In this paper, a novel concept called simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) is introduced into the wireless-powered mobile edge computing (MEC) systems to improve the efficiency of energy transfer and task offloading. Compared with traditional reflecting-only RIS, STAR-RIS extends the half-space coverage to full-space coverage by simultaneously transmitting and reflecting incident signals, and also provides new degrees-of-freedom (DoFs) for manipulating signal propagation. We aim to maximize the total computation rate of all users, where the energy transfer time, transmit power and CPU frequencies of users, and the configuration design of STAR-RIS are jointly optimized. Considering the characteristics of STAR-RIS, three operating protocols, namely energy splitting (ES), mode switching (MS), and time splitting (TS) are studied, respectively. For the ES protocol, based on the penalty method, successive convex approximation (SCA), and the linear search method, an iterative algorithm is proposed to solve the formulated non-convex problem. Then, the proposed algorithm for ES protocol is extended to solve the MS and TS problems. Simulation results illustrate that the STAR-RIS outperforms traditional reflecting/transmitting-only RIS. More importantly, the TS protocol can achieve the largest computation rate among the three operating protocols of STAR-RIS.

The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled mobile edge computing (MEC) has been deemed a promising paradigm to provide ubiquitous communication and computing services for the Internet of Things (IoT). Besides, by intelligently reflecting the received signals, the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can significantly improve the propagation environment and further enhance the service quality of the UAV-enabled MEC. Motivated by this vision, in this paper, we consider both the amount of completed task bits and the energy consumption to maximize the energy efficiency of the RIS-assisted UAV-enabled MEC systems, where the bit allocation, transmit power, phase shift, and UAV trajectory are jointly optimized by an iterative algorithm with a double-loop structure based on the Dinkelbach's method and block coordinate decent (BCD) technique. Simulation results demonstrate that: 1) with the deployment of RIS, our proposed algorithm can achieve higher energy efficiency than baseline schemes while satisfying the task tolerance latency; 2) the energy efficiency first increases and then decreases with the increase of the mission period and the total amount of task-input bits of IoT devices; 3) when the CPU cycles required for computing 1-bit of task-input data becomes larger, more task bits will be offloaded to the UAV while the energy efficiency will be decreased.

This paper proposes a tractable solution for integrating non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) into massive machine-type communications (mMTC) to increase the uplink connectivity. Multiple transmit power levels are provided at the user end to enable open-loop power control, which is absent from the traditional uplink NOMA with the fixed transmit power. The basics of this solution are firstly presented to analytically show the inherent performance gain in terms of the average arrival rate (AAR). Then, a practical framework based on a novel power map is proposed to associate a set of well-designed transmit power levels with each geographical region for handling the no instantaneous channel state information problem. Based on this framework, the semi-grant-free (semi-GF) transmission with two practical protocols is introduced to enhance the connectivity, which has higher AAR than both the conventional grand-based and GF transmissions. When the number of active GF devices in mMTC far exceeds the available resource blocks, the corresponding AAR tends to zero. To solve this problem, user barring techniques are employed into the semi-GF transmission to stable the traffic flow and thus increase the AAR. Lastly, promising research directions are discussed for improving the proposed networks.

In this paper, we study the performance of an uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network under statistical quality of service (QoS) delay constraints, captured through each user s effective capacity (EC). We first propose novel closed-form expressions for the EC in a two-user NOMA network and show that in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region, the 'strong' NOMA user, referred to as U2, has a limited EC, assuming the same delay constraint as the 'weak' user, referred to as U1. We demonstrate that for the weak userU1, OMA and NOMA have comparable performance at low transmit SNRs, while NOMA outperforms OMA in terms of EC at high SNRs. On the other hand, for the strong user U2, NOMA achieves higher EC than OMA at small SNRs, while OMA becomes more beneficial at high SNRs. Furthermore, we show that at high transmit SNRs, irrespective of whether the application is delay tolerant, or not, the performance gains of NOMA over OMA for U1, and OMA over NOMA for U2 remain unchanged. When the delay QoS of one user is fixed, the performance gap between NOMA and OMA in terms of total EC increases with decreasing statistical delay QoS constraints for the other user. Next, by introducing pairing, we show that NOMA with user-pairing outperforms OMA, in terms of total uplink EC. The best pairing strategies are given in the cases of four and six users NOMA, raising once again the importance of power allocation in the optimization of NOMA s performance., Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures. Being able to accommodate multiple simultaneous transmissions on a single channel, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) appears as an attractive solution to support massive machine type communication (mMTC) that faces a massive number of devices competing to access the limited number of shared radio resources. In this paper, we first analytically study the throughput performance of NOMA-based random access (RA), namely NOMA-RA. We show that while increasing the number of power levels in NOMA-RA leads to a further gain in maximum throughput, the growth of throughput gain is slower than linear. This is due to the higher-power dominance characteristic in power-domain NOMA known in the literature. We explicitly quantify the throughput gain for the very first time in this paper. With our analytical model, we verify the performance advantage of the proposed NOMA-RA scheme by comparing with the baseline multi-channel slotted ALOHA (MS-ALOHA), with and without capture effect. Despite the higher-power dominance effect, the maximum throughput of NOMA-RA with four power levels achieves over three times that of the MS-ALOHA. However, our analytical results also reveal the sensitivity of load on the throughput of NOMA-RA. To cope with the potential bursty traffic in mMTC scenarios, we propose adaptive load regulation through a practical user barring algorithm. By estimating the current load based on the observable channel feedback, the algorithm adaptively controls user access to maintain the optimal loading of channels to achieve maximum throughput. When the proposed user barring algorithm is applied, simulations demonstrate that the instantaneous throughput of NOMA-RA always remains close to the maximum throughput confirming the effectiveness of our load regulation.

Various verticals in 5G and beyond (B5G) networks require very stringent latency guarantees, while at the same time envisioning massive connectivity. As a result, choosing the optimal multiple access (MA) technique to achieve low latency is a key enabler of B5G. In particular, this issue is more acute in uplink transmissions due to the potentially high number of collisions. On this premise, in the present contribution we discuss the issue of delay-sensitive uplink connectivity using optimized MA techniques; to this end, we perform a comparative analysis of various MA approaches with respect to the achievable effective capacity (EC). As opposed to standard rate (PHY) or throughput (MAC) analyses, we propose the concept of the effective capacity as a suitable metric for characterizing jointly PHY-MAC layer delays. The palette of investigated MA approaches includes standard orthogonal MA (OMA) and power domain non orthogonal MA (NOMA) in uplink scenarios, both considering random pairing and optimized pairing alternatives. It further extends to encompass a recently proposed third alternative, referred to as NOMA-Relevant (NOMA-R), which extends OMA and NOMA approaches by flexibly selecting the MA technique. We show that optimizing both user pairing and MA selection increases the network EC, especially when stringent delay constraints are in place; thus a flexible MA is a potentially preferable strategy for future low latency applications
