In the present work, we conducted experiments of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from urban cooking and vehicular sources to characterize the mass spectral features of primary organic aerosol (POA) and SOA using an high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS). Our results showed that the cooking styles have a greater impact on aged COA (cooking organic aerosol) mass spectra than oxidation conditions. However, the oxidation conditions affect the aged HOA (hydrocarbon-like OA) spectra more significantly than vehicle operating conditions. In our study, we use mass spectra similarity analysis and positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis to establish the POA and SOA mass spectra of these two sources. These mass spectra are used as source constraints in a multilinear engine (ME-2) model to apportion the OA (organic aerosol) sources in the atmosphere. Compared with the traditional ambient PMF results, the improved ME-2 model can better quantify the contribution of POA and SOA from cooking and vehicular sources. Our work, for the first time, establishes the vehicle and cooking SOA source profiles, and can be further used in the OA source apportionment in the ambient atmosphere.

Here, we reveal the effects of water pressure and hydrocarbon expulsion on bitumen pyrolysis, oil cracking, gaseous hydrocarbon generation, and hydrocarbon potential of organic matter. Mudstone retrieved from drilling in the Liaohe Basin was pyrolyzed at 50 to 840 bar water pressure and 1200 to 2010 bar lithostatic pressure under semi-closed conditions. Results demonstrated that increasing the water pressure strongly reduced gaseous hydrocarbons and bitumen yields, while oil yields were enhanced. The low hydrogen and high carbon dioxide yields under high water pressure suggested that high water pressure can enhance the primary pyrolysis of organic matter and retard the oil cracking. The lower values of S2, HI, and H/C under high water pressure indicate that hydrocarbon expulsion may accelerate the depletion of the hydrocarbon generation potential of organic matter. Tmax and vitrinite reflectance (VR) were also affected by water pressure. In addition, the results also indicated that water pressure and hydrocarbons expulsion strongly reduced the cracking of oil expelled at early stages. The rapid removal of oil in turn accelerates the rate of oil generation, according to Le Chatelier’s principle, thereby increasing the oil yields. High oil yields under high water pressure may primarily result from the retarding effect of water pressure on oil cracking, the promoting effect of hydrocarbon expulsion on oil generation, and the effect of water pressure and hydrocarbon expulsion on oil and bitumen. Our results will be of great benefit to the exploration of deep petroleum in China.

Semi-closed hydrous pyrolysis experiments were conducted to investigate the isotopic evolution of shale gas produced from continental organic-rich shales with increasing thermal maturity and prospecting potential. The δ13C values of methane, ethane, propane and n-butane became heavier with increasing thermal maturity and showed good relationships with vitrinite reflectance (VR). Both vehicle exhaust and cooking emission are closely related to the daily life of city dwellers, which are considered as major sources of urban secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Here, we defined the SOA derived from vehicle exhaust and cooking emission as Urban Lifestyle SOA, and simulated their formation using a Gothenburg potential aerosol mass reactor (Go: PAM). After samples had been aged under 0.3–5.5 days of equivalent photochemical age, these two urban lifestyle SOA showed markedly distinct features in SOA mass growth potentials, oxidation pathways and mass spectra. The SOA / POA mass ratios of vehicle groups (107) were 44 times larger than those of cooking groups (2.38) at about 2 days of equivalent photochemical age. It reveals that organics from vehicle may undergo the alcohol/peroxide and carboxylic acid oxidation pathway to produce abundant less/more oxidized oxygenated OA (LO-OOA and MO-OOA), and only a few primary hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (HOA) remains unaged. In contrast, organics from cooking may undergo the alcohol/peroxide oxidation pathway to produce moderate LO-OOA, and comparable primary cooking organic aerosol (COA) remains unaged. Our findings provide an insight into atmospheric contributions and chemical evolutions for urban lifestyle SOA, which would greatly influence the air quality and health risk assessments in urban areas.

Relation extraction between medical concepts from electronic medical records has pervasive applications as well as significance. However, previous researches utilizing machine learning algorithms judge the semantic types of medical concept pair mentions independently. In fact, different concept pair mentions in the same context are of dependencies which can provide beneficial evidences for identifying their relation types. To the best of our knowledge, only one study has considered such dependencies in discharge summaries. However, its hard constraints are not applied effectively to the History of Present Illness (HPI) in electronic Medical Records. According to the writing characteristics of HPI records, we generalize two regularities of dependencies among concept pairs mentioned in an HPI record to enhance the performance of relation extraction. We incorporate the two soft constraints corresponding to the regularities and the posterior probabilities returned by a local classifier into a joint inference process which applies Integer Quadratic Programming method to carry out collective classification for all concept pair mentions in an HPI record. We implement four local classification models including support vector machine, logistics regression, random forest and piecewise convolutional neural networks to examine the performance of our approach. A series of experimental results demonstrate that our collective classification method has made a principal improvement and outperforms the other state-of-the-art methods.

Abstrct In order to define the roles of water and lithostatic pressure in petroleum formation of continental type-III kerogen source rocks, semi-closed hydrous pyrolysis experiments were conducted under with 50–1200 bar water pressure and 125–2000 bar lithostatic pressure at 480 °C. Our results will be of great benefit to the exploration of shale gas and deep petroleum in China. Increasing water pressure from 50 to 325 bar did not affect the yields of gaseous hydrocarbons, oil and bitumen, but increasing water pressure leads the more oil and less gaseous hydrocarbons from continental type-III kerogen in the 325–1200 bar water pressure range under semi-closed conditions. The decreasing yields of gaseous hydrocarbons, dryness of gaseous hydrocarbons and primary hydrogen together confirm that increasing water pressure promotes the primary reaction but decreases the cracking rate of oil. The decreasing values of S2, HI and H/C in the pyrolysed samples confirm that high water pressure can increase the efficiency of hydrocarbon generation from continental type-III kerogen, while the maturation of kerogen correspondingly increases as shown by increasing values of VR and Tmax. In the 125–625 bar lithostatic pressure range, oil cracking and primary reaction of type-III kerogen may have contributed to the decreasing effect of hydrocarbon expulsion. The increasing hydrogen and gaseous hydrocarbon yields also confirm that the cracking of oil is enhanced within this pressure range. The decreasing trends of oil and gaseous hydrocarbon yields indicate that hydrocarbon generation rate was reduced by the high lithostatic pressure in the 625–2000 bar pressure range. The increasing values of S2, HI and H/C, and decreasing values of VR and Tmax of pyrolysed samples confirm the retardation effect of highlithostatic pressure on the efficiency of hydrocarbon generation and maturation. In addition, the results also indicate that expelling hydrocarbons strongly promotes further hydrocarbon generation and retards the cracking of oil from continental type-III kerogen in source rocks.

A series of methane adsorption isotherms were measured at pore pressures up to 60 MPa and at 60 °C, 100 °C and 140 °C for dried and overmature Paleozoic shales and isolated kerogen from the Sichuan Basin. At first, the measured excess adsorption increases with increasing pressure, reaches a maximum value at pressures ranging between 8 and 18 MPa and then decreases. The rate of decrease reduces with increasing pressures from 18 to 60 MPa, which is attributed to the nonlinear increase of free methane density with pressure. Additionally, an unusual increase of excess adsorption at pressures from 48 to 60 MPa was observed. Both, the supercritical Dubinin-Radushkevich (SDR)-based and Langmuir-based excess adsorption models, represent the excess adsorption isotherms equally well. The fitted maximum absolute adsorption capacities, when based on raw data from 0 to 30 MPa, are larger by an average of 11.5% when compared to the raw data from 0 to 60 MPa. This deviation indicates that experimentally derived gas adsorption characteristics can be biased with respect to the maximum pore pressure used in the respective experiments. The kerogen contribution to the total methane adsorption capacity of studied Paleozoic shale samples under in-situ hydrostatic pressure and temperature conditions of main shale formations in the Jiaoshiba shale gas play is lower than 50%. However, this contribution should be larger under realistic geological conditions, especially as existent moisture will affect clays stronger than organic matter and therefore reduce the contribution of clay towards the total sorption capacity. The estimated GIP of Paleozoic shales under geological hydrostatic pressure and temperature conditions of main shale formations in the Jiaoshiba shale gas play is 5.36–6.64 cm3/g.

Hydrous pyrolysis experiments were conducted to assess hydrocarbon generation and potential in three continental organic-rich shales at the highly-mature stage. The results of this study have important implications for deep petroleum exploration in China. The calcareous shale dominated by type-I kerogen reached its peak oil generation at a vitrinite reflectance (VR) of 1.5 %Ro, and entered the major stage of gas generation at a VR ranging from 1.50 to 2.44 %Ro. The high HI, low S2 and low atomic H/C ratio revealed that the calcareous shale has some potential for hydrocarbon generation at a VR greater than 2.44 %Ro. The mudstone with type-II kerogen reached its peak oil generation at a VR of 2.5 %Ro. The high atomic H/C ratio, but low HI and S2 indicated that mudstone may retain some hydrocarbon potential. The carbonaceous mudstone dominated by type-III kerogen had still not reached its peak of hydrocarbon generation at a VR of 3.12 %Ro. The low dryness of the gaseous hydrocarbon yields shows that the carbonaceous mudstone was still in the primary gas generation stage. The high values of S2 and atomic H/C fraction, but low HI, revealed that the carbonaceous mudstone may retain a large hydrocarbon generation potential at higher maturity stages. Our results suggested that the continental type-I and -II kerogen may have potential for shale gas and deep petroleum generation, while the continental type-III kerogen retained good potential for yielding deep natural gas.

There are vast resources of oil shale in the Chang-7 section of the Upper Triasic Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin, China. They would provide secure access to transportation fuels, if utilized in an effective, economic and environmental manner. A Chang-7 oil shale sample containing pyrite has been pyrolysed in a thermogravimetric analyzer at constant heating rates of 5, 10, 20℃/min up to 1150℃ with nitrogen as purge gas. Meanwhile, the pyrolysis-gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry experiments were performed on parallel samples of Chang-7 oil shale sample at 20℃/min in the four temperature sections, ranging from 100 to 700℃ to understand the decomposition mechanism. The initial decomposition temperature and the final decomposition temperature of hydrocarbonaceous material were about 367℃ and 521℃ (average values), respectively, which raised with the increase of heating rate. The decomposition of pyrite began to take place over 500℃, and the pyrolysates involving sulfur compounds are harmful to the environment and corrode the equipment. Thus, we recommended that the final temperature of Chang-7 oil shale pyrolysis was best not to exceed 550℃ considering the heating rate to avoid environmental pollution and damage of the instruments. Chang-7 oil shale exhibited a single stage decomposition in the range of about 367–521℃, representing the rearrangement of kerogen molecules in the temperature range of 100–350℃. The activation energies of kerogen decomposition were calculated using Coats–Redfern method at different heating rate. We found that both activation energy and pre-exponential factor increased with an increasing heating rate. Finally, the DTA curves of Chang-7 oil shale verified the reliability of the calculated activation energies.

The thermal stability of organic acids is critical in studying the formation mechanism of secondary pores in deep reservoirs (>4000 m). However, the thermal stability of organic acids in geochemical systems is strongly dependent on temperature, minerals and pressure (fluid pressure and lithostatic pressure). To investigate the activity of organic acids and the influence of these factors (temperature, pressure and K-feldspar), four series of experiments were conducted over a wide range of reaction conditions. Pure acetic acid solutions were selected for this study. The temperatures ranged from 130 °C to 380 °C, and each experiment was performed for 72 h in steps of 50 °C. The results indicate that the decomposition reaction rate was slow but accelerated with increasing temperature. At temperatures higher than 230 °C, the decomposition of acetic acid proceeded to a much more significant extent than at low temperatures. The results of experiments also show that the decomposition rates were faster at lower lithostatic pressure, and the lithostatic pressure played a larger role than water pressure in affecting the decomposition of acetic acid. Additionally, the presence of K-feldspar influenced the reaction rates of acetic acid, especially the oxidation rates. This was attributed to the increasing concentration of acetate produced by dissolution.

In order to investigate the effects of water pressure on hydrocarbon yields and potential in source rocks, carbonaceous mudstone from drilling in Liaohe Basin was pyrolyzed in simulation with constant water pressure and high-water-pressure experiments. Results demonstrate that the times of expelling hydrocarbon remarkably promote source rocks yielding liquid hydrocarbons. Increasing water pressure may increase the reaction of generating bitumen and oil, and enhance liquid hydrocarbons generation. Results of TOC, Rock-Eval, and elemental analysis in this study suggest that carbonaceous mudstone dominated by type-III kerogen remains a large number of hydrocarbon-generating potential, which may indicate that carbonaceous mudstone has a good potential to yield deep oil and natural gas. Besides, vitrinite reflectance may be the most suitable parameter to describe the maturity of source rocks.

A topochemical process was used to synthesize {010}-faceted leaflike anatase TiO2 nanocrystals from exfoliated layered titanate nanosheets. A light scattering effect of the leaflike anatase nanocrystals with a crystal size of 300 nm in length and 30 nm in width was studied as a light scattering layer on a P25 nanocrystalline-TiO2 film for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The light scattering layer fabricated using the leaflike nanocrystals exhibits a synergistic effect of light scattering and dye-loading for enhancement of light harvesting, which enhanced 28% of energy conversion efficiency of DSSCs by enhancing 33% of Jsc. The leaflike nanocrystals oriented to the direction vertical to the direction of incident light in the scattering layer improve the scattering effect of the scattering layer, and the dye molecules adsorbed on the {010}-faceted anatase exhibit high performance for photoelectron generation.

The effect of extractable organic matter and solid organic matter on the pore structure of shale from Yangchang Formation in the Ordos Basin, China is investigated in this study. The shale samples were successively crushed, extracted by dichloromethane to remove extractable organic matter, treated by hydrogen peroxide to remove solid organic matter. The porosity, organic and mineralogical characteristic of original, extracted and H2O2 treated shale samples were analyzed via low pressure gas adsorption measurement, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rock-Eval pyrolysis. Results show that pores in the studied shale were occupied and blocked by extractable organic matter with varying degrees which seriously affect porosity. Pores with small diameter will be preferential occupied and blocked. The plentiful generation of hydrocarbon in organic-rich shale will lead to high fluid pressure in pore which protect pore from compaction during evolution and lead to a higher porosity. This protection mainly act on macropores. Pores in the studied shale were dominated by quartz-related and clay-related pores, and organic matter hosted pore is rare. Solid organic matter content act as a harmful factor to total porosity of studied shale. Firstly, high content of solid organic matter reduce the relative content of quartz and clay minerals then lead to a low total porosity. Secondly, solid organic matter occupied and blocked pores related to quartz and clay minerals.

The correct understanding of shale pore characteristics is the foundation of shale gas exploration and development. Comminution is an essential sample pretreatment in many measurements of shale pore characteristics, but little is known about the influence of comminution on shale pore characteristics. This study utilizes low-pressure nitrogen adsorption and helium porosity measurements to investigate the evolution of shale pore characteristics during comminution. The results show that reducing the proportion of inaccessible pores and improving the gas diffusion efficiency are the main effects of comminution on the shale pore characteristics, resulting in an increase in measured porosity. The recommended analytical shale particle size for low-pressure nitrogen adsorption and helium porosity measurements is below 80 and 20 mesh, respectively. The proportion of inaccessible pores in shale investigated in this study ranges from 13.11 to 45.89% and shows a negative correlation with thermal maturity and a positive correlation with clay content. This suggests an improvement of organic pore accessibility during thermal evolution and a high content of inaccessible pores in clay minerals.

The characteristic of biomarker, stable carbon isotope, and rare earth elements in solid bitumen from the Puguang gas field and organic fraction in source rocks from the same area were investigated. Results show that the solid bitumen was derived from a mixed organic source with greater contributions from marine materials deposited under reducing environments. The enrichment of light rare earth elements seemed related to marine organic matter input. According to the results of principal component analysis, the main source rocks of paleo-oil reservoir in the Puguang gas field were the Upper Permian source rocks.

The organic acid is important in forming secondary pores and enhancing total porosity of the clastic rock. But there is little study to investigate the effect of organic acid on the porosity distribution of clastic rock from deep reservoirs. The changes in porosity, permeability, and porosity distribution of the dissolved medium-grained lithic arkose, from Yanchang Formation in Ordos Basin, were examined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The results show that porosity and permeability of rock increase with the time of exposure of the rock to the organic acid solution and it increases rapidly in the early period, then slightly increases to a saturation level. Besides, organic acid mainly changes the frequency and the shapes of T2 distribution in NMR analysis, and this study suggests that organic acid has more effect on rocks with larger pore throat than those with smaller pore throat.

The thermal stability of organic acids has a close relationship with the formation mechanism of secondary pores in deep reservoirs. Experiments were conducted to investigate the thermal stability of oxalic acid under high pressure and the influence of K-feldspar on oxalic acid decomposition. The experiment temperatures were set in the range of 130-330°C and each experiment was performed for 72h under 60MPa. Results show that both temperature and K-feldspar have significant influence on the decomposition of oxalic acid. The oxalic acid decomposed slowly at temperatures less than 180°C, and most of the oxalic acid decomposed at temperatures between 180°C and 230°C. Besides, the decarboxylation reaction proceeded more slowly in the presence of K-feldspar than the mineral-free experiments, which is most likely attributed to the increasing pH caused by dissolution. In addition, because the decomposition rate of oxalic acid was low, the K-feldspar dissolution was not affected at temperatures lower than 230°C.

For the last 20 years Shengli oilfield has done research into the application of microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR). The authors summarize and analyze MEOR progress in mechanism research and field application in Shengli oilfield. The results indicate MEOR could improve oil recovery after water flooding and polymer flooding with multiple mechanisms. Cumulative oil increment of MEOR application on seven blocks was 212,366 t. The research and application of MEOR should concentrate on air assisted microbial flooding and indigenous microbial flooding in the future.

Non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) play a critical role in the photochemical production of ozone (O3) and organic aerosols. Obtaining an accurate understanding on temporal trends of NMHC emissions is essential for predicting air quality changes and evaluating the effectiveness of current control measures. In this study, we evaluated temporal trends of anthropogenic NMHC emissions during August in Beijing based on ambient measurements during selected summer periods at an urban site in Beijing from 2002 to 2013. In the contrast to the results from the most recent inventory (Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China, MEIC), which reported that anthropogenic NMHC emissions during August increased by 28% from 2004 to 2012, whereas mixing ratios of NMHCs measured at this urban site decreased by 37% during the same time period. A positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was applied to these NMHC measurements for source apportionment. The results showed that the relative contributions of vehicular exhaust and gasoline evaporation to measured NMHC concentrations decreased by 66% during August from 2004 to 2012, comparable to the relative decline of 67% for transportation-related NMHC emissions reported by the MEIC inventory. This finding indicates that the implementation of stricter emissions standards for new vehicles and specific control measures for in-use vehicles has been effective for reducing transportation-related NMHC emissions. In addition, the PMF results suggested that there were no significant temporal changes in NMHC concentrations from solvent use and industry during August from 2004 to 2012, in contrast with the rapid rate of increase (8.8% yr−1) reported by the MEIC inventory. To re-evaluate the NMHC emissions trends for solvent use and industry, annual variations in NMHC / NOx ratios were compared between ambient measurements at the PKU site and the MEIC inventory. In contrast to the significant rise in NMHC / NOx ratios from the MEIC inventory, the measured NMHC / NOx ratios declined by 14% during August from 2005 to 2012. The inferred NMHC / NOx ratios based on PMF results exhibited a comparable decline of 11% to measured ratios. These results indicate that the increase rate for NMHC emissions from solvent use and industry in Beijing might be overestimated in the current inventory; therefore, additional research is necessary to verify the NMHC emission trends for this source.

We performed MAX-DOAS measurements during the PRIDE-PRD2006 campaign in the Pearl River Delta region (PRD), China, for 4 weeks in July 2006 at a site located 60 km north of Guangzhou. The vertical distributions of NO2, HCHO, and CHOCHO were independently retrieved by an automated iteration method. The NO2 mixing ratios measured by MAX-DOAS showed reasonable agreement with the simultaneous, ground based in-situ data. The tropospheric NO2 vertical column densities (VCDs) observed by OMI on board EOS-Aura satellite were higher than with those by MAX-DOAS. The 3-D chemical transport model CMAQ overestimated the NO2 VCDs as well as the surface concentrations by about 65%. From this observation, a reduction of NOx emission strength in CMAQ seems to be necessary in order to well reproduce the NO2 observations. The average mixing ratios of HCHO and CHOCHO were 7 ppb and 0.4 ppb, respectively, higher than in other rural or semirural environments. The high ratio of 0.062 between CHOCHO and HCHO corresponds to the high VOCs reactivity and high HOx turnover rate consistent with other observations during the campaign.

In order to characterize the features of particulate pollution in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in the summer, continuous measurements of particle number size distributions and chemical compositions were simultaneously performed at Guangzhou urban site (GZ) and Back-garden downwind regional site (BG) in July 2006. Particle number concentration from 20 nm to 10 μm at BG was (1.7±0.8)×104 cm−3, about 40% lower than that at GZ, (2.9±1.1)×104 cm−3. The total particle volume concentration at BG was 94±34 μm3 cm−3, similar to that at GZ, 96±43 μm3 cm−3. More 20–100 nm particles, significantly affected by the traffic emissions, were observed at GZ, while 100–660 nm particle number concentrations were similar at both sites as they are more regional. PM2.5 values were similar at GZ (69±43 μg m−3) and BG (69±58 μg m−3) with R2 of 0.71 for the daily average PM2.5 at these two sites, indicating the fine particulate pollution in the PRD region to be regional. Two kinds of pollution episodes, the accumulation pollution episode and the regional transport pollution episode, were observed. Fine particles over 100 nm dominated both number and volume concentrations of total particles during the late periods of these pollution episodes. Accumulation and secondary transformation are the main reasons for the nighttime accumulation pollution episode. SO42−, NO3− accounted for about 60% in 100–660 nm particle mass and PM2.5 increase. When south or southeast wind prevailed in the PRD region, regional transport of pollutants took place. Regional transport contributed about 30% to fine particulate pollution at BG during a regional transport case. Secondary transformation played an important role during regional transport, causing higher increase rates of secondary ions in PM1.0 than other species and shifting the peaks of sulfate and ammonium mass size distributions to larger sizes. SO42−, NO3−, and NH4+ accounted for about 70% and 40% of PM1.0 and PM2.5, respectively.

An improved analysis method for characterization of asphalt was established. The method is based on column chromatography technique. The asphalts were separated into four groups: saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes, quantitatively. About 0.1 g of sample was required in each analysis. About 20 mL of n-heptanes was used to separate out saturates first. Then about 35 mL of n-heptanes/dichloromethane (1/2.5, v/v) mixture was used to separate out aromatics. About 30 mL of dichloromethane/tetrahydrofuran (1/3, v/v) mixture was used to separate out resin. The quality of the separation was confirmed by infrared spectra (IR) and 1H NMR analysis. The model compounds, tetracosan for saturates, dibenz(ah)anthracen for aromatics, and acetanilide for resins were used for verification. The IR and 1H NMR analysis of the prepared fractions from the column liquid chromatography were in good agreement that of pure reagents.

The formation of Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) was simulated with the Secondary ORGanic Aerosol Model (SORGAM) by a classical gas-particle partitioning concept, using the two-product model approach, which is widely used in chemical transport models. In this study, we extensively updated SORGAM including three major modifications: firstly, we derived temperature dependence functions of the SOA yields for aromatics and biogenic VOCs, based on recent chamber studies within a sophisticated mathematic optimization framework; secondly, we implemented the SOA formation pathways from photo oxidation (OH initiated) of isoprene; thirdly, we implemented the SOA formation channel from NO3-initiated oxidation of reactive biogenic hydrocarbons (isoprene and monoterpenes). The temperature dependence functions of the SOA yields were validated against available chamber experiments. Moreover, the whole updated SORGAM module was validated against ambient SOA observations represented by the summed oxygenated organic aerosol (OOA) concentrations abstracted from Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) measurements at a rural site near Rotterdam, the Netherlands, performed during the IMPACT campaign in May 2008. In this case, we embedded both the original and the updated SORGAM module into the EURopean Air pollution and Dispersion-Inverse Model (EURAD-IM), which showed general good agreements with the observed meteorological parameters and several secondary products such as O3, sulfate and nitrate. With the updated SORGAM module, the EURAD-IM model also captured the observed SOA concentrations reasonably well especially those during nighttime. In contrast, the EURAD-IM model before update underestimated the observations by a factor of up to 5. The large improvements of the modeled SOA concentrations by updated SORGAM were attributed to the mentioned three modifications. Embedding the temperature dependence functions of the SOA yields, including the new pathways from isoprene photo oxidations, and switching on the SOA formation from NO3 initiated biogenic VOCs oxidations contributed to this enhancement by 10%, 22% and 47%, respectively. However, the EURAD-IM model with updated SORGAM still clearly underestimated the afternoon SOA observations up to a factor of two. More work such as to improve the simulated OH concentrations under high VOCs and low NOx concentrations, further including the SOA formation from semi-volatile organic compounds, the correct aging process of aerosols, oligomerization process and the influence on the biogenic SOA by the anthropogenic SOA, are still required to fill the gap.

With increasing temperature, tetragonal Fe0.75Mn1.35As compound exhibits a first-order phase transition at T-s=165 K from a ferrimagnetic (FI) phase with a large unit-cell volume to an antiferromagnetic (AF) phase with a small unit-cell volume. An external magnetic field induces a metamagnetic transition from the AF to the FI state above T-s, stabilizing the phase with the larger cell volume. With increasing the number of warming and cooling cycles, the resistivity curve, rho(T), shifts to higher values, and this shift is ascribed to a pronounced reduction of the mean-free path of electron scattering. After several thermocycles, a large, irreversible lattice expansion of c axis of 0.18% occurs. The positive magnetoresistance ratios as large as 12% and 6% for the first magnetic-field cycles are observed at 170 and 167 K, respectively, at 5 T. The overall magnetotransport behaviors on the subsequently second and third magnetic-field cycles at 170 K are similar to that in the first magnetic-field cycle, but with MR ratios of only 1.6% and 0.6%, respectively, at 5 T.

The magnetic and electrical transport properties of ferromagnetic semiconductor Mn1�xCrxTe x = 0.04, 0.08, and 0.14 compounds have been investigated. These compounds have ferromagnetic behavior with hysteresis loops showing a coercivity of 300– 985 Oe at 5 K. The hysteresis loop is observed even at room temperature for Mn0.86Cr0.14Te. The substitution of Cr for Mn leads to a change from an antiferromagnetic state of MnTe to a ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic state of Mn1�xCrxTe. Moreover, the incorporation of Cr into the host antiferromagnetic semiconductor MnTe lattice is confirmed by the structural characterization, which proves further that the ferromagnetic properties are not a result of the secondary phase. The typical feature of the thermally activated conduction processes for semiconductors has been verified by electrical property measurement. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.72.193308 PACS numbers: 75.50.Pp Ferromagnetic semiconductors are key materials for spin injection in electronic and optoelectronic semiconductor devices, 1 such as spin transistors, polarizing light-emitting diodes, and nonvolatile storage devices 2 that can be controlled by weak magnetic fields. Usually, ferromagnetic semiconductors are obtained by doping magnetic impurities into host non-magnetic semiconductors, such as Mn-Ge, MnSi, Cr-Ge, and Mn-CuO. 3–6 Recently, room temperature ferromagnetism was reported in Mn-GaN, Cr-GaN, Co-TiO2, and Co-ZnO. 7–10 Although the ferromagnetism in those materials was attributed to the expected ferromagnetism of the diluted magnetic semiconductors DMSs on the basis of magnetization measurements and crystallographic studies, it is still doubtful whether the ferromagnetism observed comes from the DMSs or the magnetic precipitates. 11 To obtain a real ferromagnetic semiconductor, it is important to ensure that after the doping, the same/similar crystal structure still exists with certain solid solubility between magnetic impurity and host semiconductor. On the other hand, it is interesting to detect whether any other possibilities exist for realizing a ferromagnetic semiconductor: Could the element substitution for an antiferromagnetic semiconductor induce a change from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic state while maintaining its semiconductor behavior?
