Search

YbOCl is a representative member of the van der Waals layered honeycomb rare-earth chalcohalide REChX (RE = rare earth, Ch = O, S, Se, and Te, and X = F, Cl, Br, and I) family reported recently. Its spin ground state remains to be explored experimentally. In this paper, we have grown high-quality single crystals of YbOCl and conducted comprehensive thermodynamic, elastic, and inelastic neutron scattering experiments down to 50 mK. The experiments reveal an antiferromagnetic phase below 1.3 K, which is identified as a spin ground state with an intralayer ferromagnetic and interlayer antiferromagnetic ordering. By applying sophisticated numerical techniques to a honeycomb (nearest-neighbor)-triangle (next-nearest-neighbor) model Hamiltonian which accurately describes the highly anisotropic spin system, we are able to well simulate the experiments and determine the diagonal and off-diagonal spin-exchange interactions. The simulations give an antiferromagnetic Kitaev term comparable to the Heisenberg one. The experiments under magnetic fields allow us to establish a magnetic field-temperature phase diagram around the spin ground state. Most interestingly, a relatively small magnetic field (~ 0.3 to 3 T) can significantly suppress the antiferromagnetic order, suggesting an intriguing interplay of the Kitaev interaction and magnetic fields in the spin system. Supersolid is an exotic quantum state of matter that hosts spontaneously the features of both solid and superfluidity, which breaks the lattice translational symmetry and U(1) gauge symmetry. Here we conduct inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements and tensor-network calculations on the triangular-lattice cobaltate Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$, which is proposed in [Xiang ${\it et al.}$, Nature 625, 270-275 (2024)] as a quantum magnetic analog of supersolid. We uncover characteristic dynamical signatures, which include distinct magnetic Bragg peaks indicating out-of-plane spin solidity and gapless Goldstone modes corresponding to the in-plane spin superfluidity, offering comprehensive spectroscopic evidence for spin supersolid in Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$. We also compute spin dynamics of the easy-axis triangular-lattice model, and reveal magnon-roton excitations containing U(1) Goldstone and roton modes associated with the in-plane spin superfluidity, as well as pseudo-Goldstone and roton modes related to the out-of-plane spin solidity, rendering double magnon-roton dispersions in the spin supersolid. Akin to the role of phonon-roton dispersion in shaping the helium thermodynamics, the intriguing magnetic excitations also strongly influence the low-temperature thermodynamics of spin supersolid down to sub-Kelvin regime, explaining the recently observed giant magnetocaloric effect in Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$.

Continuum of spin excitations observed in inelastic neutron scattering experiments are often considered as a strong evidence of quantum spin liquid formation. When quantum spin liquid is indeed the ground state of a disorder-free magnetic compound, the elementary excitation is no longer the conventional spin waves (magnons). Instead, the magnons fractionalize into spinons, leaving only a two-spinon continuum detectable in inelastic neutron scattering experiments. For a clean ordered antiferromagnet, it was unclear if we can observe a continuous spectrum similar to the ones in a quantum spin liquid state. Here we show that the magnetically ordered state in Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$ is able to host a spin excitation continuum induced by strong quantum fluctuations. After several decades of studies of high-temperature superconductivity, there is no compelling theory for the mechanism yet; however, the spin fluctuations have been widely believed to play a crucial role in forming the superconducting Cooper pairs. The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity near 80 K in the bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure provides a new platform to elucidate the origins of high-temperature superconductivity. We perform elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies on a polycrystalline sample of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-\delta}$ at ambient pressure. No magnetic order can be identified down to 10 K. The absence of long-range magnetic order in neutron diffraction measurements may be ascribed to the smallness of the magnetic moment. However, we observe a weak flat spin-fluctuation signal at $\sim$ 45 meV in the inelastic scattering spectra. The observed spin excitations could be interpreted as a result of strong interlayer and weak intralayer magnetic couplings for stripe-type antiferromagnetic orders. Fractional magnetisation plateaus, in which the magnetisation is pinned at a fraction of its saturated value within a range of external magnetic field, are spectacular macroscopic manifestations of the collective quantum behaviours. One prominent example of the plateau phase is found in spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnets featuring strong geometrical frustration, and is often interpreted as quantum-fluctuation-stabilised state in magnetic field via the "order-by-disorder" mechanism. Here, we observe an unprecedented 1/3 magnetisation plateau between 5.2 and 7.4 T at 2 K in a spin-1 antiferromagnet Na$_3$Ni$_2$BiO$_6$ with a honeycomb lattice, where conventionally no geometrical frustration is anticipated. By carrying out elastic neutron scattering measurements, we propose the spin structure of the plateau phase to be an unusual partial spin-flop ferrimagnetic order, transitioning from the zigzag antiferromagnetic order in zero field. Our theoretical calculations show that the plateau phase is stabilised by the bond-anisotropic Kitaev interaction. Due to the complex interactions between rare-earth elements and transition metals, as well as between themselves, rare-earth transition-metal oxides are likely to exhibit highly intriguing and novel magnetic structures and dynamic behaviours. Rare-earth elements in these compounds frequently demonstrate unusual behaviours in their crystal-field (CF) excitations, which necessitate thorough studies for in-depth comprehensions. When cooling from 10 K to 1.5 K through the magnetic ordering temperature of $Er^{3+}$ at 4.1 K, we observed a significant energy shift of the low-lying CF excitation of $Er^{3+}$ in erbium orthoferrite ($ErFeO_3$) from 0.32 meV to 0.75 meV utilizing the inelastic neutron-scattering technique. A sound CF model was proposed for $Er^{3+}$ in $ErFeO_3$ by fitting to the observed CF excitation peaks, which enables to explain all the observed experimental results in a very consistent manner. According to the model, the ground crystal field level of $Er^{3+}$, which corresponds to the lowest Kramers doublet supposed to be at zero energy transfer, has been shifted by the internal magnetic fields induced by both $Er^{3+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ spin orders below and above the $Er^{3+}$ ordering temperature, respectively. Additional measurements in various magnetic fields offer compelling evidence in favour of this hypothesis. The measured external field dependence of the CF excitation energy led to a derivation of the internal field of $Er^{3+}$ as 0.54 T, which is strongly corroborated by theoretical modelling. In the realm of nanoscience, the dynamic behaviors of liquids at scales beyond the conventional structural relaxation time, $\tau$, unfold a fascinating blend of solid-like characteristics, including the propagation of collective shear waves and the emergence of elasticity. However, in classical bulk liquids, where $\tau$ is typically of the order of 1 ps or less, this solid-like behavior remains elusive in the low-frequency region of the density of states (DOS). Here, we provide evidence for the emergent solid-like nature of liquids at short distances through inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the low-frequency DOS in liquid water and glycerol confined within graphene oxide membranes. In particular, upon increasing the strength of confinement, we observe a transition from a liquid-like DOS (linear in the frequency $\omega$) to a solid-like behavior (Debye law, $\sim\omega^2$) in the range of $1$-$4$ meV. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm these findings and reveal additional solid-like features, including propagating collective shear waves and a reduction in the self-diffusion constant. Finally, we show that the onset of solid-like dynamics is pushed towards low frequency along with the slowing-down of the relaxation processes upon confinement. Interactions of collective excitations often lead to rich emergent phenomena in many-particle quantum systems. In ordered magnets, the elementary excitations are spin waves (magnons), which obey Bose-Einstein statistics. Similar to the Cooper pairs in superconductors, magnons can be paired into bound states under attractive interactions. Even more interestingly, the Zeeman coupling to a magnetic field acts as a chemical potential that can tune the particle density through a quantum critical point (QCP), beyond which a ``hidden order'' is predicted to exist. However, experimental confirmation of this QCP and the associated new state of matter remain elusive. Here we report direct observation of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of the two-magnon bound state in Na$_2$BaNi(PO$_4$)$_2$. Comprehensive thermodynamic measurements confirmed the existence of a two-dimensional BEC-QCP at the saturation field. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed to accurately establish the magnetic exchange model. An exact solution of the model found stable 2-magnon bound states that were further confirmed by an electron spin resonance (ESR) experiment, demonstrating that the QCP is due to the pair condensation and the phase below saturation field is the long-sought-after spin nematic (SN) phase., Comment: 53 pages, 28 figures

We report neutron-scattering measurements of the density of states (DOS) of water and liquid Fomblin in a wide range of temperatures. In the liquid phase, we confirm the presence of a universal low-energy linear scaling of the experimental DOS as a function of the frequency, $g(\omega)= a(T) \omega$, which persists at all temperatures. The low-frequency scaling of the DOS exhibits a sharp jump at the melting point of water, below which the standard Debye's law, $g(\omega) \propto \omega^2$, is recovered. On the contrary, in Fomblin, we observe a continuous transition between the two exponents reflecting its glassy dynamics, which is confirmed by structure measurements. More importantly, in both systems, we find that the slope $a(T)$ grows with temperature following an exponential Arrhenius-like form, $a(T) \propto \exp(-\langle E \rangle /T)$. We confirm this experimental trend using molecular dynamics simulations and show that the prediction of instantaneous normal mode (INM) theory for $a(T)$ is in qualitative agreement with the experimental data., Comment: v3: revised manuscript

The rare-earth perovskite TbScO$_3$ has been widely used as a substrate for the growth of epitaxial ferroelectric and multiferroic thin films, while its detailed low-temperature magnetic properties were rarely reported. In this paper, we performed detailed magnetization, specific heat and single crystal neutron scattering measurements, along with the crystalline electric field calculations to study the low-temperature magnetic properties of TbScO$_3$. All our results suggest the magnetic Tb$^{3+}$ has an Ising-like pseudo-doublet ground state at low temperatures. Due to the constrain of local point symmetry, these Tb$^{3+}$ Ising moments are confined in the $ab$ plane with a tilt angle of $\varphi = \pm48^{\mathrm{o}}$ to the $a$ axis. In zero field, the system undergoes an antiferromagnetic phase transition at $T_{\mathrm{N}}=2.53$ K, and forms a $G_xA_y$ noncollinear magnetic structure below $T_{\mathrm{N}}$. We find the dipole-dipole interactions play an important role to determine the magnetic ground state, which are also responsible for the quasi-one-dimensional magnetism in TbScO$_3$. The significant anisotropic diffuse scatterings further confirm the quasi-one-dimensional magnetism along the $c$ axis. The magnetic phase diagram with the field along the easy $b$ axis is well established. In addition to the $G_xA_y$ antiferromagnetic state, there is an exotic field-induced phase emerged near the critical field $B_{\mathrm{c}}\simeq0.7$ T, where three-dimensional magnetic order is suppressed but strong one-dimensional correlations may still exist., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

In a Dirac semimetal, the massless Dirac fermion has zero chirality, leading to surface states connected adiabatically to a topologically trivial surface state as well as vanishing anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Recently, it is predicted that in the nonrelativistic limit of certain collinear antiferromagnets, there exists a type of chiral Dirac-like fermion, whose dispersion manifests four-fold degenerate crossing points formed by spin-degenerate linear bands, with topologically protected Fermi arcs. Such unconventional chiral fermion, protected by a hidden SU(2) symmetry in the hierarchy of an enhanced crystallographic group, namely spin space group, is not experimentally verified yet. Here, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, we reveal the surface origin of the electron pocket at the Fermi surface in collinear antiferromagnet CoNb3S6. Combining with neutron diffraction and first-principles calculations, we suggest a multidomain collinear AFM configuration, rendering the the existence of the Fermi-arc surface states induced by chiral Dirac-like fermions. Our work provides spectral evidence of the chiral Dirac-like fermion caused by particular spin symmetry in CoNb3S6, paving an avenue for exploring new emergent phenomena in antiferromagnets with unconventional quasiparticle excitations., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

We present studies on crystal structure and ionic diffusion behaviors of superionic Cu$_{2-\delta}$Se ($\delta$=0, 0.04, and 0.2) by utilizing neutron powder diffraction and quasi-elastic neutron scattering. In the superionic phase, the structural model with Cu ions occupying the Wyckoff sites of 8$c$ and 32$f$ provides the best description of the structure. As the content of Cu increasing in Cu$_{2-\delta}$Se, the Cu occupancy increases on the 32$f$ site, but decreases on the 8$c$ site . Fitting to the quasi-elastic neutron scattering spectra reveals two diffusion modes, the localized diffusion between the 8$c$ and 32$f$ sites and the long-range diffusion between the adjacent 8$c$ sites using the 32$f$ site as a bypass, respectively. Between 430 and 650 K, we measured that the compound with more Cu content exhibits a larger long-range diffusion coefficient. Temperature in this range does not affect the long-range diffusion process obviously. Our results suggest the two diffusion modes cooperative and thus provide a microscopic understanding of the ionic diffusion of the Cu ions in superionic Cu$_{2-\delta}$Se., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

As a nontrivial solid state of matter, the glassy-crystal state embraces physical features of both crystalline and amorphous solids, where a long-range ordered periodic structure formed by the mass centers of constituent molecules accommodates orientational glasses. Here, we discover and validate a glassy-crystal state in 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (AMP, C4H11NO2) by neutron scattering and complementary broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) measurements. The freezing process of the dynamic orientational disorder is manifested at relaxation times well described by the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) law and the strongly frequency-dependent freezing temperature ranging from around 225 K at 0.1 Hz to above room temperature in the GHz region. At room temperature, the supercooled state is extremely sensitive to pressure such that a few MPa pressure can induce crystallization to the ordered crystal state, eventually leading to a temperature increase by 48 K within 20 s, a significant reduction of visible light transmittance from about 95% to a few percentages, and a remarkable decrease of electrical conductivity by three orders of magnitude. These ultrasensitive baroresponsivities might find their applications in low-grade waste heat recycling, pressure sensors and non-volatile memory devices. An analytical model describing the vibrational phonon density of states (VDOS) of liquids has long been elusive, mainly due to the difficulty in dealing with the imaginary modes dominant in the low-energy region, as described by the instantaneous normal mode (INM) approach. Nevertheless, Zaccone and Baggioli have recently developed such a model based on overdamped Langevin liquid dynamics. The model was proposed to be the universal law for the vibrational density of states of liquids. Distinct from the Debye law, g({\omega}) ~ {\omega}2, for solids, the universal law for liquids reveals a linear relationship, g({\omega}) ~ {\omega}, in the low-energy region. The universal law has been successfully verified with computer simulated VDOS for Lennard-Jones liquids. We further confirm this universal law with experimental VDOS measured by inelastic neutron scattering on real liquid systems including water, liquid metal, and polymer liquids. We have applied this model and extracted the effective relaxation rate for the short time dynamics for each liquid. The model has been further evaluated in the predication of the specific heat. Cobaltates with 3$d$ based layered honeycomb structure were recently proposed as Kitaev magnets and putative candidates to host the long-sought Kitaev spin liquid. Here we present inelastic neutron scattering results down to 50 mK for powder samples of Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, with high resolution in regions of low momentum and energy transfers. We compare the experimental data below the antiferromagnetic zigzag ordering temperature with dynamical structure factors obtained within spin wave theory. We search the wide parameter range of a $K$-$J_1$-$\Gamma$-$\Gamma^{\prime}$-$J_3$ spin 1/2 model and identify the best fits to constant momentum cuts of the inelastic neutron data. The powder average limits the selection of a unique parameter set for each material, but we see clear trends towards ferromagnetic Kitaev exchange in both compounds, and ratios $|K/J_1|$ could be as large as $5\ldots 25$; in contrast, antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchange cannot be ruled out, but requires a fine-tuning of all involved spin exchange couplings with only moderate ratio $|K/J_1| \sim 1$. Solid-state refrigeration based on caloric effects is an energetically efficient and environmentally friendly technology, which is deemed as a potential alternative to the conventional vapor-compression technology. One of the greatest obstacles to the real application is the huge driving fields. Here, we report a giant barocaloric effect in inorganic NH4I with maximum entropy changes of {\Delta}S_BCE^max ~89 J K-1 kg-1 around room temperature, associated with the orientationally order-disorder phase transition. The phase transition temperature, Tt, varies dramatically with pressure in a rate of dTt/dP ~0.81 K MPa-1, which leads to a very much small saturation driving pressure of {\Delta}P ~20 MPa, an unprecedentedly large caloric strength of |{\Delta}S_BCE^max/{\Delta}P| ~4.45 J K-1 kg-1 MPa-1, as well as a broad temperature window of ~68 K under an 80 MPa driving pressure. Comprehensive characterization of the crystal structure and dynamics by neutron scattering measurements reveals a strong reorientation-vibration coupling that is responsible for the large pressure sensitivity of Tt. Due to the complex interactions between rare-earth elements and transition metals, as well as/or themselves, rare-earth transition-metal oxides are likely to exhibit highly intriguing and novel magnetic structures and dynamic behaviours. Rare-earth elements in these compounds frequently demonstrate unusual behaviours in their crystal-field (CF) excitations, which necessitate thorough research for in-depth comprehensions. When cooling from 10 K to 1.5 K via the magnetic ordering temperature of Er3+ at 4.1 K, we observed a significant energy shift of the low-lying CF excitation of Er3+ in ErFeO3 from 0.35 meV to 0.75 meV utilizing the inelastic neutron-scattering technique. A sound CF model was proposed for Er3+ in ErFeO3 by fitting to the observed CF excitation peaks, which enables to explain all the observed experimental results in a very consistent manner. According to the model, the ground crystal field level of Er3+, which corresponds to the lowest Kramers doublet supposed to be at zero energy, has been shifted by the internal magnetic fields induced by both Er3+ and Fe3+ spin orders below and above the Er3+ ordering temperature, respectively. Crystal-field excitations, for example in transition-metal oxides where a rare-earth element is used as a spacer between the transition-metal-oxide tetrahedra and octahedra, are assumed to be extremely robust with respect to external perturbations such as temperature. Using inelastic neutron scattering experiments, a giant shift of the energy of the lowest crystal-field excitation of Er3+ (4I15/2) in ErFeO3 from 0.30(2) meV to 0.75(2) meV was measured below the magnetic-ordering temperature of erbium at 4.1 K. Quantum-mechanical point-charge calculations of the crystal-field levels indicate that the shift is caused by the internal magnetic field created by the erbium spins themselves, which causes a Zeeman splitting of the erbium 4f electronic levels, and therefore a change in the energies of crystal-field transitions. To verify this explanation, the effect of an external magnetic field on the crystal-field excitations was measured by inelastic neutron scattering and compared to the field-dependent point-charge calculations. Atomic vibrations play a vital role in the functions of various physical, chemical, and biological systems. The vibrational properties and the specific heat of crystalline bulk materials are well described by Debye theory, which successfully predicts the quadratic $\omega^{2}$ low-frequency scaling of the vibrational density of states (VDOS) in bulk ordered solids from few fundamental assumptions. However, the analogous framework for nanoconfined materials with fewer degrees of freedom has been far less well explored. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we characterize the VDOS of amorphous ice confined to a thickness of $\approx 1$ nm inside graphene oxide membranes and we observe a crossover from the Debye $\omega^2$ scaling to an anomalous $\omega^3$ behaviour upon reducing the confinement size $L$. Additionally, using molecular dynamics simulations, we confirm the experimental findings and also prove that such a scaling of the VDOS appears in both crystalline and amorphous solids under slab-confinement. We theoretically demonstrate that this low-frequency $\omega^3$ law results from the geometric constraints on the momentum phase space induced by confinement along one spatial direction. Finally, we predict that the Debye scaling reappears at a characteristic frequency $\omega_\times= v L/2\pi$, with $v$ the speed of sound of the material, and we confirm this quantitative estimate with simulations. This new physical phenomenon, revealed by combining theoretical, experimental and simulations results, is relevant to a myriad of systems both in synthetic and biological contexts and it could impact various technological applications for systems under confinement such as nano-devices or thin films., Comment: v2: revised manuscript, matching the published version

Nowadays the world is facing a prominent paradox regarding thermal energy. The production of heat accounts for more than 50% of global final energy consumption while the waste heat potential analysis reveals that 72% of the global primary energy consumption is lost after conversion mainly in the form of heat. Towards global decarbonization, it is of vital importance to establish a solution to thermal energy utilization under full control. Here, we propose and realize an unprecedented concept -- barocaloric thermal batteries based on the inverse colossal barocaloric effect of NH4SCN. Thermal charging is initialized upon pressurization through an order-to-disorder phase transition below 364 K and in turn the discharging of 43 J g-1, which are eleven times more than the input mechanical energy, occurs on demand at depressurization at lower temperatures. The discharging is also manifested as a directly measured temperature rise of 12 K. The thermodynamic equilibrium nature of the pressure-restrained heat-carrying phase guarantees stable storage and/or transport over a variety of temporal and/or spatial scales. Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are an exotic state of matter that is subject to extensive research. However, the relationship between the ubiquitous disorder and the QSL behaviors is still unclear. Here, by performing comparative experimental studies on two kagom\'{e}-lattice QSL candidates, Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ and Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Mg$_2$O$_{14}$, which are isostructural to each other but with strong and weak structural disorder, respectively, we show unambiguously that the disorder can induce spin-liquid-like features. In particular, both compounds show dominant antiferromagnetic interactions with a Curie-Weiss temperature of -17.4 and -28.7 K for Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ and Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Mg$_2$O$_{14}$, respectively, but remain disordered down to about 0.05 K. Specific heat results suggest the presence of gapless magnetic excitations characterized by a residual linear term. Magnetic excitation spectra obtained by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) at low temperatures display broad continua. All these observations are consistent with those of a QSL. However, we find in Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ which has strong disorder resulting from the random mixing of the magnetic Tm$^{3+}$ and nonmagnetic Zn$^{2+}$, that the low-energy magnetic excitations observed in the specific heat and INS measurements are substantially enhanced, compared to those of Tm$_3$Sb$_3$Mg$_2$O$_{14}$ which has much less disorder. We believe that the effective spins of the Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the Zn$^{2+}$/Mg$^{2+}$ sites give rise to the low-energy magnetic excitations, and the amount of the random occupancy determines the excitation strength. First-order magnetic transitions are of both fundamental and technological interest given that a number of emergent phases and functionalities are thereby created. Of particular interest are giant magnetocaloric effects, which are attributed to first-order magnetic transitions and have attracted broad attention for solid-state refrigeration applications. While the conventional wisdom is that atomic lattices play an important role in first-order magnetic transitions, a coherent microscopic description of the lattice and spin degrees of freedom is still lacking. Here, we study the magnetic phase transition dynamics on the intermetallic LaFe13-xSix, which is one of the most classical giant magnetocaloric systems, in both frequency and time domains utilizing neutron scattering and ultrafast X-ray diffraction. We have observed a strong magnetic diffuse scattering in the paramagnetic state preceding the first-order magnetic transition, corresponding to picosecond ferromagnetic fluctuations. Upon photon-excitation, the ferromagnetic state is completely suppressed in 0.9 ps and recovered in 20 ps. The ultrafast dynamics suggest that the magnetic degree of freedom dominates this magnetoelastic transition and ferromagnetic fluctuations might be universally relevant for this kind of compounds., Comment: 5 figures in the main text, plus supplementary information

We report studies of the magnetic properties of a staggered stacked triangular lattice Ba$_2$MnTeO$_6$ using magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, neutron powder diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements, as well as first principles density functional theory calculations. Neutron diffraction measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic order with a propagated vector $\textbf{\emph{k}}=(0.5, 0.5, 0)$ and N{\'{e}}el transition temperature of $T_\text{N}\approx20$ K. The dominant interaction derived from the Curie-Weiss fitting to the inverse DC susceptibility is antiferromagnetic. Through modelling the INS spectrum with the linear spin wave theory, the magnetic exchange interactions for the nearest intralayer, nearest interlayer, and next nearest interlayer are determined to be $J_1=0.27(3),J_2=0.27(3),$ and $J_3=-0.05(1)$ meV, respectively, and a small value of easy-axis anisotropy of $D_{zz}=-0.01$ meV is introduced. We derive a magnetic phase diagram that reveals that it is the competition between $J_1, J_2$, and $J_3$ that stabilizes the collinear stripe-type antiferromagnetic order., Comment: 10 pages,9 figures

A solid with larger sound speeds exhibits higher lattice thermal conductivity (k_{lat}). Diamond is a prominent instance where its mean sound speed is 14400 m s-1 and k_{lat} is 2300 W m-1 K-1. Here, we report an extreme exception that CuP2 has quite large mean sound speeds of 4155 m s-1, comparable to GaAs, but the single crystals show a very low lattice thermal conductivity of about 4 W m-1 K-1 at room temperature, one order of magnitude smaller than GaAs. To understand such a puzzling thermal transport behavior, we have thoroughly investigated the atomic structure and lattice dynamics by combining neutron scattering techniques with first-principles simulations. Cu atoms form dimers sandwiched in between the layered P atomic networks and the dimers vibrate as a rattling mode with frequency around 11 meV. This mode is manifested to be remarkably anharmonic and strongly scatters acoustic phonons to achieve the low k_{lat}. Such a dimer rattling behavior in layered structures might offer an unprecedented strategy for suppressing thermal conduction without involving atomic disorder., Comment: four figures and one table in the main text

The low-energy magnetic excitation from the highly Ca-doped quasi-one-dimensional magnet SrCa13Cu24O41 was studied in the magnetic ordered state by using inelastic neutron scattering. We observed the gapless spin-wave excitation, dispersive along the a and c axes but nondispersive along the b axis. Such excitations are attributed to the spin wave from the spin-chain sublattice. Model fitting to the experimental data gives the nearest-neighbour interaction Jc as 5.4 meV and the interchain interaction Ja = 4.4 meV. Jc is antiferromagnetic and its value is close to the nearest-neighbour interactions of the similar edge-sharing spin-chain systems such as CuGeO3. Comparing with the hole-doped spin chains in Sr14Cu24O41, which shows a spin gap due to spin dimers formed around Zhang-Rice singlets, the chains in SrCa13Cu24O41 show a gapless excitation in this study. We ascribe such a change from gapped to gapless excitations to holes transferring away from the chain sublattice into the ladder sublattice upon Ca doping.
