Background Post-acute coronary syndrome (ACS) depression is a common but not well understood complication experienced by ACS patients. Research on the effectiveness of various therapies remains limited. Hence, we sought to conduct a network meta-analysis to assess the efficacy of different interventions for post-ACS depression in improving patient outcomes. Methods and findings Three electronic databases were searched for randomised controlled trials describing different depression treatment modalities in post-ACS patients. Each article was screened based on inclusion criteria and relevant data were extracted. A bivariate analysis and a network meta-analysis was performed using risk ratios (RR) and standardized mean differences (SMD) for binary and continuous outcomes, respectively. A total of 30 articles were included in our analysis. Compared to standard care, psychosocial therapy was associated with the greatest reduction in depression scores (SMD:-1.21, 95% CI: -1.81 to -0.61, p Conclusion This network meta-analysis found that the treatment effect of the various psychological modalities on depression severity were similar. Future trials on psychological interventions assessing clinical outcomes and improvement in adherence to ACS-specific interventions are needed.

Several studies have documented a relationship between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and structural heart disease, particularly diastolic function. This meta-analysis will be the first to examine the echocardiographic-derived cardiac function and structural characteristics in NAFLD patients, and its association with liver disease severity and metabolic profile.Medline and Embase were searched and pairwise meta-analysis was conducted in DerSimonian and Laird to obtain the odds ratio (OR) and mean difference (MD) for dichotomous and continuous variables, respectively, to compare the effects of NAFLD on the echocardiography parameters.Forty-one articles involving 33,891 patients underwent echocardiography. NAFLD patients had worse systolic indices with lower ejection fraction (EF, MD: - 0.693; 95% CI: - 1.112 to - 0.274; p = 0.001), and worse diastolic indices with higher E/e' (MD: 1.575; 95% CI: 0.924 to 2.227; p 0.001) compared to non-NAFLD patients. NAFLD patients displayed increased left ventricular mass (LVM, MD: 34.484; 95% CI: 26.236 to 42.732; p 0.001) and epicardial adipose thickness (EAT, MD: 0.1343; 95% CI: 0.055 to 0.214; p = 0.001). An increased severity of NAFLD was associated with worse diastolic indices (decreased E/A ratio, p = 0.007), but not with systolic indices.NAFLD is associated with impaired systolic and diastolic function with changes in cardiac structure. Concomitant metabolic risk factors and liver disease severity are independently associated with worsening systolic and diastolic function.

A highly specific and sensitive proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) method has been developed for the quantification of ephedrine alkaloid derivatives in Ephedra herbal commercial prescriptions. At the region of δ 4.0 to 5.0 ppm in the 1H NMR spectrum, the characteristic signals are separated well from each other, and six analogues in total, methylephedrine (ME), ephedrine (EP), norephedrine (NE), norpseudoephedrine (NP), pseudoephedrine (PE), and methylpseudoephedrine (MP) could be identified. The quantities of these compounds are calculated by the relative ratio of the integral values of the target peak for each compound to the known concentrations of the internal standard anthracene. The present method allows for a rapid and simple quantification of ephedrine alkaloid derivatives in Ephedra-related commercial prescriptions without any preliminary purification steps and standard compounds, and accordingly it can be a powerful tool to verify different Ephedra species. In comparison to conventional chromatographic methods, the advantages of this method include the fact that no standard compounds are required, the quantification can be directly performed on the crude extracts, a better selectivity for various ephedrine alkaloid derivatives, and the fact that a very significant time-gain may be achieved.

Cordyceps militaris has been widely studied for its various pharmacological activities such as antitumor, anti-inflammation, and immune regulation. The binding of an allergen to IgE-sensitized mast cells in nasal mucosa triggers allergic rhinitis. We found that oral administration of 300 mg/kg of the ethanol extract prepared from silkworm pupa-cultivated Cordyceps militaris fruiting bodies significantly alleviated the symptoms of ovalbumin-induced allergic rhinitis in mice, including sneeze/scratch, mast cell activation, eosinophil infiltration, and Syk activation. The treatment of ethanol extract significantly suppressed the release of β-hexosaminidase (a degranulation marker) and mRNA expression levels of various cytokines, including IL-3, IL-10, and IL-13 in activated RBL2H3 cells. The ethanol extract and β-sitostenone, which was purified from the extract, could respectively reduce the Ca2+ ion mobilization in activated RBL-2H3 cells. Furthermore, results collected from western immunoblotting demonstrated that ethanol extract significantly retarded Ca2+ ion mobilization-initiated signaling cascade, which provoked the expression of various allergic cytokines. Also, the extract incubation interfered with P38 as well as NF-kB activation and Nrf-2 translocation. Our study suggested that ethanol extract possessed some natural constituents which could inhibit immediate degranulation and de novo synthesis of allergic cytokines via inhibition of Ca2+ ion mobilization in mast cells in the nasal mucosa of allergic rhinitis mice.

Objective Kalanchoe hybrida (Crassulaceae) is naturalized throughout all the island of Taiwan in China. The preliminary bioassay-guided fractionation of the crude extract of K. hybrida exhibited that the chloroform and n-butanol fractions possessed potent cytotoxicity against MCF-7, NCI-H460, and SF-268 tumor cell lines at 50 µg/mL concentration. Therefore, K. hybrida was selected as a target and the chemical constituents from the chloroform and n-butanol fractions of the crude extracts of K. hybrida were identified. The potential constituents were examined for their cytotoxicity against the tumor cell lines. Methods A combination of conventional chromatographic techniques was performed on the crude extract of K. hybrida. The chemical structures of the purified constituents were identified on the basis of spectroscopic and spectrometric analysis. Results The purification results had led to the characterization of totally 37 compounds. The isolated compounds 1, 2, and 4–12 were examined for their cytotoxicity in vitro, and bufadienolides 4–8 and flavonol glycoside 11 displayed significant cytotoxicity towards all the tested tumor cell lines among these tested compounds. Conclusion The results indicated that these principles should be responsible for the bioactivity of corresponding partial fractions. The potential constituents could be further investigated to explore the new natural lead drugs.

Twenty-one chalcones were prepared via aldol condensation and subsequent reduction of these compound led to the corresponding dihydrochalcone and 1,3-diphenylpropane derivatives. The synthetic products were examined for their effects on NO inhibition in LPS-activated mouse peritoneal macrophages. Among the tested compounds, a 1,3-diarylpropane analog, 2-(3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)propyl)-5-methoxyphenol (3p), displayed the most significant inhibitory effects against NO production. To investigate the mechanism of action, the effects of 3p on iNOS and COX-2 protein expression were studied by immunoblot. The results concluded that 3p is capable of inhibiting iNOS expression in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells via attenuation of NF-κB signaling by ERK, p38, and JNK.

Five new acyclic amides, clausenalansamides C-G (1-5), clausenaline G (6) and (±)-5-(4-methylphenyl)-γ-valerolactone (7) reported from the natural source for the first time, were characterized from the leaves of Clausena lansium. Their structures were established by spectroscopic and spectrometric methods, and the absolute configurations of new compounds 1-5 were determined by electronic circular dichroism and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Eighteen compounds were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity and only imperatorin (11) and wampetin (12) displayed significant inhibition of fMLP/CB-induced superoxide anion generation with IC50 values of 1.7 ± 0.3 and 6.8 ± 1.1 μM, respectively.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) fruit has been demonstrated to have the inhibitory activities to various tumors. In this study, we try to uncover the molecular mechanism underlying the inhibitory capability of Taiwanese local pomegranate fruit to urinary bladder urothelial carcinoma. The results collected from the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay indicated that the ethanol extract of pomegranate peel exhibited better inhibitory activity to human urinary bladder urothelial carcinoma T24 and J82 cells than that of pulp. Furthermore, the ethylacetate layer of peel ethanol extract was observed to have the best inhibitory activity against urinary bladder urothelial carcinoma cells. One of the eight fractions (PEPE2 fraction) collected from the ethylacetate layer with Diaion HP-20 column chromatography demonstrated the highest inhibitory activity in urinary bladder urothelial carcinoma cells. The results of the flow cytometry and apoptotic pathway studies suggested that the inhibitory activity of PEPE2 fraction were attributed to the UBUC cell apoptosis. To confirm the above results, our results of xenograft-induced bladder tumor in nude mice showed that the oral consumption of the ethylacetate layer (2, 5, 10 and 100 mg/kg) could decrease the volume and weight of T24 tumors and caused the apoptosis in the xenografted tumors, which was observed by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick end-labeling assay. This study provided the likelihood that the traditionally non-edible pomegranate peel waste is re-utilized to make an affordable and promising chemopreventive product to prevent UBUC incidence or recurrence.

Cordyceps militaris has been widely used as an herbal drug and tonic food in East Asia and has also been recently studied in the West because of its various pharmacological activities such as antitumoral, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. In this study, we examined the molecular mechanism underlying the anti-allergic activity of ethanol extract prepared from silkworm pupa-cultivated Cordyceps militaris fruit bodies in activated mast cells. Our results showed that ethanol extract treatment significantly inhibited the release of [Formula: see text]-hexosaminidase (a degranulation marker) and mRNA levels of tumor necrosis factor-[Formula: see text] as well as interleukin-4 in RBL-2H3 cells. The cells were sensitized with 2,4-dinitrophenol specific IgE and then stimulated with human serum albumin conjugated with 2,4-dinitrophenol. Oral administration of 300[Formula: see text]mg/kg ethanol extract significantly ameliorated IgE-induced allergic reaction in mice with passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. Western immunoblotting results demonstrated that ethanol extract incubation significantly inhibited Syk/PI3K/MEKK4/JNK/c-jun biochemical cascade in activated RBL-2H3 cells, which activated the expression of various allergic cytokines. In addition, it suppressed Erk activation and PLC[Formula: see text] evocation, which would respectively evoke the synthesis of lipid mediators and Ca[Formula: see text] mobilization to induce degranulation in stimulated RBL-2H3 cells. A compound, identified as [Formula: see text]-sitostenone, was shown to inhibit [Formula: see text]–hexosaminidase secretion from activated mast cells. Our study demonstrated that ethanol extract contained the ingredients, which could inhibit immediate degranulation and de novo synthesis of allergic lipid mediators and cytokines in activated mast cells.

Phytochemical investigation of the roots and stems of Illigera luzonensis afforded two new aporphine alkaloids (1) and (2), one new bisdehydroaporphine alkaloid (3), and one new benzenoid (4), along with 28 known structures. The structures of new compounds were elucidated by spectral and MS analysis. Among the isolated compounds, (1) and (4–13) were subjected into the examination for their inhibitory effects on the aggregation of washed rabbit platelets.

Phytochemical investigation of the heartwood of Michelia compressa afforded forty-four compounds, which were identified by comparison of experimental and literature analytical and spectroscopic data. Some compounds were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory and anticancer bioactivities. The result showed that soemerine (1) and cyathisterol (2) exhibited significant nitric oxide (NO) inhibition, with IC50 values of 8.5 ± 0.3 and 9.6 ± 0.5 µg/mL, respectively. In addition, liriodenine (3) and oliveroline (4) exhibited cytotoxicity to human nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC-TW01), non-small cell lung carcinoma (NCI-H226), T cell leukemia (Jurkat), renal carcinoma (A498), lung carcinoma (A549) and fibrosarcoma (HT1080) cell lines with IC50 values in the range of 15.7–3.68 μM.

Fifty-five compounds were isolated from the fresh stems of Cissus assamica, including 14 benzenoids, 11 triterpenes, nine steroids, five tocopherols, five chlorophylls, four flavonoids, two benzoquinones, two tannins, and three other compounds. Their structures were constructed by 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectral data, and were also identified by a comparison of their spectral data with those reported in the literature. Among these isolates, 1,2-bis-(5--tocopheryl) ethane (51) was reported for the first time from natural sources. Some purified compounds were examined for their anti-inflammatory and anticancer bioactivities. The results indicated that betulinic acid (16) exhibited strong inhibition of superoxide anion generation with IC50 value of 0.2 &plusmn, 0.1 &mu, M, while betulinic acid (16) and pheophytin-a (47) inhibited elastase release with IC50 value of 2.7 &plusmn, 0.3 and 5.3 &plusmn, 1.0 &mu, M, respectively. In addition, betulinic acid (16) and epi-glut-5(6)-en-ol (18) exhibited potential cytotoxicity to non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NCI-H226) and colon cancer (HCT-116) cell lines with IC50 values in the range of 1.6 to 9.1 &mu, M.

Three novel sesquiterpenes, phellilins A–C (1–3), were isolated from the ethanol extract of the cultured mycelium of Phellinus linteus. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis. Some of the compounds showed weak inhibitory activity on superoxide anion generation and elastase release.

Phytochemical investigation of the whole plants of Andrographis echioides afforded two new 2'-oxygenated flavonoids (1) and (2), two new phenyl glycosides (3) and (4), along with 37 known structures. The structures of new compounds were elucidated by spectral analysis and chemical transformation studies. Among the isolated compounds, (1–2) and (6–19) were subjected into the examination for their iNOS inhibitory bioactivity. The structure-activity relationships of the flavonoids for their inhibition of NO production were also discussed.

Bioassay-guided investigation of the anti-inflammatory principles from the stem and root barks of Citrus medica L. var. sarcodactylis SWINGLE has led to the isolation of a new coumarin, namely citrumedin-B (1) and thirty known compounds. The anti-inflammatory components were xanthyletin (2), nordentatin (3), atalantoflavon (4) and lonchocarpol A (5) which displayed potent nitric oxide (NO)-reducing activity in microglial cells. The structure of this new compound was completely elucidated using a combination of 2D NMR techniques (correlation spectroscopy (COSY), nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY), heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence (HMQC) and heteronuclear multiple bond connectivity (HMBC)) and HR-electrospray ionization (ESI)-MS analyses. The known compounds were identified by comparison of their spectroscopic and physical data with those reported in the literature. These results can be inferred from the treatment of allergic response and inflammatory properties of Citrus medica L. var. sarcodactylis SWINGLE in traditional Chinese medicine.

Three new benzenoid compounds, namely cryptamygin-A, -B and -C together with eleven known compounds were isolated from the stem bark of Cryptocarya amygadalina. Their structures were elucidated by spectral analysis. The synthesis of cryptamygin-A is also described.

Eight new carbazole alkaloids, claulamines C (1), D (2), and E (5) and clausenalines B-F (3, 4, 6-8), four new coumarins, clausemarins A-D (9-12), and 43 known compounds were isolated from the roots of Clausena lansium. The structures of the new compounds were established on the basis of 2D-NMR spectroscopic analysis, and their absolute configurations were established from their ECD spectra. The configuration of wampetin was revised as E using a NOESY experiment. Most of the isolated compounds were evaluated for their potential anti-inflammatory activity. The results showed that compounds 9, 13-18, and 20-22 exhibited strong inhibition of superoxide anion generation with IC50 values ranging from 1.9 to 8.4 μM, while compounds 18, 19, and 21 inhibited elastase release with IC50 values in the range from 2.0 to 6.9 μM.

Continuing our investigation on the bioactive compounds from the plant of the Aristolochia genus in Taiwan, we isolated one new sesquiterpene, aristololide, from the stem and roots of A. elegans, eleven known compounds from the fruits of A. elegans and nine known compounds from the fresh leaves of A. zollingeriana. Their structures were elucidated according to the 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analyses or by comparison with literature values.

Two new sesquiterpenes, madolin-T (1), madolin-V (2) together with 14 known compounds were isolated from the leaves of Aristolochia mollissima. Their structures were determined by spectral analysis.

The chemical constituents isolated from every stage of the Taiwanese swallowtail butterfly, Pachliopta aristolochiae interpositus, were studied and compared with the constituents of the insect feeding plant, A. cucurbitifolia. Two aristolochic acid derivatives (1 and 4) and three aristolactam analogues (5, 6, and 7) were isolated from the larval osmeterial fluid and larvae of the insect. In addition, four purines (2, 3, 13, and 14), one indole alkaloid (11), one steroid (10), two benzenoids (8 and 9) and allantoin (12) were also isolated from the insect. Among these compounds, aristolochic acid -I (AA-I, 1) was detected in all life stages of the insect, especially in the larval osmeterial fluid. The studies confirm that the toxic AAs are used as larval feeding stimulants and deterrent allomones against birds.

Four new compounds, three phenanthrene derivatives, aristolochic acid-III methyl ester (1), cepharanone C (2), and sodium 7-hydroxyl-8-methoxyaristolate (3), and the benzoate derivative, sodium 3,4-dimethoxybenzoate (4), together with 53 known compounds were isolated and characterized from the fresh root and stem of Aristolochia cucurbitifolia. Their structures were elucidated by spectral analyses and chemical transformations. The cytotoxicity and antiplatelet activity of the isolated compounds are also discussed.

Four new glycosides, namely mudanpiosides-G, -H, -I and mudanoside-A together with three known compounds, gallic acid, adenosine and p-hydroxybenzoic acid were isolated from the root bark of Paeonia suffruticosa. Their structures have been determined on the basis of spectral evidence.

Three novel skeleton sesquiterpenes, namely, madolin-F (1), -G (2a), and -H (3), were isolated and characterised from the fresh roots and stems of Aristolochia heterophylla. Madolin-F belongs to a novel skeleton, normaaliane type. Madolin-G and -H were constructed from three- and eleven-membered rings and named madolin type.

Eight new phenylalkynes, capillaridins A-H, together with three known compounds, capillin, capillene and O-methoxycapillene, were isolated and identified from the aerial parts of Artemisia capillaris.

Investigation of the root and stem of Aristolochia cucurbitafolia Hayata resulted in the isolation of seven sesquiterpenes, five of which are new compounds, namely, madolins A (1), B (2), C (3), D (4), and E (5), together with two known sesquiterpenes, aristolactone and manshurolide. Their structures were elucidated by spectral methods.

Investigation of the leaves, branch, stem and root bark of Gonocaryum calleryanum resulted in the isolation of a new secoiridoid glycoside, gonocaryoside E, together with 14 known compounds. Their structures were elucidated by spectral analysis and chemical transformation. Gonocaryoside E was shown to be a derivative of kingiside in which the lactone ring was open, and with the 8-hydroxy group esterified with tiglic acid. Alkaline hydrolysis of these secoiridoids is discussed.

Two new sodium salts of aristolochic acids: sodium aristolochate-II and -IVa, together with ten known compounds: sodium aristolochate-I, sodium aristolochate-C, aristolactam, aristolactam-N-β-D-glucoside, cepharadione-A, 3,5-pyridinedicarboxamide, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, trans-methyl p-coumarate, 6-hydroxy sitost-4-en-3-one, β-sitosterone and β-sitosterol, and stigmasterol mixture were isolated from the fresh flowers and fruits of Aristolochia zollingeriatia. Their structures were deterimined by spectral and chemical methods. IR and 1H NMR methods to distinguish aristolochic acid from its salt are discussed.

Reinvestigation of the root of Rhinacanthus nasutus afforded, in addition to rhinacanthin-A to -D reported previously, two new dimethyldihydropyranonaphthoquinone esters (5, 6) and eight new 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone esters (7-14) were isolated. The stereochemistry of rhinacanthin-A was determined as the R configuration. Compounds rhinacanthin-G to -N, belong to a class of 2-hydroxy-3-(3-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylpropyl)-1,4-naphthoquinone esters, and so far have been isolated only in this plant. Their biosynthesis is also discussed.

Two new tetranortriterpenoids, severinolide and cycloseverinolide, together with four known compounds, were isolated and characterized from the root bark of Severinia buxifblia. A new phytoecdysteroid, namely ajugalide-E (1), together with twenty five known compounds were isolated from Ajuga taiwanensis collected from Tainan, Taiwan. Their structures were determined by spectral analysis including high resolution one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy.

A novel miniature inverted-F antenna for 2.4/5GHz dual-band WLAN applications in a tablet computer is presented. This antenna is composed of three radiating strips and a shorting strip, which occupies an area of 13(L)×6(W)mm2 to be mounted along the side edge of the panel. Good performance for the WLAN applications has been obtained.

Investigation of the root of Cinnamomum philippinense resulted in the isolation of a new lignan, cinnamophilin, together with three known compounds, meso-dihydroguaiaretic acid, (+)-guaiacin and vallinic acid. Their structures were elucidated by spectral analysis. Cinnamophilin and its derivatives showed significant antiplatelet aggregation activity and vasorelaxing efrect. Furthermore, it displayed antioxidative activity equivalent to α-tocopherol.

Ajuga taiwanensis is widely used for the treatment of hepatitis and hepatoma in Taiwanese folk medicine. However, its bioactive components and mechanism of action are unclear. Herein, ajugalide-B (ATMA), a neoclerodane diterpenoid isolated from Ajuga taiwanensis, is reported to exhibit high anti-proliferative activity against tumor cell lines from various tissues. These results demonstrate that ATMA disrupts the focal adhesion complex by decreasing phosphorylation of paxillin and focal adhesion kinase (FAK). As a result, anoikis, a specific type of apoptosis caused by detachment of cells, is triggered by activation of caspase-8 in A549 cells. Furthermore, ATMA also blocks anchorage-independent growth and cell migration and, therefore, ATMA may serve as a lead compound for the developing of anti-cancer therapeuties with anoikis-inducing properties.
