BackgroundCannabis use may be increasing as countries legalize it and it becomes socially acceptable. A history of cannabis use may increase risk of complications after various kinds of surgery and compromise functional recovery. Here we systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed available evidence on how history of cannabis use affects recovery after hip or knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA).MethodsThe PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases were comprehensively searched and studies were selected and analyzed in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. The methodological quality of included studies was assessed based on the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, while quality of evidence was evaluated according to the “Grading of recommendations assessment, development, and evaluation” system. Data on various outcomes were pooled when appropriate and meta-analyzed.ResultsThe systematic review included 16 cohort studies involving 5.91 million patients. Meta-analysis linked history of cannabis use to higher risk of the following outcomes: revision (RR 1.68, 95% CI 1.31–2.16), mechanical loosening (RR 1.77, 95% CI 1.52–2.07), periprosthetic fracture (RR 1.85, 95% CI 1.38–2.48), dislocation (RR 2.10, 95% CI 1.18–3.73), cardiovascular events (RR 2.49, 95% CI 1.22–5.08), cerebrovascular events (RR 3.15, 95% CI 2.54–3.91), pneumonia (RR 3.97, 95% CI 3.49–4.51), respiratory failure (RR 4.10, 95% CI 3.38–4.97), urinary tract infection (RR 2.46, 95% CI 1.84–3.28), acute kidney injury (RR 3.25, 95% CI 2.94–3.60), venous thromboembolism (RR 1.48, 95% CI 1.34–1.63), and deep vein thrombosis (RR 1.42, 95% CI 1.19–1.70). In addition, cannabis use was associated with significantly greater risk of postoperative transfusion (RR 2.23, 95% CI 1.83–2.71) as well as higher hospitalization costs.ConclusionHistory of cannabis use significantly increases the risk of numerous complications and transfusion after THA or TKA, leading to greater healthcare costs. Clinicians should consider these factors when treating cannabis users, and pre-surgical protocols should give special consideration to patients with history of cannbis use.

We demonstrate a simple subwavelength all-dielectric photonic device with greatly enhanced transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) in the transmission mode. The concept utilizes the diffracted waves of the periodic magnetic material bismuth-substituted iron garnet grating to excite the guided mode in the planar waveguide, and adds a buffer layer under the all-dielectric guided mode grating. In the study, it was found that increasing the refractive index of the buffer layer can reduce the coupling between the grating and the waveguide, so that full width at half maximum of the transmission spectra can be narrowed, and the value of TMOKE can be greatly enhanced up to 1.82. It is worth noting that the TMOKE value of the guide mode grating with buffer layer is 3 times that of those without buffer layer, thus opening up different avenues for designing efficient, integrated and low-loss magneto-optical devices. Enhanced TMOKE has great potential for applications such as biosensing/high-resolution sensing, magneto-optical modulation and magnetic measurement.

Abstract Optical imaging in scattering media is important to many fields but remains challenging. Recent methods have focused on imaging through thin scattering layers or thicker scattering media with prior knowledge of the sample, but this still limits practical applications. Here, we report an imaging method named ‘speckle kinetography’ that enables high-resolution imaging in unknown scattering media with thicknesses up to about 6 transport mean free paths. Speckle kinetography non-invasively records a series of incoherent speckle images accompanied by object motion and the inherently retained object information is extracted through an overlapping speckle correlation algorithm to construct the object’s autocorrelation for imaging. Under single-colour light-emitting diode, white light, and fluorescence illumination, we experimentally demonstrate 1 μm resolution imaging and tracking of objects moving in scattering samples, while reducing the requirements for prior knowledge. We anticipate this method will enable imaging in currently inaccessible scenarios.

We investigate the optical properties and magneto-optical (MO) Faraday effect of a type of hybrid magneto-plasma crystal (HMPC) that is composed of a magnetic layer sandwiched between two Ag layers containing an array of holes. It is found that the Faraday rotation is effectively enhanced due to Fabry-Perot resonance and waveguide surface-plasmon (WSP) hybrid mode coupling, respectively, and their peaks are always consistency with the corresponding transmittance peak in position if this structure possesses with C4h symmetry. Moreover, we take the square hole array structure as an example to investigate the characteristics of the transmission and Faraday rotation spectra, and present the dependences of the transmittance, Faraday rotation angle, and figure of merit on structure parameters, such as the size of the square hole, period, and the thickness of the Ag layer. In order to understand the underlying physical mechanism of significantly enhanced Faraday rotation, we analyze the distribution of electric and magnetic fields at the two resonance wavelengths. The results indicate that the enhanced MO Faraday rotation, whose resonant wavelength is almost insensitive to the size of the square hole, is primarily caused by the Fabry-Perot resonance; the other enhanced Faraday rotation, whose resonant wavelength is almost linearly related with the size of the square hole, arises from the coupling effect between WSP hybrid mode existing in square holes of two Ag layers. The results hold significant importance for the development and application of MO devices, and provide valuable insights into the design and optimization of novel MO systems.

Abstract Geometric phase enabled by spin‐orbit coupling has attracted enormous interest in optics over the past few decades. However, it is only applicable to circularly‐polarized light and encounters substantial challenges when applied to wave fields lacking the intrinsic spin degree of freedom. Here, a new paradigm is presented for achieving geometric phase by elucidating the concept of topological complementary pair (TCP), which arises from the combination of two compact phase elements possessing opposite intrinsic topological charge. Twisting the TCP leads to the generation of a linearly‐varying geometric phase of arbitrary order, which is quantified by the intrinsic topological charge. Notably distinct from the conventional spin‐orbit coupling‐based theories, the proposed geometric phase is the direct result of the cyclic evolution of orbital‐angular‐momentum transformation in mode space, thereby exhibiting universality across classical wave systems. As a proof of concept, the existence of this geometric phase is experimentally demonstrated using scalar acoustic waves, showcasing the remarkable ability in the precise manipulation of acoustic waves at subwavelength scales. These findings engender a fresh understanding of wave‐matter interaction in compact structures and establish a promising platform for exploring geometric phase, offering significant opportunities for diverse applications in wave systems.

Objective Femoral neck fracture (FNF) is a common clinical trauma with high mortality and disability rates. Furthermore, its incidence increases exponentially with increasing age. Existing classifications have some disadvantages. Thus, this study aimed to establish a novel typing system for FNF. Methods We retrospectively analyzed all adult patients with FNF admitted to our hospital between December 2015 and November 2017 for cannulated screw internal fixation. The study population was divided into the femoral varus offset group (VAR) and the valgus offset group (VAL). The data collected included sex, age, affected side, injury mode, body mass index, complications, pelvic incidence (PI), hip deflection angle (HDA), combined deflection angle (CDA), and neck shaft angle. Statistical analysis was conducted to determine the correlation between complications and deviation angles. A novel typing system was developed and compared with the Garden classification to detect its superiority. Results A total of 108 patients were recruited, with 59 patients in the VAR and 49 patients in the VAL groups. Objective: A number of miRNAs and their targets were dragged in the differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). We aimed to elaborate the underlying molecular mechanisms of miRNA-320a in the osteoblast and adipocyte differentiation. Methods: Trauma-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (TIONFH) and normal control samples (n = 10 for each group) were collected, followed by miRNA chip analysis to identify the differentially expressed miRNAs. H&E staining was used to observe the pathological development of TIONFH. Lentiviral vector was used for overexpression and inhibition of miRNA-320a in vitro. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), Western blotting and immunohistochemistry staining were employed to determine the expression of interested genes at mRNA or protein level. Luciferase report assay was employed to determine the binding of miRNA-320a and RUNX2. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Alizarin red staining were performed to observe the osteogenesis and Oil red O staining were conducted to visualize the adipogenesis. Results: Expression of miRNA-320a was up-regulated while RUNX2 expression was down-regulated in TIONFH than Normal control. Luciferase report assay confirmed that miRNA-320a directly targeted to the 3′UTR of RUNX2. miRNA-320a overexpression significantly declined the expressions of osteogenesis-related markers: RUNX2, OSTERIX, Collagen I, Osteocalcin and Osteopontin. ALP and Alizarin red staining confirmed the inhibition function of miRNA-320a in osteogenesis of BMSCs. miRNA-320a inhibition significantly decreased the expression of adipogenesis-related markers: AP2, C/EBPα, FABP4 and PPARγ. Oil Red O staining confirmed the miRNA-320a inhibition reduced adipogenesis of BMSCs. Conclusions: miRNA-320a inhibits osteoblast differentiation via targeting RUNX2 and promotes adipocyte differentiation of BMSCs.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) play an important role in tissue healing and regenerative medicine due to their self-renewal and multi-directional differentiation properties. MSCs exert their therapeutic effects mainly via the paracrine pathway, which involves the secretion of extracellular vesicles (EVs). EVs have a high drug loading capacity and can transport various molecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids, that can modify the course of diverse diseases. Due to their ability to maintain the therapeutic effects of their parent cells, MSC-derived EVs have emerged as a promising, safe cell-free treatment approach for tissue regeneration. With advances in inflammation research and emergence of the field of osteoimmunology, evidence has accumulated pointing to the role of inflammatory and osteoimmunological processes in the occurrence and progression of orthopedic diseases. Several studies have shown that MSC-derived EVs participate in bone regeneration and the pathophysiology of orthopedic diseases by regulating the inflammatory environment, enhancing angiogenesis, and promoting the differentiation and proliferation of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. In this review, we summarize recent advances in the application and functions of MSC-derived EVs as potential therapies against orthopedic diseases, including osteoarthritis, intervertebral disc degeneration, osteoporosis and osteonecrosis.

BackgroundSmoking increases risk of several complications after total hip or knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA), so we systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed the literature to take into account all relevant evidence, particularly studies published since 2010.MethodsThe PubMed, Ovid Embase, Web of Science, and EBSCOHost databases were searched and studies were selected and analyzed according to MOOSE recommendations. Methodological quality of included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Data were qualitatively synthesized or meta-analyzed using a random-effects model.ResultsA total of 40 studies involving 3,037,683 cases were included. Qualitative analysis suggested that smoking is associated with worse patient-reported outcomes within one year after surgery, and meta-analysis showed that smoking significantly increased risk of the following outcomes: total complications (OR 1.41, 95% CI 1.01–1.98), wound complications (OR 1.77, 95% CI 1.50–2.10), prosthetic joint infection (OR 1.84, 95% CI 1.52–2.24), aseptic loosening (OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.12–2.34), revision (OR 2.12, 95% CI 1.46–3.08), cardiac arrest (OR 4.90, 95% CI 2.26–10.60), cerebrovascular accident (OR 2.22, 95% CI 1.01–4.85), pneumonia (OR 2.35, 95% CI 1.17–4.74), acute renal insufficiency (OR 2.01, 95% CI 1.48–2.73), sepsis (OR 4.35, 95% CI 1.35–14.00), inpatient mortality (OR 12.37, 95% CI 4.46–34.28), and persistent opioid consumption (OR 1.64, 95% CI 1.39–1.92).ConclusionSmoking patients undergoing THA and TKA are at increased risk of numerous complications, inpatient mortality, persistent opioid consumption, and worse 1-year patient-reported outcomes. Pre-surgical protocols for these outcomes should give special consideration to smoking patients.

Trauma‐induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (TIONFH) is characterized by femoral head collapse accompanied by degenerative changes of the hip. We previously reported that miR‐93‐5p expression is abnormally high in patients with TIONFH, but the role of miR‐93‐5p in the TIONFH process remains unclear. Herein, we investigated the role of miR‐93‐5p in TIONFH in a rabbit model. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were used for both in vivo and in vitro experiments. A rabbit model of TIONFH was injected with BMSCs transfected with miR‐93‐5p inhibitor. In addition, both an miR‐93‐5p mimic and negative control were transfected into BMSCs. Expression of miR‐93‐5p was significantly increased in the model group compared with control samples. An miR‐93‐5p inhibitor induced the expression of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP‐2) and alkaline phosphatase. Furthermore, expression of osteogenesis‐related markers (BMP‐2, secreted phosphoprotein 1, RUNX family transcription factor 2 and Osterix) was higher in the miR‐93‐5p inhibitor group, as revealed by quantitative PCR and western blotting. In addition, in vitro experimentation revealed that an miR‐93‐5p mimic decreased BMP‐2 and TNF receptor superfamily member 11b expression, but increased receptor activator of nuclear factor‐kappaB ligand expression. In summary, the miR‐93‐5p inhibitor could promote osteogenic differentiation by increasing BMP‐2 expression during the development of TIONFH. Thus, miR‐93‐5p may have potential as a therapeutic target for TIONF treatment.

Non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (NONFH) remains a common refractory disease with poorly understood pathogenesis. Macrophage M1/M2 imbalance and chronic inflammatory microenvironment have been suggested to be closely related to osteonecrosis. Here we describe direct visual evidence for the involvement of dynamic changes in macrophages and the chronic inflammatory microenvironment in human NONFH. Osteonecrosis induces inflammatory responses and macrophage enrichment in the reparative area, and the number of inflammatory cells and macrophages falls during progressive-to end-stage NONFH. Multiplex immunohistochemistry demonstrated that macrophage M1/M2 ratio increased from 3 to 10 during progressive-to end-stage. During the progressive-stage, new blood vessels formed in the reparative area, M2 macrophages accumulated in perivascular (M1/M2 ratio ∼0.05), while M1 macrophages were enriched in avascular areas (M1/M2 ratio ∼12). Furthermore, inflammatory cytokines were detected in synovial fluid and plasma using cytometric bead arrays. Interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1β were persistently enriched in synovial fluid compared to plasma in patients with NONFH, and this difference was confirmed by immunohistochemistry staining. However, only IL-6 levels in plasma were higher in patients with progressive-stage NONFH than in osteoarthritis. Moreover, fibrosis tissues were observed in the necrotic area in progressive-stage and end-stage NONFH based on Sirius Red staining. Together, these findings indicate that macrophage M1/M2 imbalance facilitates the progression of NONFH, a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by chronic inflammation, osteonecrosis and tissue fibrosis in the local lesion. Inhibiting inflammation, promoting the resolution of inflammation, switching macrophages to an M2 phenotype, or inhibiting their adoption of an M1 phenotype may be useful therapeutic strategies against NONFH.

We aimed to identify specific circular RNAs (circRNAs) involved in bone repair of trauma-induced osteonecrosis of femoral head (TIONFH) and to explore the potential mechanism. CircRNA sequencing on the blood sample collected from patients with and without TIONFH was performed to select cirRNAs that were significantly differentially expressed, followed by qRT-PCR confirmation. Furthermore, the functions of one selected circRNA and the potential mechanisms in bone repair of TIONFH were validated based on the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and osteoclast-like cells (OLCs) through CCK-8, flow cytometry, transwell assay, luciferase reporter assay, and western blot. A total of 234 upregulated and 148 downregulated differentially expressed circRNAs were identified, and qRT-PCR showed that circRNA_25487 was significantly upregulated in the peripheral blood of TIONFH patients. Luciferase reporter assay confirmed the binding effect between miR-134-3p and circRNA_25487. CircRNA_25487 suppression and miR-134-3p overexpression could promote cell proliferation and invasion while inhibited apoptosis of BMSCs and OLCs. miR-134-3p could target p21. CircRNA_25487 inhibited bone repair in TIONFH by sponging miR-134-3p to upregulate the expression of p21.

We have proposed and investigated an ultra-compact graphene-based plasmonic device, where the propagation direction of SPP can be controlled flexibly by changing the chemical potential of graphene. The plasmonic devices with numerous functions, including splitter and router, could be realized by manipulating graphene SPP propagation direction. The designed structure is essential for the photonic integration system, including nanoscale multiplexers, multifunctional devices, and on-chips routing system.

Abstract Water electrolysis at high current density (1000 mA cm−2 level) with excellent durability especially in neutral electrolyte is the pivotal issue for green hydrogen from experiment to industrialization. In addition to the high intrinsic activity determined by the electronic structure, electrocatalysts are also required to be capable of fast mass transfer (electrolyte recharge and bubble overflow) and high mechanical stability. Herein, the 2D CoOOH sheet-encapsulated Ni2P into tubular arrays electrocatalytic system was proposed and realized 1000 mA cm−2-level-current-density hydrogen evolution over 100 h in neutral water. In designed catalysts, 2D stack structure as an adaptive material can buffer the shock of electrolyte convection, hydrogen bubble rupture, and evolution through the release of stress, which insure the long cycle stability. Meanwhile, the rich porosity between stacked units contributed the good infiltration of electrolyte and slippage of hydrogen bubbles, guaranteeing electrolyte fast recharge and bubble evolution at the high-current catalysis. Beyond that, the electron structure modulation induced by interfacial charge transfer is also beneficial to enhance the intrinsic activity. Profoundly, the multiscale coordinated regulation will provide a guide to design high-efficiency industrial electrocatalysts.

Objective: The aim of this study was to retrospectively compare and evaluate the midterm curative effect of two different bone flap grafts in the treatment of early non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). Methods: A total of 180 patients (199 hips) with early non-traumatic ONFH received surgical treatment by sartorius muscle-pedicle bone flap graft (SMBF) (104 patients, 64 males and 40 females; mean age 34.67 ± 3.24 years) or circumflex iliac deep bone flap graft (CIDBF) (76 patients, 44 males and 32 females; mean age: 35.54 ± 3.37 years) from July 2004 to July 2009. The comparison between the groups was made with Harris score before and after surgery, length of incision, operative time, amount of bleeding, postoperative X-ray. Association Research Circulation Osseous (ARCO) staging was performed. Results: The preoperative Harris hip score of two groups were 68.26 ± 1.26 and 69.35 ± 1.31, respectively. Patients' ARCO staging indicated 36 hips of stage IIa, 115 hips of stage IIb and 48 hips of stage IIc. The etiology of ONFH mainly including hormones (93 patients), alcohol (64 patients) and other (23 patients). The mean follow-up time of SMBF and CIDBF groups were (51.78 ± 2.35) and (52.73 ± 3.71) months, respectively. The time of removing sutures, operation time, amount of bleeding and length of incision in SMBF group were superior to those in the CIDBF group, and those differences between the SMBF and CIDBF groups were not significant (all p values > 0.28). The Harris score between the two groups was similar after operation and postoperative 12 month, and the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05), whereas the difference of the postoperative 24 and 48 months was statistically significant (p ˂ 0.05). X-ray analysis showed improvement of osteonecrosis in both two groups after surgery, and as time went on, the total hip amount decreased, the replacement amount increased. Conclusion: Both bone flap grafts appear to be effective methods for treatment of early osteonecrosis of femoral head (ARCOⅡ), and the SMBF is a relatively simple technique and easy for mastering, and it is a reliable method for clinical application. The supercapacitor has been widely seen as one of the most promising emerging energy storage devices, by which electricity is converted from chemical energy and stored. Two-dimensional (2D) metal oxides/hydroxides (TMOs/TMHs) are revolutionizing the design of high-performance supercapacitors because of their high theoretical specific capacitance, abundance of electrochemically active sites, and feasibility for assembly in hierarchical structures by integrating with graphitic carbon, conductive polymers, and so on. The hierarchical structures achieved can not only overcome the limitations of using a single material but also bring new breakthroughs in performance. In this article, the research progress on 2D TMOs/TMHs and their use in hierarchical structures as supercapacitor materials are reviewed, including the evolution of supercapacitor materials, the configurations of hierarchical structures, the electrical properties regulated, and the existence of advantages and drawbacks. Finally, a perspective covering directions and challenges related to the development of supercapacitor materials is provided.

Light enhancement and confinement in a nanometer-wide low-index material was proposed and demonstrated in a low index slot waveguide (LISW). To further reduce the mode width, a 5-layer metal/high index/low index/high index/metal hybrid nanoslot waveguide (HNSW) was constructed by replacing the outmost layer of LISW with a metal layer in which only TM modes exist. In this work, we analytically solve the guided-wave modes in the HNSW that are divided into six types according to the effective refractive index and the symmetry of the field distribution, and derive their dispersion equations and discuss the cut-off conditions. Two new guided-wave modes appear in HNSW that do not exist in the LISW structure. The abilities of light confinement of zero-order even modes between the HNSW structure and the LISW structure are compared, and the HNSW shows stronger light-confined ability and narrower mode than LISW, which makes it possible to simultaneously increase light-confined ability and reduce mode width in HNSW. For the specific Au/Si/SiO2/Si/Au HNSW, considering the metal loss will not change the basic properties of the zero-order modes at 1550 nm, except that the mode propagation length is reduced to a few microns.

Abstract Background Perioperative systemic steroid administration for rapid recovery in total knee and hip arthroplasty (TKA/THA) is an important and controversial topic. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the overall benefits and harms of perioperative systemic steroid in patients undergoing TKA and THA. Methods A comprehensive search was performed on PubMed, OVID, and Web of Science databases, and a systematic approach was carried out starting from the PRISMA recommendations. Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were selected. The risk of bias was evaluated according to the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions version. Data were extracted and meta-analyzed or qualitatively synthesized for all the outcomes. Results Data were extracted from 11 trials involving 774 procedures. Meta-analysis showed that high-dose systemic steroid (dexamethasone > 0.1 mg/kg) rather than low dose is effective to reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting and postoperative acute pain (within 24 h). In addition, systemic steroid is associated within faster functional rehabilitation and greater inflammation control. On the other hand, systemic steroid is associated with a higher level of postoperative serum glucose on the operation day. The complications between groups are similarly low. Conclusions Our study suggests that by providing lower incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting and less postoperative acute pain, high-dose systemic steroid plays a critical role in rapid recovery to TKA and THA. The preliminary results also show the superior possibility of systemic steroid in functional rehabilitation and inflammation control. More large, high-quality studies that investigate the safety and dose–response relationship are necessary.

Objective(s): Naringin has been reported to regulate bone metabolism. However, its effect on osteogenesis remains unclear. The aim was to investigate the effect of naringin on osteogenic differentiation of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) through the activation of the ERK signaling pathway in osteogenic differentiation. Materials and Methods: Annexin V-FITC assay and MTT assay were used to measure the effect of naringin on cytotoxicity and proliferation of hBMSCs, respectively. Alkaline phosphatase activity analysis, Alizarin Red S staining, Western blotting, and real-time PCR assay were used to evaluate both the potential effect of naringin on osteogenic differentiation and the role of ERK signaling pathway in osteogenic differentiation. Results: Our results showed that naringin had no obvious toxicity on hBMSCs, and could significantly promote the proliferation of hBMSCs. Naringin also enhanced the osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs and increased the protein and mRNA expression levels of osteogenic markers such as Runx-2, OXS, OCN, and Col1 in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, we found that the enhancing effect of naringin on osteogenic differentiation was related to the activation of phosphor-ERK, with an increase in duration of activity from 30 min to 120 min. More importantly, both the enhancing effect of naringin on osteogenic differentiation and the activity effect of naringin on ERK signaling pathway were reversed by U0126 addition. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that naringin promoted proliferation and osteogenesis of hBMSCs by activating the ERK signaling pathway and it might be a potential therapeutic agent for treating or preventing osteoporosis.

A compact plasmonic nanofilter based on the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide with an Archimedes' spiral structure is proposed and demonstrated by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The simulation results indicate that the transmission valley and peak can be tuned by the rotation angle θ of the right-handed Archimedes spiral structure and the number of channels can be adjusted by number of right-handed Archimedes spiral rings. The characteristics of the transmission spectra could be explained by the resonant condition, which is in good agreement with the FDTD numerical simulation. The unique feature may have many potential applications in filter, sensor, and photonic integrated circuits.

Objective This study aimed to investigate the damage pattern of the stress transfer path (STP) for the Japanese Investigation Committee (JIC) classification of pre-collapse osteonecrosis of the femoral head. We aimed to provide a specific biomechanical basis for treatment decisions of each subtype. Methods Five computational models were used in the experiment. Different necrotic classifications were simulated based on the JIC classification system. Damage patterns of the STP were used for qualitative assessment and average stresses were used for quantitative analysis. Results The STP of type A showed a strong similarity to the healthy level, which was consistent with the bone density distribution in X-rays and previous simulations results. The damaged area of principal stress of type B was approximately 25% of the healthy level. The STPs of types C1 and C2 were broken and the damaged areas of principal stress were more than 50% of the healthy level. The efficiency of stress transfer was reduced. Conclusions These results indicate that the damage patterns and stress transfer efficiency of the femoral head are associated with necrotic classifications.

A nonlinear inversion scheme is proposed for electromagnetic inverse scattering imaging. It exploits inexact Newton (IN) and least square QR factorization (LSQR) methods to tackle the nonlinearity and ill-posedness of the electromagnetic inverse scattering problem. A nonlinear model of the inverse scattering in functional form is developed. At every IN iteration, the sparse storage method is adopted to solve the storage and computational bottleneck of Fréchet derivative matrix, a large-scale sparse Jacobian matrix. Moreover, to address the slow convergence problem encountered in the inexact Newton solution via Landweber iterations, an LSQR algorithm is proposed for obtaining a better solution of the internal large-scale sparse linear equations in the IN step. Numerical results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed IN-LSQR method to quantitative inversion of scatterer electric performance parameters. Moreover, compared with the inexact Newton method based on Landweber iterations, the proposed method significantly improves the convergence rate with less computational and storage cost.

Differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells into adipocytes involves a highly-orchestrated series of events including contact inhibition (CI), clonal expansion, growth arrest, and terminal differentiation. Recent study demonstrated that 3T3-L1 preadipocytes will not be differentiated into mature adipocytes without CI stage, which indicated that CI stage plays an important role during 3T3-L1 adipogenesis. However, the molecular mechanism is not yet fully understood. In the present study, we found that the expression level of miR-29a/b/c was decreased and the expression of DNMT3A was up-regulated during CI stage, respectively. Furthermore, overexpression of miR-29a/b/c during CI stage inhibits adipogenesis significantly but not at other stages. In addition, miR-29a/b/c repressed DNMT3A expression by directly targeting its 3' untranslated region (3' UTR). Our data reveal a novel mechanism of miR-29a/b/c in the regulation of adipogenesis.

We present a spatial frequency domain multiplexing method for extending the imaging depth range of a spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) system without any expensive device. This method uses two galvo scanners with different pivot-offset distances in two independent reference arms for spatial frequency modulation and multiplexing. The spatial frequency contents corresponding to different depth regions of the sample can be shifted to different frequency bands. The spatial frequency domain multiplexing SDOCT system provides an approximately 1.9-fold increase in the effective ranging depth compared with that of a conventional full-range SDOCT system. The reconstructed images of phantom and biological tissue demonstrate the expected increase in ranging depth. The parameters choice criterion for this method is discussed.

Sequentially managing the coverage and dimerization of *CO on the Cu catalysts is desirable for industrial-current-density CO2 reduction (CO2R) to C2+, which required the multiscale design of the surface atom/architecture. However, the oriented design is colossally difficult and even no longer valid due to unpredictable reconstruction. Here, we leverage the synchronous leaching of ligand molecules to manipulate the seeding-growth process during CO2R reconstruction and construct Cu arrays with favorable (100) facets. The gradient diffusion in the reconstructed array guarantees a higher *CO coverage, which can continuously supply the reactant to match its high-rate consumption for high partial current density for C2+. Sequentially, the lower energy barriers of *CO dimerization on the (100) facets contribute to the high selectivity of C2+. Profiting from this sequential *CO management, the reconstructed Cu array delivers an industrial-relevant FEC2+ of 86.1% and an FEC2H4 of 60.8% at 700 mA cm-2. Profoundly, the atomic-molecular scale delineation for the evolution of catalysts and reaction intermediates during CO2R can undoubtedly facilitate various electrocatalytic reactions.
