Spiradiclis yanii Y.Nong & L.Wu (Rubiaceae), a new species from Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. This new species is most similar to S. tomentosa, but it can be easily distinguished by being densely multicellular villous, leaves narrow elliptic or oblanceolate, apex acute or shortly acuminate, stipules 2–4, linear or linear lanceolate, 4–8 mm, densely villous, corolla tube 3 mm, sparsely pubescent inside, flower homomorphism, lobes 3–5, stamens arising at the base of the tube, stigma 2-lobed, lobes ovoid, slightly swollen, 0.2 mm. The habitat of Spiradiclis yanii is extremely fragile. Therefore, this species deserves close attention and protection.

Abstract To determine the role of internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) in the identification of Spatholobus suberectus and explore the genetic diversity of S. suberectus. A total of 292 ITS2s from S. suberectus and 17 other plant species were analysed. S. suberectus was clustered separately in the phylogenetic tree. The genetic distance between species was greater than that within S. suberectus. Synonymous substitution rate (Ks) analysis revealed that ITS2 diverged the most recently within S. suberectus (Ks = 0.0022). These findings suggested that ITS2 is suitable for the identification of S. suberectus. The ITS2s were divided into 8 haplotypes and 4 evolutionary branches on the basis of secondary structure, indicating that there was variation within S. suberectus. Evolutionary analysis revealed that the GC content of paired regions (pGC) was greater than that of unpaired regions (upGC), and the pGC showed a decreasing trend, whereas the upGC remained unchanged. Single-base mutation was the main cause of base pair substitution. In both the initial state and the equilibrium state, the substitution rate of GC was higher than that of AU. The increase in the GC content was partly attributed to GC-biased gene conversion (gBGC). High GC content reflected the high recombination and mutation rates of ITS2, which is the basis for species identification and genetic diversity. We characterized the sequence and structural characteristics of S. suberectus ITS2 in detail, providing a reference and basis for the identification of S. suberectus and its products, as well as the protection and utilization of wild resources.

Cyrtomium adenotrichum Y. Nong & R.H. Jiang (Dryopteridaceae), a new species from Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. This new species is similar to C. nephrolepioides (Christ) Copel., C. obliquum Ching & K. H. Shing ex K. H. Shing, C. sinningense Ching & K. H. Shing ex K. H. Shing and C. calcis Liang Zhang, N.T.Lu & Li Bing Zhang in having erect rhizomes, dense, leathery lamina and rounded sori, but it can be easily distinguishable by its stipe sparsely glandular, base obvious oblique, basiscopic base truncate, acroscopic base auriculate or ovate.

Abstract Background Global studies exploring the relationship between parity and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are scarce. Furthermore, no study has examined the relationship between parity and CKD in Japan. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the relationship between parity and the prevalence of CKD in a Japanese population, considering the clinical history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and current body mass index (BMI) based on menopausal status. Methods This cross-sectional study included 26,945 Japanese multiparous women (5,006 premenopausal and 21,939 postmenopausal women) and 3,247 nulliparous women (1,599 premenopausal and 1,648 postmenopausal women). Participants were divided into two groups based on their menopausal status (premenopausal and postmenopausal women). The relationship between parity and the prevalence of CKD was evaluated using a multiple logistic regression model adjusted for several covariates, including a clinical history of HDP and current BMI. Results The relationship between parity and the prevalence of CKD was not statistically significant in either premenopausal or postmenopausal multiparous women. A clinical history of HDP was significantly associated with an increased risk of CKD in premenopausal and postmenopausal multiparous women. However, the relationship between a clinical history of HDP and CKD in premenopausal women was weakened after adjusting for current BMI. Furthermore, the current BMI was significantly associated with an increased risk of CKD in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Conclusions Parity is not significantly associated with the prevalence of CKD in premenopausal and postmenopausal multiparous women. A clinical history of HDP is a risk factor for CKD in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Current BMI is also associated with an increased risk of CKD in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Therefore, continuous surveillance and preventive measures against CKD should be provided to women with a clinical history of HDP. In addition, maintaining an appropriate body weight is beneficial in reducing the risk of CKD.

In Jeju Island, South Korea, a patient who consumed raw pig products had subdural empyema, which led to meningitis, sepsis, and status epilepticus. We identified Streptococcus suis from blood and the subdural empyema. This case illustrates the importance of considering dietary habits in similar clinical assessments to prevent misdiagnosis.

Abstract This study investigated the association of parity with hypertension prevalence in Japanese women while considering a clinical history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and menopausal status. This cross‐sectional study included 30,530 Japanese women (6700 premenopausal; 23 830 postmenopausal). The association between parity and the prevalence of hypertension was evaluated using a multiple logistic regression model with possible confounders. In premenopausal women, no statistically significant association between parity and hypertension prevalence was found. When not adjusted for current body mass index (BMI), a linear graded association was observed between parity and the prevalence of hypertension in postmenopausal women. However, the association between parity and hypertension prevalence in postmenopausal women was attenuated after adjustment for current BMI. Both current BMI and a clinical history of HDP were significantly associated with a high risk of hypertension in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Our results also suggest that continuous surveillance and preventive measures for hypertension should be provided for women with HDP and high parity.

Aletris guangxiensis Y. Nong & Y. F. Huang (Nartheciaceae), a new species from Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. This new species is most similar to A. scopulorum, but it can be easily distinguished by its sparsely glandular, 5–18 cm long scape, glandular inflorescence axis, distinctly pedicellate flowers, sparsely glandular, 5–10 mm long pedicel, bract borne at base of pedicel, glabrous perianth divided to the base, strongly recurved or revolute perianth lobes and turbinate, obovoid to oblong-obovoid capsule. An identification key for 24 species and 1 hybrid of Aletris is also provided.

Lysimachia cavicola (Subgen. Idiophyton, Primulaceae), a new species from Guangxi, China, is here described and illustrated based on morphological data. Although it shares similarities with L. microcarpa, L. fooningensis, and L. capillipes, there are distinguishing characteristics that set it apart. These include erect stems either solitary or in clusters of 1 to 2, herbaceous, terete, and densely glandular hairy. The leaves are either ovate or elliptical lanceolate, with inconspicuously reticulate veins. The petiole measures 2–4 mm in length covered with minute glandular hairy. The corolla is deeply parted, measuring 6–8 mm in length, with narrowly elliptic or narrowly oblong lobes that are 1–2 mm wide. The capsule is globose, measuring 2–3 × 2–3 mm, and possesses a chalky, brittle texture, which splits into 5-valved segments. The calyx of the plant appears yellowish-white during fruiting. This newly discovered species is endemic to limestone areas in Fengshan County, Guangxi, China.

Walsura guangxiensis (Meliaceae), a new species from Guangxi, China, is here described and illustrated. The new species is easily distinguishable from the other two Chinese members of the genus by its petals being pale yellow, filaments being connate into tubes above the middle, the berry being oval and glabrous. An identification key of Walsura for 17 species is also provided.

Abstract Background The deep learning-based nodule detection (DLD) system improves nodule detection performance of observers on chest radiographs (CXRs). However, its performance in different pulmonary nodule (PN) locations remains unknown. Methods We divided the CXR intrathoracic region into non-danger zone (NDZ) and danger zone (DZ). The DZ included the lung apices, paramediastinal areas, and retrodiaphragmatic areas, where nodules could be missed. We used a dataset of 300 CXRs (100 normal and 200 abnormal images with 216 PNs [107 NDZ and 109 DZ nodules]). Eight observers (two thoracic radiologists [TRs], two non-thoracic radiologists [NTRs], and four radiology residents [RRs]) interpreted each radiograph with and without the DLD system. The metric of lesion localization fraction (LLF; the number of correctly localized lesions divided by the total number of true lesions) was used to evaluate the diagnostic performance according to the nodule location. Results The DLD system demonstrated a lower LLF for the detection of DZ nodules (64.2) than that of NDZ nodules (83.2, p = 0.008). Mitreola quanruii , a new species from Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated in this study. It is morphologically similar to M. liuyanii because of the terete stems, creeping and branched at the base, the leaves which are pilose on both surfaces and the bilobed capsules with two erect horns. The new species can be distinguished from M. liuyanii by its taller habit, up to 20–50 cm tall, its linear leaves, 4–18 × 0.3–1 cm with acuminate apex and 8–10 pairs of lateral veins, its narrowly triangular stipules, its linear bracts, ca. 1.0 cm long and glabrous and its glabrous calyx. Mitreola quanruii is temporarily assessed as data deficient (DD) according to IUCN. The habitat of Mitreola quanruii is extremely fragile. Therefore, this species deserves close attention and protection.

Abstract Background Baiku Yao is an ancient branch of the Yao people in China who have the custom of maintaining homegardens. The local government has relocated some villagers to improve their livelihood. To study the characteristics of Baiku Yao homegardens and the impact of relocation, we conducted an ethnobotanical study on homegardens in the relocated villages of Huaili and Yaozhai and in the ancient villages of Yaoshan and Duonu from January 2019 to May 2022. Method Data on homegarden plants were collected through semi-structured interviews with homegarden households. A total of 4 villages (i.e., two relocated and two ancient villages) were selected for detailed investigation. In each village, 60 homegardens were chosen randomly. In addition, the RFC index and Jaccard value were used to analyze and evaluate the homegarden plants we recorded. Result The study recorded a total of 213 species of homegarden plants with approximately 11 functions. Baiku Yao homegardens are small in size but rich in species and functions, and their utilization efficiency is extremely high. The Jaccard value shows that the homegarden plants in Huaili and Yaozhai have the highest similarity. Neighborhood sharing and market purchasing are the two most important sources of local homegarden plants. Additionally, medicine and food are the two most important uses of homegarden plants. Ornamental plants also play a significant part, especially in relocated villages. The comparisons indicate that the diversity of homegarden plants in the investigated ancient villages is better preserved than in relocated villages. Due to frequent exchanges between the villages and the outside world, Yaoshan Village, as an older relocated village, maintains a good traditional culture in its homegardens. As a newly relocated village, Duonu Community has developed a complicated homegarden system with only much less plant diversity. The development of local tourism has also impacted the composition of homegarden plants. The study found that plants such as Zea mays, Morus alba, and Capsicum annuum are closely related to local life and livelihood. Conclusion The traditional knowledge of homegarden plants in investigated ancient villiages maintained good diversity and has been affected much less by the modernization and tourism industry development compared to the relocated villages. The composition of homegarden plants is closely connected to the local livelihood. In the future development of Baiku Yao communities, protecting homegarden plant diversity and functional diversity is crucial.

Baiku Yao like to raise and eat local black pigs, and they are very good at collecting and managing forage plants. This study aimed to make an ethnobotanical inventory of forage plants and their related native knowledge in the Baiku Yao area, provide data support for the preservation of their traditional knowledge, and provide ideas for the development of modern new types of forage. From 2019 to 2021, we went to the local area for ethnobotanical investigation of forage plants, using key formant interviews, semi-structured interviews, and group discussions. Additionally, we had screened out the forage plants with high comprehensive utilization value according to scoring and ranking and their usage frequency. The results were as follows: (1) A total of 104 forage plant species were recorded, belonging to 42 families and 85 genera. The family with the most cited species was Asteraceae (16 species, accounting for 15.38% of the total species), followed by Urticaceae (13 species, accounting for 12.5% of the total species). (2) Branches and leaves (56.73%), whole plant (26.92%) and leaves (8.65%) were the main used parts of local forage plants, accounting for 92.30% of the recorded plants. Most forage plants were herbaceous plants (88.46%). There were adequate forage plants (accounting for 64.42% of the total) that could be collected to feed pigs in almost all seasons. (3) Chopping, crushing, and cooking feed plants were the main preparation methods of pig forage. (4) The most frequently cited local species were Zea mays, Broussonetia papyrifera, Ipomoea batatas, Morus alba, Fagopyrum dibotrys and Oryza sativa. (5) The local forage plants with high comprehensive evaluation were Broussonetia papyrifera, Ipomoea batatas, Morus alba, Fagopyrum dibotrys and Cucurbita moschata. The local people have rich traditional knowledge about the use and management of forage plants for pigs, which are very scientific and well preserved, and the related forage plant resources are also worthy of further development and promotion.

Anti-IgLON5 disease is a recently defined autoimmune disorder of the nervous system associated with autoantibodies against IgLON5. Given its broad clinical spectrum and extremely complex pathogenesis, as well as difficulties in its early diagnosis and treatment, anti-IgLON5 disease has become the subject of considerable research attention in the field of neuroimmunology. Anti-IgLON5 disease has characteristics of both autoimmunity and neurodegeneration due to the unique activity of the anti-IgLON5 antibody. Neuropathologic examination revealed the presence of a tauopathy preferentially affecting the hypothalamus and brainstem tegmentum, potentially broadening our understanding of tauopathies. In contrast to that seen with other autoimmune encephalitis-related antibodies, basic studies have demonstrated that IgLON5 antibody-induced neuronal damage and degeneration are irreversible, indicative of a potential link between autoimmunity and neurodegeneration in anti-IgLON5 disease. Herein, we comprehensively review and discuss basic and clinical studies relating to anti-IgLON5 disease to better understand this complicated disorder.

Abstract Realistic image synthesis based on deep learning is an invaluable technique for developing high-performance computer aided diagnosis systems while protecting patient privacy. However, training a generative adversarial network (GAN) for image synthesis remains challenging because of the large amounts of data required for training various kinds of image features. This study aims to synthesize retinal images indistinguishable from real images and evaluate the efficacy of the synthesized images having a specific disease for augmenting class imbalanced datasets. The synthesized images were validated via image Turing tests, qualitative analysis by retinal specialists, and quantitative analyses on amounts and signal-to-noise ratios of vessels. The efficacy of synthesized images was verified by deep learning-based classification performance. Turing test shows that accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 54.0 ± 12.3%, 71.1 ± 18.8%, and 36.9 ± 25.5%, respectively. Here, sensitivity represents correctness to find real images among real datasets. Vessel amounts and average SNR comparisons show 0.43% and 1.5% difference between real and synthesized images. The classification performance after augmenting synthesized images outperforms every ratio of imbalanced real datasets. Our study shows the realistic retina images were successfully generated with insignificant differences between the real and synthesized images and shows great potential for practical applications.

Ensuring the safety of tunnel structures in unique underwater environments is of paramount importance. This study focuses on the entrance section of a river-crossing tunnel, characterized by shallow burial depths with significant variations. The tunnel structure faces challenges related to structural weakening, and its deformation response exhibits specific characteristics under seismic loads. Numerical simulation software was employed to model and calculate the deformation response of the shallowly buried entrance section under seismic load conditions, assessing the impact of changes in tunnel structural strength and burial depth. The results reveal the following key findings: (1) As the tunnel structure weakens, structures of varying strengths primarily experience vertical deformation under seismic loads, followed by horizontal deformation. Furthermore, as the tunnel structure’s strength decreases, it exhibits an increasing trend in deformation. Routine maintenance should prioritize locations where the tunnel structure weakens, implementing timely reinforcement measures to ensure adequate load-bearing capacity. (2) Considering the influence of tunnel structural burial depth, lateral deformation values rank in descending order from largest to smallest, including the tunnel bottom, middle carriageway, middle of the tunnel, and tunnel vault, while the overall lateral deformation of the tunnel is not significant, it decreases as the structural burial depth increases. (3) In relation to tunnel structural burial depth, vertical deformation values generally exceed horizontal deformation values. Sections with the highest to lowest deformation values are the tunnel bottom, middle lane of the tunnel, middle of the tunnel, and position of the tunnel vault. With increasing burial depth, the vertical deformation values decrease at a slower rate than horizontal deformation. The tunnel structure demonstrates a higher sensitivity of lateral deformation to changes in burial depth factors.

Objectives: Changes in the epidemiology of group A streptococcus (GAS) infection is related to emm genotype. We studied the distribution of emm genotypes and their antibiotic susceptibility among Korean children. Methods: Isolates from children with GAS infection between 2012 and 2019 were collected. emm typing and cluster analysis was performed according to the Centers for Disease Control emm cluster classification. Antimicrobial susceptibility was tested using the E-test and resistance genes were analyzed for macrolide resistant phenotypes. Results: Among 169 GAS isolates, 115 were from children with scarlet fever. Among invasive isolates, emm1 (6/22, 27.3%), emm12 (4/22, 18.2%), and emm4 (4/22, 18.2%) were most common. In scarlet fever, although emm4 (38/115, 33.0%) was the most prevalent throughout the study period, emm4 was replaced by emm3 (28/90, 31.1%) during an outbreak in 2017–2018. Among all isolates, only 2 (1.2%) exhibited erythromycin resistance and harbored both ermA and ermB genes. Conclusions: In this analysis of GAS isolated from Korean children, emm1 was the most prevalent in invasive infection. In scarlet fever, emm4 was prevalent throughout the study period, with an increase in emm3 during 2017–2018. GAS isolates during 2012–2019 demonstrated low erythromycin resistance.

Abstract Background Anti-IgLON5 disease is a rare neurological disorder associated with autoantibodies against the neuronal cell adhesion protein, IgLON5. Cellular investigations with human IgLON5 antibodies have suggested an antibody-mediated pathogenesis, but whether human IgLON5 autoantibodies can induce disease symptoms in mice is yet to be shown. Moreover, the effects of anti-IgLON5 autoantibodies on neurons and the precise molecular mechanisms in vivo remain controversial. Methods We investigated the effects of anti-IgLON5 antibodies in vivo and evaluated their long-term effects. We used two independent passive-transfer animal models and evaluated the effects of the antibodies on mouse behaviors at different time points from day 1 until day 30 after IgG infusion. A wide range of behaviors, including tests of locomotion, coordination, memory, anxiety, depression and social interactions were established. At termination, brain tissue was analyzed for human IgG, neuronal markers, glial markers, synaptic markers and RNA sequencing. Results These experiments showed that patient’s anti-IgLON5 antibodies induced progressive and irreversible behavioral deficits in vivo. Notably, cognitive abnormality was supported by impaired average gamma power in the CA1 during novel object recognition testing. Accompanying brain tissue studies showed progressive increase of brain-bound human antibodies in the hippocampus of anti-IgLON5 IgG-injected mice, which persisted 30 days after the injection of patient’s antibodies was stopped. Microglial and astrocyte density was increased in the hippocampus of anti-IgLON5 IgG-injected mice at Day 30. Whole-cell voltage clamp recordings proved that anti-IgLON5 antibodies affected synaptic homeostasis. Further western blot investigation of synaptic proteins revealed a reduction of presynaptic (synaptophysin) and post-synaptic (PSD95 and NMDAR1) expression in anti-IgLON5 IgG-injected mice. Conclusions Overall, our findings indicated an irreversible effect of anti-IgLON5 antibodies and supported the pathogenicity of these antibodies in vivo.

The Baiku Yao community in China has traditionally used the Lindera pulcherrima var. attenuate (LPA) leaves as a staple food source, diverging from the common reliance on grains and plant roots worldwide. This study comprehensively analyzes LPA’s nutritional composition and local usage practices through field observations and laboratory testing. Our results show that LPA contains significant levels of starch, protein, and dietary fiber and is rich in trace elements, vitamin E, and flavonoids. These findings not only support the community’s traditional knowledge of LPA as a valuable food and feed source but also highlight its potential as a sustainable and innovative ingredient for new food and feed products. By filling a gap in our scientific understanding of LPA, this study may contribute to developing novel and eco-friendly agricultural practices and promote regional economic growth.

The Kinh people of China have historically migrated from Tushan and other areas of Vietnam since the 16th century. They are now settled in Fangchenggang City in the Beibu Gulf region of Guangxi, China. The local Kinh people have lived by fishing and have a rich fishing culture. Accordingly, the Kinh people of China have a long history of using traditional marine animal drugs for their daily medicinal needs. However, with the advent of modern medicine, there is a risk of losing the valuable traditional knowledge of marine animal drugs. Thus, this study aimed to document the types of marine animal drugs and related traditional knowledge of the Kinh people and explore the sustainability of their access to marine animal drugs. Ethnobiological methods, including snowball sampling and semi-structured interviews are used to collect information about the animal drugs used locally during the study. Through field investigations in the “Three Islands of Kinh,” we collected ethnozoological data on 61 marine animal drugs belonging to 52 families across six animal phyla. Chordata and Mollusca are the most represented phyla, while Arthropoda, Echinodermata, Sipuncula, and Cnidaria are less represented. According to the analysis, animal meat is the most frequent medicinal part; the Kinh prefer decoction or making soup, and internal administration is the most frequent use mode. Our statistical analysis revealed that nourishing was the most common purpose for the recorded marine animal drugs in the study area. Our study found that 6 documented species are listed as threatened on the IUCN Red List but receive little targeted protection. The article provides recommendations for protecting traditional knowledge, promoting sustainable development of marine resources, and conserving endangered species.
