Strain can significantly affect the electronic structure and functional properties of dilute magnetic semiconductors. As a wide bandgap transparent semiconductor, doped In2O3 has also received extensive attention for the modulation of physical properties by lattice strain due to its excellent functional properties. Here, we epitaxially grew the Cr:In2O3 thin film on the (111)-oriented 0.7Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.3PbTiO3 (PMN–PT) ferroelectric single-crystal substrate. By applying an electric field to PMN–PT, multiple reversible and nonvolatile resistance states can be achieved at room temperature. Utilizing in situ XRD, different strain states corresponding to different resistance states induced by the ferroelastic domain switching of the PMN–PT were characterized. Based on first-principles calculations, the influence of lattice strain on the resistivity of the Cr:In2O3 was discussed. These results offer a route for the design of multiple-valued nonvolatile memory devices and multiple functional magneto-electric devices based on dilute magnetic semiconductors. Acetaminophen is the most common over-the-counter pain and fever medication used by pregnant women. While European studies suggest acetaminophen exposure in pregnancy could affect childhood asthma development, findings are less consistent in other populations. We evaluated whether maternal prenatal acetaminophen use is associated with childhood asthmatic symptoms (asthma diagnosis, wheeze, dry cough) in a Los Angeles cohort of 1201 singleton births. We estimated risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for childhood asthmatic outcomes according to prenatal acetaminophen exposure. Effect modification by maternal race/ethnicity and psychosocial stress during pregnancy was evaluated. The risks for asthma diagnosis (RR = 1.39, 95% CI 0.96, 2.00), wheezing (RR = 1.25, 95% CI 1.01, 1.54) and dry cough (RR =1.35, 95% CI 1.06, 1.73) were higher in children born to mothers who ever used acetaminophen during pregnancy compared with non-users. Black/African American and Asian/Pacific Islander children showed a greater than two-fold risk for asthma diagnosis and wheezing associated with the exposure. High maternal psychosocial stress also modified the exposure-outcome relationships. Acetaminophen exposure during pregnancy was associated with childhood asthmatic symptoms among vulnerable subgroups in this cohort. A larger study that assessed prenatal acetaminophen exposure with other social/environmental stressors and clinically confirmed outcomes is needed.

Several studies have reported associations between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and behavioral outcomes in young children. We aimed to evaluate the associations of prenatal and postnatal exposures to acetaminophen with behavioral problems in children at age 11 years, using behavioral measures reported by parents and children. We studied 40,934 mother-child pairs from the Danish National Birth Cohort enrolled during 1996-2002. Parent-reported and child-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) responses were collected during the 11-year follow-up. We estimated risk ratios for behavioral problems including total difficulties as well as internalizing or externalizing behaviors following prenatal (during pregnancy) or postnatal (within the first 18 months after birth) acetaminophen exposure. Parent-reported and child-reported SDQ scores were moderately correlated; higher for externalizing (r = 0.59) than internalizing (r = 0.49) behaviors. Prenatal acetaminophen exposure was associated with 10%-40% higher risks for total difficulties and internalizing and externalizing problems based on parent- or child-reported SDQ, with the association being stronger for greater cumulative weeks of acetaminophen use. Postnatal exposure was associated with 16%-19% higher risks for parent-reported internalizing behaviors, but the associations were weak or null for child-reported scores except for prosocial behavior. Our study corroborates published associations between prenatal exposures to acetaminophen and behavioral problems and extends the literature to early adolescence.

To predict the role of the MsICE gene family in the response to abiotic stress, in this study, bioinformatics analysis and real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR were performed. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is one of the most economically valuable crops globally. Inducer of CBF expression (ICE), which is part of the basic helix–loop–helix (bHLH) transcription factor (TF) family, acts as a key regulator of cold tolerance. Despite this, there is little information available about ICE genes in alfalfa. Therefore, we studied the function of ICE TFs in alfalfa. We identified 11 MsICE genes from the alfalfa genome and classified them into two groups. Analysis of the protein motif and gene structure revealed relatively high conservation among subgroups of the tightly clustered MsICE genes. Through synteny analysis, we detected duplication events in the MsICE gene family, suggesting that the ICE gene family was formed through fragment duplications. All the MsICE proteins were located in the nucleus according to subcellular localization predictions. The promoter cis-regulatory elements of MsICE genes are largely involved in light (Box 4), hormone (ABRE), and stress (MYB) responses. The MsICE01/MsICE07/MsICE09/MsICE10/MsICE11 genes contained MYB- and MYC-binding motifs, indicating an association with abiotic stress. The specific expression patterns of MsICE genes in leaves were revealed by examining their expression patterns in different tissues. These findings suggest that these genes may sense external environmental changes through leaves. Abiotic stress can cause striking upregulation of MsICE07 (PCA score: −4.03) and MsICE10 (PCA score: −4.05) expression. In this study, candidate genes associated with cold stress were identified, and subsequent molecular biological analyses allowed elucidation of the biological functions of these genes in alfalfa. We analyze whole-genome sequencing data from 141,431 Chinese women generated for non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT). We use these data to characterize the population genetic structure and to investigate genetic associations with maternal and infectious traits. We show that the present day distribution of alleles is a function of both ancient migration and very recent population movements. We reveal novel phenotype-genotype associations, including several replicated associations with height and BMI, an association between maternal age and EMB, and between twin pregnancy and NRG1. Finally, we identify a unique pattern of circulating viral DNA in plasma with high prevalence of hepatitis B and other clinically relevant maternal infections. A GWAS for viral infections identifies an exceptionally strong association between integrated herpesvirus 6 and MOV10L1, which affects piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA) processing and PIWI protein function. These findings demonstrate the great value and potential of accumulating NIPT data for worldwide medical and genetic analyses.
