Research on Ca-Mg carbonate crystallization and phase transition regulated by microbial cells and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) is significant for carbon sequestration, remediation of polluted soil and water, and synthesis of functional biomaterials. This study focused on the mineralogical transformation from amorphism to crystal, and interaction among cells, EPS, and minerals. By tracing the law of mineral growth and morphological evolution, the influences of cells and EPS on mineral formation were investigated. The results revealed that calcification and the template of rod-shaped cells of strain HJ-1 were the basis for the formation of dumbbell-shaped particles, and directional aggregation and differential growth were the keys to the development and stability of dumbbells. Cell participation had a noticeable impact on mineral prototypes, instead of determining the polymorphism. EPS contributed to aragonite formation and stability. The acidic amino acids or proteins in EPS were likely to cause an increase in MgCO3 content in Mg-calcite. EPS promoted aggregation of particles and induced spherical formation. Exopolysaccharides and proteins were the main components of EPS that can affect carbonate mineralization. EPS could influence the morphology and polymorphism by providing nucleation sites, interacting with Mg2+, adsorbing or incorporating mineral lattices, and inducing particle aggregation.

Cyanobacteria harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) are a global concern. Application of allelochemicals is a promising solution for cyanobacteria control, due to its high efficiency, low cost and ecological safety. Flavonoids (natural polyphenols produced by aquatic plants) are reported capable of effectively inhibiting the growth of algae; however, the molecular mechanism of algae chlorophyll inactivation is still unclear. Urban ozone (O3) pollution in the atmosphere has become increasingly prominent on a national scale in mainland China, although the atmospheric particulate matter pollution has been significantly reduced in recent years. The clustering and dynamic variation characteristics of the O3 concentrations in cities across the country, however, have not been accurately explored at relevant spatiotemporal scales. In this study, a standard deviational ellipse analysis and multiscale geographically weighted regression models were applied to explore the migration process and influencing factors of O3 pollution based on measured data from urban monitoring sites in mainland China. The results suggested that the urban O3 concentration in mainland China reached its peak in 2018, and the annual O3 concentration reached 157 ± 27 μg/m3 from 2015 to 2020. On the scale of the whole Chinese mainland, the distribution of O3 exhibited spatial dependence and aggregation. On the regional scale, the areas of high O3 concentrations were mainly concentrated in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, Henan, and other regions. In addition, the standard deviation ellipse of the urban O3 concentration covered the entire eastern part of mainland China. Overall, the geographic center of ozone pollution has a tendency to move to the south with the time variation. The interaction between sunshine hours and other factors (precipitation, NO2, DEM, SO2, PM2.5) significantly affected the variation of urban O3 concentration. In Southwest China, Northwest China, and Central China, the suppression effect of vegetation on local O3 was more obvious than that in other regions. Therefore, this study clarified for the first time the migration path of the gravity center of the urban O3 pollution and identified the key areas for the prevention and control of O3 pollution in mainland China.

Phytate-modified nano-ferrous sulfide (IP6-nano-FeS) was successfully prepared to overcome the low efficiency of heavy metal removal by nano-ferrous sulfide (nano-FeS) due to the agglomeration and easy oxidization of this reducing agent. The results showed that IP6-nano-FeS improved the dispersion of nano-FeS particles, and the maximum Cr(VI) removal reached 436.94 ± 25.40 mg/g. A more novel contribution of this study is that Cr(VI) removal by IP6-nano-FeS was enhanced in the presence of Mg2+, Ca2+, and O2. The removal efficiency increased by ∼10% and ∼8.5% in the presence of conventional cations (Mg2+ and Ca2+: 2–10 g/L) and O2, respectively. The application potential of IP6-nano-FeS for the rapid removal of Cr(VI)-contamination in the presence of aerobic and coexisting cations was confirmed in this study.

Ferrous sulfide (FeS) nanoparticles constitute an effective hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) treatment reagent. However, FeS nanoparticles aggregate easily, significantly limiting their engineering applicability. To overcome this shortcoming and further improve Cr(VI) removal efficiency, this study used tannic acid (TA) to modify FeS nanoparticles. The results demonstrated that TA-modified FeS nanoparticles, TA-nano-FeS, had a significantly reduced tendency to agglomerate, and maintained particle diameters of 10–100 nm, which were much shorter than diameters of FeS nanoparticles. In addition, TA-nano-FeS could combine the surface-active functional groups of TA. The maximum removal capacity of TA-nano-FeS was 381.04 mg/g, which was 2.92 and 1.83 times higher than those of TA and nano-FeS, respectively. Furthermore, the acidic condition was more beneficial for Cr(VI) removal, and the coexisting cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) slightly decreased the removal efficiency of Cr(VI). Adsorption, reduction, and co-precipitation were the removal mechanisms, and the reaction products included FeCr2O4, Cr2O3, Fe2O3, Cr(OH)3, and S8. The results provided valuable information for the practical application of TA-nano-FeS in Cr(VI) removal.

Near-ground ozone in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region has become one of the main air pollutants that threaten the health of residents. However, to date, the transport behavior and source areas of ozone in the YRD region have not been systematically analyzed. In this study, by combining the ozone observational record with a HYSPLIT (hybrid single-particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory) model, we tried to reveal the spatiotemporal regularity of the airflow transport trajectory of ozone. Spatially, high ozone concentrations mainly clustered in industrial cities and resource-based cities. Temporally, the center of the ozone pollution shifted westward of Nanjing from 2015 to 2021. With the passage of time, the influence of meteorological elements on the ozone concentration in the YRD region gradually weakened. Marine atmosphere had the most significant impact on the transmission path of ozone in Shanghai, of which the trajectory frequency in 2021 accounted for 64.21% of the total frequency. The transmission trajectory of ozone in summer was different from that in other seasons, and its transmission trajectory was mainly composed of four medium-distance transmission paths: North China-Bohai Sea, East China Sea-West Pacific Ocean, Philippine Sea, and South China Sea-South China. The contribution source areas mainly shifted to the southeast, and the emission of pollutants from the Shandong Peninsula, the Korean Peninsula-Japan, and the Philippine Sea-Taiwan area increased the impact of ozone pollution in the Shanghai area from 2019 to 2021. This study identified the regional transport path of ozone in the YRD region and provided a scientific reference for the joint prevention and control of ozone pollution in this area.

This study provides a new thinking for the efficient utilization of permanganate (Mn (VII)) in eutrophic water treatment. Eutrophic water contained a large amount of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) with reduction and chelation; this study used phenol as typical organic matter and cyanobacteria EPS as a representative EPS to explore the mechanism by which EPS influences the oxidation of phenol by Mn(VII) at pH 5.0-9.0. The results showed that under the condition of pH 5.0-7.0, adding 0.2-10 mg/L EPS to the Mn(VII) system could effectively improve the oxidation efficiency of Mn(VII) for phenol. The colloid of ferrous sulfide modified by humic acid (HA-n-FeS) shows good reduction and immobilization efficiency for variable-valence heavy metals in wastewater. The removal efficiency of HA-n-FeS for halogenated organic pollutants, however, remains unclear, especially in the absence and presence of oxygen. This study addressed this issue by exploring the effect and mechanism of dissolved oxygen on the degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) by the HA-n-FeS colloid in water. The results showed that the removal efficiency of different concentrations of TBBPA (5,10, and 20 μm) by the HA-n-FeS colloid was 33.16%, 20.48%, and 22.37% in the absence of oxygen, respectively. When TBBPA reacted with the HA-n-FeS colloid, the concentration of Fe(II) and S(-II) remained stable. The adsorption of HA-n-FeS was the main mechanism of removing TBBPA in the absence of oxygen. In the presence of oxygen, the removal efficiency of TBBPA by the HA-n-FeS colloid was 82.37%, 56.80%, and 43.78% (for the above-mentioned TBBPA concentrations), respectively. In addition, the removal capacity of TBBPA by HA-n-FeS was 39.63, 52.21, and 89.75 mg/g, respectively. The concentration of Fe(II) and S(-II) decreased rapidly in time. Among them, the HA-n-FeS colloid removed part of the TBBPA through chemical adsorption. The main way of chemical adsorption was pore adsorption and functional group (olefin CC, phenolic hydroxyl group O-H, alcohol group C-O) combination. Besides, the HA-n-FeS colloid degraded part of the TBBPA into BPA through reduction, in which 17.72% of TBBPA was removed by the reduction of HA-n-FeS colloid. Ferrous sulfide (FeS) and humic acid (HA) are typical black substances in black bloom water. Based on the strong reduction ability of FeS and the photosensitivity of HA, the transformation of toxic organic pollutants by the combination of FeS and HA (HA-FeS) is not clear. In order to explore this issue, the stability of HA-FeS was analyzed by measuring the hydrodynamic diameter and zeta potential of HA-FeS, and then the removal mechanism and possible degradation pathway of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) by HA-FeS under continuous illumination were discussed. The results showed that the hydrodynamic diameter of FeS was reduced and the stability of FeS was improved, and it was easily suspended after FeS combined with the HA in the water. The combination of HA and FeS promoted the removal of TBBPA in water, no matter it was in the presence or absence of light. Besides, compared with the absence of light, the removal efficiency of TBBPA was improved by HA-FeS with continuous light. Background: Cancer has become the major killer of deaths among Chinese urban and rural residents, and about 50% of new cases are from liver cancer, gastric cancer, and esophageal cancer. Digestive tract cancer(DTC) has received widespread attention due to its poor treatment effect and high mortality rate, as well as severe physical, psychological, mental, and economic trauma to patients and their families.Methods: The data on DTC cases in Lujiang County in Hefei, China, were downloaded from the Data Center of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Hefei, Anhui Province, China, while the demographic data were sourced from the demographic department in China. Systematic statistical analyses, including the spatial empirical Bayes smoothing, spatial autocorrelation, hotspot statistics, and Kulldorff's retrospective space-time scan, were used to identify the spatial and spatiotemporal clusters of DTC. GM(1,1) and standard deviation ellipses were then applied to predict the future evolution of the spatial pattern of the DTC cases in Lujiang County. Results: DTC in Lujiang County had obvious spatiotemporal clustering. The spatial distribution of DTC cases increases gradually from east to west in the county in a stepwise pattern. The peak of DTC cases occurred in 2012-2013, and the high-case spatial clusters were located mainly in the northwest of Lujiang County. At the 1% significance level, two spatiotemporal clusters were identified. From 2012 to 2017, the cases of DTC in Lujiang County gradually shifted to the high-incidence area in the northwest, and the spatial distribution range experienced a process of “dispersion-clustering”. The cases of DTC in Lujiang County will continue to move to the northwest from 2018 to 2025, and the predicted spatial clustering tends to be more obvious. Conclusions: High-incidence time of DTC was 2012-2013, and the number of cases increased from east to west in Lujiang County. High clusters were mostly located in the northwestern area and agglomerated from southeast to northwestern especially after 2014.

Sulfamerazine (SMR) as a persistent organic pollutant in waste streams is of growing environmental concern. This study explores the extraction SMR from water into an acetic acid (AA) solution using granular activated carbon (GAC), and removal of SMR by ozonation in AA solution. Systematic experiments have shown that GAC can be used as an adsorbent to transfer sulfamerazine from water to AA solution. SMR removal efficiency is 99.5% in 10% AA aqueous solution, which is better than in water. The removal rate of SMR in the AA solution decreased as the initial molar ratio of SMR and O3 increased. The removal rate of SMR decreased with Fe3+ present in the reactive system. The removal of SMR is dominated by indirect ozonation in water, while the SMR removal is an effect of both direct and indirect ozonation in AA solution. It is a very efficient process for the degradation of SMR in micro polluted water when using combined GAC adsorption–desorption in AA solution and ozonation of the resulting solution.

Heavy metal pollution in agricultural soils poses a direct threat to food safety and human health. It has been shown that the colloids is the carrier of heavy metal transport in the polluted soil by heavy metals, but the sources of heavy metals in the soil and colloids and their interrelations are not transparent at present. This study aims to investigate the distribution characteristics of heavy metals in agricultural soils near mining areas, and reveal the relevance of heavy metal content in colloids with total content in soils and their chemical species in soils. Results showed that the concentrations of Mn, Zn, and Pb in agricultural soils and colloids were higher than those of other heavy metals. The content of heavy metals in colloids was positively correlated with the total content of heavy metals in soil. Heavy metals in soil could be easily combined by humus-like substances and tryptophan-like protein in the colloids. The primary source of heavy metals in soil and colloids was mining activities. This study provides theoretical support for revealing the pollution characteristics and migration of heavy metals in agricultural soils and colloids around mining areas.

This study, for the first time, estimates the climate impacts of adopting green roofs and cool roofs on the seasonal urban climate of 16 cities that comprise the Yangtze River Delta metropolitan. We use a suite of regional climate simulation to compare the local climate impacts of the implementation of different roof strategies in summer and winter. The results indicate that in summer, the 2 m surface temperature reduced significantly when these two roof strategies are adopted, with peak reductions of 0.74 and 1.19 K for green roofs and cool roofs, respectively. The cooling impact of cool roofs is more effective than that of green roofs under the scenarios assumed in this study. Besides, rooted in the different mechanisms influencing urban heat flux, significant indirect effects were also observed: adopting cool roofs leads to a decreased precipitation in summer and an apparent reduction in wintertime temperatures in the urban area. Although cool roofs can be an effective way to reduce high temperatures during the summer, green roofs have fewer adverse impacts on other climate conditions. These results underline the need for comprehensive climate change policies that incorporate place-based solutions and extend beyond the nearly exclusive focus on summertime cooling.

Nano ferrous sulfide (n-FeS) colloids show an excellent performance in the application of remediation in situ soil and groundwater. However, due to the interfacial effect and high reactivity of the nano sized FeS, n-FeS easy to agglomerate, which reduces their remediation efficiency. In this study, a novel composite colloid was synthesized using polyacrylic acid salt (PAA) and n-FeS. The PAA-n-FeS colloid was used to remove Cr(VI) in water remediation, and its removal mechanism and efficiency were explored. The results showed that the hydrodynamic diameter of PAA-n-FeS ranged from 65.04-90.09 nm and the zeta potential was from -27 to -54 mV at pH varying from 4.5-9.0. PAA was coated on the surface of n-FeS, which improved the dispersibility and stability of n-FeS by increasing the steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsion between n-FeS particles. Moreover, the Cr(VI) maximum removal amount PAA-n-FeS was 432.79 mg/g, which was significantly higher than that of n-FeS (218.29 mg/g) and PAA (12.32 mg/g). The mechanism of PAA-n-FeS removal of Cr(VI) was mainly derived from its own reducibility. The reaction products were mainly Cr(OH)3, Cr(III)-Fe(III), Cr2O3, and Cr2S3. This research not only finds a new stabilizer for preventing n-FeS agglomeration, but also provides a novel n-FeS composited colloid for promoting the practical application to Cr(VI) removal from water.

Urban trees’ cooling effect would change over time with different extents of warming. We conducted a comparative study of the greater Boston region (BOS) and Baltimore-Washington (BW) metropolitan area, two agglomerations with similar geographic and climatic conditions, as the study area. Cooling rate of urban trees (the changes in land surface temperature (LST) per fraction of tree cover) has been estimated based on the correlation between tree cover and LST on all extreme heat days over five years (2013–2017). We found that (1) the cooling rate of urban trees exhibited a nonlinear correlation with average LST across the two selected metropolitan areas, and the slope of the cooling rate increased rapidly when the average LST increased; (2) the average cooling rate was higher (0.12 °C/%) and more stable in BOS, and lower (0.10 °C/%) while fluctuated in BW; and (3) spatially, for promoting cooling effect, urban trees need to be more dispersed in Boston while more assembled in BW. More importantly, this difference tends to be more pronounced when the background LST increased. We think this different is caused by almost doubled wind speed in Boston than BW, even though they located in the same climate zone. This study further confirmed that not only the total cooling rate of urban trees, but the effects of spatial configuration will also be changed with different extents of outdoor warming in the same city.

The transport behavior of arsenic (As(V)) loaded by ferric humate (HA-Fe) colloid, denoted as HA-Fe/As(V), moving in a saturated quartz sand column, was tested in the laboratory under varying pH values, ionic strengths, and HA and Fe(III) content. The time-fractional advection-dispersion equation (fADE) model was then employed to analyze the observed migration of HA-Fe/As(V). Results showed that the stability of the HA-Fe colloid exhibited an upward trend with an increasing pH and HA content. An increasing HA content led to a decrease in the particle size of the HA-Fe colloid. However, the effect of Fe(III) concentration on colloidal particle size exhibited the opposite phenomenon. The ability of the HA-Fe colloid to load As(V) gradually increased with the increase of the Fe(III) concentration. During the co-transport of the HA-Fe/As(V) colloid, transport of As(V) was promoted with increasing pH, increasing HA and Fe(III) content, and decreasing ionic strength in the saturated porous medium. The transport behavior of As(V) can be well fitted by the fADE model. The model analysis revealed that sub-diffusion of As(V) was weakened in the HA-Fe/As(V) colloid with high HA content. Sub-diffusion of As(V) in the low pH colloid was stronger than that of the high-pH colloid, and the molecular diffusion and mechanical dispersion were more weakened in the high-pH colloid than that of the low-pH colloid. When observing varying ionic strengths, As(V) exhibited stronger sub-diffusion in the HA-Fe/As(V) colloid with a higher ionic strength. As for the Fe(III) content, transport of As(V) was mainly affected by sub-diffusion in the HA-Fe/As(V) colloid with a low Fe(III) content. These findings provided direct and necessary insights into the effects of the HA-Fe colloid on the migration of As(V) throughout saturated porous media under different hydrochemical conditions found in natural environments.

In estuary areas, meteorological conditions have become unstable under the continuous effects of climate change, and the ecological backgrounds of such areas have strongly been influenced by anthropic activities. Consequently, the water quality of these areas is obviously affected. In this research, we identified periods of fluctuation of the general meteorological conditions in the Yangtze River Estuary using a wavelet analysis. Additionally, we performed a spatiotemporal evaluation of the water quality in the fluctuating period by using remote sensing modeling. Then, we explored how the fluctuating meteorological factors affect the distribution of total suspended solids (TSS) and chlorophyll-a (Chla) concentration. (1) The results show that from 2000 to 2015, temperature did not present significant fluctuations, while wind speed (WS) and precipitation (PR) presented the same fluctuation period from January 2012 to December 2012. (2) Based on the measured water sample data associated with Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery, we developed a water quality algorithm and depicted the TSS and Chla concentrations within the WS and PR fluctuating period. (3) We found that the TSS concentration decreased with distance from the shore, while the Chla concentration showed an initially decreasing trend followed by an increasing trend, moreover, these two water quality parameters presented different inter-annual variations. Then, we discussed the correlation between the changes in the TSS and Chla concentrations and the WS and PR variables. The contribution of this research is reflected in two aspects: 1. variations in water quality parameters over a wide range of water bodies can be evaluated based on MODIS data, 2. data from different time periods showed that the fluctuations of meteorological elements had different impacts on water bodies based on the distance from the shore. The results provide new insights for the management of estuary water environments.

In order to explore the level of heavy metal pollution in human hair of residents in Huainan City and provide theoretical guidance for prevention and control of heavy metal pollution, human hair samples from 174 residents in Huainan City were collected so that heavy metal (Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, As, and Fe) concentrations in scalp hair could be tested, and meanwhile their relationship with sex, age, and spatial distribution characteristics could be explored as well. According to the final analysis, the average concentration of Cr, Pb, Cu, Fe, Zn, and As in human hair amounted to 1.56, 6.41, 14.96, 31.13, 166.54, and 1.07 mg/kg. The highest average of Cr and Pb contents in human hair occurred in the area of Xiejiaji District; Fe, Zn, and Hg were in Datong District; and Cu and As were in Panji District respectively. Overall, the lowest risk of heavy metal exposure existed in Tianjia’an District. Heavy metal content in hair varied across sexes and ages. Pb concentration in hair would decrease as age increased. The highest Pb concentration appeared in children between ages 0 and 10, the amount of which was significantly different from that in other age groups; hence, children appear to be more susceptible to Pb pollution than other ages. Contents of Cr, Fe, Zn, and As in hair would also increase with age; Fe content in hair was particularly correlated with age. The contents of Cr, Pb, Fe, and As in men’s hair were higher than those in women’s, whereas the case of Cu and Zn was just the opposite. There were significant differences between sexes concerning the contents of Cr, Cu, and As, and a highly significant difference about Zn between sexes as well. These results indicated that the contents of heavy metal in residents’ hair would be closely related to the features of the local environment and population.

Iohexol (IOH), as a typical iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICMs) with potential threat to human health, is difficult to be removed with the conventional wastewater treatment methods. In this work, new boron nitride coupled Bi2MoO6 layered microspheres (BN/Bi2MoO6) composites were applied to remove IOH from water via photocatalytic degradation. The degradation constant kapp of IOH over 3.5 wt% BN/Bi2MoO6 was 0.016 min−1, which was 3.2 times that of Bi2MoO6 (0.005 min−1). The degradation rate of IOH on 3.5 wt% BN/Bi2MoO6 reached 92% in 150 min. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of BN/Bi2MoO6 can be attributed to the heterojunction between BN and Bi2MoO6. The matched type-I band alignment heterojunction of two semiconductors prominently improved the charge separation. Based on the trapping experiments, holes and superoxide radicals were proved to be the main active species for photocatalytic IOH degradation. Besides, the degradation products of IOH were analyzed by LC–HRMS and the possible degradation mechanism of IOH was also proposed in this work.

The dissolved hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in natural water system poses a significant risk for public health and the environment. Nanoscale ferrous sulfide (FeS) has been widely used to treat soils, sediments, groundwater, and natural waters contaminated with Cr(VI), but the reactivity of FeS can be significantly reduced due to its easy agglomeration and therefore decreased the remove rate of the dissolved Cr(VI). To overcome this problem, the present study used humic acid (HA) to modify FeS in order to reduce its agglomeration and increase stability. Results showed that the HA modified FeS (HA-FeS) had good stability and reduced FeS agglomeration. The hydrodynamic diameter of HA-FeS was between 235 and 241 nm, which was much smaller than that of the unmodified FeS. The maximum removal quantity of Cr(VI) by HA-FeS was 7.74 and 2.35 times higher that of HA and the unmodified FeS, respectively, and the maximum removal quantity of HA-FeS was 675.03 mg/g. Further, HA-FeS performed better efficiency in removing the dissolved Cr(VI) with high or low concentration. With an increasing concentration of Ca2+ and Mg2+, the efficiency of HA-FeS to remove Cr(VI) showed a decreasing trend. The removal mechanism of Cr(VI) mainly relies on the reducibility of Fe2+ and S2−. XPS and XRD measurements further revealed that 95.03% of Cr(VI) was converted to Cr(III) (FeCr2O4, Cr(OH)3 and Cr2O3), and another 4.58% of Cr(VI) was adsorbed by HA-FeS. Therefore, this study demonstrated an efficient method to improve the nano-FeS stability and reactivity for the rapid repair of Cr(VI) contamination in natural water.
