Reliable precipitation data are highly necessary for geoscience research in the Third Pole (TP) region but still lacking, due to the complex terrain and high spatial variability of precipitation here. Accordingly, this study produces a long-term (1979–2020) high-resolution (1/30∘, daily) precipitation dataset (TPHiPr) for the TP by merging the atmospheric simulation-based ERA5_CNN with gauge observations from more than 9000 rain gauges, using the climatologically aided interpolation and random forest methods. Validation shows that TPHiPr is generally unbiased and has a root mean square error of 5.0 mm d−1, a correlation of 0.76 and a critical success index of 0.61 with respect to 197 independent rain gauges in the TP, demonstrating that this dataset is remarkably better than the widely used datasets, including the latest generation of reanalysis (ERA5-Land), the state-of-the-art satellite-based dataset (IMERG) and the multi-source merging datasets (MSWEP v2 and AERA5-Asia). Moreover, TPHiPr can better detect precipitation extremes compared with these widely used datasets. Overall, this study provides a new precipitation dataset with high accuracy for the TP, which may have broad applications in meteorological, hydrological and ecological studies. Particle size distribution (PSD) characteristics of mature squall lines are investigated through global precipitation measurement (GPM) dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) measurements. These squall lines consist of a leading convective (LC) line, a weak-echo transition (WT) region and a trailing stratiform (TS) region. Their PSD characteristics are quite different from the existing conceptual models of mature squall line, given that many small raindrops/ice particles are found in the WT region while in the TS region raindrops/ice particles are sparse. Analysis shows that it is likely due to the short distance from LC to WT, where more particles may be dispersed from LC region and fall into WT region but barely have time to grow in size. In the TS region further behind LC, the particles have more time to get larger. Analysis also reveals that the mesoscale updraft generally occurs at mid-to-high levels in the TS region so that aggregations and collisions-coalescences could be promoted to increase the particle size but decrease the particle number. Through the GPM PSD data analysis, a refined conceptual model of a mesoscale convective system (MCS) with squall line is presented in this study.

Moreover, the TPHiPr can better detect precipitation extremes compared with the three widely-used datasets. Overall, this study provides a new precipitation dataset with high accuracy for the TP, which may have broad applications in meteorological, hydrological and ecological studies. The ground-based radar quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) faces various challenges including the overestimation caused by the bright band (BB) in the stratiform region and the underestimation in mountainous areas when the terrain-enhanced precipitation occurs at the levels below ground-based radar measurements. The vertical precipitation structure provided by spaceborne radars, i.e., the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation radar (PR) and the Global Precipitation Measurement mission (GPM) Dual-frequency PR (DPR), is valuable for mitigating the above problems. Since the spaceborne radars and ground-based radars usually operate in different frequencies, e.g., the TRMM PR and the KuPR of GPM DPR work in Ku-band (13.8 and 13.6 GHz, respectively) and the ground-based radars in western China work in C-band (5.4 GHz), the reflectivity conversion from Ku-band to C-band is necessary before the vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR) measured by spaceborne radars can be utilized to improve the ground-based radar QPE in western China. This study presents a conversion method using GPM DPR measurements, i.e., the drop size distribution (DSD) for different precipitation types (the stratiform with/without BB and the convective cases) and particle phases (the solid, melting, and liquid). Using the ${T}$ -matrix method, the reflectivity difference between Ku-band and C-band is found and the Ku-band to C-band conversion relations are derived with the linear regression. These conversion relations have been validated by matching and comparing the converted C-band reflectivity with the C-band ground-based radar measurements. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of the conversion. This method can be extended for the reflectivity conversion in other frequencies and can facilitate the incorporation of reflectivity measurements from various instruments.

Hydrological hazards usually occur after heavy precipitation, especially during strong convection. Therefore, accurately identifying convective precipitation is very helpful for hydrological warning and forecasting. However, separating the convective, bright band (BB), and stratiform precipitation is found to be challenging when the convection is adjacent to or within the BB region. A new convection/BB/stratiform precipitation segregation algorithm is proposed in this study to resolve this challenging issue. This algorithm is applicable for a single radar volume scan data in native (polar) coordinates and consists of four processes: 1) check the freezing (0°C) level to roughly assess whether convection is occurring or not; 2) identify the convective cores through analyzing composite reflectivity (maximum reflectivity for a given range gate among all the sweeps), vertically integrated liquid water (VIL), VIL horizontal gradient, and reflectivity at the levels of 0°, −10°, and above −10°C; 3) delineate the whole convective region through the seeded region growing method by taking account of the microphysical differences between the BB and convective regions; and 4) delineate BB features in the stratiform region. The proposed algorithm utilizes the physical characteristics of different precipitation types for precisely segregating the convective, BB, and stratiform precipitation. This algorithm has been tested with radar data of different precipitation events and evaluated with three months of rain gauge data. The results show that the proposed algorithm performs consistently well for challenging precipitation events with the convection adjacent to or within a strong BB. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm could be used to improve the vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR) correction and reduce the overestimation of rainfall in the BB precipitation region.

Microtopography on a building roof will direct rainfall from roofs to the ground through downspouts and transform the rainfall spatial distribution from plane to points. However, the issues on whether and how the building-induced rainfall redistribution (BIRR) influences hydrologic responses are still not well understood despite the numerous downspouts in the urban area. Hence, this study brings the roof layer into a grid-based urban hydrologic model (gUHM) to quantitatively evaluate the impacts of BIRR, aiming to enhance the understanding of building effects in urban hydrology and subsequently to identify the necessity of incorporating BIRR into flood forecasting. Nine land development strategies and 27 rainfall conditions are considered herein to characterize the changing circumstance. Results indicate that the impacts of BIRR depend on multiple circumstance factors and are nonnegligible in urban hydrology. The BIRR causes not only bidirectional impacts on the hydrologic characteristic values (e.g., peak flow and runoff volume) but also an obvious alteration of the hydrograph. Overall, the BIRR tends to increase the peak flow, and more importantly, the impact will be aggravated by the increase of rainfall intensity with the maximum relative error of peak flow approaching 10%. This study contributes to a better understanding of building effects on urban hydrology and a step forward to reduce the uncertainty in urban flood warnings.

The accessibility of high-resolution surface data enables fine distributed modeling for urban flooding. However, the surface routing processes between nonhomogeneous land cover components remain in most grid units, due to the high spatial heterogeneity of urban surfaces. Limited by the great difficulty in the acquisition, subgrid routing information (SRI) is always ignored in high-resolution urban flood modeling, and more importantly, the potential impacts of missing SRI on flood forecasting are still less understood. In this study, 54 urban-oriented scenarios of subgrid routing schemes are designed at an isolated grid, including three types of land parcels, two routing directions, and nine routing percents. The impacts of missing SRI are evaluated comprehensively under 60 different rainfall scenarios, in terms of the peak runoff (PR) and the runoff coefficient (RC). Furthermore, the influence mechanism is revealed as well to explain the discrepancy of the impacts under different conditions. Results show the missing of the routing process from impervious to pervious areas leads to significant impacts on the simulation of both PR and RC. Overestimated RC is detected, however, the impacts on PR are bidirectional depending on the rainfall intensity. Overestimation of PR due to missing SRI is observed in light rainfall events, but the opposite effect is identified under heavy rainfall conditions. This study highlights the importance of incorporating the SRI for urban flood forecasting to avoid underestimating the hazard risk in heavy rainfall. Simultaneously, it identifies that blindly utilizing infiltration-based green infrastructure is not feasible in urban stormwater management, due to the possible increase in peak runoff.

Data used for model

Changes in Earth’s albedo due to vegetation dynamics, snow cover, and land cover change have attracted much attention. However, the effects of vegetation dynamics on albedo have not been comprehensively documented according to its spatial (regional), temporal (within growing season), and spectral (visible, near-infrared, and shortwave) characteristics. This study examined the effects of vegetation greenness on albedo from 2000 to 2014 in China’s grasslands, which have considerable intra- and inter-annual variations, using remote sensing-based albedo and two-band Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI2) data. Generally, we found an insignificant negative correlation between the shortwave (SW) albedo and EVI2 for grasslands in China. However, the visible (VIS) albedo was more sensitive to changes in vegetation greenness than near-infrared (NIR) albedo in China’s grasslands. The relationship between the NIR albedo and EVI2 was more complicated, especially in the Tibetan Plateau (TP), where the correlation was negative in the early growing season and positive in the late growing season; while the correlation between the NIR albedo and EVI2 was always negative in main part of Inner Mongolia (IM). The different albedo-EVI2 relationships in IM and TP may be related to differences in soil albedos. The higher sensitivity of the SW albedo to vegetation greenness change in IM, the stronger effect on land surface radiation budget. Our finding about vegetation-induced changes in albedo differ in space, time and spectral bands is expected to contribute to the improvement of land surface models.

After decades of research and development, the WSR-88D (NEXRAD) network in the United States was upgraded with dual-polarization capability, providing polarimetric radar data (PRD) that have the potential to improve weather observations, quantification, forecasting, and warnings. The weather radar networks in China and other countries are also being upgraded with dual-polarization capability. Now, with radar polarimetry technology having matured, and PRD available both nationally and globally, it is important to understand the current status and future challenges and opportunities. The potential impact of PRD has been limited by their oftentimes subjective and empirical use. More importantly, the community has not begun to regularly derive from PRD the state parameters, such as water mixing ratios and number concentrations, used in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. In this review, we summarize the current status of weather radar polarimetry, discuss the issues and limitations of PRD usage, and explore potential approaches to more efficiently use PRD for quantitative precipitation estimation and forecasting based on statistical retrieval with physical constraints where prior information is used and observation error is included. This approach aligns the observation-based retrievals favored by the radar meteorology community with the model-based analysis of the NWP community. We also examine the challenges and opportunities of polarimetric phased array radar research and development for future weather observation.

Soil erosion is one of the major threats to the environment and agriculture in the world and rainfall erosivity is the most active factor to lead changes in soil erosion. Here, we use statistically downscaled, bias-corrected Community Earth System Model (CESM) low-warming simulations to investigate the future changes in rainfall erosivity in mainland China under the Paris Agreement global warming targets. The downscaled simulations evidently outperform the original CESM simulations in capturing the spatial distribution, magnitudes and annual cycle of rainfall erosivity in China in the present day (1986–2005). The rainfall erosivity will be significantly increased in most regions of China under the 1.5 °C and 2 °C warming targets and the regional mean increases are approximately 33% and 40%, respectively. In addition, the corresponding increases are even larger than 60% and 75%, respectively, in a quarter of mainland China. The increase in rainfall erosivity is resulted from the joint contributions of increases in frequency and intensity of erosive rainfall. However, it is dominated by the increase in the frequency. Compared with annual rainfall amount, the future warming will bring a four times greater impact on the soil erosion potentially caused by rainfall. Limiting global warming to 1.5 °C instead of 2 °C would reduce 17% of the increase in rainfall erosivity in China. For grain producing areas like Sichuan Basin, the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River and South China, the values are approximately 20%. The future warming will significantly increase the potential risk of soil loss in China, and it is beneficial to relief this risk if the global warming is limited to 1.5 °C rather than 2 °C.

Land surface albedo, as an essential biophysical factor, plays an essential role in surface energy balance. Identifying environmental drivers of albedo in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) helps to understand the role of the “third pole” in responding to environmental change and regulating regional climate. Based on remotely sensed data of albedo, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), snow cover, and soil moisture, this study investigated the effects of land cover (i.e., vegetation, snow) and soil on albedo from the perspectives of spatial, temporal, and spectral (visible, near-infrared, and shortwave) changes of albedo. Generally, changes in shortwave (SW) albedo were primarily driven by changes in snow cover during the growing season (from May to September), predominantly in May and June. The NDVI had larger contributions to visible (VIS) albedo change and was identified as the foremost important driver for VIS albedo in July and August. The correlations between the near-infrared (NIR) albedo and NDVI were positive in the mid- and late growing season in eastern TP. Soil moisture was negatively correlated with albedo throughout the growing season and was identified as the foremost important driver in August. The NIR albedo was more susceptible than the VIS albedo to changes in soil moisture. The correlations between NDVI and albedo varied across different categories of aridity caused by changing correlations between NIR albedo and NDVI along the aridity gradients, and consequently the VIS and NIR albedo counterbalance can further limit the contributions of vegetation greenness on SW albedo in sub-humid and humid region. Our findings are expected to improve understandings of energy budget simulations over TP region in land surface models.

The U.S. Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) network has provided meteorologists and hydrologists with quantitative precipitation observations at an unprecedented high spatial–temporal resolution since its deployment in the mid-1990s. Since each single radar can only cover a maximum range of 460 km, a mosaic of multiple-radar observations is needed to generate any national-scale products. The Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system utilizes a physically based two-dimensional mosaicking algorithm of the WSR-88D data to generate seamless national quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) products. For areas covered by multiple radars, the mosaicking scheme first determines if precipitation is present by checking the lowest-altitude observation. If the lowest observed radar data indicate no precipitation, then the mosaicked value is set to no precipitation. Otherwise, a weighted mean of multiple-radar observations is taken as the mosaicked value. The weighting function is based on multiple factors, including the distance from the radar and the height of the observation with respect to the melting layer. The mosaic algorithm uses the physically lowest radar observations with no/little blockage while maintaining a spatial continuity in the mosaicked field. The performance of the MRMS seamless radar mosaic algorithm was examined for various precipitation events of different characteristics. The results of these case evaluations are presented in this paper.

Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) radar only (Q3RAD), Q3RAD local gauge corrected (Q3gc), dual polarization (Dual Pol), legacy Precipitation Processing System (PPS), and National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) stage IV product performance were evaluated for data collected east of the Rockies during the 2014 warm season. For over 22 000 radar QPE–gauge data pairs, Q3RAD had a higher correlation coefficient (0.85) and a lower mean absolute error (9.4 mm) than the Dual Pol (0.83 and 10.5 mm, respectively) and PPS (0.79 and 10.8 mm, respectively). Q3RAD performed best when the radar beam sampled precipitation within or above the melting layer because of its use of a reflectivity mosaic corrected for brightband contamination. Both NCEP stage IV and Q3gc showed improvement over the radar-only QPEs; while stage IV exhibited the lower errors, the performance of Q3gc was remarkable considering the estimates were automatically generated in near–real time. Regional analysis indicated Q3RAD outperformed Dual Pol and PPS over the southern plains, Southeast/mid-Atlantic, and Northeast. Over the northern United States, Q3RAD had a higher wet bias below the melting layer than both Dual Pol and PPS; within and above the melting layer, Q3RAD exhibited the lowest errors. The Q3RAD wet bias was likely due to MRMS’s overestimation of tropical rain areas in continental regions and applying a high yield reflectivity–rain-rate relationship. An adjustment based on precipitation climatology reduced the wet bias errors by ~22% and will be implemented in the operational MRMS in the fall of 2016.

Automated rain gauge networks provide direct measurements of precipitation and have been used for numerous applications, such as generating regional and national precipitation maps, calibrating remote sensing quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE), and validating hydrological and meteorological model predictions. However, automated gauge observations are prone to be affected by a variety of error sources and require a careful quality-control (QC) procedure. Many previous gauge QC techniques were based on spatiotemporal checks within the gauge network itself, and their effectiveness can be dependent on gauge densities and precipitation regimes. The current study takes advantage of the multisensor data sources in the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system and develops an automated and computationally efficient gauge QC scheme based on the consistency of hourly gauge and radar QPE observations. Radar and gauge error characteristics related to radar sampling geometry, precipitation regimes, and freezing-level height is utilized within this scheme. This QC scheme is evaluated by testing its capability to identify suspect gauges and comparing the ability to quality-controlled gauges through statistical and spatial comparisons of gauge-influenced gridded QPE products. Spatial analysis of the gridded QPE products in MRMS resulted in a more physical spatial QPE distribution using quality-controlled gauges versus the same product created with non-quality-controlled gauge data.

Rapid advancements of computer technologies in recent years made the real-time transferring and integration of high-volume, multisource data at a centralized location a possibility. The Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system recently implemented at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction demonstrates such capabilities by integrating about 180 operational weather radars from the conterminous United States and Canada into a seamless national 3D radar mosaic with very high spatial (1 km) and temporal (2 min) resolution. The radar data can be integrated with high-resolution numerical weather prediction model data, satellite data, and lightning and rain gauge observations to generate a suite of severe weather and quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) products. This paper provides an overview of the initial operating capabilities of MRMS QPE products.

This study proposes a new estimation method for vertically integrated liquid water content (VIL) using radar reflectivity volume data and temperature sounding retrieved from the numerical weather model analysis. This method addresses uncertainty factors in conventional VIL estimation associated with the effects from the bright band (BB) and radar beam geometry near the radar site. The new VIL is then used for precipitation classification (convective/stratiform) and wind turbine clutter detection in the hope that the estimated VIL indicating vertical activities or development of precipitation systems will account for the two independent subjects together, in opposite ways. The non-precipitation radar echoes returned from wind turbines do not likely generate significant degree of VIL, compared to the one estimated from actual convective cells, which contain comparable reflectivity strength. We tested the proposed VIL estimation, precipitation classification, and wind turbine clutter detection methods using various Iowa cases and illustrated their successful application. We also performed a quantitative evaluation of precipitation classification using ground reference data from a dense rain gauge network over the Turkey River basin in Iowa. The evaluation results show improved performance for most non-convective event cases estimated by the stratiform estimator (Z = 200R1.6) because we applied the convective estimator (Z = 300R1.4) to all event cases without classification. In addition, we demonstrated the potential of the new classification to mitigate significant BB effects in quantitative precipitation estimation using a correction method based on the vertical profile of reflectivity.

Hurricane Irma, landed Florida on September 9th, 2017, was the most intense Atlantic hurricane striking the United States since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The evolution of Irma was well observed on September 9h–11th by an S-band EEC dual-pol radar deployed in Miami, FL. Precipitation gauge observations are routinely classified as ground truth and are utilized in the verification and calibration of radar-derived quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE). This study quantifies the challenges of utilizing automated hourly gauge networks to measure winter precipitation within the real-time Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system from 1 October 2013 to 1 April 2014. Gauge observations were compared against gridded radar-derived QPE over the entire MRMS domain. Gauges that reported no precipitation were classified as potentially stuck in the MRMS system if collocated hourly QPE values indicated nonzero precipitation. The average number of potentially stuck gauge observations per hour doubled in environments defined by below-freezing surface wet-bulb temperatures, while the average number of observations when both the gauge and QPE reported precipitation decreased by 77%. Periods of significant winter precipitation impacts resulted in over a thousand stuck gauge observations, or over 10%–18% of all gauge observations across the MRMS domain, per hour. Partial winter impacts were observed prior to the gauges becoming stuck. Simultaneous postevent thaw and precipitation resulted in unreliable gauge values, which can introduce inaccurate bias correction factors when calibrating radar-derived QPE. The authors then describe a methodology to quality control (QC) gauge observations compromised by winter precipitation based on these results. A comparison of two gauge instrumentation types within the National Weather Service (NWS) Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) network highlights the need for improved gauge instrumentation for more accurate liquid-equivalent values of winter precipitation.

Spatial rainfall pattern plays a critical role in determining hydrological responses in mountainous areas, especially for natural disasters such as flash floods. In this study, to improve the skills of flood forecasting in the mountainous Three Gorges Region (TGR) of the Yangtze River, we developed a first version of a high-resolution (1 km) radar-based quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) consideration of many critical procedures, such as beam blockage analysis, ground-clutter filter, rain type identification and adaptive Z–R relations. A physically-based distributed hydrological model (GBHM) was established and further applied to evaluate the performance of radar-based QPE for regional flood forecasting, relative to the gauge-driven simulations. With two sets of input data (gauge and radar) collected during summer 2010, the applicability of the current radar-based QPE to rainstorm monitoring and flash flood forecasting in the TGR is quantitatively analysed and discussed.

High-resolution, accurate quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) is critical for monitoring and prediction of flash floods and is one of the most important drivers for hydrological forecasts. Rain gauges provide a direct measure of precipitation at a point, which is generally more accurate than remotely sensed observations from radar and satellite. However, high-quality, accurate precipitation gauges are expensive to maintain, and their distributions are too sparse to capture gradients of convective precipitation that may produce flash floods. Weather radars provide precipitation observations with significantly higher resolutions than rain gauge networks, although the radar reflectivity is an indirect measure of precipitation and radar-derived QPEs are subject to errors in reflectivity–rain rate (Z–R) relationships. Further, radar observations are prone to blockages in complex terrain, which often result in a poor sampling of orographically enhanced precipitation. The current study aims at a synergistic approach to QPE by combining radar, rain gauge, and an orographic precipitation climatology. In the merged QPE, radar data depict high-resolution spatial distributions of the precipitation and rain gauges provide accurate precipitation measurements that correct potential biases in the radar QPE. The climatology provides a high-resolution background of the spatial precipitation distribution in the complex terrain where radar coverage is limited or nonexistent. The merging algorithm was tested on heavy precipitation events in different areas of the United States and provided a superior QPE to the individual components. The new QPE algorithm is fully automated and can be easily implemented in an operational system.

Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) in the West Coast region of the United States has been a big challenge for Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) because of severe blockages caused by the complex terrain. The majority of the heavy precipitation in the West Coast region is associated with strong moisture flux from the Pacific that interacts with the coastal mountains. Such orographic enhancement of precipitation occurs at low levels and cannot be observed well by WSR-88D because of severe blockages. Specifically, the radar beam either samples too high above the ground or misses the orographic enhancement at lower levels, or the beam broadens with range and cannot adequately resolve vertical variations of the reflectivity structure. The current study developed an algorithm that uses S-band Precipitation Profiler (S-PROF) radar observations in northern California to improve WSR-88D QPEs in the area. The profiler data are used to calculate two sets of reference vertical profiles of reflectivity (RVPRs), one for the coastal mountains and another for the Sierra Nevada. The RVPRs are then used to correct the WSR-88D QPEs in the corresponding areas. The S-PROF–based VPR correction methodology (S-PROF-VPR) has taken into account orographic processes and radar beam broadenings with range. It is tested using three heavy rain events and is found to provide significant improvements over the operational radar QPE.

The current study investigates the variability of vertical structure of precipitation in the Huaihe River Basin (HRB) of China. The precipitation characteristics have been revealed by the long-term observations of vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR) from the first spaceborne precipitation radar (PR) onboard the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)'s Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite. This study has statistically analyzed the latest TRMM 2A-23 and 2A-25 products (version 7, released in 2012) with ∼15 years time span (from 11 December 1997 to 19 August 2012). First, the spatial and seasonal variations of storm height and freezing level have been investigated. The results show a climatological relation connecting the storm height with the rainfall rate in HRB. Second, mean VPRs have been studied for the stratiform and convective precipitation. The VPR variability has been analyzed for different seasons and rain intensities. Third, the characteristics of rain intensification and weakening in the vertical direction have been examined by the statistical analysis of VPR slope below the melting layer. The results show that the rainfall tends to be reduced (or intensified) with the height changing downward in the light (or moderate and heavy) precipitating clouds, no matter stratiform or convection. Finally, the S-band climatological VPRs have been characterized by converting the VPR from Ku-band to S-band. Considering the wide application of national radar network for weather surveillance in China, the developed S-band climatological VPRs can be potentially applied in a VPR correction scheme to improve the ground radar-based quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) in this river basin.

Understanding spatiotemporal rainfall patterns in mountainous areas is of great importance for prevention of natural disasters such as flash floods and landslides. There is little knowledge about rainfall variability over historically underobserved complex terrains, however, and especially about the variations of hourly rainfall. In this study, the spatiotemporal variations of hourly rainfall in the Three Gorges region (TGR) of China are investigated with gauge and newly available radar data. The spatial pattern of hourly rainfall has been examined by a number of statistics, and they all show that the rainfall variations are time-scale and location dependent. In general, the northern TGR receives more-intense and longer-duration rainfall than do other parts of the TGR, and short-duration storms could occur in most of the TGR. For temporal variations, the summer diurnal cycle shifts from a morning peak in the west to a late-afternoon peak in the east while a mixed pattern of two peaks exists in the middle. In statistical terms, empirical model–based estimation indicates that the correlation scale of hourly rainfall is about 40 km. Further investigation shows that the correlation distance varies with season, from 30 km in the warm season to 60 km in the cold season. In addition, summer rainstorms extracted from radar rainfall data are characterized by short duration (6–8 h) and highly localized patterns (5–17 and 13–36 km in the minor and major directions, respectively). Overall, this research provides quantitative information about the rainfall regime in the TGR and shows that the combination of gauge and radar data is useful for characterizing the spatiotemporal pattern of storm rainfall over complex terrain.

summary This study evaluated rainfall estimates from ground radar network and four satellite algorithms with a relatively dense rain gauge network over Taiwan Island for the 2009 extreme Typhoon Morakot at various spatiotemporal scales (from 0.04 to 0.25 and hourly to event total accumulation). The results show that all the remote-sensing products underestimate the rainfall as compared to the rain gauge measurements, in an order of radar (� 18%), 3B42RT (� 19%), PERSIANN-CCS (28%), 3B42V6 (� 36%), and CMORPH (� 61%). The ground radar estimates are also most correlated with gauge measurements, having a correlation coefficient (CC) of 0.81 (0.82) at 0.04 (0.25) spatial resolution. For satellite products, CMORPH has the best spatial correlation (0.70) but largely underestimates the total rainfall accumulation. Compared to microwave ingested algorithms, the IR-dominant algorithms provide a better estimation of the total rainfall accumulation but poorly resolve the temporal evolution of the warm cloud typhoon, especially for a large overestimation at the early storm stage. This study suggests that the best performance comes from the ground radar estimates that could be used as an alternative in case of the gauge denial. However, the current satellite rainfall products still have limitations in terms of resolution and accuracy, especially for this type of extreme typhoon.

In this paper, the authors estimate the uncertainty of the rainfall products from NASA and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR) so that they may be used in a quantitative manner for applications like hydrologic modeling or merging with other rainfall products. The spatial error structure of TRMM PR surface rain rates and types was systematically studied by comparing them with NOAA/National Severe Storms Laboratory's (NSSL) next generation, high-resolution (1 km/5 min) National Mosaic and Multi-Sensor Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE; NMQ/Q2) over the TRMM-covered continental United States (CONUS). Data pairs are first matched at the PR footprint scale (5 km/instantaneous) and then grouped into 0.25° grid cells to yield spatially distributed error maps and statistics using data from December 2009 through November 2010. Careful quality control steps (including bias correction with rain gauges and quality filtering) are applied to the ground radar measurements prior to considering them as reference data. The results show that PR captures well the spatial pattern of total rainfall amounts with a high correlation coefficient (CC; 0.91) with Q2, but this decreases to 0.56 for instantaneous rain rates. In terms of precipitation types, Q2 and PR convective echoes are spatially correlated with a CC of 0.63. Despite this correlation, PR's total annual precipitation from convection is 48.82% less than that by Q2, which points to potential issues in the PR algorithm's attenuation correction, nonuniform beam filling, and/or reflectivity-to-rainfall relation. Finally, the spatial analysis identifies regime-dependent errors, in particular in the mountainous west. It is likely that the surface reference technique is triggered over complex terrain, resulting in high-amplitude biases.

The melting of aggregated snow/crystals often results in an enhancement of the reflectivity observed by weather radars, and this is commonly referenced as the bright band (BB). The locally high reflectivity often causes overestimation in radar quantitative precipitation estimates (QPE) if no appropriate correction is applied. When the melting layer is high, a complete BB layer profile (including top, peak, and bottom) can be observed by the ground radar, and a vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR) correction can be made to reduce the BB impact. When a melting layer is near the ground and the bottom part of the bright band cannot be observed by the ground radar, a VPR correction cannot be made directly from the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) radar observations. This paper presents a new VPR correction method under this situation. From high-resolution precipitation profiler data, an empirical relationship between BB peak and BB bottom is developed. The empirical relationship is combined with the apparent BB peak observed by volume scan radars and the BB bottom is found. Radar QPEs are then corrected based on the estimated BB bottom. The new method was tested on 13 radars during seven low brightband events over different areas in the United States. It is shown to be effective in reducing the radar QPE overestimation under low brightband situations.

Mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) contain both regions of convective and stratiform precipitation, and a bright band (BB) is often found in the stratiform region. Inflated reflectivity intensities in the BB often cause positive biases in radar quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE). A vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR) correction is necessary to reduce such biases. However, existing VPR correction methods for ground-based radars often perform poorly for MCSs owing to their coarse resolution and poor coverage in the vertical direction, especially at far ranges. Spaceborne radars such as the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR), on the other hand, can provide high resolution VPRs. The current study explores a new approach of incorporating the TRMM VPRs into the VPR correction for the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) radar QPE. High-resolution VPRs derived from the Ku-band TRMM PR data are converted into equivalent S-band VPRs using an empirical technique. The equivalent S-band TRMM VPRs are resampled according to the WSR-88D beam resolution, and the resampled (apparent) VPRs are then used to correct for BB effects in the WSR-88D QPE when the ground radar VPR cannot accurately capture the BB bottom. The new scheme was tested on six MCSs from different regions in the United States and it was shown to provide effective mitigation of the radar QPE errors due to BB contamination.
