38. Physicochemical and sensory acceptance of functional beverages from Ginkgo bilobaseed extracts

Abstract

Ginkgo bilobaseeds are rich in nutrients and functional ingredients; however, the slow progress of research into processing and utilization has caused considerable waste. This research describes the enrichment of the functional ingredients used to prepare Ginkgo bilobaseed extracts (GBSE) and aimed to develop a functional beverage formulated from GBSE and orange juice. The changes in the quality and antioxidant capacity of the formulated beverages during 120 days of storage were also investigated. The formulated beverages had good color and sensory acceptance. The addition of GBSE increased the content of vitamin C, the total phenolic content, and the antioxidant activities (DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP) of the formulated beverages. When 2% GBSE was added, the aforementioned indicators of the formulated beverage were the highest, at 90.43 mg/L, 46.62 mg/mL, 145.88 μmol TE/L, 637.41 μmol TE/L, and 2789.02 μmol TE/L, respectively. During storage, the color of the formulated beverage was stable and the titratable acid content significantly increased (from 1.34 to 2.32%). Vitamin C content and total phenolic content in the formulated beverages (2% GBSE) decreased from 90.43 to 36.22 mg/L and 46.62 to 34.05 mg/mL, respectively. As expected, the antioxidant activity decreased after 120 days of storage. The principal component analysis showed that the quality of the formulated beverage was stable during the entire storage period with the addition of 0.5% and 1% GBSE. These results indicate that the beverage formulated with GBSE had better sensory acceptance, functional ingredients, and antioxidant capacities after 120 days of storage.

39. Colors, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant capacity of Ginkgo bilobaseeds affected by drying conditions

Abstract

Drying is an important pre-processing step in the application of Ginkgo bilobaseeds powders in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Herein, the effects of sun drying (SD), freeze drying (FD), hot-air drying (HD) and vacuum drying (VD) with different temperature (50 °C, 60 °C, and 70 °C) on the color, proteins, key functional compounds (vitamin C and total flavonoids), and antioxidant properties of G. bilobaseeds were investigated. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to analyze the differences in dried G. bilobaseeds under different drying conditions and temperatures based on the above indexes. The effects of different drying methods on the quality of G. bilobaseeds are as follows: SD > HD > VD > FD. PCA revealed that drying methods, time, and temperature have significant effects on the quality of G. bilobaseeds After FD treatment, G. bilobaseeds powders showed brighter color, highest protein (12.03 g/100 g), vitamin C (500.11 µg/g), and total flavonoid (2.33 mg/g) content; and highest antioxidant capacity. VD treatment at different temperatures preserve 84.11–86.63%, 77.95–86.98% and 79.83–87.12% of protein, vitamin C, and total flavonoid in dried G. bilobaseeds compared to FD treatment. Higher antioxidant capacity of dried G. bilobaseeds was also found in VD treatments compared to SD and HD. The application of VD treatment is beneficial to save costs and obtain high-quality G. bilobaseeds compared to FD treatment.

40. Preparation of Fe3O4@C@TiO2 and its application for oxytetracycline hydrochloride adsorption.

Abstract

The magnetic Fe3O4@C@TiO2 microspheres with multilevel yolk–shell structure were successfully prepared by combining sol–gel and simple hydrothermal methods. The features of the as-obtained Fe3O4@C@TiO2 microspheres were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption–desorption measurements and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Fe3O4@C@TiO2 was used as an adsorbent to explore its adsorption properties of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC-HCl) by changing initial concentration and time. The results suggest that the maximum adsorption of Fe3O4@C@TiO2 is 87.3 mg·g−1, and the time reaching the absorption equilibrium is 60 min. Langmuir model fits to data better than the Freundlich model, and the kinetic properties are well described by the pseudo-second-order model. In addition, the synthesized composites' reusability without obvious deterioration in performance is demonstrated by three cycles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Left-hand traffic (LHC) and right-hand traffic (RHC) are two different rules of road adopted by countries on account of native culture and history. This paper investigates into security of road rules from the perspective of safe distance and its explaining variable drivers' response time during changing lane and overtaking. Road traffic capacity model and safe distance model are proposed to calculate safe distance based on ellipse vehicle model given that traffic capacity, driver classification, and vehicle speed and size.58 subjects are divided into LHC and RHC group tested their eye fixation in 9 regions when overtaking by eye tracker which constitutes drivers' response time. Undertaken independent-sample T test, test results indicate RHC’ s overtaking safe distance distinct from LHC and RHC has shorter response time and longer safe distance.
