Abstract Background Melon (Cucumis melo L.), an important cucurbit crop, faces production limitations due to powdery mildew (PM). Developing resistant varieties offers a sustainable, genetics-based alternative to chemical treatments. Therefore, identifying PM resistance quantitative trait loci (QTL) and creating trait-associated markers are essential for efficient melon PM resistance improvement through marker-assisted backcrossing (MABC). Results Three F2 populations, A6, B2, and C4, were generated for QTL mapping of PM resistance. Major QTL were identified on chromosome 2 in A6, chromosome 5 in B2, and chromosomes 5 and 12 in C4. A series of TaqMan® assays targeting regions on chromosomes 2, 5, and 12 were developed and validated for foreground and recombinant selection, complemented by the double digest restriction-site associated DNA genotyping system to evaluate the recurrent parent genome recovery. Three MABC programs using resistant donor parents from A6 and C4 crossed with elite susceptible recurrent parents with green and orange fruit flesh were implemented. After two to three cycles of MABC, individual QTL was successfully introgressed into elite genetic backgrounds, giving six PM resistance lines in each green- and orange-fleshed background. PM inoculation on the twelve near-isogenic lines confirmed their resistance to PM. Conclusions We have identified major PM resistance QTL for melon on chromosomes 2, 5, and 12 and have introgressed individual QTL to elite genetic backgrounds using MABC in three and a half years. This study demonstrates the power of combining high-throughput genotyping with breeding efforts and showcases the efficiency of molecular breeding.

Coriolopsis trogii and Cerrena unicolor were investigated for laccase production in submerged fermentation with different nutrient medium containing metal ions and lignocellulosic materials. The maximum laccase activity of C. trogii Han751 was 8584.44 ± 98.45 U/L and was obtained from nutrient medium 7. However, the maximum laccase activity of C. unicolor Han 849 was 16144.26 ± 635.30 U/L from nutrient medium 9. Thus, the capacity of secreting laccase of C. unicolor Han 849 was superior to that of C. trogii Han751. Different fungal species have different medium components suitable for laccase production. The content of CuSO4·5H2O and MnSO4 in nutrient medium with the concentration of 0.25 g/L and 0.151 g/L, respectively, was more beneficial to C. trogii Han751 secreting laccase. However, the vital components of nutrient medium that contribute to the laccase activity of C. unicolor Han 849 were corncob, glucose, and CuSO4·5H2O, with the corresponding concentrations of 1 g/flask, 5 g/L, and 0.25 g/L, respectively. The results will contribute to the development of new methods to produce low-cost laccase.

IntroductionAs tick-borne diseases rise to become the second most prevalent arthropod-transmitted disease globally, the increasing investigations focus on ticks correspondingly. Factors contributed to this increase include anthropogenic influences, changes in vertebrate faunal composition, social-recreational shifts, and climatic variation. Employing the 16S gene sequence method in next-generation sequencing (NGS) allows comprehensive pathogen identification in samples, facilitating the development of refined approaches to tick research omnidirectionally.MethodsIn our survey, we compared the microbial richness and biological diversity of ticks in Wuwei City, Gansu province, differentiating between questing ticks found in grass and parasitic ticks collected from sheep based on 16S NGS method.ResultsThe results show Rickettsia, Coxiella, and Francisella were detected in all 50 Dermacentor nuttalli samples, suggesting that the co-infection may be linked to specific symbiotic bacteria in ticks. Our findings reveal significant differences in the composition and diversity of microorganisms, with the Friedmanniella and Bordetella genera existing more prevalent in parasitic ticks than in questing ticks (p 0.6. For instance, Francisella restrains the development of 10 other bacteria in parasitic ticks, whereas Phyllobacterium and Arthrobacter enhance colonization across all tick species.DiscussionBy leveraging NGS techniques, our study reveals a high degree of species and phylogenetic diversity within the tick microbiome. It further highlights the potential to investigate the interplay between bacterial genera in both parasitic and questing ticks residing in identical habitat environments.

Cancer continues to threaten people's lives and health, and the number of deaths from cancer is very high each year. Traditional treatments such as chemotherapy and surgery are poorly selective and have many side effects. While traditional cancer treatments kill tumor cells, they also damage normal cells and cause a series of toxic side effects. Targeted therapy can compensate for the shortcomings of conventional therapies based on nanomaterials. This paper introduces novel nanomaterials commonly used in tumor-targeted drug delivery as well as imaging therapy, demonstrates the types of active and passive drug delivery systems, and gives examples of research and applications in the past three years. The characteristics of nanomaterials for tumor-targeted therapy and their recent research progress in tumor therapy are summarized. This paper provides theoretical and practical support for nanomaterial-based targeted drug delivery systems and imaging therapy for tumors and provides a reference for the development of nanomaterials for controlled targeted therapy for tumors.

Abstract Carbon materials, including graphite, hard carbon, soft carbon, graphene, and carbon nanotubes, are widely used as high‐performance negative electrodes for sodium‐ion and potassium‐ion batteries (SIBs and PIBs). Compared with other materials, carbon materials are abundant, low‐cost, and environmentally friendly, and have excellent electrochemical properties, which make them especially suitable for negative electrode materials of SIBs and PIBs. Compared with traditional carbon materials, modifications of the morphology and size of nanomaterials represent effective strategies to improve the quality of electrode materials. Different nanostructures make different contributions toward improving the electrochemical performance of electrode materials, so the synthesis of nanomaterials is promising for controlling the morphology and size of electrode materials. This paper reviews the progress made and challenges in the use of carbon materials as negative electrode materials for SIBs and PIBs in recent years. The differences in Na+ and K+ storage mechanisms among different types of carbon materials are emphasized.

Laccase activity secreted by Pleurotus eryngii Han 1787 and Lentinus edodes Han 1788 grown on six types of agroindustrial wastes was investigated. Maximum laccase activity of P. eryngii Han 1787 on Ulmus pumila, Juniperus formosana, Pinus tabuliformis, cottonseed shell, corncob, and leaf of corncob was nearly 5.77-fold, 2.37-fold, 2.78-fold, 2.81-fold, 11.53-fold, and 6.73-fold higher than that of L. edodes Han1788 on corresponding agroindustrial wastes. In general, the capacity of secreting laccase of P. eryngii Han 1787 was superior to that of L. edodes Han 1788. Furthermore, laccase activity of P. eryngii Han 1787 on the leaf of corncob, the corncob, Ulmus pumila, and Juniperus formosana was relatively stable during the whole fermentation process. Different fungi showed different preferences in different agroindustrial wastes to secret laccase on whole fermentation stage. The presence of leaf of corncob was useful for improving laccase activity of P. eryngii Han 1787, while L. edodes Han 1788 was more preferred to produce laccase along with the presence of Juniperus formosana. These results were preliminary conducive in laying the foundation for increasing industrial laccase-producing strains and producing low-cost laccase.

Abstract Background The wooden bowl is an important symbol of the Tibetan cultures, yet, in China, little has been documented regarding the raw materials used to make these items as well as their cultural significance in Tibet. This study explores the ethnobotanical uses of plants used to make wooden bowls to understand their sustainability, cultural significance, and current status of related traditional knowledge in Gyirong Town, which is one of the most famous places for wooden bowl making. Materials and methods Between 2019 and 2021, key informant interviews, semi-structured interviews, and participatory observations were used to conduct ethnobotanical field surveys in Gyirong Valley. The field work was performed with the assistance of local guides. In this study, we utilized a use-report (UR) to reflect the number of mentions of a species by locals. Results Our results show that 16 different plants are used during the wooden bowl making process, of which nine are used as raw materials, three for dyeing, and four for varnishing. Although communities rely heavily on these plants, good management and collection methods were observed. We also documented the use of Fallopia denticulata as a red dye and four species of Impatiens as wood varnishes for the first time. Conclusion The wooden bowl craftsmen and their housewives have a wealth of traditional knowledge of using plants to make wooden bowls in Gyirong Town. And the wooden bowls are now also offering benefits to the locals as well. The government and local people are committed to the protection and development of traditional knowledge related to wooden bowls, and this knowledge maintains a healthy degree of vitality. This research can provide insights into the vitality of traditional handicrafts that are facing challenges and promote their protection.

Abstract Introduction Plant resources gathered from the wild are important sources of livelihood needs, especially for low-income populations living in remote areas, who rely on these plants for food, fuelwood, medicine and building materials. Yadong County is a valley at the border between the China, India and Bhutan in southern Tibet. Yadong is rich in biodiversity and culture, but ethnobotanical knowledge has not been systematically studied. This study aimed to document the ethnobotanical knowledge of Tibetans in Yadong County. Methods Ethnobotanical data were documented through free listings, key informant interviews, and semi-structured interviews during fieldwork. The culture importance index (CI) and informant consensus factor index (FIC) were used as the quantitative indices. Results In total, 163 informants (46 women and 117 men). A total of 3,031 use reports and 121 plant species belonging to 52 families and 91 genera were included. These use reports were then classified into 20 categories belonging to 9 major categories. The utilisation category that containing the most plant species was food, followed by economic, medicine, animal feed, social uses, other uses, environmental uses, materials and fuels. Among the economic plants, 32 medicinal plants are traditionally used in the local region. Plants with high CI included Fritillaria cirrhosa, Neopicrorhiza scrophulariiflora, Betula utilis, Rheum nobile, and Urtica hyperborean. Conclusion This research demonstrates the diversity of the types and functions of Yadong Tibetan traditional plant knowledge. Knowledge of edible and medicinal plants in this area is prominent, reflecting the ability to cope with the lack of fruits and vegetables and basic family medical care. There were exchanges between the traditional plant culture in the study area and its surroundings. With socioeconomic development, the commercial value of medicinal plants has increased, and locals are also seeking ways to adoptsustainable development to cope with the excessive consumption of plant resources.

Abstract Background Folk plant nomenclature is a part of knowledge of indigenous people often used to distinguish plant species. This study aimed to document the folk botanical nomenclature of the Yi people in Xiaoliangshan, Yunnan Province, which has not been systematically investigated to date. The results of this study will assist in conserving biodiversity and the language of the Yi people and will promote the transmission of ethnobotanical knowledge. Methods An ethnobotanical survey of plants used by the Yi people in Xiaoliangshan, Yunnan Province, was conducted from September 2019 to August 2021. Semi-structured interviews and key informant interviews were conducted to collect and document ethnobotanical information, which was then used to analyse the folk botanical nomenclature of the Yi people. In addition, the folk names of plants used by the Xiaoliangshan Yi community were compared with those of the Yi people living in the Daliangshan, where the environment is considerably different. Results In this study, 266 informants were interviewed, and the names of 228 indigenous plants were extracted from 3088 use reports. The nomenclature used by the local Yi people is based on plant characteristics, plant habitat, plant use, and the local culture. By comparing the folk plant names of the Yi people in Xiaoliangshan with those of the Yi people in Daliangshan, we found that the plant names of the two places have some similarities and also with their own unique characters. The important folk plant names of the Yi people in Xiaoliangshan usually have a monosyllable non-binomial structure or have and "divine attributes" in their names. Conclusions The Yi people in Xiaoliangshan have a rich and diverse knowledge of plant naming determined by cultural, and environmental factors. The botanical nomenclature of the Yi people has distinct rules and characteristics, and the plant naming directly includes important plants that they believe to be used and protected, which is of great significance to the protection of biodiversity.

Abstract Background Douyu Village, inhabited by the Lhoba people, is situated within the Eastern Himalayas, in southeastern Tibet, China. The village is located among high mountains and valleys, which feature complex terrain with cold and dry climates and distinctive vegetation types and species. The Lhoba people in this village are isolated from other groups in China. The Lhoba people have lived in this village since the 15th century and mainly depended on gathering, hunting, and swidden agriculture before the 1960s. Because they have a long history and live under extreme climatic, geographical, and ecological conditions, the Lhoba people in Douyu Village may have unique traditional knowledge about wild plants. Thus, this research aims to record the traditional botanical knowledge of the Lhoba people in Douyu. Methods An ethnobotanical study was conducted on the Lhoba people in Douyu Village in Longzi County, Tibet, China. Semi-structured interviews and group discussions with informed consent were used in the study. We interviewed 41 informants (14 key informants) between 18 and 75 years of age. All information was collected, organized, and compiled into “use reports” for quantitative analysis. The informant consensus factor (ICF) was used to determine the homogeneity of the informants’ knowledge of medicinal plants, while the cultural importance index (CI) was used to estimate the cultural importance of shared species. Results A total of 91 wild species (90 vascular plants and 1 fungus) belonging to 71 genera and 39 families utilized by the Lhoba people in Douyu were documented. Of these species, Pimpinella xizangense and Wikstroemia lungtzeensis are endemic to Longzi County, while Sinopodophyllum hexandrum and Paeonia ludlowii are endangered species in China. All habitats, from the field vegetation at the valley bottoms to the alpine shrubland and meadows, were used for plant collection, and the numbers of species of plants collected from the various vegetation types (except for fields) decreased with increasing altitude. Our study found that 55 species are edible plants and fungi, 29 species are medicinal plants, and 38 species are used for other purposes. Medicinal plants are used for 11 categories of diseases, among which diseases of blood-forming organs (ICF = 0.96) and gastrointestinal diseases (ICF = 0.95) exhibited the highest ICF values. Based on the CI values, the most important plants in this study area are Berberis xanthophloea, B. kongboensis, Sinopodophyllum hexandrum, Vicatia thibetica, and Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. gyantsensis. Moreover, a comparison of the wild plants used by Lhoba ethnic groups in three counties in China showed significant differences among these regions. Conclusions Our study demonstrates that the wild plants utilized by the Lhoba people in Douyu Village are highly diverse, at 90 plant and one fungal species, which reflects not only the number of species but also their diversified functions. The extreme climatic, geographical, and ecological conditions of Douyu within the high mountains and valleys of the Eastern Himalayas potentially affect the Lhoba people’s culture, including plant utilization practices, and contribute to the rich diversity of the wild plants used by the local people.

Abstract Background Wild edible plants (WEPs) are non-cultivated and non-domesticated plants used for food. WEPs provided food, nutrition, herbs and other plant products for people in underdeveloped areas, such as the Everest region, to maintain their daily lives. Chenthang Town is the only Sherpa ethnic township in Tibet, China. The core purpose of this research is to investigate, collect and record the WEPs and related local knowledge and functions within the Sherpa community. The ultimate goal is to answer the question of why Sherpa people choose these particular plants. Materials and methods The field study was carried out in the six Sherpa communities of Chenthang Township from September 2019 to August 2020. The WEPs and related local knowledge were collected through semistructured interviews and direct observations. The field work was performed with the assistance of local guides. During the field survey, we collected plant specimens based on the principle of one plant with one vernacular name. In this study, we utilised a use report (UR) and cultural importance index (CI) to evaluate the comprehensive utilization value of WEPs in the daily diet of Sherpa people. Results We interviewed 78 people individually who provided us with 1199 use reports. In total, we collected 84 WEPs belonging to 65 genera in 41 families. These species were identified as 78 distinct ethno-species by local people, and the vernacular name of each ethno-species was recorded. Then, these use reports were classified into six use categories. All these plants were native wild plants. In these plants, Arisaema utile, Sorbus cuspidata and Elaeagnus umbellata have been introduced into home gardens by local people. Following the description of the Sherpa people, we articulated a collection calendar for WEPs. The Sherpa collect WEPs throughout nearly the entire year, January and February being the exceptions. Conclusion The collection calendar of wild edible plants reflects the wisdom of the Sherpa in terms of survival. The Sherpa cleverly survive the food shortage periods by harnessing the phenology of different species. In general, WEPs can provide the Sherpa with seasonal carbohydrates, nutrition, healthcare supplements and other products and services necessary for survival, which is likely why the Sherpa choose these plants.

The beneficial effects of Lactobacillus plantarum LP104 was investigated on lipid level and the disordered gut microbiota of HFD feeding C57BL/6N mice. C57BL/6N mice were divided into three groups, ordinary diet (Control), high-fat diet (HFD) and HFD with LP104, respectively. After 8 weeks, LP104 alleviated the body weight, liver index, colon length, TC, TG, LDL, TNFα and LPS levels. High-throughput sequencing analysis has found that long-term HFD destroy microbial abundance and composition in the gut. Nevertheless, dietary supplementation of LP104 reduced the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroides and regulate the gut microbiota community structure positively. Meanwhile, the intake of LP104 also increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria Bifidobacterium in the cecum, which improves the intestinal flora disorder induced by a high-fat diet. The present study shows that LP104 supplementation improved the amelioration HFD induced hyperlipidemia by positively regulating intestinal microorganisms.

Abstract Background The undergraduate program of psychiatry has been widely established in recent years to improve the education and recruitment of psychiatrists in China. We aim to investigate the career choice of medical students majoring in psychiatry in China and the influential factors. Method This multicenter study was conducted in 26 medical schools in China from May to October of 2019. Participants included 4610 medical students majoring in psychiatry and 3857 medical students majoring in clinical medicine. Multivariable logistic regression was used to investigate the influential factors of students’ choices of psychiatry at matriculation and as a career. Results 44.08% of psychiatry majored students gave psychiatry as a first choice at matriculation, and 56.67% of them would choose psychiatry as a career, which was in sharp contrast to the proportion of clinical medicine majored students who would choose psychiatry as a career (0.69%). Personal interest (59.61%), suggestions from family members (27.96%), and experiencing mental problems (23.19%) were main reasons for choosing psychiatry major at matriculation. Personal interest (odds ratio [OR] = 2.12, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.87–2.40), experiencing a psychiatry clerkship (OR = 1.99, 95% CI = 1.28–3.08), being female (OR = 1.50, 95% CI = 1.30–1.68), experiencing mental problems (OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.28–1.56), and suggestions from family members (OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.08–1.46) correlated positively with students’ choice of psychiatry as career. Students who lacked psychiatry knowledge (OR = 0.49, 95% CI = 0.29–0.85) or chose psychiatry because of lower admission scores (OR = 0.80, 95% CI = 0.63–0.97) were less likely to choose psychiatry as a career. Conclusion More than half of psychiatry majored medical school students planned to choose psychiatry as their career, whereas very few students in the clinic medicine major would make this choice. Increasing students’ interest in psychiatry, strengthening psychiatry clerkships, and popularizing psychiatric knowledge are modifiable factors to increase the psychiatry career intention. The extent to which medical students’ attitudes toward psychiatry can be changed through medical school education and greater exposure to psychiatry will need further investigation.

Abstract Background Home garden is identified as a kind of small-scale land-use system which is used to manage and cultivate useful plants by local people, and home gardens can provide various plant products and services. Investigating home gardens was regarded as an effective way to understand the biodiversity-related local knowledge and culture of native people in Ethnobiology and Ethnoecology. Home garden is important in less developed and remote areas. The grand canyon of Yarlung Tsangpo is designed as one of the biodiversity hotspots of China, and it is one of the most remote regions of China, because of the rough traffic conditions. The aim of the present study is to collect, record, and document the plants and their local knowledge and functions in the local home gardens, then attempt to answer the question: “why local people selected these plants?” Material and methods The study area was in Beibeng Township of Motuo County in the grand canyon of Yarlung Tsangpo. Observation and semi-structure interviews with informed consent were used to collect data in field study. All information was collected and organized, then documented based on “ethno-species” as a fundamental unit. All of the information of local use and knowledge were organized as the list of “use-report” for quantitative analysis, and the local uses of plants were merged into 14 use categories. Frequency of citation (FC), relative frequency of citation (RFC), cultural importance index (CI), and cultural value index (CV) were used in quantitative analysis. Besides, the Jaccard Index was used to compare the similarity in plant species selection among different communities. Results A total of 78 home gardens in the 9 communities of Beibeng Township were visited, and 196 ethno-species were collected. These ethno-species were identified into 188 Botanical taxa. A total of 87 home garden owners as informants were interviewed in the present study, and they provided 625 use-reports to us. The top 5 important plants were Su-lan-tsao (Dendrobium nobile), Sa-ga (Zingiber officinale), Soe-lu (Capsicum annuum), Snying-pa (Citrus medica), and Kham-pu (Prunus persica), according to the quantitative analysis. The most citied use-category was “vegetable,” followed by “ornamental plant,” “medicine,” and “fruit.” The altitude might be the most important impact factor of the plant diversity and composition of home gardens, and the traffic conditions, local terrain, also impact the plant diversity and composition of home gardens. Conclusion In remote areas such as the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, the plants in home gardens are important sources of plant products such as foods, herbal medicines, and fibers to support daily lives. The local home gardens in Tsang-la communities had high diversity of plants, and these plants provided many functions and services to support daily lives of local people. Local plant knowledge, including the features, life forms, habits, habitats, and use values of plants, were the summary of the understanding of local people to their surrounding plant worlds. Local people selected appropriate plants to cultivate and manage in their home gardens under the guidance of the local plant knowledge. That is the answer to the question “why local people selected these plants?”

Background. Interest in the study of the optical and electrophysical properties of nanotubes is due to their properties such as the band gap depending on the symmetry of the nanotube structure and good electrical conductivity, which makes them promising materials for nanoelectronics. The most of the available methods for creating such structures involve the production of nanotubes in the form of whole arrays with a significant dispersion of their characteristic sizes. Therefore, the most important task is to study the effect of size dispersion on the optical properties of a nanotube beam. The purpose of this work is to study theoretically the influence of the dispersion of spiral nanotubes’ radius on the macroscopic quantum effects arising from the anisotropic transfer of the photon momentum to the electronic subsystem. Materials and methods. A cylindrical nanotube with infinitely thin walls was considered as a model. The spiral symmetry of the nanotube was described by means of an extended spiral perturbation modeled by the δ-potential. The calculation of the photon fascination EMFand the EMF arising due to the heating of the electron system by the Joule heat was performed in the quadrupole approximation taking into account the dispersion of the radii of the nanotubes. Results. A theoretical study of the dispersion influence of the spiral nanotubes’ characteristic dimensions on macroscopic quantum effects in a longitudinal magnetic field is carried out. An analytical formula is obtained for the photon fascination EMF in a standing electromagnetic wave taking into account the dispersion of characteristic dimensions in an array of spiral nanotubes. An analytical formula is obtained for the EMF arising due to the heating of the electron system by the Joule heat of the photon fascination current of electrons flowing through the nanotube in a longitudinal magnetic field, taking into account the dispersion of the characteristic dimensions of spiral nanotubes in the array. The dispersion influence of the characteristic dimensions of spiral nanotubes in an array on macroscopic quantum effects is investigated. Conclusions. It is shown that in real arrays of nanotubes, where the dispersion of their radius plays a significant role, the effect of suppression of the macroscopic quantum effect associated with the EMF of the photon drag of electrons in a standing electromagnetic wave is possible. It is shown that with an increase in the root-mean-square deviation, the EMF associated with the heating of the electron system by the Joule heat of the photon drag current flowing through the nanotube is suppressed, which is caused by a significant spread in the characteristic radius of spiral nanotubes.

Neutrophil elastase (NE) plays a pivotal role in inflammation. However, the mechanism underlying NE-mediated inflammation in obesity remains unclear. Here, we report that NE activates protease-activated receptor-2 (PAR2), stimulates actin filament (F-actin) formation, decreases intercellular junction molecule VE-cadherin expression, and increases the permeability of human arterial endothelial cells (hECs). NE also prompts degradation of VE-cadherin and its binding proteins p120- and β-catenins via MG132-sensitive proteasomes. NE stimulates phosphorylation of myosin light-chain (MLC) and its regulator myosin phosphatase target subunit-1 (MYPT1), a target of Rho kinase (ROCK). Inhibitors of PAR2 and ROCK prohibit NE-induced F-actin formation, MLC phosphorylation, and VE-cadherin reduction in hECs, and impede monocyte transmigration through hEC monolayer pretreated with either neutrophils or NE. Further, administration of an NE inhibitor GW311616A significantly attenuates vascular leakage, leukocyte infiltration, and the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in the white adipose tissue from high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. Likewise, NE-deficient mice are resistant to HFD-induced vascular leakage in the heart. Together, NE regulates actomyosin cytoskeleton activity and VE-cadherin expression by activating PAR2 signaling in the endothelial cells, leading to increased vascular permeability and leukocyte extravasation. Hence, inhibition of NE is a potential approach to mitigate vascular injury and leukocyte infiltration in obesity-related systemic inflammation.

Lactobacillus plantarum LP104 was isolated with excellent antioxidant properties from kimchi. In order to evaluate the role of LP104 in improving hyperlipidemia in high-fat-diet mice, C57BL/6N mice were randomly assigned into three groups treated with different diets: normal chow (Control), HFD, and HFD with L. plantarum LP104. After eight weeks, L. plantarum LP104 treatment significantly reduced HFD-induced body weight gain and the levels of serum or liver TC, TG, LDL, ALT, AST, LPS and TNF-α, and elevated liver HDL levels. The liver lipid accumulation was decreased in L. plantarum LP104 group. L. plantarum LP104 could activate the AMPK/Nrf2/CYP2E1 related pathway and regulate expressions of related proteins by using western blotting. Therefore, L. plantarum LP104 will improve hyperlipidemia, liver metabolic disorders, and liver oxidative stress response.

The effects of probiotic-fermented soymilk (fermented by mixture of Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus casei, and L. plantarum) on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hyperlipidemia and liver injury were examined. C57BL/6N mice were randomly assigned into four groups that were treated with different diets: normal chow (NC), HFD, HFD with probiotic-fermented soymilk and HFD with non-fermented soymilk. After treatment for 6 weeks, probiotic-fermented soymilk treatment significantly reduced HFD-induced body weight gain, hyperlipidemia, liver fat accumulation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. In addition, probiotic-fermented soymilk consumption significantly reduced the levels of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and liver tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) compared with the HFD treatment. Further, probiotic-fermented soymilk significantly increased the serum leptin level. In conclusion, probiotic-fermented soymilk reduced hyperlipidemia and liver injury induced by HFD. The role of probiotic-fermented soymilk may decrease the production of liver LPS, TNF-α, and oxidative stress and induce adipose leptin and triacylglycerol hydrolase (TGH) production.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients have difficulty in switching between obsessive thought and compulsive behavior, which may be related to the dysfunction of the salience network (SN). However, little is known about the changes in intra- and inter- intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC) of the SN in patients with OCD. In this study, we parceled the SN into 19 subregions and investigated iFC changes for each of these subregions in 40 drug-naïve patients with OCD and 40 healthy controls (HCs) using seed-based functional connectivity resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). We found that patients with OCD exhibited decreased iFC strength between subregions of the SN, as well as decreased inter-network connectivity between SN and DMN, and ECN. These findings highlight a specific alteration in iFC patterns associated with SN in patients with OCD and provide new insights into the dysfunctional brain organization of the SN in patients with OCD.

Abstract: The significant breakthrough of natural gas exploration in deep-seated volcanic rocks of Songliao Basin, China, demonstrates that the volcanic rocks as reservoirs can form natural gas accumulations where excellent source–reservoir–caprock assemblages exist. This paper reveals several features of volcanic gas accumulations: (1) Two types of gas reservoirs, including hydrocarbons and non-hydrocarbons, are developed; the former is organic and usually trapped in shallower volcanics associated with sub-deep-seated faults, while the latter is mainly inorganic and accumulated in deep-seated volcanics associated with large-scale deep-cut basement faults. (2) Lower Cretaceous Shahezi Formation coal series source rocks, Yingcheng Formation volcanics, and Denglouku Formation mudstone form good source–reservoir–seal associations that control the major volcanic plays. (3) Volcanic crater and eruptive facies spread along deep-seated faults, so discordogenic faults control the distribution of large-scale volcanic gas reservoirs. (4) Fracture zones, accompanied with large-scale faults, control the distribution of high-yield zones. (5) Effusive volcanic rocks in the deep parts of sags have huge thickness and touch extensively with source rocks, so the gas accumulation potential is promising if reservoirs exist. Evaluation techniques can be summarized in three steps: (1) Determining the distribution of volcanic rocks by joint inversion of gravitational, magnetic, and seismic data. (2) Predicting the distribution of volcanic reservoirs by multiple methodologies. (3) Predicting the distribution of gas-bearing volcanic rocks by integrated methods, including gas detention. Nitric oxide (NO) plays essential roles in many biotic and abiotic stresses in plant development procedures, including pollen tube growth. Here, effects of NO on cold stress inhibited pollen germination and tube growth in Camellia sinensis were investigated in vitro. The NO production, NO synthase (NOS)-like activity, cGMP content and proline (Pro) accumulation upon treatment with NO scavenger cPTIO, NOS inhibitor L-NNA, NO donor DEA NONOate, guanylate cyclase (GC) inhibitor ODQ or phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitor Viagra at 25°C (control) or 4°C were analyzed. Exposure to 4°C for 2 h reduced pollen germination and tube growth along with increase of NOS-like activity, NO production and cGMP content in pollen tubes. DEA NONOate treatment inhibited pollen germination and tube growth in a dose-dependent manner under control and reinforced the inhibition under cold stress, during which NO production and cGMP content promoted in pollen tubes. L-NNA and cPTIO markedly reduced the generation of NO induced by cold or NO donor along with partly reverse of cold- or NO donor-inhibited pollen germination and tube growth. Furthermore, ODQ reduced the cGMP content under cold stress and NO donor treatment in pollen tubes. Meanwhile, ODQ disrupted the reinforcement of NO donor on the inhibition of pollen germination and tube growth under cold condition. Additionally, Pro accumulation of pollen tubes was reduced by ODQ compared with that receiving NO donor under cold or control condition. Effects of cPTIO and L-NNA in improving cold-treated pollen germination and pollen tube growth could be lowered by Viagra. Moreover, the inhibitory effects of cPTIO and L-NNA on Pro accumulation were partly reversed by Viagra. These data suggest that NO production from NOS-like enzyme reaction decreased the cold-responsive pollen germination, inhibited tube growth and reduced Pro accumulation, partly via cGMP signaling pathway in C. sinensis.

Laccase activity secreted by Pleurotus eryngii Han 1787 and Lentinus edodes Han 1788 grown on six types of agroindustrial wastes was investigated. Maximum laccase activity of P. eryngii Han 1787 on Ulmus pumila, Juniperus formosana, Pinus tabuliformis, cottonseed shell, corncob, and leaf of corncob was nearly 5.77-fold, 2.37-fold, 2.78-fold, 2.81-fold, 11.53-fold, and 6.73-fold higher than that of L. edodes Han1788 on corresponding agroindustrial wastes. In general, the capacity of secreting laccase of P. eryngii Han 1787 was superior to that of L. edodes Han 1788. Furthermore, laccase activity of P. eryngii Han 1787 on the leaf of corncob, the corncob, Ulmus pumila, and Juniperus formosana was relatively stable during the whole fermentation process. Different fungi showed different preferences in different agroindustrial wastes to secret laccase on whole fermentation stage. The presence of leaf of corncob was useful for improving laccase activity of P. eryngii Han 1787, while L. edodes Han 1788 was more preferred to produce laccase along with the presence of Juniperus formosana. These results were preliminary conducive in laying the foundation for increasing industrial laccaseproducing strains and producing low-cost laccase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
