Mie resonances have recently attracted much attention in research on dielectric metasurfaces, owning to their enriched multipole resonances, negligible optical loss, and efficient light emitter integration. Although there is a rapid advancement in this field, some fundamental developments are still required to provide a simpler and more versatile paradigm for photoluminescence (PL) control. In this work, we proposed that an all-dielectric coherent metasurface can engineer the PL response by tuning the array size. Such PL manipulation is attributed to the collective Mie resonances that mediate the inter-unit interactions between unit elements and alter the PL intensity. Metasurfaces with different chip sizes are utilized to explore the array size effect on the collective Mie resonances, field enhancement, and Q-factor in TiO2 metasurfaces. Incorporating the all-dielectric coherent metasurface with fluorescent photon emitters, we performed the dependence of PL enhancement on array size, which achieves an enhancement factor of ∼10 at the central area of a 90 × 90 μm2 TiO2 metasurface array. These findings provide an additional degree of freedom to engineer the near-field confinement and enhancement, allowing one to manipulate incoherent photon emission and tune light–matter interaction at the nanoscale.

Background Reduction of lumbar spondylolisthesis during spinal fusion surgery is important for improving the fusion rate and restoring the sagittal alignment. Despite the variety of reduction methods, the fundamental mechanics of lumbar spondylolisthesis reduction remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the biomechanical behavior while performing spondylolisthesis reduction with the anterior and posterior lever reduction method. Methods We developed an L4–L5 spondylolisthesis model using sawbones. Two spine surgeons performed the simulated reduction with a customized Cobb elevator. The following data were collected: the torque and angular motion of Cobb, displacement of vertebral bodies, change of lordotic angle between L4 and L5, total axial force and torque applied on the model, and force received by adjacent disc. Results Less torque value (116 N-cm vs. 155 N-cm) and greater angular motion (53o vs. 38o) of Cobb elevator were observed in anterior lever reduction. Moreover, the total axial force received by the entire model was greater in the posterior lever method than that in the anterior lever method (40.8 N vs. 16.38 N). Besides, the displacement of both vertebral bodies was greater in the anterior lever method. Conclusions The anterior lever reduction is a more effort-saving method than the posterior lever reduction method. The existing evidence supports the biomechanical advantage of the anterior reduction method, which might be one of the contributing factors to successfully treating high-grade lumbar spondylolisthesis with short-segment instrumentation.

Spatial manipulation of a precise number of viruses for host cell infection is essential for the extensive studies of virus pathogenesis and evolution. Albeit optical tweezers have been advanced to the atomic level via optical cooling, it is still challenging to efficiently trap and manipulate arbitrary number of viruses in an aqueous environment, being restricted by insufficient strength of optical forces and a lack of multifunctional spatial manipulation techniques. Here, by employing the virus hopping and flexibility of moving the laser position, multifunctional virus manipulation with a large trapping area is demonstrated, enabling single or massive (a large quantity of) virus transporting, positioning, patterning, sorting, and concentrating. The enhanced optical forces are produced by the confinement of light in engineered arrays of nanocavities by fine tuning of the interference resonances, and this approach allows trapping and moving viruses down to 40 nm in size. The work paves the way to efficient and precise manipulation of either single or massive groups of viruses, opening a wide range of novel opportunities for virus pathogenesis and inhibitor development at the single-virus level. The relationship between quantitative anatomic parameters in MRI and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) before and after surgery in degenerative lumbar foraminal stenosis remains unknown. We included 58 patients who underwent transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) for single-level degenerative disc disease with foraminal stenosis between February 2013 and June 2020. PROs were evaluated using the visual analog scale (VAS) for back and leg pain, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D). The foraminal parameters assessed using preoperative MRI included foraminal height, posterior intervertebral disc height, superior and inferior foraminal width, and foraminal area. The correlation between foraminal parameters and PROs before operation, at 1 year follow-up, and change from baseline were assessed. The associations between the aforementioned parameters were examined using linear regression analysis. The analysis revealed that among these parameters, superior foraminal width was found to be significantly correlated with ODI and EQ-5D at the 1 year follow-up and with change in ODI and EQ-5D from baseline. The associations remained significant after adjustment for confounding factors including age, sex, body mass index, and duration of hospital stay. The results indicated that in degenerative lumbar foraminal stenosis, decreased superior foraminal width was associated with better improvement in disability and quality of life after TLIF.

Background Recent research has proposed a classification of spinopelvic stiffness according to pelvic spatial orientation for risk stratification in patients who undergo total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, the influence of global alignment was not investigated, and this study evaluated the effect of global balance (sagittal vertical axis [SVA]) on spinopelvic motion. Methods We conducted a retrospective review of consecutive primary THA patients. We measured SVA, spinopelvic parameters (pelvic tilt [PT], pelvic incidence, and sacral slope), thoracic kyphosis (TK), lumbar lordosis (LL), proximal femur angle (PFA), and cup version using functional radiographs of patients in the standing and upright sitting positions. Linear regression was performed to identify parameters related to global trunk alignment change (∆SVA). Spinopelvic stiffness was defined as PT position change Results One hundred twenty-four patients were analyzed (mean age: 65 years, 61% female). In univariate regression analysis, ∆TK, ∆LL, and ∆PFA were correlated to ∆SVA. In multivariate regression analysis, ΔLL (p p 2 = 0.558). Spinopelvic stiffness was observed in 40 patients (32%), including five (4%) with paradoxical motion (∆PT = − 3° ± 1°, p p = 0.017), and higher anterior trunk shift (∆SVA = 6.2 ± 2.0 cm, p = 0.003) from standing to sitting as compared to the stiffness group. Two of these five patients experienced dislocation events after THA. Conclusions The lumbosacral and hip motions were the major contributors to global alignment postural change. Paradoxical motion is a rare but dangerous clinical condition in THA that might be related to a disproportionally large trunk shift in the stiff lumbosacral spine causing excessive hip motion. In paradoxical motion, diminishing functional acetabular clearance during position change might pose the prosthesis at higher risk of impingement and instability than spinopelvic stiffness.

BackgroundA two-stage minimally invasive surgery (MIS) protocol with oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) combined with posterior instrumentation is becoming popular in the treatment of adult spinal deformities (ASDs) because of lower complication rates and less blood loss when compared with the open traditional posterior approach. The objective of this study is to determine the efficacy of correction and the causes of suboptimal correction in two-stage OLIF.MethodsThis retrospective study included 27 patients who underwent both two-stage and single-stage OLIF with posterior instrumentation for treatment of ASD. Patients treated with two-stage OLIF were sorted into Group A (Improved Lenke-Silva classification after the first-stage OLIF) and Group B (Unchanged Lenke-Silva classification after the first-stage operation) to evaluate the correction efficacy of OLIF in a two-stage MIS protocol. Statistical analyses were performed to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes. The causes of complications and suboptimal corrections (Group B) in patients treated with the two-stage MIS protocol were analyzed.ResultsAll 27 patient patients showed significant improvement (P < 0.05) in the visual analog scale, the Oswestry Disability Index, and EuroQol. A total of 14 patient were treated with the two-stage protocol, with ten patients included in group A and four patients with insufficient correction angles included in group B. The radiographic outcome of Group A showed significant corrections (P < 0.05) in pelvic tilt, pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis (PI-LL) mismatch, sagittal vertical axis, and max Cobb angles. In group B, surgical limitations of OLIF were the cause of unsatisfactory correction in two patients because the deformities involved the T-L junction, which was not accessible using the approach. Severe preoperative PI-LL mismatch (41°) and cage subsidence with an anterior endplate fracture were the cause of poor correction in two other patients.ConclusionOLIF can provide significant corrections that reduce the need for a Smith-Petersen osteotomy (SPO) or a pedicular subtraction osteotomy (PSO) for additional correction during posterior instrumentation. Deformities involving the T-spine or T-L junction, severe PI-LL mismatches, and cage subsidence are the possible causes of suboptimal corrections with OLIF using the two-stage protocol.

The electronic properties of aluminum-adsorbed graphenes enriched by multi-orbital hybridizations are investigated by using first-principles calculations. The enriched features include the quasi-rigid red shifts of the carbon-related energy bands, the Al-dominated valence and conduction bands, and enhanced density of states (DOS) near the Dirac cone. The Al- and alkali-induced high free carrier densities are almost the same. There exist certain important differences among the Al-, alkali- and halogen-adsorbed graphenes, such as, the buckled or planar graphene, the preserved or seriously distorted Dirac cone, the presence or absence of the adatom-dominated valence bands, the free electrons or holes, the degenerate or split spin-related states, and the split peaks in DOS. The similarities and differences come mainly from the diverse orbital hybridizations in adatom-C bonds, reflected in the atom-dominated bands, the spatial charge distributions and the orbital-projected DOS.

The electronic and optical properties of nonuniform bilayer graphene nanoribbons are worth investigating as they exhibit rich magnetic quantization. Based on our numerical results, their electronic and optical properties strongly depend on the competition between magnetic quantization, lateral confinement, and stacking configuration. The results of our calculations lead to four categories of magneto-electronic energy spectra, namely monolayer-like, bilayer-like, coexistent, and irregular quasi-Landau-level like. Various types of spectra described in this paper are mainly characterized by unusual spatial distributions of wave functions in the system under study. In our paper, we demonstrate that these unusual quantized modes lead to the appearance of such diverse magneto-optical spectra. Moreover, the investigation of the density of states in our model leads to the appearance of many prominent symmetric and weakly asymmetric peaks. The almost well-behaved quasi-Landau levels exhibit high-intensity peaks with specific selection rules, and the distorted energy subbands present numerous low-intensity peaks without any selection rules., arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1510.01889

The electronic properties of graphene oxides enriched by strong chemical bonding are investigated using first-principles calculations. They are very sensitive to the changes in the number of graphene layers, stacking configuration, and distribution of oxygen. The feature-rich electronic structures exhibit destruction or distortion of the Dirac cone, opening of a band gap, anisotropic energy dispersions, O- and (C,O)-dominated energy dispersions, and extra critical points. All of the few-layer graphene oxides are semi-metals except for the semiconducting monolayer ones. For the former, the distorted Dirac-cone structures and the O-dominated energy bands near the Fermi level are revealed simultaneously. The orbital-projected density of states (DOS) has many special structures mainly coming from a composite energy band, the parabolic and partially flat ones. The DOS and spatial charge distributions clearly indicate the critical orbital hybridizations in O-O, C-O and C-C bonds, being responsible for the diversified properties.

The genetic markers associated with economic traits have been widely explored for animal breeding. Among these markers, single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) are gradually becoming a prevalent and effective evaluation tool. Since SNPs only focus on the genetic sequences of interest, it thereby reduces the evaluation time and cost. Compared to traditional approaches, SNP genotyping techniques incorporate informative genetic background, improve the breeding prediction accuracy and acquiesce breeding quality on the farm. This article therefore reviews the typical procedures of animal breeding using SNPs and the current status of related techniques. The associated SNP information and genotyping techniques, including microarray and Lab-on-a-Chip based platforms, along with their potential are highlighted. Examples in pig and poultry with different SNP loci linked to high economic trait values are given. The recommendations for utilizing SNP genotyping in nimal breeding are summarized.

The feature-rich electronic and magnetic properties of fluorine-doped graphene nanoribbons are investigated by the first-principles calculations. They arise from the cooperative or competitive relations among the significant chemical bonds, finite-size quantum confinement and edge structure. There exist C-C, C-F, and F-F bonds with the multi-orbital hybridizations. Fluorine adatoms can create the p-type metals or the concentration- and distribution-dependent semiconductors, depending on whether the $\pi$ bonding is seriously suppressed by the top-site chemical bonding. Furthermore, five kinds of spin-dependent electronic and magnetic properties cover the non-magnetic and ferromagnetic metals, the non-magnetic semiconductors, and the anti-ferromagnetic semiconductors with/without the spin splitting. The diverse essential properties are clearly revealed in the spatial charge distribution, the spin density, and the orbital-projected density of states.

Proline accumulation is responsible for stress adaptation in many plants. To distinguish the involvement of two proline synthetic pathways, the virus induced gene silencing (VIGS) system that silenced the expression of genes encoding Δ(1)-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase (P5CS; EC:1.5.1.12) and ornithine-δ-aminotransferase (OAT; EC 2.6.1.13) was performed, separately or concomitantly, in four-week-old Nicotiana benthamiana. Leaf discs of VIGS-treated tobacco were subjected to the treatment of drought, abscisic acid (ABA), or polyethylene glycol (PEG). The treated leaf discs were then collected for the determination of mRNA, chlorophyll, proline and polyamine level. Under drought stress or PEG treatment, most proline accumulation was inhibited in P5CS-silenced plants and only a small portion was inhibited in OAT-silenced plants under drought stress and no inhibition was observed under PEG treatment. Under ABA treatment, proline accumulation was inhibited completely in P5CS-silenced plants but unaffected in OAT-silenced plants. The degradation of chlorophyll was enhanced in P5CS-silenced plants but retarded in OAT-silenced plants under PEG treatment. Under ABA treatment, the degradation of chlorophyll was unaffected in both P5CS-silenced and OAT-silenced plants. The increase of polyamine level was unaffected in P5CS-silenced plants but increased in OAT-silenced plants under PEG treatment. Under ABA treatment, the increase of polyamine level was unaffected in P5CS-silenced plants but the polyamine level was increased later in OAT-silenced plants. Therefore, P5CS plays a major role in proline accumulation under drought, PEG, or ABA treatment, while OAT plays a minor role in drought or PEG treatment and does not participate in ABA treatment. OAT appears to have a close relationship with the regulation of polyamine levels in PEG and ABA treatments.

This study was undertaken to establish for the first time an efficient regeneration and transformation system for Cucumis metuliferus line PI292190, which is the source of a well-defined resistant gene, Wmv, that provides resistance against Papaya ringspot virus type P (PRSV-P) and PRSV-W (formerly known as Watermelon mosaic virus 1, WMV-1). Different combinations of growth regulators were evaluated for the regeneration of cotyledon explants. Adventitious buds or shoot primordia were obtained within 3 to 4 weeks on regeneration medium. After shoot development, adventitious buds or shoot primordia were transferred to elongation medium for 3 to 4 weeks and these shoots were subcultured onto rooting medium for another 1 to 2 weeks. Under optimal culture conditions, a total of 7 to 10 weeks was necessary to obtain C. metuliferus plantlets from cotyledons. Furthermore, transgenic plants were successfully obtained using an Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation method as shown by polymerase chain reaction analysis and histochemical β-glucuronidase (GUS) assay. A total of nine transgenic plants were developed from 360 cotyledon explants, giving a transformation frequency of 2.5%.

Simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers are widely applied in studies of plant molecular genetics due to their abundance in the genome, codominant nature, high repeatability, and transferability in cross-species applications. To investigate the possibility of applying rice SSR markers in bamboo, we selected 120 rice SSR markers that are evenly distributed on rice chromosomes and assessed these for their transferability to 21 different bamboo species. A total of 4847 bands of 2196 alleles were obtained from 82 SSR markers that were able to amplify products in the bamboo genome; the transferability was 68.3%. Seven markers specifically amplified individual bamboo species and are consequently valuable markers for species identification. SSR markers located on rice chromosome 7 and 1 showed the highest and lowest transferability, respectively to the bamboo genome. SSR markers located on some regions of the rice chromosomes could not be amplified in bamboo, suggesting that regional divergence occurred between rice and bamboo during evolution. A dendrogram was constructed. The dendrogram classified bamboo species into two major groups which coincided with rhizome type, runner, and clumper. The results of this study demonstrate that rice SSR markers can be a valuable source of markers for those genomes lacking useful marker systems.

The geometric and electronic properties of passivated armchair graphene nanoribbons, enriched by strong chemical bonding between edge-carbons and various adatoms, are investigated by first-principle calculations. Adatom arrangements, bond lengths, charge distributions, and energy dispersions are dramatically changed by edge passivation. Elements with an atomic number of less than 20 are classified into three types depending on the optimal geometric structures: planar and non-planar structures, the latter of which are associated with specific arrangements and stacked configurations of adatoms. Especially, the nitrogen passivated nanoribbon is the most stable one with a heptagon–pentagon structure at the edges. The low-lying band structures are drastically varied, exhibiting non-monotonous energy dispersions and adatom-dominated bands. A relationship between energy gaps and ribbon widths no longer exists, and some adatoms further induce a semiconductor–metal transition. All the main characteristics are directly reflected in the density of states, revealing dip structures, plateaus, symmetric peaks, and square-root divergent asymmetric peaks.

The quality of feeder load distribution estimations will affect the switching schedules and the effectiveness of shunt compensation in distribution system operations. Accurate load distribution estimations are required in order to achieve the best schedule for maximizing the loss reduction. In this paper, a new feeder load distribution estimation method that removes the assumption of coincident peak load made in previous methods is proposed. Considering the non‐conforming load effect, the new method uses data from load surveys and the customer information system to enhance the quality of the estimations. A dynamic programming algorithm is used to investigate the effects of time varying load distribution estimations on the switched capacitor schedules. Test results using actual measurement data have indicated that the proposed method could provide better estimations than the previous methods.

A better understanding of virus resistance mechanisms can offer more effective strategies to control virus diseases. Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV), Potyviridae, causes severe economical losses in papaya and cucurbit production worldwide. However, no resistance gene against PRSV has been identified to date. This study aimed to identify candidate PRSV resistance genes using cDNA-AFLP analysis and offered an open architecture and transcriptomic method to study those transcripts differentially expressed after virus inoculation. The whole genome expression profile of Cucumis metuliferus inoculated with PRSV was generated using cDNA-amplified fragment length polymorphism (cDNA-AFLP) method. Transcript derived fragments (TDFs) identified from the resistant line PI 292190 may represent genes involved in the mechanism of PRSV resistance. C. metuliferus susceptible Acc. 2459 and resistant PI 292190 lines were inoculated with PRSV and subsequently total RNA was isolated for cDNA-AFLP analysis. More than 400 TDFs were expressed specifically in resistant line PI 292190. A total of 116 TDFs were cloned and their expression patterns and putative functions in the PRSV-resistance mechanism were further characterized. Subsequently, 28 out of 116 candidates which showed two-fold higher expression levels in resistant PI 292190 than those in susceptible Acc. 2459 after virus inoculation were selected from the reverse northern blot and bioinformatic analysis. Furthermore, the time point expression profiles of these candidates by northern blot analysis suggested that they might play roles in resistance against PRSV and could potentially provide valuable information for controlling PRSV disease in the future.
