This paper describes evaluation process of bending strengths of plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite (HAp) coatings. Plasma-sprayed HAp coatings are widely used in the fields of medical implant in order to improve the biocompatibility of substrate alloys in vivo. Their strength is normally evaluated by indentation-fracture method (IF method) or shearing tests. However, these results are considerably varied because of the pores on the surfaces of coatings and to accurately discuss the quality of coatings, the effects of pore size distributions on their strengths must be considered. The maximum pore size was then predicted using extreme statistics and modified Saltycov's method. In order to calculate fracture toughness of the specimen, indentation fracture method (IF) was applied. Fracture probability model were then used to determine the strength of the coating layers. Abstract??Spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy with conservation of the splenic artery and vein was recently devised as a feasible operation. We report the case of a patient who underwent spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy with conservation of the splenic artery and vein, combined with distal gastrectomy, for gastric cancer and a distal pancreatic lesion. Thus, unnecessary total gastrectomy was avoided. The operative blood loss and operative time were 630?ml and 465?min, respectively. The patient's postoperative course was complicated by a minor pancreatic fistula, which required daily irrigation and drainage, but she recovered and was discharged from hospital. This case report demonstrates that spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy with conservation of the splenic artery and vein combined with distal gastrectomy can be performable synchronously and is a feasible alternative to avoid unnecessary total gastrectomy. The low latitude ionosphere and thermosphere are strongly disturbed during and shortly after geomagnetic storms. We use novel Jicamarca radar measurements, ACE satellite solar wind, and SuperMAG geomagnetic field observations to study the electrodynamic response of the equatorial ionosphere to the 23, 24 April 2023 geomagnetic storm. We also compare our data with results from previous experimental and modeling studies of equatorial storm-time electrodynamics. We show, for the first time, unusually large equatorial vertical and zonal plasma drift (zonal and meridional electric field) perturbations driven simultaneously by multi storm-time electric field mechanisms during both the storm main and recovery phases. These include daytime undershielding and overshielding prompt penetration electric fields driven by solar wind electric fields and dynamic pressure changes, substorms, as well as disturbance dynamo electric fields, which are not well reproduced by current empirical models. Our nighttime measurements, over an extended period of large and slowly decreasing southward IMF Bz, show very large, substorm-driven, vertical and zonal drift fluctuations superposed on large undershield driven upward and westward drifts up to about 01 LT, and the occurrence of equatorial spread F irregularities with very strong spatial and temporal structuring. Bacteriophages are the most abundant and diverse biological entities on Earth. Phages exhibit strict host specificity that is largely conferred by adsorption. However, the mechanism underlying this phage host specificity remains poorly understood. In this study, we examined the interaction between outer membrane protein C (OmpC), one of the Escherichia coli receptors, and the long tail fibers of bacteriophage T4. T4 phage uses OmpC of the K-12 strain, but not of the O157 strain, for adsorption, even though OmpCs from the two E. coli strains share 94% homology. We identified amino acids P177 and F182 in loop 4 of the K-12 OmpC as essential for T4 phage adsorption in the copresence of loops 1 and 5. Analyses of phage mutants capable of adsorbing to OmpC mutants demonstrated that amino acids at positions 937 and 942 of the gp37 protein, which is present in the distal tip (DT) region of the T4 long tail fibers, play an important role in adsorption. Furthermore, we created a T4 phage mutant library with artificial modifications in the DT region and isolated and characterized multiple phage mutants capable of adsorbing to OmpC of the O157 strain or lipopolysaccharide of the K-12 strain. These results shed light on the mechanism underlying the phage host specificity mediated by gp37 and OmpC and may be useful in the development of phage therapy via artificial modifications of the DT region of T4 phage. The Escherichia coli RnlA-RnlB toxin-antitoxin system is related to the anti-phage mechanism. Under normal growth conditions, an RnlA toxin with endoribonuclease activity is inhibited by binding of its cognate RnlB antitoxin. After bacteriophage T4 infection, RnlA is activated by the disappearance of RnlB, resulting in the rapid degradation of T4 mRNAs and consequently no T4 propagation when T4 dmd encoding a phage antitoxin against RnlA is defective. Intriguingly, E. coli RNase HI, which plays a key role in DNA replication, is required for the activation of RnlA and stimulates the RNA cleavage activity of RnlA. Here, we report an additional role of RNase HI in the regulation of RnlA-RnlB system. Both RNase HI and RnlB are associated with NRD (one of three domains of RnlA). The interaction between RnlB and NRD depends on RNase HI. Exogenous expression of RnlA in wild-type cells has no effect on cell growth because of endogenous RnlB and this inhibition of RnlA toxicity requires RNase HI and NRD. These results suggest that RNase HI recruits RnlB to RnlA through NRD for inhibiting RnlA toxicity and thus plays two contrary roles in the regulation of RnlA-RnlB system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To clarify hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanocrystal formation based on the interfacial interactions with organic molecules is important for controlling the dispersion states/shapes of HAp and understanding the biomineralization mechanism. In this study, the effects of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles on the HAp nanocrystal formation process were investigated through both the morphosynthesis technique and the molecular orbital calculations. The HAp nanocrystals synthesized in the presence of CTAB exhibited a controlled rod-like shape and subsequently grew up by a thermal treatment to be larger-sized nanocrystals at a well-dispersed state. It was also found that the CTAB micelles strained and disordered at the higher temperature effectively induced heterogeneous nucleation to initiate the nucleation/growth processes. In contrast, HAp nanocrystals synthesized without CTAB exhibited irregular-shaped and aggregated nanocrystals, which are due to dominantly occurring homogeneous nucleation. According to the molecular orbital calculations, the cationic N atom of the CTAB molecule strongly interacted with the Ca ion in the a-plane as well as the hydroxyl/phosphate groups in the c-plane of HAp via ionic/covalent bonding (e.g., only ionic bonding at the closer interfacial distance at 1.0 Å), leading to effective nucleation on the micelle surfaces. Therefore, a possible reason for the rod-like and well-dispersed nanocrystal formation is due to the heterogeneous nuclei formation/growth on the N atoms of CTAB micelles and subsequent fusion growth among the CTAB micelle-directed inorganic-organic complexes in the confined spaces. Escherichia coli messenger RNAs (mRNAs) are rapidly degraded immediately after bacteriophage T4 infection, and the host RNase E contributes to this process. Here, we found that a previously uncharacterized factor of T4 phage, Srd (Similarity with rpoD), was involved in T4-induced host mRNA degradation. The rapid decay of ompA and lpp mRNAs was partially alleviated and a decay intermediate of lpp mRNA rapidly accumulated in cells infected with T4 phage lacking srd. Exogenous expression of Srd in uninfected cells significantly accelerated the decay of these mRNAs. In addition, lpp(T) RNA, with a sequence identical to the decay intermediate of lpp mRNA and a triphosphate at 59-end, was also destabilized by Srd. The destabilization of these RNAs by Srd was not observed in RNase E-defective cells. The initial cleavage of a primary transcript by RNase E can be either direct or dependent on the 59-end of transcript. In the latter case, host RppH is required to convert the triphosphate at 5'-end to a monophosphate. lpp(T) RNA, but not lpp and ompA mRNAs, required RppH for Srd-stimulated degradation, indicating that Srd stimulates both 59-end-dependent and -independent cleavage activities of RNase E. Furthermore, pull-down and immunoprecipitation analyses strongly suggested that Srd physically associates with the N-terminal half of RNase E containing the catalytic moiety and the membrane target sequence. Finally, the growth of T4 phage was significantly decreased by the disruption of srd. These results strongly suggest that the stimulation of RNase E activity by T4 Srd is required for efficient phage growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The solar radiation focusing effect is related to the specific phenomenon of propagation of the Sun-emitted HF and VHF waves through terrestrial ionosphere. This natural effect is observed with ground-based radio instruments running within the 10–200 MHz range as distinctive patterns—the spectral caustics (SCs)—on the solar dynamic spectra. It has been suggested that SCs are associated with medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs). In this paper, we present the first direct observations of SCs induced by MSTIDs, using solar dynamic spectra with SCs obtained by different European radio telescopes on 2014 January 8 and simultaneous two-dimensional detrended total electron content (dTEC) maps over Europe. Spatial examination of dTEC maps as well as precise timing analysis of the maps and the dynamic spectra have been performed. First, we found several pairs of one-to-one (TID-SC) correspondences.
