Ginsenoside Rh2 is one of the major bioactive ginsenosides in Panax ginseng. Although Rh2 is known to enhance immune cells activity for treatment of cancer, its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects have yet to be determined. In this study, we investigated the effects of Rh2 on spared nerve injury (SNI)-induced neuropathic pain and elucidated the potential mechanisms. We found that various doses of Rh2 intrathecal injection dose-dependently attenuated SNI-induced mechanical allodynia and thermal hyperalgesia. Rh2 also inhibited microglia and astrocyte activation in the spinal cord of a murine SNI model. Rh2 treatment inhibited SNI-induced increase of proinflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1 and IL-6. Expression of miRNA-21, an endogenous ligand of Toll like receptor (TLR)8 was also decreased. Rh2 treatment blocked the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway by inhibiting of phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase expression. Finally, intrathecal injection of TLR8 agonist VTX-2337 reversed the analgesic effect of Rh2. These results indicated that Rh2 relieved SNI-induced neuropathic pain via inhibiting the miRNA-21-TLR8-MAPK signaling pathway, thus providing a potential application of Rh2 in pain therapy.

Folic acid- (FA-) induced kidney injury is characterized by the tubule damage due to the disturbance of the antioxidant system and subsequent interstitial fibrosis. FG-4592 is an inhibitor of prolyl hydroxylase of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF), an antioxidant factor. The present study investigated the protective role of FG-4592 pretreatment at the early stage of the kidney injury and long-term impact on the progression of renal fibrosis. FG-4592 was administrated two days before FA injection in mice. On the second day after FA injection, the mice with FG-4592 pretreatment showed an improved renal function, compared with those without FG-4592 pretreatment, indicated by biochemical and histological parameters; meanwhile, the cellular content of iron, malondialdehyde, and 4-hydroxynonenal histologically decreased, implying the suppression of iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation. Simultaneously, upregulation of HIF-1α was found, along with Nrf2 activation, which was reflected by increased nuclear translocation and high-expression of downstream proteins, including heme-oxygenase1, glutathione peroxidase4, and cystine/glutamate transporter, as well as ferroportin. Correspondingly, the elevated levels of antioxidative enzymes and glutathione, as well as reduced iron accumulation, were observed, suggesting a lower risk of occurrence of ferroptosis with FG-4592 pretreatment. This was confirmed by reversed pathological parameters and improved renal function in FA-treated mice with the administration of ferrostatin-1, a specific ferroptosis inhibitor. Furthermore, a signal pathway study indicated that Nrf2 activation was associated with increased phosphorylation of Akt and GSK-3β, verified by the use of an inhibitor of the PI3K that phosphorylates Akt. Moreover, FG-4592 pretreatment also decreased macrophage infiltration and expression of inflammatory factors TNF-α and IL-1β. On the 14th day after FA injection, FG-4592 pretreatment decreased collagen deposition and expression of fibrosis biomarkers. These findings suggest that the protective role of FG-4592 pretreatment is achieved mainly by decreasing ferroptosis at the early stage of FA-induced kidney injury via Akt/GSK-3β-mediated Nrf2 activation, which retards the fibrosis progression.

This study aims to identify older people’s home- and community-based care (HCBC) service need patterns and explore the role of living arrangement and filial piety in affecting such patterns. A total of 556 older people were selected in Beijing, China. Latent class analysis and multinomial logistic regression were adopted to identify the service need patterns and the influencing factors. A three-class model of service need patterns was explored (high-needs group, moderate-needs group, and low-needs group). Living arrangement was related to HCBC service need patterns. Compared with the high-needs group, those living with at least two family members were more likely to express low needs or moderate needs. Living arrangement was a moderator for the effect of filial piety on HCBC needs. Greater recognition of the effects of living arrangement and filial piety should enrich the Andersen model and provide a robust stimulus for long-term care policy development and for service delivery and social work.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a new and large group of non-coding RNA molecules that are abundantly expressed in the central nervous system. However, very little is known about their roles in traumatic brain injury. In this study, we firstly screened differentially expressed circRNAs in normal and injured brain tissues of mice after traumatic brain injury. We found that the expression of circLphn3 was substantially decreased in mouse models of traumatic brain injury and in hemin-treated bEnd.3 (mouse brain cell line) cells. After overexpressing circLphn3 in bEnd.3 cells, the expression of the tight junction proteins, ZO-1, ZO-2, and occludin, was upregulated, and the expression of miR-185-5p was decreased. In bEnd.3 cells transfected with miR-185-5p mimics, the expression of ZO-1 was decreased. Dual-luciferase reporter assays showed that circLphn3 bound to miR-185-5p, and that miR-185-5p bound to ZO-1. Additionally, circLphn3 overexpression attenuated the hemin-induced high permeability of the in vitro bEnd.3 cell model of the blood-brain barrier, while miR-185-5p transfection increased the permeability. These findings suggest that circLphn3, as a molecular sponge of miR-185-5p, regulates tight junction proteins’ expression after traumatic brain injury, and it thereby improves the permeability of the blood-brain barrier. Because of its rapidly aging population, Hong Kong faces great challenges in the provision and financing of long-term care (LTC) and needs to explore sustainable funding mechanisms. However, there is a paucity of research on older people's willingness to pay (WTP) for LTC services in Hong Kong. This study utilizes data collected in Hong Kong in 2011 (N = 536) to investigate older people's receptivity to this financing mode by assessing their co-payments for a community care service voucher scheme and then testing how potential factors affect respondents' amount of co-payment. Results show that respondents' WTP was positively associated with family financial support, financial condition, and positive attitudes toward this novel policy and negatively associated with family caregiving support. Direct and moderating effects of family financial support on WTP were found. The policy-related implications of LTC financing to improve older people's acceptance of co-payment mechanisms, financial condition, and shared responsibility of care are discussed.

Objective: The aim of this is to compare the immunotherapeutic effects of human colorectal cancer antigen GA733-2 fused to the Fc fragment of antibody (GA733-2-Fc) and to Fc and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) retention motif KDEL (GA733-2-Fc-KDEL). Materials and Methods: Recombinant GA733-2-Fc and GA733-2-Fc-KDEL were produced from infiltrated Nicotiana benthamiana leaves and purified by affinity chromatography. Glycan structures were determined by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The allergic and immunogenic responses of recombinant GA733-2-Fc and GA733-2-Fc-KDEL were estimated in an intraperitoneally immunized mouse. The tumor regression effect of recombinant GA733-2-Fc and GA733-2-Fc-KDEL was examined using a colorectal carcinoma CT-26 animal model. Results: Recombinant GA733-2-Fc contained plant-specific glycan structures including β(1,2)-xylose and α(1,3)-fucose whereas recombinant GA733-2-Fc-KDEL contained oligomannose type glycan structures. Mice immunized intraperitoneally with recombinant GA733-2-Fc and GA733-2-Fc-KDEL elicited strong GA733-2-Fc-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgA serum antibody responses. Recombinant GA733-2-Fc-KDEL reduced the production of GA733-2-Fc-specific IgE. Recombinant GA733-2-Fc-KDEL increased the production of interferon-γ. Intraperitoneal preimmunization with recombinant GA733-2-Fc and GA733-2-Fc-KDEL regressed tumor growth in a colorectal carcinoma CT-26 animal model. The tumor regression effect induced by recombinant GA733-2-Fc-KDEL was greater than that induced by recombinant GA733-2-Fc. The human and mouse colorectal carcinoma cell binding activities of recombinant GA733-2-Fc-KDEL-immunized sera were higher than those of recombinant GA733-2-Fc. Conclusions: Our results suggest that GA733-2-Fc conjugated to ER-retention motif KDEL is a more efficient antigen to prevent tumor growth induced by colorectal carcinoma and minimize an allergic response.

Purpose Long-distance caregiving (LDC) technologies play a significant role in enabling distant care and facilitating living-alone older adults to keep socially connected. However, there is scarce research exploring the older adults’ attitudes towards and intention to use such technologies. This paper is based on a systematic review of existing literature to explore the multifarious factors influencing independent community-living older adults’ attitudes towards and intention to use LDC technologies. Methods Articles published in English between 2006 and 2020 were reviewed by searching electronic databases of PubMed, ProQuest, EBSCOhost. The inclusion criteria were limited to quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods studies that involved: 1) distant caregiving; 2) older adults aged 60 years or above, who were living alone or with only their spouse in the community (even though the samples might also involve other non-older adults); 3) technologies including ICT-based devices, systems, or programs enabling data transmission were used; 4), intention to use or behavioral usage in regard to the technologies were reported or discussed. Results In total, 41 out of 8674 articles were included. Both determinants and moderators of affecting the use of the ICT-based LDC technologies were identified with theoretical guidance. To summarize, there are personal factors involved, such as personality, concerns regarding security and privacy, health conditions, requisite knowledge, financial conditions, and influence from significant others, encompassing formal and informal caregivers; and factors related to the devices, in terms of their user-friendliness and functionality. Conclusion This review highlights the importance of striking a good balance between functionality and privacy concerns, besides considering the direct and indirect cost to users. LDC technology education should be promoted at the societal level to facilitate older adults’ better understanding of the device utilities by enhancing their technological literacy. Implications for various stakeholders to cope with the challenges of an aging population are also discussed.

The aims of this study were to assess the impairment levels of users and waitlisted applicants for Hong Kong's Integrated Home Care Services (Ordinary Cases) (IHCS [OC]), reveal their possible hidden needs and potential demand for higher level services, assess their unmet needs for IHCS (OC) and explore whether not using IHCS (OC) was associated with any deterioration in impairment. In all, 567 respondents were clinically assessed twice, over a 6-month interval, by the Minimal Data Set Home Care questionnaire. The results showed that some moderately or severely impaired respondents had only limited access to higher level services. Some respondents with either no impairment or only low-level impairment had applied for higher level services. Most waitlisted applicants had not received any IHCS (OC), even after 6 months of waiting. Using IHCS (OC) or not had no significant impact on the deterioration in impairment. Several ways of improving home and community care services are discussed.

Promoting life satisfaction in later life has long been both a policy and practice challenge. This study examined the association between older adults' self-image and life satisfaction, and that between their intergenerational relationships and life satisfaction. Given that sources of wellbeing for older men and women may vary due to socially constructed realities in early life, gender differences were also investigated in the correlates of life satisfaction. A face-to-face questionnaire survey was conducted in 2014 with a sample of 1,099 older adults aged 60 years and over from four cities in China. Findings of this study showed that older adults’ self-image and intergenerational relationships were significantly associated with their life satisfaction after controlling for certain socio-demographic characteristics, and health and self-care ability. The correlates of life satisfaction were shown to differ between older men and women. Programmes and Services should be developed for older adults to explore and identify positive aspects of themselves, to improve their relationships with their adult children, and to foster a more positive image of ageing in wider society. In addition, service providers should take gender differences in correlates of life satisfaction into account in service and intervention programme development.

ABSTARCTPoverty alleviation has long been high on the political agenda of the Chinese government. The current research is intended to evaluate the urban Minimum Livelihood Guarantee Scheme (MLG) scheme, which is serving as the primary anti-poverty policy measure for individuals and families in China. In this article, we construct an evaluation framework, incorporating the concepts of equity, efficiency and effectiveness, which are the most essential factors in the performance evaluation in public sectors. Guided by this framework, a series of indicators were developed to scrutinize the design, implementation and impact of MLG scheme. On the whole, MLG plays an essential role in poverty alleviation among urban residents, however, faced with multifaceted needs of the recipients, urban MLG can only provide them a minimum income, but not guarantee the basic livelihood, especially for those who have to pay for healthcare and children’s education. This study was designed to validate the newly developed Filial Piety Scale for Chinese Elders (FPSCE) in measuring elders’ filial norms in contemporary China by administering questionnaire survey with 521 elders aged 70 years and older in Beijing, China. Validity and reliability tests were applied. Through exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, a conceptually meaningful three-factor model with 12 items was obtained, consisting of “caring for parents,” “familial entirety,” and “familial aspiration.” The FPSCE showed good internal consistency, satisfactory discriminant validity, criterion-related validity, and significant correlations for some variables related to demographic characteristics, health status, and financial condition. The construction of the FPSCE indicates that elders’ understanding of filial piety and their expectation of their children may have changed. The FPSCE shows that contemporary elders in China hold less authoritative but more reciprocal stances toward filial piety. The FPSCE can be used to advance the contextualized understanding of filial piety in contemporary Chinese societies, to help facilitate the development of family-friendly policies in aging societies, and to meet the challenges associated with an accelerating aging population.

The adipokine Chemerin is reported to regulate adipogenesis and glucose homeostasis in vivo and in 3T3-L1 cells. Our team is focused on the role of Chemerin in metabolism and intramuscular adipocyte differentiation because intramuscular fat is the basic material for the formation of marbling in livestock and poultry meat. In this study, bovine intramuscular mature adipocytes were cultured in medium with Chemerin, and the process of lipolysis of mature adipocytes and the adipogenesis of de-differentiated preadipocytes were investigated. The results showed that Chemerin induced significant lipolytic metabolism in intramuscular mature adipocytes, indicated by increased levels of glycerol, FFA, and up-regulated expression of the lipolysis critical factors HSL, LPL, and leptin. Meanwhile, the expressions of adipogenic key factors PPARγ, C/EBPα, and A-FABP were decreased by Chemerin during lipolysis or dedifferentiation in mature adipocytes. The de-differentiated preadipocytes could re-differentiate into mature adipocytes. Intriguingly, the formation of cells' lipid droplets was promoted by Chemerin during preadipocyte differentiation. In addition, mRNA and protein expressions of PPARγ, C/EBPα, and A-FABP were up-regulated by Chemerin during preadipocytes differentiation. These results suggest that Chemerin promotes lipolysis in mature adipocytes and induces adipogenesis during preadipocyte re-differentiation, further indicating a dual role for Chemerin in the deposition of intramuscular fat in ruminant animals.

Background/Aims: It is difficult to predict acute thrombotic cardiovascular events in the clinic. Few studies have reported the presence of plasma exosomes containing microRNAs (miRNAs) in cardiovascular events. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the levels of miR-223, miR-339 and miR-21 in plasma exosomes before thrombosis in mouse models of carotid tandem stenosis, as well as the mechanisms underlying the origin and function of these exosomal miRNAs. Methods: Plasma samples were collected from the carotid tandem stenosis and sham control groups of our successfully developed atherothrombosis mouse models before thrombosis. Platelets from healthy volunteers and mice were purified to obtain thrombin stimulated platelet-derived exosomes. Exosomes were isolated via differential ultracentrifugation, and western blotting and transmission electron microscopy were used for their identification. The total RNA was extracted, and quantitative real-time PCR was performed to determine the expression levels of miR-223, miR-339 and miR-21. DAVID Tools were used to analyze the pathways that were enriched among the miRNA target genes. Immuno-fluorescence staining was performed to identify the protein expression levels of platelet-derived exosome target genes in vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in vitro and in vivo. Results: The levels of miR-223, miR-339 and miR-21, which are associated with platelet activation, were elevated in pooled mouse plasma exosomes before thrombosis and enriched in thrombin-stimulated platelet-derived exosomes in vitro. Platelet-derived growth factor receptor-beta (PDGFRβ) was a target of these miRNAs, and PDGFRβ expression in vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) was inhibited following incubation with platelet-derived exosomes. Platelet-derived exosomes could also inhibit PDGF-stimulated SMC proliferation. Furthermore, a decrease in PDGFRβ expression was observed in vascular SMCs around thrombotic areas in vivo. Conclusions: Our data indicate that activated platelet-derived exosomes containing miR-223, miR-339 and miR-21 could be transferred into SMCs and inhibit PDGFRβ expression; these exosomal miRNAs may be a biomarker for predicting atherothrombosis.

Vegetation phenology is a good indicator of climate change, because of the close correlation between vegetation and climate. The Daxing'an Mountains, located in Chinese northernmost region, are more sensitive to climate change. Researching the spatio-temporal variation of vegetation phenology in this region is of great significance for assessing the influence of global change on terrestrial ecosystem. According to the eco-geographical zoning of China, the Daxing'an Mountains can be divided into for four eco-geographical regions. In this study, the spatial distribution and dynamics of vegetation phenology in the Daxing'an Mountains were analyzed using 8-km resolution GIMMS NDVI 3g dataset from 1982 to 2012. Results showed that the start of growing season in all partitions exhibited an advancing trend, and the end of growing season in all partitions had an extending trend. Vegetation phenology which was sensitive to the change of meteorological factors had a stronger correlation with temperature than with precipitation for all four eco-geographical regions. There was a significant negative correlation between the start of growing season in the northern region and spring temperature. Except for the south of the Daxing'an Mountains, the ending days of growing season in the other three eco-geographical regions had significant negative correlations with summer precipitation. The change of vegetation phenology in the whole study was obvious along with altitude and latitude.植被与气候的关系十分密切,植被物候可作为全球气候变化的指示器.大兴安岭位于我国最北部,对气候变化较为敏感,研究该区植被物候的时空变化对评估全球变化对陆地生态系统的影响具有重要意义.依据中国生态地理区划图,将大兴安岭划分为4个生态研究区域,本文利用GIMMS NDVI 3g遥感数据集分析1982—2012年大兴安岭整体及各生态地理分区植被物候变化.结果表明: 研究期间,所有分区植被生长季开始日期均表现为提前趋势,生长季结束日期均表现为推迟趋势.植被物候对气候因子变化敏感,尤其是对气温的敏感程度高于降水,其中,北段山地落叶针叶林区植被生长季开始日期与春季温度呈显著负相关;除南段草原区外,其他3个分区植被生长季结束日期均与秋季降水呈显著负相关.从整体来看,植被物候随海拔、纬度的变化趋势明显.

The adipokine Chemerin has been reported to regulate differentiation and metabolism of adipocytes, but the mechanism underlying lipolysis is still largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to explore whether ERK1/2 pathway is involved in regulating Chemerin during bovine intramuscular mature adipocyte lipolysis. Intramuscular mature adipocytes of dairy bull calves were cultured in vitro and were treated with Chemerin or U0126, which is an inhibitor of ERK1/2 pathway. The results showed that TG content in cells was significantly decreased, glycerol and free fatty acid were significantly increased in cell culture media, and the expression of phosphorylated ERK1/2 in cells was increased in Chemerin-treated group, suggested that ERK1/2 pathway was involved in regulation of lipolysis by Chemerin. In addition, the expression of lipolytic-related critical factors ATGL, HSL, LPL, PPARα, UCP3, and CPT1 were upregulated, but the expression of adipogenic key factors, including PPARγ and C/EBPα were downregulated by Chemerin. Interestingly, all the effects of Chemerin on genes expression in intramuscular mature adipocytes or fat tissue were inhibited by U0126, showed that the function of Chemerin to promote adipose decomposition will be significantly weakened if the ERK1/2 pathway is suppressed, and confirmed that ERK1/2 pathway is involved in mediate Chemerin-enhanced lipolysis. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that Chemerin induce intramuscular mature adipocytes lipolysis through activation of the ERK1/2 pathway. Our research at least provide partial mechanisms of Chemerin on lipolysis and deposition of intramuscular fat tissue of dairy bull calves.

Background Alongside changes in society and the economy, the family’s function of taking care of older people is weakening and the formal care mode is becoming more accepted. Older Chinese people are facing diverse choices of long-term care (LTC) modes. Acknowledging this situation, to optimize older people’s arrangements for LTC services and improve quality of later life, this study sets out to explore and make theoretical sense of older people’s LTC needs and to identify the factors influencing their LTC needs. Methods Questionnaire data were collected from 1090 participants in four Chinese cities in 2014. A conceptual framework was established based on the Anderson Model (i.e., predisposing factors, enabling factors, and need factors), and further strengthened by adding several psychosocial factors (i.e. intergenerational relationships, unmet care service needs, and self-image). Multinomial logistic regression was adopted to explore the influencing factors of LTC needs. Participants choosing home-and-community-based care were regarded as the reference group. Results After controlling for predisposing, enabling, and need factors, those with better self-image (OR = 1.027, p = 0.021) and fewer unmet care service needs (OR = 0.936, p = 0.009) were identified as being more likely to choose family care; those with less close intergenerational relationships (OR = 0.676, p = 0.019), fewer unmet care service needs (OR = 0.912, p = 0.027), and better self-image (OR = 1.044, p = 0.026) were more likely to choose institutional care. Gender- and age-related differences in the determinants of LTC needs were observed. Conclusions The findings of this study suggest that professionals and service providers should pay more attention to the important role of psychosocial factors in affecting older people’s LTC needs and be more sensitive to gender- and age-related differences. Effective efforts to improve intergenerational relationships, to further develop care services for older people, and to foster a more positive image of aging should be emphasized.

To make full use of the hyperspectral data, the strong multi-collinearity in the data is supposed to be taken into account. With this study we evaluated three multivariate regression methods which are principal component regression, partial least square regression (PLSR) and stepwise multiple linear regression. Furthermore, to identify reliable winter wheat biomass predictive models, two different types of spectral transformations (continuum removal, first derivative) were combined with the three regression methods, respectively. Amongst these combinations, the respective combination of three regression methods and continuum removal got the highest estimation accuracy, especially, the combination of PLSR and continuum removal (R2=0.715, RMSE=0.218kg/m2). The experimental results demonstrated that PLSR is recommended for highly multi-collinear data sets. The combination of continuum removal and PLSR could improve the estimation accuracy of winter wheat biomass.

The thesis expounded the connotation of cloud platform, and made a comparison between several commercial computing development platforms, for the development of cloud application program with high-efficiency and high-quality. It proposed the general process of developing a kind of cloud application software, and developed a message board cloud application program used in teaching by basing on GFS, GAE platform, as well as realizing data design and management by adopting JDO technology. Practice showed that this research possessed certain theoretical significance and practical application value.

In the combined framework of a multisource and participant-spectator model, we study the elliptic flow as a function of transverse momentum and number of participating nucleons in s N N = 200 GeV Au-Au and s N N = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions and argue that the geometry of the initial overlap region in the collisions determines the experimentally measured azimuthal asymmetries. Our results are approximately in agreement with the data from PHENIX and ALICE collaborations.

The cytotoxic effect of pomolic acid (PA), a pentacyclic triterpene isolated from flowers of Osmanthus fragrans var. aurantiacus Makino, was investigated in SK-OV-3 human ovarian adenocarcinoma cells. PA dose-dependently inhibited the viability of SK-OV-3 cells. PA-induced apoptosis was further characterized by detection of cell surface annexin V and sub-G1 apoptotic cell populations. The number of cells immunostained with annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) increased following treatment with PA. The sub-G1 cell populations also increased in PA-treated SK-OV-3 cells. PA induced the activation of caspase-8, -9 and -3, critical mediators of apoptosis signaling. PA decreased the mitochondrial transmembrane potential (ΔΨ(m)), resulting in the activation of caspase-9. In addition, PA increased the expression of tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL)-mediated apoptosis signaling-related death receptor 5 (DR5), mediating caspase-8-involved extrinsic pathway. Taken together, our results indicate that PA induces apoptosis in SK-OV-3 cells, which is mediated by the mitochondrial-mediated intrinsic and death receptor-induced extrinsic pathways.

Background: Motivation for learning, as an important aspect pertaining to studying the phenomenon of elder learning, is not fully explored in Hong Kong. Objective: This study was designed to create a measurement to investigate the possible diversity of motivations of elder learners, so as to harness the older people’s potential in learning and thus capitalize on productive ageing. Methods: 283 older learners participating in learning activities at elder centres were interviewed. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to identify the latent factors in the learning motivation scale. Reliability of the scale was assessed. ANOVA testing was used to assess for differences in learning motivation by different socio-demographic variables. Results: Four dimensions of older Chinese adults’ motivations for engaging in learning have been found: ‘keeping up with and contributing to society’, ‘fulfilment’, ‘social integration’ and ‘reemployment’. Elders with higher education levels were more likely to seek out opportunities for lifelong learning. Younger (aged 55 to 64) participants of learning activities were more likely than their older (aged 75 or above) counterparts to learn for fulfillment. Older adults who had volunteer experience were more motivated to engage in learning through keeping up with and contributing to society. Conclusion: Older learners in Hong Kong participated in learning for self-fulfilment and development, contributing to society, maintaining social connection, and acquisition of knowledge and qualifications for possible (re)employment. Some of their socio-demographic features might influence their motivations. Learning programmes could be designed and improved based on older adults’ motivations to meet their needs.

Heat stress can weaken the immune system and even increase livestock’s susceptibility to disease. MicroRNA (miR) is short non-coding RNA that functions in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression and some phenotypes. Our recent study found that miR-181a is highly expressed in the serum of heat-stressed Holstein cows, but the potential function of miR-181a is still not clarified. In this study, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), isolated from Holstein cows’ peripheral blood, were used to investigate the effects of miR-181a inhibitor on heat stress damage. Our results showed that significant apoptosis and oxidative damage were induced by heat stress in PBMCs. However, with apoptosis, the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and content of malondialdehyde (MDA) were reduced, while the content of glutathione (GSH) and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) were increased even under heat stress conditions after transfecting miR-181a inhibitors to PBMCs. Meanwhile, mRNA expression of bax and caspase-3 was significantly decreased, but mRNA expression of bcl-2 was increased in transfected PBMCs. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that down-regulation of miR-181a can reduce heat stress damage in PBMCs of Holstein cows.

We investigate the dependence of the elliptic flow υ 2 on the transverse momentum P T for charged and strange hadrons produced in Cu-Cu collisions at high energy by using a multi-source ideal gas model. A detailed comparison with the experimental results from Cu-Cu collisions at $$\sqrt {s_{NN} }$$ = 62.4 GeV and 200 GeV, measured by the STAR collaboration, is discussed. Over wider range of P T , the experimental results υ 2(P T ) are well described by this model.

The major limitation of using existing vegetation indices for crop biomass estimation is that it approaches a saturation level asymptotically for a certain range of biomass. In order to resolve this problem, band depth analysis and partial least square regression (PLSR) were combined to establish winter wheat biomass estimation model in the present study. The models based on the combination of band depth analysis and PLSR were compared with the models based on common vegetation indexes from the point of view of estimation accuracy, subsequently. Band depth analysis was conducted in the visible spectral domain (550-750 nm). Band depth, band depth ratio (BDR), normalized band depth index, and band depth normalized to area were utilized to represent band depth information. Among the calibrated estimation models, the models based on the combination of band depth analysis and PLSR reached higher accuracy than those based on the vegetation indices. Among them, the combination of BDR and PLSR got the highest accuracy (R2 = 0.792, RMSE = 0.164 kg x m(-2)). The results indicated that the combination of band depth analysis and PLSR could well overcome the saturation problem and improve the biomass estimation accuracy when winter wheat biomass is large.

To explore the relationship and interaction of elevated fasting glucose and hypertension on cardiocerebral vascular disease.10 054 males and females were recruited for our cross-sectional study during May 2007 to August 2007. Unconditional logistic regression was used to analysis the relationship between fasting glucose and hypertension on cardiocerebral vascular disease. A product of fasting glucose and hypertension was added to the logistic regression model to evaluate the multiplicative interaction and relative excess risk of interaction (RERI), attributable proportion (AP) of interaction and synergy index (S) was applied to evaluate the additive interaction of the two factors. Bootstrap was used to calculate 95% confidence intervals (CI) of RERI, AP and S.After adjusting age, gender, smoking, drinking, body mass index (BMI) and region, the product of fasting glucose and hypertension was not statistically significant, which means there was no multiplicative interaction between the two. But the additive indexes RERI, AP and S with 95%CI of diabetes and hypertension were 0.64 (0.03, 1.25), 0.27 (0.01, 0.47) and 1.83 (1.02, 5.13) respectively, which means significant additive interaction was shown between the two on cardiovascular disease but not no stroke. And there were no additive interaction between impaired fasting glucose on cardiovascular disease or stroke.Hypertension was independently related to cardiovascular disease and stroke in Beijing citizens, and diabetes were independently related to stroke. There was additive interaction between diabetes and hypertension on cardiovascular disease.

To investigate the relationship between marital status and prevalence of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) among Beijing residents.From May to August 2007, 10 054 residents were interviewed to collect demographic and biochemistry information. Generalized linear mixed model was used to determine the relationship between marital status and prevalence of PAD in terms of OR and corresponding 95% confidence intervals.After adjusting the traditional risk factors including age, area, lipid, serum glucose, blood pressure, central obesity, smoking, drinking and physical activities for PAD, relationship between marital status and prevalence of PAD was found both at the female and male groups of those with 45 years or older. Compared with married men, OR and 95% confidence interval of PAD for unmarried men were 1.56 (0.39 - 6.35) and 1.61 (0.77 - 3.35) for those with 45 years younger and older respectively, while compared with married women, OR and 95% confidence interval of PAD for unmarried women were 0.75 (0.22 - 2.57) and 1.78 (1.23 - 2.58) for those with 45 years younger and older respectively. Significant differences (all P0.01) were found between married and unmarried women of 45 years or older in terms of age, waist circumstances, systolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein and smoking.Peripheral arterial disease was related to marital status for women of 45 years or older among Beijing residents. Estrogen level and the distribution of other PAD risk factors might contribute to the observed finding.

To explore the effect of acute smoking on vascular endothelial function, arterial stiffness and the possible underlying mechanisms.We measured the endothelial function and arterial stiffness in 50 healthy chronic smokers before and after acute smoking with EndoPAT2000. The test was carried out on two separate finger tips. The endothelial function was evaluated by PAT ratio of the finger tip and systemic arterial stiffness was evaluated by augmentation index (AI). Plasma soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) before and 20 min after acute smoking were measured with enzyme linked immuno sorbent assay.The PAT ratio was decreased (1.87 ± 0.40 vs. 1.73 ± 0.28, P = 0.004) while AI was significantly increased after acute smoking (2.94% ± 21.77% vs. 7.11% ± 20.65%, P = 0.01). There was no significant changes in sICAM [(306.5 ± 76.1) µg/L vs. (315.7 ± 90.9) µg/L, P = 0.402], but tPA [7.87 (5.41 - 10.08) µg/L vs. 5.77 (3.77 - 9.68) µg/L, P0.01] was significantly decreased after smoking.Smoking could acutely affect endothelia function, arterial stiffness and deteriorate the activity of fibrinolytic system which could lead to coronary thrombosis in smokers.

To investigate the prevalence and percentage of dyslipidemia awareness among overweight and obese residents in Beijing community.Cross-sectional data of 9786 subjects from capital cholesterol education and intervention program (CCEIP) were analyzed. Participants were divided into 3 groups (Normal, overweight and obese) based on body mass index (BMI). Blood lipid levels were determined from overnight fasting plasma samples. Questionnaires were collected to estimate awareness of dyslipidemia.(1) Blood lipids levels were positively correlated with BMI (r = 0.17, 0.18, -0.26 and 0.35 between total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglyceride and BMI, respectively, all P0.01). (2) Prevalence of dyslipidemia increased in proportion with increase of BMI. The age-standardized prevalence of dyslipidemia of normal, overweight and obese population was 23. 9%, 43.3% and 65.4% in men and 17.9%, 29.2% and 42.3% in women. Dyslipidemia was more frequent in obese men than obese women (65.4% vs. 42.3%, P0.01). However, this gender difference decreased gradually with the increase of age. Risk of hypercholesterolemia, high LDL-C, low HDL-C and hypertriglyceridemia in obese men was 1.6, 2.9, 2.4, and 2.7 folders higher than in the normal body weight men and was 1.3, 1.9, 1.7 and 2.1 folders higher in obese women than in normal body weight women. (3) Unexpectedly, the percentage of dyslipidemia awareness in overweight and obese population was not significantly higher than in the normal body weight group (P0.05).The prevalence of dyslipidemia was high while the percentage of dyslipidemia awareness was rather low in obese population. Aggressive intervention should be taken in obese population, especially in the young obese men, to effectively reduce dyslipidemia.

To investigate the prevalence of dyslipidemia and borderline dyslipidemia and other coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factors in residents from Beijing communities.Resident samples were selected by random cluster multistage method. Serum lipid level and CHD factors were obtained through questionnaire, physical examination and biochemical analysis during June 2007 to August 2007 from 10 054 residents.Age- and sex-adjusted standardized prevalence of hypercholesterolemia, high low-density lipoprotein cholesterolemia, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterolemia, and triglyceridemia were 9.3%, 2.56%, 18.79% and 16.84%, respectively. Incidence of borderline hypercholesterolemia was 23.96%. Incidence of dyslipidemia and borderline dyslipidemia was 31.23% and 23.30% respectively, 71.17% residents have at least 1 CHD major risk factor and 20.23% residents were in borderline CHD risks. Prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, smoking and obese was 41.57%, 11.08%, 35.81% and 22.89%, respectively. The odds ratio for dyslipidemia (95% confidence interval) in residents having 1 borderline CHD risk factor (RF), 2 RF, and 3 RF versus none RF was 1.668, (95%CI: 1.319 - 2.110), 2.537 (95%CI: 1.989 - 3.235), and 3.203 (95%CI: 2.007 - 5.114).The prevalence of dyslipidemia of residents from Beijing communities is higher the average level of China (25.1%). Over 1 out of 5 residents were in increased risk for borderline dyslipidemia or CHD risks. Intensive control of dyslipidemia and CHD risk factors are warranted in Beijing residents.

To study the difference in prevalence of major risk factors of coronary heart disease (CHD) in resident from Beijing communities in different age groups so as to offer suggestions for prevention of CHD in Beijing.The samples were selected by random cluster multistage method. Serum lipid level and CHD factors were determined through questionnaire, physical examination and biochemical detection for 10 054 subjects in Beijing communities during June 2007 to August 2007. According to age, the subjects were divided into 3 groups: 20 - 44 yr group, 45 - 59 yr group andor = 60 yr group.After age and sex standardization the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, diabetes, smoking and obesity was 9.30%, 41.57%, 10.18%, 35.81% and 22.89% respectively. The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia, hypertension and diabetes showed an rising trend with advancing age (trend chi(2): 15.6, 31.7 and 18.0, all P0.001). The group of 45 - 59 yr had the highest prevalence in smoking and obesity 28% and 25.27% respectively. Over 30% in the groups of 45 - 59 yr andor = 60 yr were in the borderline of hypercholesterolemia and hypertension and over 40% were overweight. After age and sex standardization, 67.15% of community residents had at least 1 CHD risk factor, 21.37% and 8.50% 2 or over 3 CHD risk factors. As compared with group 20 - 44 yr, the odds ratio (95%CI) for clustering of CHD risk factors in groups 45 - 59 yr andor = 60 yr were 2.63 (95%CI 2.371 - 2.924) and 4.3 (95%CI 3.764 - 4.913) respectively. The odds ratio (95%CI) for clustering of CHD risk factors for male vs female was 4.392 (95%CI 3.938 - 4.899).The prevalence of CHD major risk factors of Beijing community residents is high. Groups of 45 - 59 yr andor = 60 yr have a higher prevalence and clustering of CHD major risk factors than 20 - 44 yr group. So these age groups deserve a higher priority of comprehensive prevention and control strategies of CHD.

To evaluate the abstinence rate and relapse rate of smoker with ACS after discharged from hospital, to evaluate the effect of simple smoking cessation interventions.150 smokers with ACS were collected and was divided into simple intervention group (n = 87) and control group (n = 63), respectively, followed up for 6 months. 2 months, 6 months abstinence rate, relapse rate were compared between two groups, logistic regression model was used to analyzed the relevant factors for relapse.The smoking rate in patients with ACS was 31.14%, 6-month continuous abstinence rate and 6-month relapse rate was 64.6%, 36.4%, respectively. 6-month continuous abstinence rate and relapse rate between simple quit-smoking intervention group and control group showed no difference. Nicotine dependence score more than 4 points can be used as predictor of relapse.The smoking rate and the abstinence rate of smoker with ACS is higher than the general population, simple quit-smoking intervention do not increase the success rate of quit-smoking, indicated the need to strengthen the intervention in patients with ACS and smoking.

To compare the prognostic value of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and GRACE score in patients with acute coronary syndrome.A total of 246 patients with chest pain to hospital time24 hours were followed up to 30 days. Admission plasma B-type natriuretic peptide was measured by point-of-care. Endpoints included death, reinfarction, recurrent ischemia and new onset of congestive heart failure. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate prognostic value of BNP and GRACE score. The logistic regression models were used to assess the prognostic contribution of BNP level and GRACE score.The mean age was (67.6 +/- 12.0) years (61.8% males) and ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) was diagnosed in 135 patients (54.9%). During the follow up, 34 endpoints (13.8%) were recorded including 9 deaths (3.7%). The systolic blood pressure [(121 +/- 29) mm Hg vs. (130 +/- 23) mm Hg, P = 0.034; 1 mm Hg = 0.133 kPa] was significantly lower while the heart rate and plasma creatinine were significantly higher in the endpoints group than in non-endpoints group. TNI and CRP levels were similar between the two groups. The BNP level at admission (median 883.5 ng/L vs. 216.5 ng/L) and GRACE score (median 164.5 vs. 142.0) were significantly higher in the endpoints group than in non-endpoints group (all P0.05). The prognostic criteria for BNP level (area under cure, 0.704) was 194.5 ng/L determined by ROC (P = 0.043). For GRACE score, the predictive value for endpoints was 0.742 (P = 0.003) and the cut-off point was 158. In the logistic regression model, BNP concentration (194.5 ng/L, OR = 3.174) and GRACE score (158, OR = 4.031) were independent predictors of endpoints in patients with ACS.Both BNP level at admission and GRACE score were independent predictors for endpoints at 30 days in patients with ACS.
