This study aimed to investigate the impact of the dosage and duration of fluoride and aluminum(F and Al) co-exposure on the skeletal growth and bone quality of juvenile rats. Forty-eight 8-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to normal control, low F and Al exposure, and high F and Al exposure groups, with 45-day and 90-day subgroups established for each. We measured body length, tibia length, conducted bone histomorphometric analysis of the proximal tibia, performed micro-CT scans and three-point bending tests of the femur. Compared to the age-matched control group, the low F and Al group at 45 days exhibited increased bone formation and stiffness; the low F and Al group at 90 days and the high F and Al group at 45 days showed increases in body length, tibia length, growth plate width, longitudinal bone growth rate, bone turnover, and improved microstructure. Notably, bone elastic stress only elevated in the high F and Al group at 45 days. Conversely, the high F and Al exposure group at 90 days experienced decreases in the aforementioned parameters, with the exception of growth plate width, and displayed abnormal hypertrophic chondrocyte morphology in the growth plate. In summary, long-term exposure to low levels of F and Al and short-term exposure to high levels of F and Al promote bone formation followed by bone resorption in juvenile rats, stimulating bone growth and enhancing bone quality. Objective: Myocardial infarction (MI) is a cause of high morbidity and mortality in the world. Sodium tanshinone IIA sulphonate (STS) has been well used in Oriental medicine for treating cardiovascular diseases, however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Alterations of circulating lipid profiles, increased fatty acid β-oxidation and oxidative stress play most important roles in the pathogenesis of MI. The present study aims to elucidate whether STS possesses cardioprotective effect against MI driven by isoproterenol (ISO), and to investigate its potential mechanisms of action., Methods: MI was induced by subcutaneous injection of ISO (85 mg/kg at interval of 24 h for 2 consecutive days) to rats. The rats were randomly divided into 6 groups: (1) control; (2) ISO; (3) STS (16 mg/kg) +control; (4-6) STS (16, 8, 4 mg/kg) +ISO., Results: Our study showed that STS could ameliorate cardiac dysfunction and variation of myocardial zymogram, up-regulate antioxidant systems, and maintain the levels of circulating lipids driven by supramaximal doses ISO as well. Moreover, modulation of redox-sensitive extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2)/Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC)/carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT) 1 pathways were involved in STS induced cardioprotection., Conclusions: STS exerts strong favorable cardioprotective action. Additionally, the properties of STS, such as anti-dyslipidemia, anti-oxidant and inhibition of fatty acid β-oxidation, may be the mechanisms underlying the observed results., (© 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. 7878 patients with tumors in the head and neck confirmed by pathology from Jan. 1961 to Dec. 1981 are analysed. In this series, there were 5485 malignant tumors and 2393 benign. In malignant tumors, the ratio of male to female was 2.84:1 while the mean age incidence was 53.38 years. Nearly half of malignant tumors were in the nasopharynx (49.32%). Of the 2716 nasopharyngeal malignant tumors, 2698 were carcinoma and only 18 sarcoma. Male was 3.5 times higher than female. The mean age of NPC was 53.64 years in male and 52.33 years in female. Nine of them were under 10 years of age and the youngest was 3 years old. There was 87.06% of squamous cell carcinoma in NPC. Adenocarcinoma was predominant in the minor salivary gland carcinomas. The malignant tumors in the eyeball were glioma retinae of which 96.15% was under 10 years of age. The common metastatic tumor in the neck was squamous cell carcinoma. The incidence of head and neck tumors was 37.66% and that of the head and neck malignancies was 26.22% of tumors in the whole body. This study indicates that the incidence of malignant tumor in the head and neck is rather high.
