortality was assessed using multivariable Cox regression models. Subgroup analyses were conducted to determine whether SHR influenced ICU, 1-year, and long-term all-cause mortality in subgroups stratified according to diabetes status., Results: Patients with higher SHR, when compared to the reference quartile 1 group, exhibited a greater risk of ICU mortality (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 3.029; 95% CI: 1.802-5.090), 1-year mortality (aHR = 3.057; 95% CI: 1.885-4.958), and long-term mortality (aHR = 3.183; 95% CI: 2.020-5.015). This association was particularly noteworthy among patients without diabetes, as indicated by subgroup analysis., Conclusion: Elevated SHR was notably associated with heightened risks of ICU, 1-year, and long-term all-cause mortality among cardiac arrest patients. Context: There is limited data on the clinical significance of metabolic hyperferritinemia (MHF) based on the most recent consensus., Objective: We aimed to validate the clinical outcomes of MHF in the general population and patients with biopsy-proven metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD)., Methods: The NHANES database and PERSONS cohort were included. MHF was defined as elevated serum ferritin with metabolic dysfunction (MD) and stratified into different grades according to ferritin (grade 1: 200 [females]/300 [males]-550 ng/mL; grade 2: 550-1000 ng/mL; grade 3: >1000 ng/mL). The clinical outcomes, including all-cause death, comorbidities, and liver histology, were compared between non-MHF and MHF in adjusted models., Results: In NHANES, compared with non-MHF with MD, MHF was related to higher risks of advanced fibrosis (P = .036), elevated albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR, P = .001), and sarcopenia (P = .013). Although the association between all grades of MHF and mortality was insignificant (P = .122), grades 2/3 was associated with increased mortality (P = .029). When comparing with non-MHF without MD, the harmful effects of MHF were more significant in mortality (P < .001), elevated UACR (P < .001), cardiovascular disease (P = .028), and sarcopenia (P < .001). In the PERSONS cohort, MHF was associated with more advanced grades of steatosis (P < .001), lobular inflammation (P < .001), advanced fibrosis (P = .017), and more severe hepatocellular iron deposition (P < .001)., Conclusion: Both in the general population and in at-risk individuals with MAFLD, MHF was related with poorer clinical outcomes., (© The Author(s) 2023. For atomically thin two-dimensional materials, variations in layer thickness can result in significant changes in the electronic energy band structure and physicochemical properties, thereby influencing the carrier dynamics and device performance. In this work, we employ time- and energy-resolved photoemission electron microscopy to reveal the ultrafast carrier dynamics of PdSe 2 with different layer thicknesses. We find that for few-layer PdSe 2 with a semiconductor phase, an ultrafast hot carrier cooling on a timescale of approximately 0.3 ps and an ultrafast defect trapping on a timescale of approximately 1.3 ps are unveiled, followed by a slower decay of approximately tens of picoseconds. However, for bulk PdSe 2 with a semimetal phase, only an ultrafast hot carrier cooling and a slower decay of approximately tens of picoseconds are observed, while the contribution of defect trapping is suppressed with the increase of layer number. Theoretical calculations of the electronic energy band structure further confirm the transition from a semiconductor to a semimetal. Our work demonstrates that TR- and ER-PEEM with ultrahigh spatiotemporal resolution and wide-field imaging capability has great advantages in revealing the intricate details of ultrafast carrier dynamics of nanomaterials.

The Yangtze River, the largest river in China, has not been comprehensively studied for its basin's microplastic pollution status. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation and assessment system of microplastics was developed at the river basin scale to characterize the spatial distribution and composition of microplastics in the Yangtze River Basin in order to analyze their influencing factors and assess their ecological risks. The results showed that the microplastic abundance in the study area ranged from 21 to 44 080 n·m -3 , with an average abundance of 4 483 n·m -3 . The spatial distribution of microplastic abundance was higher in the tributaries than in the main streams (except the Ganjiang Basin), with the Chengdu of the Minjiang Basin being the tributary area with the highest abundance of microplastics detected. The size of microplastics in the river basin was concentrated in the 0-1 mm range; the shapes were mainly fiber and fragment; and the colors were mainly colored and transparent. Further, introducing the diversity index of microplastics, it was found that both the Simpson index and the Shannon-Wiener index could quantify the diversity of microplastic characteristic composition in the river basin, but there were certain differences in the changing trends between the two. Regression analysis showed that anthropogenic activities were significantly and positively correlated with microplastic abundance ( P <0.05), and among the eight anthropogenic activity factors, civilian vehicle ownership and tourism income were the most strongly correlated with microplastic abundance, indicating that transportation and tourism were the main factors influencing microplastic distribution. From the perspective of the potential ecological risk index of microplastics, microplastics in the Yangtze River Basin posed a certain ecological risk, with 68.97% of the area falling within risk zones III and IV, with the ecological risk of microplastics in Taihu Lake warranting more widespread attention.

Neonicotinoid insecticides, which target insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), have been widely and intensively used to control the whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, a highly damaging, globally distributed, crop pest. This has inevitably led to the emergence of populations with resistance to neonicotinoids. However, to date, there have been no reports of target-site resistance involving mutation of B. tabaci nAChR genes. Here we characterize the nAChR subunit gene family of B. tabaci and identify dual mutations (A58T&R79E) in one of these genes (BTβ1) that confer resistance to multiple neonicotinoids. Transgenic D. melanogaster, where the native nAChR Dβ1 was replaced with BTβ1A58T&R79E, were significantly more resistant to neonicotinoids than flies where Dβ1 were replaced with the wildtype BTβ1 sequence, demonstrating the causal role of the mutations in resistance. The two mutations identified in this study replace two amino acids that are highly conserved in >200 insect species. Three-dimensional modelling suggests a molecular mechanism for this resistance, whereby A58T forms a hydrogen bond with the R79E side chain, which positions its negatively-charged carboxylate group to electrostatically repulse a neonicotinoid at the orthosteric site. The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, comes up high metabolic resistance to most neonicotinoids in long-term evolution, which is the key problem of pest control. UGT glycosyltransferase, as a secondary detoxification enzyme, plays an indispensable role in detoxification metabolism. In this study, UGT inhibitors, 5-nitrouracil and sulfinpyrazone, dramatically augmented the toxic damage of neonicotinoids to B. tabaci. A UGT named UGT353G2 was identified in whitefly, which was notably up-regulated in resistant strain (3.92 folds), and could be induced by most neonicotinoids. Additionally, the using of RNA interference (RNAi) suppresses UGT353G2 substantially increased sensitivity to neonicotinoids in resistant strain. Our results support that UGT353G2 may be involved in the neonicotinoids resistance of whitefly. Understanding the effects of upslope runoff and soil pipe collapse on slope water erosion can provide scien-tific basis for preventing Mollisol degradation caused by soil erosion. We conducted an experiment to investigate the effects of upslope inflow rate and soil pipe collapse on slope water erosion and to quantify the contribution of soil pipe erosion to slope soil erosion. The experiment included three inflow rates (30, 40, and 50 L·min -1 ) and three near-surface soil hydrological conditions (without soil pipe: NP; with soil pipe but no pipe flow: PF 0 ; with pipe flow: PF 1 ). The results showed that: 1) Slope soil erosion increased with increasing inflow rates; when the inflow rate increased from 30 L·min -1 to 40 and 50 L·min -1 , slope soil erosion increased by 100.0%-111.5% and 214.8%-289.2%, respectively. 2) The soil pipe occurrence and pipe flow formation aggravated the slope water erosion process. At inflow rates of 30, 40, and 50 L·min -1 , slope soil loss under the PF 0 and PF 1 treatments were 1.4-1.6 times and 1.7-2.1 times of that under the NP treatment. The contribution of soil pipe erosion to slope soil loss was 26.7%-37.6% under the PF 0 treatment and 40.5%-51.9% under the PF 1 treatment. 3) Soil pipe collapse intensified the rill erosion process. Compared with the NP treatment at 30, 40, and 50 L·min -1 inflow rate, rill erosion amounts under the PF 0 and PF 1 treatments increased by 38.1%-66.0% and by 93.7%-128.4%, respectively. Our results suggested that increasing upslope inflow rate resulted in higher surface runoff velocity, which promoted runoff detachment and transport capacity, and then aggrandized the amount of slope soil erosion. Moreover, soil pipe collapse exacerbated rill erosion process. When the soil pipe collapsed, all surface runoff was converted to soil pipe flow, which accelerated flow velocity and slope soil erosion process, and then increased the amount of slope soil erosion.

To explore the effect of monoculture and mixture sowing artificial grassland on the photosynthetic characteristics of Leymus chinensis and Medicago sativa , we determined the diurnal variation of photosynthetic properties of L. chinensis and M. sativa under different treatments. The results showed that the diurnal changes of net photosynthetic rate, blade temperature and transpiration rate of L. chinensis and M. sativa showed 'unimodal type' in monoculture, the stomatal conductance of M. sativa showed 'unimodal type', and the stomatal conductance and water use efficiency of L. chinensis showed 'bimodal type'. Under the mixed sowing treatment, the diurnal changes of net photosynthetic rate, blade temperature and transpiration rate of L. chinensis and M. sativa showed 'unimodal type', the stomatal conductance and water use efficiency of L. chinensis showed 'unimodal type', and the stomatal conductance of M. sativa showed 'bimodal type'. The peak photosynthetic rate of L. chinensis under mixture was signi-ficantly higher than that under monoculture, being 17.72 and 13.65 μmol CO 2 ·m -2 ·s -1 , respectively. Under monoculture and mixture sowing treatments, the chlorophyll content of L. chinensis was higher than that of M. sativa , nitrogen content of the leaves of L. chinensis was lower than that of M. sativa , and the nitrogen content in the leaves of mixture sowing L. chinensis was significantly higher than that of monoculture sowing L. chinensis , which were 27.60 and 22.55 g·kg -1 , respectively. Net photosynthetic rates of L. chinensis and M. sativa were significantly positively correlated with stomatal conductance and transpiration rate, and significantly negatively correlated with intercellular CO 2 concentration under different planting methods. Net photosynthetic rate of M. sativa was significantly positively correlated with blade temperature and water use efficiency. In summary, mixed sowing was beneficial to enhance nitrogen content of L. chinensis . Our results provided a theoretical basis for the response of the photosynthetic characteristics of forage to planting mode of artificial grassland.

Objective: Poststroke fatigue (PSF) is a common and debilitating problem among stroke patients. Multidimensional fatigue inventory (MFI) has been recommended to assess fatigue related to acquired brain injury. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of MFI among stroke patients., Methods: The study recruited 252 stroke patients in China. The internal consistency of the Chinese-version MFI was evaluated using Cronbach's α coefficients. The test-retest reliability was measured over a 5-day interval with intraclass correlation coefficient. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to analyze the construct validity. The concurrent validity of MFI was examined by calculating the Pearson's correlation coefficient between the scores of MFI and the fatigue assessment scale (FAS)., Results: The exploratory factor analysis of the Chinese-version of MFI showed that it captured three dimensions of PSF, namely, physical fatigue, mental fatigue, and level of activity. The Chinese-version MFI demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency with Cronbach's α ranging from 0.83 (mental fatigue) to 0.91 (total scale). The Chinese-version MFI showed adequate test-retest reliability with intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.70 for the total scale, 0.69 for physical fatigue, 0.66 for mental fatigue, and 0.62 for level of activity. The concurrent validity of the Chinese-version MFI was demonstrated by a significant positive correlation (r=0.49, p <0.001) with FAS., Conclusion: This study findings showed that Chinese-version MFI has adequate internal consistency and test-retest reliability, and demonstrated its concurrent validity with FAS. Background: Dysregulated microRNA (miRNA) is crucial in the progression of diabetic nephropathy (DN)., Aim: To investigate the potential molecular mechanism of Icariin (ICA) in regulating endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-mediated apoptosis in high glucose (HG)-induced primary rat kidney cells (PRKs), with emphasis on the role of miR-503 and sirtuin 4 (SIRT4) in this process., Methods: Single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (65 mg/kg) in Sprague-Dawley rats induce DN in the in vivo hyperglycemic model. Glucose-treated PRKs were used as an in vitro HG model. An immunofluorescence assay identified isolated PRKs. Cell Counting Kit-8 and flow cytometry analyzed the effect of ICA treatment on cell viability and apoptosis, respectively. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blot analyzed the levels of ER stress-related proteins. Dual luciferase analysis of miR-503 binding to downstream SIRT4 was performed., Results: ICA treatment alleviated the upregulated miR-503 expression in vivo (DN) and in vitro (HG). Mechanistically, ICA reduced HG-induced miR-503 overexpression, thereby counteracting its function in downregulating SIRT4 levels. ICA regulated the miR-503/SIRT4 axis and subsequent ER stress to alleviate HG-induced PRKs injury., Conclusion: ICA reduced HG-mediated inhibition of cell viability, promotion of apoptosis, and ER stress in PRKs. These effects involved regulation of the miR-503/SIRT4 axis. Homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) is a common molecular signature of genomic instability and has been shown to be a biomarker for targeted therapies. However, there is a lack of studies on the role of HRD changes in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) transcriptomics. HRD scores were determined using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array data from LUAD patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Transcriptional data from patients with different scores were analyzed to identify biomarkers associated with HRD. Candidate biomarkers were validated using Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO)-sourced datasets and an immunotherapy cohort. According to the bulk transcriptome and clinical characteristics of 912 LUAD patients and Single-cell RNA-seq of 9 LUAD patients from TCGA and GEO databases, we observed increased MS4A6A expression in HRD tumors; high MS4A6A expression predicted improved survival outcomes. Furthermore, a comprehensive analysis of the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) revealed a positive correlation between MS4A6A expression and neoantigen loading and immune cell infiltration. Additionally, the immunotherapy cohort confirmed the possibility of using MS4A6A as a biomarker. Collectively, we suggest that MS4A6A is associated with HRD and provide a new perspective toward identifying promising biomarkers for immunotherapy.

The sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci , (Gennadius) (Hemiptera:Aleyrodidae) is a global pest of crops. Neonicotinoids are efficient insecticides used for control of this pest. Insecticidal targets of neonicotinoids are insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). Here, we characterized and cloned the full length of the nAChR β1 subunit ( BTβ1 ) in B. tabaci and confirmed the consistency of BTβ1 in B. tabaci MEAM1 and MED. Expression levels of BTβ1 in different developmental stages and body parts of adults were investigated and compared in B. tabaci MED. dsRNA was prepared to knock down BTβ1 in adult B. tabaci and significantly decreases the susceptibility to five neonicotinoid insecticides, including imidacloprid, clothianidin, thiacloprid, nitenpyram, and dinotefuran. This study indicated BTβ1 as a notable site influencing the susceptibility of B. tabaci to neonicotinoids.

Seven undescribed compounds, colletotrichindoles A-E, colletotrichaniline A, and colletotrichdiol A, as well as three known compounds, (-)-isoalternatine A, (+)-alternatine A and 3-hydroxybutan-2-yl 2-phenylacetate were isolated from the marine-derived fungus Colletotrichu gloeosporioides BB4. The racemic mixtures colletotrichindole A，colletotrichindole C, and colletotrichdiol A were further separated by chiral chromatography to give three pairs of enantiomers (10S,11R,13S)/(10R,11S,13R)-colletotrichindole A, (10R,11R,13S)/(10S,11S,13R)-colletotrichindole C, and (9S,10S)/(9R,10R)-colletotrichdiol A, respectively. The chemical structures of seven undescribed compounds and the known compounds, (-)-isoalternatine A, and (+)-alternatine A were determined using a combination of NMR, MS, X-ray diffraction, ECD calculations, and/or chemical synthesis. All possible enantiomers of colletotrichindoles A-E were synthesized and used to determine the absolute configurations of the natural products by comparing their spectroscopic data and HPLC retention times on a chiral column. In addition, the X-ray crystal structures of the known compounds (-)-isoalternatine A and (+)-alternatine A were also obtained to confirm their absolute configurations. Almost every quantum circuit is built with two-qubit gates in the current stage, which are crucial to the quantum computing in any platform. The entangling gates based on Mølmer-Sørensen schemes are widely exploited in the trapped-ion system, with the utilization of the collective motional modes of ions and two laser-controlled internal states, which are served as qubits. The key to realize high-fidelity and robust gates is the minimization of the entanglement between the qubits and the motional modes under various sources of errors after the gate operation. In this work, we propose an efficient numerical method to search high-quality solutions for phase-modulated pulses. Instead of directly optimizing a cost function, which contains the fidelity and the robustness of the gates, we convert the problem to the combination of linear algebra and the solution to quadratic equations. Once a solution with the gate fidelity of 1 is found, the laser power can be further reduced while searching on the manifold where the fidelity remains 1. Our method largely overcomes the problem of the convergence and is shown to be effective up to 60 ions, which suffices the need of the gate design in current trapped-ion experiments.

Importance: The association between sodium-glucose transport protein 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) use and the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) remains controversial. The benefits of SGLT2i use in patients to reduce AKI requiring dialysis (AKI-D) and concomitant diseases with AKI as well as improve AKI prognosis have not yet been established., Objective: To investigate the association between SGLT2i use and AKI incidence in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D)., Design, Setting, and Participants: This nationwide retrospective cohort study used the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. The study analyzed a propensity score-matched population of 104 462 patients with T2D treated with SGLT2is or dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors (DPP4is) between May 2016 and December 2018. All participants were followed up from the index date until the occurrence of outcomes of interest, death, or the end of the study, whichever was earliest. Analysis was conducted between October 15, 2021, and January 30, 2022., Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was the incidence of AKI and AKI-D during the study period. AKI was diagnosed using International Classification of Diseases diagnostic codes, and AKI-D was determined using the diagnostic codes and dialysis treatment during the same hospitalization. Conditional Cox proportional hazard models assessed the associations between SGLT2i use and the risks of AKI and AKI-D. The concomitant diseases with AKI and its 90-day prognosis, ie, the occurrence of advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD stage 4 and 5), end-stage kidney disease, or death, were considered when exploring the outcomes of SGLT2i use., Results: In a total of 104 462 patients, 46 065 (44.1%) were female patients, and the mean (SD) age was 58 (12) years. After a follow-up of approximately 2.50 years, 856 participants (0.8%) had AKI and 102 (<0.1%) had AKI-D. SGLT2i users had a 0.66-fold risk for AKI (95% CI, 0.57-0.75; P < .001) and 0.56-fold risk of AKI-D (95% CI, 0.37-0.84; P = .005) compared with DPP4i users. The numbers of patients with AKI with heart disease, sepsis, respiratory failure, and shock were 80 (22.73%), 83 (23.58%), 23 (6.53%), and 10 (2.84%), respectively. SGLT2i use was associated with lower risk of AKI with respiratory failure (hazard ratio [HR], 0.42; 95% CI, 0.26-0.69; P < .001) and shock (HR, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.23-0.99; P = .048) but not AKI with heart disease (HR, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.58-1.07; P = .13) and sepsis (HR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.58-1.03; P = .08). The 90-day AKI prognosis for the risk of advanced CKD indicated a 6.53% (23 of 352 patients) lower incidence in SGLT2i users than in DPP4i users (P = .045)., Conclusions and Relevance: The study findings suggest that patients with T2D who receive SGLT2i may have lower risk of AKI and AKI-D compared with those who receive DPP4i.

Dimethylated histone H3 Lys9 (H3K9me2) is a conserved heterochromatic mark catalyzed by SUPPRESSOR OF VARIEGATION 3-9 HOMOLOG (SUVH) methyltransferases in plants. However, the mechanism underlying the locus specificity of SUVH enzymes has long been elusive. Here, we show that a conserved N-terminal motif is essential for SUVH6-mediated H3K9me2 deposition in planta. The SUVH6 N-terminal peptide can be recognized by the bromo-adjacent homology (BAH) domain of the RNA- and chromatin-binding protein ANTI-SILENCING 1 (ASI1), which has been shown to function in a complex to confer gene expression regulation. Structural data indicate that a classic aromatic cage of ASI1-BAH domain specifically recognizes an arginine residue of SUVH6 through extensive hydrogen bonding interactions. A classic aromatic cage of ASI1 specifically recognizes an arginine residue of SUVH6 through extensive cation-π interactions, playing a key role in recognition. The SUVH6-ASI1 module confers locus-specific H3K9me2 deposition at most SUVH6 target loci and gives rise to distinct regulation of gene expression depending on the target loci, either conferring transcriptional silencing or posttranscriptional processing of mRNA. More importantly, such mechanism is conserved in multiple plant species, indicating a coordinated evolutionary process between SUVH6 and ASI1. In summary, our findings uncover a conserved mechanism for the locus specificity of H3K9 methylation in planta. These findings provide mechanistic insights into the delicate regulation of H3K9 methylation homeostasis in plants.

Objectives: To investigate the short-term efficacy and radiotoxicity 3.543of chronoradiotherapy in patients with cervical cancer. We also examined the overall symptom score and quality of life (QOL) of patients who underwent morning radiotherapy and evening radiotherapy., Methods: We conducted a multicenter randomized controlled trial to compare the effects of morning radiotherapy (9:00-11:00 AM) with evening radiotherapy (7:00-9:00 PM) in cervical cancer patients receiving radiotherapy. From November 2021 to June 2022, 114 cervical cancer patients admitted to eight cancer center hospitals in Tianjin, Chongqing, Hubei, Shanxi, Shandong, Shaanxi, Hebei, and Cangzhou were randomly divided into the morning radiotherapy group (MG; N = 61) and the evening radiotherapy group (EG; N = 53). The short-term efficacy of radiotherapy on cervical cancer patients at different time points and the occurrence of radiotoxicity were explored after patients had undergone radiotherapy., Results: The total effective response (partial remission [PR] + complete remission [CR]) rate was similar across the two groups (93.5% vs. 96.3%, p > 0.05). However, the incidence of bone marrow suppression and intestinal reaction in the two groups were significantly different ( p < 0.05). The patients in the MG had significantly higher Anderson symptom scores than patients in the EG (21.64 ± 7.916 vs. 18.53 ± 4.098, p < 0.05). In terms of physical activity, functional status, and overall QOL, the MG had significantly lower scores than the EG ( p < 0.05). No other measures showed a significant difference between the groups., Conclusion: The radiotherapy effect of the MG was consistent with that of the EG. The incidence of radiation enteritis and radiation diarrhea in the MG was significantly higher than that in the EG; however, bone marrow suppression and blood toxicity in the EG were more serious than in the MG. Because of the small sample size of the study, we only examined the short-term efficacy of radiotherapy. Visceral pain (VP) is the organ-derived nociception in which increased inflammatory reaction and exaggerated activation of the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) may contribute to this deficiency. Considering the amygdala also serves as the integration center for olfaction, the present study aimed to determine whether olfactory stimulation (OS) would effectively depress over-activation and inflammatory reaction in CeA, and successfully relieve VP-induced abnormalities. Adult rats subjected to intraperitoneal injection of acetic acid inhaled lavender essential oil for 2 or 4 h. The potential benefits of OS were determined by measuring the pro-inflammatory cytokine level, intracellular potassium and the upstream small-conductance calcium-activated potassium (SK) channel expression, together with detecting the stress transmitters that participated in the modulation of CeA activity. Results indicated that in VP rats, strong potassium intensity, reduced SK channel protein level, and increased corticotropin-releasing factor, c-fos, and substance P immuno-reactivities were detected in CeA. Enhanced CeA activation corresponded well with increased inflammatory reaction and decreased locomotion, respectively. However, in rats subjected to VP and received OS, all above parameters were significantly returned to normal levels with higher change detected in treating OS of 4h. As OS successfully depresses inflammation and CeA over-activation, application of OS may serve as an alternative and effective strategy to efficiently relieve VP-induced deficiency.

Background : Yunpi-Huoxue-Sanjie (YP-SJ) formula is a Chinese herbal formula with unique advantages for the treatment of diabetic cardiovascular complications, such as Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). However, potential targets and molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, our research was designed to evaluate rat myocardial morphology, fat metabolism and oxidative stress to verify myocardial protective effect of YP-SJ formula in vivo . And then to explore and validate its probable mechanism through network pharmacology and experiments in vitro and in vivo . Methods: In this study, DCM rats were randomly divided into five groups: control group, model group, and three YP-SJ formula groups (low-dose, middle-dose, and high-dose groups). Experimental rats were treated with 6 g/kg/d, 12 g/kg/d and 24 g/kg/d YP-SJ formula by gavage for 10 weeks, respectively. Cardiac function of rats was measured by high-resolution small-animal imaging system. The cells were divided into control group, high glucose group, high glucose + control serum group, high glucose + dosed serum group, high glucose + NC-siRNA group, high glucose + siRNA-FoxO1 group. The extent of autophagy was measured by flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, and western blotting. Results: It was found that YP-SJ formula could effectively improve cardiac systolic function in DCM rats. We identified 46 major candidate YP-SJ formula targets that are closely related to the progression of DCM. Enrichment analysis revealed key targets of YP-SJ formula related to environmental information processing, organic systems, and the metabolic occurrence of reactive oxygen species. Meanwhile, we verified that YP-SJ formula can increase the expression of forkhead box protein O1 (FoxO1), autophagy-related protein 7 (Atg7), Beclin 1, and light chain 3 (LC3), and decrease the expression of phosphorylated FoxO1 in vitro and in vivo . The results showed that YP-SJ formula could activate the FoxO1 signaling pathway associated with DCM rats. Further experiments showed that YP-SJ formula could improve cardiac function by regulating autophagy. The primary objective of this study was to determine the effects of vitamin D levels on peripheral pulse wave velocity (pPWV) following acute maximal exercise in healthy young adults. Fifty male healthy adults from National Chung Cheng University participated in the study. Participants were divided into the 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) sufficiency group (n = 28, 25(OH)D ≥ 50 nmol/L) and deficiency group (n = 22, 25(OH)D < 50 nmol/L). The acute maximal exercise was performed using an incremental cycling test to exhaustion. Additionally, the pPWV and blood pressure were obtained at rest and 0, 15, 30, 45, 60 min after acute maximal exercise. The results show that 25(OH)D deficiency group had higher pPWV at post-exercise (5.34 ± 0.71 vs. 4.79 ± 0.81 m/s, p < 0.05), post-exercise 15 min (5.13 ± 0.53 vs. 4.48 ± 0.66 m/s, p < 0.05) and post-exercise 30 min (5.26 ± 0.84 vs. 4.78 ± 0.50 m/s, p < 0.05) than the sufficiency group. Furthermore, there was a significant inverse correlation between 25(OH)D levels and pPWV following acute maximal exercise. Our study demonstrated that low vitamin D status relates to the poor response of pPWV following maximal exercise in healthy young men. Vitamin D deficiency may increase the risk of incident cardiovascular events after acute exhaustive exercise, even in healthy and active adults.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) potentially decrease all-cause and cardiovascular death, however, associations with non-cardiovascular death remain unclear. Therefore, we investigated SGLT2i associations with death and the cause of death. We used the Taiwanese National Health Institutes Research database linked to the National Register of Deaths (NRD). Incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and propensity score matched T2DM SGLT2i and Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor (DPP4i) users were investigated. The index year was the SGLT2i or DPP4i prescription date from May 2016. Patients were followed-up until death or December 2018. Deaths verified by the NRD and grouped accordingly. Multiple Cox proportional hazards models were used. In total, 261,211 patients were included in the population; 47% of the patients were female and the average age was 62 years. The overall incidence of all-cause death was 8.67/1000 patient-years for SGLT2i and 12.41 for DPP4i users during follow-up. After adjusting for potential risk factors in the propensity score matched population, SGLT2i users were associated with lower risks of all-cause death, cardiovascular death, cancer death, and non-cancer, non-vascular death compared with DPP4i-users. For specific death causes, significantly lower death risks from heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and accidents were associated with SGLT2i-use. Purpose: The applicability of mRNA vaccines against esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unclear. Here, we identified potential antigens for developing mRNA vaccines against ESCC and characterized immune subtypes to select appropriate patients for vaccination. Methods: RNA-seq, genetic alteration data, and corresponding clinical information of ESCC patients were obtained from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. The RNA-seq data of normal esophageal tissue were obtained from the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) database. Potential tumor antigens were screened by analyzing differentially expressed and mutated genes and potential antigens with significant differences in prognosis were screened using the Kaplan-Meier method. The proportion of immune cell infiltration in the tumor microenvironment was estimated using CIBERSORT and MCPcounter, and the correlation of potential antigens with antigen-presenting cells and major histocompatibility complex class II was analyzed. Subsequently, immune subtypes were constructed using consensus clustering analysis and characterized by single-sample gene set enrichment analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). The Genomics of Drug Sensitivity in Cancer (GDSC) database was used to analyze the drug sensitivity of different immune subtypes. Results: Four overexpressed and mutated tumor antigens associated with antigen presentation and poor prognosis were identified in ESCC, including NLRC5, FCRL4, TMEM229B, and LCP2. By consensus clustering, we identified two immune-associated ESCC subtypes, immune subtype 1 (IS1) and immune subtype 2 (IS2); the prognosis of the two subtypes was statistically different. In addition, the two immune subtypes had distinctly different cellular, molecular, and clinical characteristics. IS1 patients have a distinct immune "hot" phenotype with strong immune tolerance, whereas patients with IS2 have an immune "cold" phenotype. Differential expression of immune checkpoints and immunogenic cell death modulators was observed between the different immune subtypes. Finally, we found that IS1 and IS2 patients showed different drug sensitivities to common anti-tumor drugs, possibly facilitating the development of individualized treatment regimens for patients. Conclusion: NLRC5, LCP2, TMEM229B, and FCRL4 are potential antigens for ESCC mRNA vaccines, and such vaccines may be more suitable for IS2 patients. Many symmetric top molecules are among the most important polyatomic molecules. The orientation of a polyatomic molecule is a challenging task, which is at the heart of its quantum control and crucial for many subsequent applications in various fields. Most recent studies focus on the temporary orientation achieved via the quantum revivals. In this study, we reveal the underlying mechanism behind the observed permanent orientation and discuss strategies for a higher degree of permanent orientation. By a careful analysis of symmetry and unitary, it is possible to estimate an upper bound of ⟨⟨cosθ⟩⟩<(2-2)/4≈0.1464 for a molecule in its thermal equilibrium states using a linear field. We show that this bound can be reached for an oblate symmetric-top molecule in the high temperature limit. To demonstrate different possible schemes, we take CHCl 3 as an example. Simply with designed microwave fields, one can permanently orient CHCl 3 with a degree of ⟨cos θ⟩ ≈ 0.045. We show that this value can be significantly increased by adding one or more pump pulses.

Strong-field phenomena in solids exhibit extreme high-order nonlinear optical effects, which have triggered many theoretical and experimental investigations. However, there is still a lack of highly efficient numerical tools to simulate the relevant phenomena. In this paper, a versatile multiscale numerical tool set is developed for studying high-order nonlinear optical effects in solids, generated by ultrafast strong laser pulses. This tool is based on the tight-binding model approximation of the crystal structure, the related parameters of which are obtained from the density functional theory calculations. And the nonlinear effects are explored by solving the Maxwell equations coupled with the semiconductor Bloch equations. Our numerical tool can provide not only basic electronic structures and optical responses of the crystal, but also the real-time evolution of the macroscopic electromagnetic fields and the current density. The high-performance parallel computing and the interpolation method in our tool make it possible to study the strong-field nonlinear responses and propagation effects on a large spatial and temporal scale. Finally, three theoretical or experimental results published recently are satisfactorily reproduced, showing a good performance of the current toolbox.

Phenol is one of the major organic pollutants in high salt industrial wastewaters. The biological treatment of such waste using microorganisms is considered to be a cost-effective and eco-friendly method. However, in this process, salt tolerance of microorganisms is one of the main limiting factors. Halophilic microorganisms, especially halophilic archaea are thought to be appropriate for such treatment. To develop a novel effective biological method for high salt phenol wastewater treatment, the influence of phenol in high salt phenol wastewater on halophilic archaea and their extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) should be investigated. In the present study, using phenol enrichment method, 75 halophilic archaeal strains were isolated from Wuyongbulake salt lake sediment sample. The majority of the identified strains were phenol-tolerant. Six strains with high phenol tolerance were chosen, and the phenol scavenging effect was observed in the microbial suspension, supernatant, and EPS. It was noticed that the phenol degradation rate of suspensions of both strains 869-1, and 121-1 in salt water exhibited the highest rates of 83.7%, while the supernatant of strain 869-1 reached the highest rate of 78.2%. When combined with the comprehensive analysis of the artificial wastewater simulation experiment, it was discovered that in the artificial wastewater containing phenol, the phenol degradation rate of suspension of strain A387 exhibited the highest rates of 55.74% both, and supernatant of strain 630-3 reached the highest rate of 62.3%. The EPS produced by strains A00135, 558-1, 869-1, 121-1 and A387 removed 100% phenol within 96 h, and the phenol removal efficiency of EPS produced by 869-1 reached 56.1% under an artificial wastewater simulation experiment with high salt (15%NaCl) condition. The present study suggests that halophilic archaea and their EPS play an important role in phenol degradation. Limited literature has explored the effect of air pollutants on chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression, especially for patients with pre-end-stage renal disease (pre-ESRD). In this study, we reported the linear and nonlinear relationships of air pollutants of particles with diameter <2.5 μm (PM 2.5 ) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) deterioration after adjusting for smoking status and other traditional clinical factors. This study adopted a retrospective cohort of patients with stage 3b to stage 5 CKD ( N = 11,479) from Taichung Veterans General Hospital during January 2006 to December 2020. The eGFR deterioration was defined as a decline in eGFR > 5 ml/min/1.73 m 2 /year. Hybrid kriging/land-use regression models were used to estimate the individual exposure levels of PM 2.5 and NO 2 . The relationships of air pollutants with eGFR deterioration were evaluated using Cox proportional hazard models. After adjusting for smoking status, baseline eGFR stages, and other traditional clinical factors, the risk of eGFR deterioration was found to increase with increasing PM 2.5 and NO 2 level ( p < 0.0001 and p = 0.041, respectively), especially for those exposed to PM 2.5 ≥ 31.44 μg/m 3 or NO 2 ≥ 15.00 ppb. Similar results were also found in the two-pollutant models. Nonlinear dose-response relationships of eGFR deterioration were observed for concentrations of 26.11 μg/m 3 for PM 2.5 and 15.06 ppb for NO 2 . Aim: We aimed to establish a prognostic nomogram for penile cancer (PC) patients based on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) database., Methods: Data from 1643 patients between 2010 and 2015 were downloaded and extracted from the SEER database. They were randomly divided into the development group (70%) and the verification group (30%), and then, univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression, respectively, was used to explore the possible risk factors of PC. The factors significantly related to overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) were used to establish the nomogram, which was assessed via the concordance index (C-index), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and calibration curve. An internal validation was conducted to test the accuracy and effectiveness of the nomogram. Kaplan-Meier calculation was used to predict the further OS and CSS status of these patients., Results: On multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression, the independent prognostic risk factors associated with OS were age, race, marital status, N/M stage, surgery, surgery of lymph nodes, and histologic type, with a moderate C-index of 0.737 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.713-0.760) and 0.766 (95% CI: 0.731-0.801) in the development and verification groups, respectively. The areas under the ROC (AUC) of 3- and 5-year OS were 0.749 and 0.770, respectively. While marital status, N/M stage, surgery, surgery of lymph nodes, and histologic type were significantly linked to PC patients' CSS, which have better C-index of 0.802 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.771-0.833) and 0.82 (95% CI: 0.775-0.865) in the development and verification groups, and the AUC of 3- and 5-year CSS were 0.766 and 0.787. We theoretically investigate the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) of the monolayer hexagonal boron nitride by two-color laser pulses, based on the ab initio time-dependent density-functional theory. We find that the waveform of the two-color laser field can dramatically control the harmonic spectrum. The two-color laser field can enhance the harmonic radiation more efficiently than the monochromatic pulse laser with the same incident energy. We investigate the influence of incident laser pulse parameters on the harmonic radiation, such as the relative phase of the two-color field, the amplitude ratio between component electric fields, and the laser orientation. We show that the HHG spectrum is controlled by both the electric field and the vector potential. The electronic band structure and the laser-matter energy transfer play an important role in determining the laser polarization for optimal HHG in the hBN crystal. Our work supplies a scheme to manipulate HHGs in two-dimensional materials and provides a potential methodology for the generation of intense extreme-ultraviolet pulses.

Two extremely halophilic strains, designated SYSU A558-1 T and SYSU A121-1, were isolated from a saline sediment sample collected from Aiding salt-lake, China. Cells of strains SYSU A558-1 T and SYSU A121-1 were Gram-stain-negative, coccoid, and non-motile. The strains were aerobic and grew at NaCl concentration of 10-30% (optimum, 20-22%), at 20-55 °C (optimum, 37-42 °C) and at pH 6.5-8.5 (optimum, 7.0-8.0). Cells lysed in distilled water. The polar lipids were phosphatidyl choline, phosphatidylglycerol phosphate methyl ester, disulfated diglycosyl diether-1 and unidentified glycolipid. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the two strains SYSU A558-1 T and SYSU A121-1 were closely related to the membranes of the genus Haloterrigena. Phylogenetic and phylogenomic trees of strains SYSU A558-1 T and SYSU A121-1 demonstrated a robust clade with Haloterrigena turkmenica, Haloterrigena salifodinae and Haloterrigena salina. The genomic DNA G + C content of strains SYSU A558-1 T and SYSU A121-1 were 65.8 and 65.0%, respectively. Phenotypic, phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and genome analysis suggested that the two strains SYSU A558-1 T and SYSU A121-1 represent a novel species of the genus Haloterrigena, for which the name Haloterrigena gelatinilytica sp. nov. is proposed.
