Abstract Background and purpose PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors have become a promising therapy. However, the response rate is lower than 30% in patients with cervical cancer (CC), which is related to immunosuppressive components in tumor microenvironment (TME). Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), as one of the most important immune cells, are involved in the formation of tumor suppressive microenvironment. Therefore, it will provide a theoretical basis for curative effect improvement about the regulatory mechanism of TAMs on PD-L1 expression. Methods The clinical data and pathological tissues of CC patients were collected, and the expressions of PD-L1, CD68 and CD163 were detected by immunohistochemistry. Bioinformatics was used to analyze the macrophage subtypes involved in PD-L1 regulation. A co-culture model was established to observe the effects of TAMs on the morphology, migration and invasion function of CC cells, and the regulatory mechanism of TAMs on PD-L1. Results PD-L1 expression on tumor cells could predict the poor prognosis of patients. And there was a strong correlation between PD-L1 expression with CD163+TAMs infiltration. Similarly, PD-L1 expression was associated with M1/M2-type TAMs infiltration in bioinformatics analysis. The results of cell co-culture showed that M1/M2-type TAMs could upregulate PD-L1 expression, especially M2-type TAMs may elevate the PD-L1 expression via PI3K/AKT pathway. Meanwhile, M1/M2-type TAMs can affect the morphological changes, and enhance migration and invasion abilities of CC cells. Conclusions PD-L1 expression in tumor cells can be used as a prognostic factor and is closely related to CD163+TAMs infiltration. In addition, M2-type TAMs can upregulate PD-L1 expression in CC cells through PI3K/AKT pathway, enhance the migration and invasion capabilities, and affect the tumor progression.

BackgroundChimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy, a rapidly emerging treatment for cancer that has gained momentum since its approval by the FDA in 2017, involves the genetic engineering of patients’ T cells to target tumors. Although significant therapeutic benefits have been observed, life-threatening adverse pulmonary events have been reported.MethodsUsing SAS 9.4 with MedDRA 26.1, we retrospectively analyzed data from the Food and Drug Administration’s Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database, covering the period from 2017 to 2023. The analysis included the Reporting Odds Ratio Proportional Reporting Ratio Information Component and Empirical Bayes Geometric Mean to assess the association between CAR-T cell therapy and adverse pulmonary events (PAEs).ResultsThe FAERS database recorded 9,400 adverse events (AEs) pertaining to CAR-T therapies, of which 940 (10%) were PAEs. Among these CAR-T cell-related AEs, hypoxia was the most frequently reported (344 cases), followed by respiratory failure (127 cases). Notably, different CAR-T cell treatments demonstrated varying degrees of association with PAEs. Specifically, Tisa-cel was associated with severe events including respiratory failure and hypoxia, whereas Axi-cel was strongly correlated with both hypoxia and tachypnea. Additionally, other CAR-T therapies, namely, Brexu-cel, Liso-cel, Ide-cel, and Cilta-cel, have also been linked to distinct PAEs. Notably, the majority of these PAEs occurred within the first 30 days post-treatment. The fatality rates varied among the different CAR-T therapies, with Tisa-cel exhibiting the highest fatality rate (43.6%), followed by Ide-cel (18.8%).ConclusionThis study comprehensively analyzed the PAEs reported in the FAERS database among recipients of CAR-T cell therapy, revealing conditions such as hypoxia, respiratory failure, pleural effusion, and atelectasis. These CAR-T cell therapy-associated events are clinically significant and merit the attention of clinicians and researchers.

Introduction: The simultaneous improvement of fiber quality and yield for cotton is strongly limited by the narrow genetic backgrounds of Gossypium hirsutum (Gh) and the negative genetic correlations among traits. An effective way to overcome the bottlenecks is to introgress the favorable alleles of Gossypium barbadense (Gb) for fiber quality into Gh with high yield. Objectives: This study was to identify superior loci for the improvement of fiber quality and yield. Methods: Two sets of chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSLs) were generated by crossing Hai1 (Gb, donor-parent) with cultivar CCRI36 (Gh) and CCRI45 (Gh) as genetic backgrounds, and cultivated in 6 and 8 environments, respectively. The kmer genotyping strategy was improved and applied to the population genetic analysis of 743 genomic sequencing data. A progeny segregating population was constructed to validate genetic effects of the candidate loci. Results: A total of 68,912 and 83,352 genome-wide introgressed kmers were identified in the CCRI36 and CCRI45 populations, respectively. Over 90 % introgressions were homologous exchanges and about 21 % were reverse insertions. In total, 291 major introgressed segments were identified with stable genetic effects, of which 66(22.98 %), 64(21.99 %), 35(12.03 %), 31(10.65 %) and 18(6.19 %) were beneficial for the improvement of fiber length (FL), strength (FS), micronaire, lint-percentage (LP) and boll-weight, respectively. Thirty-nine introgression segments were detected with stable favorable additive effects for simultaneous improvement of 2 or more traits in Gh genetic background, including 6 could increase FL/FS and LP. The pyramiding effects of 3 pleiotropic segments (A07:C45Clu-081, D06:C45Clu-218, D02:C45Clu-193) were further validated in the segregating population. Conclusion: The combining of genome-wide introgressions and kmer genotyping strategy showed significant advantages in exploring genetic resources. Through the genome-wide comprehensive mining, a total of 11 clusters (segments) were discovered for the stable simultaneous improvement of FL/FS and LP, which should be paid more attention in the future.

Backgroud and aim T lymphocytes are involved in the occurrence and development of essential hypertension, and potassium channels are thought to be critical for lymphocyte activation. This study is to examine the roles of the voltage-gated potassium channels (Kv1.3) and calcium-activated potassium channels (KCa3.1) in peripheral blood T lymphocytes in Kazakh hypertensive patients of Xinjiang, China, mainly focusing on the effects of these channels on nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) and inflammatory cytokines of T lymphocytes. Method Kv1.3 and KCa3.1 gene silencing were performed in cultured T lymphocytes from Kazakh patients with severe hypertension. T cell proliferation after gene silencing was measured using CCK-8. The mRNA and protein expression levels were measured using RT-qPCR and Western blot analysis, respectively. Nuclear translocation of NFAT was observed using laser confocal fluorescence microscopy. Inflammatory cytokine levels were detected with ELISA. Results Compared with control group, gene silencing of Kv1.3 and KCa3.1 respectively inhibited the proliferation of T cells. Moreover, compared with the control group, the mRNA expression levels of NFAT, IL-6 and IFN-γ were significantly decreased after gene silencing. Furthermore, the NFAT protein expression level was significantly down-regulated. In addition, the levels of IFN-γ and IL-6 in the cell culture supernatant were significantly decreased. Conclusion Both Kv1.3 and KCa3.1 potassium channels activated T lymphocytes and enhanced the cytokine secretion possibly through CaN/NFAT signaling pathway, which may in turn induce micro-inflammatory responses and trigger the occurrence and progression of hypertension.

Designing innovative anode materials that exhibit excellent ion diffusion kinetics, enhanced structural stability, and superior electrical conductivity is imperative for advancing the rapid charge–discharge performance and widespread application of sodium-ion batteries. Hollow-structured materials have received significant attention in electrode design due to their rapid ion diffusion kinetics. Building upon this, we present a high-performance, free-standing MoO2@hollow carbon nanofiber (MoO2@HCNF) electrode, fabricated through facile coaxial electrospinning and subsequent heat treatment. In comparison to MoO2@carbon nanofibers (MoO2@CNFs), the MoO2@HCNF electrode demonstrates superior rate capability, attributed to its larger specific surface area, its higher pseudocapacitance contribution, and the enhanced diffusion kinetics of sodium ions. The discharge capacities of the MoO2@HCNF (MoO2@CNF) electrode at current densities of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 5.0 A g−1 are 195.55 (155.49), 180.98 (135.20), 163.81 (109.71), 144.05 (90.46), 121.16 (71.21) and 88.90 (44.68) mAh g−1, respectively. Additionally, the diffusion coefficients of sodium ions in the MoO2@HCNFs are 8.74 × 10−12 to 1.37 × 10−12 cm2 s−1, which surpass those of the MoO2@CNFs (6.49 × 10−12 to 9.30 × 10−13 cm2 s−1) during the discharging process. In addition, these prepared electrode materials exhibit outstanding flexibility, which is crucial to the power storage industry and smart wearable devices.

Pork is one of the most widely produced and consumed meats in the world, and it is also an important source of animal protein. The continuous rise in feed prices has forced the pig industry to consider adding cost-effective alternative feed to pig diets. In this study, we aimed to explore the beneficial effects of tuna dark muscle as a nutritional supplement on the growth performance, serum lipids and antioxidant levels of Holland mini-piglets, as well as on the odor and volatile substances of pork and the gut microbiota. Two-month-old male mini-piglets (n = 24) were fed a control diet or supplemented with either 2% (LD) or 4% (HD) tuna dark muscle for 8 weeks. The use of tuna dark muscle at low and high dosages significantly increased the average daily weight gain, but it showed no significant effect on organ indices or blood lipids. In addition, dark muscle treatment significantly increased the antioxidant capacity, characterized by increased SOD and GSH-Px activities, and it decreased the content of MDA in serum. Moreover, tuna dark muscle feeding shifted the odor of rib muscle and tendon meat away from that of the control group, while similar odor patterns were observed in the longissimus dorsi muscle. Among these volatile substances, hexanal, nonanal, and heptanal increased in response to dietary tuna dark muscle and were regarded as indispensable contributors to the feeding. Furthermore, dietary tuna dark muscle modulated the gut microbiota of the piglets, increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as butyric acid-producing bacteria, and reduced the abundance of harmful bacteria. The feeding strategy reported in this study not only reduces the production costs of pork but also utilizes tuna processing by-products in an environmentally friendly way.

Although soybean and chickpea belong to the legume family, their seed starch content is very different. Currently, many studies focus on the molecular mechanisms of starch synthesis within a single species. However, the key genes and regulatory relationships responsible for the difference in seed starch content between the two species remain unknown. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms responsible for the above difference, multi-omics and bioinformatics analyses were used here to analyze gene expression patterns, protein–protein interaction networks, gene-transcription factor co-expression networks, and miRNA–gene regulatory relationships based on reported sucrose and starch metabolic genes in Arabidopsis. The results were as follows. First, seven differential expression genes of the two species in starch synthesis metabolism, including GBSS1, APL3, APS1, SS2, PTST, SBE2, and ISA, and the starch degradation gene BMY in soybean and chickpea, may contribute to their seed starch content differences. Then, the protein–protein interaction between DPEs and PHS may facilitate seed starch synthesis in chickpea. Finally, the positive regulation of two starch degradation genes (GmBMY and GmPHS) and four sucrose metabolism genes (GmHXK, GmPFK, GmTPS, and GmFRK) by transcription factors may lead to lower seed starch content in soybean. This study elucidates the possible molecular mechanisms underlying the difference in seed starch content between the two species and addresses the scientific problem of why soybean seeds have lower starch content than chickpea seeds.

More evidence from population-based cohort studies is required to confirm the application of methylation-based biomarkers in real-world settings. The cross-sectional and 24-month cumulative triage performance of a novel methylation assay targeting the host gene EPB41LE and HPV16/18 DNA L1/L2 regions among hrHPV-positive women was evaluated based on a population-based cohort study from China. Overall methylation positivity was 12.4% among hrHPV-positive women. Methylation-positive women had significantly higher risks of hrHPV persistence at 12M and 24M follow-up (RR12M = 1.9, 95%CI: 1.5–2.6 and RR24M = 1.7, 95%CI: 1.2–2.5). For CIN2+, cross-sectional triage sensitivity of methylation was similar to HPV16/18 (70.6% vs. 64.7%, pexact = 1.000), but was lower than cytology (94.1%), although not significantly (pexact = 0.213). The specificity (91.2%) of methylation was significantly higher than other triage methods (p < 0.001 for all). The longitudinal sensitivity of methylation over 24M follow-up was 56.0%, lower (but not significantly so) than HPV16/18 (64.0%, pexact = 0.688) and cytology (76.0%, pexact = 0.125). Methylation testing showed high positive predictive values for CIN2+ (41.4% at baseline, 50.0% at 24-month), while the CIN2+ risk of methylation negative women (cNPV) remained considerable (2.5% at baseline, 6.9% at 24-month). Study findings indicate that methylation has better specificity and predictive values for the presence or development of cervical precancer and might therefore be considered for the strategy of HPV screening and methylation triage followed by immediate treatment of triage-positive women and delayed follow-up of hrHPV-positive/methylation-negative women.

Rabbit hair is an excellent textile fiber owing to its softness and luster. However, the poor spinnability of rabbit hair restricts its application on textiles. In this article, ionic liquid (IL) solutions were used to treat rabbit hair at five different temperatures. The raw and treated rabbit hair was then characterized by microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), mechanical property, XRD, and properties related to spininability (crimp and friction property, moisture regain, and electrical performance). The results showed that the rabbit hair fiber’s morphology was obviously curled, and mechanical properties and crystallinity were reduced after ILs treatment. Moreover, the friction performance was increased by 15% and the crimp rate was increased by 7.2 times. These results suggest that with proper temperatures of ILs treatment, the rabbit hair could show better potential for spinning.

Ramie fiber as the longest natural cellulose fiber in the world has been widely used in textile production. However, the rigidity of ramie fiber greatly restricts its application in high value-added garments. The softening treatment of ramie fibers is therefore essential. In this study, four different concentrations of ionic liquid (IL) solutions, [Emim]OAc(1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate), were used to treat degummed ramie fibers. The fiber fineness, mechanical properties, moisture absorption, and liberation ability were tested, and the fibers were also examined with Scanning Electron Micorscope (SEM), Gel Permeation (GPC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the fiber modulus after 90% IL treatment was decreased to 31% of its original value while the breaking tenacity was decreased to 50% of its original value, these mechanical properties of treated ramie fiber were similar to cotton fiber and much softer than regular ramie fibers. Moreover, with the IL treatment, the ramie fiber presented higher water absorption and breaking elongation. It is believed that with the proper IL treatment, the ramie fiber will show better potential for textile production.

Drylands are highly vulnerable to climate change and human activities. The drylands of China account for approximately 10.8% of global drylands, and China is the country most severely affected by aridity in Asia. Therefore, studying the spatial variation characteristics in soil multifunctionality (SMF) and investigating the driving factors are critical for elucidating and managing the functions of dryland ecosystems in China. Based on the environmental factors (mean annual precipitation (MAP), mean annual temperature (MAT), solar radiation (Srad), soil acidity (pH), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and cation exchange capacity (CEC)) and aridity from the Dataset of soil properties for land surface modeling over China, we used non-linear regression, ordinary least square (OLS) regression, structural equation model (SEM), and other analytical methods to investigate the relationships of SMF with environmental factors across different aridity levels in China. SMF in different dryland regions varied significantly and showed a patchy distribution, with SMF index values ranging from −1.21 to 2.42. Regions with SMF index values from −0.20 to 0.51 accounting for 63.0% of dryland area in China. IntroductionThe biological soil crust, a widespread phenomenon in arid and semi-arid regions, influences many ecological functions, such as soil stability, surface hydrology, and biogeochemical cycling. Global climate change has significantly altered winter and spring freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) in mid and high-latitude deserts. However, it is unclear how these changes will affect the biological soil crust and its influence on nutrient cycling and soil enzyme activity.MethodsWe conducted this study in the Gurbantunggut Desert, a typical temperate desert, using the moss crust as an example of an evolved biological soil crust. Simulating the effects of different FTC frequencies (0, 5, and 15 times) on soil carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus-related nutrients, and extracellular enzyme activities allowed us to understand the relationship between soil environmental factors and nutrient multifunctionality during FTC changes.ResultsThe results showed that recurrent FTCs significantly increased the accumulation of carbon and phosphorus nutrients in the soil and decreased the effectiveness of nitrogen nutrients. These changes gradually stabilized after 15 FTCs, with available nutrients showing greater sensitivity than the previous full nutrient level. FTCs inhibited carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycle-related hydrolase activities and promoted carbon cycle-related oxidase activities in the crust layer. However, in the 0–3 cm layer, the carbon and phosphorus cycle-related hydrolase activities increased, while peroxidase and urease activities decreased. Overall, the nutrient contents and enzyme activities associated with the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles were lower in the 0–3 cm layer than in the crust layer. In addition, the multifunctionality of nutrients in the soil decreased after 15 FTCs in the crust layer and increased after 5 FTCs in the 0–3 cm layer. Structural equation modeling showed that FTC, soil water content, pH, available nutrients, and extracellular enzyme activity had opposite effects on nutrient multifunctionality in different soil layers. The change in nutrient multifunctionality in the crust layer was primarily caused by changes in total nutrients, while soil water content played a greater role in the 0–3 cm layer. Regardless of the soil layer, the contribution of total nutrients was much higher than the contribution of available nutrients and extracellular enzyme activity. In conclusion, it is essential to consider different soil layers when studying the effects of global climate change on the nutrient cycling of the biological soil crust.

In this study, the optimal forming parameters for printing flexible circuits using aerosol jet printing technology are explored through numerical simulation and experiments. The printhead during the deposition process is numerically simulated. By employing the controlled variable method, the process parameters such as gas flow rate, working distance, nozzle diameter, and printing speed are selected to investigate their effects on the morphology of the printed lines. Accordingly, single-factor experiments are designed to validate the printing of flexible circuits on both planar and curved substrates. Laser micro-sintering is utilized to improve the conductivity of the printed lines and ultimately fabricate flexible strain sensors. Under the sheath gas flow rate of 400 sccm, carrier gas flow rate of 100 sccm, working distance of 3 mm, nozzle diameter of 500 μm, and printing speed of 10 mm/s, the optimal morphology of the printed lines is achieved with low linewidth characteristics. The variations in the focal ratio, working distance, nozzle diameter, and printing speed significantly affect the minimum feature line width and morphology of the printed lines.

Turing structures emerge in reaction-diffusion processes far from thermodynamic equilibrium involving chemicals with different diffusion coefficients in classic Turing systems. Here, authors show that a Turing structure with near zero strain semi-coherence interfaces can be constructed in homogeneous solutions.

Purpose – Data service (DS) is a special software service that enables data access in cloud environment and provides a unified data model for cross-origination data integration and data sharing. The purpose of the work is to automatically compose DSs and quickly generate data view to satisfy users' various data requirements (DRs). Design/methodology/approach – The paper proposes an automatic DS composition and view generation approach. DSs are organized into DS dependence graph (DSDG) based on their inherent dependences, and DSs can be automatically composed using the DSDG according to user's DRs. Then, data view will be generated by interpreting the composed DS. Findings – Experimental results with real cross-origination data sets show the proposed approaches have high efficiency and good quality for DS composition and view generation. Originality/value – The authors propose a DS composition algorithm and a data view generation algorithm according to users' DRs.

BackgroundMultiple components of biodiversity are excellent predictors of precipitation-induced changes in ecosystem function. However, the importance of differing scales (alpha versus beta) is usually overlooked in biodiversity–ecosystem multifunctionality studies. Consequently, little is known about how precipitation regulates the relationship between multifunctionality and multiple components of alpha and beta diversity.AimsWe investigated geographic patterns of herbaceous plant diversity and ecosystem multifunctionality along a precipitation gradient spanning more than 2010 km in Northwest China.MethodsWe assessed the effects of herbaceous species, phylogenetic, and functional components at different scales on multifunctionality in drylands.ResultsThe alpha diversity of species and functional beta diversity were key components explaining the variation in multifunctionality. As the main environmental factor, MAP (mean annual precipitation) affected multifunctionality by changing the mediating variables (i.e., species alpha and functional beta diversity). More importantly, a certain precipitation threshold was detected for the relationship of multifunctionality to species alpha and functional beta diversity. MAPs of approximately 158 mm and 140 mm modulated this relationship (shifting it from uncorrelated to significantly correlated).ConclusionsOur findings provide insights into previously neglected mechanisms by which diversity in herbaceous layers at different scales affects ecosystem multifunctionality. It is highlighted that MAP regulates the relationship between diversity and multifunctionality in dryland ecosystems at different scales. Further, diversity may have substantial consequences for multifunctionality where MAP is higher. These empirical results provide a comprehensive understanding of the biodiversity–multifunctionality relationship in the context of precipitation, ultimately contributing to conservation and restoration programs for multifunctionality in drylands.

Global biodiversity is in crisis as a result of human activity. This biodiversity crisis has been well documented by scientists, recognized by world leaders, politicians, businesses, and citizens. Both the biodiversity and climate crises need to be addressed now. 2020 was when this change was supposed to start, with the 15th Conference of Parties (COP15) of the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) meeting in Kunming, and the 26th Conference of Parties (COP26) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change meeting in Glasgow, but both meetings were postponed. COP26 was held a year late (November 2021), while COP15 was split into two, with the first part held in Kunming in October 2021, and the second part scheduled for Montreal in December 2022. This meeting in Montreal – arguably the most important in the CBDs history – must agree on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), to reverse biodiversity loss. Failure to reach agreement in Montreal would ultimately be a failure of us all, with irreversible consequences for life on earth. Yet, with three months before the final deadline only 20% of text and two targets are agreed. This paper reviews the factors hindering progress on the agreement and suggests possible solutions.

The dynamics of nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) profoundly affect productivity and ecological adaptability to adversity in plants. Global warming induced the frequent occurrence of extreme precipitation events that altered the winter snow pattern in deserts. However, there is a lack of understanding of how desert mosses respond to long-term snow cover change at the NSC level. Therefore, in this study, long-term (7-years) winter snow removal (-S), ambient snow (CK), and double snow (+S) experiments were set in the field to investigate the content of NSC and its component in Syntrichia Caninervis. Our results showed that changes in snow depth, snow years, and their interaction significantly affected NSC and its component of Syntrichia caninervis. Compared to snow removal, NSC, soluble sugar, and starch significantly decreased with the increasing snow depth. The ratio of soluble sugar to starch significantly increased, while NSC and soluble sugar gradually returned to the normal level with an increase in snow years. It is worth mentioning that snow removal significantly reduced the soluble sugar to starch ratio compared to ambient snow depth, whereas the double snow experiment significantly increased the ratio of soluble sugar to starch during winter. This indicated an obvious trade-off between carbon utilization and carbon storage in Syntrichia caninervis. Snow removal stimulated Syntrichia caninervis to store sufficient carbon sources by starch accumulation for its future growth, while double snow promoted its current growth by soluble sugar accumulation. The variance in decomposition showed that soil physical and chemical properties, snow cover, and their interaction explained 83% of the variation in NSC and its components, with soil and plant water content, pH, and electrical conductivity (P-WC, S-WC, S-pH, and S-EC) as significant predictors. This highlights that snow indirectly affected NSC and its component contents by changing soil physical and chemical properties; however, long-term changes in snow cover could slow down its sensitivity to snow.

Cotton (Gossypium spp.) is the fifth largest oil crop in the world, and cottonseed provides abundant vegetable oil resources and industrial bioenergy fuels for people; therefore, it is of practical significance to increase the oil content of cotton seeds for improving the oil yield and economic benefits of planting cotton. Long-chain acyl-coenzyme A (CoA) synthetase (LACS) capable of catalyzing the formation of acyl-CoAs from free fatty acids has been proven to significantly participate in lipid metabolism, of which whole-genome identification and functional characterization of the gene family have not yet been comprehensively analyzed in cotton. In this study, a total of sixty-five LACS genes were confirmed in two diploid and two tetraploid Gossypium species, which were divided into six subgroups based on phylogenetic relationships with twenty-one other plants. An analysis of protein motif and genomic organizations displayed structural and functional conservation within the same group but diverged among the different group. Gene duplication relationship analysis illustrates the LACS gene family in large scale expansion through WGDs/segmental duplications. The overall Ka/Ks ratio indicated the intense purifying selection of LACS genes in four cotton species during evolution. The LACS genes promoter elements contain numerous light response cis-elements associated with fatty acids synthesis and catabolism. In addition, the expression of almost all GhLACS genes in high seed oil were higher compared to those in low seed oil. We proposed LACS gene models and shed light on their functional roles in lipid metabolism, demonstrating their engineering potential for modulating TAG synthesis in cotton, and the genetic engineering of cottonseed oil provides a theoretical basis.

Pineapple leaf fibers are abundant but not completely utilized because of the production methods. In this research, the steam explosion process combined with traditional methods including steam explosion after retting, retting after steam explosion, steam explosion after scraping, and hand-scraping only were employed. And they were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, gel permeation chromatography, Fourier-transform infrared, chemical composition, and mechanical test. Results showed that the fibers obtained by steam explosion after scraping method contain the highest percentage of cellulose, the lowest percentage of hemicellulose and lignin, and also the best crystallinity and breaking tenacity with a reasonable degree of polymerization.

The difficulty of effectively monitoring and managing the environment to conserve biodiversity is as yet an unsolved conundrum. A project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has concluded that progress can be made through the use of flagship species selected using criteria drawn from conservation biology, ecosystem function, socio-economics, and cultural importance. Inclusion of the latter three criteria will help attract and maintain the commitment of the public to play full parts in carrying out any conservation measures needed. A system is proposed for scoring species to select those that are most suitable as flagships. This method can be used regardless of the size of the area chosen for attention, whether it is a region, a country, or a particular protected area.

Carbon fiber-reinforced composites are widely used in automobile, aerospace and military lightweight manufacturing due to their excellent mechanical properties such as light weight, excellent fracture resistance, corrosion resistance and wear resistance, etc. However, because of their high hardness, anisotropy and low interlayer strength characteristics, there are many problems with machine carbon fiber-reinforced composites with traditional methods. As a non-contact processing technology, laser machining technology has lots of advantages in carbon fiber-reinforced composites processing. However, there are also some defects produced in laser machining process such the heat affected zone, delamination and fiber extraction due to the great difference of physical properties between the carbon fibers and the resin matrix. To improve the quality of carbon fiber-reinforced composites laser machining, lots of works have been carried out. In this paper, the research progress of carbon fiber-reinforced composites laser machining parameters optimization and numerical simulation was summarized, the characteristics of laser cutting carbon fiber-reinforced composites and cutting quality influence factors were discussed, and the developing trend of the carbon fiber-reinforced composites laser cutting was prospected.

Owing to high power and accuracy and low false positive rate in our multi-locus approaches for genome-wide association studies and linkage analyses, these approaches have attracted considerable attention in plant and animal genetics. In large mapping population, however, fast multi-locus random-SNP-effect efficient mixed model association (FASTmrEMMA) and genome-wide composite interval mapping (GCIM) run a relatively long time. To address this issue, we proposed the improved FASTmrEMMA and GCIM algorithms in this study. In the new algorithms, some matrix identities, such as the Woodbury matrix identity, were used. In scanning each marker on the entire genome, in other words, the improved algorithms effectively replace the expensive eigenvector solutions in (restricted) maximum likelihood estimations in original algorithms with two (one) updated inner products and one updated vector-matrix-vector multiplication. Simulated and real data analyses showed that their computational efficiencies are increased sharply in large mapping population, although there are no mapping result differences between original and improved algorithms. In addition, the related software packages (mrMLM.GUI and QTL.gCIMapping.GUI) can be downloaded from the R and BioCode websites.

The geographical region of Central Asia comprises Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. Central Asia’s temperate forests, steppes, and sandy deserts, including riparian tugai forests, have been identified by the World Wide Fund for Nature as Global 200 ecoregions, and the Mountains of Central Asia are considered biodiversity hotspots. Here, we describe and analyze the diverse characteristics and utilization of plant diversity and resources of the region. We confirm that there are 9520 species of higher plants, 20% of which are endemic species, belonging to 138 families and 1176 genera. The vegetation geography of Central Asia can be divided into 5 provinces and 33 districts, and more than 65% species have a Central Asian geographical distribution pattern. Plant resource utilization can be grouped into 5 categories and 31 subcategories, including food, medicine, industry, environmental protection, construction, and plant germplasm. In this review, we also discuss the principal threats to plant biodiversity in Central Asia posed by global climate change and offer recommendations for conservation strategies.

Abstract Background Root systems are critical for plant growth and development. The Casparian strip in root systems is involved in stress resistance and maintaining homeostasis. Casparian strip membrane domain proteins (CASPs) are responsible for the formation of Casparian strips. Results To investigate the function of CASPs in cotton, we identified and characterized 48, 54, 91 and 94 CASPs from Gossypium arboreum, Gossypium raimondii, Gossypium barbadense and Gossypium hirsutum, respectively, at the genome-wide level. However, only 29 common homologous CASP genes were detected in the four Gossypium species. A collinearity analysis revealed that whole genome duplication (WGD) was the primary reason for the expansion of the genes of the CASP family in the four cotton species. However, dispersed duplication could also contribute to the expansion of the GaCASPs gene family in the ancestors of G. arboreum. Phylogenetic analysis was used to cluster a total of 85 CASP genes from G. arboreum and Arabidopsis into six distinct groups, while the genetic structure and motifs of CASPs were conserved in the same group. Most GaCASPs were expressed in diverse tissues, with the exception of that five GaCASPs (Ga08G0113, Ga08G0114, Ga08G0116, Ga08G0117 and Ga08G0118) that were highly expressed in root tissues. Analyses of the tissue and subcellular localization suggested that GaCASP27 genes (Ga08G0117) are membrane protein genes located in the root. In the GaCASP27 silenced plants and the Arabidopsis mutants, the lateral root number significantly increased. Furthermore, GaMYB36, which is related to root development was found to regulate lateral root growth by targeting GaCASP27. Conclusions This study provides a fundamental understanding of the CASP gene family in cotton and demonstrates the regulatory role of GaCASP27 on lateral root growth and development.

Chemically deuterated cellulose fiber was expected to provide novel applications due to its spectral, biological, and kinetic isotope effect. In this research, the performance of the chemically deuterated cotton fibers, including their mechanical property, enzymatic degradation performance, effect on bacterial treatment, and fast identification (near-infrared modeling) was investigated. The breaking tenacity of the deuterated cotton fibers was slightly lower, which might be attributed to the structural damage during the chemical deuteration. The glucose yield by enzymatic hydrolysis was less than that of the protonic cotton fibers, implying the deuterated fibers are less sensitive to enzymatic degradation. Furthermore, the deuterated fibers could promote the growth of bacteria such as Escherichia. coli, which was associated with the released low-level deuterium content. At last, the near-infrared technique combined with partial least squares regression successfully achieved a fast identification of the protiated and deuterated cotton fibers, which significantly promoted the potential application of deuterated cellulose as anticounterfeiting materials (e.g., special paper).

Welds made with 304 austenitic stainless steel play an important role in high-pressure hydrogen storage systems. However, there are few investigations of the effect of heat input on the hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of tungsten inert gas (TIG) welded 304 austenitic stainless steel. In this study, the effect of heat input on the HE of TIG welded 304 austenitic stainless steel is investigated. It was found that with the increase in TIG welding heat input, the ferrite content in the weld shows a tendency to first increase and then decrease. From the perspective of morphology, it first changes from lathy ferrite and strip ferrite to dendritic ferrite, and then becomes reticular ferrite and lathy ferrite. Slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) testing shows that with the increase in heat input from TIG welding, the susceptibility of the weld to HE first increases and then decreases. Our study shows that TIG welds of 304 austenitic stainless steel exhibit the best HE resistance when the welding heat input is 0.778 kJ/mm, the relative elongation (RE) is 0.884, and the relative reduction of area (RRA) is 0.721. This work can provide a reference for the optimization of the 304 stainless steel TIG welding process.

Viral diseases of cultivated crops are often caused by virus spillover from wild plants. Tobacco (N. tabacum) is an important economic crop grown globally. The viral pathogens of tobacco are traditional major subjects in virology studies and key considerations in tobacco breeding practices. A positive-strand RNA virus, wild tomato mosaic virus (WTMV), belonging to the genus potyvirus in the family potyviridae was recently found to infect tobacco in China. In this study, diseased tobacco leaf samples were collected in the Henan Province of China during 2020–2021. Several samples from different locations were identified as WTMV positive. An infectious DNA clone was constructed based on one of the WTMV isolates. By using this clone, we found that WTMV from tobacco could establish infections on natural reservoir hosts, demonstrating a possible route of WTMV spillover and overwintering in the tobacco field. Furthermore, the WTMV infection was found to be accompanied by other tobacco viruses in the field. The co-inoculation experiments indicate the superinfection exclusion (SIE) between WTMV and other potyvirus species that infect tobacco. Overall, our work reveals novel aspects of WTMV evolution and infection in tobacco and provides an important tool for further studies of WTMV.

The carbon fiber-reinforced composite (CFRP) has the properties of a high specific strength, low density and excellent corrosion resistance; it has been widely used in aerospace and automobile lightweight manufacturing as an important material. To improve the CFRP cutting quality in the manufacturing process, a nanosecond laser with a wavelength of 532 nm was applied to cut holes with a 2-mm-thick CFRP plate by using laser rotational cutting technology. The influence of different parameters on the heat-affected zone, the cutting surface roughness and the hole taper was explored, and the cutting process parameters were optimized. With the optimized cutting parameters, the minimum value of the heat-affected zone, the cutting surface roughness and the hole taper can be obtained, which are 71.7 μm, 2.68 μm and 0.64°, respectively.

Recently, significant progress has been made in colloidal quantum dot (QD) based optoelectronic devices for solar energy conversion, such as solar cells, luminescent solar concentrators, and solar-driven photoelectrochemical devices. In this Research Update, we summarized the most recent works on the QD based optoelectronic devices. Particularly, we focused on the effect of the QD structure on the functional properties of QD based devices. The major factors that determine the efficiency of the optoelectronic devices were discussed. In the end, we proposed potential ways to address the future challenges and opportunities of this field.

Kudzu is cosmopolitan and low-cost as a source of fiber, food, medicine, and fuel. However, it is not well utilized as a kind of fiber due to the degumming problem. In order to take full advantage of the kudzu resource in the world and expand the application field of kudzu fiber, this study deals with preparation of kudzu fiber by combined steam explosion and chemical degumming. Kudzu fibers are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. It is found that kudzu fiber after combined degumming has a clean surface with most nonfibrous composition removed and fibers dispersed; the cellulose I structure of kudzu cellulose did not change after treatment but its crystallinity increased. These results suggest this combined degumming is feasible for preparing kudzu fiber. It will probably provide theoretical basis for subsequent utilization of kudzu fibers.

Interannual seasonal variability in precipitation may strongly affect the life history and growth of desert annual plants. We compared the effects of dry and wet springs and dry and wet autumns on growth and F2 seed dormancy of plants from spring (SG)- and autumn (AG)-germinated seeds of the cold desert annual Erodium oxyrhinchum. Vegetative and reproductive growth and F2 seed dormancy and germination were monitored from September 2016 to November 2020 in the sandy Gurbantunggut Desert in NW China in Central Asia. Dry autumns decreased the density of AG plants, and dry springs decreased the density of SG plants and growth of SG and AG plants. In dry springs, SG plants were more sensitive to precipitation than AG plants, while in wet springs SG and AG plants had similar responses to precipitation. During growth in both dry and wet springs, most morphological characters of SG and AG plants initially increased rapidly in size/number and then plateaued or decreased, except for SG plants in dry springs. In dry springs, most morphological characters of AG plants were larger or more numerous than those of SG plants, and they were larger/more numerous for SG plants in wet than in dry springs. The percentage biomass allocated to reproduction in SG plants was slightly higher in a wet than in a dry spring. A much higher proportion of dormant seeds was produced by AG plants in a wet spring than in a dry spring. Projected changes in precipitation due to climate change in NW China are not likely to have much of an effect on the biology of this common desert annual plant.

Abstract The desiccation tolerant bryophyte Bryum argenteum is an important component of desert biological soil crusts (BSCs) and is emerging as a model system for studying vegetative desiccation tolerance. Here we present and analyze the hydration-dehydration-rehydration transcriptomes in B. argenteum to establish a desiccation-tolerance transcriptomic atlas. B. argenteum gametophores representing five different hydration stages (hydrated (H0), dehydrated for 2 h (D2), 24 h (D24), then rehydrated for 2 h (R2) and 48 h (R48)), were sampled for transcriptome analyses. Illumina high throughput RNA-Seq technology was employed and generated more than 488.46 million reads. An in-house de novo transcriptome assembly optimization pipeline based on Trinity assembler was developed to obtain a reference Hydration-Dehydration-Rehydration (H-D-R) transcriptome comprising of 76,206 transcripts, with an N50 of 2,016 bp and average length of 1,222 bp. Comprehensive transcription factor (TF) annotation discovered 978 TFs in 62 families, among which 404 TFs within 40 families were differentially expressed upon dehydration-rehydration. Pfam term enrichment analysis revealed 172 protein families/domains were significantly associated with the H-D-R cycle and confirmed early rehydration (i.e. the R2 stage) as exhibiting the maximum stress-induced changes in gene expression.

Abstract Degumming is the dominant method to obtain lignocellulosic fibers in the textile industry. Traditionally, wet chemistry methods are used to monitor the evolution of major chemical components during the degumming process. However, these methods lack the ability to provide spatial information for these heterogeneous materials. In this study, besides wet chemistry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, a Fourier-transform infrared microspectroscopy (FTIRM) method was employed to monitor the changes in spatial distribution of the main chemical components on the kenaf surface during a steam explosion followed by chemical degum process. The results showed that hemicellulose and lignin were degummed at different rates, and the mechanisms of their degumming are different. The infrared microspectral images revealed the distribution changes of chemical components on the fiber bundle surface during the process, indicating that FTIRM is an effective tool to analyze the degumming process and improve degumming methods.

Heat transfer during cooling process influences the formation of crystal modification of polypropylene (PP) with nucleating agent (β-nucleated polypropylene). In this study, finite element method (FEM) was applied to simulate the cooling process in PP. Additionally, the skin-core crystalline structure of β-nucleated polypropylene cooled at different temperatures was studied by a wide angle of X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The non-thermal crystallization behaviour of β-nucleated polypropylene was further studied based on the results of FEM. The results indicated that, based on temperature field, FEM was capable of calculating the cooling rate in the skin and core layers of samples. When the cooling temperature increased from 20 °C to 100 °C, the cooling rate decreased from 702.64 °C/min to 79.04 °C/min, and from 119.49 °C/min to 40.00 °C/min in the skin layer and core layer, respectively. The difference of cooling rates from the skin layer to the core layer decreases with the increasing of cooling temperature. Correspondingly, the skin-core crystalline structure is proved to react to the gradient of cooling rate. The non-thermal crystallization also implies that the relative content of β-phase increases with the increasing of temperature, which may attribute to the longer residence time in the temperature range from 105 °C to 140 °C. Background: Evidence of increased type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk associated with potatoes consumption is equivocal. We aimed to perform a meta-analyses on the association between potatoes consumption and T2D risk in prospective cohort studies. Methods: Studies published prior to 31 Aug 2016 were identified in PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science. Pooled relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) based upon the highest vs. lowest category of potatoes consumption in each study were calculated in meta-analysis using random-effects models. Dose-response meta-analysis was fitted using generalized least squares regression in order to quantify the association between potatoes consumption and T2D risk. Results: The pooled RR comparing the highest vs. lowest category of potato consumption was 1.077 (95%CI: 1.005, 1.155). Dose-response meta-analysis revealed T2D risk increased 3.5% (RR=1.035, 95% CI: 1.004-1.067) for additional three serving per week serving of potato. The pooled RR comparing the highest vs. lowest category of French fries consumption was 1.362 (95%CI: 1.004, 1.850). Dose-response meta-analysis indicated T2D risk increased 18.7% (RR = 1.187, 95% CI: 1.067-1.321) for additional three serving per week of French fries. Conclusion: This meta-analysis support a significant positive association between high potatoes consumption and risk of T2D, especially the consumption of French fries.

Cellulosic fibers from the bast of Pueraria lobata (P. lobata) vine were separated using a “green” and efficient method that combined steam explosion (SE) and a laccase mediator system (LMS). The chemical components, structure, and thermal alterations in the fibers were evaluated. The SE performed at 180 °C for 10 min did not change the chemical composition of P. lobata; however, SE did alter the fiber structure and rendered its surface more accessible to the laccase enzyme. Treated and untreated samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and chemical methods. The cellulose content of the processed fibers was approximately 68.2%, and the lignin content was 11.8%, which was much lower than the 22.98% lignin content of the raw material. The cellulose fibers exhibited higher cellulose crystallinity and thermal stability compared with the untreated samples. This combined treatment approach may be useful for the isolation of cellulose fibers for composites, textiles, and other industrial applications.

The chemical and structural properties of kenaf fibers that were treated at different steam pressures during the steam explosion process were investigated. With increased steam pressure, a higher percentage of cellulose and acid-insoluble lignin and a lower content of hemicellulose and pectin were obtained. This result was further confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies revealed that the steam-exploded kenaf fibers were more crystalline than the raw kenaf fibers, and that excessive steam pressure above 3 MPa damaged the cellulose crystalline structure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed a change in the surface morphology of the treated kenaf fibers. The lower content of gums and the effective defibrillation of steam-exploded kenaf fibers demonstrated the potential of steam explosion treatment in applications of kenaf fibers.

Malus sieversii (Ledeb.) M. Roem is a tertiary relict tree species and a rare and valuable resource for germplasm conservation. Since 1995, its wild forest has been severely destroyed by a devastating wood-boring beetle Agrilus mali Matsumura (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. Where it invaded, this beetle infested more than 95% of the forests, and 80% of wild apple trees were reported dead in the hotspots. The physiological damage by A. mali infestation and their causality to tree death remain unclear. In this study, we attempted to explain the wild apple dieback from plant physiological perspectives, based on the hypothesis that the more damage M. sieversii suffered from the infestation of A. mali, the less water and fewer nutrients it could utilize. The study was conducted on trees with different extents of damage in wild apple forests over a large scale during 2016 and 2017. The stable carbon isotope ratio in leaves was analyzed to indicate tree water stress status. Total N, total P, total K, Ca2+ and Mg2+ were analyzed to reflect plant mineral nutrient status. The extent of damage was significantly associated with the leaf stable carbon isotope ratio in the drier year of 2016, but not significantly in 2017 with heavy rainfall in spring. The mineral nutrient contents of leaves were not significantly different among the four damage rankings in either year. The water stress experienced by M. sieversii was aggravated by the damage caused by A. mali, especially in a drought year, and indicates that the long-term water deficit caused by A. mali infestation may be the key factor leading to the decline of wild apple forests. The finding suggests the necessity of aerial irrigation for sustainable integrated pest management in wild apple trees.

In this study, Cu/Ag/polydopamine (PDA)/polyester (PET) fabrics were fabricated for multi-functional textiles. The PET fabrics were firstly modified by dopamine to form a polydopamine (PDA) layer on the fiber surface, then Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were anchored on fiber surface through chelation between PDA and Ag+ ions, and the Ag NPs were further used as catalytic seeds for in situ reduction of Cu nanoparticles (Cu NPs). The surface morphology, chemistry, and crystalline structure of the prepared PET fabrics were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). As expected, Cu NPs were evenly dispersed on the surface of fibers. The Cu/Ag/PDA/PET fabrics showed good antibacterial property against Escherichia coli and exhibited excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding ability. The Cu/Ag/PDA/PET fabrics with high performance antibacterial and EMI shielding properties can be applied as functional protective textiles.

A novel graphene oxide/BiOCl (GO/BiOCl) nanocomposite film was prepared via a spread coating method. In visible-light photocatalytically degrading Rhodamine B (RhB) experiments, 2 wt% GO/BiOCl could degrade 99% of RhB within 1.5 h and the rate constant was 12.2 times higher than that of pure BiOCl. The degradation efficiency still kept at 80% even after 4 recycles, evidencing the relatively good recyclability. The enhancement was attributed to the improvement of visible light adsorption and charge separation. Holes and superoxide radicals·O2- played a major role as reactive species. The values of conduction band and valence band for GO and BiOCl were calculated and a new photocatalytic mechanism of GO/BiOCl nanocomposite was proposed.

In this paper, the crystalline modification of isotactic polypropylene (PP) with a rare earth β nucleating agent (WBG) with different ultrasound conditions was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The relationship between the ultrasound conditions and the crystalline structure, as well as the mechanism for the behavior, were revealed. SEM showed that the dispersion of the nucleating agent in the PP matrix was better at shorter ultrasound distances. In addition, the higher the water cooling temperature, the better the nucleating agent was dispersed in the PP matrix. The results of XRD and DSC showed that the crystallinity and the relative content of the β-crystal were increased with nearer ultrasound distance, as well as increased in higher water cooling temperatures. In particular, under the same conditions, the crystallinity and the relative content of the β-crystal after ultrasonic treatment were much higher than those without ultrasound.

HIGHLIGHTSA facial method was used to fabricate BiOI/BiOCl film at room temperature.30% BiOI/BiOCl showed an excellent photocatalytic activity and stability.Improvement of photocatalytic activity was owed to expanded visible light absorption and high separation efficiency of charge.Photocatalysis has been considered to be one of the most promising ways to photodegrade organic pollutants. Herein, a series of BiOI/BiOCl films coating on FTO were fabricated through a simple method at room temperature. The photocatalytic efficiency of 30%BiOI/BiOCl could reach more than 99% aiming to degrading RhB and MB after 90 and 120 min, respectively. Compared with BiOCl, 30%BiOI/BiOCl showed 12 times higher efficiency when degrading RhB. In comparison with BiOI, 30%BiOI/BiOCl showed 5 and 6 times higher efficiency when degrading RhB and MB, respectively. These obvious enhancements were attributed to expanded visible light absorption and high separation performance of photoinduced charge. Moreover, the photocatalytic activity of 30%BiOI/BiOCl had no obvious decrease after five recycles, suggesting that it was a promising photocatalyst for the removal of MB and RhB pollutants. Finally, the possible growth process for the BiOI/BiOCl thin films and photocatalysis mechanism were investigated in details. This work would provide insight to the reasonable construction of BiOX heterojunction and the photocatalytic mechanism in degrading organic pollutants.

In this paper, the crystalline modification of a rare earth nucleating agent (WBG) for isotactic polypropylene (PP) based on its supramolecular self-assembly was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction and polarized optical microscopy. In addition, the relationship between the self-assembly structure of the nucleating agent and the crystalline structure, as well as the possible reason for the self-assembly behaviour, was further studied. The structure evolution of WBG showed that the self-assembly structure changed from a needle-like structure to a dendritic structure with increase in the content of WBG. When the content of WBG exceeded a critical value (0.4 wt%), it self-assembled into a strip structure. This revealed that the structure evolution of WBG contributed to the Kβ and the crystallization morphology of PP with different content of WBG. In addition, further studies implied that the behaviour of self-assembly was a liquid–solid transformation of WBG, followed by a liquid–liquid phase separation of molten isotactic PP and WBG. The formation of the self-assembly structure was based on the free molecules by hydrogen bond dissociation while being heated, followed by aggregation into another structure by hydrogen bond association while being cooled. Furthermore, self-assembly behaviour depends largely on the interaction between WBG themselves.

Kenaf is an economically viable and ecologically friendly cellulose source. It can be used in the textile, paper, and bio-energy industries, but it has not been effectively developed and utilized because of degumming problems. To effectively take advantage of kenaf resources, to satisfy the growing demand for natural fiber, and to provide support for other fiber material degumming, steam explosion (STEX) pretreatment followed by alkali-oxygen treatment was studied. The effect of pressure on the properties of kenaf during the STEX treatment was studied, and the optimal degumming process for kenaf was selected. Results showed that STEX pretreatment removed pectin and part of the hemicellulose. Carbohydrates (cellulose and hemicellulose) could be degraded via high pressure treatment. The residual gum content and the fineness of the kenaf fiber after the alkali-oxygen treatment were good enough for textile production. High pressure was found not to be a key factor influencing the degumming process. Low pressure STEX (0.5 MPa) and alkali-oxygen treatment was judged to be an efficient method for degumming kenaf fibers.

The current Chinese Standard (GB5889-86 1986) for wet chemistry determination assumes that there is no temperature degradation of sugars during hot water extraction. There is therefore a need to quantify this level of error and propose possible solutions for future revisions. This research was performed to investigate the thermal resistance of polysaccharides in common fibrous materials. A two-factor, two-level experimental design was employed, in which pre-oven drying and water bath temperature were controlled and changes in extractive content were measured. The thermodynamic equations for polysaccharide thermal degradation in ramie and wood were calculated. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was employed to identify monosaccharide changes during the process. This study found that polysaccharides in fibrous materials have considerable thermal degradation during oven drying at 100 °C and hot water treatment. Lower temperature combinations are recommended during hot water extractive testing when sugar analysis is to be subsequently performed.

Alkaloids with allelopathic activity are not as well-known as other allelochemicals. Our study revealed that total alkaloids from seeds of the medicinal plant Peganum harmala L. possessed significant growth inhibitory effect on four treated plants, with dicot plants (lettuce and amaranth) being more sensitive than the tested monocot plants (wheat and ryegrass). Further investigation led to the isolation of harmaline and harmine as the main active ingredients in the total alkaloids of P. harmala seeds. Harmaline exerted potent inhibitory effects on seedling growth of treated plants, especially dicots, inhibiting root elongation of lettuce and amaranth by 31% and 47% at a very low concentration (5 µg/mL), whereas harmine exhibited much weaker non-selective inhibitory effect on the plants. Considering the high yield and poor utilization of P. harmala in China, we anticipate that this plant could be exploited as an alternative weed management tool in the future.
