3. Where Do Women of Color Complete Physics Degrees?

Abstract

Between 2006 and 2016, women made up 19% of the U.S. citizens and permanent residents who received bachelor's degrees in physics. Women of Color (which includes women who indicated Black, Latina, American Indian, Alaska Native, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Native Hawaiian, or mixed as their ethnicity or race) received 4% of all physics degrees; African American, Latina, and Native American (ALANA) women received 2%. ALANA women are more underrepresented in physics than in any of the other major STEM disciplines, including computer science and engineering.

4. Parenting and Physics: How to Support Physics Students Who Are Raising Children

Abstract

This study addresses the obstacles and lack of support available for physics students who are also parents. The purpose of this study is to provide physics parents with strategies that other students like them have used and provide ideas for universities and physics faculty to support physics students who are raising children. Majoring in physics could present a challenge to any parents, given the demands of the major. Further, given the low numbers of women in physics and previous research on student parents, it is likely that majoring in physics might be an extra burden for women who are parenting. Given the need for people trained as physicists and engineers, finding ways to support parents in physics could have benefits all around: It could increase the pool of highly trained STEM workers, while diversifying physics and also helping parents prepare for careers that can support their families.

9. Teaching Science to Newcomers: ESOL Students Learn Science by Working with an Advanced Physics Class

Abstract

The curriculum for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students in high school is primarily devoted to improving English language skills such as vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, and speaking. Although knowledge and comprehension of these skills are critical for success not only throughout school but also for life choices and careers in general, such a curriculum based primarily on these skills tend to exclude other equally important subjects. For instance, the lack of science in ESOL curriculum is of great concern. To encourage students to enroll in less-intensive, lower-level science courses, Richardson High School is committed to developing and implementing novel lessons and projects that will substantially improve educational opportunities, instruction, and learning for ESOL 1 students. Here, the authors describe one such project in which the ESOL teachers teamed up with the Advanced Physics teacher to develop a lesson plan to expose ESOL students to science and scientific inquiry. The project is presented in three stages. In the first stage, ESOL students were invited to the physics classroom for an introduction to scientific inquiry. Before the second stage began, physics students were arranged in groups of three and each group was assigned an experiment. When the second stage of the project took place, ESOL students joined assigned groups of physics students in the physics classroom. Once the groups were in place, the experiments began and continued throughout the class period. As the experiments were in progress, each ESOL student was actively engaged in the activity, observing, recording, and documenting all of the major steps and important information from their experiment. In the third and final stage, the groups of ESOL students were invited to the physics classroom to present the findings from their experiment to the combined classes. The teachers encouraged discussion by asking questions to gauge learning and to assess understanding. The general reactions of both the ESOL 1 and Advanced Physics students are evidence that this project was a tremendous success, with both groups of students gaining a unique educational experience. Not only did ESOL students learn about science, they also had the opportunity to socialize with other students on their campus and practice speaking in English by explaining their experiment to the combined classes. Abstract

Aluminum is one of many metals that can be toxic to body function. The levels of aluminum in the body are controlled by natural barriers such as the skin, respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts, and by excretion of aluminum through the kidneys. Patients with kidney failure who ingest aluminum may develop aluminum toxicity, as indicated by dementia and anemia. Aluminum-containing antacids (ACA) are commonly used to treat gastrointestinal disorders in infants and children. Premature infants especially have a limited ability to excrete aluminum. The ability of infants with normally functioning kidneys to regulate body aluminum levels when given ACA was evaluated. Ten patients were given ACA for about five weeks and 16 healthy subjects who were not treated with ACA were studied. The infants were aged 2 to 24 months. The average blood aluminum level in the children receiving ACA was 37 micrograms per liter (ug/L), nine times that of the healthy group, which was 4 ug/L. However, no signs of toxicity were observed in the treated infants. The medical consequences of prolonged treatment with ACA in infants with intact kidneys is unclear. This area still needs further study, including determining aluminum levels in tissues. The use of ACA in infants should be carefully considered, with attention paid to dosage; alternative forms of acid control should be considered when possible. 46. THE EFFECT OF UNSATURATION OF DIETARY FAT AND OF ANTIOXIDANTS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF LIVER DAMAGE

Abstract

The addition of unsaturated fatty acids, even in small amounts, to diets low in vitamin E, selenium, and the sulphur-containing amino acids greatly accelerated the development of acute liver necrosis in rats. The production of this lesion was shown also to be affected in a similar manner by the nature of the dietary fat in the ration consumed immediately prior to the removal of protective substances such as the sulphur-containing amino acids; unsaturated fatty acids or lipid again acted as predisposing factors.Gamma-tocopherol incorporated in the diet at a level of 0.02% and injected at a level of 1.5 mg/rat/day was equally as effective as alpha-tocopherol in preventing liver necrosis. The protective effect of gamma-tocopherol against the development of liver necrosis lends support to the thesis that alpha-tocopherol protects against liver damage by virtue of its antioxidant activity.
