By using activated sludge from the anaerobic tank of a coking plant, a highly efficient phenol-degrading bacterial (PDB) community was successfully obtained through separation and domestication, and its effect on microbial degradation of phenol was investigated. The results showed that the degradation effect of PDB community on phenol was affected by the substrate concentration. The degradation rate reached 100% when the phenol concentration was lower than 700 mg/L. However, when the concentration of phenol increased to 1 300 mg/L, the degradation rate decreased to 41.6%. When the concentration of phenol exceeded 1 700 mg/L, the PDB community could basically unable to grow. High-throughput sequencing revealed that the species richness within the PDB community was high. Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidota were dominant phyla, while Serratia sp., Bacillus sp., and Muribaculaceae sp. were core dominant genera of PDB. Metabolites analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed that the pathway for phenol degradation by PDB community was through ortho-cleavage, resulting in acidic intermediate products that subsequently decomposed into chain-like small molecular substances.

Biological nitrogen removal technology has bottlenecks such as long start-up time and low efficiency in the process of high ammonia nitrogen wastewater treatment due to the specificity of wastewater, while the screened single high-efficiency nitrogen removal strain suffers from poor stability in the actual wastewater treatment process. In this study, based on the screening of a large number of highly efficient heterotrophic nitrification- aerobic denitrification strains,the core strains 139# and 142# were identified through partial factorial experiments, and the strain combinations were optimized by combining metabolic correlation and stratified sampling methods to artificially construct an efficient nitrogen removal community. The optimum combination of strains was obtained by re-screening with sludge at pH 5.5, and the ability of the constructed community for nitrogen removal was verified by using a reactor to simulate weak acidic wastewater treatment. The results showed that the screened high-efficiency bacterial community P44-P83-A88-P94-A142 achieved 96.97% removal of NH4+-N at 48 h under the condition of initial NH4+-N mass concentration of 200 mg/L and initial pH of 5.5. Within the reactor to simulate the actual wastewater environment, the addition of the bacteria at a weakly acidic pH of 5.5 increased the removal rate of NH4+-N from 44.89% to 75.17% and the effluent pH from 6.9 to 8.3. This study can provide a theoretical basis for the application of artificially constructed bacterial community in the treatment of weakly acidic wastewater for nitrogen removal.

Wide-angle imaging and spectral detection play vital roles in tasks such as target tracking, object classification, and anti-camouflage. However, limited by their intrinsically different architectures, as determined by frequency dispersion requirements, their simultaneous implementation in a shared-aperture system is difficult. Here, we propose a novel concept to realize reconfigurable dual-mode detection based on electrical-control tunable metasurfaces. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, the simultaneous implementation of wide-angle imaging and polarization-spectral detection in a miniature shared-aperture meta-optical system is realized for the first time via the electrical control of cascaded catenary-like metasurfaces. The proposed system supports the imaging (spectral) resolution of approximately 27.8 line-pairs per millimeter (lp·mm−1; ∼80 nm) for an imaging (spectral) mode from 8 to 14 μm. This system also bears a large field of view of about 70°, enabling multi-target recognition in both modes. This work may promote the miniaturization of multifunctional optical systems, including spectrometers and polarization imagers, and illustrates the potential industrial applications of meta-optics in biomedicine, security, space exploration, and more.

Combined polyaluminum chloride（PAC）with polyacrylamide（PAM） coagulation was used to treat bio-treated coking wastewater. The influence of the dosage of PAC and PAM on the coagulation treatment effect was investigated through a single factor experiment. Based on the single factor experiment，the response surface coagulation experiment was carried out to construct the mathematical model with the dosage of PAC and PAM as independent variables and the control coefficient of residual turbidity and excess conductance of effluent as response quantity. Moreover， its parameters were optimized by response surface method. The results showed that the optimal dosage of coagulant was 2 546.96 mg/L for PAC and 10.90 mg/L for PAM. Under this condition，the average turbidity residual rate of experimental effluent was 4.24%，the conductivity excess rate was 2.77%，and the dosing control coefficient was 7.01，with a relative error

In this work, we propose and realize a smart metasurface for programming electromagnetic (EM) manipulations based on human speech recognition. The smart metasurface platform is composed of a digital coding metasurface, a speech-recognition module, a single-chip computer, and a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) circuit, and can control EM waves according to pre-stored voice commands in a smart way. The constructed digital metasurface contains 6 × 6 super unit cells, each of which consists of 4 × 4 active elements with embedded varactor diodes. Together with the DAC and single-chip computer, the speech-recognition module can recognize voice commands and generate corresponding voltage sequences to control the metasurface. In addition, a genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted in the design of the metasurface for efficiently optimizing the phase distributions. To verify the performance of the smart metasurface platform, three typical functions are demonstrated: radar cross-section reduction, vortex beam generation, and beam splitting. The proposed strategy may offer a new avenue for controlling EM waves and establishing a link between EM and acoustic communications.

Rubber material is widely used in railway vehicles due to its superior damping performance. The testing methods, fatigue, and aging theories of rubber materials are of great significance to improve the design, manufacture, and application of rubber components for railway vehicles. This work systematically introduces the constitutive theory, mechanical testing standards, and testing methods of rubber materials. Then, the aging mechanism is described and the research progress of rubber fatigue properties is reviewed from the perspectives of fatigue crack initiation and fatigue crack propagation. Moreover, the reinforcement methods of rubber materials are presented. Finally, according to the working conditions of rubber components in railway vehicle, the technical difficulties and future research trends of fatigue characteristics analysis of rubber materials and components are pointed out.

In this article, we introduce an innovative hybrid quantum search algorithm, the Robust Non-oracle Quantum Search (RNQS), which is specifically designed to efficiently identify the minimum value within a large set of random numbers. Distinct from the Grover’s algorithm, the proposed RNQS algorithm circumvents the need for an oracle function that describes the true solution state, a feature often impractical for data science applications. Building on existing non-oracular quantum search algorithms, RNQS enhances robustness while substantially reducing running time. The superior properties of RNQS have been demonstrated through careful analysis and extensive empirical experiments. Our findings underscore the potential of the RNQS algorithm as an effective and efficient solution to combinatorial optimization problems in the realm of quantum computing.

Despite accumulated research findings confirming the link of multiword sequences (MWSs) structures and functions to essay quality, as well as the connection between MWSs statistical features (e.g., their frequency and association strengths in BNC/COCA) and writing quality, to date no study integrated these two separate lines of investigations. It remains to investigate whether and how MWSs structures, functions and their statistical features jointly affect writing quality. Drawing on 900 rated argumentative essays composed by Chinese grade 12 students in National Matriculation Test, the present study employed CollGram to automatically identify the nativelike 4-word sequences in these essays and to analyze their frequency and Mutual Information (MI) scores in COCA. The structures and functions of frequent nativelike 4-word sequences were also analyzed manually. A serial of linear mixed-effect models was constructed to investigate their main effects as well as interaction effects on essay scores. The best fit model revealed the links of higher essay scores to higher MI scores, to more noun-phrase sequences, to more stance sequences, as well as to fewer referential sequences. Additionally, the interaction of prepositional phrase sequences and their frequency in COCA affected essay scores, so did the interaction of verb phrase sequences and their MI in COCA, as well as the interaction of noun phrase sequences and their MI in COCA. The findings provide new insights into the complex interaction between MWSs structures, functions and their statistical features, as well as their joint effects on writing quality.

In this study, a series of in-plane hexagonal honeycombs with different Poisson's ratio induced by topological diversity are studied, considering re-entrant, semi-re-entrant and convex cells, respectively. The crushing strength of honeycomb in terms of Poisson's ratio is firstly presented. In the previous research, we have studied the compression performance of honeycomb with different negative Poisson's ratio. In this study, a comparative study on the local impact resistance of different sandwich panels is conducted by considering a spherical projectile with low to medium impact speed. Some critical criteria (i.e. local indentation profile, global deflection, impact force and energy absorption) are adopted to analyze the impact resistance. Finally, an influential mechanism of Poisson's ratio on the local impact resistance of sandwich panel is studied by considering the variation of core strength and post-impact collapse behavior.

BackgroundRecent clinical trials of cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitors (CDK4/6i) in human lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) have not achieved satisfactory results. The disappointing results of single-drug treatments have prompted studies about synergistic therapies of CDK4/6i with other drugs. We aimed to test the anti-tumor effect of ribociclib (a CDK4/6i) combined with pemetrexed on LUAD and the potential mechanisms.MethodsCell lines were exposed to ribociclib and pemetrexed at different doses. Antitumor effects were measured using growth inhibition. Cell cycle distribution and apoptosis were evaluated using flow cytometry. Cell migration and invasion were measured using wound healing and transwell invasion assays, respectively. The expression levels of proteins were analyzed using western blotting. Mice xenograft models were used for validation in vivo.ResultsSynergism was associated with a combination of cell cycle effects from both agents. Cell cycle analysis revealed that pemetrexed blocked cells in the S phase, whereas ribociclib arrested cells in the G1 phase. Concomitant treatment with pemetrexed and ribociclib resulted in a significantly stronger antitumor ability than treatment alone. We also found that ribociclib strongly enhanced the pro-apoptotic activity of pemetrexed via the caspase/bcl-2 signaling pathway. In addition, we report for the first time that combination treatment with ribociclib and pemetrexed significantly inhibits the migration and invasion of LUAD cells.ConclusionsCombining ribociclib and pemetrexed showed a powerful ability to inhibit cancer proliferation, invasion, and metastasis, and it holds potential as a novel effective combinative therapy for patients with LUAD.

We propose and design a tunable triple-band millimeter-wave absorbing metasurface based on nematic liquid crystal (NLC). Numerical results based on both effective circuit model and full-wave simulations verify the triple-band absorption property. All triple absorption peaks can be shifted by changing the bias voltage applied to the nematic liquid crystal. We fabricate and measure a triple-band absorbing metasurface sample, which covers 100 × 100 mm2 and is composed of 20 × 20 unit cells. In experiments, when no bias voltage is applied to the NLC layer, the resonant frequencies of the absorbing metasurface are 25.4, 28.7, and 32.8 GHz, respectively. When a 5-V bias voltage is applied, all the absorbing peaks redshift, and a frequency tunability range of 9.5%, 9.1%, and 8.58% is observed in three resonant frequencies, respectively. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical simulations. The proposed tunable absorbing metasurface provides a way forward for the realization of tunable millimeter-wave metasurface devices that can be applied in multi-band detection and imaging.

Zinc pyrithione (ZPT) is widely used as an antimicrobial. Zinc is a necessary trace element of the human whose homeostasis associated with several cancers. However, the anticancer effect of increased Zinc in ovarian cancer is still unclear. This study focussed on the anti-tumour effects of ZPT combined with Zinc in SKOV3 and SKOV3/DDP cells. The cell viability, apoptosis, migration, and invasion assays were detected by CCK-8, flow cytometry, wound healing and transwell assay, respectively. The distribution of Zinc in cells was monitored by staining of Zinc fluorescent dye and lysosome tracker. The changes in lysosomal membrane stability were reflected by acridine orange fluorescence and cathepsin D reposition. Expression of the proteins about invasion and apoptosis was evaluated by western blot. The results indicated that ZPT combined with Zinc could notably reduce cell viability, inhibit migration and invasion in SKOV3 and SKOV3/DDP cells. Besides, ZPT performed as a Zinc carrier targeted lysosomes, caused the increase of its membrane permeability and the release of cathepsin D accompanied by mitochondrial apoptosis in SKOV3/DDP cells. In conclusion, our work suggests that ZPT combined with Zinc could inhibit proliferation, migration, invasion, and promote apoptosis by trigger the lysosome-mitochondrial apoptosis pathway in ovarian carcinoma.

Based on a semirigid tricarboxylate ligand 5-((4-carboxyphenoxy)methyl)benzene-1,3-dioic acid (H3L), a new Pb(II)-based coordination polymer formulated as [Pb(HL)(H2O)](H2O) (1) was synthesized under solvothermal conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray structural analysis, power X-ray diffraction, and elemental analysis. Compound 1 is a two-dimensional layered structure formed by the connection of the one-dimensional Pb(II)-based secondary building unit chains with the partly deprotonated HL ligands, which are further extended into three-dimensional supermolecular structures through the H-bonds. Furthermore, the size of the as-prepared 1 could be downsized into the nano region through a simple ultrasonic method. Finally, the antilung cancer activities of 1 and the nanosized 1 have been probed via the MTT assay against three human lung cancer cell lines (A549, H1299, and PC9).

Abstract Background We previously reported that clioquinol acts as a zinc ionophore and inhibits the NF-κB signalling pathway. Other research has demonstrated that zinc deficiency plays a vital role in the occurrence and development of some solid tumours, and intracellular zinc supplementation may reverse this process and enhance the tumour sensitivity to anticancer treatment. Thus, we investigated the radiosensitization effects of clioquinol combined with zinc on HeLa and MCF-7 cells in vitro. Methods The dose effect of growth inhibition of clioquinol combined with zinc on cell viability was determined by a cell counting kit 8 (CCK-8) assay. The radiosensitization effect of clioquinol combined with zinc and/or MG132 in HeLa and MCF-7 cells was detected by the clonogenic assay. The cell cycle distribution and apoptosis of clioquinol combined with zinc on HeLa cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. A luciferase reporter construct was used to study the effect of clioquinol combined with zinc on NF-κB activity in HeLa cells. DNA double-strand breaks were detected by immunofluorescence. The mRNA and protein levels of ATM were analyzed by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blotting, respectively. Results Our research showed that clioquinol combined with zinc markedly increased the radiosensitivity of HeLa and MCF-7 cells in low toxic concentrations and resulted in a post-irradiation decrease in G2 phase arrest and an increase in apoptosis. Clioquinol combined with zinc also inhibited NF-κB activation, decreased ATM expression and increased DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) induced by ionizing radiation. Conclusions These findings indicated that clioquinol combined with zinc enhanced the radiosensitivity of HeLa and MCF-7 cells by the down-regulation of ATM through the NF-κB signalling pathway.

Abstract Background We have reported that Chinese herbs Astragalus polysaccharide (APS) can inhibit nuclear factor kappaB (NF-κB) activity during the development of diabetic nephropathy in mice. NF-κB plays important roles in genesis, growth, development and metastasis of cancer. NF-κB is also involved in the development of treatment resistance in tumors. Here we investigated the antitumor activity of APS in human non-small cell lung cells (A549 and NCI-H358) and the related mechanisms of action. Methods The dose–effect and time-effect of antitumor of APS were determined in human lung cancer cell line A549 and NCI-H358. The inhibition effect of APS on the P65 mRNA and protein was detected by reverse transcriptase-PCR (RT-PCR) and Western blot in A549 cells respectively. The inhibition effect of APS on the p50, CyclinD1 and Bcl-xL protein was detected by Western blot in A549 cells respectively. The effect of APS on NF-κB transcription activity was measured with NF-κB luciferase detection. Finally, the nude mice A549 xenograft was introduced to confirm the antitumor activity of APS in vivo. Results Cell viability detection results indicated that APS can inhibit the proliferation of human lung cancer cell line A549 and NCI-H358 in the concentration of 20 and 40 mg/mL. NF-κB activator Phorbol 12-myristate13-acetate (PMA) can attenuate the antitumor activity of APS in both cell lines, but NF-κB inhibitor BAY 11-7082 (Bay) can enhance the effect of APS in both cell lines. In vivo APS can delay the growth of A549 xenograft in BALB/C nude mice. APS can down-regulate the expression of P65 mRNA and protein of A549 cells and decrease the expression of p50, CyclinD1 and Bcl-xL protein. The luciferase detection showed that the APS could reduce the P65 transcription activity in A549 cells. PMA can partially alleviate the inhibition activity of P65 transcription activity of APS in A549 cells, and Bay can enhance the down-regulation of the P65 transcription activity induced by APS in A549 cells. Conclusion APS has a significant antitumor activity in human lung cancer cells A549 and NCI-H358. NF-κB inhibition may mediate the antitumor effect.

The effects of the addition of 0−3.0 wt% α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) and γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) on the quality of wheat flour as well as the texture and the aging of prebaked bread were evaluated. The addition of α-CD and γ-CD increased the ability of wheat flour to absorb water and shortened the times of dough formation and stabilization. Amylase activity slightly increased after using 2.0 and 3.0 wt% of α-CD and γ-CD, respectively. Moreover, the addition of α-CD and γ-CD increased the fermentation height and gas retention ability of dough. Dough samples containing 2.0 wt% α-CD and 3.0 wt% γ-CD showed the highest fermentation heights and gas retention volumes, respectively. Dough gas production increased with the addition of γ-CD. Gas production by dough samples containing more than 2.0 wt% α-CD exceeded that by samples in the control group. The results of the texture crumb of bread and specific volume tests revealed that the addition of 2.0 wt% α-CD and 3.0 wt% γ-CD reduced bread hardness and increased bread elasticity, resilience, and specific volume. The optimal α-CD and γ-CD contents were identified as 2.0 wt% and 3.0 wt%, respectively. The addition of 2.0 wt% α-CD and 3.0 wt% γ-CD delayed the aging of prebaked bread and reduced the hardness of prebaked bread during different weeks of storage, which may be due to decreasing the melting enthalpy of starch crystals. This work elucidated the mechanisms underlying the effects of CD addition on prebaked bread quality.

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a major cause of healthcare-associated gastrointestinal infections1,2. The exaggerated colonic inflammation caused by C. difficile toxins such as toxin B (TcdB) damages tissues and promotes C. difficile colonization3-6, but how TcdB causes inflammation is unclear. Here we report that TcdB induces neurogenic inflammation by targeting gut-innervating afferent neurons and pericytes through receptors, including the Frizzled receptors (FZD1, FZD2 and FZD7) in neurons and chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan 4 (CSPG4) in pericytes. TcdB stimulates the secretion of the neuropeptides substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) from neurons and pro-inflammatory cytokines from pericytes. Targeted delivery of the TcdB enzymatic domain, through fusion with a detoxified diphtheria toxin, into peptidergic sensory neurons that express exogeneous diphtheria toxin receptor (an approach we term toxogenetics) is sufficient to induce neurogenic inflammation and recapitulates major colonic histopathology associated with CDI. Conversely, mice lacking SP, CGRP or the SP receptor (neurokinin 1 receptor) show reduced pathology in both models of caecal TcdB injection and CDI. Blocking SP or CGRP signalling reduces tissue damage and C. difficile burden in mice infected with a standard C. difficile strain or with hypervirulent strains expressing the TcdB2 variant. Thus, targeting neurogenic inflammation provides a host-oriented therapeutic approach for treating CDI.
