Many economically important crops and vegetables belonging to the cruciferous family are heavily endangered by clubroot disease caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae infection. Breeding of clubroot resistant cultivars based on mapping and cloning of resistant genes is commonly regarded as the most cost-effective and efficient way to fight against this disease. The traditional way of R gene functional validation requires stable transformation that is both time- and labor-consuming. In this study, a rapid and efficient hairy-root transgenic protocol mediated by Agrobacterium rhizogenes was developed. The transformation positive rate was over 80% in Brassica napus showed by GUS reporter gene and this transformation only took 1/6 of the time compared with stable transformation. The system was applicable to different B. napus varieties and other cruciferous crops including Brassica rapa and Brassica oleracea. In particular, two known CR genes, CRA3.7.1 and CRA8.2.4 were used respectively, as example to show that the system works well for CR gene study combined with subsequent P. brassicae infection in B. napus. Most importantly, it works both in over-expression that led to disease resistance, as well as in RNAi which led to disease susceptible phenotype. Therefore, this system can be used in batch-wise identification of CR genes, and also offered the possibility of manipulating key genes within the P. brassicae genome that could improve our knowledge on host–pathogen interaction.

Abstract Background The advent of immunotherapy targeting immune checkpoints has conferred significant clinical advantages to patients with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD); However, only a limited subset of patients exhibit responsiveness to this treatment. Consequently, there is an imperative need to stratify LUAD patients based on their response to immunotherapy and enhance the therapeutic efficacy of these treatments. Methods The differentially co-expressed genes associated with CD8 + T cells were identified through weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) and the Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes (STRING) database. These gene signatures facilitated consensus clustering for TCGA-LUAD and GEO cohorts, categorizing them into distinct immune subtypes (C1, C2, C3, and C4). The Tumor Immune Dysfunction and Exclusion (TIDE) model and Immunophenoscore (IPS) analysis were employed to assess the immunotherapy response of these subtypes. Additionally, the impact of inhibitors targeting five hub genes on the interaction between CD8 + T cells and LUAD cells was evaluated using CCK8 and EDU assays. To ascertain the effects of these inhibitors on immune checkpoint genes and the cytotoxicity mediated by CD8 + T cells, flow cytometry, qPCR, and ELISA methods were utilized. Results Among the identified immune subtypes, subtypes C1 and C3 were characterized by an abundance of immune components and enhanced immunogenicity. Notably, both C1 and C3 exhibited higher T cell dysfunction scores and elevated expression of immune checkpoint genes. Multi-cohort analysis of Lung Adenocarcinoma (LUAD) suggested that these subtypes might elicit superior responses to immunotherapy and chemotherapy. In vitro experiments involved co-culturing LUAD cells with CD8 + T cells and implementing the inhibition of five pivotal genes to assess their function. The inhibition of these genes mitigated the immunosuppression on CD8 + T cells, reduced the levels of PD1 and PD-L1, and promoted the secretion of IFN-γ and IL-2. Conclusions Collectively, this study delineated LUAD into four distinct subtypes and identified five hub genes correlated with CD8 + T cell activity. It lays the groundwork for refining personalized therapy and immunotherapy strategies for patients with LUAD.

Abstract Background Aberrant activation of macrophages is associated with pathogenesis of acute lung injury (ALI). However, the potential pathogenesis has not been explored. Objectives We aimed to identify whether histone deacetylase (HDAC) 10 is involved in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-exposed ALI and reveal the underlying pathogenesis by which it promotes lung inflammation in LPS-exposed ALI via modifying P62 with deacetylation. Methods We constructed an ALI mice model stimulated with LPS to determine the positive effect of Hdac10 deficiency. Moreover, we cultured murine alveolar macrophage cell line (MH-S cells) and primary bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) to explore the pro-inflammatory activity and mechanism of HDAC10 after LPS challenge. Results HDAC10 expression was increased both in mice lung tissues and macrophage cell lines and promoted inflammatory cytokines production exposed to LPS. Hdac10 deficiency inhibited autophagy and inflammatory response after LPS stimulation. In vivo, Hdac10 fl/fl -LysMCre mice considerably attenuated lung inflammation and inflammatory cytokines release exposed to LPS. Mechanistically, HDAC10 interacts with P62 and mediates P62 deacetylation at lysine 165 (K165), by which it promotes P62 expression and increases inflammatory cytokines production. Importantly, we identified that Salvianolic acid B (SAB), an HDAC10 inhibitor, reduces lung inflammatory response in LPS-stimulated ALI. Conclusion These results uncover a previously unknown role for HDAC10 in regulating P62 deacetylation and aggravating lung inflammation in LPS-induced ALI, implicating that targeting HDAC10 is an effective therapy for LPS-exposed ALI.

Abstract Dysregulation of IL-17A is closely associated with airway inflammation and remodeling in severe asthma. However, the molecular mechanisms by which IL-17A is regulated remain unclear. Here we identify epithelial sirtuin 6 (SIRT6) as an epigenetic regulator that governs IL-17A pathogenicity in severe asthma. Mice with airway epithelial cell-specific deletion of Sirt6 are protected against allergen-induced airway inflammation and remodeling via inhibiting IL-17A-mediated inflammatory chemokines and mesenchymal reprogramming. Mechanistically, SIRT6 directly interacts with RORγt and mediates RORγt deacetylation at lysine 192 via its PPXY motifs. SIRT6 promotes RORγt recruitment to the IL-17A gene promoter and enhances its transcription. In severe asthma patients, high expression of SIRT6 positively correlates with airway remodeling and disease severity. SIRT6 inhibitor (OSS_128167) treatment significantly attenuates airway inflammation and remodeling in mice. Collectively, these results uncover a function for SIRT6 in regulating IL-17A pathogenicity in severe asthma, implicating SIRT6 as a potential therapeutic target for severe asthma.

Abstract Background Depression is increasingly recognized as a worldwide serious, public health concern. A better understanding of depression is important for advancing its management and learning the difference between major depressive disorder (MDD) and dysthymia. Our aim is to conduct a concurrent analysis of the trends of both MDD and dysthymia in China. Methods The data on depression from 1990 to 2019 were collected from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019). To determine the average annual percent changes (AAPC) and relative risks (RRs), joinpoint regression and the age-period-cohort models were employed, respectively. Results The incidence number of MDD and dysthymia continuously increased in China from 1990 to 2019, however, the age-standardized rates (ASR) had a decreasing trend in both men and women. Abstract In resource constrained edge environment, multiple service providers can compete to rent the limited resources to cache their service instances on edge servers close to end users, thereby significantly reducing the service delay and improving quality of service (QoS). However, service providers renting the resources of different edge servers to deploy their service instances can incur different resource usage costs and service delay. To make full use of the limited resources of the edge servers to further reduce resource usage costs, multiple service providers on an edge server can form a coalition and share the limited resource of an edge server. In this paper, we investigate the service caching problem of multiple service providers in resource constrained edge environment, and propose an independent learners-based services caching scheme (ILSCS) which adopts a stateless Q-learning to learn an optimal service caching scheme. To verify the effectiveness of ILSCS scheme, we implement COALITION, RANDOM, MDU, and MCS four baseline algorithms, and compare the total collaboration cost and service latency of ILSCS scheme with these of these four baseline algorithms under different experimental parameter settings. The extensive experimental results show that the ILSCS scheme can achieve lower total collaboration cost and service latency.

Abstract Background The impact of depressive status (DS) on hypertension incidence is still controversial and has not been studied in Chinese middle-aged and elderly population. This study aimed to explore the relationship between DS and incident hypertension and analyze the joint effects of DS and body mass index (BMI) on hypertension incidence. Methods We conducted a prospective cohort study using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), a nationwide population-based study. In 2013, DS was identified using scores from the 10-item Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10) among eligible respondents from CHARLS, and hypertension occurrence was observed until 2018. The multiple Cox models were employed to calculate the associations between DS and hypertension incidence. In addition, we also computed the multiplicative interaction (MI) between DS and BMI of incident hypertension and assessed their additive interaction (AI) through relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion (AP) or synthetic index (S). Positive AI was indicated by RERI > 0, AP > 0 or S > 1. Results Over the 5-year follow-up, depressive symptoms increased the risk of hypertension incidence by 19% (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.19, 95% confidence interval (CI): (1.01, 1.41)), while depression was associated with a 24% increased risk (HR = 1.24; 95% CI: (1.03, 1.50)). Significant MIs between DS and overweight or obesity were observed and almost all of AI indexes showed positive joint effects on incident hypertension, of which the depression-obesity combination had the largest joint effect (RERI = 4.47, 95%CI: (0.28, 8.66); AP = 0.67, 95%CI: (0.50, 0.85); S = 4.86,95%CI: (2.66, 8.86)). Conclusion DS could lead to hypertension and this impact was amplified when coexisting with higher BMI. It highlighted a need for precise interventions targeting weight management and depression treatment in the aging population to prevent hypertension.

The synchronicity of rain and heat in the summer of China’s monsoon region provides sufficient water and heat resources for maize growth. However, the intra-annual distribution of precipitation and the probability of extreme precipitation have been inevitably altered by the ongoing climate change, thus affecting the matching degree between precipitation and crop water requirements (MDPCWR). Evaluating the extent to which the MDPCWR will change in the future is of great importance for food security and the sustainable management of water resources. In this study, considering that different growth stages of crops have different sensitivities to water stress, the AquaCrop model was used to calculate the MDPCWR more accurately. In addition, a cumulative distribution function-transform (CDF-t) method was used to remove the bias of 11 global climate models (GCMs) under two typical emission scenarios (SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5) from phase six of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). A comprehensive investigation was conducted on how maize growth, water consumption, and the MDPCWR will respond to future climate change with CO2 concentration enrichment in the Huang–Huai–Hai (3H) region in China by driving a well-tested AquaCrop model with the bias-corrected GCMs outputs. The results indicate the following: (1) The CDF-t method can effectively remove seasonal bias, and it also performs well in eliminating the bias of extreme climate events. (2) Under the SSP2-4.5 scenario, the average maximum temperature will increase by 1.31 °C and 2.44 °C in 2021–2050 and 2051–2080, respectively. The average annual precipitation will increase up to 96.8 mm/year, but it will mainly occur in the form of heavy rain. (3) The increased maize evapotranspiration rate does not compensate for the decreased crop water requirement (up to −32 mm/year), due to a shorter growth cycle. (4) The farmland cultivation layer is not able to hold a significant amount of precipitation, due to the increased frequency of heavy rains, resulting in increased irrigation water requirements for maize over the next two periods, with the maximum value of 12 mm/year. (5) Under different scenarios, the projected future MDPCWR will decrease by 9.3–11.6% due to changes in precipitation patterns and crop water requirements, indicating that it will be more difficult for precipitation to meet the water demand of maize growing in the 3H region. The results can provide comprehensive information to understand the impact of climate change on the agricultural water balance and improve the regional strategy for water resource utilization in the 3H region.

Shiga toxin type 2 (Stx2) is the primary virulence factor produced by Shiga toxin-producing enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (STEC), which causes epidemic outbreaks of gastrointestinal sickness and potentially fatal sequela hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Most studies on Stx2-induced apoptosis have been performed with holotoxins, but the mechanism of how the A and B subunits of Stx2 cause apoptosis in cells is not clear. Here, we found that Stx2 A-subunit (Stx2A) induced mitochondrial damage, PINK1/Parkin-dependent mitophagy and apoptosis in Caco-2 cells. PINK1/Parkin-dependent mitophagy caused by Stx2A reduced apoptosis by decreasing the accumulation of reactive oxidative species (ROS). Mechanistically, Stx2A interacts with Tom20 on mitochondria to initiate the translocation of Bax to mitochondria, leading to mitochondrial damage and apoptosis. Overall, these data suggested that Stx2A induces mitochondrial damage, mitophagy and apoptosis via the interaction of Tom20 in Caco-2 cells and that mitophagy caused by Stx2A ameliorates apoptosis by eliminating damaged mitochondria. These findings provide evidence for the potential use of Tom20 inhibition as an anti-Shiga toxin therapy.

Summary: Persistent Fusobacterium nucleatum infection is associated with the development of human colorectal cancer (CRC) and promotes tumorigenicity, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we reported that F. nucleatum promoted the tumorigenicity of CRC, which was associated with F. nucleatum-induced microRNA-31 (miR-31) expression in CRC tissues and cells. F. nucleatum infection inhibited autophagic flux by miR-31 through inhibiting syntaxin-12 (STX12) and was associated with the increased intracellular survival of F. nucleatum. Overexpression of miR-31 in CRC cells promoted their tumorigenicity by targeting eukaryotic initiation factor 4F-binding protein 1/2 (eIF4EBP1/2), whereas miR-31 knockout mice were resistant to the formation of colorectal tumors. In conclusion, F. nucleatum, miR-31, and STX12 form a closed loop in the autophagy pathway, and continuous F. nucleatum-induced miR-31 expression promotes the tumorigenicity of CRC cells by targeting eIF4EBP1/2. These findings reveal miR-31 as a potential diagnostic biomarker and therapeutic target in CRC patients with F. nucleatum infection.

Abstract Background and purpose This study assessed the predictive factors for symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) after receiving intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) within 6 h in northern China. Methods We retrospectively analyzed ischemic stroke patients who were treated with IVT between November 2016 and December 2018 in 19 hospitals in Shandong Province, China. Potential predictors of sICH were investigated using univariate and multivariate analyses. Results Of the 1293 enrolled patients (845 men, aged 62 ± 11 years), 33 (2.6%) developed sICH. The patients with sICH had increased coronary heart disease (36.4% vs. 13.7%, P = 0.001), more severe stroke (mean National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale [NIHSS] score on admission of 14 vs.7, P 50 min, and a white blood cell count ≥9000/mm3 were independent risk factors for sICH in Chinese patients within 6 h after IVT for AIS.

The morphology, microstructure as well as the orientation of cathodic materials are the key issues when preparing high-performance aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). In this paper, binder-free electrode Mn(OH)2 nanowire arrays were facilely synthesized via electrodeposition. The nanowires were aligned vertically on a carbon cloth. The as-prepared Mn(OH)2 nanowire arrays were used as cathode to fabricate rechargeable ZIBs. The vertically aligned configuration is beneficial to electron transport and the free space between the nanowires can provide more ion-diffusion pathways. As a result, Mn(OH)2 nanowire arrays yield a high specific capacitance of 146.3 Ma h g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1. They also demonstrates ultra-high diffusion coefficients of 4.5 × 10−8~1.0 × 10−9 cm2 s−1 during charging and 1.0 × 10−9~2.7 × 10−11 cm−2 s−1 during discharging processes, which are one or two orders of magnitude higher than what is reported in the studies. Furthermore, the rechargeable Zn//Mn(OH)2 battery presents a good capacity retention of 61.1% of the initial value after 400 cycles. This study opens a new avenue to boost the electrochemical kinetics for high-performance aqueous ZIBs.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) can worsen cerebral arterial atherosclerosis stenosis in patients with stroke; however, its effect on patients without stroke remains ambiguous. This study explored the association of MetS and its individual components with asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis (aICAS) and asymptomatic extracranial arterial stenosis (aECAS) among older Chinese adults. A total of 1988 participants from the Kongcun Town study aged ≥40 years and without a history of stroke were enrolled. The baseline data were obtained via face-to-face interviews. MetS was defined according to International Diabetes Federation criteria. Detection of aICAS was conducted using transcranial Doppler ultrasound, followed by diagnosis via magnetic resonance angiography. The evaluation of aECAS was performed using bilateral carotid ultrasonography. The aICAS and aECAS groups were 1:1 matched separately to the non-stenosis group by age and sex. The association between MetS and aICAS or aECAS was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. Among the 1988 participants, 909 were diagnosed with MetS. Background: To date, there has been no consensus regarding the benefits of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stenting (PTAS) vs. those of standardized medical treatment (SMT) for patients with symptomatic intracranial vertebrobasilar stenosis (IVBS). The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the effects of PTAS or SMT on symptomatic IVBS in a real-world Chinese population.Methods: We included 238 patients with ischemic stroke caused by IVBS stenosis who were admitted to Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University between September 2012 and May 2018; 62 of these patients were treated with SMT and 176 underwent PTAS. Ischemic stroke in the territory of the responsible artery, hemorrhage, and death within 1 year were recorded as primary endpoints. Secondary endpoints included assessment of stroke severity and the incidence of re-stenosis. The primary endpoint rates were compared between the PTAS and SMT groups at 7 days, 1, 6 months, and 1 year.Results: In the PTAS group, the success rate of stent placement was 98.9%. During the entire trial, except for 7 days, the SMT group had a higher frequency of primary endpoint events than did the PTAS group. The primary endpoint was 17.7% (11/62) vs. 8.6% (15/174) at 1 month (p = 0.049), 29% (18/62) vs. 14.4% (25/174) at 6 months (p = 0.01), and 32.2% (20/62) vs. 17.2% (30/174) at 1 year (p = 0.013). The restenosis rate of the target lesion was 13.8%; 60% were symptomatic restenosis and 40% were asymptomatic restenosis. The rate of severe stroke at 1 year after PTAS was 0%, while that in the SMT group was 9.7%.Conclusions: In a real-world Chinese cohort, PTAS for patients might be superior to SMT, and provide better long-term neurological function recovery and lower disability rate.

Neuroacanthocytosis is a rare progressive neurodegenerative disease, including chorea-acanthocytosis, McLeod syndrome, Huntington’s disease-like 2, and pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration, where chorea-acanthocytosis occupies the main entity of this disease group. Here, a classic case of chorea-acanthocytosis is reported that exhibited gradually deteriorating abnormal movements of limbs and face, swallowing difficulty, and lip and cheek biting for the past two years. Peripheral blood smears revealed that 35% of the red blood cells were acanthocytes and electron microcopy scans clearly showed the morphology of acanthocytes. VPS13A gene sequencing found a heterozygous novel VPS13A gene mutation (c.80dupT). Brain magnetic resonance imaging scans showed moderate anterior horn dilation of lateral ventricles and bilateral atrophy of the head of caudate nucleus. Several suggestive features are summarized to provide diagnostic clues for chorea-acanthocytosis and facilitate future diagnosis and treatment.

Lymphomatoid granulomatosis (LYG) is an infrequent lymphoproliferative disease that typically involves the lungs, but may also affect the central nervous system (CNS). Isolated CNS involvement is very rare, and its clinicopathological features have not been fully elucidated. Here, we systematically reviewed the English literature through PubMed to collect all relevant case reports and small case series with pathologically confirmed primary CNS-LYG. A total of 29 relevant articles with 40 cases were included in this systemic review. In cases where T cells and B cells were compared, T cells were predominant in 19 (79.2%), and B cells were predominant in 5 (20.8%). The overall infection rate of EBV was 48.1% (13/27), among which the infection rate was 40.9% (9/22) in immunocompetent patients and 80% (4/5) in immunodeficient (HIV-infected) patients. Among the patients who underwent pathological grading, 35.7% (5/14) were at grade I, 42.9% (6/14) were at grade II, and 21.4% were at grade III. In conclusion, primary CNS-LYG is closely related to EBV infection and some cases may be predominantly T-cell phenotype. Surgical resection may be effective for mass-like lesions, although there is still a lack of standard therapeutic regimen. Accurate grading of lesions is essential for treatment selection and prognosis evaluation.

As the challenge of mental health problems such as anxiety and depression increasing today, more convenient, objective, real-time assessing techniques of mental state are in need. The Microsoft Kinect camera is a possible option for contactlessly capturing human gait, which could reflect the walkers' mental state. So we tried to propose a novel method for monitoring individual's anxiety and depression based on the Kinect-recorded gait pattern. In this study, after finishing the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), 179 participants were required to walked on the footpath naturally while shot by the Kinect cameras. Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT) were conducted to extract features from the Kinect-captured gait data after preprocessing, and different machine learning algorithms were used to train the regression models recognizing anxiety and depression levels, and the classification models detecting the cases with specific depressive symptoms. The predictive accuracies of the regression models achieved medium to large level: The correlation coefficient between predicted and questionnaire scores reached 0.51 on anxiety (by epsilon-Support Vector Regression, e-SVR) and 0.51 on depression (by Gaussian Processes, GP). The predictive accuracies could be even higher, 0.74 on anxiety (by GP) and 0.64 on depression (by GP), while training and testing the models on the female sample. The classification models also showed effectiveness on detecting the cases with some symptoms. These results demonstrate the possibility to recognize individual's questionnaire measured anxiety/depression levels and some depressive symptoms based on Kinect-recorded gait data through machine learning method. This approach shows the potential to develop non-intrusive, low-cost methods for monitoring individuals' mental health in real time.

Purpose: To investigate the relationships among the degree of intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS), plaque enhancement (PE), and ischemic stroke events (ISEs) using 3. 0 T high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI).Materials and Methods: Fifty-two ICAS patients who underwent HR-MRI were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups according to the results of whole-brain digital subtraction angiography (DSA): the mild-moderate stenosis group (group MID) and the severe stenosis group (group SEV). According to the onset time of the ISEs, the plaques were divided into the acute/sub-acute phase culprit plaque group (group ACU, within 1 month), the chronic-phase culprit plaque group (group CHR, more than 1 month), and the non-culprit plaque group (group NON). Two neuroradiologists independently measured the signal intensity of PE and pituitary enhancement in the HR-MRI and calculated the ratio of the two indices. According to the ratio, the patients were divided into three groups: the marked enhancement group (group MA), the mild enhancement group (group ME), and the no enhancement plaque group (group NO). The relationships among the degree of ICAS, the degree of PE and ISEs were analyzed.Results: Seventy-two ICAS plaques were identified in 52 patients. The multiple independent samples Kruskal-Wallis H test showed that the differences among group ACU, CHR, and NON were significant in the degree of PE (P = 0.002). Group CHR and group NON were combined as the non-acute phase group (group non-ACU). Group NO and group ME were combined as the non-marked enhancement group (group non-MA). The comparison between group ACU and group non-ACU showed significant differences in the degree of both ICAS (P = 0.014) and PE (P = 0.006) according to the univariate logistic regression. The multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the impact of the degree of ICAS and PE on ISEs, and the results showed that severe stenosis (P = 0.036) and marked PE (P = 0.013) were independent risk factors for acute ISEs, respectively.Conclusion: Severe intracranial arterial stenosis and marked plaque enhancement are independent risk factors for acute ischemic stroke events, respectively. The study provides new ideas for further exploring the pathogenesis of stroke caused by intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis.

Facing the challenging employment situation and the changing labor market, developing student entrepreneurial intention has attracted significant policy consideration in China. This study describes the background of entrepreneurship education in China’s higher education institutes and explores the influences of entrepreneurship education on student entrepreneurial intention. Using data from a survey on students in China, this study finds that students in different types of institutions and different major fields had a different level of engagement in entrepreneurship education. Further, the higher the level of entrepreneurship education the students received, the stronger their self-efficacy of entrepreneurial decision-making was, and the stronger their entrepreneurial intention was. Student entrepreneurial decision-making self-efficacy played a mediating role between entrepreneurship education and student entrepreneurial intention. We found that entrepreneurship education has a positive effect on entrepreneurial intention. Entrepreneurship education course-taking has a positive effect on entrepreneurial decision-making. Furthermore, the positive effect of self-efficacy of entrepreneurial decision-making on entrepreneurial intention was also confirmed. We also found that self-efficacy of entrepreneurial decision-making played the significant role of mediator between entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial intention. The findings also showed a difference between the current China context and the western context that taking entrepreneurship-related classes had more considerable influences on student entrepreneurial intention than entrepreneurship-related practicum. We discuss the implications of the improvement of higher education in China and relevance to other contexts.

Background The reported number of cases and deaths from common infectious diseases can change during major public health crises. We explored whether the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) had an impact on tuberculosis (TB) incidence and mortality in China based on routinely reported TB data. Methods We used TB data used from the monthly national notifiable infectious disease reports in China from January 2015 to January 2023. Based on an interrupted time series (ITS) design, we applied Poisson and negative binomial regression models to assess the changes of reported TB incidence and mortality before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results We found a significant and immediate decrease in the levels of both reported TB incidence (relative risk (RR) = 0.887; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.810-0.973) and mortality (RR=0.448; 95% CI=0.351-0.572) at the start of COVID-19 outbreak. During the pandemic, the slope of reported incidence decreased significantly (RR=0.994; 95% CI=0.989-0.999), while the slope of reported mortality increased sharply (RR=1.032; 95% CI=1.022-1.041) owing to an abrupt rise in reported mortality after January 2022. Conclusions Both TB incidence and mortality decreased immediately at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over a longer period, the COVID-19 pandemic had contributed to a sustained and more significant decrease in reported incidence, and a delayed but sharp increase in reported mortality.
