1. High-order topological pumping on a superconducting quantum processor

Abstract: High-order topological phases of matter refer to the systems of $n$-dimensional bulk with the topology of $m$-th order, exhibiting $(n-m)$-dimensional boundary modes and can be characterized by topological pumping. Here, we experimentally demonstrate two types of second-order topological pumps, forming four 0-dimensional corner localized states on a 4$\times$4 square lattice array of 16 superconducting qubits. The initial ground state of the system for half-filling, as a product of four identical entangled 4-qubit states, is prepared using an adiabatic scheme. During the pumping procedure, we adiabatically modulate the superlattice Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian by precisely controlling both the hopping strengths and on-site potentials. At the half pumping period, the system evolves to a corner-localized state in a quadrupole configuration. The robustness of the second-order topological pump is also investigated by introducing different on-site disorder. Our work studies the topological properties of high-order topological phases from the dynamical transport picture using superconducting qubits, which would inspire further research on high-order topological phases.

2. Two-level approximation of transmons in quantum quench experiments

Abstract: Quantum quench is a typical protocol in the study of nonequilibrium dynamics of quantum many-body systems. Recently, a number of experiments with superconducting transmon qubits are reported, in which the spin and hard-core boson models with two energy levels on individual sites are used. The transmons are a multilevel system and the coupled qubits are governed by the Bose-Hubbard model. How well they can be approximated by a two-level system has been discussed and analysed in different ways for specific experiments in the literature. Here, we numerically investigate the accuracy and validity of the two-level approximation for the multilevel transmons based on the concept of Loschmidt echo. Using this method, we are able to calculate the fidelity decay (i.e., the time-dependent overlap of evolving wave functions) due to the state leakage to transmon high energy levels. We present the results for different system Hamiltonians with various initial states, qubit coupling strength, and external driving, and for two kinds of quantum quench experiments with time reversal and time evolution in one direction. We show quantitatively the extent to which the fidelity decays with time for changing coupling strength (or on-site interaction over coupling strength) and filled particle number or locations in the initial states under specific system Hamiltonians, which may serve as a way for assessing the two-level approximation of transmons. Finally, we compare our results with the reported experiments using transmon qubits.

Abstract: Operator spreading, often characterized by out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs), is one of the central concepts in quantum many-body physics. However, measuring OTOCs is experimentally challenging due to the requirement of reversing the time evolution of systems. Here we apply Floquet engineering to investigate operator spreading in a superconducting 10-qubit chain. Floquet engineering provides an effective way to tune the coupling strength between nearby qubits, which is used to demonstrate quantum walks with tunable couplings, reversed time evolution, and the measurement of OTOCs. A clear light-cone-like operator propagation is observed in the system with multiple excitations, and has a nearly equal velocity as the single-particle quantum walk. For the butterfly operator that is nonlocal (local) under the Jordan-Wigner transformation, the OTOCs show distinct behaviors with (without) a signature of information scrambling in the near integrable system., Comment: 6+12 pages, 4 figures

5. On the GBM event seen 0.4 sec after GW 150914

Abstract: In view of the recent report by Connaughton we analyse continuous TTE data of Fermi-GBM around the time of the gravitational wave event GW 150914. We find that after proper accounting for low count statistics, the GBM transient event at 0.4 s after GW 150914 is likely not due to an astrophysical source, but consistent with a background fluctuation, removing the tension between the INTEGRAL/ACS non-detection and GBM. Additionally, reanalysis of other short GRBs shows that without proper statistical modeling the fluence of faint events is over-predicted, as verified for some joint GBM-ACS detections of short GRBs. We detail the statistical procedure to correct these biases. Abstract: A gravitational-wave (GW) transient was identified in data recorded by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors on 2015 September 14. The event, initially designated G184098 and later given the name GW150914, is described in detail elsewhere. By prior arrangement, preliminary estimates of the time, significance, and sky location of the event were shared with 63 teams of observers covering radio, optical, near-infrared, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths with ground- and space-based facilities. In this Letter we describe the low-latency analysis of the GW data and present the sky localization of the first observed compact binary merger. We summarize the follow-up observations reported by 25 teams via private Gamma-ray Coordinates Network circulars, giving an overview of the participating facilities, the GW sky localization coverage, the timeline and depth of the observations. As this event turned out to be a binary black hole merger, there is little expectation of a detectable electromagnetic (EM) signature. Nevertheless, this first broadband campaign to search for a counterpart of an Advanced LIGO source represents a milestone and highlights the broad capabilities of the transient astronomy community and the observing strategies that have been developed to pursue neutron star binary merger events. Abstract: The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) has detected over 1400 Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) since it began science operations in July, 2008. We use a subset of over 300 GRBs localized by instruments such as Swift, the Fermi Large Area Telescope, INTEGRAL, and MAXI, or through triangulations from the InterPlanetary Network (IPN), to analyze the accuracy of GBM GRB localizations. We find that the reported statistical uncertainties on GBM localizations, which can be as small as 1 degree, underestimate the distance of the GBM positions to the true GRB locations and we attribute this to systematic uncertainties. The distribution of systematic uncertainties is well represented (68% confidence level) by a 3.7 degree Gaussian with a non-Gaussian tail that contains about 10% of GBM-detected GRBs and extends to approximately 14 degrees. A more complex model suggests that there is a dependence of the systematic uncertainty on the position of the GRB in spacecraft coordinates, with GRBs in the quadrants on the Y-axis better localized than those on the X-axis., Comment: accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series

Abstract: Prompt or early optical emission in gamma-ray bursts is notoriously difficult to measure, and observations of the dozen cases show a large variety of properties. Yet, such early emission promises to help us achieve a better understanding of the GRB emission process(es). We performed dedicated observations of the ultra-long duration (T90 about 7000 s) GRB 130925A in the optical/near-infrared with the 7-channel "Gamma-Ray Burst Optical and Near-infrared Detector" (GROND) at the 2.2m MPG/ESO telescope. We detect an optical/NIR flare with an amplitude of nearly 2 mag which is delayed with respect to the keV--MeV prompt emission by about 300--400 s. The decay time of this flare is shorter than the duration of the flare (500 s) or its delay. While we cannot offer a straightforward explanation, we discuss the implications of the flare properties and suggest ways toward understanding it., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publ. in A&A

Abstract: Since the advent of the Swift satellite it has been possible to obtain precise localisations of GRB positions of sub-arcsec accuracy within seconds, facilitating ground-based robotic telescopes to automatically slew to the target within seconds. This has yielded a plethora of observational data for the afterglow phase of the GRB, but the quantity of data (<2 keV) covering the initial prompt emission still remains small. Only in a handful of cases has it been possible obtain simultaneous coverage of the prompt emission in a multi-wavelength regime (gamma-ray to optical), as a result of: observing the field by chance prior to the GRB (e.g. 080319B/naked-eye burst), long-prompt emission (e.g., 080928, 110205A) or triggered on a pre-cursor (e.g., 041219A, 050820A, 061121). This small selection of bursts have shown both correlated and uncorrelated gamma-ray and optical light curve behaviour, and the multi-wavelength emission mechanism remains far from resolved (i.e. single population synchrotron self-Component, electron distributions, additional neutron components or residual collisions). Such multi-wavelength observations during the GRB prompt phase are pivotal in providing further insight on the poorly understood prompt emission mechanism. We add to this small sample the Swift burst 121217A that had two distinct periods of prompt emission separated by ~700 s, observed by Swift/BAT, Swift/XRT and Fermi/GBM. As a result of the time delay of the second emission, it enabled optical imaging (from 3 to 7 bands) to be taken with the GROND instrument to a resolution as fine as 10s. Abstract: The mechanism that causes the prompt-emission episode of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is still widely debated despite there being thousands of prompt detections. The favoured internal shock model relates this emission to synchrotron radiation. However, it does not always explain the spectral indices of the shape of the spectrum, often fit with empirical functions. Multi-wavelength observations are therefore required to help investigate the possible underlying mechanisms that causes the prompt emission. We present GRB 121217A, for which we were able to observe its near-infrared (NIR) emission during a secondary prompt-emission episode with the Gamma-Ray Burst Optical Near-infrared Detector (GROND) in combination with the Swift and Fermi satellites, covering an energy range of 0.001 keV to 100 keV. We determine a photometric redshift of z=3.1+/-0.1 with a line-of-sight extinction of A_V~0 mag, utilising the optical/NIR SED. From the afterglow, we determine a bulk Lorentz factor of Gamma~250 and an emission radius of R<10^18 cm. The prompt-emission broadband spectral energy distribution is well fit with a broken power law with b1=-0.3+/-0.1, b2=0.6+/-0.1 that has a break at E=6.6+/-0.9 keV, which can be interpreted as the maximum injection frequency. Self-absorption by the electron population below energies of E_a<6 keV suggest a magnetic field strength of B~10^5 G. However, all the best fit models underpredict the flux observed in the NIR wavelengths, which also only rebrightens by a factor of ~2 during the second prompt emission episode, in stark contrast to the X-ray emission, which rebrightens by a factor of ~100, suggesting an afterglow component is dominating the emission. Abstract: Atomic layer deposition (ALD) provides a promising approach for deposition of ultrathin low-defect-density tunnel barriers, and it has been implemented in a high-vacuum magnetron sputtering system for in situ deposition of ALD-Al2O3 tunnel barriers in superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) Josephson junctions. A smooth ALD-Al2O3 barrier layer was grown on a Al-wetted Nb bottom electrode and was followed with a top Nb electrode growth using sputtering. Preliminary low temperature measurements of current-voltage characteristics (IVC) of the Josephson junctions made from these trilayers confirmed the integrity of the ALD-Al2O3 barrier layer. Abstract: The properties of phase escape in a dc SQUID at 25 mK, which is well below quantum-to-classical crossover temperature $T_{cr}$, in the presence of strong resonant ac driving have been investigated. The SQUID contains two Nb/Al-AlO$_{x} $/Nb tunnel junctions with Josephson inductance much larger than the loop inductance so it can be viewed as a single junction having adjustable critical current. We find that with increasing microwave power $W$ and at certain frequencies $\nu $ and $\nu $/2, the single primary peak in the switching current distribution, \textrm{which is the result of macroscopic quantum tunneling of the phase across the junction}, first shifts toward lower bias current $I$ and then a resonant peak develops. These results are explained by quantum resonant phase escape involving single and two photons with microwave-suppressed potential barrier. As $W$ further increases, the primary peak gradually disappears and the resonant peak grows into a single one while shifting further to lower $I$. At certain $W$, a second resonant peak appears, which can locate at very low $I$ depending on the value of $\nu $. Analysis based on the classical equation of motion shows that such resonant peak can arise from the resonant escape of the phase particle with extremely large oscillation amplitude resulting from bifurcation of the nonlinear system. Our experimental result and theoretical analysis demonstrate that at $T\ll T_{cr}$, escape of the phase particle could be dominated by classical process, such as dynamical bifurcation of nonlinear systems under strong ac driving., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, 1 table

22. The Fermi-GBM Gamma-Ray Burst Catalogs: The First Six Years

Abstract: Since its launch in 2008, the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) has triggered and located on average approximately two gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) every three days. Here we present the main results from the latest two catalogs provided by the Fermi-GBM science team, namely the third GBM GRB catalog [1] and the first GBM time-resolved spectral catalog [2]. The intention of the GBM GRB catalog is to provide information to the community on the most important observables of the GBM detected bursts. It comprises 1405 triggers identified as GRBs. For each one, location and main characteristics of the prompt emission, the duration, the peak flux and the fluence are derived. The GBM time-resolved spectral catalog presents high-quality time-resolved spectral analysis with high temporal and spectral resolution of the brightest bursts observed by Fermi GBM in a shorter period than the former catalog, namely four years. It comprises 1491 spectra from 81 bursts. Distributions of parameters, statistics of the parameter populations, parameter-parameter and parameter-uncertainty correlations, and their exact values are obtained.

Self-absorption by the electron population below energies of Ea < 6 keV suggest a magnetic field strength of B approx. 10(exp 5) G. However, all the best fit models underpredict the flux observed in the NIR wavelengths, which also only rebrightens by a factor of approx. 2 during the second prompt emission episode, in stark contrast to the X-ray emission, which rebrightens by a factor of approx. 100. This suggests an afterglow component is dominating the emission. We present GRB 121217A, one of the few GRBs that has multi-wavelength observations of the prompt-emission period and shows that it can be understood with a synchrotron radiation model. However, due to the complexity of the GRB's emission, other mechanisms that result in Band-like spectra cannot be ruled out.

Abstract: Rapid urbanization has changed urban ecological environments and affected local biodiversity. An analysis of the existing literature examining changes in urban biodiversity may help with urban planning and biodiversity conservation. The present paper analysed the dynamic change of plant diversity in Hangzhou over the past four decades of rapid urbanization. It was found that although the number of plant species increased from 1,565 in 1981 to 1,799 in 2020, 101 plant species were lost. At the same time, 18 invasive species of plants and 52 ornamental plant species were acquired, with the largest increase observed in perennial herbs as a result of urban greening. A comparison of the respective Ellenberg’s Indicator Values (EIV) of lost and acquired species reveals a larger increase in the number of species for sun plants than for shade plants. The latter did not increase with the rapid increase in urban green areas. A significant increase in the number of thermophilous plant species was observed, which is closely related to global warming and the heat island effect in cities. The number of aquatic plants also increased due to urban wetland landscaping. Prioritizing land conservation in urban planning is more conducive to producing and maintaining stable urban ecosystems and practicing sustainable urban development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As to the inspection test, it is not perfect, so there are two types of errors (Types I and II). Nevertheless, compared with inspection test, burn-in is usually costly. Hence, how to make a suitable trade-off between these three treatments (i.e., inspection schedule, inspection test, and burn-in test) such that the outgoing batch satisfies the purchaser's quality requirement with low cost is an important issue. The main purpose of this paper is to deal with the problem of determining the optimal inspection schedule and the optimal mixed policy of inspection and burn-in, where the average outgoing quality is used as the measure of quality. More specifically, by using the criterion of maximizing the expected profit that the vendor makes in a trade, a nonlinear programming problem is built to determine (a) the number of inspections undertaken in the production process, (b) the times at which the production process is inspected, (c) the total number of items that the vendor should produce (or the production run time), (d) the number of items for inspection, the number of items for burn-in, and the number of items that need neither inspection or burn-in, and (e) the optimal burn-in time for those needing burn-in testing. Abstract: International audience; In view of the recent report by Connaughton et al., we analyze continuous time-tagged event (TTE) data of Fermi-gamma-ray burst monitor (GBM) around the time of the gravitational-wave event GW 150914. We find that after proper accounting for low-count statistics, the GBM transient event at 0.4 s after GW 150914 is likely not due to an astrophysical source, but consistent with a background fluctuation, removing the tension between the INTEGRAL/ACS non-detection and GBM. Additionally, reanalysis of other short GRBs shows that without proper statistical modeling the fluence of faint events is over-predicted, as verified for some joint GBM–ACS detections of short GRBs. We detail the statistical procedure to correct these biases. As a result, faint short GRBs, verified by ACS detections, with significances in the broadband light curve even smaller than that of the GBM–GW150914 event are recovered as proper non-zero source, while the GBM–GW150914 event is consistent with zero fluence.

Abstract: Science 343(6166), 51 - 54(2014). doi:10.1126/science.1242302, Gamma-ray burst (GRB) 130427A is one of the most energetic GRBs ever observed. The initial pulse up to 2.5 seconds is possibly the brightest well-isolated pulse observed to date. A fine time resolution spectral analysis shows power-law decays of the peak energy from the onset of the pulse, consistent with models of internal synchrotron shock pulses. However, a strongly correlated power-law behavior is observed between the luminosity and the spectral peak energy that is inconsistent with curvature effects arising in the relativistic outflow. Abstract: Towards spaceborne spotlight SAR, the antenna is regulated by the SAR system with specific regularity, so the shaking of the internal mechanism is inevitable. Moreover, external environment also has an effect on the stability of SAR platform. Both of them will cause the jitter of the SAR platform attitude. The platform attitude instability will introduce antenna pointing error on both the azimuth and range directions, and influence the acquisition of SAR original data and ultimate imaging quality. In this paper, the relations between the antenna pointing errors and the three-axis attitude errors are deduced, then the relations between spaceborne spotlight SAR imaging of the point target and antenna pointing errors are analysed based on the paired echo theory, meanwhile, the change of the azimuth antenna gain is considered as the spotlight SAR platform moves ahead. The simulation experiments manifest the effects on spotlight SAR imaging caused by antenna pointing errors are related to the target location, that is, the pointing errors of the antenna beam will severely influence the area far away from the scene centre of azimuth direction in the illuminated scene.
