Edge detection is one of the fundamental computer vision tasks. Recent methods for edge detection based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) typically employ the weighted cross-entropy loss. Their predicted results being thick and needing post-processing before calculating the optimal dataset scale (ODS) F-measure for evaluation. To achieve end-to-end training, we propose a non-maximum suppression layer (NMS) to obtain sharp boundaries without the need for post-processing. The ODS F-measure can be calculated based on these sharp boundaries. So, the ODS F-measure loss function is proposed to train the network. Besides, we propose an adaptive multi-level feature pyramid network (AFPN) to better fuse different levels of features. Furthermore, to enrich multi-scale features learned by AFPN, we introduce a pyramid context module (PCM) that includes dilated convolution to extract multi-scale features. Experimental results indicate that the proposed AFPN achieves state-of-the-art performance on the BSDS500 dataset (ODS F-score of 0.837) and the NYUDv2 dataset (ODS F-score of 0.780). OBJECTIVE: To prospectively evaluate the association between modifiable lifestyle factors and peripheral artery disease (PAD) among individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We included 14,543 individuals with T2D from the UK Biobank. We defined a weighted healthy lifestyle score using nonsmoking, regular physical activity, high-quality diet, moderate alcohol consumption, optimal waist-to-hip ratio, and adequate sleep duration, and categorized into unfavorable, intermediate, and favorable lifestyles. We created a genetic risk score (GRS) using 19 single nucleotide polymorphisms previously found to be associated with PAD. We modeled the association between lifestyle score and PAD, overall and stratified by PAD genetic susceptibility. RESULTS: After a median 13.5 years of follow-up, 628 incident cases of PAD were documented. A linear inverse association between the weighted lifestyle score and PAD was observed, with a hazard ratio (HR) (95% CI) of 0.27 (0.19, 0.38) for favorable compared with unfavorable lifestyle (Ptrend < 0.0001). An estimated 58.3% (45.0%, 69.1%) of PAD in this population could be potentially avoidable if all participants attained a favorable lifestyle. Moreover, the PAD GRS was associated with increased PAD risk (HR [95% CI] per SD increment: 1.13 [1.03, 1.23]). A favorable lifestyle was able to partially mitigate the excess risk of PAD associated with higher GRS, albeit as a nonsignificant interaction. Several biomarkers in the lipid metabolism, hepatic/renal function, and systemic inflammation pathways collectively explained 13.3% (8.5%, 20.1%) of the association between weighted lifestyle score and PAD. CONCLUSIONS: A favorable lifestyle was associated with lower risk of PAD among individuals with T2D, independent of genetic predisposition to PAD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a fast algorithm for texture-less object recognition, which is designed to be robust to cluttered backgrounds and small transformations. At its core, the proposed method demonstrates a two-stage template-based procedure using an orientation compressing map and discriminative regional weight (OCM-DRW) to effectively detect texture-less objects. In the first stage, the proposed method quantizes and compresses all the orientations in a neighborhood to obtain the orientation compressing map which then is used to generate a set of possible object locations. To recognize the object in these possible object locations, the second stage computes the similarity of each possible object location with the learned template by using discriminative regional weight, which can effectively distinguish different categories of objects with similar parts. Experiments on publiclyavailable, texture-less object datasets indicate that apart from yielding efficient computational performance, the proposed method also attained remarkable recognition rates surpassing recent state-of-the-art texture-less object detectors in the presence of high-clutter, occlusion and scale-rotation changes. To evaluate the immunogenicity and safety of an anti-rabies monoclonal antibody (mAb), ormutivimab, compared with human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG). This phase III trial was designed as a randomized, double-blind, non-inferiority clinical trial in patients aged ≥18 years with suspected World Health Organization category Ⅲ rabies exposure. The participants were randomized 1:1 to ormutivimab and HRIG groups. After thorough wound washing and injection of ormutivimab/HRIG on day 0, the vaccination was administered on days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28. The primary endpoint was the adjusted geometric mean concentration (GMC) of rabies virus-neutralizing activity (RVNA) on day 7. The endpoint of safety included the occurrence of adverse reactions and serious adverse events. A total of 720 participants were recruited. The adjusted-GMC of RVNA (0.41 IU/ml) on day 7 in ormutivimab group was not inferior to that in the HRIG group (0.41 IU/ml), with ratio of adjusted-GMC of 1.01 (95% confidence interval: 0.91, 1.14). The seroconversion rate of the ormutivimab group was higher than that of the HRIG group on days 7, 14, and 42. A mathematical model to study the hybrid heating system has been developed and the results have been validated by conducting an experimental study at a building located in Qinghai province. The influence of the different solar thermal collector areas, insulation levels of wall, thermal sensation of the system and different operation strategies have been investigated. It has been observed that the indoor temperature can be improved by up to 6°C when the ambient temperature is −7.8°C (average). By changing the solar collector area from 4 m2 to 8 m2, the kang surface average temperature can be improved from 22°C to 31°C. Solar heating should be recommended strongly for domestic buildings in the Qinghai–Tibetan plateau due to the area's high intensity radiation. In this paper, a novel hybrid solar heating system is presented, that includes a solar kang system, a Trombe wall and a direct gain window. The effects of five combined solar heating operation modes on the indoor hourly temperature for one case domestic building located in the Qinghai–Tibetan plateau were investigated by field measurement and numerical simulation. The optimal operation mode for improving the indoor thermal environment was determined. Furthermore, the effectiveness of each operational mode on the east room was quantitatively evaluated and ranked. The results show that the numerical simulation and field experimental results were well agreed, although there were some differences in specific values. In addition, the results it indicated that a solar kang running all days and Trombe wall running daytime played a significant role in improving the indoor thermal temperature. These relevant findings could provide a reference for solar heating system design and indoor thermal comfort improvement for rural domestic buildings in the Qinghai–Tibetan plateau. To meet the heating demand in north China and reduce the pollution of traditional Chinese kang, a novel combined heating system consists of solar kang system and solar air heating system is proposed. The solar air system is built for the residents’ daily heating demand. The solar kang system can store the solar energy collected in the daytime and provide a good sleeping environment at night. In this study, demonstration buildings are built in Huzhu, Qinghai province and one of them is chosen to test its thermal performance. Three different operation modes: only the solar air system works, only the solar kang system works and the whole combined system works are tested. A mathematic model of the room and combined system is built based on the demonstrating building. Output simulation results are compared with experiment data. The result shows the combined system can rise the indoor air temperature significantly and the simulation result can fit the experiment well. The indoor air temperature can keep about 18 °C when the ambient average temperature is 5 °C. Kang surface temperature can keep above 26 °C during the night at the same condition. This paper presents an efficient edge-based bilateral filter for real noisy image restoration. By dividing all pixels of a noisy image into edge region or non-edge region, the different strategies and parameters are adopted in the edgebased bilateral filter to balance the conservation of image features and the reduction of noise level. Extensive experimental results are shown that this filter achieves very competitive performance in restoring real noisy images, compared with other state-of-the-art denoising algorithm. Building integrated concentrating photovoltaic window (BICPVW) has been proven to be used in sustainable building transparent envelopes. Unfortunately, the balance between optical and electrical properties is difficult. This paper proposes a building integrated concentrating photovoltaic window coupling luminescent solar concentrator and thermotropic material (LT-BICPVW). The luminescent solar concentrator and thermotropic layer were fabricated by bulk polymerization and glass sandwich structure, respectively. Optical models are built based on the optical properties of optical waveguide and thermotropic layer, and optical simulations are performed with Monte Carlo ray tracing technology. Window prototypes are characterized under controlled indoor experimental conditions. The experiment found that as the temperature of the thermotropic film increased from 30 °C to 42 °C, the solar transmittance of LT-BICPVW decreased by 43.3%, and the maximum output power increased by 25%. Compared with, building integrated concentrating photovoltaic window coupled with thermotropic material (T-BICPVW), the power conversion efficiency was improved by 59% at the termination temperature. The LT-BICPVW system can effectively reduce solar heat gain and avoid glare hazards, while using renewable energy to significantly increase power output. Employment of noncovalent bonds as reversible crosslinks have been applied in weldable and self-healing crosslinked polymer networks but result in limited mechanical properties. Herein, a robust, tunable, and fast healable poly(urethane-urea)-GMA (PG) elastomer with a combination of multiple hydrogen bonds and dynamic covalent urea bonds was designed via a photo-induced copolymerization. The resultant PG60 exhibited a tensile strength of 12.3 MPa, an elongation at break of 229%, a toughness of 16.08 MJ m−3, and a self-healing efficiency of 100.0%. By adjusting the content of dynamic crosslinkers, the mechanical strength and self-healability of the resulting elastomers can be optimized. The exceptional properties of the networks, including self-healing capability and remarkable robust mechanical behavior, are attributed to the presence of reversibly noncovalent hydrogen bonds and dynamically covalent urea bonds, which have been confirmed through stress relaxation tests. More importantly, this study not only presents a facile fabrication method for designing mechanically robust and fast self-healing crosslinked elastomers, but also shows great potential in smart humidity sensor. • A new beehive system integrated with solar thermal/PV system was introduced. • Field comparison experiment of solar beehive and traditional beehive. • Solar beehive was more conducive to the survival of bees and the quality of honey. • The honey Baume degree in solar beehive was higher than that in traditional beehive. Bees not only produce honey but also provide the main pollination for most crops, while long maturation cycle, low yield of honey and even mass death of bees are observed in traditional hives due to the unfriendly internal thermal condition. In the present paper, a new beehive system integrated with solar thermal/PV system was introduced to optimize the internal thermal condition of the beehive and then to improve the yield and quality of honey. A local bee farm was selected to evaluate the operating performance of the solar beehive in a real natural environment. Comparative filed testing of the solar hive and traditional hive were carried out under different operating modes depending on the weather conditions all the year round. The variation of hive temperature, the quantity of honey collected, Baume degree and the amount of sugar feed consumption were measured and analyzed. The results showed that the air temperature in solar beehive was higher than that in traditional beehive in winter and transition seasons and lower in summer. The quantity of collected honey in the solar beehive was 15.8% more than that in the traditional beehive. The Baume degree indicated that honey can mature 2 days earlier in solar beehive. As to sugar feed consumption in winter, the corresponding quality in solar beehive was lower than that in traditional hive. Transient luminescent dynamics in low doped porphyrin side-chain polymer film, poly(porphyrin acrylate-styrene) (P[(por)A-S]), were measured by using time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopic technology. At relative higher intrachain porphyrin comonomer concentration (0.27%), the transient luminescence relaxation becomes more rapid with the increase in the interchain polymer concentration, resulting in low luminescence efficiency. The origin has been analyzed according to the Förster-type bimolecular annihilation theory. However, at the porphyrin comonomer concentration (0.1%), the luminescence relaxation of the P[(por)A-S] film becomes faster with the decrease in the interchain polymer concentration, inducing lower luminescence efficiency. The luminescence quenching has been analyzed according to the theory of MM+ force field and exciton rotational diffusion. The theoretical analyses are in good agreement with the experimental results. Energy poverty refers to a situation that people cannot access and use energy safely. It is a major challenge for the global energy system because of its negative impacts on household income, health, education, gender equality and environmental conditions. To solve this problem, many countries advocate the development and promotion of passive solar technology, but the effectiveness of them for energy poverty mitigation has not been evidenced. Therefore, based on empirical studies in the rural areas of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, this paper aims at investigating the effectiveness of passive solar heating renovation to alleviate energy poverty in rural plateau areas. Specifically, this paper compared and analyzed the coal consumption and indoor air quality during the heating period before and after the renovation of a single-storey building. Further, based on the IES-VE numerical simulation, this paper analyzed the impact of building envelope structure performance on indoor air temperature. The results show that after building renovation, the coal consumption during the heating period could be reduced by 97 kg/week, while the indoor average temperature of two bedrooms were increased by 4.8 °C and 1.7 °C respectively. Setting up the coal stove as an auxiliary heating device, can alleviate the defects of insufficient heating of passive solar energy technology, and indoor temperature could be further improved. However, indoor air quality was lowered because of the high PM 2.5 concentration. In contrast, improving envelope performance could further improve the average temperature of two bedrooms and the sunspace to 16.7 °C, 15.9 °C and 15.6 °C, meeting the requirements of indoor space heating. In general, passive solar heating could achieve satisfactory results, but to alleviate energy poverty effectively in rural plateau areas, further attention should be paid to other technical, economic, social and policy issues. Abstract Energy poverty is prominent in rural Qinghai-Tibet region, China. In sacrifice of thermal comfort and health, residents adaptively choose the biomass fuels and cheap coal for heating and cooking, as an approach to energy expenditure reduction. Considering renewable energy utilization is effective to replace the utilization of conventional fuel, this paper aims to examine the potential of using solar house for energy poverty alleviation. Based on a novel hybrid heating system, we renovated a rural building into a solar house in Wangtun village, Qinghai-Tibet region. The energy consumption and indoor air temperature of the building before and after reconstruction were field measured and comparatively analysed. Results indicate that the energy consumed by solar house with the hybrid heating system was 153.3 kWh/day lower than that by the old building. The average air temperature of the living room and two bedrooms in the solar house reached 12.8°C, 11.0°C and 10.2°C, about 8.78°C, 7.61°C and 6.82°C higher than temperatures of the rooms in the old building. Overall, the solar house has considerably improved indoor environments and provided people with better thermal comfort. It is concluded that solar house can be an effective approach to mitigate domestic energy poverty of the rural Qinghai-Tibet region. How to design water-in-glass evacuated tube solar water heater (WGET-SWH) with high heat collection rates has long been a question. Here, we propose a high-throughput screening (HTS) method based on machine learning to design and screen 3.538125 × 10 8 possible combinations of extrinsic properties of WGET-SWH, to discover promising WGET-SWHs by comparing their predicted heat collection rates. Two new-designed WGET-SWHs were installed experimentally and showed higher heat collection rates (11.32 and 11.44 MJ/m 2 , respectively) than all the 915 measured samples in our previous database. This study shows that we can use the HTS method to modify the design of WGET-SWH with just few knowledge about the highly complicated correlations between the extrinsic properties and heat collection rates of solar water heaters. Aims: To quantify associations of different metrics of long-term glycemic variability (GV) with multiple adverse diabetes-related outcomes.Methods: We searched PubMed and Embase from database inception to 23 August 2021. GV was based on measurements of HbA1c or fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and calculated by standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variance (CV) or other metrics. Outcomes included mortality, cardiovascular disease (CVD), renal disease, peripheral neuropathy, retinopathy, dementia and cancer. Random-effects meta-analyses were adopted to pool the relative risks (RRs).Results: Seventy-five articles with 2,051,701 participants were included. When comparing top with bottom quartiles, HbA1c variabilities were associated with all-cause mortality (RRCV = 1.63, 95 % CI 1.37-1.92; RRSD = 1.87, 1.55-2.26), CVD (RRCV = 1.38, 1.07-1.78; RRSD = 1.34, 1.12-1.59), renal disease (RRCV = 1.43, 1.18-1.74; RRSD = 1.44, 1.24-1.67), and peripheral neuropathy (RRCV = 1.84, 1.40-2.43; RRSD = 1.98, 1.51-2.61), but not retinopathy. FPG variabilities were associated with all-cause mortality (RRCV = 1.59, 1.43-1.78; RRSD = 1.67, 1.26-2.20), renal disease (RRCV = 1.77, 1.32-2.38), and retinopathy (RRCV = 1.92, 1.10-3.35), but not CVD and peripheral neuropathy. Associations of GV with Alzheimer's disease (RRHbA1c-CV = 1.38, 1.13-1.70; RRFPG-CV = 1.32, 1.07-1.63) and cancer (RRHbA1c-SD = 2.19, 1.52-3.17; RRFPG-CV = 3.64, 2.21-5.98) were each found significant in one study.Conclusions: Long-term GV was associated with multiple adverse diabetes-related outcomes, while the strength of associations varied. The comprehensive utilization of photovoltaic and solar-thermal (PVT) is an important approach to achieve the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, and can realize the generation of electricity and thermal energy cleanly and efficiently. In order to satisfy the basic living demands including electricity, space heating and domestic hot water of Chinese rural residents, a large scale direct expansion PVT heat pump (DX-PVT-HP) system used plate-tube evaporator has been proposed in the present paper. An experimental platform with a solar panel installation area of 32.47 m2 is installed on the roof of a dormitory in Hefei, and its operation characteristics including electricity and thermal performance are field tested and analyzed in winter. The data indicates that during the operation of the heat pump, the cooling effect of the plate-tube evaporator on the solar panel can maximum increase the photoelectric conversion efficiency by 25.0% in comparison with that of the conventional solar panel. In the process of heating 1500 L water from 5.5 °C to 45 °C on a sunny day, the average coefficient of performance (COP) of the system reaches 4.96, and the power generation of the system is greater than the power consumption. Finally, the concept of equivalent net thermal energy is proposed to unify the output of electricity and thermal energy to evaluate the comprehensive performance of the system. Chinese Kang is widely used as heated bed and for heat recovery of cooking stove in Northern China. However there are main drawbacks of indoor and outdoor air pollutant generation and heavy demands on solid fuel handling. A novel combined Kang system, which integrates solar Kang and solar air collector, is here proposed. Experiments were conducted to examine the alternative operating modes: (i) only solar air collector in service, (ii) only solar Kang in service, and (iii) both solar Kang and solar air collector in service. The results show that these three modes behave differently and have distinct effects on room thermal environment in winter. When this pollution-free system operates under the third combined mode, the room temperature increases significantly and the vertical temperature gradient reduces. The Kang surface temperature increases and its uniformity is improved. It is also found that the room air temperature is closely related to the Kang surface temperature. Furthermore, most of the time the thermal environment meets the occupant need. An improved Trombe wall is proposed to adapt to building construction with selective thermo-insulation façades (internal and cavity wall insulation, but not external wall insulation system). The case study is conducted in Xining, Capital city of Qinghai province in China, where the general building façades are mostly selective thermo-insulation façades to fight against the severe cold. A numerical analysis is undertaken to show the effects on the improvement of the building's thermal environment by comparing the improved Trombe wall system with the classical Trombe wall system. The operating efficiency of the improved Trombe wall can be up to 33.85%, an increase of 56%. The present work investigated a solar assisted heat pump system for drying Chinese wolfberry. The kinetic characteristic was firstly analyzed through a series of lab experiments. It was concluded that the Page model was the most suitable for predicting the heat and mass transfer of the wolfberry. Based on the wolfberry kinetic model, solar collector model and chamber air model, the coupled drying system model was developed. The accuracy of the mathematic model was determined through comparing with the preliminary experimental results. The influence of operating conditions on the thermal and energy performance of the dryer for the different operating mode was discussed. The drying weight of no more than 75 kg may be preferable in the stand-alone solar drying mode, and less than 15 h was needed to be dried. The electric energy consumption in the solar assisted the heat pump drying mode was lower than that in the stand-alone heat pump mode, and it was recommended that about 50 kg of wolfberry to be dried in the solar assisted heat pump system. Compared to the autumn drying, the reduction in the electric energy consumption was around 9.1 kWh during the 11 h summer drying process. The obtained results demonstrated the feasibility of the combined system for drying wolfberry, and also can provide the basic theoretical and experimental data support for the following research. To promote the application of renewable energy in low-energy buildings in Alpine regions, a solar-air source heat pump (SASHP) system was investigated based on a low-energy residential building in Xining City. First, a solar fresh air (SFA) heating system simulation model was established in TRNSYS software, and the reliability of the model was verified with measured values. In addition, based on the SFA heating system model, a SASHP system model was further realized. The operating characteristics of the SASHP system were explored in depth and compared with those of the single-ASHP system in the heating season. The results show that the SFA heating system model is reliable, with relative errors that can be controlled within 15%. The indoor average temperature (T ave) can be maintained from 16.13 to 19.61 °C. The SASHP system can leads to T ave fluctuations within the range of 21.4–22.9 °C, and the solar fraction can reach 55% in the heating season. Furthermore, the SASHP system can reduce energy consumption by 55.38% compared to the ASHP system; additionally, the COP of the SASHP system is 109.43% higher than that of the ASHP system, and the annual cost is 9.7% lower. Moreover, the SASHP system produces 55.48% less carbon emissions than the ASHP system. These results provide guidance for the application of SASHP systems in Alpine regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• A combined hydrothermal alkaline pretreatment method was optimized in this work. • The combined pretreatment method was helpful in shortening retention time. • Biogas yield was significantly improved under 175℃ hydrothermal +8% NaOH pretreatment condition. • Lignin removal caused by Alkali addition was the main reason in shortening digestion time and increasing methane yield. To alleviate the energy shortage and greenhouse effect, lignocellulosic biomass has received great attention for its sufficient produced in China rural areas. Miscanthus is a kind of effective energy crop for methane production due to its high organic content and biomass yield. While pretreatment is necessary before anaerobic digestion to improve the biodegradability of feedstock. A combination of hydrothermal and alkaline pretreatments was applied to reduce the recalcitrance of Miscanthus in this paper, and the results showed that the digestion performance was much better than single hydrothermally pretreated material. An 8% NaOH dosage at 175 °C was the best pretreatment condition and resulted in a 56.92% increase in biogas yield and a 45.4% reduction in digestion time compared to the control. Lignin was dissolved during hydrothermal alkaline pretreatment in a short retention time, causing destroyed structure of lignocellulose and high content of cellulose and hemicellulose maintaining. Delignification was examined an important factor for methane yield enhancing. Biodegradability, as measured by enzymatic hydrolysis, was markedly promoted. In order to better release the heat generated by the electronic components, a novel heat dissipation system is proposed, which combines a microchannel heat pipe (MHP) with a high thermal conductivity and a radiative plate with a high emissivity at nighttime. First, a simple testing rig was made with an MHP and a radiative plate, where the radiative plate was made of acrylic resin, a curing agent, thinner, and aluminum plate, and had strong radiative cooling at nighttime. Second, the mathematical model was initially established and verified using experiments, where it was shown that the agreement between numerical and experimental data was well within experimental uncertainties. Comprehensive simulation investigations were conducted by varying wind speed, relative humidity, the cloudiness coefficient, dimension of the radiative plate, and tilted angle. The results show that: (1) the emissivity of the radiative plate was about 0.311 in the daytime and about 0.908 in the nighttime; (2) the influence of wind speed on reducing the component surface temperature was greater than the cloudiness coefficient and relative humidity; (3) the width of the radiative plate had a greater effect on heat dissipation than on its length, and the maximum size of radiative plate was recommended to be 400 mm × 400–500 mm (length × width), which was equipped with a single MHP (width: 60 mm). Additionally, the tilted angle of the radiative plate should be kept within 30° of the horizontal level.
