In 2015 the Gamma-Ray Observation of Winter Thunderstorms (GROWTH) collaboration launched a mapping observation campaign for high-energy atmospheric phenomena related to thunderstorms and lightning discharges. This campaign has developed a detection network of gamma rays with up to 10 radiation monitors installed in Kanazawa and Komatsu cities, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, where low-charge-center winter thunderstorms frequently occur. During four winter seasons from October 2016 to April 2020, in total 70 gamma-ray glows, minute-lasting bursts of gamma rays originating from thunderclouds, were detected. Their average duration is 58.9 sec. Among the detected events, 77% were observed in nighttime. The gamma-ray glows can be classified into temporally-symmetric, temporally-asymmetric, and lightning-terminated types based on their count-rate histories. An averaged energy spectrum of the gamma-ray glows is well fitted with a power-law function with an exponential cutoff, whose photon index, cutoff energy, and flux are $0.613\pm0.009$, $4.68\pm0.04$ MeV, and $(1.013\pm0.003)\times10^{-5}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (0.2-20.0MeV), respectively. Understanding and reducing the in-orbit instrumental backgrounds are essential to achieving high sensitivity in hard X-ray astronomical observations. The observational data of the Hard X-ray Imager (HXI) on board the Hitomi satellite provides useful information on the background components, owing to its multi-layer configuration with different atomic numbers: the HXI consists of a stack of four layers of Si (Z = 14) detectors and one layer of CdTe (Z = 48, 52) detector surrounded by well-type BGO (Bi4Ge3O12) active shields. Based on the observational data, the backgrounds of top Si layer, the three underlying Si layers, and the CdTe layer are inferred to be dominated by different components, namely, low-energy electrons, albedo neutrons, and proton-induced radioactivation, respectively. Monte Carlo simulations of the in-orbit background of the HXI reproduce the observed background spectrum of each layer well, thereby verifying the above hypothesis quantitatively. We designed, developed, and deployed a distributed sensor network aiming at observing high-energy ionizing radiation, primarily gamma rays, from winter thunderclouds and lightning in coastal areas of Japan. Starting in 2015, we have installed, in total, more than 15 units of ground-based detector system in Ishikawa Prefecture and Niigata Prefecture, and accumulated 551 days of observation time in four winter seasons from late 2015 to early 2019. In this period, our system recorded 51 gamma-ray radiation events from thundercloud and lightning. Highlights of science results obtained from this unprecedented amount of data include the discovery of photonuclear reaction in lightning which produces neutrons and positrons along with gamma rays, and deeper insights into the life cycle of a particle-acceleration and gamma-ray-emitting region in a thundercloud. During a winter thunderstorm on November 24, 2017, a downward terrestrial gamma-ray flash took place and triggered photonuclear reactions with atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen nuclei, coincident with a lightning discharge at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station in Japan. We directly detected neutrons produced by the photonuclear reactions with gadolinium orthosilicate scintillation crystals installed at sea level. Two gadolinium isotopes included in the scintillation crystals, $^{155}$Gd and $^{157}$Gd, have large cross-sections of neutron captures to thermal neutrons such as $^{155}$Gd(n,$\gamma$)$^{156}$Gd and $^{157}$Gd(n,$\gamma$)$^{158}$Gd. De-excitation gamma rays from $^{156}$Gd and $^{158}$Gd are self-absorbed in the scintillation crystals, and make spectral-line features which can be distinguished from other non-neutron signals. The neutron burst lasted for $\sim$100~ms, and neutron fluences are estimated to be $>$52 and $>$31~neutrons~cm$^{-2}$ at two observation points inside the power plant. Shocks, turbulence and winds all influence the electron velocity distribution in hot plasmas, exciting lower-energy electrons and generating a high-energy (typically power-law) tail. This effect, typically described as a kappa distribution can affect both the line and continuum X-ray spectrum emitted by the plasma. Hahn & Savin (2015) proposed a "Maxwellian decomposition" to generate the rate coefficients of kappa distributions. Using their method and the AtomDB atomic database, we have developed a general model to calculate the emission from a plasma with a kappa distribution. We compare our kappa results for the charge state distribution and spectra of oxygen to those from KAPPA package with the ion data available within the CHIANTI atomic database. Sufficiently energetic electrons, created either in a kappa distribution or merely a very hot Maxwellian plasma, can also emit via electron-electron (e-e) bremsstrahlung, a process not previously included in AtomDB. We have added this process to AtomDB and apply it to calculate the temperature gradients, as well as the total spectra from the post-shock regions of an accreting magnetic cataclysmic variable (CV). We find the contribution of e-e bremsstrahlung to the total spectra exceeds 10% at KT\sim 100 keV, with the total emissivity in the post-shock accretion stream differing by more than 10% at energies above 60 keV., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, ApJS in press

During a winter thunderstorm on 2017 November 24, a strong burst of gamma rays with energies up to $\sim$10~MeV was detected coincident with a lightning discharge, by scintillation detectors installed at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station at sea level in Japan. The burst had a sub-second duration, which is suggestive of photoneutron productions. The leading part of the burst was resolved into four intense gamma-ray bunches, each coincident with a low-frequency radio pulse. These bunches were separated by 0.7--1.5~ms, with a duration of $\ll$1~ms each. Thus, the present burst may be considered as a ``downward" terrestrial gamma-ray flash (TGF), which is analogous to up-going TGFs observed from space. Although the scintillation detectors were heavily saturated by these bunches, the total dose associated with them was successfully measured by ionization chambers, employed by nine monitoring posts surrounding the power plant. From this information and Monte Carlo simulations, the present downward TGF is suggested to have taken place at an altitude of 2500 $\pm$ 500~m, involving $8^{+8}_{-4} \times 10^{18}$ avalanche electrons with energies above 1~MeV. The Gamma-Ray Observation of Winter Thunderclouds (GROWTH) collaboration has been performing observation campaigns of high-energy radiation in coastal areas of Japan Sea. Winter thunderstorms in Japan have unique characteristics such as frequent positive-polarity discharges, large discharge current, and low cloud bases. These features allow us to observe both long-duration gamma-ray bursts and lightning-triggered short-duration bursts at sea level. In 2015, we started a mapping observation project using multiple detectors at several new observation sites. We have developed brand-new portable gamma-ray detectors and deployed in the Kanazawa and Komatsu areas as well as the existing site at Kashiwazaki. During three winter seasons from 2015, we have detected 27 long-duration bursts and 8 short-duration bursts. The improved observation network in Kashiwazaki enables us to discover that the short-duration bursts are attributed to atmospheric photonuclear reactions triggered by a downward terrestrial gamma-ray flash. Collaborating with electric-field and radio-band measurements, we have also revealed a relation between abrupt termination of a long-duration burst and a lightning discharge. The Hard X-ray Imager (HXI) onboard Hitomi (ASTRO-H) is an imaging spectrometer covering hard X-ray energies of 5-80 keV. Combined with the hard X-ray telescope, it enables imaging spectroscopy with an angular resolution of $1^\prime.7$ half-power diameter, in a field of view of $9^\prime\times9^\prime$. The main imager is composed of 4 layers of Si detectors and 1 layer of CdTe detector, stacked to cover wide energy band up to 80 keV, surrounded by an active shield made of BGO scintillator to reduce the background. The HXI started observations 12 days before the Hitomi loss, and successfully obtained data from G21.5$-$0.9, Crab and blank sky. Utilizing these data, we calibrate the detector response and study properties of in-orbit background. The observed Crab spectra agree well with a powerlaw model convolved with the detector response, within 5% accuracy. We find that albedo electrons in specified orbit strongly affect the background of Si top layer, and establish a screening method to reduce it. The background level over the full field of view after all the processing and screening is as low as the pre-flight requirement of $1$-$3\times10^{-4}$ counts s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ keV$^{-1}$., Comment: 46 pages, 18 figures, published in Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems

An on-ground observation program for high energy atmospheric phenomena in winter thunderstorms along Japan Sea has been performed via measurements of gamma-ray radiation, atmospheric electric field and low-frequency radio band. On February 11, 2017, the radiation detectors recorded gamma-ray emission lasting for 75 sec. The gamma-ray spectrum extended up to 20 MeV and was reproduced by a cutoff power-law model with a photon index of $1.36^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$, being consistent with a Bremsstrahlung radiation from a thundercloud (as known as a gamma-ray glow and a thunderstorm ground enhancement). Then the gamma-ray glow was abruptly terminated with a nearby lightning discharge. The low-frequency radio monitors, installed $\sim$50 km away from the gamma-ray observation site recorded leader development of an intra/inter-cloud discharge spreading over $\sim$60 km area with a $\sim$300 ms duration. The timing of the gamma-ray termination coincided with the moment when the leader development of the intra/inter-cloud discharge passed 0.7 km horizontally away from the radiation monitors. The intra/inter-cloud discharge started $\sim$15 km away from the gamma-ray observation site. Therefore, the glow was terminated by the leader development, while it did not trigger the lightning discharge in the present case., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Geophysical Research Letters

Hard X-ray astronomical observatories in orbit suffer from a significant amount of background due to radioactivation induced by cosmic-ray protons and/or geomagnetically trapped protons. Within the framework of a full Monte Carlo simulation, we present modeling of in-orbit instrumental background dominated by radioactivation. To reduce the computation time required by straightforward simulations of delayed emissions from activated isotopes, we insert a semi-analytical calculation that converts production probabilities of radioactive isotopes by interaction of the primary protons into decay rates at measurement time of all secondary isotopes. Therefore, our simulation method is separated into three steps: (1) simulation of isotope production, (2) semi-analytical conversion to decay rates, and (3) simulation of decays of the isotopes at measurement time. This method is verified by a simple setup that has a CdTe semiconductor detector, and shows a 100-fold improvement in efficiency over the straightforward simulation. The simulation framework was tested against data measured with a CdTe sensor in the Hard X-ray Imager onboard the Hitomi X-ray Astronomy Satellite, which was put into a low Earth orbit with an altitude of 570 km and an inclination of 31 degrees, and thus experienced a large amount of irradiation from geomagnetically trapped protons during its passages through the South Atlantic Anomaly. The simulation is able to treat full histories of the proton irradiation and multiple measurement windows. The simulation results agree very well with the measured data, showing that the measured background is well described by the combination of proton-induced radioactivation of the CdTe detector itself and thick Bi4Ge3O12 scintillator shields, leakage of cosmic X-ray background and albedo gamma-ray radiation, and emissions from naturally contaminated isotopes in the detector system., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures

The Canadian Astro-H Metrology System (CAMS) on the Hitomi X-ray satellite is a laser alignment system that measures the lateral displacement (X/Y) of the extensible optical bench (EOB) along the optical axis of the hard X-ray telescopes (HXTs). The CAMS consists of two identical units that together can be used to discern translation and rotation of the deployable element along the axis. This paper presents the results of in-flight usage of the CAMS during deployment of the EOB and during two observations (Crab and G21.5-0.9) with the HXTs. The CAMS was extremely important during the deployment operation by providing real-time positioning information of the EOB with micrometer scale resolution. In this work, we show how the CAMS improves data quality coming from the hard X-ray imagers. Moreover, we demonstrate that a metrology system is even more important as the angular resolution of the telescope increases. Lightning and thundercloud are the most dramatic natural particle accelerators on the Earth. Relativistic electrons accelerated by electric fields therein emit bremsstrahlung gamma rays, which have been detected at ground observations, by airborne detectors, and as terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) from space. The energy of the gamma rays is sufficiently high to potentially invoke atmospheric photonuclear reactions 14N(gamma, n)13N, which would produce neutrons and eventually positrons via beta-plus decay of generated unstable radioactive isotopes, especially 13N. However, no clear observational evidence for the reaction has been reported to date. Here we report the first detection of neutron and positron signals from lightning with a ground observation. During a thunderstorm on 6 February 2017 in Japan, a TGF-like intense flash (within 1 ms) was detected at our monitoring sites 0.5-1.7 km away from the lightning. The subsequent initial burst quickly subsided with an exponential decay constant of 40-60 ms, followed by a prolonged line emission at about 0.511 megaelectronvolt (MeV), lasting for a minute. The observed decay timescale and spectral cutoff at about 10 MeV of the initial emission are well explained with de-excitation gamma rays from the nuclei excited by neutron capture. The centre energy of the prolonged line emission corresponds to the electron-positron annihilation, and hence is the conclusive indication of positrons produced after the lightning. Our detection of neutrons and positrons is unequivocal evidence that natural lightning triggers photonuclear reactions. No other natural event on the Earth is known to trigger photonuclear reactions. We report on X-ray observations of the Dwarf Nova GK Persei performed by {\it NuSTAR} in 2015. GK Persei, behaving also as an Intermediate Polar, exhibited a Dwarf Nova outburst in 2015 March--April. The object was observed with {\sl NuSTAR} during the outburst state, and again in a quiescent state wherein the 15--50 keV flux was 33 times lower. Using a multi-temperature plasma emission and reflection model, the highest plasma temperature in the accretion column was measured as $19.7^{+1.3}_{-1.0}$~keV in outburst and $36.2^{+3.5}_{-3.2}$~keV in quiescence. The significant change of the maximum temperature is considered to reflect an accretion-induced decrease of the inner-disk radius $R_{\rm in}$, where accreting gas is captured by the magnetosphere. Assuming this radius scales as $R_{\rm in} \propto \dot{M}^{-2/7}$ where $\dot{M}$ is the mass accretion rate, we obtain $R_{\rm in} = 1.9 ^{+0.4}_{-0.2}~R_{\rm WD}$ and $R_{\rm in} = 7.4^{+2.1}_{-1.2}~R_{\rm WD}$ in outburst and quiescence respectively, where $R_{\rm WD}$ is the white-dwarf radius of this system. Utilising the measured temperatures and fluxes, as well as the standard mass-radius relation of white dwarfs, we estimate the white-dwarf mass as $M_{\rm WD} = 0.87~\pm~0.08~M_{\rm \odot}$ including typical systematic uncertainties by 7%. The surface magnetic field is also measured as $B \sim 5 \times 10^{5}$~G. These results exemplify a new X-ray method of estimating $M_{\rm WD}$ and $B$ of white dwarfs by using large changes in $\dot{M}$., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on NuSTAR observations of the Intermediate Polar GK Persei which also behaves as a Dwarf Nova. It exhibited a Dwarf Nova outburst in 2015 March-April. The object was observed in 3-79 keV X-rays with NuSTAR, once at the outburst peak, and again in 2015 September during quiescence. The 5-50 keV flux during the outburst was 26 times higher than that during the quiescence. With a multi-temperature emission model and a reflection model, we derived the post-shock temperature as 19.2 +/- 0.7 keV in the outburst, and 38.5 +4.1/-3.6 keV in the quiescence. This temperature difference is considered to reflect changes in the radius at which the accreting matter, forming an accretion disk, is captured by the magnetosphere of the white dwarf (WD). Assuming that this radius scales as the power of -2/7 of the mass accretion rate, and utilizing the two temperature measurements, as well as the standard mass-radius relation of WDs, we determined the WD mass in GK Persei as 0.90 +/- 0.06 solar masses. Gamma-ray polarization offers a unique probes into the geometry of the gamma-ray emission process in celestial objects. The Soft Gamma-ray Detector (SGD) onboard the X-ray observatory Hitomi is a Si/CdTe Compton camera and is expected to be an excellent polarimeter, as well as a highly sensitive spectrometer due to its good angular coverage and resolution for Compton scattering. A beam test of the final-prototype for the SGD Compton camera was conducted to demonstrate its polarimetric capability and to verify and calibrate the Monte Carlo simulation of the instrument. The modulation factor of the SGD prototype camera, evaluated for the inner and outer parts of the CdTe sensors as absorbers, was measured to be 0.649--0.701 (inner part) and 0.637--0.653 (outer part) at 122.2 keV and 0.610--0.651 (inner part) and 0.564--0.592 (outer part) at 194.5 keV at varying polarization angles with respect to the detector. This indicates that the relative systematic uncertainty of the modulation factor is as small as ~3%., Comment: accepted for publication in NIMA

Clusters of galaxies are the most massive gravitationally-bound objects in the Universe and are still forming. They are thus important probes of cosmological parameters and a host of astrophysical processes. Knowledge of the dynamics of the pervasive hot gas, which dominates in mass over stars in a cluster, is a crucial missing ingredient. It can enable new insights into mechanical energy injection by the central supermassive black hole and the use of hydrostatic equilibrium for the determination of cluster masses. X-rays from the core of the Perseus cluster are emitted by the 50 million K diffuse hot plasma filling its gravitational potential well. The Active Galactic Nucleus of the central galaxy NGC1275 is pumping jetted energy into the surrounding intracluster medium, creating buoyant bubbles filled with relativistic plasma. These likely induce motions in the intracluster medium and heat the inner gas preventing runaway radiative cooling; a process known as Active Galactic Nucleus Feedback. Here we report on Hitomi X-ray observations of the Perseus cluster core, which reveal a remarkably quiescent atmosphere where the gas has a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of 164+/-10 km/s in a region 30-60 kpc from the central nucleus. A gradient in the line-of-sight velocity of 150+/-70 km/s is found across the 60 kpc image of the cluster core. Turbulent pressure support in the gas is 4% or less of the thermodynamic pressure, with large scale shear at most doubling that estimate. We infer that total cluster masses determined from hydrostatic equilibrium in the central regions need little correction for turbulent pressure., Comment: 31 pages, 11 Figs, published in Nature July 8

The intermediate polar GK Per exhibited a dwarf nova outburst in March-April 2015. Suzaku X-ray telescope serendipitously captured the onset of the outburst during its pre-scheduled pointing observation spanning four days. In this paper, we present temporal and spectral analysis results of this outburst, together with those from archival data of quiescent obtained in 2009 and 2014. Our temporal analysis confirmed previously reported spin modulation of X-ray count rates in outburst with a WD spin period of P_WD=351.4+/-0.5 s. The modulation is also detected in the hard X-ray band (16-60 keV), and spectral modeling of the absorption suggests obscuration by a dense absorption with a line-of-sight column density of N_H>10^23 cm^-2. A complex time evolution of spin modulation profiles is seen; the spin minimum phase shifts from phase ~0.25 in the first half of the observation to ~0.65 in the second one, and the pulse shape significantly changes epoch by epoch. Spectral fitting in the Fe Kalpha band revealed an increase of the fluorescent line equivalent width, from ~80 eV (quiescent) to ~140 eV (outburst). The equivalent widths of He-like and H-like Fe Kalpha are consistent with being constant at ~40 eV in the two states. Broad-band spectral fitting in the 2-60 keV band resulted in a sub-solar Fe abundance of ~0.1 Z_sun and the maximum plasma temperature kT_max~50-60 keV when the isobaric cooling flow model was applied. The evolved, massive highly eccentric binary system, eta Carinae, underwent a periastron passage in the summer of 2014. We obtained two coordinated X-ray observations with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR during the elevated X-ray flux state and just before the X-ray minimum flux state around this passage. These NuSTAR observations clearly detected X-ray emission associated with eta Car extending up to ~50 keV for the first time. The NuSTAR spectrum above 10 keV can be fit with the bremsstrahlung tail from a kT ~6 keV plasma. This temperature is Delta kT ~2 keV higher than those measured from the iron K emission line complex, if the shocked gas is in collisional ionization equilibrium. This result may suggest that the companion star's pre-shock wind velocity is underestimated. The NuSTAR observation near the X-ray minimum state showed a gradual decline in the X-ray emission by 40% at energies above 5 keV in a day, the largest rate of change of the X-ray flux yet observed in individual eta Car observations. The column density to the hardest emission component, NH ~1e24 cm-2, marked one of the highest values ever observed for eta Car, strongly suggesting increased obscuration of the wind-wind colliding X-ray emission by the thick primary stellar wind prior to superior conjunction. Neither observation detected the power-law component in the extremely hard band that INTEGRAL and Suzaku observed prior to 2011. If the non-detection by NuSTAR is caused by absorption, the power-law source must be small and located very near the WWC apex. Alternatively, it may be that the power-law source is not related to either eta Car or the GeV gamma-ray source., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

The Soft Gamma-ray Detector (SGD), to be deployed onboard the {\it ASTRO-H} satellite, has been developed to provide the highest sensitivity observations of celestial sources in the energy band of 60-600~keV by employing a detector concept which uses a Compton camera whose field-of-view is restricted by a BGO shield to a few degree (narrow-FOV Compton camera). In this concept, the background from outside the FOV can be heavily suppressed by constraining the incident direction of the gamma ray reconstructed by the Compton camera to be consistent with the narrow FOV. We, for the first time, demonstrate the validity of the concept using background data taken during the thermal vacuum test and the low-temperature environment test of the flight model of SGD on ground. We show that the measured background level is suppressed to less than 10\% by combining the event rejection using the anti-coincidence trigger of the active BGO shield and by using Compton event reconstruction techniques. More than 75\% of the signals from the field-of-view are retained against the background rejection, which clearly demonstrates the improvement of signal-to-noise ratio. The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly successful X-ray missions developed by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), with a planned launch in 2015. The ASTRO-H mission is equipped with a suite of sensitive instruments with the highest energy resolution ever achieved at E > 3 keV and a wide energy range spanning four decades in energy from soft X-rays to gamma-rays. The simultaneous broad band pass, coupled with the high spectral resolution of Delta E < 7 eV of the micro-calorimeter, will enable a wide variety of important science themes to be pursued. The Suzaku X-ray observatory monitored the supermassive binary system Eta Carinae 10 times during the whole 5.5 year orbital cycle between 2005-2011. This series of observations presents the first long-term monitoring of this enigmatic system in the extremely hard X-ray band between 15-40 keV. During most of the orbit, the 15-25 keV emission varied similarly to the 2-10 keV emission, indicating an origin in the hard energy tail of the kT ~4 keV wind-wind collision (WWC) plasma. However, the 15-25 keV emission declined only by a factor of 3 around periastron when the 2-10 keV emission dropped by two orders of magnitude due probably to an eclipse of the WWC plasma. The observed minimum in the 15-25 keV emission occurred after the 2-10 keV flux had already recovered by a factor of ~3. This may mean that the WWC activity was strong, but hidden behind the thick primary stellar wind during the eclipse. The 25-40 keV flux was rather constant through the orbital cycle, at the level measured with INTEGRAL in 2004. This result may suggest a connection of this flux component to the gamma-ray source detected in this field. The Helium-like Fe Kalpha line complex at ~6.7 keV became strongly distorted toward periastron as seen in the previous cycle. The 5-9 keV spectra can be reproduced well with a two-component spectral model, which includes plasma in collision equilibrium (CE) and a plasma in non-equilibrium ionization (NEI) with tau ~1e11 cm-3 s-1. The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly successful X-ray missions initiated by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). ASTRO-H will investigate the physics of the high-energy universe via a suite of four instruments, covering a very wide energy range, from 0.3 keV to 600 keV. These instruments include a high-resolution, high-throughput spectrometer sensitive over 0.3-2 keV with high spectral resolution of Delta E < 7 eV, enabled by a micro-calorimeter array located in the focal plane of thin-foil X-ray optics; hard X-ray imaging spectrometers covering 5-80 keV, located in the focal plane of multilayer-coated, focusing hard X-ray mirrors; a wide-field imaging spectrometer sensitive over 0.4-12 keV, with an X-ray CCD camera in the focal plane of a soft X-ray telescope; and a non-focusing Compton-camera type soft gamma-ray detector, sensitive in the 40-600 keV band. Detailed spectral analysis of the Galactic X-ray background emission, or the Galactic Ridge X-ray Emission (GRXE), is presented. To study the origin of the emission, broad-band and high-quality GRXE spectra were produced from 18 pointing observations with Suzaku in the Galactic bulge region, with the total exposure of 1 Ms. The spectra were successfully fitted by a sum of two major spectral components; a spectral model of magnetic accreting white dwarfs with a mass of 0.66 (0.59-0.75) solar, and a softer optically-thin thermal emission with a plasma temperature of 1.2-1.5 keV which is attributable to coronal X-ray sources. When combined with previous studies which employed high spatial resolution of the Chandra satellite (e.g. Revnivtsev et al. 2009, Nature), the present spectroscopic result gives another strong support to a scenario that the GRXE is essentially an assembly of numerous discrete faint X-ray stars. The detected GRXE flux in the hard X-ray band was used to estimate the number density of the unresolved hard X-ray sources. When integrated over a luminosity range of ~10^30-10^34 erg/s, the result is consistent with a value which was reported previously by directly resolving faint point sources., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the result of a systematic study of pileup phenomena seen in the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer, an X-ray CCD instrument, onboard the Suzaku observatory. Using a data set of observed sources in a wide range of brightness and spectral hardness, we characterized the pileup fraction, spectral hardening, and grade migration as a function of observed count rate in a frame per pixel. Using the pileup fraction as a measure of the degree of pileup, we found that the relative spectral hardening (the hardness ratio normalized to the intrinsic spectral hardness), branching ratio of split events, and that of detached events increase monotonically as the pileup fraction increases, despite the variety of brightness and hardness of the sample sources. We derived the pileup fraction as a function of radius used for event extraction. Upon practical considerations, we found that events outside of the radius with a pileup fraction of 1% or 3% are useful for spectral analysis. Improvements of in-orbit calibration of GSO scintillators in the Hard X-ray Detector on board Suzaku are reported. To resolve an apparent change of the energy scale of GSO which appeared across the launch for unknown reasons, consistent and thorough re-analyses of both pre-launch and in-orbit data have been performed. With laboratory experiments using spare hardware, the pulse height offset, corresponding to zero energy input, was found to change by ~0.5 of the full analog voltage scale, depending on the power supply. Furthermore, by carefully calculating all the light outputs of secondaries from activation lines used in the in-orbit gain determination, their energy deposits in GSO were found to be effectively lower, by several percent, than their nominal energies. Taking both these effects into account, the in-orbit data agrees with the on-ground measurements within ~5%, without employing the artificial correction introduced in the previous work (Kokubun et al. 2007). With this knowledge, we updated the data processing, the response, and the auxiliary files of GSO, and reproduced the HXD-PIN and HXD-GSO spectra of the Crab Nebula over 12-300 keV by a broken powerlaw with a break energy of ~110 keV., Comment: Suzaku HXD-GSO detector, calibration update; PASJ, May 2011

Context. White dwarfs (WDs) in cataclysmic variables (CVs) are important experimental laboratories where the electron degeneracy is taking place on a macroscopic scale. Magnetic CVs increase in number especially in the hard X-ray band (>10 keV) thanks to sensitive hard X-ray missions. Aims. From X-ray spectroscopy, we estimate the masses of nearby WDs in moderately-magnetized CVs, or Intermediate Polars (IPs). Methods. Using the Suzaku satellite, we aquired wide-band spectra of 17 IPs, covering 3-50 keV. An accretion column model of Suleimanov et al. (2005) and an optically-thin thermal emission code were used to construct a spectral emission model of IPs with resolved Fe emission lines. By simultaneously fitting the Fe line complex and the hard X-ray continuum of individual spectra, the shock temperature and the WD mass were determined with a better accuracy than in previous studies. Results. We determined the WD masses of the 17 IPs with statistical fitting errors of ~0.1-0.2 Msun in many cases. The WD mass of a recently-found IP, IGR J17195-4100, was also estimated for the first time (1.03+0.24-0.22 Msun). The average WD mass of the sample is 0.88 \pm 0.25 Msun. When our results were compared with previous X-ray mass determinations, we found significant deviation in a few systems although the reason of this is unclear. We report results of the 2006 April multi-wavelengths campaign of SS 433, focusing on X-ray data observed with Suzaku at two orbital phases (in- and out-of- eclipse) and simultaneous optical spectroscopic observations. By analyzing the Fe25 K_alpha lines originating from the jets, we detect rapid variability of the Doppler shifts, dz/dt ~ 0.019/0.33 day^-1, which is larger than those expected from the precession and/or nodding motion. This phenomenon probably corresponding to "jitter" motions observed for the first time in X-rays, for which significant variability both in the jet angle and intrinsic speed is required. From the time lag of optical Doppler curves from those of X-rays, we estimate the distance of the optical jets from the base to be ~(3-4) \times 10^14 cm. Based on the radiatively cooling jet model, we determine the innermost temperature of the jets to be T_0 = 13 +/- 2 keV and 16 +/- 3 keV (the average of the blue and red jets) for the out-of-eclipse and in-eclipse phase, respectively, from the line intensity ratio of Fe25 K_alpha and Fe26 K_alpha. While the broad band continuum spectra over the 5--40 keV band in eclipse is consistent with a multi-temperature bremsstrahlung emission expected from the jets, and its reflection component from cold matter, the out-of-eclipse spectrum is harder than the jet emission with the base temperature determined above, implying the presence of an additional hard component., Comment: 12 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

Using the Suzaku X-ray Imaging Spectrometer, we performed a 130 ks observation of an extended X-ray emission, which was shown by ROSAT and Chandra observations to apparently associate with the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. The obtained $0.5-6$ keV spectrum was successfully fitted with a redshifted thin thermal plasma emission model whose temperature and redshift are $2.2^{+0.2}_{-0.3} $keV (at the rest frame) and $0.34\pm0.02$, respectively. Derived parameters, including the temperature, redshift, and luminosity, indicate that the extended X-ray source is a background cluster of galaxies, and its projected location falls, by chance, on the direction of the proper motion of 47 Tucanae., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ Vol. 61 No. 5

We analyse new results of Chandra and Suzaku which found a flux of hard X-ray emission from the compact region around Sgr A$^\ast$ (r ~ 100 pc). We suppose that this emission is generated by accretion processes onto the central supermassive blackhole when an unbounded part of captured stars obtains an additional momentum. As a result a flux of subrelativistic protons is generated near the Galactic center which heats the background plasma up to temperatures about 6-10 keV and produces by inverse bremsstrahlung a flux of non-thermal X-ray emission in the energy range above 10 keV., Comment: to be published in PASJ, v.61, No.5, 2009

We showed that if the non-thermal emission from the Galactic center in the range 14-40 keV is due to inverse bremsstrahlung emission of subrelativistic protons, their interactions with hot and cold fractions of the interstellar medium are equally important. Our estimation show that about 30% of the total non-thermal flux from the GC in the range 14-40 keV is generated in regions of cold gas while the rest is produced by proton interaction with hot plasma. From the spatial distribution of 6.7 keV iron line we concluded the spatial distribution of hot plasma is strongly non-uniform that should be taken into account in analysis of protons propagation in the GC. From the Suzaku data we got independent estimates for the diffusion coefficient of subrelativistic protons in the GC, which was in the range $ 10^{26} - 10^{27}$ cm$^2$s$^{-1}$, Comment: To be published in PASJ, v.61, No.5, 2009

Suzaku Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) achieved the lowest background level than any other previously or currently operational missions sensitive in the energy range of 10--600 keV, by utilizing PIN photodiodes and GSO scintillators mounted in the BGO active shields to reject particle background and Compton-scattered events as much as possible. Because it does not have imaging capability nor rocking mode for the background monitor, the sensitivity is limited by the reproducibility of the non X-ray background (NXB) model. We modeled the HXD NXB, which varies with time as well as other satellites with a low-earth orbit, by utilizing several parameters, including particle monitor counts and satellite orbital/attitude information. The model background is supplied as an event file in which the background events are generated by random numbers, and can be analyzed in the same way as the real data. The reproducibility of the NXB model depends on the event selection criteria (such as cut-off rigidity and energy band) and the integration time, and the 1sigma systematic error is estimated to be less than 3% (PIN 15--40 keV) and 1% (GSO 50--100 keV) for more than 10 ksec exposure., Comment: 29 pages, 45 figures, will appear on the PASJ 61, Suzaku 3rd issue

The eclipsing low-mass X-ray binary AX J1745.6-2901 was observed with Suzaku in its outburst phase. Combining the Chandra observation made 1.5 month earlier than Suzaku, we determined the orbital period to be 30063.76+/-0.14 s. We found deep flux dips prior to the eclipse phase of orbit. The X-ray spectrum of the persistent phase is described with a combination of a direct and a scattered-in by dust emissions. During the eclipse, the X-ray spectrum becomes only the dust scattering (scattered-in) component. The optical depth of the dust-scattering is ~10.5 at 1 keV. The direct component is composed of a blackbody likely from the neutron star surface and a disk-blackbody. No power-law component is found in the hard energy band up to 30 keV. A clear edge at ~7.1 keV in the deep dip spectrum indicates that the major portion of Fe in the absorber is neutral or at low ionization state. We discovered four narrow absorption lines near the K-shell transition energies of Fe XXV, Fe XXVI, and Ni XXVII. Five on-plane regions within +/- 0.8deg of the Galactic center were observed with the Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) and the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) onboard Suzaku. From all regions, significant hard X-ray emission was detected with HXD-PIN up to 40 keV, in addition to the extended plasma emission which is dominant in the XIS band. The hard X-ray signals are inferred to come primarily from a spatially extended source, rather than from a small number of bright discrete objects. Contributions to the HXD data from catalogued X-ray sources, typically brighter than 1 mCrab, were estimated and removed using information from Suzaku and other satellites. Even after this removal, the hard X-ray signals remained significant, exhibiting a typical 12--40 keV surface brightness of 4E-10 erg cm-2 s-1 deg-2 and power-law-like spectra with a photon index of 1.8. Combined fittings to the XIS and HXD-PIN spectra confirm that a separate hard tail component is superposed onto the hot thermal emission, confirming a previous report based on the XIS data. Over the 5--40 keV band, the hard tail is spectrally approximated by a power law of photon index ~2, but better by those with somewhat convex shapes. Suzaku deep observations have discovered two highly significant nonthermal X-ray sources, Suzaku J1804$-$2142 (Src 1) and Suzaku J1804$-$2140 (Src 2), positionally coincident with the unidentified TeV $\gamma$-ray source, HESS J1804$-$216. The X-ray sources are not time variable and show no counterpart in other wavebands, except for the TeV source. Src 1 is unresolved at Suzaku spatial resolution, whereas Src 2 is extended or composed of multiple sources. The X-ray spectra are highly absorbed, hard, and featureless, and are well fitted by absorbed power-law models with best-fit photon indices and absorption columns of $-0.3_{-0.5}^{+0.5}$ and $0.2_{-0.2}^{+2.0}\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ for Src 1, and $1.7_{-1.0}^{+1.4}$ and $1.1_{-0.6}^{+1.0}\times 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ for Src 2. The measured X-ray absorption to the latter source is significantly larger than the total Galactic neutral hydrogen column in that direction. The unabsorbed 2--10 keV band luminosities are $7.5\times 10^{32}(d/{\rm 5 kpc})^2$ ergs s$^{-1}$ (Src 1) and $1.3\times 10^{33}(d/{\rm 5 kpc})^2$ ergs s$^{-1}$ (Src 2), where $d$ is the source distance. Among the handful of TeV sources with known X-ray counterparts, HESS J1804$-$216 has the largest ratio of TeV $\gamma$-ray to hard X-ray fluxes. We discuss the nature of the emission and propose the Suzaku sources as plausible counterparts to the TeV source, although further observations are necessary to confirm this., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, in press

The Hitomi (ASTRO-H) mission is the sixth Japanese X-ray astronomy satellite developed by a large international collaboration, including Japan, USA, Canada, and Europe. The mission aimed to provide the highest energy resolution ever achieved at E greater than 2 keV, using a microcalorimeter instrument, and to cover a wide energy range spanning four decades in energy from soft X-rays to gamma-rays. After a successful launch on 2016 February 17, the spacecraft lost its function on 2016 March 26, but the commissioning phase for about a month provided valuable information on the on-board instruments and the spacecraft system, including astrophysical results obtained from first light observations. The paper describes the Hitomi (ASTRO-H) mission, its capabilities, the initial operation, and the instruments/spacecraft performances confirmed during the commissioning operations for about a month.
