Abstract Background The infrazygomatic crest mini-screw has been widely used, but the biomechanical performance of mini-screws at different insertion angles is still uncertain. The aim of this study was to analyse the primary stability of infrazygomatic crest mini-screws at different angles and to explore the effects of the exposure length (EL), screw-cortical bone contact area (SCA), and screw-trabecular bone contact area (STA) on this primary stability. Methods Ninety synthetic bones were assigned to nine groups to insert mini-screws at the cross-combined angles in the occlusogingival and mesiodistal directions. SCA, STA, EL, and lateral pull-out strength (LPS) were measured, and their relationships were analysed. Twelve mini-screws were then inserted at the optimal and poor angulations into the maxillae from six fresh cadaver heads, and the same biomechanical metrics were measured for validation. Abstract Objective Although the direct anterior approach can reduce muscle damage and ensure accurate prosthesis placement, the steep learning curve and increased risk of complications associated with DAA necessitate careful consideration. Therefore, we describe a technique for a novel percutaneously endoscopic-assisted total hip arthroplasty through mini bikini direct anterior approach (mDAA) and report the learning curve and initial outcomes. Methods The first 125 THA performed by a single surgeon between September 2020 and February 2022 using the anterior approach were included, comprising the initial 41 cases of bikini DAA (bDAA) and the subsequent 84 cases of mDAA. Outcome measures included perioperative outcomes and postoperative complications. The cumulative sum analysis (CUSUM) was used to determine the learning curve of anterior approach THA for each patient’s ORT. Multivariable analysis was performed to determine risk correlation. Results A total of 125 anterior approach THA completed between 2020 and 2022 were identified. Among these, 41 were performed via bDAA and 84 via mDAA. No statistically significant differences were observed between the groups in terms of age, gender distribution, BMI or follow-up time. A significant reduction in ORT was noted, from 140 min for bDAA to 130 min for mDAA. Furthermore, there was a consistent decrease in LOI, LOS, and wound-healing problems. There was no statistically significant difference between groups with respect to Harris Hip Scores and other postoperative complications. The curve inflection points of the learning curve for the bDAA and mDAA group were located in the 22nd and 68th cases, respectively. The reduction of hemoglobin indicated a predicted increase in ORT. Conclusions In this study, ORT, LOI, LOS, and wound-healing problems decreased overall in mDAA group. After mastering the bDAA technique, approximately 27 mDAA cases are needed to acquire proficiency in this technique. Hence, mDAA is a valuable alternative for those seeking smaller incisions, resolving wound healing problems, and aiming for enhanced recovery after surgery.

Abstract Objective The impact of nitric oxide (NO) administered via cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) on pediatric heart surgery remains controversial. The objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the impact of NO administered via CPB on pediatric heart surgery. Methods This study searched 7 electronic databases to identify Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) on the impact of NO administration during CPB on postoperative outcomes in pediatric heart surgery. The searched databases included Embase, Medline (though PubMed), Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Wan Fang database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and ClinicalTrials.gov from their inception to November 2, 2022. The included RCTs compared NO administration during CPB with standard CPB procedures or placebo gas treatment in pediatric heart surgery. fixed-effects models and/or random-effects models were used to estimate the effect size with 95% confidence interval (CI). Heterogeneity among studies was indicated by p-values and I2. All analyses were performed using Review Manager software (version 5.4) in this study. Results A total of 6 RCTs including 1,739 children were identified in this study. The primary outcome was duration of postoperative mechanical ventilation, with the length of hospital and intensive care unit (ICU) stay as the second outcomes. Through a pooled analysis, we found that exogenous NO administered via CPB for pediatric heart surgery could not shorten the duration of postoperative mechanical ventilation when compared with the control group (standardized mean difference (SMD) -0.07, CI [–0.16, 0.02], I2 = 45%, P = 0.15). Additionally, there were also no difference between the two groups in terms of length of hospital stay (mean difference (MD) -0.29, CI [–1.03, 0.46], I2 = 32%, P = 0.45) and length of ICU stay (MD -0.22, CI [–0.49 to 0.05], I2 = 72%, P = 0.10). Conclusions This meta-analysis showed that exogenous NO administration via CBP had no benefits on the duration of mechanical ventilation, the length of postoperative hospital, and ICU stay after pediatric heart surgery.

Abstract The association between the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and hyperlipidemia remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between CDAI and hyperlipidemia. The data used in this study were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset spanning from 2005 to 2020. Based on 24-h dietary recall interviews, the CDAI was calculated using the intake of six dietary antioxidants. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were employed to investigate the relationship between CDAI and the occurrence of hyperlipidemia. Additionally, restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was utilized to investigate potential non-linear relationships between the CDAI and risk of hyperlipidemia. The final analysis included 30,788 adults in the United States, among whom 25,525 (82.91%) were diagnosed with hyperlipidemia. A significant negative correlation was observed between the CDAI and hyperlipidemia in the unadjusted (Odds ratio [OR] 0.97 [95% CI 0.96, 0.98]) and multi-variable adjusted (OR 0.98 [95% CI 0.97, 0.99]) models. When the CDAI values were analyzed as a categorical variable, individuals in the highest quartile (OR 0.82 [95% CI 0.73, 0.92]) exhibited a nearly one fifth decreased risk of hyperlipidemia compared to those in the lowest quartile. Additionally, RCS analysis revealed a linear relationship between CDAI and hyperlipidemia (P for nonlinearity = 0.124). The results remained consistent across subgroups except for individuals under the age of 60 or those with diabetes mellitus. There was a significant negative correlation between the CDAI and risk of hyperlipidemia, indicating that maintaining an optimal CDAI level could effectively reduce the incidence of hyperlipidemia.

Abstract Background Malassezia restricta, a lipophilic and lipodependent yeast belonging to the basidiomycetes group, is an opportunistic fungal pathogen associated with various skin diseases, including seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff. Typically, Malassezia infection in neonates manifests as fungemia or hematogenous dissemination to the bone or lungs. However, vertebral osteomyelitis caused by these fungi is rarely reported owing to non-specific clinical presentations and laboratory/imaging findings. The Pathogen Metagenomics Sequencing (PMseq) technique enables direct high-throughput sequencing of infected specimens, facilitating the rapid and accurate detection of all microorganisms in clinical samples through comprehensive reports. Case presentation A 52-year-old male was admitted to our hospital on July 20, 2022 with a 3-month history of ambulatory difficulties and localized low back pain. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) examination of the spinal column revealed irregular bone destruction affecting the L2, L3, and L5 vertebral bodies. Additionally, low T1 and high T2 intensity lesions were observed at the intervertebral discs between L3 and L5. The presumptive diagnosis of tuberculous spondylitis was made based on the imaging findings, despite negative results in all mycobacterium tests. However, the patient exhibited no improvement after receiving regular anti-tuberculosis treatment for 3 months. Subsequent MRI revealed an expansive abnormal signal within the vertebral body, leading to progressive bone destruction. The absence of spinal tuberculosis or other infective microorganisms was confirmed through culture from blood and pathological tissue from the L4 vertebral body. Subsequently, PMseq was performed on the specimens, revealing M. restricta as the predominant pathogen with the highest relative abundance value. The pathological examination revealed the presence of fungal mycelium in the L4 vertebral body, with positive findings on periodic Schiff-methenamine and periodic acid-Schiff staining. The anti-tuberculosis treatment was discontinued, and an antifungal combination of fluconazole and voriconazole was administered. All symptoms were resolved after 7 consecutive months of treatment, and the patient was able to ambulate autonomously. Vertebral lesions were reduced on MRI during the 13-month follow-up. Conclusions M. restricta is not a commonly recognized pathogen associated with infectious vertebral osteomyelitis. However, PMseq can aid in diagnosis, timely treatment, and decision making for some non-specific infectious diseases.

Abstract Multichannel meta-imaging, inspired by the parallel-processing capability of neuromorphic computing, offers considerable advancements in resolution enhancement and edge discrimination in imaging systems, extending even into the mid- to far-infrared spectrum. Currently typical multichannel infrared imaging systems consist of separating optical gratings or merging multi-cameras, which require complex circuit design and heavy power consumption, hindering the implementation of advanced human-eye-like imagers. Here, we present printable graphene plasmonic photodetector arrays driven by a ferroelectric superdomain for multichannel meta-infrared imaging with enhanced edge discrimination. The fabricated photodetectors exhibited multiple spectral responses with zero-bias operation by directly rescaling the ferroelectric superdomain instead of reconstructing the separated gratings. We also demonstrated enhanced and faster shape classification (98.1%) and edge detection (98.2%) using our multichannel infrared images compared with single-channel detectors. Our proof-of-concept photodetector arrays simplify multichannel infrared imaging systems and offer potential solutions in efficient edge detection in human-brain-type machine vision.

Abstract Drug exposure during pregnancy lacks global fetal safety data. The maternal drug exposure birth cohort (DEBC) study, a prospective longitudinal investigation, aims to explore the correlation of maternal drug exposure during pregnancy with pregnancy outcomes, and establish a human biospecimen biobank. Here we describe the process of establishing DEBC and show that the drug exposure rate in the first trimester of pregnant women in DEBC (n = 112,986) is 30.70%. Among the drugs used, dydrogesterone and progesterone have the highest exposure rates, which are 11.97% and 10.82%, respectively. The overall incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes is 13.49%. Dydrogesterone exposure during the first trimester is correlated with higher incidences of stillbirth, preterm birth, low birth weight, and birth defects, along with a lower incidence of miscarriage/abortion. Due to the limitations of this cohort study, causative conclusions cannot be drawn. Further follow-up and in-depth data analysis are planned for future studies.

Abstract Objective To estimate the pterygium ocular surface state, and compare with healthy eyes and dry eyes. To investigate the inflammation due to pterygia growth by tear Lymphotoxin-alpha (LT α) test. Design Prospective, single-center study. Participants 400 patients, divided into 100 pterygium group, 100 mild dry eye group, 100 moderate dry eye group, and 100 age-and sex-matched normal controls. Methods The non-invasive break-up time (NIBUT), tear meniscus height (TMH) test, corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), meibomian gland loss score (MGs), and lipid layer thickness (LLT) were evaluated in all patients. Pterygium status and ocular status in the pterygium group were collected. The tear LT α test was conducted in the pterygium patients group. Result Pterygium can affect the ocular surface, leading to decreased tear film stability. The TMH, NIBUT, CFS, MGs, and lipid layer thickness can provide insights into this phenomenon. The presence of pterygium can change the structure and condition of the ocular surface. Tear LT α testing shows an abnormal decrease in LT α levels in pterygium patients. This indicates an immune-inflammation microenvironment that causes tissue repair deficiency. Conclusion The dry eye triggered by the growth of pterygium may originate from the tear film instability due to pterygia. As an inflammatory index, LT α in the development of pterygium and the aggravation of dry eye patients can indicate that the ocular surface is in different inflammatory states. Future tear testing in LT α may be a potential indicator to assess the inflammatory status of the dry eye.

Oncolytic viruses (OVs), a group of replication-competent viruses that can selectively infect and kill cancer cells while leaving healthy cells intact, are emerging as promising living anticancer agents. Unlike traditional drugs composed of non-replicating compounds or biomolecules, the replicative nature of viruses confer unique pharmacokinetic properties that require further studies. Despite some pharmacokinetics studies of OVs, mechanistic insights into the connection between OV pharmacokinetics and antitumor efficacy remain vague. Here, we characterized the pharmacokinetic profile of oncolytic virus M1 (OVM) in immunocompetent mouse tumor models and identified the JAK‒STAT pathway as a key modulator of OVM pharmacokinetics. By suppressing the JAK‒STAT pathway, early OVM pharmacokinetics are ameliorated, leading to enhanced tumor-specific viral accumulation, increased AUC and Cmax, and improved antitumor efficacy. Rather than compromising antitumor immunity after JAK‒STAT inhibition, the improved pharmacokinetics of OVM promotes T cell recruitment and activation in the tumor microenvironment, providing an optimal opportunity for the therapeutic outcome of immune checkpoint blockade, such as anti-PD-L1. Taken together, this study advances our understanding of the pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic relationship in OV therapy.

Abstract Background A greater emphasis has been placed on the part of cell cycle progression (CCP) in cancer in recent years. Nevertheless, the precise connection between CCP-related genes and bladder cancer (BCa) has remained elusive. This study endeavors to establish and validate a reliable risk model incorporating CCP-related factors, aiming to predict both the prognosis and immune landscape of BCa. Methods Clinical information and RNA sequencing data were collected from the GEO and TCGA databases. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were conducted to construct a risk model associated with CCP. The performance of the model was assessed using ROC and Kaplan–Meier survival analyses. Functional enrichment analysis was employed to investigate potential cellular functions and signaling pathways. The immune landscape was characterized using CIBERSORT algorithms. Integration of the risk model with various clinical variables led to the development of a nomogram. Results To build the risk model, three CCP-related genes (RAD54B, KPNA2, and TPM1) were carefully chosen. ROC and Kaplan–Meier survival analysis confirm that our model has good performance. About immunological infiltration, the high-risk group showed decreased levels of regulatory T cells and dendritic cells coupled with increased levels of activated CD4 + memory T cells, M2 macrophages, and neutrophils. Furthermore, the nomogram showed impressive predictive power for OS at 1, 3, and 5 years. Conclusion This study provides new insights into the association between the CCP-related risk model and the prognosis of BCa, as well as its impact on the immune landscape.

Abstract Exposure to PM2.5, a harmful type of air pollution, has been associated with compromised male reproductive health; however, it remains unclear whether such exposure can elicit transgenerational effects on male fertility. Here, we aim to examine the effect of paternal exposure to real-world PM2.5 on the reproductive health of male offspring. We have observed that paternal exposure to real-world PM2.5 can lead to transgenerational primary hypogonadism in a sex-selective manner, and we have also confirmed this phenotype by using an external model. Mechanically, we have identified small RNAs (sRNAs) that play a critical role in mediating these transgenerational effects. Specifically, miR6240 and piR016061, which are present in F0 PM sperm, regulate intergenerational transmission by targeting Lhcgr and Nsd1, respectively. We have also uncovered that piR033435 and piR006695 indirectly regulate F1 PM sperm methylation by binding to the 3′-untranslated region of Tet1 mRNA. The reduced expression of Tet1 resulted in hypermethylation of several testosterone synthesis genes, including Lhcgr and Gnas, impaired Leydig cell function and ultimately led to transgenerational primary hypogonadism. Our findings provide insights into the mechanisms underlying the transgenerational effects of paternal PM2.5 exposure on reproductive health, highlighting the crucial role played by sRNAs in mediating these effects. The findings underscore the significance of paternal pre-conception interventions in alleviating the adverse effects of environmental pollutants on reproductive health.

Abstract Objective Evaluation of clinical efficacy and safety of tobramycin/dexamethasone eye ointment in treating persistent corneal epithelial dysfunction (PED) after cataract surgery. Methods 26 cases diagnosed as PED after cataract surgery accept the tobramycin/dexamethasone ophthalmic ointment and intense pulse light treatment in the Xiamen University of Xiamen eye center between September 2016 and April 2022 were retrospectively analyzed, mainly including clinical manifestations, characteristics of morphological changes imaged by in vivo confocal microscopy, meibomian glands infrared photography, lipid layer thickness (LLT), management and therapeutic effects. Results There were 26 eyes, include 8(35%) males and 15(65%) females with an average age of 69.6 ± 5.2 years(50 to 78 years). The mean hospitalization time was (18.4 ± 7.5) days after cataract surgery. Twenty patients had meibomian gland dysfunction. Infrared photography revealed varying loss in the meibomian glands, with a mean score of 3.8 ± 1.2 for gland loss. The mean LLT was 61.6 ± 8.4 nm. After treatment, 20 patients were cured, and 3 received amniotic membrane transplantation. After treatment, the uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best-corrected vision activity (BCVA) improved (P 0.05). Conclusions The early manifestation of PED after surgery is punctate staining of the corneal epithelium. Tobramycin and dexamethasone eye ointment bandages have a good repair effect. The meibomian gland massage combined with intense pulse light treatment can effectively shorten the course of the disease.

Mango, melon, pineapple, and carrot were processed into reconstituted fruits and vegetable cubes by conventional thermal pretreatment (TP) or high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) pretreatment at different pressures followed by freeze drying (FD). The effects of different HHP pressures on the physicochemical quality, bioactive substances, antioxidant activity, and sensory quality of FD fruits and vegetable cubes were investigated. The results showed that compared with TP, HHP significantly increased the a* and b* values, titratable acid content and antioxidant activity (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity, hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity, and ferric reducing powder), increased the contents of total phenols, flavonoids, and ascorbic acid by 21.11%–30.27%, 59.96%–68.58%, and 13.35%–15.34%, respectively, and increased the contents of volatile alcohols and ketones to 189.65–207.82 and 59.60–81.16 μg/kg, respectively. In addition, the sensory intensities of five aroma attributes and the preferences for color, aroma and taste of HHP-pretreated FD cubes were significantly higher than those of TP-pretreated FD cubes. The sensory quality of FD fruits and vegetable cubes pre-treated at 300 and 500 MPa were closest to that of the non-treatment group. HHP pretreatment improved the antioxidant activity by increasing cell membrane permeability, thereby promoting the release of bioactive and flavor substances. Compared with conventional TP, HHP can effectively improve the quality characteristics of FD fruits and vegetable cubes.

Abstract The occurrence of many autoimmune diseases takes root on the disrupted balance among Treg cells, Teff cells, etc. Low-dose interleukin-2 (IL-2) cytokine demonstrates promising clinical efficacy in the expansion of Treg cells and the treatment of autoimmune diseases. However, its clinical application is hindered by the small therapeutic index and short half-life. Previous studies have shown that non-covalent complex of human IL-2 and anti-IL-2 antibody biases cytokine activity towards Treg cells and extends IL-2’s half-life. The clinical translation of such complex is non-trivial. In this study, we discover an anti-human IL-2 antibody and engineer a covalently-linked single-agent fusion of human IL-2 and its antibody that selectively expands Treg cells and exhibits superior disease control activity in animal models of ulcerative colitis and systemic lupus erythematosus, with proper safety profile and good developability. These studies pave the road for its clinical development in diverse autoimmune diseases.

ObjectiveTo investigate the difference in the effectiveness and refraction of the foldable capsular buckle (FCB) in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).MethodsSix patients with simple RRD were treated for FCB scleral buckling at Xiamen Eye Center of Xiamen University from October 2023 to February 2024. The parameters assessed included demographic data, clinical data such as preoperative ocular axis, corneal endothelial count, macular foveal thickness, operative time, preoperative and final follow-up intro ocular pressure (IOP), retinal attachment status, and postoperative complications. Refractive change before and after surgery, including sphere, cylinder degree, spherical equivalent, and absolute spherical equivalent difference were compared.ResultsAll six patients with sound retinal reattachment after FCB scleral buckling, including two men and four women, mean age 41.33 ± 12.40 years old, duration before surgery onset to 7.17 ± 7.16 days, FCB mean operation time 36.67 ± 13.07 min, Preoperative IOP mean 13.35 ± 2.64 mmHg and mean 21.12 ± 8.09 mmHg of final follow-up IOP; there was no significant difference between preoperative IOP and follow-up IOP (p = 0.050). The preoperative sphere range was −6.25 to +2.50 D, and the cylinder range was −2.50 to +1.00 D; the absolute spherical equivalent difference before and after was 1.60 ± 1.69 degrees.ConclusionFCB can achieve retinal reattachment and restore visual function in cases of RRD. The shorter duration of external scleral buckle compression with FCB suggests that FCB scleral buckling holds greater promise in the clinical treatment of RRD caused by retinal tears.

The environmental friendliness and high efficiency of magnetocaloric refrigeration make it a promising substitute for vapor compression refrigeration. However, the common use of heat transfer fluid in conventional passive magnetic regenerators (PMRs) and active magnetic regenerators (AMRs) makes only partial materials contribute to the regeneration process, which produces large regeneration loss and greatly limits the regeneration efficiency and refrigeration performance at high frequency. Herein, we propose a new conceptual hybrid magnetic regenerator (HMR) composed of multiple solid-state high thermal conductivity materials (HTCMs) and magnetocaloric materials (MCMs), in which both HTCM and MCM elements participate in the regeneration process. This novel working mode could greatly reduce regeneration losses caused by dead volume, pressure losses, and temperature nonuniformity in heat transfer substances to markedly improve regeneration efficiency at high working frequencies. Using the experimentally obtained adiabatic temperature change and magnetic work and with the help of finite element simulation, a maximum temperature of 26 K, a dramatically large cooling power of 8.3 kW/kg, and a maximum ideal exergy efficiency of 54.2% are achieved at the working frequency of 10 Hz for an ideal prototype device of a rotary HMR magnetocaloric refrigerator, which shows potential for achieving an integrative, advanced performance against current AMR/PMR systems.

Abstract Plastic crystals as barocaloric materials exhibit the large entropy change rivalling freon, however, the limited pressure-sensitivity and large hysteresis of phase transition hinder the colossal barocaloric effect accomplished reversibly at low pressure. Here we report reversible colossal barocaloric effect at low pressure in two-dimensional van-der-Waals alkylammonium halides. Via introducing long carbon chains in ammonium halide plastic crystals, two-dimensional structure forms in (CH3–(CH2)n-1)2NH2X (X: halogen element) with weak interlayer van-der-Waals force, which dictates interlayer expansion as large as 13% and consequently volume change as much as 12% during phase transition. Such anisotropic expansion provides sufficient space for carbon chains to undergo dramatic conformation disordering, which induces colossal entropy change with large pressure-sensitivity and small hysteresis. The record reversible colossal barocaloric effect with entropy change ΔSr ~ 400 J kg−1 K−1 at 0.08 GPa and adiabatic temperature change ΔTr ~ 11 K at 0.1 GPa highlights the design of novel barocaloric materials by engineering the dimensionality of plastic crystals.

The relationship between commercial vehicle travel patterns and urban functional areas reveals potential connections between urban form and human geographic flows, which provides critical information for optimizing urban transportation systems. Benefiting from the large-scale trajectory datasets, it would be possible to investigate deeper research by modeling the implied urban travel patterns. This study designs a framework to reveal the collective movement patterns of commercial vehicle trajectories inside the urban environment, focusing on their spatiotemporal variations within functional areas. Stopping behaviors of trajectories were identified to construct spatiotemporal origin-destination (OD) matrices, representing time-varying human geographic flows. The singular value decomposition (SVD) method was employed to quantify spatio-temporal OD matrice to obtain time and space travel features. Travel patterns’ dynamics and spatial interactions within functional areas were then analyzed. The experimental results obtained with real-life datasets from Changsha, China, uncovered three typical travel patterns depicting commercial vehicle activities in urban environment shifts from work-related locations on weekdays to leisure destinations on weekends, with central areas experiencing more short and medium-range trips. The findings provide scientific references for optimizing spatio-temporal travel patterns and functional distribution to meet the demands of urban development and traffic management strategies.

Gesture recognition is crucial for enhancing human-computer interaction and is particularly pivotal in rehabilitation contexts, aiding individuals recovering from physical impairments and significantly improving their mobility and interactive capabilities. However, current wearable hand gesture recognition approaches are often limited in detection performance, wearability, and generalization. We thus introduce EchoGest, a novel hand gesture recognition system based on soft, stretchable, transparent artificial skin with integrated ultrasonic waveguides. Our presented system is the first to use soft ultrasonic waveguides for hand gesture recognition. EcoflexTM 00–31 and EcoflexTM 00-45 Near ClearTM silicone elastomers were employed to fabricate the artificial skin and ultrasonic waveguides, while 0.1 mm diameter silver-plated copper wires connected the transducers in the waveguides to the electrical system. The wires are enclosed within an additional elastomer layer, achieving a sensing skin with a total thickness of around $500~\mu $ m. Ten participants wore the EchoGest system and performed static hand gestures from two gesture sets: 8 daily life gestures and 10 American Sign Language (ASL) digits 0-9. Leave-One-Subject-Out Cross-Validation analysis demonstrated accuracies of 91.13% for daily life gestures and 88.5% for ASL gestures. The EchoGest system has significant potential in rehabilitation, particularly for tracking and evaluating hand mobility, which could substantially reduce the workload of therapists in both clinical and home-based settings. Integrating this technology could revolutionize hand gesture recognition applications, from real-time sign language translation to innovative rehabilitation techniques.

Abstract Despite the recent achievements in urea electrosynthesis from co-reduction of nitrogen wastes (such as NO3 −) and CO2, the product selectivity remains fairly mediocre due to the competing nature of the two parallel reduction reactions. Here we report a catalyst design that affords high selectivity to urea by sequentially reducing NO3 − and CO2 at a dynamic catalytic centre, which not only alleviates the competition issue but also facilitates C−N coupling. We exemplify this strategy on a nitrogen-doped carbon catalyst, where a spontaneous switch between NO3 − and CO2 reduction paths is enabled by reversible hydrogenation on the nitrogen functional groups. A high urea yield rate of 596.1 µg mg−1 h−1 with a promising Faradaic efficiency of 62% is obtained. These findings, rationalized by in situ spectroscopic techniques and theoretical calculations, are rooted in the proton-involved dynamic catalyst evolution that mitigates overwhelming reduction of reactants and thereby minimizes the formation of side products.

Pufferfish, globally recognized for its distinctive delicacy, carries high culinary value. However, it is also notorious for the lethal toxicity, and there is a great demand for traceability measures in the commercial trade of pufferfish to assure safety and accountability. This research introduces a novel deep learning approach, utilizing facial recognition techniques, to identify pufferfish individuals. This method specifically leverages distinctive back skin texture patterns as key biological traits. Our initial step involved assembling a collection of annotated and augmented images of Takifugu bimaculatus, a species of pufferfish native to East China Sea, which is accessible upon request. We then extensively investigated fundamental components of Deep Face Recognition (deep FR) systems, focusing on segmentation and extraction models, and assessed their effectiveness in identifying pufferfish. Following this, we developed FishIR (Fish Individual Recognition), a framework to identify pufferfish individuals that consists of four deep FR stages while incorporating enhanced segmentation and feature extraction techniques. Experimental results show that this framework successfully captures unique representations of individual pufferfish, as verified by the high accuracy achieved in recognition tasks.

Abstract To explore the correlation between tear LT-a, pterygium status, and dry eye indicators. We established a diagnostic model to evaluate active pterygium. A retrospective study was conducted between June 2021 and June 2023 on 172 patients, comprising 108 men and 64 women. The study analyzed LT-a and various ocular parameters in all participants. The data was collected using Excel software and analyzed using SPSS 25.0 statistical software and Medcalc. We made a nomogram diagnostic model to different diagnosed the state of pterygium. This study found that pterygium has progressive eye surface damage during the active state. There was no significant difference in dry eye indicators between the two groups. Abstract Objective This prospective trial aimed to evaluate the effects of low-dose intravenous norepinephrine (NE) on intraoperative blood loss and bleeding from osteotomy sites during non-tourniquet total knee arthroplasty (TKA) under general anesthesia. Methods A total of 120 patients who underwent TKA between December 2020 and May 2022 were enrolled and randomly assigned to the intravenous low-dose NE Group (NE Group) or the control group (C Group). During surgery, NE Group received 0.05–0.1 μg/(kg min) of NE intravenously to raise and maintain the patient's mean arterial pressure (MAP). C Group received the same dose of saline as placebo. Intraoperative blood loss, bleeding score at osteotomy sites, Δlactate levels (Lac), postoperative complications, and transfusion rate during hospitalization were compared between groups. Results Intraoperative and osteotomy blood loss was significantly lower in the NE Group than in the C Group (P 0.05). There was no significant difference in complications between the groups 3 days after surgery (P > 0.05). In addition, there was no significant difference in blood transfusion rates between the two groups during hospitalization (P > 0.05). Conclusion In non-tourniquet TKA under general anesthesia, low-dose intravenous NE safely and effectively reduced intraoperative blood loss and provided a satisfactory osteotomy site while maintaining a higher MAP.

The bacterial ATP-competitive GyrB/ParE subunits of type II topoisomerase are important anti-bacterial targets to treat super drug-resistant bacterial infections. Herein we discovered novel pyrrolamide-type GyrB/ParE inhibitors based on the structural modifications of the candidate AZD5099 that was withdrawn from the clinical trials due to safety liabilities such as mitochondrial toxicity. The hydroxyisopropyl pyridazine compound 28 had a significant inhibitory effect on Gyrase (GyrB, IC50 = 49 nmol/L) and a modest inhibitory effect on Topo IV (ParE, IC50 = 1.513 μmol/L) of Staphylococcus aureus. It also had significant antibacterial activities on susceptible and resistant Gram-positive bacteria with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of less than 0.03 μg/mL, which showed a time-dependent bactericidal effect and low frequencies of spontaneous resistance against S. aureus. Compound 28 had better protective effects than the positive control drugs such as DS-2969 (5) and AZD5099 (6) in mouse models of sepsis induced by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. It also showed better bactericidal activities than clinically used vancomycin in the mouse thigh MRSA infection models. Moreover, compound 28 has much lower mitochondrial toxicity than AZD5099 (6) as well as excellent therapeutic indexes and pharmacokinetic properties. At present, compound 28 has been evaluated as a pre-clinical drug candidate for the treatment of drug-resistant Gram-positive bacterial infection. On the other hand, compound 28 also has good inhibitory activities against stubborn Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli (MIC = 1 μg/mL), which is comparable with the most potent pyrrolamide-type GyrB/ParE inhibitors reported recently. In addition, the structure–activity relationships of the compounds were also studied.

Abstract General movements (GMs) have been widely used for the early clinical evaluation of infant brain development, allowing immediate evaluation of potential development disorders and timely rehabilitation. The infants’ general movements can be captured digitally, but the lack of quantitative assessment and well‐trained clinical pediatricians presents an obstacle for many years to achieve wider deployment, especially in low‐resource settings. There is a high potential to explore wearable sensors for movement analysis due to outstanding privacy, low cost, and easy‐to‐use features. This work presents a sparse sensor network with soft wireless IMU devices (SWDs) for automatic early evaluation of general movements in infants. The sparse network consisting of only five sensor nodes (SWDs) with robust mechanical properties and excellent biocompatibility continuously and stably captures full‐body motion data. The proof‐of‐the‐concept clinical testing with 23 infants showcases outstanding performance in recognizing neonatal activities, confirming the reliability of the system. Taken together with a tiny machine learning algorithm, the system can automatically identify risky infants based on the GMs, with an accuracy of up to 100% (99.9%). The wearable sparse sensor network with an artificial intelligence‐based algorithm facilitates intelligent evaluation of infant brain development and early diagnosis of development disorders.

Kidney disease has become a global public health problem. Patients with end-stage kidney disease must rely on dialysis or undergo renal transplantation, placing heavy burdens on their families and society. Therefore, it is important to develop new therapeutic targets and intervention strategies during early stages of chronic kidney disease. The widespread application of liquid biopsy has led to an increasing number of studies concerning the roles of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in kidney disease. In this review, we summarize relevant studies concerning the roles of cfDNA in kidney disease and describe various strategies for targeted removal of cfDNA, with the goal of establishing novel therapeutic approaches for kidney disease.

IntroductionHigher alcohols are volatile compounds produced during alcoholic fermentation that affect the quality and safety of the final product. This study used a correlation analysis of transcriptomics and metabolomics to study the impact of the initial addition of SO2 (30, 60, and 90 mg/L) on the synthesis of higher alcohols in Saccharomyces cerevisiae EC1118a and to identify key genes and metabolic pathways involved in their metabolism.MethodsTranscriptomics and metabolomics correlation analyses were performed and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differential metabolites were identified. Single-gene knockouts for targeting genes of important pathways were generated to study the roles of key genes involved in the regulation of higher alcohol production.ResultsWe found that, as the SO2 concentration increased, the production of total higher alcohols showed an overall trend of first increasing and then decreasing. Multi-omics correlation analysis revealed that the addition of SO2 affected carbon metabolism (ko01200), pyruvate metabolism (ko00620), glycolysis/gluconeogenesis (ko00010), the pentose phosphate pathway (ko00030), and other metabolic pathways, thereby changing the precursor substances. The availability of SO2 indirectly affects the formation of higher alcohols. In addition, excessive SO2 affected the growth of the strain, leading to the emergence of a lag phase. We screened the ten most likely genes and constructed recombinant strains to evaluate the impact of each gene on the formation of higher alcohols. The results showed that ADH4, SER33, and GDH2 are important genes of alcohol metabolism in S. cerevisiae. The isoamyl alcohol content of the EC1118a-ADH4 strain decreased by 21.003%; The isobutanol content of the EC1118a-SER33 strain was reduced by 71.346%; and the 2-phenylethanol content of EC1118a-GDH2 strain was reduced by 25.198%.ConclusionThis study lays a theoretical foundation for investigating the mechanism of initial addition of SO2 in the synthesis of higher alcohols in S. cerevisiae, uncovering DEGs and key metabolic pathways related to the synthesis of higher alcohols, and provides guidance for regulating these mechanisms.

Marine water resources (including seawater and pore-water) provide important information for understanding the marine environment, studying marine organisms, and developing marine resources. Obtaining high-quality marine water samples is significant to marine scientific research and monitoring of marine resources. Since the 20th century, marine water resources sampling technology has become the key research direction of marine equipment. In order to have a comprehensive understanding of marine water resource sampling technology, promote the development of marine water resource sampling technology, and obtain high-quality marine water samples, this paper summarizes the current development status of the sampling technology of marine water resources from the aspects of research and application. This paper first provides an overview of seawater and pore water sampling techniques. The two sampling technologies are categorized and discussed according to different sampling means, and the advantages of different sampling means are compared. We also found similarities between seawater and pore water sampling means. Then, a comprehensive analysis of existing technologies and equipment reveals the development trend of marine water resources sampling technology, for example, the need for high temporal and spatial accuracy in sampling, etc. Finally, it explores the challenges facing deep-sea water sampling technology regarding future research, development and equipment industrialization. These reviews not only help researchers better understand the current development of marine water sampling technologies but also provide an important reference for the future development of marine water sampling technology, which provides guidance and support for in-depth marine scientific research and effective use of marine resources.

Cellular blebbing has been widely recognized as a hallmark of processes such as apoptosis and cell migration. Here, we developed a novel double-layer compression microfluidic device to trigger the enforced blebbing of cells in a programmable manner. It was found that the critical compression for inducing membrane bleb in highly invasive or drug-resistant breast and lung cancer cell lines could be several times higher than that of their non-invasive or drug-sensitive counterparts. Furthermore, we showed that knockdown of annexin-6, a protein known to be heavily involved in membrane and calcium dynamics in cells, led to a significantly reduced cellular volume, reflecting a lowered intracellular pressure, and an ∼twofold increase in the critical compressive strain for triggering blebbing. The fact that hundreds of cells can be tested and automatically analyzed in our device at the same time highlights the potential of this simple and label-free method in applications such as cell sorting and disease detection.

Two new species of Trechispora indigenous to southern China, T. laxa and T. tongdaoensis, are described and illustrated, and the first record of T. khokpasiensis in China is reported. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of the concatenated nuclear rDNA ITS1–5.8S–ITS2 and nuclear large subunit sequences supported the inclusion of the three species within the Trechispora clade, together with species formerly classified in Scytinopogon. The new species are similar in micromorphology to species of Trechispora (as traditionally circumscribed) but are distinguished by having coralloid basidiomata. A key to the known coralloid Trechispora species in China is provided.

The artificially submerged cavitation water jet is effectively utilized by ejecting a high-pressure water stream into a low-pressure water stream through concentric nozzles and utilizing the cavitation phenomenon generated by the shear layer formed between the two streams. In this study, we investigated the cavitation characteristics of artificially submerged cavitation water jets by combining numerical simulations and erosion experiments. The results indicate that an appropriate standoff distance can generate more cavitation clouds on the workpiece surface, and the erosion characteristics of the artificially submerged cavitation water jet are most pronounced at a dimensionless standoff distance of SD = 30. The shear effect formed between the two jets plays a crucial role in generating initial cavitation bubbles within the flow field of the artificially submerged cavitation water jet. Moreover, increasing the convergent angle between the two jets can significantly enhance the cavitation effect between them and lead to a more substantial cavitation effect. Simultaneously, increasing the pressure of the high-pressure inner nozzle also contributes to enhancing the cavitation effect of the artificially submerged cavitation water jet.

Abstract Evidence from numerous studies has revealed the synchronous progression of aging in bone and muscle; however, little is known about the underlying mechanisms. To this end, human muscles and bones are harvested and the aging‐associated transcriptional dynamics of two tissues in parallel using single‐cell RNA sequencing are surveyed. A subset of lipid‐associated macrophages (triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2, TREM2+ Macs) is identified in both aged muscle and bone. Genes responsible for muscle dystrophy and bone loss, such as secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1), are also highly expressed in TREM2+ Macs, suggesting its conserved role in aging‐related features. A common transition toward pro‐inflammatory phenotypes in aged CD4+ T cells across tissues is also observed, activated by the nuclear factor kappa B subunit 1 (NFKB1). CD4+ T cells in aged muscle experience Th1‐like differentiation, whereas, in bone, a skewing toward Th17 cells is observed. Furthermore, these results highlight that degenerated myocytes produce BAG6‐containing exosomes that can communicate with Th17 cells in the bone through its receptor natural cytotoxicity triggering receptor 3 (NCR3). This communication upregulates CD6 expression in Th17 cells, which then interact with TREM2+ Macs through CD6‐ALCAM signaling, ultimately stimulating the transcription of SPP1 in TREM2+ Macs. The negative correlation between serum exosomal BCL2‐associated athanogene 6 (BAG6) levels and bone mineral density further supports its role in mediating muscle and bone synchronization with aging.

Heterotopic pregnancy (HP) is a rare but potentially life-threatening event with a high risk of maternal death, which also jeopardise the coexisting intrauterine pregnancy (IUP), thus an early accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment can decrease adverse complications. We aimed to explore the early predictors for pregnancy outcomes of HP. We reviewed patients with HP following assisted reproductive technology in our institution between January 2013 and December 2020. The relationships between pregnancy outcomes and clinical features were analysed by logistic regression. We found that 29 patients (72.5%) of HP were accurately diagnosed by transvaginal ultrasonography (TVS). Eighteen patients in the surgery group had live births, three of whom delivered preterm. Abstract Objective Spinal schwannomas (SS) and spinal meningiomas (SM) account for most intradural extramedullary (IDEM) tumors. These tumors are usually benign lesions, which generally respond favorably to surgical excision. Few studies up to now tried to determine the long-term outcome after minimally invasive surgery (MIS) with multimodal intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) for IDEM tumors. The aim of this study was to present one of the largest case series with special regard to IONM findings and long-term outcome after MIS-keyhole surgery with a tubular retractor system. Methods Between January 2013 and August 2018, 87 patients with IDEM tumors who underwent tumor removal surgery via MIS-keyhole approach under multimodal IONM were retrospectively reviewed. The neurological status was assessed using a modified McCormick grading scale pre- and postoperatively. Multimodal IONM consisted of motor evoked potentials (MEP), somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP), and electromyography (EMG). Both short-term and long-term clinical evaluations as well as patients’ medical files were retrospectively analyzed. Results Surgeries were performed for resection of SS in 49 patients and SM in 38 patients. Tumor locations were cervical in 16.1%, thoracic in 48.3%, thoracolumbar in 4.6%, lumbar 31%. Critical IONM changes were detected in 9 operations (10.3%) in which there were 2 SEPs, 5 MEPs, and 2 EMG events. Three IONM changes (2 MEPs, 1 EMG) were turned out to be transient change in nature since they were resolved in a short time when immediate corrective actions were initiated. Six patients with permanent IONM changes (2SEPs, 3MEPs, 1EMG event), all deficits had resolved during hospitalization or on short -term follow-up evaluation. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predicted values of IONM were 100, 96, 67, and 100%, respectively. Gross total resection rate was 100%, and a stable or improved McCormick grade exhibited in all patients. No tumor recurrence and no spinal instability were found in the long-term follow-up evaluation (mean 5.2 ± 2.9 years postoperatively). Overall, 94% of patients were either satisfied or very satisfied with their operation, and 93% patients reported excellent or good general clinical outcome according to Odom’s criteria. Conclusion MIS-keyhole surgery with multimodal IONM for IDEM tumors enables a high level of satisfaction and a satisfying long-term clinical and surgical outcome.

Abstract Carbon materials (e.g., pyrogenic carbon (PyC)) are widely used in agricultural soils and can participate in various biogeochemical processes, including iron (Fe) cycling. In soils, Fe(II) species have been proposed as the main active contributor to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are involved in various biogeochemical processes. However, the effects of PyC on the transformation of different Fe species in soils and the associated production of ROS are rarely investigated. This study examined the influence of PyC (pyrolyzed at 300–700 °C) on Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycling and hydroxyl radical (·OH) production during redox fluctuations of paddy soils. Results showed that the reduction of Fe(III) in soils was facilitated by PyC during anoxic incubation, which was ascribed to the increased abundance of dissimilatory Fe(III)-reducing microorganisms (biotic reduction) and the electron exchange capacity of PyC (abiotic reduction). During oxygenation, PyC and higher soil pH promoted the oxidation of active Fe(II) species (e.g., exchangeable and low-crystalline Fe(II)), which consequently induced higher yield of ·OH and further led to degradation of imidacloprid and inactivation of soil microorganisms. Our results demonstrated that PyC accelerated Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycling and ·OH production during redox fluctuations of paddy soils (especially those with low content of soil organic carbon), providing a new insight for remediation strategies in agricultural fields contaminated with organic pollutants. Abstract The cornea is a tissue susceptible to various injuries and traumas with a complicated cascade repair process, in which conserving its integrity and clarity is critical to restoring visual function. Enhancing the endogenous electric field is recognized as an effective method of accelerating corneal injury repair. However, current equipment limitations and implementation complexities hinder its widespread adoption. Here, we propose a snowflake-inspired, blink-driven flexible piezoelectric contact lens that can convert mechanical blink motions into a unidirectional pulsed electric field for direct application to moderate corneal injury repair. The device is validated on mouse and rabbit models with different relative corneal alkali burn ratios to modulate the microenvironment, alleviate stromal fibrosis, promote orderly epithelial arrangement and differentiation, and restore corneal clarity. Within an 8-day intervention, the corneal clarity of mice and rabbits improves by more than 50%, and the repair rate of mouse and rabbit corneas increases by over 52%. Mechanistically, the device intervention is advantageous in blocking growth factors’ signaling pathways specifically involved in stromal fibrosis whilst preserving and harnessing the signaling pathways required for indispensable epithelial metabolism. This work put forward an efficient and orderly corneal therapeutic technology utilizing artificial endogenous-strengthened signals generated by spontaneous body activities.

Abstract Oncolytic viruses (OVs) represent a type of encouraging multi-mechanistic drug for the treatment of cancer. However, attenuation of virulence, which is generally required for the development of OVs based on pathogenic viral backbones, is frequently accompanied by a compromised killing effect on tumor cells. By exploiting the property of viruses to evolve and adapt in cancer cells, we perform directed natural evolution on refractory colorectal cancer cell HCT-116 and generate a next-generation oncolytic virus M1 (NGOVM) with an increase in the oncolytic effect of up to 9690-fold. The NGOVM has a broader antitumor spectrum and a more robust oncolytic effect in a range of solid tumors. Mechanistically, two critical mutations are identified in the E2 and nsP3 genes, which accelerate the entry of M1 virus by increasing its binding to the Mxra8 receptor and antagonize antiviral responses by inhibiting the activation of PKR and STAT1 in tumor cells, respectively. Importantly, the NGOVM is well tolerated in both rodents and nonhuman primates. This study implies that directed natural evolution is a generalizable approach for developing next-generation OVs with an expanded scope of application and high safety.

In order to address the requirements of scientific multidisciplinary observation in diverse small-scale regions, we have introduced the Buoy-based Cable Seafloor Observatory System (BCSOS). This system offers a distinct advantage in contexts where the use of shorter cables is feasible, contrasting with the lengthy cables typically necessary for conventional observatories. The BCSOS consists of three primary components: the Real-Time Electric Communication (RTEC) Buoy, the Power Information Transmission System (PITS), and the Seafloor Observation Subsystem (SOS). The RTEC Buoy is equipped with instruments for measuring sea surface parameters and serves as a data and power hub. The PITS, comprising a robust EM cable, connects the buoy to the SOS, which houses instruments for seafloor observations. The system is designed for a maximum water depth of 100 m and has an expected lifespan of about 5 years. The BCSOS prototypes were deployed at the Huangqi Peninsula, Fujian Province, and successfully documented the process during Typhoon Doksuri (international code 2305) at the end of July 2023. The recorded data from the BCSOS revealed a significant increase in wave height and period as the storm approached the Huangqi Peninsula. Additionally, the RTEC buoy exhibited a notable response to the large waves. The data analysis revealed a distinct pattern between the buoy response and the direction of wave propagation across various sea conditions, that the buoy’s angular movement in pitch and roll directions follows a regular elliptical distribution corresponding to different wave propagation directions. Upon thorough evaluation, future enhancements to the system are slated to concentrate on refining its design, with a particular emphasis on bolstering stability and enhancing corrosion resistance. These improvements are aimed at cementing the system’s long-term viability and performance within the challenging marine environment.

Autonomous lane-change, a key feature of advanced driver-assistance systems, can enhance traffic efficiency and reduce the incidence of accidents. However, safe driving of autonomous vehicles remains challenging in complex environments. How to perform safe and appropriate lane change is a popular topic of research in the field of autonomous driving. Currently, few papers consider the safety of reinforcement learning in discretionary lane-change scenarios. We introduce safe hybrid-action reinforcement learning into discretionary lane change for the first time and propose the Parameterized Soft Actor–Critic with PID Lagrangian (PASAC-PIDLag) algorithm. Furthermore, we conduct a comparative analysis with Parameterized Soft Actor–Critic (PASAC), which is an unsafe version of PASAC-PIDLag. Both algorithms are employed to train the lane-change strategy to output both discrete lane-change decisions and continuous longitudinal vehicle acceleration. Our simulation results indicate that at a traffic density of 15 vehicles per kilometer (15 veh/km), the PASAC-PIDLag algorithm exhibits superior safety with a collision rate of 0%, outperforming the PASAC algorithm, which has a collision rate of 1%. The generalization assessments reveal that at low traffic density levels, both the PASAC-PIDLag and PASAC algorithms are proficient in attaining zero collision rates. However, at high traffic density levels, although both algorithms result in collisions, PASAC-PIDLag has a much lower collision rate than PASAC.

Most of the current studies on autonomous vehicle decision-making and control based on reinforcement learning are conducted in simulated environments. The training and testing of these studies are carried out under the condition of rule-based microscopic traffic flow, with little consideration regarding migrating them to real or near-real environments. This may lead to performance degradation when the trained model is tested in more realistic traffic scenes. In this study, we propose a method to randomize the driving behavior of surrounding vehicles by randomizing certain parameters of the car-following and lane-changing models of rule-based microscopic traffic flow. We trained policies with deep reinforcement learning algorithms under the domain-randomized rule-based microscopic traffic flow in freeway and merging scenes and then tested them separately in rule-based and high-fidelity microscopic traffic flows. The results indicate that the policies trained under domain-randomized traffic flow have significantly better success rates and episodic rewards compared to those trained under non-randomized traffic flow.

This study focuses on a crucial task in the field of autonomous driving, autonomous lane change. Autonomous lane change plays a pivotal role in improving traffic flow, alleviating driver burden, and reducing the risk of traffic accidents. However, due to the complexity and uncertainty of lane-change scenarios, the functionality of autonomous lane change still faces challenges. In this research, we conducted autonomous lane-change simulations using both deep reinforcement learning (DRL) and model predictive control (MPC). Specifically, we used the parameterized soft actor–critic (PASAC) algorithm to train a DRL-based lane-change strategy to output both discrete lane-change decisions and continuous longitudinal vehicle acceleration. We also used MPC for lane selection based on the smallest predictive car-following costs for the different lanes. For the first time, we compared the performance of DRL and MPC in the context of lane-change decisions. The simulation results indicated that, under the same reward/cost function and traffic flow, both MPC and PASAC achieved a collision rate of 0%. PASAC demonstrated a comparable performance to MPC in terms of average rewards/costs and vehicle speeds.

There is a pressing global need to increase the use of renewable energy sources and limit greenhouse gas emissions. Towards this goal, highly efficient and molecularly selective chemical processes that operate under mild conditions are critical. Plasmonic photocatalysis uses optically-resonant metallic nanoparticles and their resulting plasmonic, electronic, and phononic light-matter interactions to drive chemical reactions. The promise of simultaneous high-efficiency and product-selective reactions with plasmon photocatalysis provides a compelling opportunity to rethink how chemistry is achieved. Plasmonic nanoparticles serve as nanoscale ‘antennas’ that enable strong light–matter interactions, surpassing the light-harvesting capabilities one would expect purely from their size. Complex composite structures, combining engineered light harvesters with more chemically active components, are a focal point of current research endeavors. In this review, we provide an overview of recent advances in plasmonic catalysis. We start with a discussion of the relevant mechanisms in photochemical transformations and explain hot-carrier generation and distributions from several ubiquitous plasmonic antennae. Then we highlight three important types of catalytic processes for sustainable chemistry: ammonia synthesis, hydrogen production and CO2 reduction. To help elucidate the reaction mechanism, both state-of-art electromagnetic calculations and quantum mechanistic calculations are discussed. This review provides insights to better understand the mechanism of plasmonic photocatalysis with a variety of metallic and composite nanostructures toward designing and controlling improved platforms for green chemistry in the future.

Abstract Background Although XPO6, one of the Exportin family members, functions in malignant progression of certain types of cancer, its role in prostate cancer (PCa) has not been elucidated. Herein, we investigated the oncogenic effect and clarified the downstream mechanism of XPO6 in PCa cells. Methods We detected the expression level of XPO6 in PCa tissues by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and analyzed the correlation between clinicopathological characteristics and XPO6 level based on TCGA database. The effects of XPO6 in the proliferation and migration or resistance to docetaxel (DTX) in PCa cells were assessed using CCK8, colony formation, wound-healing and Transwell assays. Mice experiments were performed to investigate the role of XPO6 in tumor progression and DTX effect in vivo. Further, functional analysis of DEGs revealed the correlation of XPO6 with Hippo pathway and XPO6 could promote the expression and nuclear translocation of YAP1 protein. Furthermore, blocking Hippo pathway with YAP1 inhibitor leads to the loss of XPO6-mediated regulation of biological functions. Results XPO6 was highly expressed and positively correlated with the clinicopathological characteristics of PCa. Functional experiments indicated that XPO6 could promote tumor development and DTX resistance in PCa. Mechanistically, we further confirmed that XPO6 could regulate Hippo pathway via mediating YAP1 protein expression and nuclear translocation thereby promoting PCa progression and chemotherapeutic resistance. Conclusion In conclusion, our research reveals that XPO6 potentially function as an oncogene and promotes DTX resistance of PCa, suggesting that XPO6 could be both a potential prognostic marker as well as a therapeutic target to effectively overcome DTX resistance.

Abstract Background and aims Clinical comparisons of angiotensin receptor–neprilysin inhibitors (ARNI) and sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) treatment in patients with HFrEF and T2DM are limited. This study evaluated the clinical outcomes and treatment benefits of SGLT2i versus ARNI treatment in patients with HFrEF and T2DM in a large real-world data set. Methods We identified 1487 patients with HFrEF and T2DM who were undergoing ARNI or SGLT2i treatment for the first time (n = 647 and 840, respectively) between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2021, and with clinical outcomes of CV death, hospitalization for heart failure (HHF), composite CV outcomes, or renal outcomes. Results The HHF risk reduction conferred by SGLT2i treatment was more significant than that conferred by ARNI treatment (37.7% vs. 30.4%; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.06–1.41). SGLT2i use conferred significantly greater renal protection against the doubling of serum creatinine (13.1% vs. 9.3%; 95% CI 1.05–1.75), an estimated glomerular filtration rate decline of > 50% (24.9% vs. 20.0%; 95% CI 1.02–1.45), and progression to end-stage renal disease (3.1% vs. 1.5%; 95% CI 1.62–5.23). The improvements in echocardiographic parameters were comparable between the groups. Conclusions Compared with ARNI treatment, SGLT2i treatment was associated with a more significant HHF risk reduction and greater preservation of renal function in patients with HFrEF and T2DM. This study also supports the prioritization of SGLT2i use in these patients when patients' conditions or economic resources need to be considered.
