We present the results of our study of the relationship between FR0 radio galaxies and GPS sources. Quasi-simultaneous radio spectra of 34 FR0s were obtained at 2.25-22.3 GHz with the radio telescope RATAN-600 in 2020-2021 during 2-6 epochs. Most FR0s have flat radio spectra, but we found many spectra with a peaked shape. Due to this fact and the compact nature of FR0s, we suggest their possible relationship with CSS/GPS radio sources. We analyzed broadband radio spectra of the 34 FR0s using the RATAN-600 measurements and available literature data. There are 14 FR0 objects which can be CSS/GPS radio source candidates. Most FR0s have broader radio spectra than those of genuine GPS sources, with FWHM > 2 like in blazars. Most spectral indices at the frequencies below and above the peak do not correspond to the values typical of canonical GPS sources. We classified 3 FR0s as low-power GPS sources according to the canonical criteria. The key issue is the variability properties of FR0s. Some FR0s demonstrate a variability level of up to 25 % on a time scale of one year according to the RATAN-600 measurements. The flare phenomena in FR0 objects can imply a relationship between them and blazars.

Recent studies have shown that among the population of radio-loud active galactic nuclei in the local U-niverse, they numerically dominate compact radio sources of the FR0 class. In this paper, we present ob-servation results of a sample of 33 FR0 radio galaxies with RATAN-600 in the first half of 2020. For the first time, quasi-simultaneous spectra of this class objects have been measured in the frequency range as wide as 2.25–22.3 GHz. Radio luminosity of the sampled objects at the frequency 4.7 GHz varies within $${{10}^{{38.8 - 40.6}}}$$ erg/s, with the average value of $${{10}^{{39.7}}}$$ erg/s. The data confirm the deficit of extended radio emission: the average value of the core-dominance parameter ( $$\log R \approx - 0.10$$ ) substantially exceeds the values typical for FRI galaxies. Quasi-simultaneous spectra are flat, while in the range 4.7–8.2 GHz, the average spectral index is close to zero. The spectra of 44 percent of objects which have more than three quasi-simultaneous points have peaked-shaped profiles. Using additional data of catalogs allowed us to identify three new candidates for the sources with the maximum of the spectrum in the GHz range. A statistically significant correlation was found between the parsec scale jet power and the bolometric luminosity of the accretion disk: $$\log\tfrac{{{{L}_{j}}}}{{{{L}_{{{\text{Edd}}}}}}} = (0.52 \pm 0.15)\log\tfrac{{{{L}_{{{\text{bol}}}}}}}{{{{L}_{{{\text{Edd}}}}}}} - (0.69 \pm 0.51)$$ . In general, the spectra of the studied objects are flat and have a complex structure, which indicates a high opacity in the radio range and the contribution of several components to the total spectrum.

In this paper we present the RATAN-600 multi-frequency catalogue of blazars, an updated version of the BLcat: the RATAN-600 multi-frequency catalogue of BL Lacertae objects. The main novelty in the catalogue is an extension of the sample with flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), thus currently it contains more than 1700 blazars of different types. The main feature of the BLcat is a compilation of radio continuum data for blazars based on the RATAN-600 quasi-simultaneous measurements at frequencies of 1.2, 2.3, 4.7, 7.7/8.2, 11.2, and 21.7/22.3 GHz. We additionally supplement the catalogue with the radio data from external sources to provide an opportunity to more complete study of radio spectra and radio light curves. For the convenience of users, we developed tools to calculate the spectral index, variability index, and radio luminosity. We briefly describe basic radio properties of blazar subsamples of the catalogue: spectral classification, spectral indices, flux density variability, and radio luminosity., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

The possible association with the high-energy neutrino event IceCube-170922A has sparked interest in the blazar TXS 0506+056. We present 72 instantaneous 1–22 GHz spectra measured over the past 20 years with the RATAN-600 telescope and compare them with the results of observations of 700 variable Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) studied within the same program. The recent radio flare of TXS 0506+056 started from a minimum in 2013 and reached its first peak in December 2017 and a second peak in May-June 2018. This was the third strong radio flare in this source since 1997. The spectrum remains nearly flat during the flares. The spectral shape and variability pattern observed in TXS 0506+056 are typical for variable AGN. RadioAstron Space VLBI observations in 2013–2015 did not detect TXS 0506+056 on space-ground baselines of more than 9 Earth diameters. However, an observation on 23 September 2015 resulted in the detection of interferometric signal on 6 Earth diameter baselines at 18 cm close to the detection limit. We consider the possibility that TXS 0506+056 and other AGN may accelerate relativistic protons more efficiently than electrons. Relativistic protons are necessary to produce both the high-energy neutrinos observed in the IceCube Observatory and the high AGN brightness temperatures implied by the RadioAstron detection. They may also provide the main contribution to the observed synchrotron radiation of parsec-scale AGN jets. This supports the suggestion that relativistic protons may play a much more important part in extragalactic astrophysics than earlier anticipated.

A method of “self-calibration” of two sectors of the RATAN-600 radio telescope based on synchronous measurements of strong extragalactic sources, including variable ones, is proposed. The method gives refined corrections to the standard calibration of each of the telescope’s sector. It is based on the fact that ideal synchronous independent measurements of the same object should give the same results. Differences from the unity of the result of approximating the flux ratio synchronously measured at two sectors for a subsample of strong sources are considered as systematic calibration errors and used to calculate corrections that exclude these errors, and are applied to measurements of all sample objects in this observation cycle. The method was tested with RATAN-600 two sectors in meridian multifrequency measurements and can be used for independent pairs of any closely spaced antennas. In this case, the analog of RATAN-600 sector is a separate telescope. For far-spaced antennas, an additional error will be introduced due to different effects of the atmosphere and altitude of objects during synchronous observations.

We present a study of the radio continuum properties of two luminous/ultraluminous infrared galaxy samples: the OH megamaser (OHM) sample (74 objects) and the control sample (128 objects) without detected maser emission. We carried out pilot observations for 140 objects with the radio telescope RATAN-600 at 1.2, 2.3, 4.7, 8.2, 11.2, and 22.3 GHz in 2019-2021. The OHM sample has two times more flat-spectrum sources (32 per cent) than the control sample. Steep radio spectra prevail in both samples. The median spectral index at 4.7 GHz $\alpha_{4.7}=-0.59$ for the OHM sample, and $\alpha_{4.7}=-0.71$ for the non-OHM galaxies. We confirm a tight correlation of the far-infrared (FIR) and radio luminosities for the OHM sample. We found correlations between isotropic OH line luminosity $L_{OH}$ and the spectral index $\alpha_{4.7}$ ($\rho$=0.26, p-val.=0.04) and between $L_{OH}$ and radio luminosity $P_{1.4}$ ($\rho$=0.35, p-val.=0.005). Reviewing subsamples of masers powered by active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and star formation revealed insignificant differences for their FIR and radio properties. Nonetheless, AGN-powered galaxies exhibit larger scatter in a range of parameters and their standard deviations. The similarities in the radio and FIR properties in the two samples are presumably caused by the presence of a significant amount of AGN sources in both samples (47 and 30 per cent in the OHM and control samples) and/or possibly by the presence of undetected OH emission sources in the control sample., Comment: 15 pages + 10 pages of online material, published 4 December 2021 in MNRAS

We present the radio properties of optically selected quasars with $z\geq3$. The complete sample consists of 102 quasars with a flux density level $S_{1.4}\geq100$ mJy in a declination range -35$^{\circ}$ $\leq$ Dec $\leq$ +49$^{\circ}$. The observations were obtained in 2017-2020 using the radio telescope RATAN-600. We measured flux densities at six frequencies 1.2, 2.3, 4.7, 8.2, 11.2, and 22 GHz quasi-simultaneously with uncertainties of 9-31 %. The detection rate is 100, 89, and 46 % at 4.7, 11.2, and 22 GHz, respectively. We have analysed the averaged radio spectra of the quasars based on the RATAN and literature data. We classify 46 % of radio spectra as peaked-spectrum, 24 % as flat, and none as ultra-steep spectra ($\alpha\leq-1.1$). The multifrequency data reveal that a peaked spectral shape (PS) is a common feature for bright high-redshift quasars. This indicates the dominance of bright compact core emission and the insignificant contribution of extended optically thin kpc-scale components in observed radio spectra. Using these new radio data, the radio loudness $\log~R$ was estimated for 71 objects with a median value of 3.5, showing that the majority of the quasars are highly radio-loud with $\log~R>2.5$. We have not found any significant correlation between $z$ and $\alpha$. Several new megahertz-peaked spectrum (MPS) and gigahertz-peaked spectrum (GPS) candidates are suggested. We report the radio continuum properties for several samples of peaked spectrum (PS) radio sources. Broadband spectra of the objects were analysed using the RATAN-600 six-frequency (1.2-22 GHz) observations and available literature data, obtained on a time scale of 20-30 years. We discuss statistical differences in radio properties for several AGN types with peaked spectra and focus on PS quasars at high redshifts ($z > 3$). We confirm that a relatively small fraction (1-2%) of bright PS sources can be considered as genuine GPSs when they have been monitored densely and for a long time. A new method is proposed for studying the population of distant radio sources. It is based on building the average continuum radio spectrum for objects located within the given redshift interval. In this paper the redshift bin size dz is set equal to 0.1. The data about the average spectra can theoretically be used to study the distribution of the large-scale structure and the features of its formation. On the practical side the average spectra at different z can be used to simulate the distribution of radio sources, which is required in various computational tasks. The change of the form of the spectrum at different z is indicative of the cosmological evolution of the population of radio sources.

We review the methods of determining the alignment errors of the primary mirror and flat reflector elements of the RATAN-600 radio telescope using a modern coordinate measuring system based on the Leica absolute tracker AT402. We computed the kinematic corrections for the elevation drives. The accuracy of the measurement method was estimated. The antenna readout with the introduced kinematic corrections was tested.

Gigahertz-Peaked spectrum (GPS) sources are compact active galactic nuclei, presumably young precursors of bright radio sources. The study of GPS radio properties provides information about the features of synchrotron radiation in extragalactic sources. Also in applied research GPS sources are useful as compact stationary radio sources in the sky for astrometric purposes. This paper presents the results of a multifrequency GPS study based on quasi-simultaneous measurements with the RATAN-600 radio telescope during the 2006-2017. The catalog containing spectral flux densities measured at six frequencies (1.1, 2.3, 4.8, 7.7/8.2, 11.2, and 21.7 GHz) have been obtained. In addition, for the analysis of radio spectra, data from the following low-frequency surveys have been used: GLEAM (GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison widefield array survey) and TGSS (Tata institute for fundamental research GMRT Sky Survey) and high-frequency measurements from Planck survey. A total number of 164 GPS and candidates to GPS have been identified (17 of them are new discoveries), which makes up a small fraction of GPS in the initial sample of bright AGNs, about 2%. The physical properties and formation conditions of synchrotron radiation is found to be quite different in GPS of different AGN types. The deficit of distant GPS ($z > 2$) with low maximum frequencies (less than 1 GHz) is confirmed. The existing 'size - peak frequency' anticorrelation is continuous. We present the automated systemfor estimating the parameters of radio sources observed on all available continuum radiometers (two receiving facilities of secondary mirrors No. 1 and No. 2 with a total of 30 radiometers) developed at RATAN-600 radio telescope and put into normal operation. The system is also used for the monitoring of the parameters of the antenna and receiving systems of RATAN-600 radio telescope, which is carried out using current measurements of calibration radio sources.

We present a multiwavelength study of the flat-spectrum radio quasar CTA 102 during 2013-2017. We use radio-to-optical data obtained by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope, 15 GHz data from the Owens Valley Radio Observatory, 91 and 103 GHz data from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array, near-infrared data from the Rapid Eye Monitor telescope, as well as data from the Swift (optical-UV and X-rays) and Fermi (γ -rays) satellites to study flux and spectral variability and the correlation between flux changes at different wavelengths. Unprecedented γ -ray flaring activity was observed during 2016 November-2017 February, with four major outbursts. A peak flux of (2158 ± 63) × 10−8 ph cm−2 s−1, corresponding to a luminosity of (2.2 ± 0.1) × 1050 erg s−1, was reached on 2016 December 28. These four γ -ray outbursts have corresponding events in the near-infrared, optical, and UV bands, with the peaks observed at the same time. A general agreement between X-ray and γ -ray activity is found. The γ -ray flux variations show a general, strong correlation with the optical ones with no time lag between the two bands and a comparable variability amplitude. This γ -ray/optical relationship is in agreement with the geometrical model that has successfully explained the low-energy flux and spectral behaviour, suggesting that the long-term flux variations are mainly due to changes in the Doppler factor produced by variations of the viewing angle of the emitting regions. We study the synchrotron component of nonthermal radiation of blazars using the spectral energy distribution (SED). The sample contains a total of 877 blazars, including 423 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), 361 BL Lac objects and candidates, and 93 blazars of uncertain type. Using the ASDC SED Builder Tool, we have made an estimation of the synchrotron peak frequency νpeaks using archive data of different catalogs. The position of the synchrotron peak frequency was determined for 875 objects, which were further classified as follows: 611 low-synchrotron peaked (LSP) blazars (νpeaks 1016.5 Hz). For the FSRQs the average νpeaks is 1013.4±1.0 Hz, for the BL Lac-type blazars it equals 1014.6±1.4 Hz. We found that νpeaks values and the spectral flux density at 4.8 GHz form different distributions for two types of blazars—FSRQ and BL Lac— and for the radio-selected (RBLs) and x-ray-selected (XBLs) blazars. The distribution of νpeaks values is broader for BL Lac objects than for FSRQs. There are no ultra-high-energy synchrotron-peak BL Lac objects (UHBLs, with νpeaks > 1019 Hz) in our sample. We have found very-low-synchrotron peaked (VLSP) blazar candidates (with νpeaks < 1013 Hz). Most of them are the FSRQs (41% of the total number) and only 9%are the BL Lac objects. Our results confirm the results of other authors, made on the samples with a significantly smaller number of objects.

We made an estimation of the synchrotron peak frequency (ν peak ) of the spectral energy distribution (SED) for six blazars. These objects were selected as very-low-synchrotron peaked (VLSP) blazar candidates (with ν peak ≤ 1013 Hz).We have built the SED of the studied objects using quasi-simultaneous observations on the SAO RAS Zeiss-1000 and RATAN-600 telescopes and made an estimation of the synchrotron peak frequency. As a result, three sources (PKS0446+11, [HB89] 1308+326, and 3C345) were confirmed as VLSP, for the three remaining blazars the calculations have shown ν peak > 1013 Hz.

We present the results of nine years of the blazar observing programme at the RATAN-600 radio telescope (2005-2014). The data were obtained at six frequency bands (1.1, 2.3, 4.8, 7.7, 11.2, 21.7 GHz) for 290 blazars, mostly BL Lacs. In addition, we used data at 37 GHz obtained quasi-simultaneously with the Metsahovi radio observatory for some sources. The sample includes blazars of three types: high-synchrotron peaked (HSP), low-synchrotron peaked (LSP), and intermediate-synchrotron peaked (ISP). We present several epochs of flux density measurements, simultaneous radio spectra, spectral indices and properties of their variability. The analysis of the radio properties of different classes of blazars showed that LSP and HSP BL Lac blazars are quite different objects on average. LSPs have higher flux densities, flatter spectra and their variability increases as higher frequencies are considered. On the other hand, HSPs are very faint in radio domain, tend to have steep low frequency spectra, and they are less variable than LSPs at all frequencies. Another result is spectral flattening above 7.7 GHz detected in HSPs, while an average LSP spectrum typically remains flat at both the low and high frequency ranges we considered., 14 pages, 6 figures. We study the correlation between the emission from the broad-line region (BLR) and the emission in other wavelength ranges (from radio to x-ray) for the sample of 37 blazars (25 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and 10 BLLac blazars). Studying the relation between luminosities in various wavebands and the BLR luminosity is an effective method to examine the connection between the accretion rate and the luminosity of the jet.We used simultaneous RATAN-600measurements of blazar flux densities at six frequencies: 1.1, 2.3, 4.8, 7.7, 11.2, and 21.7 GHz. The observational data from other bands was taken from the literature. To determine the effect produced by the state of the object on the correlation, for the radio data we used the measurements obtained with the RATAN-600 in two states-namely, the maximum and minimum flux density values.We show that at some frequencies of the radio band, there exists a correlation of emission with the emission in the BLR for two types of blazars. In the FSRQ and BL Lac blazars, the correlation between the flux from the BLR and the flux in the radio band is indistinguishable in all cases, except for the case when a strong flux density variation was considered for the BL Lac-type of blazars (tens of percent). At the same time, the levels of significance for BL Lac (at certain frequencies p is worse than 0.05) in the active state indicate only the probable presence of connection. On the example of the sample, we show that the variability of emission significantly affects the level of correlation. Our results are consistent with the theoretical predictions about the close relationship of the accretion disk and the jet in blazars.

The results of a comprehensive analysis of continuous radio spectra of a sample of Gigahertz-Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources are reported. The sources are selected from a flux-density-complete sample (S ν ≥ 200 mJy at 4.8 or 5 GHz) using multifrequency measurements of the RATAN-600 radio telescope and data from the CATS astrophysical catalogs support system. The analysis revealed a very small number (1–2%) of “classical” GPS objects, which is significantly less than the expected fraction of 10%. GPS galaxies are found to have narrower and steeper radio spectra than quasars. The low-frequency part of the spectrum is seen to become steeper with increasing redshift. Galaxies and quasars at the same z have comparable angular sizes, whereas their luminosities may differ by one order of magnitude. At large redshifts there is a deficit of objects with low (several GHZ) peak frequencies. The number of GPS galaxies decreases sharply with redshift, and most of them are found at z between 0.01 and 1.81. GPS quasars are found at large redshifts, from 0.11 to 3.99. A quarter of the sample consists of blazars whose spectra may temporarily have a convex shape when the object is in active state.

Observations at 37 GHz, performed at Mets\"ahovi Radio Observatory, are presented for a sample of 78 radio-loud and radio-quiet narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, together with additional lower and higher frequency radio data from RATAN-600, Owens Valley Radio Observatory, and the Planck satellite. Most of the data have been gathered between February 2012 and April 2015 but for some sources even longer lightcurves exist. The detection rate at 37 GHz is around 19%, comparable to other populations of active galactic nuclei presumed to be faint at radio frequencies, such as BL Lac objects. Variability and spectral indices are determined for sources with enough detections. Based on the radio data, many NLS1 galaxies show a blazar-like radio spectra exhibiting significant variability. The spectra at a given time are often inverted or convex. The source of the high-frequency radio emission in NLS1 galaxies, detected at 37 GHz, is most probably a relativistic jet rather than star formation. Jets in NLS1 galaxies are therefore expected to be a much more common phenomenon than earlier assumed., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Results of observations of the five candidate GPS sources J0626+8202, J0726+7911, J1044+8054, J1823+7938, and J1935+8130 are presented. GPS sources are extragalactic sources whose spectral peaks are near several GHz. These objects were observed on the RATAN-600 radio telescope from 1999 through 2010 at 1.1, 2.3, 4.8, 7.7, 11.2, and 21.7 GHz. These radio sources were selected from a complete sample (Sv ≥ 200 mJy at 1.4 GHz) in the vicinity of the North Celestial Pole (+75° ≤ δ ≤ +88°); four are considered as GPS candidates for the first time here. Their spectral properties, variability and morphology are analyzed, and confirms that these can be classified as GPS sources. These four to five GPS sources probably comprise a complete sample of this class of object in this region of the celestial sphere.

We present the results of our observations of compact extragalactic radio sources near the north celestial pole (+75° ≤ δ ≤ +88°) obtained on the RATAN-600 radio telescope. Our sample consists of 51 radio sources with spectra that are either flat or inverted (growing toward shorter wavelengths) and with flux densities at 1.4 GHz Sν ≥ 200 mJy. We observed the sources at 1–21.7 GHz. Multi-frequency instantaneous spectra are presented for 1999–2007. We observed 33 of our sample source daily for 30 days in August 2007. As a result, we revealed 15 objects exhibiting rapid variations on time scales of a day. The multi-frequency instantaneous spectra of these sources indicate that radio flux variations on one-day timescales are characteristic of objects of various spectral types. More than half the sources exhibiting rapid variations demonstrate a growth in the variability amplitude with increasing frequency. For some of the objects, the variability amplitude is virtually independent of frequency.

We report here the results of observations of two BL Lacertae-type objects, J2005+77 and J2022+76, using the RATAN-600 at frequencies 11.2, 7.7, and 4.8 GHz. We found variations of radio emission on timescales of one day and we are the first to discover a variability of this type for J2022+76.We compare our observations with long-term multifrequency radio observations of the same sources performed on RATAN-600 within the framework of other observational programs. We analyze the behaviour of variability of the two sources and provide arguments in favour of the preferred emission generation mechanisms for the objects studied.

We have used the RATAN-600 radio telescope to study the spectral characteristics of a uniform sample of 504 radio sources from the NVSS catalog near the North Celestial Pole at six frequencies from 1.1 to 21.7 GHz, with the aim of selecting sources possessing inverted spectra near 22 GHz, to be included in the program of the Radio Astron future space VLBI mission. We found 17 radio sources with the desired spectral characteristics. Data from spectral studies over a wide wavelength range testify that the spectral behavior of our sample differs from that for a complete sample of sources with the same initial parameters but selected at 20 GHz. We find a 6% deficit of inverted-spectrum sources, which can be explained as an effect of the spectral characteristics of “sub-threshold” sources that were not included in the initial sample at 1.4 GHz.

We study the correlation between gamma-ray and radio band radiation for 123 blazars, using the Fermi-LAT first source catalog (1FGL) and the RATAN-600 data obtained at the same period of time (within a few months). We found an apparent positive correlation for BL Lac and flat-spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) sources from our sample through testing the value of the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient. The BL Lac objects show higher values of the correlation coefficient than FSRQs at all frequencies, except 21.7 GHz, and at all bands, except $10-100$ GeV, typically at high confidence level (> 99%). At higher gamma-ray energies the correlation weakens and even becomes negative for BL Lacs and FSRQs. For BL Lac blazars, the correlation of the fluxes appeared to be more sensitive to the considered gamma-ray energy band, than to the frequency, while for FSRQ sources the correlation changed notably both with the considered radio frequency and gamma-ray energy band. We used a data randomization method to quantify the significance of the computed correlation coefficients. We find that the statistical significance of the correlations we obtained between the flux densities at all frequencies and the photon flux in all gamma-ray bands below 3 GeV is high for BL Lacs (chance probability $\sim 10^{-3} - 10^{-7}$). The correlation coefficient is high and significant for the $0.1-0.3$ GeV band and low and insignificant for the $10-100$ GeV band for both types of blazars for all considered frequencies., 14 pages, 5 tables, 8 figures, accepted to MNRAS

The process of extinguishing a propane-air flame by aerosols of salt solutions has been investigated with the use of an atomic absorption spectrometer. The method of comparing aerosols in terms of the extinguishing efficiency has been evaluated. The changes in the flame temperature and spectra at different jet heights under the influence of aerosols of water and K2CO3 and Al(NO3)3 solutions have been shown.

Aims. We present a new catalogue of the RATAN-600 multi-frequency measurements for BL Lac objects. The purpose of this catalogue is to compile the BL Lac multi-frequency data that is acquired with the RATAN-600 simultaneously at several frequencies. The BL Lac objects emit a strongly variable and polarized non-thermal radiation across the entire electromagnetic spectru m from radio toγ rays and represent about 1% of known AGNs. They belong to the blazar population and differ from other blazars’ featureless optical spectrum, which sometimes have absorption lines, or have weak and narrow emission lines. One of the most effective ways of studying the physics of BL Lacs is the use of simultaneous multi-frequency data. Methods. The multi-frequency broadband radio spectrum was obtained simultaneously with an accuracy of up to 1-2 minutes for four to six frequencies: 1.1, 2.3, 4.8, 7.7, 11.2, and 21.7 GHz. The catalogue is based on the RATAN-600 observations and on the data from: equatorial coordinate and redshift, R-band magnitude, synchrotron peak frequency, SED classes and object type, literature. Results. The present version of the catalogue contains RATAN-600 flux densities measurements over nine years (2006‐2014), radio spectra at different epochs, and their parameters for more than 300 BL Lacs objects and candidates. The BL Lacs list is constantly updated with new observational data of RATAN-600.

Planck Collaboration et al., We present simultaneous Planck, Swift, Fermi, and ground-based data for 105 blazars belonging to three samples with flux limits in the soft X-ray, hard X-ray, and γ-ray bands, with additional 5GHz flux-density limits to ensure a good probability of a Planck detection. We compare our results to those of a companion paper presenting simultaneous Planck and multi-frequency observations of 104 radio-loud northern active galactic nuclei selected at radio frequencies. While we confirm several previous results, our unique data set allows us to demonstrate that the selection method strongly influences the results, producing biases that cannot be ignored. Almost all the BL Lac objects have been detected by the Fermi Large AreaTelescope (LAT), whereas 30% to 40% of the flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) in the radio, soft X-ray, and hard X-ray selected samples are still below the γ-ray detection limit even after integrating 27 months of Fermi-LAT data. The radio to sub-millimetre spectral slope of blazars is quite flat, with α ~ 0 up to about 70GHz, above which it steepens to α ~-0.65. The BL Lacs have significantly flatter spectra than FSRQs at higher frequencies. The distribution of the rest-frame synchrotron peak frequency (ν peak S) in the spectral energy distribution (SED) of FSRQs is the same in all the blazar samples with ν peak S = 10 13.1 ± 0.1 Hz, while the mean inverse Compton peak frequency, ν peak IC, ranges from 10 21 to 10 22 Hz. The distributions of ν peak S and ν peak IC of BL Lacs are much broader and are shifted to higher energies than those of FSRQs; their shapes strongly depend on the selection method. The Compton dominance of blazars, defined as the ratio of the inverse Compton to synchrotron peak luminosities, ranges from less than 0.2 to nearly 100, with only FSRQs reaching values larger than about 3. Its distribution is broad and depends strongly on the selection method, with γ-ray selected blazars peaking at ~7 or more, and radio-selected blazars at values close to 1, thus implying that the common assumption that the blazar power budget is largely dominated by high-energy emission is a selection effect. A comparison of our multi-frequency data with theoretical predictions shows that simple homogeneous SSC models cannot explain the simultaneous SEDs of most of the γ-ray detected blazars in all samples. The SED of the blazars that were not detected by Fermi-LAT may instead be consistent with SSC emission. Context. Gigahertz peaked spectrum (GPS) radio sources are a class of extragalactic radio sources characterized by a spectral peak in the gigahertz domain. They are a mixed class of quasars and galaxies. A large proportion of the sources studied in the literature have only few data points in the radio domain, and the determination of variability and shape of the simultaneous spectra is inadequate. Sources currently included in the GPS source lists are very heterogeneous. Aims. We present the observational results from 12 observing campaigns (carried out between 2006 and 2010) at the RATAN-600 radio telescope to obtain the simultaneous radio spectra, which is valuable and necessary to derive genuine GPS sources from flat-spectrum radio sources caught in a flaring state when their spectra are temporarily inverted. The sample contains both quasar- and galaxy-type GPS (122 sources) identified in the literature. Methods. The observations were carried out at six frequencies (1.1, 2.3, 4.8, 7.7, 11.2 and 21.7 GHz). The flux densities were measured at several epochs. A six-frequency broadband radio spectrum was obtained by observing simultaneously with an accuracy of up to a minute at 1.4, 2.7, 3.9, 6.25, 13, and 30 cm. Results. The original GPS source samples were highly contaminated. Finally, we selected 29% GPS source candidates within the sample. We found some difference in spectral properties between GPS galaxies and quasars within the sample. The GPS galaxies demonstrate a steeper spectral index in the optically thin part of the spectra. There are only relatively few (17) sources whose radio spectra strictly agree with the spectra of homogeneous self-absorbed synchrotron sources. The narrowest radio spectra are found in both ultra-high-z (z ≥ 1.8) and low-z (0.02 ≤ z ≤ 0.7, FWHM ~ 0.9) convex spectrum radio sources. The majority of quasars within this sample should be considered as flat-spectrum radio sources with a temporarily inverted spectrum, and not as genuine GPS sources. The number of truly convex-spectrum sources remains low, and the lists of GPS sources should accordingly be revised.
