Search

The redshifted 21 cm line signal is a powerful probe of the cosmic dawn and the epoch of reionization. The global spectrum can potentially be detected with a single antenna and spectrometer. However, this measurement requires an extremely accurate calibration of the instrument to facilitate the separation of the 21 cm signal from the much brighter foregrounds and possible variations in the instrument response. Understanding how the measurement errors propagate in a realistic instrument system and affect system calibration is the focus of this work. We simulate a 21 cm global spectrum observation based on the noise wave calibration scheme. We focus on how measurement errors in reflection coefficients affect the noise temperature and how typical errors impact the recovery of the 21 cm signal, especially in the frequency domain. Results show that for our example set up, a typical vector network analyzer (VNA) measurement error in the magnitude of the reflection coefficients of the antenna, receiver, and open cable, which are 0.001, 0.001, and 0.002 (linear), respectively, would result in a 200 mK deviation on the detected signal, and a typical measurement error of 0.48 degree, 0.78 degree, or 0.15 degree in the respective phases would cause a 40 mK deviation. The VNA measurement error can greatly affect the result of a 21 cm global spectrum experiment using this calibration technique, and such a feature could be mistaken for or be combined with the 21 cm signal, Comment: 29 pages, 20 figures

At the Royal Society meeting in 2023, we have mainly presented our lunar orbit array concept called DSL, and also briefly introduced a concept of a lunar surface array, LARAF. As the DSL concept had been presented before, in this article we introduce the LARAF. We propose to build an array in the far side of the Moon, with a master station which handles the data collection and processing, and 20 stations with maximum baseline of 10 km. Each station consists 12 membrane antenna units, and the stations are connected to the master station by power line and optical fiber. The array will make interferometric observation in the 0.1-50 MHz band during the lunar night, powered by regenerated fuel cells (RFCs). The whole array can be carried to the lunar surface with a heavy rocket mission, and deployed with a rover in 8 months. Such an array would be an important step in the long term development of lunar based ultralong wavelength radio astronomy. It has a sufficiently high sensitivity to observe many radio sources in the sky, though still short of the dark age fluctuations. We investigate the feasibility of using the velocity acoustic oscillations (VAO) features on the Cosmic Dawn 21 cm power spectrum to probe small-scale density fluctuations. In the standard cold dark matter (CDM) model, Pop III stars form in minihalos and affect the 21 cm signal through Ly$\alpha$ and X-ray radiation. Such a process is modulated by the relative motion between dark matter and baryons, generating the VAO wiggles on the 21 cm power spectrum. In the fuzzy or warm dark matter models for which the number of minihalos is reduced, the VAO wiggles are weaker or even fully invisible. We investigate the wiggle features in the CDM with different astrophysical models and in different dark matter models. We find: 1) In the CDM model the relative streaming velocities can generate the VAO wiggles for broad ranges of parameters $f_*$, $\zeta_X$ and $f_{\rm esc,LW}\zeta_{\rm LW}$, though for different parameters the wiggles would appear at different redshifts and have different amplitudes. 2) For the axion model with $m_{\rm a} \lesssim10^{-19}$ eV, the VAO wiggles are negligible. In the mixed model, the VAO signal is sensitive to the axion fraction. For example, the wiggles almost disappear when $f_{\rm a} \gtrsim 10\%$ for $m_{\rm a}=10^{-21}$ eV. Therefore, the VAO signal can be an effective indicator for small-scale density fluctuations and a useful probe of the nature of dark matter. A significant excess of the stellar mass density at high redshift has been discovered from the early data release of James Webb Space Telescope ($\it{JWST}$), and it may require a high star formation efficiency. However, this will lead to large number density of ionizing photons in the epoch of reionization (EoR), so that the reionization history will be changed, which can arise tension with the current EoR observations. Warm dark matter (WDM), via the free streaming effect, can suppress the formation of small-scale structure as well as low-mass galaxies. This provides an effective way to decrease the ionizing photons when considering a large star formation efficiency in high-$z$ massive galaxies without altering the cosmic reionization history. On the other hand, the constraints on the properties of warm dark matter can be derived from the $\it JWST$ observations. In this work, we study WDM as a possible solution to reconcile the $\it JWST$ stellar mass density of high-$z$ massive galaxies and reionization history. We find that, the $\it JWST$ high-$z$ comoving cumulative stellar mass density alone has no significant preference for either CDM or WDM model. But using the observational data of other stellar mass density measurements and reionization history, we obtain that the WDM particle mass with $m_{\text{W}} = 0.51^{+0.22}_{-0.12}$ keV and star formation efficiency parameter $f_{*}^0>0.39$ in 2$\sigma$ confidence level can match both the $\it JWST$ high-$z$ comoving cumulative stellar mass density and the reionization history., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. ALMA observations have detected extended ($\simeq 10$ kpc) [C II] halos around high-redshift ($z \gtrsim 5$) star-forming galaxies. If such extended structures are common, they may have an impact on the line intensity mapping (LIM) signal. We compute the LIM power spectrum including both the central galaxy and the [C II] halo, and study the detectability of such signal in an ALMA LIM survey. We model the central galaxy and the [C II] halo brightness with a S\'ersic+exponential profile. The model has two free parameters: the effective radius ratio $f_{R_e}$, and the central surface brightness ratio, $f_{\Sigma}$, between the two components. [C II] halos can significantly boost the LIM power spectrum signal. For example, for relatively compact [C II] halos ($f_\Sigma=0.4$, $f_{R_{\rm e}}=2.0$), the signal is boosted by $\simeq 20$ times; for more extended and diffuse halos ($f_\Sigma=0.1, f_{R_{\rm e}}=6.0$), the signal is boosted by $\simeq 100$ times. For the ALMA ASPECS survey (resolution $\theta_{\rm beam} = 1.13''$, survey area $\Omega_{\rm survey}=2.9\,\rm arcmin^{2}$), the [C II] power spectrum is detectable only if the deL14d [C II] - SFR relation holds. However, with an optimized survey ($\theta_{\rm beam} = 0.232''$, $\Omega_{\rm survey}=2.0\,\rm deg^{2}$), the power spectrum is detectable for almost all the [C II] - SFR relations considered in this paper. Such a survey can constrain $f_\Sigma$ ($f_{R_{\rm e}}$) with a relative uncertainty of $\sim 15\%$ ($\sim 10\%$). Observations are beginning to constrain the history of the epoch of reionization (EoR). Modeling the reionization process is indispensable to interpret the observations, to infer the properties of ionizing sources, and to probe the various astrophysical processes from the observational data. Here we present an improved version of the semi-numerical simulation islandFAST, by incorporating inhomogeneous recombinations and a corresponding inhomogeneous ionizing background, and simulate the reionization process of neutral islands during the late EoR. We find that the islands are more fragmented in models with inhomogeneous recombinations than the case with a homogeneous recombination number. In order to investigate the effects of basic assumptions in the reionization modeling, we compare the results from islandFAST with those from 21cmFAST for the same assumptions on the ionizing photon sources and sinks, to find how the morphology of the ionization field and the reionization history depend on the different treatments of these two models. The presence of an extra radio background besides the cosmic microwave background has important implications for the observation of the 21-cm signal during the cosmic Dark Ages, Cosmic Dawn, and epoch of Reionization. The strong absorption trough found in the 21-cm global spectrum measured by the EDGES experiment, which has a much greater depth than the standard model prediction, has drawn great interest to this scenario, but more generally it is still of great interest to consider such a cosmic radio background (CRB) in the early Universe. To be effective in affecting the 21-cm signal at early time, such a radio background must be produced by sources which can emit strong radio signals but modest amount of X-rays, so that the gas is not heated up too early. We investigate the scenario that such a radio background is produced by the primordial black holes (PBHs). For PBH with a single mass, we find that if the PBHs' abundance $\log(f_{\rm PBH})$ (ratio of total PBH mass density to total matter density) and mass satisfy the relation $\log(f_{\rm PBH}) \sim -1.8\log(M_\bullet/{\rm M}_{\odot})-3.5$ for $1\,{\rm M}_\odot \lesssim M_\bullet \lesssim 300 {\rm M}_\odot$, and have jet emission, they can generate a CRB required for reproducing the 21-cm absorption signal seen by the EDGES. The accretion rate can be boosted if the PBHs are surrounded by dark matter halos, which permits lower $f_{\rm PBH}$ value to satisfy the EDGES observation. In the latter scenario, since the accretion rate can evolve rapidly during the Cosmic Dawn, the frequency (redshift) and depth of the absorption trough can determine the mass and abundance of the PBHs simultaneously. For absorption trough redshift $\sim$ 17 and depth $\sim -500$ mK, it corresponds to $M_\bullet \sim 1.05\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$ and $f_{\rm PBH}\sim 1.5\times10^{-4}$., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in PRD

We theoretically investigate the recovery of global spectrum (monopole) from visibilities (cross-correlation only) measured by the interferometer array and the feasibility of extracting 21 cm signal of cosmic dawn. In our approach, the global spectrum is obtained by solving the monopole and higher-order components simultaneously from the visibilities measured with up to thousands of baselines. Using this algorithm, the monopole of both foreground and the 21 cm signal can be correctly recovered in a broad range of conditions. We find that a 3D baseline distribution can have much better performance than a 2D (planar) baseline distribution, particularly when there is a lack of shorter baselines. We simulate for ground-based 2D and 3D array configurations, and a cross-shaped space array located at the Sun-Earth L2 point that can form 3D baselines through orbital precession. In all simulations we obtain good recovered global spectrum, and successfully extract the 21 cm signal from it, with reasonable number of antennas and observation time., Comment: 18 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Cross-correlating the data of neutral hydrogen (HI) 21cm intensity mapping with galaxy surveys is an effective method to extract astrophysical and cosmological information. In this work, we investigate the cross-correlation of MeerKAT single-dish mode HI intensity mapping and China Space Station Telescope (CSST) spectroscopic galaxy surveys. We simulate a survey area of $\sim 300$ $\mathrm{deg}^2$ of MeerKAT and CSST surveys at $z=0.5$ using Multi-Dark N-body simulation. The PCA algorithm is applied to remove the foregrounds of HI intensity mapping, and signal compensation is considered to solve the signal loss problem in the HI-galaxy cross power spectrum caused by the foreground removal process. We find that from CSST galaxy auto and MeerKAT-CSST cross power spectra, the constraint accuracy of the parameter product $\Omega_{\rm HI}b_{\rm HI}r_{{\rm HI},g}$ can reach to $\sim1\%$, which is about one order of magnitude higher than the current results. After performing the full MeerKAT HI intensity mapping survey with 5000 deg$^2$ survey area, the accuracy can be enhanced to $<0.3\%$. Line intensity mapping (LIM) is a promising probe to study star formation, the large-scale structure of the Universe, and the epoch of reionization (EoR). Since carbon monoxide (CO) is the second most abundant molecule in the Universe except for molecular hydrogen ${\rm H}_2$, it is suitable as a tracer for LIM surveys. However, just like other LIM surveys, CO intensity mapping also suffers strong foreground contamination that needs to be eliminated for extracting valuable astrophysical and cosmological information. In this work, we take $^{12}$CO($\it J$=1-0) emission line as an example to investigate whether deep learning method can effectively recover the signal by removing the foregrounds. The CO(1-0) intensity maps are generated by N-body simulations considering CO luminosity and halo mass relation, and we discuss two cases with median and low CO signals by comparing different relations. We add foregrounds generated from real observations, including thermal dust, spinning dust, free-free, synchrotron emission and CMB anisotropy. The beam with sidelobe effect is also considered. Our deep learning model is built upon ResUNet, which combines image generation algorithm UNet with the state-of-the-art architecture of deep learning, ResNet. The principal component analysis (PCA) method is employed to preprocess data before feeding it to the ResUNet. We find that, in the case of low instrumental noise, our UNet can efficiently reconstruct the CO signal map with correct line power spectrum by removing the foregrounds and recovering PCA signal loss and beam effects. The free-free absorption of low frequency radio waves by thermal electrons in the warm ionized medium of our Galaxy becomes very significant at $\lesssim 10$ MHz (ultralong-wavelength), and the absorption strength depends on the radio frequency. Upcoming space experiments such as the Discovering Sky at the Longest wavelength (DSL) and Farside Array for Radio Science Investigations of the Dark ages and Exoplanets (FARSIDE) will produce high-resolution multi-frequency sky maps at the ultralong-wavelength, providing a new window to observe the Universe. In this paper we propose that from these ultralong-wavelength multi-frequency maps, the three-dimensional distribution of the Galactic electrons can be reconstructed. This novel and robust reconstruction of the Galactic electron distribution will be a key science case of those space missions. Ultralong-wavelength observations will be a powerful tool for studying the astrophysics relevant to the Galactic electron distribution, for example, the impacts of supernova explosions on electron distribution, and the interaction between interstellar atoms and ionizing photons escaped from the HII regions around massive stars. The development of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are both based on the tenet of "science and technology are people-oriented", and both need to achieve efficient communication with the human brain. Based on multi-disciplinary research in systems neuroscience, computer architecture, and functional organic materials, we proposed the concept of using AI to simulate the operating principles and materials of the brain in hardware to develop brain-inspired intelligence technology, and realized the preparation of neuromorphic computing devices and basic materials. We simulated neurons and neural networks in terms of material and morphology, using a variety of organic polymers as the base materials for neuroelectronic devices, for building neural interfaces as well as organic neural devices and silicon neural computational modules. We assemble organic artificial synapses with simulated neurons from silicon-based Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) into organic artificial neurons, the basic components of neural networks, and later construct biological neural network models based on the interpreted neural circuits. Finally, we also discuss how to further build neuromorphic devices based on these organic artificial neurons, which have both a neural interface friendly to nervous tissue and interact with information from real biological neural networks., Comment: This article need to update the corrected figure and data

The JWST early release data show unexpected high stellar mass densities of massive galaxies at $7

The shape of the faint-end of the high-z galaxy luminosity function (LF) informs early star formation and reionization physics during the Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Reionization. Until recently, based on the strong gravitational lensing cluster deep surveys, the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) has found a potential turnover in the ultraviolet (UV) LF at z$\sim$6. In this paper, we analyze the contribution of extremely faint galaxies with the magnitude larger than the turnover magnitude in LF to cosmic reionization. We apply the measurement from HFF to our suppressed star formation efficiency model, including three free parameters: halo mass threshold $M_t$, curvature parameter $\beta$ and a UV conversion factor $l_{\rm UV}$. According to our fit of 68\% confidence level, the high-redshift star formation in haloes smaller than $ M_t=1.82^{+2.86}_{-1.08}\times10^{10} \rm M_{\odot}$ is found to be dampened. The turnover magnitude $\rm \gtrsim -13.99-2.45$, correspondingly the halo mass $\lesssim(4.57+20.03)\times10^{9} \rm M_{\odot}$. We find that the absorption trough in the global 21-cm signal is sensitive to our SFE model parameters. Together with ($\beta$, $l_{\rm UV}$) = ($2.17^{+2.42}_{-1.72}$, $9.33^{+0.43}_{-0.42} \rm ~erg~yr ~s^{-1}M_{\odot}^{-1})$, the trough locates at $\sim$ $134^{+10}_{-17}$ $\rm MHz$ with an amplitude of $\sim$ $-237^{-6}_{+7}$ $\rm mK$, compared to (106\rm MHz, -212\rm mK) in the absence of turnover. Besides, we find that the star formation of faint galaxies has also an impact on the 21-cm power spectra. The best fitting peak power decreases by $\sim4\%$ and shifts towards smaller scales from $0.88 h \rm Mpc^{-1}$ to $0.91 h \rm Mpc^{-1}$. AliCPT-1 is the first Chinese CMB experiment aiming for high precision measurement of Cosmic Microwave Background B-mode polarization. The telescope, currently under deployment in Tibet, will observe in two frequency bands centered at 90 and 150 GHz. We forecast the CMB lensing reconstruction, lensing-galaxy as well as lensing-CIB (Cosmic Infrared Background) cross correlation signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for AliCPT-1. We consider two stages with different integrated observation time, namely "4 module*yr" (first stage) and "48 module*yr" (final stage). For lensing reconstruction, we use three different quadratic estimators, namely temperature-only, polarization-only and minimum-variance estimators, using curved sky geometry. We take into account the impact of inhomogeneous hit counts as well as of the mean-field bias due to incomplete sky coverage. In the first stage, our results show that the 150 GHz channel is able to measure the lensing signal at $15\sigma$ significance with the minimum-variance estimator. In the final stage, the measurement significance will increase to $31\sigma$. We also combine the two frequency data in the harmonic domain to optimize the SNR. Our result show that the coadding procedure can significantly reduce the reconstruction bias in the multiple range l>800. Thanks to the high quality of the polarization data in the final stage of AliCPT-1, the EB estimator will dominate the lensing reconstruction in this stage. We also estimate the SNR of cross-correlations between AliCPT-1 CMB lensing and other tracers of the large scale structure of the universe. For its cross-correlation with DESI galaxies/quasars, we report the cross-correlation SNR = 10-20 for the 4 redshift bins at 0.05

The radio sky at frequencies below $\sim10$ MHz is still largely unknown, this remains the last unexplored part of the electromagnetic spectrum in astronomy. The upcoming space experiments aiming at such low frequencies (ultra-long wavelength or ultra-low frequency) would benefit from reasonable expectations of the sky brightness distribution at relevant frequencies. In this work, we develop a radio sky model that is valid down to $\sim1$ MHz. In addition to the discrete HII objects, we take into account the free-free absorption by thermal electrons in the Milky Way's warm ionized medium (WIM). This absorption effect becomes obvious at $\lesssim10$ MHz, and could make the global radio spectrum turn over at $\sim3$ MHz. Our sky map shows unique features at the ultra-long wavelengths, including a darker Galactic plane in contrast to the sky at higher frequencies, and the huge shadows of the spiral arms on the sky map. It would be a useful guidance for designing the future ultra-long wavelength observations. The absorption feature in the global spectrum is likely the first 21 cm observable from the cosmic dawn, which provides valuable insights into the earliest history of structure formation. We run a set of high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations of early structure formation to assess the effect of non-linear structure formation on the maximum absorption level (i.e. assuming the spin temperature coupling is saturated) of the global 21 cm spectrum in the standard cosmological framework. We ignore the star formation and feedbacks, which also tends to reduce the absorption signal, but take into account the inevitable non-linear density fluctuations in the intergalactic medium (IGM), shock heating, and Compton heating, which can reduce the absorption level. We found that the combination of these reduced the maximum absorption signal by $\sim 15\%$ at redshift 17, as compared with the homogeneous or linearly fluctuating IGM. Ali CMB Polarization Telescope (AliCPT-1) is the first CMB degree-scale polarimeter to be deployed on the Tibetan plateau at 5,250m above sea level. AliCPT-1 is a 90/150 GHz 72 cm aperture, two-lens refracting telescope cooled down to 4 K. Alumina lenses, 800mm in diameter, image the CMB in a 33.4{\deg} field of view on a 636mm wide focal plane. The modularized focal plane consists of dichroic polarization-sensitive Transition-Edge Sensors (TESes). Each module includes 1,704 optically active TESes fabricated on a 150mm diameter silicon wafer. Each TES array is read out with a microwave multiplexing readout system capable of a multiplexing factor up to 2,048. Such a large multiplexing factor has allowed the practical deployment of tens of thousands of detectors, enabling the design of a receiver that can operate up to 19 TES arrays for a total of 32,376 TESes. AliCPT-1 leverages the technological advancements in the detector design from multiple generations of previously successful feedhorn-coupled polarimeters, and in the instrument design from BICEP-3, but applied on a larger scale. The cryostat receiver is currently under integration and testing. During the first deployment year, the focal plane will be populated with up to 4 TES arrays. Further TES arrays will be deployed in the following years, fully populating the focal plane with 19 arrays on the fourth deployment year.
