Abstract

In order to solve the problem of efficient trajectory control of centimeter-scale robots with small size, a small jellyfish robot (JRT) is designed and developed, which is composed of an air chamber, a center of gravity adjustment device and a jellyfish-inspired thruster with a size of only ⌀6.8 cm × 5.3 cm. Its trajectory can be effectively controlled underwater through the coordination of the center of gravity adjustment device and jellyfish-inspired thruster. Underwater experiments verify the function of JRT swimming and hovering in the vertical direction, horizontal directional swimming, and horizontal ejection. By analyzing the force balance relationship and motion state data of JRT swimming in the vertical and horizontal directions, a trajectory control scheme is proposed. The speed of horizontal directional swimming can reach 1.7 cm/s, and the trajectory deviation is 0—3.4 cm, which shows that the JRT has a good trajectory control ability and is expected to be applied in underwater resource exploration, environmental monitoring, and other fields.

Abstract

Abstract The deformation of armchair single-walled carbon nanotube under transverse electric field has been investigated using density functional theory. The results show that the circular cross-sections of the nanotubes are deformed to elliptic ones, in which the tube diameter along the field direction is increased, whereas the diameter perpendicular to the field direction is reduced. The electronic structures of the deformed nanotubes were also studied. The ratio of the major diameter to the minor diameter of the elliptic cross-section was used to estimate the degree of the deformation. It is found that this ratio depends on the field strength and the tube diameter. However, the field direction has little role in the deformation. Abstract

Abstract Porous anodic alumina (PAA) has been intensively studied in past decade due to its applications for fabricating nanostructured materials. Since PAA’s pore diameter, thickness and shape vary too much, a systematical study on the methods of morphology characterization is meaningful and essential for its proper development and utilization. In this paper, we present detailed AFM, SEM and TEM studies on PAA and its evolvements with abundant microstructures, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method. The sample preparation, testing skills and morphology analysis are discussed, especially on the differentiation during characterizing complex cross-sections and ultrasmall nanopores. The versatility of PAAs is also demonstrated by the diversity of PAAs’ microstructure.

Abstract

Abstract Anodization of Al foil under low voltages of 1–10 V was conducted to obtain porous anodic aluminas (PAAs) with ultrasmall nanopores. Regular nanopore arrays with pore diameter 6–10 nm were realized in four different electrolytes under 0–30°C according to the AFM, FESEM, TEM images and current evolution curves. It is found that the pore diameter and interpore distance, as well as the barrier layer thickness, are not sensitive to the applied potentials and electrolytes, which is totally different from the rules of general PAA fabrication. The brand-new formation mechanism has been revealed by the AFM study on the samples anodized for very short durations of 2–60 s. It is discovered for the first time that the regular nanoparticles come into being under 1–10 V at the beginning of the anodization and then serve as a template layer dominating the formation of ultrasmall nanopores. Under higher potentials from 10 to 40 V, the surface nanoparticles will be less and less and nanopores transform into general PAAs.

Abstract

Combining the merits of battery and supercapacitor into a single device represents a major scientific and technological challenge. From a design perspective, electrode material plays a key role in the device and the fundamental difficulty lies in incorporating a high density of active sites into a stable material with excellent charge transfer kinetics. Here, the synthesis is reported of a nearly full‐oxygen‐functionalized 2D conductive transition metal carbide (Ti3C2Oy) with ultrahigh density of Ti─O/═O redox‐active sites by nucleophilic substitution and in situ oxidation under the presence of a proper electrophilic reagent (K+). The fabricated electrode delivered exceptionally high gravimetric and volumetric capacitance (1,082 F g−1 and 3,182 F cm−3 in a potential window of 0.85 V, approximating the theoretical capacity of many transition metal oxides), fast charging/discharging in tens of seconds across a wide range of temperature (−70 to 60 °C), and excellent structural and chemical stability. These promising results provide avenues for the development of high‐energy, high‐power storage devices as well as electromagnetic shielding, and electronic and optoelectronic devices.
