Carbon capture, storage, and utilization (CCSU) is recognized as an effective method to reduce the excessive emission of CO2. Absorption by amine aqueous solutions is considered highly efficient for CO2 capture from the flue gas because of the large CO2 capture capacity and high selectivity. However, it is often limited by the equipment corrosion and the high desorption energy consumption, and adsorption of CO2 using solid adsorbents has been receiving more attention in recent years due to its simplicity and high efficiency. More recently, a great number of porous organic polymers (POPs) have been designed and constructed for CO2 capture, and they are proven promising solid adsorbents for CO2 capture due to their high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area (SBET), adjustable pore size and easy functionalization. In particular, they usually have rigid skeleton, permanent porosity, and good physiochemical stability. In this review, we have a detailed review for the different POPs developed in recent years, not only the design strategy, but also the special structure for CO2 capture. The outlook of the opportunities and challenges of the POPs is also proposed.

Herein, with black phosphorus (BP) as a model pyroelectric nanocatalyst, we explored the potential of cold-catalysts for antitumor therapy. BP nanosheets with pyro-catalytic activity catalyze the generation of oxidative stress to activate antitumor immunity under cold treatment. Due to the cold-catalytic immunomodulation, immune memory was successfully achieved to prevent tumor metastasis and recurrence. Considering the safety and conductive depth (10 mm) of cold in the body, pyroelectric nanocatalysts open up exciting opportunities for the development of cold-catalytic nanomedicine.

Transition metal sulfides (TMSs)-based materials have been extensively investigated as effective non-noble catalysts for various applications. However, the exploration of TMSs-based catalysts for hydrogenation of nitro compounds is limited. Herein, CoSx/NC catalysts were prepared by solvothermal sulfurization of ZIF-67, followed by high-temperature annealing (300–600 °C) under NH3 atmosphere. It was found that the structures and compositions of the as-prepared CoSx/NC can be readily tuned by varying the annealing temperature. Particularly, CoSx/NC-500, which possesses higher degree of S defects and larger specific surface areas, can achieve high conversion, selectivity and stability for catalytic reduction of nitro compounds into amines under mild reaction conditions.

Sn-based anode materials have gained more attention for application in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), due to tin having the characteristics of high specific capacity, low cost, and environmentally friendly. However, low capacity retention due to the large volume changes upon lithiation/delithiation limits their further development. In this paper, tin nanoparticle/3D framework carbon composite (denoted as Sn@SC) is obtained by calcining the composite of trisodium citrate and stannous sulfide. The Sn@SC composite delivers a stable cycling capacity of 410.9 mAh/g after 150 cycles and 300.1 mAh/g after 950 cycles at 1 A/g. The excellent electrochemical performance can be assigned to the fact that the hollow porous carbon can provide enough space for the volume change of tin nanoparticles in the step-by-step alloying process and shorten the electron transport path, thus increasing the structural stability and rate capability.

An injectable gellan gum-based nanocomposite hydrogel (Bi2S3@GG) was designed for X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging and photothermal/antiangiogenic therapy. The linear anionic polysaccharide gellan gum (GG) was used as a stabilizer, embedded with ultra-small bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) nanodots (∼2 nm) through a one-pot synthesis method. The as-prepared Bi2S3@GG hydrogel displays excellent capability for both photothermal therapy (PTT) (with a photothermal conversion efficiency of 44.3%) and X-ray computed tomography (with an X-ray absorption coefficient of 51.5 HU L g-1), integrated with real-time monitoring drug retention and tunable therapeutic functions. After the incorporation of sorafenib (SF), the hydrogel shows a sustained release of SF over 15 days. A tumor suppression rate of 98.2% is shown at day 22 postinjection in the mice received the combined treatments of photothermal/antiangiogenic therapy. In contrast, tumor growth and recurrence are observed in the single treatment. Our work presents a new strategy to construct a multifunctional hydrogel platform for a safe and precise antitumor therapy.

Conjugated porous polymers with rapid separation of photogenerated charges and multiple catalytic pathways remain a great challenge. Herein, two ferrocene-based polymers (Fc-CPPs) with high charge separation efficiency and unique dual catalytic routes for Cr(vi) reduction were developed. They exhibited an excellent efficiency, with almost 99% of Cr(vi) readily converted to Cr(iii) under 15 min of visible light illumination (λ > 420 nm).

Melamine-based porous organic polymers (POPs) are promising for gas uptake and water treatment because of their unique and tunable porosity, high nitrogen (N) content, and high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area (SBET). However, it is difficult to construct ketone-based POPs by the Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction. Herein, the ketone-based POPs were postfunctionalized with melamine (MA) by the Schiff-based reaction and the rigid triazine rings of MA were embedded in the polymer chains as rigid cross-linkers, resulting in the polymers with high SBET (555 m2·g-1) and total pore volume (0.72 cm3·g-1). Moreover, plentiful imine, amino, and triazine functionalities were inserted in the polymers, providing the polymers with high N content of 41.83 wt %. The resulting polymers were promising for CO2 capture (145 mg·g-1; 273 K, 1.0 bar) and Hg2+ removal (372 mg·g-1). This study offers a universal strategy to construct melamine-based POPs from various ketone-functionalized HCPs via a simple postfunctionalization.

Metal-oxide catalysts have great potential in efficient CO2 electroreduction (CO2ER). Unfortunately, many catalysts exhibit limited selectivity for carbon products at the high current density. Here, density functional theory is applied to analyzethe active sites on SnO2 matrix surface. The theoretical analysis indicates that the elimination of oxygen atoms from SnO2 matrix can significantly improve CO2 activation and suppress H2. Inspired by the analysis, a series of defect-engineered SnO2 nanocubes are synthesized. The as-prepared SnO2 with rich oxygen vacancy (Vo-rich SnO2) possesses C1 selectivity of 92.5% at −44.2 mA cm−2 which is higher than pristine SnO2 (78.1% at −18.2 mA cm−2), and reaches 30 h stability. Furthermore, the CO2ER activity in a 10% CO2 atmosphere is studied for the first time, where Vo-rich SnO2 demonstrates C1 selectivity of 74.5%. This work testifies the potential of theory-guided strategy to design practicaltin-oxide electrocatalysts and firstly highlights the research of industrial flue gas for CO2ER.

Nickel is a promising catalyst for the hydrogenation of furfural (FA) into furfuryl alcohol (FOL) and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (TFOL). However, slow H* desorption and low catalytic selectivity limit its practical application. Herein, we employed an alloying strategy to tailoring the d-band center of Ni by Cu for efficient and selective catalytic hydrogenation of furfural. A series of Ni-Cu alloy catalysts (NiCux/C) were prepared by pyrolyzing NiCux-BTC (a MOF containing Cu and Ni) precursors. Theoretical calculation demonstrates that Ni exhibits a downshifted d-band center once alloyed by Cu. This change can not only promote the desorption of H from Ni surface to improve the catalytic activity but also thermodynamically favor the transformation of adsorption orientation of FA (from a flat orientation on Ni to a tilted one on Ni-Cu alloy) to enable the selective conversion of FA into FOL or TFOL on demand. NiCu0.33/C catalyst exhibits enhanced activity and selectivity for FA hydrogenation compared to pure Ni and Cu.

AIM: The aim of this study was to explore the community diversity and abundance of nitrate‐dependent anaerobic methane oxidizing archaea, Candidatus Methanoperedens nitroreducens, in sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants. METHODS AND RESULTS: Seasonal sampling of the sewage sludge was carried out from two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) located in the northern and southern parts of China. Through amplicon sequencing using our newly designed primers, a large number of Candidatus Methanoperedens nitroreducens‐like (M. nitroreducens) archaeal sequences (638 743) were generated. These sequences were assigned into 742 operational protein units (OPUs) at 90% cut‐off level and classified as Group B member of M. nitroreducens archaea in the phylogenetic tree. More than 80% of the OPUs were not shared between these two WWTPs, showing the M. nitroreducens‐like archaeal community in each WWTP was unique. Quantitative PCR assays also confirmed the presence of M. nitroreducens‐like archaea and revealed a higher abundance in autumn and winter than other seasons, indicating that the environmental attributes in these seasons might favour the growth of this archaea. The numerous drawbacks hindering the practical take-off of the lithium–sulfur technology requires significant breakthrough in designing novel sulfur host. Herein, bipyramidal sulfur/graphene oxide composite cathode with sulfur content of 92% is obtained via a room-temperature bottom-up approach with the aid of polyvinylpyrrolidone. Material characterization reveals the uniform coating of each individual sulfur particle by a thin wall of graphene oxide and residual polyvinylpyrrolidone molecules. The robustness and close proximity of the protective graphene oxide shell not only facilitates electron and ion transportation but also restrains the diffusion of polysulfides through interfacial chemical interaction. As a result, the cathode manifests a high initial reversible capacity of 1301 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C, outstanding capacity retention of 86.4% at 1 C after 115 cycles and long cycle life of 250 cycles with 360.6 mAh g−1 remaining capacity at 2 C. The present work provides an affordable and sustainable approach of confining sulfur at high content which is essential for high-energy density lithium–sulfur battery.

Development of a covalent–organic framework (COF)-based Z-scheme heterostructure is a promising strategy for solar energy driven water splitting, but the construction of a COF-based Z-scheme heterostructure with well-defined architecture, large contact area and intimate contact interfaces is scarce. Herein, we fabricated a direct Z-scheme heterostructure COF–metal sulfide hybrid (T-COF@CdS) with shell–core architecture by self-polymerization of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxaldehyde and 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine in situ on CdS. The formed C–S chemical bonding between T-COF and CdS could provide a very tight and stable interface. Owing to the properly staggered band alignment, strong interfacial interaction and large interfacial contact area between T-COF and CdS, a Z-scheme route for charge separation and transfer is realized, resulting in electron accumulation in CdS for H2O reduction. The obtained Z-scheme heterostructure T-COF@CdS-3 exhibits a high apparent quantum efficiency of 37.8% under 365 nm monochromatic light irradiation, and long-term stability arising from shell–core structures in which the T-COF shell protects the catalytic centers of CdS against deactivation, as well as acts as oxidation sites to avoid the photocorrosion of CdS. This work provides a strategy for the construction of a shell–core direct Z-scheme heterostructure photocatalyst for water splitting with high performance., A stable Z-scheme with well-defined architecture by in situ growth of COFs on CdS for photocatalytic water splitting is constructed. The T-COF shell can protect the catalytic center of CdS from deactivation and photocorrosion.

Chemical messengers have been recognized as signaling molecules involved in regulating various physiological and metabolic activities. Nevertheless, they usually show limited regulatory efficiency due to the complexity of biological processes. Especially for tumor cells, antideath pathways and tumor metastasis are readily activated to resist chemical messenger regulation, further impairing antitumor outcomes. Therefore, it is imperative to develop strategies for tumor eradication with chemical messengers. Herein, a nanomessenger was prepared with signaling transduction cascades to amplify the regulatory activity of chemical messengers and mediate antitumor immunotherapy. Casup2+/supand Hsub2/subS as two chemical messengers were released from nanomessengers to synergistically elevate intracellular Casup2+/supstress and mediate subsequent cell death. Meanwhile, zinc protoporphyrin (ZnPP) as a messenger amplifier suppressed the antideath effect of tumor cells. As a result, tumor cells underwent Casup2+/sup-dependent cell deathivia/isignaling transduction cascades to release tumor-associated antigens, which further served as aniin situ/itumor vaccine to activate antitumor immunity.iIn vivo/istudies revealed that both primary tumors and distant metastases were markedly eradicated. Furthermore, immunological memory was fabricated to arrest tumor metastasis and recurrence. This work introduces cascade engineering into chemical messengers and thus offers a strategy for amplifying chemical messenger-mediated cellular regulation, which would promote the future development of chemical messenger-mediated immunotherapy.̀.

Regulation of angiogenesis is a great challenge for effective anticancer therapy. Generally, anti-angiogenic therapies are focused on inhibition of inducers involved in pro-angiogenic communication pathways. Despite the great potential of anti-angiogenic therapy, engineering efficient angiogenesis inhibition agents (AIAs) is still a formidable challenge, since most anti-angiogenic therapies are limited due to the cancer recurrence via compensatory expression of different angiogenic mediators. Herein, we present a new strategy of near-infrared-II (NIR-II) responsive hydrogel AIAs, constructed by incorporation of nitric oxide (NO) precursor (BNN6) and 2D WO2.9 nanosheets within hydrogel (WB@hydrogel). Because of the defect/2D engineering, the bandgap of the WO2.9 nanosheets narrows, which extends the absorption to the NIR-II region. It offers a favorable NIR-II controlled manner for NO generation through irradiation time and light intensity. The continuous supply of NO can activate the expression of wild-type p53 protein and further reverse the transcriptional expression of pro- and anti-angiogenic factors of the tumor microenvironment (TME), subsequently alternating pro-angiogenic TME to anti-angiogenic TME. In the murine tumor model, this method achieved high tumor growth inhibition (TGI) rate and excellent anti-recurrence efficiency.
