Abstract Background Several methods can be used to intraoperatively identify pulmonary lesion using radiation technology. However, little is known about patient radiation exposure during chest surgery. We aimed to measure patients’ radiation exposure from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) used in a hybrid operating room. Methods This retrospective study included patients who underwent surgical treatment in a hybrid operating room between April 2019 and December 2023 at the Teikyo University Hospital. All data was obtained prospectively, but the study was approved by the IRB as a retrospective study because of repeated extensions of study period in order to collect more cases. Skin radiation exposure was measured using five wearable dosimeters per patient. The measurements were compared to cumulative Air Kerma. Furthermore, the radiation exposure dose on the surgical side, which cannot be measured, was estimated by computer simulation. Results Among 182 patients who underwent surgery in a hybrid operating room, radiation exposure measurements were conducted on 67 patients. The patients’ mean age was 60.7 years. The average number of CBCT scans was 2.1 (1–5) and the intraoperative identification rate was 100%, with no marking-related complications. Average patient’s skin radiation dose was 3.69 ± 5.48 mGy per dosimeter, and cumulative Air Kerma was 25.4 ± 19.3 mGy. The highest radiation exposure was recorded in the 5th intercostal space whereas the lowest was measured in the supraclavicular or 11th intercostal spaces. Referring to phantom and computer simulation data, the 5th and 8th intercostal spaces were significantly more exposed to radiation at not only measurement side but also the surgical field, particularly when the number of CT scans was four. Conclusion We found that the patient’s 5th to 8th intercostal space was the most radiation exposed area by intraoperative CBCT imaging because the CBCT movement was restricted by the patient’s arm, anesthesia machine, and operating table during chest surgery. In future, it is strongly required to research for radiation protection in this area. Furthermore, performing no more than three scans intraoperatively may be preferable in order to protect patients from radiation exposure during CBCT guided thoracic surgery.

Abstract Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) often develop acute coronary syndrome and undergo percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and vice versa. Acute coronary syndrome and PCI mandate the use of dual antiplatelet therapy, while oral anticoagulation is recommended in patients with AF to mitigate thromboembolic risks. Clinical evidence concerning antithrombotic treatment in patients with AF and PCI has been accumulated, but when combined, the therapeutic strategy becomes complex. Although triple therapy, a combination of oral anticoagulation with dual antiplatelet therapy, has been used for patients with AF undergoing PCI as an initial antithrombotic strategy, less intensive regimens may be associated with a lower rate of bleeding without an increased risk in thrombotic events. This narrative review article summarizes currently available evidence of antithrombotic therapy in patients with AF undergoing PCI.

Postnatal cardiomyocyte cell cycle withdrawal is a critical step wherein the mammalian heart loses regenerative potential after birth. Here, we conducted interspecies multi-omic comparisons between the mouse heart and that of the opossum, which have different postnatal time-windows for cardiomyocyte cell cycle withdrawal. Xanthine metabolism was activated in both postnatal hearts in parallel with cardiomyocyte cell cycle arrest. The pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) which produces NADPH was found to decrease simultaneously. Postnatal myocardial tissues became oxidized accordingly, and administration of antioxidants to neonatal mice altered the PPP and suppressed the postnatal activation of cardiac xanthine metabolism. These results suggest a redox-driven postnatal switch from purine synthesis to degradation in the heart. Importantly, inhibition of xanthine metabolism in the postnatal heart extended postnatal duration of cardiomyocyte proliferation and maintained postnatal heart regeneration potential in mice. These findings highlight a novel role of xanthine metabolism as a redox-dependent metabolic regulator of cardiac regeneration potential.

Abstract The differentiation of B cells into plasma cells is associated with substantial transcriptional and epigenetic remodeling. H3.3 histone variant marks active chromatin via replication-independent nucleosome assembly. However, its role in plasma cell development remains elusive. Herein, we show that during plasma cell differentiation, H3.3 is downregulated, and the deposition of H3.3 and chromatin accessibility are dynamically changed. Blockade of H3.3 downregulation by enforced H3.3 expression impairs plasma cell differentiation in an H3.3-specific sequence-dependent manner. Mechanistically, enforced H3.3 expression inhibits the upregulation of plasma cell-associated genes such as Irf4, Prdm1, and Xbp1 and maintains the expression of B cell-associated genes, Pax5, Bach2, and Bcl6. Concomitantly, sustained H3.3 expression prevents the structure of chromatin accessibility characteristic for plasma cells. Our findings suggest that appropriate H3.3 expression and deposition control plasma cell differentiation.

Abstract A 63‐year‐old woman was admitted to our department for the investigation of superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome. Computed tomography revealed an azygos tumor extending into the SVC. Video‐assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) was performed to remove the distal end of the azygos vein in the left lateral position, followed by complete resection of the entire tumor under median sternotomy in the supine position. The histological diagnosis was a primary angiosarcoma of the azygos vein. The patient was discharged without any complications and is now alive and tumor‐free 24 months after surgery. In addition, contrast‐enhanced computed tomography revealed no graft occlusion in the two reconstructed brachiocephalic veins. Thoracoscopic surgery in the lateral position is useful for safe and reliable complete resection of a tumor arising from the azygos vein.

Abstract The effect of prehospital factors on favorable neurological outcomes remains unclear in patients with witnessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and a shockable rhythm. We developed a decision tree model for these patients by using prehospital factors. Using a nationwide OHCA registry database between 2005 and 2020, we retrospectively analyzed a cohort of 1,930,273 patients, of whom 86,495 with witnessed OHCA and an initial shockable rhythm were included. The primary endpoint was defined as favorable neurological survival (cerebral performance category score of 1 or 2 at 1 month). A decision tree model was developed from randomly selected 77,845 patients (development cohort) and validated in 8650 patients (validation cohort). In the development cohort, the presence of prehospital return of spontaneous circulation was the best predictor of favorable neurological survival, followed by the absence of adrenaline administration and age. The patients were categorized into 9 groups with probabilities of favorable neurological survival ranging from 5.7 to 70.8% (areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.851 and 0.844 in the development and validation cohorts, respectively). Our model is potentially helpful in stratifying the probability of favorable neurological survival in patients with witnessed OHCA and an initial shockable rhythm.

Abstract Hyperuricemia is reportedly associated with the progression of carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), a surrogate of cardiovascular risks and events. However, factors associated with carotid IMT progression in patients with asymptomatic hyperuricemia are largely unknown. In this post-hoc analysis of the multicenter, randomized PRIZE study, we analyzed data from a total of 326 patients who underwent carotid ultrasonography in a blind manner at baseline and 24 months to evaluate carotid IMT. Mean and maximum IMT at the common carotid artery (CCA) were measured at a central core laboratory. Factors related to the absolute change in mean and maximum IMT from baseline to 24 months were explored. Overall, the adjusted mean [0.0032 (− 0.0214 to 0.0278) mm] and maximum [0.0011 (− 0.0327 to 0.0351) mm] CCA-IMT increased numerically from baseline to 24 months. Multivariable analysis identified higher body mass index, history of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), and lower mean CCA-IMT at baseline as significant factors associated with the increase in mean CCA-IMT. In addition, older age and lower mean CCA-IMT at baseline were significant factors for an increased absolute change in the maximum CCA-IMT at 24 months. The present sub-analysis of the PRIZE study showed higher body mass index, history of ASCVD, and older age as significant factors associated with CCA-IMT progression in patients with asymptomatic hyperuricemia. These factors may be considered when identifying the possible risk of atherosclerotic progression in this specific patient population of hyperuricemia. Background: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors are powerful molecular targeted therapeutic agents for lung cancer. We recently developed an original immunocytology and glass slide-based circulating tumor cell (CTC) detection platform for both CTC enumeration and EGFR mutation analysis with DNA extracted from CTCs. Methods: Using this platform, we conducted a pilot clinical study for CTC enumeration in peripheral blood (PB), pulmonary arterial blood (PA), and pulmonary venous blood (PV) from 33 patients with lung cancer (Stage I–III) who underwent surgery, followed by digital PCR-based EGFR mutation analysis of CTCs in PV from 12 patients. Results: The results showed that CTC levels were significantly higher in PV and PA than in PB (p < 0.05, p < 0.01. respectively), with a notably greater number of small and large CTC clusters (p < 0.01). Genetic analysis of EGFR mutations of CTCs from PV (n = 12) revealed six mutations, including three Exon19del and three L856R, in CTCs and eight EGFR mutations, including five Exon19del and three L856R, in lung tumor tissue. CTC mutation status matched that of tissue samples in nine patients, was unmatched in two patients, and controversial in one patient, indicating a sensitivity of 0.75 (6/8) and specificity of 1.0 (4/4) with some false-negative results for the mutation analysis of CTCs. Conclusions: This immunocytology-based CTC detection platform is a convenient method for detecting both CTC number and EGFR mutation status under microscopy, suggesting its potential as a liquid biopsy tool in the hospital for patients with lung cancer in some clinical settings.

Background: Although guidelines recommend intracoronary acetylcholine (ACh) and ergonovine (ER) provocation testing for diagnosis of vasospastic angina, the feasibility and safety of sequential (combined) use of both pharmacological agents during the same catheterization session remain unclear. Objectives: In this study, we investigated the feasibility and safety of sequential intracoronary ACh and ER administration for coronary spasm provocation testing. Methods: The study included 235 patients who showed positive results on ACh and ER provocation testing. Initial intracoronary ACh administration was followed by ER administration for left coronary artery (LCA) spasm provocation testing. Subsequently, the right coronary artery (RCA) was subjected to sequential ACh and ER administration for provocation testing. The primary outcome of the study was the safety of sequential intracoronary ACh and ER provocation testing, which was assessed based on a composite of all-cause death, sustained ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation, and cardiogenic shock. Results: Even in patients with negative results on sequential intracoronary ACh and ER provocation testing in the LCA and only ACh administration into the RCA, additional administration of ER into the RCA showed a positive provocation test result in 33 of 235 (14.0%) patients; three (1.3%) patients developed adverse effects (cardiogenic shock occurred in all cases) during LCA provocation testing. We observed no deaths attributable to spasm provocation testing. Conclusion: Sequential administration of intracoronary ACh and ER was associated with a relatively low major complication rate and may be safe and potentially useful for diagnosis of vasospastic angina.

Metal shock absorbers of nuclear spent fuel casks for storage have been developed. The shock absorbers are equipped at both ends of the cylindrical cask to reduce the impact force and maintain the safety functions of the cask in the event of an unexpected drop accident. As a countermeasure to meet long-term storage requirement (against material degradation), the shock absorber was designed with metal instead of usual wood and its energy absorption performance against 2.5 m height drop (maximum hypothetical handling height in nuclear power plants during storage) was evaluated. With the aim of reducing compression stiffness the metal shock absorber was designed from a perforated aluminum block. Two tests were done for static compression characteristics using cubic specimens and energy absorption capacity against 2.5 m drop using 1/4 scale mockup of metal shock absorber. In addition, a drop test using 1/10 scale mockup cask with metal shock absorbers confirmed that it could deform as assumed and reduce the applied acceleration on the cask to a safety level at crash. As a result of the finite element analysis of the cask with designed shock absorbers dropped from a height of 2.5 m that was verified by the drop test, the fitting portion between body and primary lid in the cask remained within elastic deformation thus confirming the design’s validity.

Although coronary artery perforation can be a fatal complication during percutaneous coronary intervention, it is rarely observed in in-stent restenotic lesions. We present a case with coronary artery perforation after balloon dilatation for a recurrent in-stent restenotic lesion with calcified nodule inside the double-layered stents that were previously implanted. Background In patients with cardiogenic shock (CS), acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is the most common cause, and a percutaneous microaxial ventricular assist device (Impella, Abiomed, Danvers, MA) is a choice for temporary mechanical circulatory support. However, data are limited on complications and outcomes of Impella treatment in patients with CS with and without AMI. Methods and Results Using nationwide prospective registry data in Japan, we included a total of 2047 patients with CS in whom the Impella devices were successfully placed between February 2020 and December 2021. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to the primary indication for the Impella use: AMI versus non‐AMI. The primary end point was a composite of in‐hospital all‐cause death and major complications. Of the 2047 patients, the Impella was indicated for AMI in 1337 (65.3%). In the group without AMI, myocarditis was the leading cause of CS. Patients with AMI‐CS were older and more likely to have cardiovascular risk factors than those with non‐AMI‐CS. The rates of in‐hospital mortality (46.0% versus 43.9%, P=0.38) and major complications (35.2% versus 34.7%, P=0.85) were similar between the 2 groups. Overall, multivariable analysis identified older age, higher body mass index, previous transient ischemic attack or stroke, out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest, and the Impella 5.0 as factors significantly associated with the primary end point. Conclusions The use of Impella in patients with and without AMI was related to similar clinical outcomes with high mortality and complication rates. In Japan, the guidelines of safety technology for automated vehicles clearly state the requirement of level-3 equipment with minimal risk maneuver (MRM) in automated vehicles. In case the drivers fail to respond to a request for intervention, the conditional driving automation system activates an MRM to control the vehicle to a halt in the driving lane or on the side of the road. The current study aims to explore the research question: how does the information of the MRM functionality equipped within the automated vehicle affect the driver behavior during conditionally automated driving? In this study, we hypothesized that drivers who are provided with information about MRM functionality may reduce their attention toward the surrounding environment. The attention allocation to the surrounding environment may be related to the quality of take-over performance. Therefore, we attempted to observe the drivers’ takeover performance in response to RtI. Accordingly, a driving simulator experiment was conducted with 28 drivers as participants to investigate the influence of information regarding MRM on driver behavior. Two groups were formed by randomly placing the participants with and without providing MRM information. The results revealed that the information on MRM triggered a behavioral change in the drivers and reduced their attention toward the surrounding environment or allocated more attention toward the surrounding environment. In future, we would examine the method and content of communicating the MRM information to drivers using automated driving systems.

The role of the incomplete form of Kawasaki disease in future cardiovascular risk is unknown. The present case demonstrates that even a healthy young man with only a history of incomplete Kawasaki disease can develop endothelial dysfunction and suffer myocardial infarction. We did not obtain ethical/institutional review board approval for our submission because this is not a clinical study, but the patient gave written informed consent to publish the case. Objective: We aimed to discuss the underlying oncological issues in staging of mediastinal lymph node metastasis in patients with left lung cancer who underwent extended radical lymphadenectomy (ERL). Methods: This multi-institutional retrospective study analyzed 116 patients with left non-small-cell lung cancer who underwent bilateral paratracheal lymph node dissection (ERL) via median sternotomy. The clinicopathological records of patients with mediastinal lymph node metastasis were examined for prognostic factors, including age, sex, histology, tumor size, cN number, preoperative data, metastatic stations (number and distribution), pT, and adjuvant chemotherapy. Results: Mediastinal lymph node metastases were found in 43 patients, and right paratracheal lymph node metastases (pN3) were found in 13 patients. The 5-year overall survival rate was 25.2% in patients with pN3 tumors (n = 13) and 23.1% in patients with pN2 tumors (n = 30). The prognosis did not differ between patients with pN3 and pN2. Univariate analyses showed that histology, cN, and adjuvant chemotherapy were significant prognostic factors in patients with mediastinal lymph node metastasis. In these 43 patients, cN and adjuvant chemotherapy were significant independent prognostic factors in multivariate analysis. Conclusions: The prognostic factors for left lung cancer with mediastinal lymph node metastasis were cN status and adjuvant chemotherapy, and not pN status (pN2 or pN3). We hope that the study results, which suggest that there may be no difference in prognosis between pN2 and pN3, would broaden the discussion of oncological issues in the staging of mediastinal lymph node metastasis of left lung cancer.

Background Chronic systemic inflammatory diseases (CSIDs) such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are reportedly associated with an increased risk of ischemic cardiovascular events including acute myocardial infarction (MI). However, data are limited on clinical characteristics and ischemic and bleeding outcomes after acute MI in patients with CSIDs. Methods This bi-center registry included a total of 1001 patients with acute MI undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. CSIDs included inflammatory rheumatological conditions (RA, systemic lupus erythematosus, vasculitis, etc.) and organ-specific diseases (chronic hepatitis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, etc.). The primary endpoint was net adverse clinical events (NACE), a composite of ischemic (all-cause death, MI, and ischemic stroke) and major bleeding (Bleeding Academic Research Consortium type 3 or 5) events, during hospitalization and after discharge. Results Of the 1001 patients, 58 (5.8%) had CSIDs. The proportion of women was higher in patients with CSIDs than those without (37.9% vs. 22.1%, p = 0.009). During the hospitalization, no significant differences in the primary endpoint of NACE were observed between patients with and without CSIDs (10.3% vs. 12.7%, p = 0.84). During the median follow-up of 42.6 months after discharge, patients with CSIDs had a higher risk of NACE (22.5% vs. 10.1%, p = 0.01) than those without, mainly driven by an increased risk of ischemic events (18.4% vs. 8.4%, p = 0.03). Conclusions A small but significant proportion of patients with acute MI (5.8%) had CSIDs. While the incidence of in-hospital events was similar, patients with CSIDs had worse outcomes after discharge, suggesting that further clinical investigations and therapeutic approaches are needed in this patient subset.

Background and Objectives: An interventional diagnostic procedure (IDP), including intracoronary acetylcholine (ACh) provocation and coronary physiological testing, is recommended as an invasive diagnostic standard for patients suspected of ischemia with no obstructive coronary arteries (INOCA). Recent guidelines suggest Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction frame count (TFC) as an alternative to wire-based coronary physiological indices for diagnosing coronary microvascular dysfunction. We evaluated trajectories of TFC during IDP and the impact of ACh provocation on TFC. Materials and Methods: This was a single-center, retrospective study. Patients who underwent IDP to diagnose INOCA were included and divided into two groups according to the positive or negative ACh provocation test. Wire-based invasive physiological assessment was preceded by ACh provocation tests and intracoronary isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN). We evaluated TFC at three different time points during IDP; pre-ACh, post-ISDN, and post-hyperemia. Results: Of 104 patients, 58 (55.8%) had positive ACh provocation test. In the positive ACh group, resting mean transit time (Tmn) and baseline resistance index were significantly higher than in the negative ACh group. Post-ISDN TFC was significantly correlated with resting Tmn (r = 0.31, p = 0.002). Absolute TFC values were highest at pre-ACh, followed by post-ISDN and post-hyperemia in both groups. All between-time point differences in TFC were statistically significant in both groups, except for the change from pre-ACh to post-ISDN in the positive ACh group. Conclusions: In patients suspected of INOCA, TFC was modestly correlated with Tmn, a surrogate of coronary blood flow. The positive ACh provocation test influenced coronary blood flow assessment during IDP.

Aim: The impact of in-hospital and ambulatory glucose variability (GV) on lipid core plaques (LCP) is unclear. We evaluated the relation of GV during hospitalization and after discharge to LCPs. Methods: A total of 35 patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) under near-infrared spectroscopy intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) guidance for acute myocardial infarction (MI) and stable coronary artery disease were prospectively included. LCP was evaluated with a lipid core burden index (LCBI) and a maximum LCBI in 4 mm (max LCBI4mm) in the non-target vessel using NIRS-IVUS. GV was measured by a flush glucose monitoring system. Results: In-hospital mean amplitude of glucose excursion (MAGE) was significantly higher than that after discharge (73.4±26.8 vs. 66.0±22.8 mg/dl, p=0.03). In the entire study population, LCBI and maxLCBI4mm in the non-target vessel were correlated with MAGE after discharge (r=0.51, p=0.002 and r=0.39, p=0.02), but not significantly correlated with in-hospital MAGE. The relations of MAGE to higher LCBI and maxLCBI4mm were more evident in patients with acute MI. Conclusions: GV was greater during hospitalization than after discharge in patients undergoing PCI. Greater GV after discharge was significantly associated with higher LCBI and maxLCBI4mm, suggesting that ambulatory GV may be closely link to coronary atherosclerosis.

The pedestrian and cyclist-related accident fatality rate is higher than that of other traffic accidents. One of the pedestrian behaviours that leads to traffic accidents is the act of moving rapidly onto the road from a blind spot without warning. Expert drivers practice hazard-anticipatory driving and will naturally seek to reduce uncertainty by attempting to fit their current driving context into a pre-existing category. Risk management is the process of identifying hazards and assessing and controlling risks to attain safety. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence that driving context-altering road environmental elements exert on the road-crossing behaviour of pedestrians and cyclists. Thus, this study attempted to identify covert hazards (obscured pedestrians and cyclists). A logistic regression analysis was employed along with data from the near-miss incident database, in which approximately 140,000 near-crash-relevant events were registered in 2017. By using the logistic regression analysis along with the annotations recorded in the database, we constructed a predictive model to identify covert hazards. The study demonstrated the feasibility of using a set of environmental elements that shape the driving context to construct a predictive model that identifies covert hazards.

Objectives Although uric acid lowering therapies, including xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibition, may reduce the absolute level of blood pressure (BP), the effect of XO inhibition on BP variability is largely unknown. The aim of the present analysis was to evaluate the impact of febuxostat, an XO inhibitor, on BP variability in a randomised trial setting.Methods This was a subanalysis of the PRIZE Study, a randomised trial to evaluate the potential effect of febuxostat on carotid intima–media thickness progression. Patients with hyperuricemia and carotid plaques were randomly assigned to the febuxostat or control group. During a 24-month period, office BP and pulse rate (PR) were measured ≥3 times. BP and PR variabilities were assessed with SD and coefficient of variation (CV). The effect of febuxostat on BP and PR variabilities was adjusted with age, sex and baseline BP or PR, expressed with 95% CIs.Results A total of 472 patients were included into the present subanalysis. During the 24-month follow-up period, the febuxostat group had a significantly lower adjusted mean systolic BP (128.4 (126.8–130.0) vs 130.7 (129.1–132.2) mm Hg, p=0.04) and CV of systolic BP (7.4 (6.7–8.0) vs 8.2 (7.6–8.8), p=0.04) than the control group. Adjusted SD of PR was also lower in the febuxostat group than their counterpart (5.95 (4.93–6.97) vs 7.33 (6.32–8.33), p=0.04).Conclusion XO inhibition with febuxostat was associated with reduced visit-to-visit BP variability as well as reduced PR variability in patients with hyperuricemia and carotid plaques.Trial registration numbers University Hospital Medical Information Network Clinical Trial Registry (UMIN000012911 and UMIN000041322).

BackgroundCheckpoint inhibitor–related pneumonitis (CIP) is a lethal immune-related adverse event. However, the development process of CIP, which may provide insight into more effective management, has not been extensively examined.MethodsWe conducted a multicenter retrospective analysis of 56 patients who developed CIP. Clinical characteristics, radiological features, histologic features, and laboratory tests were analyzed. After a comprehensive analysis, we proposed acute, subacute, and chronic phases of CIP and summarized each phase’s characteristics.ResultsThere were 51 patients in the acute phase, 22 in the subacute phase, and 11 in the chronic phase. The median interval time from the beginning of CIP to the different phases was calculated (acute phase: ≤4.9 weeks; subacute phase: 4.9~13.1 weeks; and chronic phase: ≥13.1 weeks). Abstract The Cre/loxP system is a powerful tool for generating conditional gene knockout (KO) mice and elucidate gene function in vivo. CD19-Cre and Mb1-iCre transgenic mice are commonly used for generating B cell-specific KO mice and investigate the development, as well as the physiological and pathophysiological roles of B cells. However, the CD19-Cre line low efficiency and the Mb1-iCre line occasional ectopic recombination represent challenges for their use. Thus, we developed a CD19-codon-improved Cre (CD19-iCre) knock-in mouse with the T2A-iCre sequence inserted into the Cd19 locus, just before the stop codon. The CD19-iCre mice were compared with existing models, crossed with the Rosa26-EYFP reporter mice, and their recombination activity in B cells carrying different Cre alleles was assessed. CD19-iCre mice showed more effective Cre recombination in the early B cell developmental stages compared with the CD19-Cre mice. The efficiencies of the CD19-iCre and Mb1-iCre lines were similar; however, the B lineage-specific recombination was more stringent in the CD19-iCre line. Furthermore, the utility value of the CD19-iCre model was superior than that of the CD19-Cre mice regarding deletion efficiency in IL10-floxed mice. Thus, the CD19-iCre line is a valuable tool for highly efficient gene targeting specific to the B cell compartment.

Abstract Background Pulmonary NUT carcinoma is rare, but lethal, thus, must not be overlooked. The definitive diagnosis is made by a NUT monoclonal antibody or gene analysis, but these are not always routinely available. Therefore, the diagnosis depends on this rare disease being suspected from the clinical and pathological findings. Generally, NUT carcinoma of the lung occurs near the hilum in younger adults with severe subjective symptoms. Histologically, it is characterized by the monomorphic growth of small cells which showed positivity of p63 immunohistochemistry. Case presentation An 82-year-old man was referred for an incidental finding of an abnormal shadow at the peripheral apex of the right lung on computed tomography for a regular follow-up examination of renal cancer. Microscopically, small cell carcinoma was initially suspected; however, immunohistochemistry was not typical. NUT carcinoma with BRD4-NUT fusion was ultimately diagnosed using a NUT monoclonal antibody, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and RNA-seq. p63 and p40 protein expression was not detected. Conclusions This is the first case of pulmonary NUT carcinoma to show negativity for p63 and is the oldest among previously reported cases. The present case suggests that NUT carcinoma should be suspected when the morphology of monomorphic growth of small cells without lineage-specific differentiation, regardless of age, clinical symptoms, the tumor location, or p63 expression.

Introduction: Several measures of blood pressure (BP) variability have been associated with kidney disease and cardiovascular events. Although BP is routinely measured during hospitalization in daily practice, the prognostic impact of in-hospital BP and its variability are uncertain. Methods: A total of 226 participants who underwent elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for stable coronary artery disease (CAD) were included. BP was measured by trained nurses during the 4-day hospitalization for PCI. BP variability was assessed by standard deviation (SD) and coefficient variation of systolic BP. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated at baseline and follow-up (≥6 months). The cardiovascular end point was defined as a composite of cardiovascular death, acute coronary syndrome, stroke, heart failure hospitalization, and any coronary revascularization. Results: In-hospital BP was measured 9.5 ± 0.8 times. During a median follow-up period of 1.7 years, mean eGFR change was −1.7 mL/min/1.73 m2 per year, and 35 (15.5%) participants met the cardiovascular end point. Mean systolic BP and SD were negatively correlated with eGFR change. In the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, SD of systolic BP predicted the cardiovascular end point (AUC 0.63, best cutoff value 14.2 mm Hg, p = 0.003). Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated a significantly higher incidence of the cardiovascular end point in patients with SD of systolic BP ≥14.2 mm Hg compared to their counterpart (p = 0.003). A multivariable analysis showed SD of systolic BP as an independent predictor for the cardiovascular end point. When assessed with coefficient variation, BP variability was similarly related to eGFR change and clinical outcomes. Conclusion: Greater in-hospital BP variability was associated with renal function decline and cardiovascular events in patients with stable CAD.

There are several animal models of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP), but each requires a long time to evaluate drug effects. Zebrafish scales are classified as dermal bone and potentially represent a convenient animal model of GIOP because they rapidly regenerate following their removal. We clarified that dexamethasone-treated regenerating scales showed malformations, decreased size and circularity. Anti-osteoporosis drugs rescued the scale malformation phenotype eight-days following the removal of scales. Hence, the dexamethasone-induced regenerating scale malformation model may be a useful animal model for discovering drugs to treat GIOP.

This study aims to confirm the usefulness of adaptation of proactive braking intervention systems to the risk level of the driving environment for improving the reactive factors of acceptability. First, we develop prototypes of adaptive proactive braking intervention systems around non-signalized intersections on community roads. Then, to confirm the effectiveness of adaptation, we conduct user tests, in which 45 elderly drivers participate, on public roads. From comparisons between constant setting and adaptive setting, we confirm that the adaptive setting improves the reactive factors of acceptability, such as reduction in the feeling of impatience and strangeness.

Background Lower primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) volume is known to be associated with worse outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI) at hospital level. The present study aimed to evaluate the relations of primary, elective, and total PCI volume and primary/total PCI volume ratio per hospital to in‐hospital mortality in patients with acute MI undergoing primary PCI. Methods and Results Using a large nationwide administrative database, we included a total of 83 076 patients from 154 hospitals in Japan undergoing PCI for either acute MI or elective cases. Relations of annual procedural volumes for primary, elective, and total PCI to in‐hospital mortality after acute MI at hospital level were evaluated. The ratio of primary to total PCI volume per hospital was also assessed. The primary end point was the ratio of observed to predicted mortality. Of 83 076 patients, 26 913 (32.4%) underwent primary PCI for acute MI, among whom 1561 (5.8%) died during hospitalization. Overall, observed in‐hospital mortality after acute MI and observed/predicted mortality ratio were higher in hospitals with lower primary, elective, and total PCI volumes. Observed/predicted in‐hospital mortality ratio was higher in hospitals with low primary/total PCI volume ratio, even in those with high total PCI volume. Conclusions Primary, elective, and total PCI volume at hospitals were inversely associated with in‐hospital mortality in patients with acute MI undergoing primary PCI. Lower ratio of primary to total PCI volume were related to higher in‐hospital mortality, suggesting primary/total PCI volume ratio as an institutional indicator of quality of care for acute MI.

Patients with vasospastic angina (VSA) who are resuscitated from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) are at a high risk of recurrent lethal arrhythmia and cardiovascular events. However, the benefit of the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy in this population has not been fully elucidated. The present study aimed to analyze the prognostic impact of ICD therapy on patients with VSA and SCA. A total of 280 patients who were resuscitated from SCA and received an ICD for secondary prophylaxis were included in the present multicenter registry. The patients were divided into two groups on the basis of the presence of VSA. The primary endpoint was a composite of all-cause death and appropriate ICD therapy (appropriate anti-tachycardia pacing and shock) for recurrent ventricular arrhythmias. Of 280 patients, 51 (18%) had VSA. Among those without VSA, ischemic cardiomyopathy was the main cause of SCA (38%), followed by non-ischemic cardiomyopathies (18%) and Brugada syndrome (7%). Twenty-three (8%) patients were dead and 72 (26%) received appropriate ICD therapy during a median follow-up period of 3.8 years. There was no significant difference in the incidence of the primary endpoint between patients with and without VSA (24% vs. 33%, p = 0.19). In a cohort of patients who received an ICD for secondary prophylaxis, long-term clinical outcomes were not different between those with VSA and those with other cardiac diseases after SCA, suggesting ICD therapy may be considered in patients with VSA and those with other etiologies who were resuscitated from SCA.

Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) is described as an important subset of ischemia with no obstructive coronary artery disease. Resistive reserve ratio (RRR) and microvascular resistance reserve (MRR) have been proposed as novel physiological indices evaluating coronary microvascular dilation function. The aim of this study was to explore factors associated with impaired RRR and MRR. Coronary physiological indices were invasively evaluated in the left anterior descending coronary artery using the thermodilution method in patients suspected of CMD. CMD was defined as a coronary flow reserve p < 0.001) and MRR (3.4 ± 1.9 vs. 6.9 ± 3.5, p < 0.001) were lower in the CMD group. In the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, RRR (area under the curve 0.84, p < 0.001) and MRR (area under the curve 0.85, p < 0.001) were both predictive of the presence of CMD. In the multivariable analysis, previous myocardial infarction, lower hemoglobin, higher brain natriuretic peptide levels, and intracoronary nicorandil were identified as factors associated with lower RRR and MRR. In conclusion, the presence of previous myocardial infarction, anemia, and heart failure was associated with impaired coronary microvascular dilation function. RRR and MRR may be useful to identify patients with CMD.

The GRACE risk score is established to predict thrombotic events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Although thrombotic events including myocardial infarction after ACS are mainly attributable to vulnerable plaque formation, whether the GRACE score correlates with coronary lipid-rich plaque is unclear. A total of 54 patients with ACS undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention under near-infrared spectroscopy intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) guidance were included in a prospective manner. Patients were divided into two groups according to the median of the GRACE risk score. Coronary lipid plaques in the target vessel were assessed by NIRS-IVUS with lipid core burden index (LCBI) and a maximum LCBI in 4 mm (maxLCBI4mm). The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis was performed based on the major adverse cardiovascular events as an exploratory analysis. The GRACE risk score was significantly and positively correlated with LCBI (r = 0.31, p = 0.03) and maxLCBI4mm (r = 0.38, p = 0.006). LCBI (111.7 ± 85.7 vs. 169.0 ± 83.5, p = 0.02) and maxLCBI4mm (428.5 ± 227.1 vs. 600.6 ± 227.7, p = 0.009) in the target vessel were significantly higher in the high GRACE risk score group than their counterpart. In the ROC curve analysis, LCBI and maxLCBI4mm were predictive for clinical events. In conclusion, the higher GRACE risk score may serve as a discriminator of risk comprising more lipid-rich plaques as an underlying mechanism of an increased risk of thrombotic events after ACS. In patients with ACS, the higher GRACE risk score was significantly and modestly associated with greater coronary lipid plaques in the target vessel.

Among patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI) complicated by cardiogenic shock (CS), in-hospital mortality remains high. In the present study, we aimed to identify factors associated with clinical outcomes of acute MI patients with CS in a contemporary setting. A total of 1102 patients with acute MI undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention were included, among whom 196 (17.8%) were complicated by CS. The primary outcome was all-cause death during hospitalization, and factors associated with in-hospital mortality were explored in patients with acute MI and CS. Of the 196 patients with acute MI complicated by CS, 77 (39.3%) died during hospitalization. The rates of non-ST-segment elevation MI (NSTEMI) (33.8% vs. 19.3%, p = 0.02) and culprit lesion in the left main or left anterior descending coronary artery (68.8% vs. 47.9%, p = 0.004) were higher, while left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was lower (24.4 ± 11.7% vs. 39.7 ± 13.8%, p < 0.001) in non-survivors than in survivors. Multivariable analysis identified NSTEMI presentation and lower LVEF as independent predictors of in-hospital death. In conclusion, NSTEMI and low LVEF were identified as factors associated with higher in-hospital mortality. The identification of even higher-risk subsets and targeted therapeutic strategies may be warranted to improve survival of patients with acute MI and CS.

Background and Objectives: Although previous studies showed that an activity of xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR), a rate-limiting enzyme in purine metabolism, beyond the serum uric acid level, was associated with the development of coronary artery disease (CAD), the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Because endothelial dysfunction and a greater blood pressure (BP) variability may play a role, we investigated the relations among the endothelial function, XOR, and BP variability. Materials and Methods: This was a post-hoc study using pooled data of patients with a stable CAD from two prospective investigations, in which the systemic endothelial function was assessed with the reactive hyperemia index (RHI) and the XOR activity was measured. The BP variability was evaluated using BP measurements during the three- and four-day hospitalization. Results: A total of 106 patients with a stable CAD undergoing a percutaneous coronary intervention were included. Of the 106 patients, 46 (43.4%) had a systemic endothelial dysfunction (RHI < 1.67). The multivariable analysis identified a higher body mass index (BMI), female gender, and diabetes as factors associated with an endothelial dysfunction. A higher BMI was also related to an elevated XOR activity, in addition to current smoking. No significant correlation was observed between the RHI and XOR activity. Similarly, the in-hospital BP variability was associated with neither the endothelial function nor XOR. Conclusions: Among patients with a stable CAD, several factors were identified as being associated with a systemic endothelial dysfunction or an elevated XOR activity. However, no direct relations between the endothelial function, XOR, and BP variability were found.

The oxidation reaction greatly alters characteristics of various cellular components. In exchange for efficient energy production, mitochondrial aerobic respiration substantially increases the risk of excess oxidation of cellular biomolecules such as lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, and numerous small molecules. To maintain a physiologically balanced cellular reduction-oxidation (redox) state, cells utilize a variety of molecular machineries including cellular antioxidants and protein degradation complexes such as the ubiquitin-proteasome system or autophagy. In the past decade, biomolecular liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) has emerged as a subject of great interest in the biomedical field, as it plays versatile roles in the maintenance of cellular homeostasis. With regard to redox homeostasis, LLPS arose as a major player in both well-characterized and newly emerging redox pathways. LLPS is involved in direct redox imbalance sensing, signal transduction, and transcriptional regulation. Also, LLPS is at play when cells resist redox imbalance through metabolic switching, translational remodeling, activating the DNA damage response, and segregation of vulnerable lipids and proteins. On the other hand, chronic accumulation of phase-separated molecular condensates such as lipid droplets and amyloid causes neurotoxic outcomes. In this review we enumerate recent progress on understanding how cells utilize LLPS to deal with oxidative stress, especially related to cell survival or pathogenesis, and we discuss future research directions for understanding biological phase separation in cellular redox regulation.

Ischemic stroke is one of the most common neurological diseases. However, the impact of ischemic stroke on human cerebral tissue remains largely unknown due to a lack of ischemic human brain samples. In this study, we applied cerebral organoids derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells to evaluate the effect of oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R). Pathway analysis showed the relationships between vitamin digestion and absorption, fat digestion and absorption, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) signaling pathway, and complement and coagulation cascades. Combinational verification with transcriptome and gene expression analysis of different cell types revealed fatty acids-related PPAR signaling pathway and pyruvate kinase isoform M2 (PKM2) as key markers of neuronal cells in response to OGD/R. These findings suggest that, although there remain some limitations to be improved, our ischemic stroke model using human cerebral organoids would be a potentially useful tool when combined with other conventional two-dimensional (2D) mono-culture systems.

Esaxerenone, a mineralocorticoid receptor blocker (MRB), is a new antihypertensive agent. However, esaxerenone-related data with respect to hypertension with heart failure are limited. We investigated the safety and efficacy of esaxerenone in hypertensive patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Hypertensive patients with HFrEF treated with esaxerenone were retrospectively analyzed at two timepoints (short-term: 35±15 days; mid-term: 167±45 days). Liquid biopsy has been adapted as a diagnostic test for EGFR mutations in patients with advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) has been widely used for the rapid detection of pathogens through DNA amplification. This study investigated the efficacy of an EGFR-LAMP assay using plasma samples of patients with resected NSCLC tumors. The EGFR status was investigated using both LAMP and next-generation sequencing (NGS) assays in cases that met the following criteria: (1) pulmonary adenocarcinoma with EGFR mutation detected by the Therascreen EGFR PCR Kit and (2) preoperative plasma samples contained enough DNA for the LAMP and NGS experiments. Among 51 specimens from patients with EGFR-mutated tumors or metastatic lymph nodes, the LAMP assay detected 1 EGFR mutation that was also detected in the NGS assay. However, a plasma sample that demonstrated EGFR wild type in the LAMP assay showed an EGFR mutant status in NGS. The detection rates (1.9% in LAMP and 3.9% in NGS) were very low in both assays, demonstrating a similar performance in detecting EGFR mutations in NSCLC tumors; therefore, it could be a more suitable test for the advanced stage, not the early stage. Notably, the LAMP assay was more time-saving, cost-effective, and straightforward. However, further investigation is required to develop a more sensitive assay.

In diabetes patients, hyperglycemia causes many vascular disorders. To clarify the effects of water extract of Brazilian green propolis (WEP) against high glucose-induced vascular disorders, we investigated using zebrafish-based vasculopathy model. Zebrafish larvae, which is transparent and small, is an ideal model organism to detect changes of the vascular structure. Zebrafish larvae were exposed to 200 mM glucose and WEP solution from 2 h post fertilization (hpf) to 3 days post fertilization (dpf). The WEP treatment normalized high glucose-induced morphological abnormality of the larvae, hyaloid vessels, and cerebral vessels. The WEP treatment partly suppressed the elevation of glucose levels and mRNA levels of p27 in tissues by exposure to high glucose content. Furthermore, we found that chlorogenic acid, which is one of the main constituents of WEP, also normalized high glucose-induced morphological abnormality. Our findings indicated that WEP improves vascular integrity in the central nervous system under high glucose conditions.

Non-exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is mainly caused by the accumulation of lipofuscin and drusen on the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Both oxidative stress and autophagic dysfunction accelerate the deposition of lipofuscin at the RPE. One of the key regulators in the response against oxidative stress is the NF-E2-Related Factor 2 (Nrf2)-kelch like ECH associated protein 1 (Keap1) axis, which is also closely associated with the autophagy pathway. Nrf2 activation upregulates the expression levels of certain anti-oxidative enzymes [e.g. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1)], which attenuates oxidative damage. However, until now, the relationship between cytoprotective effects of Nrf2 activation and autophagic degradation remain unclear. To address these questions, we investigated the effects of a novel Nrf2 activator, RS9, on RPE damage. We found that RS9 protected ARPE-19 cells against NaIO3-induced oxidative damage, and that the protective effects of RS9 were inhibited by co-treatment with zinc protoporphyrin, an HO-1 inhibitor. Next, we examined the involvement of autophagic degradation in the protective effects of RS9. Co-treatment with RS9 and chloroquine, a lysosomal acidification inhibitor, inhibited the protective effect. Furthermore, western blotting and immunostaining showed that RS9 accelerated autophagy flux and induced transient upregulation of p62 [also known as sequestosome 1 (SQSTM1)]. Co-treatment with chloroquine and RS9 also inhibited the degradation of autophagosomes. Transient upregulation of SQSTM1 by RS9 was unaltered by HO-1 knockdown using siRNA. RS9 and chloroquine had the same actions in light damaged adult zebrafish retina as those in vitro. In conclusion, we clarified the relationship between acceleration of the autophagy pathway and the cytoprotective effects of Nrf2 activation in RPE cells and zebrafish retina. These findings indicated that Nrf2 activation could be a promising therapeutic approach for non-exudative AMD by supporting RPE maintenance. BackgroundAlthough current guidelines recommend admission to the intensive/coronary care unit (ICU/CCU) for patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (MI), routine use of the CCU in uncomplicated patients with acute MI remains controversial. We aimed to evaluate the safety of management in the general ward (GW) of hemodynamically stable patients with acute MI after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).MethodsUsing a large nationwide administrative database, a cohort of 19426 patients diagnosed with acute MI in 52 hospitals where a CCU was available were retrospectively analyzed. Patients with mechanical cardiac support and Killip classification 4, and those without primary PCI on admission were excluded. A total of 5736 patients were included and divided into the CCU (n = 3488) and GW (n = 2248) groups according to the type of hospitalization room after primary PCI. Propensity score matching was performed, and 1644 pairs were matched. The primary endpoint was in-hospital mortality at 30 days.ResultsThe CCU group had a higher rate of Killip classification 3 and ambulance use than the GW group. There was no significant difference in the incidence of in-hospital mortality within 30 days among the matched subjects. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard model analysis among unmatched patients supported the findings (hazard ratio 1.12, 95% confidence interval 0.66-1.91, p = 0.67).ConclusionsThe use of the GW was not associated with higher in-hospital mortality in hemodynamically stable patients with acute MI after primary PCI. It may be feasible for the selected patients to be directly admitted to the GW after primary PCI.

Background: Despite an increasing awareness of the risk of medical errors, few data sources are available to highlight the characteristics and patterns of medical errors in the clinical management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The present study aimed to evaluate medical malpractice claims associated with the management of RA and other autoimmune connective tissue diseases (ACTDs). Methods: We analyzed 38 ACTD-associated closed claims extracted from a total of 8530 claims processed between July 2004 and June 2014 by the Tokyo headquarters office of Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Incorporated, a leading malpractice insurer in Japan. Results: RA was the most common ACTD assessed in this study, accounting for 20 cases. Although the male-to-female ratio among these cases was 5:15, in accordance with the general demographic distribution of RA, the proportion of patients older than 60 years (77.8%) was relatively high as the general range of RA susceptibility is 30–50 years. The analysis of allegation types among RA cases revealed statistically significant differences from non-RA cases (Fisher's exact test) as well as the following key findings: diagnosis-related allegations were absent (P < 0.01), whereas medication-related allegations were distinctively common (P = 0.02). Clinical processes related to the assessment process were most vulnerable to breakdown and leading to negligence identified with subsequent medication-related allegations, particularly among RA cases. Conclusions: The characteristics of malpractice claims associated with RA management, including the high frequency of medication-related allegations, breakdowns in the assessment process, and high claim numbers among patients older than 60 years, suggest the importance of caution exercised by physicians when administering immunosuppressants for the clinical treatment of RA.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of irreversible loss of central vision in the elderly. Zebrafish is an attractive animal model in some respects, lower cost, smaller housing facilities and easier genetic manipulation compared to rodents. The present study aimed to establish a drug evaluation method against light irradiation, as a dry AMD disease model, using adult pigmented zebrafish. Intravitreal administration of an antioxidant, N-acetylcysteine, protected against light-induced retinal degeneration in a concentration-dependent manner. We established a new drug evaluation model against light-induced retinal degeneration that can provide new knowledge about dry AMD pathology and therapy.

Cluster ion beams have unique features in energy deposition, but their biological effects are yet to be examined. In this study, we employed bacterial spores as a model organism, established an irradiation method, and examined the lethal effect of 2 MeV C, 4 MeV C2, and 6 MeV C3 ion beams. The lethal effect per particle (per number of molecular ions) was not significantly different between cluster and monomer ion beams. The relative biological effectiveness and inactivation cross section as a function of linear energy transfer (LET) suggested that the single atoms of 2 MeV C deposited enough energy to kill the spores, and, therefore, there was no significant difference between the cluster and monomer ion beams in the cell killing effect under this experimental condition. We also considered the behavior of the atoms of cluster ions in the spores after the dissociation of cluster ions into monomer ions by losing bonding electrons through inelastic collisions with atoms on the surface. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to provide a basis for examining the biological effect of cluster ions.

Accurate analysis of the correlation between deformation of the prostate and displacement of its center of gravity (CoG) is important for efficient radiation therapy for prostate cancer. In this study, we addressed this problem by introducing a new analysis approach.A planning computed tomography (CT) scan and 7 repeat cone-beam CT scans during the course of treatment were obtained for 19 prostate cancer patients who underwent three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy. A single observer contoured the prostate gland only. To evaluate the local deformation of the prostate, it was divided into 12 manually defined segments. Prostate deformation was calculated using in-house developed software. The correlation between the displacement of the CoG and the local deformation of the prostate was evaluated using multiple regression analysis.The mean value and standard deviation (SD) of the prostate deformation were 0.6 mm and 1.7 mm, respectively. For the majority of the patients, the local SD of the deformation was slightly lager in the superior and inferior segments. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the anterior-posterior displacement of the CoG of the prostate had a highly significant correlation with the deformations in the middle-anterior (p < 0.01) and middle-posterior (p < 0.01) segments of the prostate surface (R2 = 0.84). However, there was no significant correlation between the displacement of the CoG and the deformation of the prostate surface in other segments.Anterior-posterior displacement of the CoG of the prostate is highly correlated with deformation in its middle-anterior and posterior segments. In the radiation therapy for prostate cancer, it is necessary to optimize the internal margin for every position of the prostate measured using image-guided radiation therapy.

Small non-protein coding RNA, microRNA (miR), which regulate messenger RNA levels, have recently been identified, and may play important roles in the pathogenesis of various diseases. The present study focused on miR-31 and investigated its potential involvement in lung carcinogenesis. The expression of miR-31 was altered in lung cancer cells through either the amplification or loss of the host gene locus. The strong expression of miR-31 in large cell carcinomas was attributed to the gene amplification. Meanwhile, the loss of miR-31 expression was more frequently observed in aggressive adenocarcinomas. Thus, miR-31 may play a pleiotropic role in the development of lung cancers among different histological types. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to show the potential causative mechanism of the altered expression of miR-31 and suggest its potentially diverse significance in the different histological types of lung cancers.
