Hands-on experimental experience with quantum systems in the undergraduate physics curriculum provides students with a deeper understanding of quantum physics and equips them for the fast-growing quantum science industry. Here we present an experimental apparatus for performing quantum experiments with single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. This apparatus is capable of basic experiments such as single-qubit initialization, rotation, and measurement, as well as more advanced experiments investigating electron-nuclear spin interactions. We describe the basic physics of the NV center and give examples of potential experiments that can be performed with this apparatus. We also discuss the options and inherent trade-offs associated with the choice of diamond samples and hardware. The apparatus described here enables students to write their own experimental control and data analysis software from scratch all within a single semester of a typical lab course, as well as to inspect the optical components and inner workings of the apparatus. We hope that this work can serve as a standalone resource for any institution that would like to integrate a quantum instructional lab into its undergraduate physics and engineering curriculum.

Dynamic critical fluctuations in magnetic materials encode important information about magnetic ordering in the associated critical exponents. Using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, we implement $T_2$ (spin-decoherence) noise magnetometry to study critical dynamics in a 2D Van der Waals magnet CrSBr. By analyzing NV decoherence on time scales approaching the characteristic correlation time $\tau_c$ of critical fluctuations, we extract the critical exponent $\nu$ for the correlation length. Our result deviates from the Ising prediction and highlights the role of long-range dipolar interactions in 2D CrSBr. Furthermore, analyzing the divergence of the correlation length suggests the possibility of 2D-XY criticality in CrSBr in a temperature window near $T_C$ where static magnetic domains are absent. Nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond are a promising platform for nanoscale nuclear magnetic resonance sensing. Despite significant progress towards using NV centers to detect and localize nuclear spins down to the single spin level, NV-based spectroscopy of individual, intact, arbitrary target molecules remains elusive. NV molecular sensing requires that target molecules are immobilized within a few nanometers of NV centers with long spin coherence time. The inert nature of diamond typically requires harsh functionalization techniques such as thermal annealing or plasma processing, limiting the scope of functional groups that can be attached to the surface. Solution-phase chemical methods can be more readily generalized to install diverse functional groups, but they have not been widely explored for single-crystal diamond surfaces. Moreover, realizing shallow NV centers with long spin coherence times requires highly ordered single-crystal surfaces, and solution-phase functionalization has not yet been shown to be compatible with such demanding conditions. In this work, we report a versatile strategy to directly functionalize C-H bonds on single-crystal diamond surfaces under ambient conditions using visible light. This functionalization method is compatible with charge stable NV centers within 10 nm of the surface with spin coherence times comparable to the state of the art. As a proof of principle, we use shallow ensembles of NV centers to detect nuclear spins from functional groups attached to the surface. Our approach to surface functionalization based on visible light-driven C-H bond activation opens the door to deploying NV centers as a broad tool for chemical sensing and single-molecule spectroscopy.

Color centers in diamond are widely explored for applications in quantum sensing, computing, and networking. Their optical, spin, and charge properties have been extensively studied, while their interactions with itinerant carriers are relatively unexplored. Here we show that NV centers situated within 10 nm of the diamond surface can be converted to the neutral charge state via hole capture. By measuring the hole capture rate, we extract the capture cross section, which is suppressed by proximity to the diamond surface. The distance dependence is consistent with a carrier diffusion model, indicating that the itinerant carrier lifetime can be long, even at the diamond surface. Measuring dynamics of near-surface NV centers offers a new tool for characterizing the diamond surface and investigating charge transport in diamond devices.

Nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are atom-scale defects with long spin coherence times that can be used to sense magnetic fields with high sensitivity and spatial resolution. Typically, the magnetic field projection at a single point is measured by averaging many sequential measurements with a single NV center, or the magnetic field distribution is reconstructed by taking a spatial average over an ensemble of many NV centers. In averaging over many single-NV center experiments, both techniques discard information. Here we propose and implement a new sensing modality, whereby two or more NV centers are measured simultaneously, and we extract temporal and spatial correlations in their signals that would otherwise be inaccessible. We analytically derive the measurable two-point correlator in the presence of environmental noise, quantum projection noise, and readout noise. We show that optimizing the readout noise is critical for measuring correlations, and we experimentally demonstrate measurements of correlated applied noise using spin-to-charge readout of two NV centers. We also implement a spectral reconstruction protocol for disentangling local and nonlocal noise sources, and demonstrate that independent control of two NV centers can be used to measure the temporal structure of correlations. Our covariance magnetometry scheme has numerous applications in studying spatiotemporal structure factors and dynamics, and opens a new frontier in nanoscale sensing.

A time projection chamber (TPC) with micropattern gaseous detector (MPGD) readout is investigated as main tracking device of the International Large Detector (ILD) concept at the planned International Linear Collider (ILC). A prototype TPC equipped with a triple gas electron multiplier (GEM) readout has been built and operated in an electron test beam. The TPC was placed in a 1 T solenoidal field at the DESY II Test Beam Facility, which provides an electron beam up to 6 GeV/c. The performance of the readout modules, in particular the spatial point resolution, is determined and compared to earlier tests. New studies are presented with first results on the separation of close-by tracks and the capability of the system to measure the specific energy loss dE/dx. The specific energy loss (dE/dx) resolution is critical for particle identification and separation in TPC. In connection with the R&D for the TPC at the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC), we find the laser ionisation obeys the Gaussian distribution theoretically and experimentally. Based on this, we develop a novel method using a 266 nm UV laser to measure the dE/dx resolution. Comparing to the traditional methods with particle beams or cosmic rays, the novel method with 266 nm UV laser is more convenient and flexible. We verify the method's feasibility with a TPC prototype and extrapolate the dE/dx resolution to the CEPC TPC. Understanding the dynamics of a quantum bit's environment is essential for the realization of practical systems for quantum information processing and metrology. We use single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond to study the dynamics of a disordered spin ensemble at the diamond surface. Specifically, we tune the density of "dark" surface spins to interrogate their contribution to the decoherence of shallow NV center spin qubits. When the average surface spin spacing exceeds the NV center depth, we find that the surface spin contribution to the NV center free induction decay can be described by a stretched exponential with variable power n. We show that these observations are consistent with a model in which the spatial positions of the surface spins are fixed for each measurement, but some of them reconfigure between measurements. In particular, we observe a depth-dependent critical time associated with a dynamical transition from Gaussian (n=2) decay to n=2/3, and show that this transition arises from the competition between the small decay contributions of many distant spins and strong coupling to a few proximal spins at the surface. With the development of the circular collider, it is necessary to make accurate physics experimental measurements of particle properties at higher luminosity $Z$ pole. Micro-pattern gaseous detectors (MPGDs), which contain Gaseous Electron Multiplier (GEM) and Micro-mesh gaseous structures (Micromegas), have excellent potential for development as the readout devices of the time projection chamber (TPC) tracker detector. To meet the updated physics requirements of the high luminosity $Z$ from the preliminary concept design report (preCDR) to concept design report (CDR) at the circular electron positron collider (CEPC), In this paper, the space charge distortion of the TPC detector is simulated with the CEPC beam structure. Using the multi-physics simulation software package, the distribution of ion estimated by Geant4 is used as the input for the differential equation, and the relationship between the ion density distribution and electric field in the detector chamber is simulated. These simulation results show that the maximum deviation for Higgs $\mathcal{O}$(25 $\mu$m) meets the performance requirements in CEPC TPC detector at the high luminosity $Z$ pole, while it is still a considerable challenge for $Z$ pole, with the maximum deviation $\mathcal{O}$($>100~\mu$m). According to the previous developments, the cascaded structure of GEM and Micromegas detector has been measured. The new considerations of the detector's requirements were given, the gain needs to be reached to about 2000 with IBF$\times$Gain under 0.1, and IBF means the ions back flow ratio of the detector. The pixel TPC is a potential option to replace the traditional MPGDs with the low gain, low occupancy, and outstanding pattern recognition. Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond can be used for nanoscale sensing with atomic resolution and sensitivity; however, it has been observed that their properties degrade as they approach the diamond surface. Here we report that in addition to degraded spin coherence, NV centers within nanometers of the surface can also exhibit decreased fluorescence contrast for optically detected electron spin resonance (OD-ESR). We demonstrate that this decreased OD-ESR contrast arises from charge state dynamics of the NV center, and that it is strongly surface-dependent, indicating that surface engineering will be critical for nanoscale sensing applications based on color centers in diamond.

The discovery of a SM Higgs boson at the LHC brought about great opportunity to investigate the feasibility of a Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) operating at center-of-mass energy of $\sim 240$ GeV, as a Higgs factory, with designed luminosity of about $2\times 10^{34}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$. The CEPC provides a much cleaner collision environment than the LHC, it is ideally suited for studying the properties of Higgs boson with greater precision. Another advantage of the CEPC over the LHC is that the Higgs boson can be detected through the recoil mass method by only reconstructing Z boson decay without examining the Higgs decays. In Concept Design Report(CDR), the circumference of CEPC is 100km, with two interaction points available for exploring different detector design scenarios and technologies. The baseline design of CEPC detector is an ILD-like concept, with a superconducting solenoid of 3.0 Tesla surrounding the inner silicon detector, TPC tracker detector and the calorimetry system. Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) have been extensively studied and used in many fields, especially in particle physics experiments, including STAR and ALICE. The TPC detector will operate in continuous mode on the circular machine. To fulfill the physics goals of the future circular collider and meet Higgs/$Z$ run, a TPC with excellent performance is required. We have proposed and investigated the ions controlling performance of a novel configuration detector module. The aim of this study is to suppress ion backflow ($IBF$) continually.
